New York magazine just dropped a bombshell Bill Cosby cover story collecting accounts from 35 women

Screen Shot 2015 07 26 at 10.28.11 PM

Over the last year, the reports about Bill Cosby's alleged sexual assaults have been relentless.

Just last week, the New York Times released a bombshell court deposition revealing how Cosby used sedative drugs in his sexual pursuit of young women

In total, more than 40 women have come forward to accuse Cosby of sexual assault.

Add another story to the list.

On Sunday night, New York Magazine released a stunning cover story, collecting the accounts of 35 of Cosby's accusers to paint a picture of Cosby as an unrepentant, manipulative sexual predator. The cover image is particularly striking. It features all 35 women seated in a row, with an empty 36th chair for the victims that have yet to come forward.

The story itself features a combination of video, photos, individual testimonies and a narrative tying it together. The accounts are harrowing in their detail and similarity. Each woman was interviewed separately.

One account, from Patricia Leary Steuer, a former training and development specialist who encountered Cosby in the late 1970s, is emblematic of the accounts:

Then-22-year-old Steuer worked at the University of Massachusetts and met Cosby there after he gave a lecture in 1978. He offered to mentor Steuer as she pursued a singing career. Cosby later invited her to a dinner party at his Massachusetts home. When Steuer got there, the table was set for just two people. Cosby handed Steuer a drink and insisted she perform an improv exercise, pretending she was a queen with oatmeal covering her face. She began to feel woozy. Her next memory is of Cosby standing above her — her clothes off — in a bathrobe. He handed her a toothbrush, telling her she had gotten sick and passed out in his guestroom. Steuer went home, still unsure of what actually happened to her. Cosby kept in touch, arranging for acting lessons and a gym membership for her. He invited Steuer to events, but nothing more occurred until he asked her to join him in Atlantic City. In the evening, she met him in his suite, where he handed her two large pills and a glass of Champagne. The next morning, she woke up naked in one of the rooms of his suite. Steuer joined on as a Jane Doe in the 2005 Andrea Constand lawsuit; she had initially wanted a pseudonym in New York, but when the news broke that Cosby admitted in depositions that he’d given women quaaludes, she sent an email saying that protection wasn’t necessary. “He can no longer claim that we are lying,” she wrote.

Hulk Hogan Brooke Hogan

Wrestler and reality TV star Hulk Hogan came under fire last week when a transcript of him saying racially insensitive things about his daughter's ex-boyfriend was made public.

The comments got him fired from WWE and Hogan apologized for his statements.

"Eight years ago I used offensive language during a conversation," he said in a statement to People magazine. "It was unacceptable for me to have used that offensive language; there is no excuse for it; and I apologize for having done it."

Brooke (Hogan) Bollea came to her father's defense on Facebook in a poetic status update. The poem titled, "If you knew my father" is about what she says her dad really believes.

"If you knew my father, you know how hard he fought...and the way it brought a smile to people light, medium and dark," Hogan writes.

Here's the poem.

Last night's episode of 'True Detective' proves the show is still must-see TV

true detective ep 6 1 final

Warning: spoilers ahead

Sunday night's episode of "True Detective" was a must-see.

For weeks we've been hearing about these swanky parties with high-end escorts that take place up in the Hollywood Hills, and last night we finally got a peek inside what goes down at one of them.

Following a major shootout at the end of episode 4, in which cops Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams), Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch), and Velcoro (Colin Farrell) believe they took down the guy responsible for city planner Ben Casper's gruesome murder, we see how the three detectives still can't shake the case.

They are now on a special task force to find the missing girl that Bezzerides was looking for at the start of the season. But the real reason is to link collusion between Vinci PD and any state departments. And it's led to Bezzerides getting access into one of the racey parties. The hope is to find some answers.

They end up getting more than they expected.

Bezzerides is driven by bus with other girls to a mansion in the hills.

Blake (Christopher James Baker), one of Frank Semyon's (Vince Vaughn) men, is there running the party.

While outside of the house, Woodrugh and Velcoro look for anything that may help the case.

The drug begins to take effect on Bezzerides.

She's able to grab a knife before heading upstairs with him.

Meanwhile, outside Woodrugh comes across an interesting encounter.

Two of the men Semyon was working with to get the rail line through California off the ground. Looks like they are going forward and keeping Semyon out.

Bezzerides begins to hallucinate. Having visions of this man. Who tells her "you're the prettiest girl I've even seen... I heard there's a unicorn in those woods, want to go out and look for it.?"

true detective ep 6 18

It seems as a young girl this man took advantage of her.

true detective ep 6 20

Bezzerides has a vision as a young girl with the man and also as her current adult self.

true detective ep 6 21

She rushes to the bathroom and tries to throw up the drug.

true detective ep 6 22

There she finds the missing girl she's been looking for since the start of the season.

As that goes on, Woodrugh is able to get into the office where the men were and steal the paperwork they were looking at.

Bezzerides has to fight her way out of the house...

... Stabbing a man in the process.

true detective ep 6 29

Following a hail of gunfire, the detectives and the missing girl ride off into the night.

true detective ep 6 32

Made even more eerie with a light and an almost fantasy score in the background, the ending of episode 6 (with only two episodes left in the season) once more sucks you back into the story, giving us advancement in plot but continuing to build the suspense of what hopefully will be a charged finale.

Actor Jason Segel explains why successful people never really feel successful

0
0

Jason segel

Jason Segel is an accomplished actor who has starred in smash hits including the movie "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and the sitcom "How I Met Your Mother."

To most people, he's a success. But Segel says he doesn't always feel like one.

Segel's latest role, in the coming film "The End of the Tour," is a serious one. He plays David Foster Wallace as the author spends five days being interviewed by a journalist (Jesse Eisenberg).

GQ's Zach Baron interviewed Segel about his new movie and asked the actor asked about his accomplishments.

Even though Segel has worked hard and achieved a lot, Segel said he didn't feel much different than he did nine years ago, when he started filming "How I Met Your Mother."

"You put your heart and soul [into something], and it comes out, and it does as well as it can possibly do," Segel told Baron. "And then you realize that you feel the same. Like, 'Oh, shouldn't this 10 years of incredibly hard work and achievement have made me feel different?'"

Successful people, Segel said, are rarely satisfied even if they reach their goals. They just keep setting the bar higher and higher for themselves.

"I don't think you ever feel like, 'I've gotten there,'" he said. "I think the dangling carrot keeps moving. Part of human nature is this masochistic instinct to constantly narrow the criteria of success so that you're just outside of it."

John Oliver has a great metaphor to explain why mandatory-minimums should end

0

John Oliver

Mandatory-minimum sentencing laws are in HBO host John Oliver's cross-hairs.

On Sunday's episode of "Last Week Tonight," Oliver went off on drug laws from the 1980s and early 1990s that have resulted in prisons overcrowded with inmates serving decades-long sentences for trafficking or selling fairly small amounts of drugs.

Oliver pointed out that some criminals convicted of marijuana trafficking were serving longer sentences than airplane hijackers, terrorists, and child molesters.

"So wait. If my math is right here, this low-level pot dealer received the exact same sentence as would an airplane-hijacking, child-rapist terrorist, a person so evil I legitimately don't know if one ever existed," Oliver said.

The comedian also noted that even though certain states had lowered their sentences for non-violent drug crimes, many convicted before the reforms were enacted were still serving their original, longer sentences.

"Just think about how annoyed you get when people who get seated after you at a restaurant get served and leave before you. Only in this case, the food is prison food, the restaurant is prison, and dinner takes 55 f— years," Oliver said.

Earlier this month, President Barack Obama announced commuted sentences for 46 prisoners convicted of non-violent, drug-related crimes. The commutations were part of the president's push for criminal-justice and sentencing reform that would ease penalties for non-violent drug offenders.

24 people who became highly successful after age 40

vera wang

For the more neurotic among us, a birthday can be a reminder of how another year has passed and our loftiest aspirations have faded further into the distance.

There are plenty of examples, however, of successful people across many industries who prove that you don't need to have it all figured out by the time you turn 30.

We'll take a look at some of them, from renowned fashion designer Vera Wang, who didn't design her first dress until she was 40, to writer Harry Bernstein, who authored countless rejected books before getting his first hit at age 96.

Get inspired by those who show it's never too late.

Stan Lee created his first hit comic, "The Fantastic Four," just shy of his 39th birthday in 1961. In the next few years, he created the legendary Marvel Universe, whose characters such as Spider-Man and the X-Men became American cultural icons.

Donald Fisher was 40 and had no experience in retail when he and his wife, Doris, opened the first Gap store in San Francisco in 1969. The Gap's clothes quickly became fashionable, and today the company is one of the world's largest clothing chains.

Vera Wang was a figure skater and journalist before entering the fashion industry at age 40. Today she's one of the world's premier women's designers.

Caitlyn Jenner's new reality show 'I Am Cait' premieres to huge ratings

"I Am Cait" topped Sunday's cable shows, according to early overnight ratings.

While final ratings are expected on Thursday and E!'s Live plus 3-day ratings totals may not be available until later this week, the preliminary ratings are showing that Caitlyn Jenner's new reality series did pretty well.

According to Variety, "I Am Cait" averaged a 2.1 household rating in Nielsen's metered-markets, the 56 cities whose viewership is tracked by the ratings company. That means it ties with TNT's "The Last Ship" for the night's most-watched cable show. Last week, a similar rating translated to a little more than 3 million viewers.

For comparison, that means it did better than HBO's "True Detective" (1.5), TNT's "Falling Skies" (1.5), and HBO's "Ballers" (1.2).

Abby Wambach Caitlyn JennerJenner has certainly meant ratings gold so far for E! and any other network she touches. The network's Bruce Jenner special gave "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" a 40% bump in ratings with 2.92 million viewers.

The former Olympian's first official public appearance during the Espy Awards gave it quite the boostAccording to Nielsen data, an average of 7.7-million viewers watched the ESPN awards show on ABC. The ESPY Awards averaged 2.2-million viewers in 2014, though it aired on ESPN.

And, let's not forget Jenner's big interview with ABC News' Diane Sawyer. A huge 16.9 viewers watched the special on which Jenner first publicly spoke about being transgender.

Here's what it cost advertisers for 30 seconds during E!'s 'I Am Cait' premiere

0

i am cait e premiere ratings.JPG

It isn't cheap to buy a piece of Caitlyn Jenner's world.

It cost between $90,000 and $200,000 for a 30-second spot during Sunday's premiere episode of "I Am Cait," according to individuals with knowledge of the rates.

Rates clearly varied. For example, Business Insider learned that one senior cable buyer and director at a major broadcast network paid about $100,000 for a 30-second spot during the episode.

Horizon Media's senior vice president of research, Brad Adgate, told BI that he estimated that E! Entertainment would charge four times its typical rate.

For comparison, Ad Age reports that the average cost of 30 seconds in primetime on a broadcast network is $112,000. Of course, that can go up for a high-rated show. "Big Bang Theory," which averaged 16.1 million viewers during its most recent eighth season, charges $344,827 for the time.

Advertisers paid E!'s rate, because Jenner has proven to bring in the viewers for the network. Early overnight ratings show that "I Am Cait" tied for the No. 1 cable show on Sunday and could've been watched by about 3 million viewers. Final ratings are expected later this week.

Also, the network's Bruce Jenner special in May gave "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" a 40% bump in ratings with 2.92 million viewers.

E! representatives didn't immediately respond to BI's request for comment.

The first results from Bobbi Kristina's autopsy are in

Bobbi Kristina Brown

After spending six months in a coma, Bobbi Kristina Brown, the daughter of singer Whitney Houston and R&B star Bobby Brown died on Sunday.

The initial autopsy results are in, and according to Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office, there are no signs of significant injuries.

"The autopsy does not show an obvious underlying cause of death and no significant injuries were noted," the office said in a press release. "No previously unknown medical conditions that could have contributed to death were identified. "

The examiners predict that the entire process will take "several weeks" saying they don't plan to determine anything until "all test results are completed and all investigative, medical, and other documentary records are received and thoroughly reviewed."

In a previous press release, the office specifically referenced the time elapsed between the initial event on January 31st, and Brown's resulting death saying it "will complicate reconstruction of the events surrounding her initial unresponsiveness. "

They added, "Interpretation of autopsy findings and other information will be challenging,"

The Houston family released a statement on Brown's late mother's facebook page: "It is hard to say goodbye. On Sunday, July 26, Bobbi Kristina Brown made her transition peacefully. The family thanks everyone for their loving thoughts and prayers."

Brown will be buried next to her mother, the late Whitney Houston.

Disney is toying with selling ESPN as a standalone service like HBO Now

0
0

Robert Iger, Chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, speaks at the 2014 Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills, California April 28, 2014. REUTERS/Lucy Nicholson

Some old-guard networks — HBO and CBS, to name a few — perceive cable de-bundling as the next goldmine in television, offering affordable standalone apps to those who don’t subscribe to cable or satellite. Others, like Disney, aren’t so sure.

Disney CEO Bob Iger told CNBC’s Squawk Box this morning that ESPN and the company’s other properties might eventually be sold a la carte, but not likely within the next five years.

“Technology is the most disruptive force that so-called traditional media […] is facing,” Iger said. “[But] while the business model may face challenges over the next few years, long term for ESPN […] they’ll be fine.”

It could be inferred that Disney struggles to see value in fixing something most wouldn’t call broken. Income at the company’s cable networks division, which includes ESPN, declined slightly last quarter, but still hit $1.26 billion. Cable providers pay more per subscriber each month to carry ESPN than any other network (the Wall Street Journal reports $6.04, or $4.56 more than second-most expensive TNT). And current cable customers still shell out (if begrudgingly) for ESPN-loaded bundles — according to a ComScore survey, more than 50 percent said sports were important to their TV viewing habits.

One development that might shift Disney’s course, Iger suggested, is “more erosion” in the satellite and TV bundles, such as Verizon’s recent packaging of “skinny bundles.” Another could be higher sports programming costs — expensive agreements with the NFL, NBA, and others have increasingly begun to impact ESPN’s bottom line. Despite those potential developments, though, the company is committed to the traditional pay TV paradigm for the time being. Chief Financial Officer James A. Rasulo told investors in February that even without a la carte components, Disney is “confident in [its] ability to grow ESPN” and other networks “in the long term.”

ESPN Chairs

The decision to prolong unbundling is one Disney makes at its peril — HBO’s new standalone app, HBO Now, continually tops iTunes’ charts, and cord-cutters are climbing the walls at the chance for live sports outside of the bounds of cable. But Iger, to be sure, isn’t ruling anything out. “We […] view technology as a friend, not a foe,” he told CNBC. In addition to ESPN, he said, “Disney [Channel] is [a] brand and product that could be sold directly to the customer.”

Iger said discussion of such a service’s cost “would be conjecture at this point.” Given the amount of administrative and contractual overhead involved in ESPN’s many pots, though, it wouldn’t be cheap. Industry analyst Michael Nathanson projects that in order for the network to maintain its current profit margin, Disney would have to charge at least $36.30 for an a la carte ESPN bundle. By comparison, HBO Now starts at $15 a month.

That pricey prediciton makes Dish’s Internet TV service, Sling TV— which carries ESPN, AMC, and a host of other cable channels for just $20/month — an increasingly attractive proposition.

More people are using Comcast for internet than TV for the first time ever

0

Comcast CEO Brian Roberts speaks at his keynote address at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada January 8, 2008. REUTERS/Rick Wilking

It’s the classic story of the little side business that could, but in this case, the little side business is Comcast’s Internet service, and when we say “could,” we mean bring in millions of customers and billions of dollars in revenue for Comcast. While the telecommunications giant may have begun as a cable provider, its main business is now Internet service provision, boasting 22.5 million Internet subscribers and 22.3 million video customers, as per its second quarter results.

Comcast’s revenue grew 10 percent thanks in large part to an increase of 180,000 high-speed Internet customers, which offset slight losses in their video-based customer base. But for Comcast cast the video results in the best light possible, stating that their net loss in viewers “declined to 69,000, a 52 percent improvement from the second quarter of 2014, and the best second quarter result in nine years.”

In a press release, Brian L. Roberts, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Comcast Corporation, noted, “Our second quarter results, including 11.3 percent revenue growth and 8.0 percent operating cash flow growth, demonstrate the strength and momentum we are seeing across our businesses. In Cable, high-speed Internet, and business services continued to perform extremely well, and, significantly, this was the best second quarter video customer results we’ve had in nine years.”

Despite the continuing and seemingly inevitable loss of video customers to streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and HBOGo, Comcast has managed to weather the storm not only by way of its Internet service provision, but also thanks to the enormous success of its NBCUniversal division. “NBCUniversal had an exceptional quarter, led by the record-breaking box office performances of Jurassic World and Furious 7 and continued strong momentum in our theme parks,” said Roberts. “In addition, NBC won the 2014-2015 broadcast season for adults 18-49. Our teams are executing incredibly well across our strong and diversified portfolio, and I am excited for what we can deliver in the rest of 2015 and beyond.”

The winner of ABC's 'The Bachelorette' sent a Snapchat to friends before the season started that basically predicted the future

kaitlyn bristowe bachelorette crying sad copy22Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Before he ever met his fiance Kaitlyn Bristowe,  Shawn Booth had a hunch he would marry her and there's a Snapchat to prove it.

Booth, a personal trainer who just won the fiery Canadian's heart, saw Bristowe on TV when she was a contestant on "The Bachelor" last season.

Bristowe, 29, competed for the heart of farmer Chris Soules, but she placed third on ABC's hit show. Booth says he watched the episode when the tearful Bristowe got booted. He lifted up his phone, took a photo of Bristowe and drew a heart around her face.

"Don't worry Kaitlyn ... I'm coming for you," he wrote. Then he sent the image to his friends on Snapchat.

A few months later, Booth was selected to be one of 25 men who would compete for Bristowe's heart on "The Bachelorette." On Monday night's season finale, Booth proposed and Bristowe said yes.

Booth described the foretelling snap on ABC's "After the Final Rose" episode.

"I didn't know if I was going to get on the show yet; I didn't know if she was going to be the bachelorette yet," Booth told ABC's "Bachelorette" host Chris Harrison. "When I saw her not get a rose from Chris I was looking at her and she was so upset, there was something inside that just felt crazy, so I took a picture ... I sent that to my buddies and they probably thought I was crazy and fast-forward a few months ... It's incredible."

Here's the Snapchat he sent, which was somehow obtained by ABC.

(Snapchat doesn't save messages on its servers —  every photo message sent on the app disappears after a few seconds. A Snapchat spokesperson believes one of Booth's friends either screenshotted the message when it was received, or that Booth saved it to his phone before he sent out the snap. It's also possible ABC replicated the photo with Booth's direction).

ABC's 'Bachelorette' just made a surprising husband pick in the season finale that had every fan's jaw on the floor

Kaitlyn Bristowe Britt Nilsson bachelorette abcWarning! Spoilers ahead.

The season finale of ABC's "The Bachelorette" aired Monday night, and it was nothing short of jaw-dropping for the millions of fans who tuned in to watch.

Bristowe, a 29-year-old spunky brunette from Canada, had her pick of 25 men. She whittled down the pack to two suitors, Shawn Booth and Nick Viall, for the Monday night finale. Both men met her family during the episode, and both men walked away with engagement rings picked out.

Viall was presented as the sure winner. He and Bristowe were intimate early on in the season while there were still half a dozen men remaining. Her family loved him. And Bristowe commented multiple times that she loved him too.

But when he stepped out of the limo and embarked on a giddy, minutes-long proposal speech, Bristowe listened intently — then delivered a shocking blow.

"You look really beautiful," Viall began while Bristowe held a smile.

"I woke up today just thinking about this whole process," he continued. "We started talking and had no expectations and how quickly things turned into something more. Every moment I've spent with you since I've been here has been better than expected."

bachelorette finaleWith Bristowe still beaming up at him, he continued. "I don't want to let us go, because I am in love with you and I look at you and I have so much confidence in you and in us and I am yours forever if you'll have me. Kaitlyn ..."

That's when Bristowe finally stopped him from getting down on one knee.

"Oh god," she muttered twice. Then after a long five-second pause, she explained her "heart was with someone else."

If getting dumped on television in front of millions of viewers isn't bad enough, Viall has now put himself in that same position twice. He was the runner-up on last year's season of "The Bachelorette" too, and he returned this year to pursue Bristowe because he felt sure this time that there was a serious spark.

But that spark apparently wasn't as strong as the one Bristowe felt for Booth.

During his exit interview, Viall said he felt like the world's "biggest joke."

Fans weren't thrilled with the way Bristowe seemed to lead Viall on, and they blew up at her on Twitter. But they piped down when Booth made his entrance.

"From the moment that I saw you when I stepped outside that limo that first night I knew my life would never be the same," Booth told Bristowe. "When I went to introduce myself and you grabbed my hands I felt something I'd never felt before. I felt like I was exactly where I needed to be."

This time, Bristowe responded with some romantic lines of her own.

"Shawn, the moment you stepped out of the limo I felt something for you that I can't describe and I don't think I've ever felt before," the bachelorette said.

"The truth is you light me up and you make me laugh and most importantly you allow me to be myself. And I know this has not been easy on you. Definitely we have had ups and downs and I've made some mistakes. A lot of mistakes," she said, alluding to her intimate moment with Viall earlier in the season.

bachelorette finale Nick Viall Kaitlyn Bristowe"And I have be honest with you and tell you the truth. And the truth is that I never want you to question what we have ever again because I am completely yours and I will always be faithful to you and I've been waiting so long to tell you how I feel because I love you with all of my heart like I've never loved anybody before. And I can't wait to make a lifetime of memories with you and only you because you are the one and always will be."

Booth then proposed to Bristowe, and she said yes.

It has been a few weeks since the final episode was filmed, and the pair appeared happy and in love on ABC's "After The Final Rose" episode Monday night.

How to watch tonight's meteor shower created by a very mysterious comet

delta aquarid

There's a very strange comet flying through our solar neighborhood that unlike any other comet astronomers have seen.

This had led some to speculate that this comet is not from around here — instead, it came to us from a completely different solar system, far way.

This mysterious, and potentially alien comet, is called Comet 69P/Machholz, and it's the most-likelysource for the annual meteor shower happening this week.

Meteor showers typically come from the dusty, rocky guts that comets leave behind as they fly through the solar system. When Earth passes through a comet's tail, its gravitational pull attracts their debris, which then enters the atmosphere, burns up, and is seen as a falling star, or meteor.

This week's show of falling stars is called the Delta Aquarid meteor shower.

The shower takes place from July 12 through August 23, but the best time to catch a glimpse — when the most meteors are streaking across the sky — will be early Wednesday morning, after moon-set and before sunrise centered around 2 a.m. (for all time zones), according to EarthSky.

The Delta Aquarid meteor shower is not as spectacular as next month's Perseid meteor shower, and the full moon will make it hard to spot the meteors. Therefore, you'll want to wait until the moon has set (calculate that here) and then get to a place with dark skies, far from city lights.

At peak viewing time you should see between 10 to 20 meteors an hour.

To glimpse the meteors all you have to do is lie on your back and keep your eyes peeled in the direction of the constellation Aquarius — each meteor shower is named for the constellation where the meteors seem to appear from, hence the name "Delta Aquarid." You can determine where Aquarius will be in your night sky at 2 a.m. with an astronomy app like Stellarium.

But don't worry if you can't get out of the city or aren't willing to stay up until 2 a.m., you can still watch the meteor shower live. Slooh, an online observatory, will be broadcasting the meteor shower live starting on Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET.

During the two-hour broadcast, host Will Gater and Slooh astronomer Bob Berman will discuss what we can learn from meteor showers and take questions from the public. Just send then a tweet with #SloohDeltaAquarids followed by your question. See the broadcast stream below.

Origins of Comet 67P/Machholz

comet 67P/MachholzWhile Comet 67P/Machholz is one of the main comets thought to generate the Delta Aquarid meteor shower, that point is still debatable.

What is known is how strange this comet is compared to most other comets in our solar system. And its bizarre qualities are what have led scientists to think this comet was somehow flung far from its home somewhere in interstellar space only to later be caught up in our sun's gravity.

"First its orbit is about as unround as possible. This alone suggests a capture-origin, but doesn't prove it," Berman told Business Insider in an email. "But stranger still is its composition, measured spectroscopically during its close 2007 visit. This shows an almost total lack of carbon and cyanogen, very un-cometlike."

Comet 67P/Machholz also travels extremely close to the sun during its orbital path. In fact, it gets even closer than the inner-most planet Mercury.

For this reason, Berman says that this comet's odd chemical composition might be from "its repeated closer approaches to the sun [which] could have broiled away its carbon."

tom cruise tonight show

We know Tom Cruise can cut across a dance floor, and we know he prefers to do the majority of his own movie stunts. Add lip-synch champ to his résumé.

While promoting his upcoming movie, "Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation," in theaters Friday, Cruise stopped by "The Tonight Show" to face off against host Jimmy Fallon in two intense rounds of lip-synching.

Fallon was no match for the "Mission Impossible" star, especially when Cruise busted out this move while grooving to The Weekend's "Can't Feel My Face":

And then there was this move that drove the crowd wild:

Remember, Cruise is 53.

Fallon knew he was done for by the end of Cruise's second performance, so like any good sport, he invited the actor to join him in lip-synching his final song, "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" while serenading an engaged audience member.

Tom Cruise held his breath for 6 minutes in this crazy underwater stunt in the new 'Mission: Impossible'

tom cruise mission impossible swim final

Since Tom Cruise started the "Mission: Impossible" movie franchise 19 years ago, his reputation as an actor who wants to do his own stunts has become legendary. Each new film for "M:I" seems to bring new spectacular stunts, with Cruise himself doing the heavy lifting.

You probably thought Cruise couldn’t top climbing the tallest building in the world in "Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol" in 2011, but you’d be wrong.

mission impossible ghost protocol"Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation" doesn't hit theaters until Friday, but you've probably already caught a glimpse of Cruise's latest stunt in which he hangs on the side of a massive airplane as it takes off.

mission impossible plane 4And yes, that’s really the actor — not a stunt double.

But according to the film’s stunt coordinator, Wade Eastwood, that wasn’t the stunt he was most concerned about Cruise taking on himself.

At a key moment in the movie, Cruise, playing IMF agent Ethan Hunt, has to dive into an underwater safe to retrieve the computer chip that will lead him closer to the film’s villain. Along with having to hold his breath the whole time, he must keep away from a large crane that’s circling around the safe.

The stunt first required Cruise to jump off a 120-foot ledge (the bottom was all CGI, but he really did the jump).

tom cruise mi waterThen, in an underwater set that was filled 20 feet high with water, Cruise had to hold his breath as he acted out the scene.

tom cruise mi water 2“It’s all Tom,” Eastwood told Business Insider. “There’s no time you don’t see Ethan in the film and it’s not Tom.”

Eastwood (no relation to Clint) had worked previously with Cruise on “Edge of Tomorrow,” so he was aware of Cruise’s obsession with authenticity when it comes to stunt work. But he still marvels over Cruise’s physical ability.

“It’s been said in other interviews, if he wasn’t an actor he would have been a great stunt man,” said Eastwood. “The difference between Tom and a stunt man is he acts the character after hearing ‘action.’ A stunt person just does the stunt to double the character.”

And that is the aspect that made Eastwood’s job to pull off the underwater scene the most challenging.

Though they had cameras all over the set monitoring the star as he was underwater, and stunt crews at the ready to jump into action if anything went wrong, Eastwood said Cruise still had to act in the scene. This meant it needed to look like he was losing breath and becoming unconscious.

Tom Cruise Mission Impossible David James“On two or three occasions I brought him up because I felt he was down for too long,” said Eastwood. “He was like, ‘What are you doing? I was right in the moment. I’m acting.’ And I was like, ‘I know, it was just too real for me and I wasn’t comfortable.’”

Eastwood said the longest Cruise was underwater for a take was over six minutes.

Eastwood recalls Cruise telling him one time after having the actor come up for air, “I got plenty of breath, trust me. I don’t want to die.”

The scene took two weeks to shoot, according to Eastwood. But training for it started two months before production began.

To prepare Cruise for an underwater scene in which he’d be holding his breath for over six minutes, Eastwood brought in a freediving record holder to teach the actor breathing exercises. Basically, as Eastwood explains, teaching your mind “that you don’t have to take a breath.”

Eastwood said Cruise blacked out a few times during the training.

“That’s how you learn your limits,” Eastwood said.

That was another concern of Eastwood’s — what if Cruise got too into character?

“It’s a very calming and surreal state being underwater, especially when you’re holding your breath for that long,” he said. “You’ve gone through training to let your mind to that place where you can control it. It’s dangerous because you get carried away in the acting and you get in such a euphoric and relaxed state being in character that you forget what you’re doing. That was my worry.”

Thankfully, Cruise kept his head together and pulled off a scene that’s agonizingly claustrophobic yet remarkable to watch.

And that’s after seeing him hang from a moving plane.

Conan O'Brien is being sued for allegedly stealing jokes from Twitter

Conan monologue

A San Diego man has filed a lawsuit against Conan O'Brien, TBS and others on the comedian's team for allegedly violating copyright on four jokes.

According to a complaint filed on July 22 in California federal court by Robert Kaseberg, the jokes were posted on a personal blog and on Twitter before making it into O'Brien's late night show monologue.

Kaseberg says he published the first joke in January 14, writing, "A Delta flight this week took off from Cleveland to New York with just two passengers. And they fought over control of the armrest the entire flight."

That same day, O'Brien made a similar joke on his show.

conan monologue

One of the other jokes dealt with Tom Brady and the other with Caitlyn Jenner. The fourth joke was about the Washington Monument.

"The Washington Monument is ten inches shorter than previously thought," Kaseberg tweeted. "You know the winter has been cold when a monument suffers from shrinkage."

This allegedly formed the basis for Conan's own joke.

"We at Conaco firmly believe there is no merit to this lawsuit," responds the production company behind the Conan television show.

The new lawsuit comes amid some focus on joke theft on Twitter. This past week, a few jokes published on the media service were removed, apparently at the request of a freelance writer. This led to numerous articles that Twitter was taking joke theft seriously, though it's probably nothing more than an individual submitting a simple form pursuant to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Internet service providers only give light scrutiny towards takedown requests. By expeditiously removing material that's claimed to be a violation of copyright, services like Twitter gain an affirmative defense against copyright liability. Users who have material removed then have the opportunity of submitting a counter-notice, which typically results in restoration and provides notice to the rights holder of whom to sue if there's still a dispute.

Tweets stolen for broadcast television obviously invoke a very different legal process. Kaseberg is demanding hundreds of thousands of dollars in actual and statutory damages. Here's the full complaint.

5 things 'BattleBots' producers are planning if the show gets another season

abc battlebots champions bite force

"BattleBots" just aired its thrilling, flame thrower-filled, metal shrapnel-rich finale on Sunday and pronounced Bite Force its champion, but that doesn't mean the competition show is finished  not by a mile.

The show did pretty well for ABC. It averaged 4.6 million viewers and saw increases in both viewers and the advertiser-coveted 18 to 49-year-old demographic over the past two weeks.

"We don't know about Season 2 and I don't want to jinx it," "BattleBots" co-founder and executive producer Greg Munson told Business Insider of the chances for renewal. "But, if you look at the Magic 8-Ball, it would say, 'All signs point to yes.'"

"BattleBots" producers are definitely looking forward and feeling confident that ABC will renew the series for a second season (seventh if you count the five seasons it ran on Comedy Central from 2000 to 2002). And they've definitely given some thought as to what they'd like to do similarly and what they'd like to change up.

Here's four things the producers have planned for a likely second season of "BattleBots":

abc battlebots mini rumble1.) Continue to emphasize the competition as a sport.
"We invested in the tournament as a trackable sports event," executive producer and head of unscripted for Whalerock Industries, Chris Cowan, told BI. "I don’t want to be too self-aggrandizing although we do believe that it is legitimately a sport. This is not to challenge all the traditional sports that are out there. we just believe it’s a fantastic outlet for people who can get into real competition with these things."

Next season, the series would continue its emphasis on the "March Madness-like" bracket, how it's set up, and the back story behind the teams and their robots.

"We want it so you can guess who’s going to win the matches," Cowan explained. "It’s more digestible to a broader audience, because we’re framing it in a way they understand.

abc battlebots story 1a2.) Improve on the technical coverage.
While the producers wanted to focus on builders and backgrounds, they found that the technical side of the competition wasn't getting as much time to shine.

"A little more tech," Munson emphasized. "I think the sport side of it is great. We've seen the pit and how the builders are working on them between rounds. I just want to see a little more of that. That's something we can tweak for Season 2."

abc battlebots MISSION DESTRUCTION AND COMPLETE CONTROL3.) Hold the competition as an open-invitation tournament.
Due to time constraints, Season 1 had to be an invitation-only tournament in order to
guarantee that everybody who competed was a builder of a high enough caliber for the tournament. But with Season 2, that could open up.

"Our dream for this is that it be an open invitation tournament," Cowan said. "I’m hoping that what this show is doing is lighting the fuse of the imagination who want to now tear their lawnmowers apart and start building."

Producers hope to have more competitors, more episodes, more matches,

abc battlebots story 14.) Foster the evolution of bots through its rules.
In many ways, an open ournament helps here. But, the producers encourage competitors to find loopholes in the rules.

"With any established competition — it doesn’t matter if it’s a game show or a hundred-year-old sport — it’s almost tradition that the competitors will look for ways to evolve their interpretation of the rules," he said. "You’re never going to be able to stop that. We actually encourage it as long as it’s done in good sportsmanship."

"We have a small competition committee looking at the rules and trying to tweak them, so we encourage innovation in design," Munson said.

abc battlebots BITE FORCE VS. WARHEAD5.) Encourage evolution through changes to the arena.
"It’s an entertainment program and we want the most exciting fights we can possibly put on television with the most badass, interesting and creative-looking robots and best builders," Munson explained. "So, we also have to look at the arena itself and find ways to tweak it to push these builders to evolve their machines."
