Oscar Isaac's monumental rise from ska band member to 'Star Wars' superstar

Oscar Isaac as pilot Poe Dameron

Ever since his breakout role in 2013's "Inside Llewyn Davis," Oscar Isaac has become one of Hollywood's most reliably great actors. He has often been compared to actors such as Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.

After an Oscar-worthy turn this year in "Ex Machina," Isaac prepares for the next huge move of his career. In December, he will play pilot Poe Dameron in "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens."

Before becoming the acclaimed actor that he is today though, Isaac took a different path to show business success. He took all the guitar skills he picked up as a child and tried to make a living as a musician.

Oscar Isaac Inside Llewyn Davis

While living in Florida, where he grew up, Isaac served as frontman for a ska-punk band called The Blinking Underdogs. Isaac was a member of the band long before he went off to acting school at Julliard.

The group formed in Miami. During their brief run together, the band had some strong successes. They performed at Warped Tour and even opened for Green Day.

The group disbanded in 2001. The last news update on their website, posted on September 24, 2001, comes from band member Nick and announces Isaac's departure:

Hello everyone, Nick here. For those of you who don't know we are taking a break as of now while Oscar attends acting school at Julliard in NYC. We will be playing on his breaks or whenever we can. Check back here for shows that will be booked in the future.

Another bit if info on the band, when we do get back together, it is going to be a different band than what it was when we were a 6 piece. We aren't going to have horns, after losing Alan it just wasn't the same group horn wise and the song writing has been steering away from that style a bit. Most likely the group will be a 4 piece, 2 guitars, bass and drums. This past summer we experimented with this grouping and it seemed to work very well. That's it for now, check back for more in the near future.

Nick

While the Blinking Underdogs are no longer together, they continue to exist online.

A fan page for them exists on Facebook. This page includes lots of old photos of the band performing. In many of them, Isaac is barely recognizable. Most of their songs are up on online as well.

A few of them can be found on YouTube:

Creative people often don't like to talk about their early projects. Sometimes, they might be embarrassed by them. In an interview with The Telegraph, Isaac admitted that he isn't very proud of his abilities as a lead singer.

"I was never much of a singer. I was terrible," he admitted. "It’s embarrassing, I was trying to sound like everybody else. I went through a big Cure phase so I was trying to do that kind of dramatic voice."

Yet, this helped him with his career in a big way.

Isaac's breakout role came in "Inside Llewyn Davis." In the film he plays a musician struggling to make it in the 1960s Greenwich Village folk scene. One of the reasons he was eventually cast in the film was for his abilities to actually sing and play guitar.

Maybe he wasn't great as a lead singer, but he sure makes a good solo act:

You can see Isaac next in HBO's new series "Show Me a Hero" which premieres August 16 at 8 p.m. He'll be in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" when it hits theaters December 18, 2015.

NOW WATCH: Here's why the new 'Star Wars' movie might stink

Everything you need to know about the cast of 'Rogue One,' the first 'Star Wars' spin-off movie

$

Rogue One Cast

"Rogue One" is going to be a different kind of "Star Wars" film.

The first of three planned spin-off movies to be released in the years between Episodes VII-IX, they're an opportunity to tell stories in the "Star Wars" universe with a different sort of feel than the grand space opera fans know and love.

"Rogue One" takes place before "Episode IV: A New Hope" and tells the story of a group of resistance fighters and their mission to steal the plans for the Death Star. At this summer's recent D23 expo, the movie's cast was unveiled — and though we don't know the name of their characters or what roles they'll be playing, it's a pretty exciting bunch.

Get to know the cast of "Rogue One":

Felicity Jones finally gets a big role after getting nominated for an Oscar last year.

More than any other cast member in this movie, there's some heavy speculation about who Jones will be playing in this movie. The favorite rumor right now is that she's the daughter of Boba Fett — but that's one to take with an enormous grain of salt given that Boba Fett is a name that is always thrown around by speculators whenever there's a "Star Wars" mystery to solve.

While Jones has been acting since the late '90s — she's appeared on shows like "Doctor Who" and had a minor role in "Amazing Spider-Man 2" that would have ostensibly led to a bigger part in the now-scrapped series — she received much acclaim (and an Oscar nomination) for playing Jane Hawking opposite Eddie Redmayne in the Stephen Hawking bio pic "The Theory of Everything."

Ben Mendelsohn will likely play an intense villain.

A character actor with a penchant for playing villainous people in the States and a longtime leading man in his native Australia, Ben Mendelsohn is an actor you've almost certainly seen (most likely as Dagget in "The Dark Knight Rises") but whose face you'll likely recognize more than his name.

Mendelsohn is an intense, unsettling performer in his best roles (like Danny Rayburn in Netflix's "Bloodline"), and given that he doesn't seem to be pictured with Felicity Jones in the released cast photo, he might be playing a villain.

He does look like he'd be a good fit for an Imperial uniform, no?

Mexican actor Diego Luna also appears to suit up with the Rogue One team.

A Mexican actor who exploded on the scene with 2001's "Y Tu Mamá También," Diego Luna spent much of his career in Spanish-language cinema, occasionally surfacing in big films like  "The Terminal" and landing a pivotal role in the Academy Award-nominated "Milk."

Drake finally addressed the shootings at his after party through a heartfelt letter

drake

After almost two weeks of silence since a deadly shooting at an after party hosted by Drake, the superstar Canadian rapper finally expressed his emotions about the violence.

"The last few days I have been in a moral bind," he said in a blog post on his website Friday.

Two people were killed and three were injured on August 4 at an event following Drake's widely known concert held in Toronto every year, OVO Fest.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the event was advertised as "the official OVO fest after-party, hosted by Drake with music by Charlie B."

It is still unclear whether or not Drake was in the club at the time of the shooting. Violence also broke out at the event in 2014, leaving one man hospitalized.

In the letter, Drake spoke to the fact that he wanted to respond to the violence earlier but his "trusted advisors" were worried his words would be taken out of context.

"However, today I am choosing to follow my heart," he said.

"I stare into the eyes of so many young people and I wish to see them all shine as bright as they possibly can in this lifetime," he wrote in the letter. "I encourage my generation to show as much value and gratitude as you can for the lives we have been gifted."

Drake also gave his love to the families of both victims killed in the shooting — Duvel Hibbert, 23, and Ariela Navarro-Fenoy, 26. "My deepest condolences go out to the Navarro-Fenoy and Hibbert families for their loss of Ariela and Duvel."

The rapper, who is known for being synonymous with Toronto ended the letter asking citizens of his city to come together, and referencing the city's family feel.

"Although Toronto is globally viewed as a major city, at the core we are still a small close-knit community, and it is our public responsibility to ensure the safety and well being of one another," he wrote. "We need each other to further our communities for generations to come."

Screen Shot 2015 08 17 at 3.15.29 PM

"Saturday Night Live" veterans Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, and Seth Meyers have a new six-part IFC series called "Documentary Now!" in which they parody some of the world's best known documentaries. As the Documentary Now! website explains, "each episode is shot in a different style of documentary filmmaking, and honors some of the most important stories that didn't actually happen."

One of Hader and Armisen's first victims is the popular HBO documentary series VICE, created by Brooklyn-based VICE Media. Much has been written about the unique culture of VICE, and Hader and Armisen do their best to lampoon that culture as intrepid reporters for the Brooklyn-based news outlet Dronez. Jack Black also makes an appearance as Dronez founder Jamison Friend, a character that bears a striking resemblance to VICE Media co-founder Shane Smith. In this installment, Dronez is on the hunt for Mexican drug kingpin El Chingon.

As Friend explains, "the world is nuts, and nobody knows what's going to happen next. But whatever goes down we'll be there, keeping a close eye on all the madness. This is the world of Dronez."

Seamless, Comedy Central drop The Fat Jew — but it's not because of the plagiarism controversy

$

fat jew comedy central seamlessSure, Josh Ostrovsky aka The Fat Jew is having a terrible few months. He has been accused of being a plagiarist by fellow comedians and others on the internet. And, reports have tied that outrage to the comedian losing a TV deal and a marketing campaign.

But, the parties involved told Business Insider the outrage has nothing to do with their decisions to end their professional relationships with the Instagram famous comedian.

Things got bad for Ostrovsky after The Hollywood Reporter broke the news last week that he had signed with entertainment agency CAA "for representation in all areas."

That set off a wave of accusations from Ostrovsky's internet and comedy colleagues claiming that he had been plagiarizing his jokes for years.

The outrage grew so loud that THR decided to update its story with an open letter comedian Davon Magwood wrote about Ostrovsky earlier this month. In the letter, Magwood accused Ostrovsky of posting his joke without attribution. In fact, Ostrovsky is known for "aggregating" jokes and sharing them on his Instagram account without credit. Ostrovsky later gave Magwood his credit.

Among Ostrovsky's many detractors is actor and comedian Patton Oswalt, who posted and retweeted several tweets directed to the comedian.

The outrage further seemed to endanger Ostrovsky's career when Splitsider.com reported that the comedian's Comedy Central project is now dead, which BI confirmed with the network.

Yet, an individual with knowledge of the project told BI that the script deal never progressed to pilot stage and had actually been killed several months ago and had nothing to do with the accusations of plagiarism against Ostrovsky.

But, it doesn't stop there. DeathandTaxes.com reports that online food delivery service Seamless, which has used Ostrovsky in its marketing, has no further plans to work with him.

On the other hand, a Seamless rep told BI that "the campaign was coming to a close (the end of this month) as was always the case." So, the advertisements were coming down September 1 regardless of the controversy swirling around Ostrovsky.

The Fat Jew's other projects seem to be moving forward at this point. His modeling contract with One Management Agency is still on, BI has confirmed. He recently launched a new wine, White Girl Rosé, and his upcoming first book, Money Pizza Respect, with Grand Central Publishing, is still available for pre-order.

CAA didn't immediately respond to BI's request for comments.

Calvin Harris defends girlfriend Taylor Swift in Twitter feud over Spotify profits

Taylor Swift is currently at the center of a big Twitter feud, but she hasn't even tweeted once.

It all started when former One Direction boy bander Zayn Malik retweeted a post by popular Twitter account "Bitch Problems" that showed a side-by-side picture of Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift with the text "the difference is astounding," and featured quotes from each.

The post has since been deleted, but on Swift’s picture was a quote about why she removed her music from Spotify: "[People] can still listen to my music if they get it on iTunes. I’m always up for trying something. And I tried it and I didn’t like the way it felt. I think there should be an inherent value placed on art."

On Cyrus' photo was a quote from the singer about her Happy Hippie Foundation: "I’ve made my money. If no one buys my album, cool. It’s fine. I’ve got a house, and I’ve got dogs that I love. I don’t need anything else."

Miley Cyrus Taylor SwiftTaylor Swift's boyfriend, DJ Calvin Harris, saw the tweet and immediately went after Zayn Malik for retweeting it, mockingly saying, "f--- the 99% of musicians who depend on these services to survive right?"

Calvin Harris

Taylor Swift Calvin HarrisMalik, 22, defended himself by responding to Harris and insulting his 31 years of age.

Zayn Malik

Harris then backtracked a bit and apologized to Malik:

While Swift is no stranger to Twitter feuds these days, she has yet to respond to the latest exchange.

Swift has, however, been vocal in her distaste for Spotify but her appreciation of Apple. Earlier this month, the singer told Vanity Fair:

"Apple treated me like I was a voice of a creative community that they actually cared about," she said. "And I found it really ironic that the multibillion-dollar company reacted to criticism with humility, and the startup with no cash flow reacted to criticism like a corporate machine."

Why Amy Schumer still lives in a tiny one-bedroom walk-up apartment in New York City

Amy Schumer

With a hit summer movie, an Emmy nod for her show on Comedy Central, and an HBO special in the works, Amy Schumer's career is at an all-time high.

But all that success hasn't affected her spending habits. The 34-year-old comedian is still living in a small apartment in New York City.

Schumer recently told Radio 1’s Scott Mills, "I’m like the richest person I know and I have a one-bedroom and a walk-up. My bed folds up into the wall and I iron there."

As for why she hasn't upgraded, Schumer said, "Everyone says I’ll make money on the next thing, but they’ve been saying that for 11 years."

Amy Schumer Cheers GIF

Schumer has quite the rocky history with New York City real estate.

She has lived on the Upper West Side, Chinatown, Murray Hill, Williamsburg, and reportedly now Chelsea.

In 2011, Schumer talked to BrickUnderground about her apartment woes:

I moved to NYC to become an actress in 2003 when I graduated from college. I found a small studio for the monthly rent of $1,275 in Chinatown via Craigslist where I dealt with a shady broker — again with my habit of gravitating towards abusive relationships — who tried to give me advice on how to hack it in this city. I thought I could afford the place but soon had to get a roommate — in a STUDIO. I placed an ad on Craigslist and found a student from Ohio willing to pay for half the rent to sleep on a loft bed. Luckily she was great and we’d sit around watching 'Sex and the City.' Neither of us had much of a social life as bringing someone home was really tricky.

From there, Schumer moved to "a huge 2BR duplex in Chelsea for only $1,600 a month" where she only had to pay $800 a month, but things didn't work out because "the only issue with the apartment was the roommate was a big slut."

So Schumer, who grew up on the Upper East Side, packed up and headed to her own studio apartment on the Upper West Side.

"I found it through a broker and truly love it," she said at the time. "I continue to appreciate the neighborhood and am thrilled I have no bugs. What irritates me is the size. With my bike housed in my apartment, it is tiny. It has everything that a big house would but shoved into a ridiculously small area. The closets weren’t built correctly so to open one door I have maneuver myself in weird positions, like Indiana Jones."

One day she hopes to purchase her dream home — "a penthouse in the West Village by the water."

In the 2011 interview with BrickUnderground, Schumer, who has always rented, revealed that "I did think about buying but unfortunately the banker said I am far away from being able to afford it. Someday … someday."

With Schumer's latest movie, "Trainwreck," raking in over $111 million worldwide at the box office on just a $35 million budget, it looks like someday may be today.

During a weekend interview with The New York Times, Donald Trump managed to work in a dis against Heidi Klum.

Trump, 69, declared that the 42-year-old supermodel was "no longer a 10."

"Sometimes I do go a little bit far — Heidi Klum. Sadly, she’s no longer a 10," the Republican presidential hopeful said when talking about how he "can survive dissing John McCain and rating Heidi Klum when that would be a death knell for someone like Scott Walker."

Klum heard the feedback loud and clear, and responded by posting a video shrugging off the dis.

In the video, a man wearing a Donald Trump mask rips off the "10" on Klum's shirt to reveal a "9.99" rating.

The Facebook comments have been overwhelmingly in support of Klum and against "bully" Donald Trump:

Trump Klum comments
After previously bashing Fox News' Megyn Kelly as "not very tough and not very sharp," Trump tried to defend his treatment of women in the same Times interview that he dissed Klum, saying: "I have many women executives and they are paid at least as much as the men. I find women to be amazing."

"Real Housewives of New Jersey" star Teresa Giudice and husband Joe Giudice's vacation home will be up for auction on Tuesday and could go for as little as $100, the Ocean County Sheriff's Office told Business Insider.

According to the couple's bankruptcy filings, they owed $550,266 on the Jersey Shore house, which is located at 49 Sylvia Lane in Stafford, New Jersey.

Theoretically, the house could sell for $100 because that is the minimum first bid set by the Ocean County Sheriff's Office. Bids will then be accepted in $1,000 increments until the property is sold to the highest bidder. All proceeds will go to paying off what the Giudices owe the banks.

According to a listing on Realtor.com, the 1,350 square foot, one story house has five bedrooms and two full bathrooms.

Suge Knight isn't able to see 'Straight Outta Compton' from jail, but here's why his lawyer says he won't like it

Suge Knight AP

Following the huge box office for the N.W.A. biopic ‘Straight Outta Compton’ over the weekend, there’s a lot of handshakes and back slapping going around Hollywood. But one person that likely isn’t that happy is Suge Knight.

The Wrap talked to the former rap mogul’s lawyer, Thomas Mesereau, who is representing Knight for allegedly running over and killing one man, injuring another, with his truck following a promotional shoot for “Straight Outta Compton” on January 29.

According to Mesereau, Knight wouldn’t like the movie because “it is exaggerated and silly and ridiculous,” The Wrap reports.

In the film, Knight is portrayed as a bodyguard who is looking to get into the music business and does so through tactics of intimidation and violence.

In one scene, Knight looks on as a man only wearing his underwear is terrorized by a pit bull in the offices of Knight's Death Row label. In another scene, when Knight sees someone has parked in his parking space, he gets out of his car and beats up the man.

“A lot of the media does not realize how many good things he did for people, particularly in his community,” Mesereau said of his client to The Wrap. “He financed athletic facilities in schools, he gave money to the homeless, money to people in need. Meet the composer behind spy thriller 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' and the much-anticipated Steve Jobs biopic

Man From Uncle 2 Daniel Smith

With over 100 credits on movies and TV, Daniel Pemberton, 35, is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after composers in Hollywood.

And 2015 looks to be a banner year for the Englishman as he takes on two high-profile projects, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” (currently in theaters) and “Steve Jobs” (out October 9).

“Kiss goodbye to your life,” Pemberton told Business Insider this week while taking a break from putting the final touches on the “Steve Jobs” score at the legendary Abbey Road recording studio in London.

The work has been constant for over a year for Pemberton, but he's not complaining. Working alongside some of the biggest names in the business has allowed Pemberton to create music he believes is different than what we’re hearing often in today’s movies.

That’s what got him the gig on “U.N.C.L.E.,” a reboot of the 1964 spy comedy starring Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, and Alicia Vikander.

Director Guy Richie was weaving through the usual composers the film’s studio Warner Bros. had compiled for him when he came across Pemberton’s show reel.

Richie offered Pemberton the job on the spot and worked on the music for “U.N.C.L.E.” for the next 11 months.

“Guy’s feeling is if you’ve seen it or heard it before why do it again,” said Pemberton, who was intimidated at first to work with Richie as his films always have such a unique sounds.

“His last movies were the ‘Sherlock Holmes’ films which had fantastic scores by Hans Zimmer!” said Pemberton, referring to the legendary composer.

But Pemberton believes what settled him was the way Richie wanted the music made. Instead of the typical plan of having a composer come in toward the end of post production and spend a few months with an orchestra creating the sound, Richie had Pemberton involved once editing began.

“I think one of the most important things when you write a film score is having room to fail,” Pemberton said. “If you have room to fail you can try great, crazy ideas, that’s really exciting.”

With time to develop the score, Pemberton brought in individual musicians to try out different ideas.

The breakthrough came when he brought in a bass flute.

“We tried a lot of different ideas over the big car chase that opens the movie and Guy felt [the sound] was too predictable,” Pemberton recalled.

Man From Uncle chase“And then suddenly I did some work with this amazing flute player Dave Heath who normally plays classical concertos. I was like, ‘Show me the crazy noises you can make that no one lets you do.’ What he did I thought was really cool, so I started writing something around that sound, recorded it and Guy was really into that and it ended up being a big part of the sound in the film.”

Here's some shots of Pemberton hard at work with his musicians:

On the film for the last 9 months, Pemberton says it’s very different from creating the score for “U.N.C.L.E.”

Steve Jobs.JPG“What we’re trying to do with 'Steve Jobs' is going to be a surprise in some ways,” he said. “The film is a very clear three act structure and we have a device that is trying to play with that in the score.”

Pemberton wouldn’t go into anymore detail about the sound in “Steve Jobs,” as the score could be faintly heard on his end of the phone during our interview.

“If I told you what was happening right now you’d be like, ‘What the hell?,’” he said.

Intel Curie Module

Intel has been making a push into connected devices lately, and now it's going to promote those devices using a reality TV show.

On Tuesday, Intel announced a partnership with Turner and Mark Burnett, the famed producer behind hit reality shows "Shark Tank" and "Survivor," to produce a new TV show called "America's Greatest Makers."

The goal of the show, which will air on Turner-subsidiary TBS starting next year, is to create “the next big wearable or smart-connected device," according to Variety.

Intel has a tiny, button-sized chip called Curie, which is intended for use in wearbale or smart-connected devices, and the new TV show will feature devices built with it. Turner is also expected to launch a strong advertising campaign of the show across its media platform, including TNT, CNN, and Bleacher Report.

Burnett's team is reported to have been working with Intel and Turner for months for the new show. The format of the show is unknown at this point, but Burnett told Variety, “This is much more than just a linear TV series. This is the next evolution of storytelling, told simultaneously across many platforms and in many different ways."

The Curie module, first revealed at the CES earlier this year, can be used in devices to track steps or remotely control machines. Intel CEO Brian Krzanich has showcased its capabilities several times, including at an event in April and today at the Intel Developer Forum, where he gesture-controlled spider robots.

Intel has been trying to diversify its revenue stream, which has historically been skewed towards the PC division. The Internet of Things unit, which includes all wearable-related products, is still a tiny part of its overall business, only generating $559 million in sales last quarter, out of the total $13.1 billion quarterly revenue.

'Fort Tilden' is a hilarious wake up call for millennials

fort tilden

You'll know within the first 90 seconds whether or not "Fort Tilden" is for you.

If you don't laugh, or at least smile with recognition, at Harper and Allie's vitriolic opening text exchange, go ahead and watch something else.

The film, written and directed by Sarah-Violet Bliss & Charles Rogers, follows two Brooklynite roommates, Harper (Bridey Elliot) and Allie (Claire McNulty), as they embark on an unexpectedly treacherous journey to a beach in The Rockaways to meet up with a couple guys. This "plot" is merely a vehicle for these characters to come to grips with their quarter-life-crises, and it's almost tragically funny to watch unfold.

Harper is a self-obsessed daddy's girl with absolutely no regard for others. Allie is similarly obnoxious, but in a more understated way that relegates her to Harper's permanent sidecar no matter what awful path she leads them down. These ladies may look nice and innocent, but almost everything that comes out of their mouths is vile, demeaning, or both.

Harper and Allie are truly awful people, but the writers and performers are all in on the joke and really play this up.  In fact, all the characters they encounter along the way are just exaggerated caricatures of every Brooklyn stereotype you've ever heard, and they're a riot.

fort tilden bridey claire"Fort Tilden" is a movie made by millennials, for millennials, that skewers the hell out of millennials. It nails the little details that are everyday occurrences for those of a certain age. For example, Allie and Harper sit next to each other and text snide remarks about how awful the performance they're watching is, which is as real as it gets. Later, Allie needs to put air in her bike tire and she's so clueless that she literally has to watch a YouTube instructional video to figure it out. Infinitely relatable.

These astute, millennial-specific observations pile up, each more spot-on and biting than the last. By the time Harper and Allie gawk at a Bodega owner that doesn't understand the concept of "iced coffee," it's clear that these ladies are only going to get more insufferable, and that's the whole point.

Harper and Allie's existences are so pampered that when faced with actual real world issues, they have absolutely no idea how to respond. For them, a simple trip to the beach becomes an emotionally rocky hellscape ridden with seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

For the 25-and-under crowd, "Fort Tilden" will either register as a hilarious send-up of their millennial existence, or an uncomfortable reminder of the perils of drifting aimlessly.

Watch the trailer below.

"Fort Tilden" is now playing in limited release and available on VOD platforms.
