Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who is ranking second in 2016 Republican presidential polls, is warming up to a presidential run by Kanye West in 2020.

Carson appeared on ABC News on Sunday and said he and the rapper were able to chat.

"I did have an opportunity to talk with him," Carson said. "I was extremely impressed with his business acumen. He knows a lot about business. I talked to him about the possibility of maybe himself and some of the other people in pop culture doing some music that might be uplifting, that might give young women a sense of their value and young men a sense of responsibility. I think it could be a tremendous thing in our society."

West previously made it clear in a Vanity Fair interview that he was a big fan of the neurosurgeon turned presidential candidate.

"As soon as I heard Ben Carson speak, I tried for three weeks to get on the phone with him," West told the magazine. "I was like this is the most brilliant guy."

West said during the Video Music Awards last month that he would run for president in 2020. He suggested to Vanity Fair that he was seriously considering it.

How does Carson feel about West for president?

"I am certainly willing to give him a chance — we'll see," Carson said. "He'll be able to explain things and see if he resonates with the people."

Carson most recently found himself under attack for saying he wouldn't support a Muslim president.

New 'Daily Show' host Trevor Noah admits he's feeling a lot of pressure before his big debut

With just a few days left before Monday's re-launch of "The Daily Show," new host Trevor Noah admitted that he's feeling the pressure.

"Yeah, of course there’s pressure," he told reporters during a press conference on Friday in New York City.

Noah, 31, takes over the show after Jon Stewart stepped down in August after 16 years of pop culture-shifting fake TV news. Clearly, as one reporter pointed out to Noah, there's pressure but also danger in taking over after someone as beloved as Stewart.

"Obviously in this case, the pressure is amplified because of the legacy that 'The Daily Show' has, because what Jon has achieved, the place the he holds in people’s hearts," Noah said. "I think if we didn’t have the pressure and we weren’t afraid then I’d think there’s something wrong with us. This is a giant undertaking and we’re approaching it as such. But we’re also excited about it because it is a giant undertaking."

the daily show set.JPGJust a little over a week ago – as if Noah needed another reminder – Stewart and his team took home an Emmy for the show. The good part is that team is sticking around.

"I have an amazing team here who is the force behind 'The Daily Show,'" the South African comedian said. "These are all Emmy winners sitting next to me, so I know they know what they’re doing. I’m the wild card, so they’re the ones who should be afraid."

"The Daily Show With Trevor Noah" will premiere Monday, September 28, at 11:00 p.m. ET on Comedy Central and will be simulcast on all the Viacom networks.

Mad Max Inspired Wasteland WeekendThe "Mad Max" franchise has had a hardcore fan base since the original film was released in 1979.

The second and third sequels came out in 1981 and 1985, respectively. It took another 30 years for the fourth, "Mad Max: Fury Road," to hit theaters. It premiered in May 2015.

The release gave a jolt of energy to the franchise and sparked a new generation of "Mad Max" superfans.

Hundreds of them recently joined together for an annual four-day event they called Wasteland Weekend.

Held in the Mojave Desert of California, the weekend gave fans a chance to celebrate the film and even build their own post-apocalyptic world.

Australia is currently deciding whether or not to let Chris Brown in the country because of what happened with Rihanna

Chris Brown

Singer Chris Brown has been denied a visa to enter Australia because of character, The Guardian reports. Although Brown and his reps don't quite see it that way.

Brown was issued the declaration on Friday and has just under a month to file an appeal.

"I can confirm that a notice of intention to consider refusal has been issued," Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said. "People to whom these notices are issued have 28 days to present material as to why they should be given a visa to enter Australia.”

He added, “Decisions on whether a visa will or will not be issued are made after that timeframe and consideration of the material presented to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.”

Brown's representatives, however, remain hopeful that the R&B act will be allowed entrance, and they're denying that Brown had been denied.

“Contrary to media reports, Chris Brown’s request to enter Australia on tour has not been denied. This request is currently being considered by the office of the immigration minister,” a Brown rep told The Guardian“We respect their right to review this request and have faith that a decision will be made with the full consideration of his continued personal growth, ongoing philanthropic endeavors and desire to perform for his fans.”

In 2009, Brown reached a plea deal in a case about assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna, and it seems it is still haunting him today. Brown received no jail time back then and instead attended counseling, was put on probation and performed community service.

Brown was supposed to perform several shows during December in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth, with tickets going on sale Monday. However, it seems as if Brown's attendance hangs in the balance.

Brown has toured the continent twice in the past — in 2009 and 2011 — but officials have since clamped down on domestic violence. Australia also denied famed boxer Floyd Mayweather a visa earlier this year following violence-related issues.

Advocacy organization "Get Up" released a petition earlier this month demanding that Brown not be let in the country because it would make Australia look like it doesn't take domestic violence seriously.

Brown has had quite the year. In July he got stuck in the Philippines after a contract dispute went wrong. Brown allegedly failed to perform a concert after he was paid. Then, earlier this month, Brown made headlines when he was sued after a fan got shot at one of his concerts.

Brown, like his rep, is confident the Australians will welcome him soon. “Don’t listen [to] the bulls---," he wrote on Twitter. “It's media and all bulls---."

He added, "We gone party."

Business Insider has reached out to Brown for comment.

Drake just did something only 4 artists have done in history

Drake

Drake has had quite the year. He released a collaborative mixtape with Future and the hip-hop mogul now has had 100 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 since the start of his career just six years ago. If you're keeping count, that's roughly 16 songs per year.

The Toronto-based rapper was at 92 songs before his mixtape dropped last Sunday, but an astounding 8 of 11 songs topped the charts. According to Billboard, only four people/groups have done that since 1958 when they first started keeping track.

The Glee cast has had the most singles top the Billboard Hot 100 (207), followed by Lil Wayne (127), Elvis Presley (108), then Drake.

The mixtape titled "What a Time to Be Alive" also debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Drake's second album able to make that claim this year.

Drake's song "Hotline Bling" is also up to No. 4 on the Hot 100 chart. The song isn't part of his new mixtape.

So far, 2015 has been the year of Drake and if his rumored album "Views From The 6" drops later this year, his dominance could continue.

Trevor Noah starts his 'Daily Show' reign with strong jokes and a thank you to Jon Stewart

Trevor Noah firsrt night

The Trevor Noah era on "The Daily Show" began Monday night with laughs and humility.

The new host sat behind a new desk on a new set with some fun ice breakers to get things moving:

"This is surreal for me, I'm not going to lie, growing up in the dusty streets of South Africa I could never dream of having two things, really," said Noah. "An indoor toilet and a job as host of 'The Daily Show.' And now I have both. And I'm quite comfortable with one of them."

Noah also touched on others who didn't take the hosting job after Jon Stewart left.

"Why isn't a woman hosting the show, because surely it's about time. It turns out that they did ask women to host and the women turned it down because they had better things to do, and clearly knew something I didn't," said Noah.

"Also, why didn't they get an American to host?" Noah continued. "Again, Comedy Central tried and those people also declined. So once more a job Americans rejected is now being done by an immigrant."

The jokes got some big laughs. But Noah ended his opening with some sincerity as he said thank you to Stewart.

"Thank you Jon," said Noah. "Thank you for believing in me, I'm not quite sure what you saw in me but I will work every day to find it. And I'll make sure you don't look like the crazy old dude who left his inheritance to some kid from Africa."

He also thanked "The Daily Show" viewers for tuning in "as we continue the war on bulls--t."

A strong start for Noah.

Ridley Scott learned about water on Mars two months ago but couldn't put it in 'The Martian'

The Martian final

Warning: Spoilers ahead

Everyone went nuts over the announcement on Monday by NASA that it has discovered liquid saltwater on the surface of Mars.

That is, everyone except filmmaker Ridley Scott.

The 77-year-old director of "The Martian" (opening Friday) told The New York Times on Monday that the head of NASA showed him the photos of water on the surface of Mars two months ago.

In "The Martian," an adaption of Andy Weir's book of the same name, we follow Astronaut Mark Watney as he is stranded alone on Mars and must survive on the planet until NASA can mount a rescue (which would take years).

In the film, Watney (played by Matt Damon) must not only grow food but come up with a creative way to make water.

However, Scott told the Times that if he knew of the Mars water before production began he would have changed the story.

Ridley Scott“He’d’ve found the edge of a glacier, definitely. It would be fascinating,” said Scott. “But then I would’ve lost a great sequence. He has to make water, and the steaming device, and put up the plastic tents, which creates the humidity, which grows the plants, which is the most basic form of irrigation. They still do it in Spain that way.”

As a major part of the movie is how Watney survives on Mars, including the Mars water in the story would have vastly changed "The Martian." Not to mention that Scott and screenwriter Drew Goddard would have veered far from Weir's book.

Regardless, the new discovery shouldn't disrupt your enjoyment of the movie when you see it this weekend. Water is vital, but it's not the only challenge Watney has to face.

trevor noah the daily show premiere

With Jon Stewart's big shoes to fill, Trevor Noah overwhelmingly won the social media audience with his Tuesday debut on "The Daily Show." But not only that, he got a lot of help from home.

According to New York-based social intelligence company Brandwatch, Noah and the show has been mentioned in at least 95,000 tweets since yesterday.

When it came to winning over viewers, Noah was certainly on top. A huge 93% of the tweets during the premiere episode were positive.

On top of that, Noah never had a sour moment. The positivity of the tweets never dropped lower than 75% during the show.

Trevor Noah Sentiment by Minute

But this extra bit of data is pretty touching. His home country of South Africa really showed up to support him. While the U.S. generated the most tweets about the show, South Africa came in second with 11% of the total tweets about "TDS."

Comcast is launching Watchable, a major video platform to rival Facebook and Google

Comcast watchable

Comcast is beta-launching Watchable, a major new video platform with content from big-name partners.

Business Insider first broke the news about Watchable earlier this year.

Comcast is launching Watchable with partnerships with major digital publishers like Comcast-backed Vox and Buzzfeed, news sites like Vice, Fast Company, and Mic, and legacy brands like Discovery and NBCUniversal.

The point of Watchable is to create a widespread digital-video platform that rivals the online video efforts of Facebook and YouTube.

Comcast will let iOS, watchable.com and Comcast X1 users watch advertising-supported content. Watchable also rivals Verizon's rumored video platform.

Comcast already has a smart-TV solution called Xfinity. The X1 set-top boxes allow users to stream unlimited amounts of movies and shows on demand from their televisions or mobile devices.

Over the next few years, sources told Business Insider in August, Comcast plans to switch out all of its subscribers' boxes for X1 boxes, which could extend a platform like Watchable from just a few million households today to tens of millions of Comcast subscriber homes by 2017.

"We think Watchable can be a unique place that curates and distributes the best content from some of the most recognized brands and producers on the web," Comcast said in an announcement Tuesday.

"Plus, many of our Watchable partners have not traditionally had distribution on the TV and we can give them a path to reach new audiences and further monetize their content on the biggest screen in the home."

"Comcast is currently the largest seller of video ads in the United States," a source familiar with Watchable told Business Insider in August. "As platforms shift to digital, Comcast doesn't want to lose market share, but they're losing it to YouTube and Facebook."

Tom Cruise's rumored Scientology retreat in the Hollywood Hills just sold for a loss at $11.4 million

tom cruise hollywood hillsTom Cruise has reportedly sold his Hollywood Hills compound for $1.6 million under the asking price.

The gated, European-style villa, which was listed in March for $13 million, is said to have closed at $11.4 million, which is slightly less than the actor paid for it.

According to Variety, it's rumored that Cruise used the 2.5 acre property as a retreat for high-level Scientologists. Recently, Cruise's sister was living on the property.

The estate comprises two parcels of land with a main house and guest house. The latter was purchased by Cruise for $1.8 million shortly after he bought the main property in 2005 for $9.85 million, bringing the total to $11.65 million, not including any home improvements Cruise may have made.

The movie star seems to be undergoing a real estate overhaul. In November of last year he listed his Colorado estate for $59 million, and back in 2013 he listed his New York townhouse for $28 million, as well as an East Village condo for $3 million. He currently lives in a Beverly Hills mansion he bought for $30.5 million in 2007, according to Variety.

According to Variety, the estate is rumored to have been a not-so-secret Scientology retreat.

The property has both a 4,965-square-foot main residence as well as a separate 1,742-square-foot guest house. The main house has oak floors and Venetian plaster walls.

Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj will star in and executive produce her own television comedy on ABC Family.

The youth-skewing cable channel has given the show a series order, according to a network press release.

“This is one of the more unique adventures I've ever embarked on,” said Minaj in a statement. “I couldn't be more proud and excited to team up with an amazing group of people to give the world something really special.”

The half-hour comedy will be based on Minaj's family and their immigration from Trinidad in the early 1990s. It will focus on her growing up in Queens, New York, as well as her musical roots and evolution into a star.

The series, which will be a single-camera comedy like "The Office," "Modern Family," and "Parks and Recreation," is set to begin production this winter in Queens.

The pilot episode was written by Kate Angelo, whose credits include “Will and Grace” and “Bernie Mac.” Angelo will also serve as an executive producer, alongside Minaj, Aaron Kaplan (“Life in Pieces,” “Chasing Life, and “Divorce”), Stella Bulochnikov and Brian Sher (“Boss”), and Gee Roberson.

“Nicki Minaj is a force to be reckoned with at everything she touches,” said ABC Family's programming and development Executive Vice President, Karey Burke, said. “We’re beyond thrilled to bring her one-of-a-kind story to our channel. Nicki is an international superstar, yet not everyone knows how inspiring and hilarious her true story is, and we can’t wait to share it with the world.”

Minaj has the highest digital sales for any female artist in history, with over 50 million track sales between solo and feature performances. She also holds the record for most Hot 100 entries on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.

Outside of music, Minaj has been featured in the films “Ice Age: Continental Drift” and “The Other Woman.” She also served as a judge on “American Idol” for one season.

x files reboot fox 2015

After a string of tiny teasers, Fox finally released the first trailers for its "X-Files" revival.

Aired during Monday night's episodes of "Gotham" and "Minority Report," the trailers find Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) in a fever.

Netflix will now give its subscribers free WiFi on Virgin America flights (NFLX)

netflixNetflix is partnering with Virgin America to bring its subscribers a nifty perk — free streaming of the entire Netflix catalog during Virgin flights.

Using internet on flights has become one of the most annoying devil’s bargains of flying recently. Even if you have the cash to shell out $10 for a few hours of internet, the fact that airlines are charging that much can just make your blood boil.

But Netflix users on Virgin’s new ViaSat WiFi–equipped aircraft will now have unlimited streaming on phones, tablets, or laptops, at no extra cost through March 2, 2016.

"As WiFi becomes more ubiquitous, it's going to be increasingly possible for members to enjoy Netflix wherever they want," said Bill Holmes, Netflix's global head of business development.

Holmes envisions a world where we never have to stop binge-watching, which is simultaneously both amazing and scary. Is free Netflix on planes one step toward utopia or a dystopia straight out of Pixar's "Wall-E?" Can we even tell the difference?

For now, I think we can all agree that free Netflix on planes will at least stop us, in the short term, from feeling like we are hemorrhaging money through the millions in small fees airlines are now charging.

It’s no surprise that Virgin America is the first airline that Netflix has partnered with. The company is based in Silicon Valley and has been known for its trendy mood lighting and expansive entertainment offerings.

This is how it will work, according to Netflix:

Guests on aircraft equipped with the new ViaSat WiFi service will be notified by the Virgin America in–flight team that they can access high–speed WiFi.

Guests can then open their browser and login for free by selecting the "VirginAmerica" ViaSat network and will then be prompted to either login to their existing Netflix account or to create a new, 30–day free trial account, after which they will then be connected to the Netflix service at 35,000 feet, just like they would on the ground.

Existing account holders will be able to access Netflix through their mobile device, tablet or laptop onboard ViaSat equipped Virgin America aircraft at no additional cost through March 2, 2016, while new members can sign up to enjoy a free 30–day free Netflix trial – good for use both in the air, on Virgin America's ViaSat–equipped aircraft, or on the ground

NASA’s top planetary scientist told us what he thinks of the science in 'The Martian'

The Martian final

Spoiler alert if you haven't read "The Martian."

Scientists may have just discovered water flowing on the surface of Mars, but it's still a pretty inhospitable place to call home.

Yet that's exactly what Matt Damon's character, a NASA astronaut stranded on the Red Planet, does in the upcoming film "The Martian," based on the best-selling novel by Andy Weir.

NASA's head of planetary science Jim Green was a consultant on the film, which premieres nationwide on Friday October 2. We chatted with Green about just how much science the movie gets right.

"What Andy did is kind of unique in science fiction," Green told Business Insider, referring to Andy Weir, the author of the book. While a lot of sci-fi centers around things that are not possible in our current understanding of science, "Andy decided to write science fiction about a future which would be bounded by the laws we know."

Here's the inside scoop from Green about what's scientifically accurate in the movie:

Mars' biggest challenges

1. It's extremely cold.

The first problem anyone visiting the Red Planet would face is the fact that it is an extremely cold, harsh environment. The temperature swings dramatically, for example, sometimes between as many as 120 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit in a day, said Green.

In the book and film, the main character, astronaut Mark Watney (played by Damon) travels long distances in a solar-powered rover. But he doesn't have enough power to drive the rover and keep it heated, so to keep himself warm, he uses a generator which produces heat from radioactive decay.

Turns out, NASA has a similar generator, only they use theirs to power the real Curiosity rover. The agency also plans to install one of these on the rover it plans to send to Mars in 2020. The excess heat will be used to keep the rover's instruments functioning (but it's risky to use around humans because of the risk of radiation exposure).

2. You can't breathe the air

Next there's the problem of oxygen, the life-giving gas we take for granted on Earth. The atmosphere of Mars is very thin, contains mostly carbon dioxide, and has less than 0.15% oxygen, compared with that of Earth, which has more than 20% oxygen.

In the film, Watney's habitat or "hab" has an oxygenator, a device that sucks in carbon dioxide, zaps it with electricity, and spits out oxygen (for breathing) and carbon monoxide (as waste).

This technology is pretty realistic as well. The International Space Station has an oxygenator that splits water to produce air for the astronauts to breathe. Green said NASA plans to send such an oxygenator to Mars on its 2020 rover as a proof-of-concept that they can convert carbon dioxide into breathable air.

3. There's no food.

Then there's the issue of food, and the fact that Mars doesn't have any crops or livestock.

In the book and film, Watney's mission was only supposed to last 30 days, but because of a rogue dust storm that causes him to be left behind by his crewmates, he must find a way to survive for more than a year. Being a botanist, he figures out he can grow potatoes in the hab by fertilizing Martian soil with his own feces and moistening the soil with water generated by burning hydrazine, a flammable liquid from rocket fuel.

This part differs a bit from reality. As it turns out, Green said, NASA is finding that the soil on Mars is much more moist beneath the surface than once imagined, and contains nitrates and other minerals that nourish plants. So Watney may not have needed to go to those lengths to make water and fertilize the soil — he could simply dig up some Martian soil and thaw it out to grow his food.

4. You might get lonely or go crazy

As if the other problems weren't enough, Watney faces the psychological burden of being stranded on a planet millions of miles from home with virtually no human contact. In the film and book, Watney gets by using his sense of humor, by throwing himself into the work of survival, and by focusing intently on problems as they surface, taking things one step at a time.

The stress and isolation Watney faces are not unlike those faced by real spacefarers. NASA astronaut candidates go through a rigorous selection process, which involves thorough psychological evaluations. And outside of NASA, many people have endured extreme isolation (such as prisoners of war) and survived mentally intact.

So overall, how does the scientific accuracy of "The Martian" compare to other sci-fi films? It's the only film Green has worked on, but "it's certainly the most accurate one about Mars," he said.

Lena Dunham says 'Girls' will probably end after 6 seasons

"Girls" creator and star Lena Dunham hasn't changed her mind on the end of "Girls." She says Season 6 is still probably the HBO show's last hurrah.

“Never say never, but that is the way that we’re thinking about it right now and we’re starting to think about sort of how to wrap up the storylines of these particular young women,” Dunham said on "Elvis Duran and the Morning Show" on Tuesday.

Girls Show HBO-Comedy-"Girls" followed Hannah (Dunham) as she dated her way though Brooklyn, New York and tripped over herself trying to find a literary life after college. Her friends all have their share of romantic lessons and life decisions to make, as well.

“I started working on this show when I was 23," Dunham pointed out. "And now I’m going to be 30, so it kind of feels right that this show kind of sandwiched my 20s and then I go off into the world!”

In April, Dunham explained to Variety that she appreciated a tightly told story.

“I think America has a tendency to push shows past their due dates,” she said. “I like the British model — in and out.”

"Girls" is currently shooting its fifth season and returns to HBO in January 2016.
