Here's what the late-night hosts had to say about Donald Trump's presidential-run announcement

It was clear to anyone who watched Donald Trump's presidential-campaign announcement on Tuesday that the roughly 45-minute speech would become fodder for late-night TV.

Many of the hosts had a lot of fun with the many subjects Trump covered in his speech.

Jimmy Kimmel can already see Trump's winning slogan:

On ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," the host described Trump as "a president and an amusement park all rolled into one."

He could already see that Trump ended his speech having conveyed a winning message: "The American dream is dead."

"It's not exactly hope and change, but it's a slogan, a catchy slogan," Kimmel said as a bumper sticker with the phrase appeared on-screen.

Jimmy Fallon needs a translator:

On NBC's "Tonight Show," Fallon summed up Trump's speech with a comparison: "Hillary would be our first female president, and Trump would be our first 'Mad Libs' president." He didn't spend a lot of time on Trump, as it may have been disrespectful to the night's big guest, Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush.

Other late-night hosts, though, felt as if Trump's speech called for some high-production skits.

James Corden was stumped:

CBS' "The Late Late Show With James Corden" featured a game called "Trump Stumpers." The contestants had to guess whether a phrase was actually said by Trump during his speech. It wasn't too hard a game, because — spoiler alert! — every phrase was in Trump's speech.

Jon Stewart is letting Trump write his last jokes:

Stewart was especially pleased about Trump's speech, which the "Daily Show" host characterized as "over half an hour of the most beautifully ridiculous jibber-jabber." For the soon-to-be-departing host, it was an embarrassment of riches.

"Thank you. Thank you, Donald Trump, for making my last six weeks my best six weeks," Stewart said. "He is putting me in some kind of comedy hospice where I'm getting just straight morphine."

Stephen Colbert couldn't remain silent:

Even Colbert, who won't be taking the reins of CBS' "Late Show" until September 8, couldn't let this opportunity pass him by. With his best Trump hair, he did a great imitation of the real-estate mogul's speech.

HBO is reportedly going after Bill Simmons

0

Bill Simmons Sports Influence ListHBO is making a serious run at Bill Simmons, according to the Hollywood Reporter's Lacey Rose.

There's been plenty of speculation about where Bill Simmons will land after his much publicized split with ESPN in May. Rose reports that Simmons has several suitors, but notes that having his own TV show is appealing to Simmons.

From the Hollywood Reporter:

Considerably more likely is Simmons, whom the network is said to have made a big play for after his unceremonious booting from the more corporate ESPN. Such a move would be straight out of the HBO playbook, which famously provided a creative reprieve for former ABC flameout Bill Maher many years earlier. Though Simmons is said to have several suitors, insiders say conversations at HBO have focused on a TV show — something Simmons is believed to want — along with heavy digital extensions that make the prolific personality tailor-made for the HBO Now era.

Though many believe Simmons' site, Grantland, didn't make enough money to justify his $5 million salary, he was the owner of the most popular podcast in sports and one of the original producers of the popular "30 for 30" documentary series.

HBO has found success in documentaries and docuseries in recent years, as Rose notes, and has become the home for talk shows for John Oliver and Bill Maher. Simmons dabbled in TV with ESPN and this past year introduced "The Grantland Basketball Hour," which struggled to draw viewers.

Earlier in June, Gawker reported a rumor that Simmons was looking to start an online subscription network with Jon Stewart, who Rose reports is also being sought after by HBO.

Though it's unclear how Simmons would incorporate writing into any of these ventures, he's had some success on other media platforms, and it seems his next destination will involve TV .

Food Network star Ina Garten on the power of saying 'no'

Ina Garten and Moira Forbes

"No" is a complete sentence, but it can take many people decades to learn how to say it.

Last week at the Forbes Women's Summit in New York, Ina Garten, the best-selling cookbook author and host of the Food Network's "Barefoot Contessa," stressed the importance of being selective in the opportunities you pursue.

"When you're young, you say 'yes' to everything," said Garten. "At some point, you start making choices."

When Garten was building her specialty food business, she said she accepted every opportunity that came her way because she wasn't sure what would be most interesting or successful.

Once she got to know herself and the business better, she started to be more strategic.

Now, "I'm getting a reputation for saying 'no' to everything," she joked.

She said she's gotten to a place where she can say, "OK, my brand is about fun and community, and dog food doesn't fit into that right now."

Being decisive about what to turn down frees her up to spend time on the projects she values most.

How do you say "no" without damaging the relationshipBrian de Haaff, cofounder and CEO of Aha! Labs Inc, recommends you:

  • Define your vision, so you can quickly decide which requests distract from it and which reinforce it.
  • Make sure you understand the request, which signals that you value the other person and their time.
  • Respond quickly, so that you don't leave the requester in limbo for long.
  • And explain why, which helps the requester understand where you're coming from.

Eighties singer Phil Collins just dropped $33 million on a Mediterranean-style mansion once owned by Jennifer Lopez.

The previous owner, healthcare entrepreneur Mark Gainor, bought the home from Lopez in 2005 for $13.9 million.

Gainor first listed the property in 2010 for $29 million. Two years later, after he'd given it an $11 million facelift, Gainor relisted the home for $40 million.

Meredith Galante contributed to an earlier version of this post.

Built in 1929, the house sits on over an acre of land with 200 feet of waterfront on Biscayne Bay.

Go outside and see the Miami skyline from your 60-foot long swimming pool, outdoor kitchen, or boat dock.

The master bedroom has an office, terrace, gym, and 1,000-square-foot closet.

14 'Jurassic Park' references made in 'Jurassic World'

Jurassic World

Warning: This article contains some major spoilers for "Jurassic World."

Despite being the fourth movie in the "Jurassic Park" franchise, "Jurassic World" is considered to be a direct sequel to 1993's "Jurassic Park."

It's a faithful sequel filled with references to the original. Some are obvious, and some you'll have to think twice about.

Here are all of the "Jurassic Park" references we spotted while seeing the film:

1. Mr. DNA hasn't gone anywhere.

Jurassic Park Mr DNAThis helpful cartoon was first featured in a movie that John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) showed guests as a fun way to inform them about the crazy genetic experiments happening at Jurassic Park. He can be seen once again at the entrance of Jurassic World.

2. Claire's outfit echoes the past

jurassic world chris pratt jessica chastainA lot has been said about how ridiculous it is to watch Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) run away from dinosaurs while wearing high heels.

However, her actual outfit in general could be a throwback.

Bustle points out she wears an all white outfit just like John Hammond before her.

Then, at one point in the movie, she dramatically pauses to tie her shirt in a knot. On The /Filmcast, Joanna Robinson points out that the other great "Jurassic Park" heroine, Laura Dern did the same thing in the first movie:

3. The T. rex once again feasts on a goat

In "Jurassic Park," you get a lot of hints at the T. rex's fury before she can actually be seen in full view. One of them is a goat attached to a rope that eventually disappears.

Jurassic Park Night VisionEarly in "Jurassic World," the boys visit the T. rex, and a live goat is seen once again, only to be devoured seconds later. But don't worry, that isn't our only view of the beast.

4. Baby Triceratops finally makes an appearance

Jurassic World Baby TriceratopsAccording to a making of feature, Spielberg originally wanted to include a baby Triceratops in "Jurassic Park." Despite the fact that this scene was cut, they still made an animatronic reconstruction of it.

To make up for this absence, we get an entire baby Triceratops petting zoo in "Jurassic World."

5. The Dilophosaurus returns in less-deadly hologram form

Dilophosaurus GIFThe lizard-like Dilophosaurus famously ended Dennis Nedry's (Wayne Knight) plans in "Jurassic Park."

Fans of the first will notice the small, yet terrifying dinosaur can be seen in hologram form in "Jurassic World" near the end of the film.

6. John Hammond statue

Jurassic Park Richard Attenborough

In "Jurassic Park," billionaire John Hammond's dream of a dinosaur theme park is crushed, and he is absolutely devastated.

In "Jurassic World," his dream comes to life. And while he isn't around to see it (actor Richard Attenborough passed away in 2014), a statue of him stands tall in Hammond Hall.

7. Mosquito in amber

Jurassic World MosquitoAs it's revealed in "Jurassic Park," dinosaurs are created through DNA extraction from ancient mosquitoes trapped in amber.

The mosquitoes make many cameos in "Jurassic World," including giant statues all around the park.

8. Jake Johnson's got a "Jurassic Park" T-shirt

Jake Johnson Jurassic WorldIn one of the film's many meta moments, Lowery (Jake Johnson) wears a Jurassic Park T-shirt from the original park souvenir shop which he paid a big price for on eBay.

9. Jeff Goldblum's character Ian Malcolm wrote a book

chris pratt jake johnson bookUnfortunately, chaos theorist Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) couldn't return for a "Jurassic World" cameo. However, his impact in this movie universe can still be felt.

At one point, a copy of his book, "God Creates Dinosaurs," can be seen on Jurassic Park nerd Lowery's desk.

10. The return of Dr. Henry Wu

BD Wong Jurassic ParkB.D. Wong is the only original cast member to return for "Jurassic World."

BD Wong Chuck Zlotnick Universal.JPGWu is the scientist responsible for much of the dinosaurs that are seen in the park, including Indominus Rex. In "Jurassic World," it comes to light that he may just be the franchise's biggest villain.

11. Tim Murphy's night vision goggles

Jurassic Park Night Vision GogglesWhile running from the Indominus Rex, Claire's nephews Gray (Ty Simpkins) and Zach (Nick Robinson) discover the ruins of the original Jurassic Park hidden deep in the woods of Isla Nublar.

Inside an old shed, Gray picks up a pair of night vision goggles, most likely the same ones worn by Tim (Joseph Mazzello) during the T. rex's night attack.

12. The original "Jurassic Park" Jeep

Jurassic ParkAlso found in the shed are two Jeeps from the original park. They look withered both by time and the T. rex attacks.

Jurassic Park T rex jeep attack GIFThe Jeep Gray and Zach end up taking is marked 29, the same one driven by John Hammond near the start of "Jurassic Park"

13. "When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth" banner

T Rex, Ending, Jurassic ParkAnother item found from the original park is a tattered banner with "When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth" written across it. This banner could be seen in one of the last shots of "Jurassic Park," after the T. rex defeats the Velociraptors, re-establishes her dominance in the animal kingdom, and inadvertently becomes the hero of the film.

14. The reappearance of the T. rex

Jurassic World Bryce Dallas HowardThe original T. rex makes a very brief appearance at the beginning of "Jurassic World," but it is not the last time we see her.

Just when it seems like the Indominus Rex will make a meal out of everybody left at the park, Claire demands Lowery open up a certain gate. She walks up with a flare, just like Ian Malcolm before her, and signals that yes, the T. rex is back, giving fans something to cheer about.

'Inside Out' will be the first Pixar movie ever to not open No.1 at the box office

inside out

Though Pixar’s latest animated feature “Inside Out” has drawn critical acclaim and is on track to be a hit at the box office, it will likely not join the other titles from the studio in one category.

Looking at projections for this weekend’s box office take, The Wrap believes that “Inside Out” will be the first Pixar movie not to debut at No.1.

The main reason is because “Jurassic World” is going to take a huge bite out of the box office again, with it expected to gross around $100 million in its second weekend, analysts tell The Wrap.

“Inside Out” is projected to gross around $60 million in first-weekend sales, according to Bloomberg. Pixar titles that had a similar opening weekend take include “Cars,” “Brave” and “WALL-E.” All of them went on to gross over $450 million worldwide.

“Inside Out” is set in the mind of a young girl named Riley, whose emotions — Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), and Sadness (Phyllis Smith) — conflict in how to manage her move to San Francisco.

Though it might not take the top spot, “Inside Out” has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, leading Dave Hollis, distribution chief at Disney, to tell The Wrap he’s “pretty sure that by the end of the summer, this one will be among the top [grossing] films.”

The 14 preceding Pixar films have taken in $8.5 billion and grossed more than $600 million globally.

“Jurassic World” is coming off a historic opening weekend where it took in over $200 million, making it the highest-grossing debut weekend of all time.

Why Nick Denton is confident Gawker will win its $100 million lawsuit over Hulk Hogan's sex tape

0

154169459

Gawker Media CEO Nick Denton is gearing up for a big fight that could cost his company $100 million. A court filing provides some insight into how Gawker will fight it and why Denton believes the company has only a one-in-ten chance of losing.

It started when Gawker posted an article with a video excerpt of a sex tape starring Hogan and Heather Clem, the ex-wife of Hogan's friend, Bubba the Love Sponge, in 2012. A disgruntled employee of Hogan's friend is rumored to have leaked the tape.

The professional wrestler is suing Gawker for invasion of privacy. The trial starts next month.

A possible loss for Denton's company could mean that he would need to seek outside funding for the sake of Gawker's survival, as they don't keep $100 million in the bank. Since its founding in 2003, the company has mostly refused VC funding, and insiders own 90% of its shares.

“We never raised money because we fund growth from cash flow,” Denton once wrote in an email.“And the journalistic pursuit of the truth is not compatible with outside investment."

But Denton is confident Gawker won't have to pay a penny. As he told the Daily Beast, "The way I look at it, it’s a five in ten chance that we come through this stronger, and four in ten it’s a wash. Only one in ten bad."

According to a court filing obtained by Business Insider, here's how Denton plans to fight the charges:

1. The story was newsworthy.

Former editor-in-chief A.J. Daulerio testified that the video is a subject of ongoing public controversy. The video was taken at the time when both Clem and Hogan were married, but Hogan had previously denied the infidelity. In 2011 on the Howard Stern Show, Hogan replied "no" and cited "man law, brother" when asked if Clem's divorce from Bubba had been due to cheating.

Nick Denton

2. Hogan is a public figure.

Hogan published an autobiography called "My Life Outside The Ring" so that he could "open up about everything in his life." He and his entire family were in a reality TV show called "Hogan Knows Best," where he gave producers a set of keys so they could creep into the house and film his sleeping family. He wrote, "I didn't care if my butt was hanging out or if I had drool on my pillow."

3. Hogan hasn't exactly been tight-lipped when it comes to his love life.

Hogan has engaged in continuous sexual banter on programs like "Bubba the Love Sponge Show." He's disclosed explicit details about his and wife Linda's sexual activities on Bubba's radio program, providing the specifics on how he and Linda were playing "stick shift" in the car the day before.

4. The media had already discussed his sex life long before the tape.

As early as seven months before the release, the VH1 Access website released an article called "Report: A Hulk Hogan Sex Tape Is Out There". The Huffington Post, E-Online, The Daily Caller, TWNPnews.com and many others also published similar articles.

You can read the full court filing below.

Why Judd Apatow returned to stand-up after a two decade hiatus

0

Judd Apatow

If you ever get to see a show at New York's famed Comedy Cellar, you might be treated to a surprise drop-in.

Louis C.K., Chris Rock, and Aziz Ansari are known to stop by unannounced and work on new material in front of a crowd.

Last summer, while attending a show at the Comedy Cellar, I was both shocked and delighted when Judd Apatow, who was introduced as the producer of "Anchorman," graced the stage of the packed basement comedy club.

Apatow is one of the most powerful people working in comedy today. However, he is best known as a writer, director, and producer rather than a stand-up. However, Apatow first started his comedy career in stand-up and after a two decade break, he recently decided to pick up a mic once again.

With such a successful film and television career, there was no reason for him to return to the tough, competitive world of stand-up comedy. However, Apatow explained in a conversation with Ira Glass at 92nd Street Y while promoting his new book "Sick in the Head," the stress of making movies made him want to return to the instant gratification of stand-up.

"There are moments when you get tired from the stress of it, because making a movie is stressful. You're working on it for two or three years and then in one day the world says either I love it or I hate it. And then it's over after that day. And that's why I've been doing stand-up comedy." Apatow told the crowd Tuesday evening.

92Y_061615_078While Apatow has had a lot of critical and box office success, especially with "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and "Knocked Up," he has also received mixed reception for personal projects such as "Funny People" and "This Is 40." Cult classic TV shows "Freaks and Geeks" and "Undeclared" both couldn't make it past one season.

For him, stand-up is a more immediate way to determine whether or not his jokes are funny.

"You do a show, it's kind of pleasant. If no one likes it, you do another one the next day and you get to talk to people directly and you don't have that two years of pent up terror." Apatow said.

This Is 40Apatow first started doing stand-up when he was 17, and called it quits at 24. During the 90-minute event, Apatow explained a big part behind his decision to return to the trade. He believes that at that young age, he didn't have the experience, point of view, or anger needed to be great at stand-up. He now feels he has gained a lot of that during these past two decades.

"I wasn't like Steven Wright or Emo Phillips...I wasn't gonna reinvent what comedy is. And that's one of the reasons why I stopped because I felt like I was stronger in writing and other things I was doing." Apatow told the audience. "But since I started again I...I am annoyed with things and I have stories and I have positions. So it's really fun because it's like being put in a forced coma for a while and then waking up and you have more tools to do something."

trainwreck amy schumer bill haderThis doesn't mean Apatow is done writing, directing, and producing movies. Based on early rave reviews, his latest film "Trainwreck" looks like it was worth all of the stress.

"I like to think that my entire directing career was just a way for me to get better spots at The Comedy Cellar." Apatow joked.

Based on the jokes I saw last summer, which were a hilarious mix of observational and personal, it looks like Apatow could have a real future in comedy.

Apatow's new book, "Sick in the Head," is now available for purchase. "Trainwreck" will be out in theaters on July 17.

Here's why Hulu dropped the 'Plus' from its subscription service's name

hulu dropping plus email main

The name "Hulu Plus" is no longer, but why?

Members of the streaming video service were alerted to the change via an email this week with the subject: "Just call us Hulu! (Not Hulu Plus)."

Here's the one I received:

hulu dropping plus email

Hulu actually first announced the name change during its upfront presentation to advertisers in April, but that's a select audience and the change became official this week.

But before we go into the company's reasons for the name change, let's revisit the birth of Hulu Plus.

Previously supported by just advertising, Hulu Plus was born out of a desire to offer a paid subscription service and generate new revenue. Although Hulu Plus still included commercials, members had access to a larger amount of the service's library.

So, why would Hulu decide to drop the "Plus"?

While a Hulu representative declined to comment for this article, a staffer with knowledge of the decision spoke to Business Insider on the condition of anonymity.

mindy project goes to huluThat individual said the decision was certainly backed by research and primarily driven to "make marketing more effective." Both the free and paid services will continue, but "this change will help us to focus on one Hulu brand, allowing more growth for the company overall by bringing in a clearer message to consumers."

"When you add a new brand, you have to spend money explaining the difference between the brands," Brand Identity's founder and chief strategy officer, Chad Kawalec, told BI. "I'm sure they figured out that having to continue to educate people on what the 'Plus' meant was more expensive than simply removing it."

Kawalec also said that in the years since Hulu Plus was created, most consumers have realized that there is almost always a way to upgrade to a higher tier service, something Hulu probably also realized.

Hulu"All business models, including the airlines, your cable, the telephone, and in apps have an easy way to get in and then they offer upgrades," Kawalec said. "For Hulu, that means they can present a Hulu base membership and then the higher tier paid subscription."

Hulu's name change could be leading the way. Kawalec believes that Amazon, which needed to market and differentiate its own streaming service, Amazon Prime, from its retail services, will go a similar route to Hulu in the future.

"I have a feeling that they're going to end up in the same position where it's just Amazon," he said. "They've had to spend a lot of money to educate people on what you get with Prime. Have you been on the site? It's constant. All of their energy goes into that instead of talking about the Amazon brand."

Shocking photos of Earth that look exactly like Mars

0
0

If you thought Mars was completely different from Earth, think again.

MarsOur warm, blue planet is more similar in some ways to the desolate Red Planet than you know, and we have comparison images to prove it.

For almost three years, NASA's Curiosity rover has been driving across the Martian surface, exploring a region called Gale Crater, located in the southern hemisphere. And the images it has taken look strikingly similar to some of the most extreme places on Earth, like Death Valley and the Atacama Desert.

Below are five comparisons that show a picture of Mars on top and Earth on the bottom. Jason Major — who blogs about all things space at Lights in the Dark— assembled the panoramic images of Mars below, and you can find more examples on his Flickr page.

1. Flat valleys on Mars look just like the ones along the Badwater basin in the Death Valley National Park.

marscomp1

2. Tall mounds in Ica, Peru— a place so dry that human remains naturally mummify instead of decomposing because of lack of moisture — look disturbingly similar to the ones on Mars, which is equally dry.

marscomp2

3. Rolling, dust-ridden hills on Mars are akin to the hills you can find just outside of the desert town of Wadi Halfa, located in the center of the Sahara desert — the world's third largest desert after Antarctica and the Arctic.

mrascomp4

4. The world's driest non-polar desert, the Atacama Desert in South America, is a great place to test out future Mars rovers because the two environments are so similar. Here you can see one of Curiosity's epic selfies (above) juxtiposed against the European Space Agency's prototype of their 2018 ExoMars mission in the Atacama Desert (below).

marscomp3

5. This incredible shot of a ridge in Gale crater shows that rocks on Mars aren't so different from rocks on Earth, like the ones in Libya shown below. Both generate towering mounds with distinctive parallel slits etched in the surface.

marscomp5These images suggest that the first people to walk on Mars might not feel so alone. After spending months in space on their journey to the Red Planet, they'll land on an alien world that might not feel so alien, after all.

Donald Trump would like you to know that 'Celebrity Apprentice' is 'a very big show'

Real estate mogul, television star, and 2016 presidential candidate Donald Trump takes issue with people who suggest his reality show, "Celebrity Apprentice," doesn't have strong ratings.

After MSNBC host Lawrenece O'Donnell referred to the show's audience as "tiny," Trump's office sent Business Insider an email. It included a note from his executive assistant, Jessica Macchia.

"Mr. Trump would like you to see the attached 'Celebrity Apprentice' ratings, in actuality it is a very big show," Macchia wrote.

"Celebrity Apprentice" airs on NBC. It is the latest iteration of Trump's "Apprentice" franchise, which premiered in 2004.

The message included two attached PDF's. The first was a Variety article from 2004 that noted "The Apprentice" was the number one show among adults aged 18-49 at the time. The second attachment was an email Trump requested from NBC ratings guru Tom Bierbaum earlier this month. Trump asked Bierbaum how his show was performing relative to ABC's"Shark Tank."

Bierbaum noted "Celebrity Apprentice" was behind "Shark Tank" last season. However, Bierbaum also identified "one positive," which is that "Celebrity Apprentice" is very close to "Shark Tank" in the key 18-49 demographic. Bierbaum also said Trump's show has grown its audience while "Shark Tank" remained "flat."

The PDF sent to Business Insider included handwritten annotations from Trump, who argued "Celebrity Apprentice" earned these numbers in spite of being hurt by re-runs.

"Despite adding two re-runs at season's end — hurt ratings," Trump wrote.

"Celebrity Apprentice" averaged 7.6 million viewers, its best numbers since 2012, last season. NBC renewed it for another season in February.

O'Donnell disparaged Trump's ratings on Tuesday evening in a segment that included Business Insider. He made the comments after Republican strategist Steve Schmidt argued Trump's celebrity will ensure he makes an impact on the GOP's 2016 primary.

"On any given night, you know, the greatest reality show on television are going to be these debates. And, in part, it'll be the greatest reality show on television because Donald Trump is there," Schmidt said. "This is someone who's run a successful television show for many, many years now."

"Successful? It has a tiny, tiny audience," O'Donnell said.

The original ‘Star Wars’ trilogy is playing in China for the first time ever

Rejoice, China!

For the first time ever the original “Star Wars” trilogy — “A New Hope,” “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi” — will screen in mainland China.

The films are currently being shown during the Shanghai Film Festival, however, Yahoo Movies reports Disney has no plans of showing the films outside of the festival venue.

“Episode IV: A New Hope” opened in the US in 1977 and though it also played all over the world, it didn’t make it to China as the country was in the wake of their Cultural Revolution, in which Chairman Mao Zedong banned the import of foreign culture

Hollywood films began making its way into the country in 1986, meaning Chinese citizens had the opportunity to see the “Star Wars” prequels — “The Phantom Menace,” “Attack of the Clones,” and “Revenge of the Sith” — during their original theatrical releases in the late 1990s/early 2000s.

The prequels are also screening at the Shanghai Film Festival.

However, it's likely many in China have seen bootlegs of the saga over the decades. The six-DVD box set currently sells around $12 in the Chinese commercial city.

But this is still a clever move by Disney.

As China is the largest film market outside of the US, it’s good to give the country an opportunity to get properly caught up on the complete saga before the latest “Star Wars” chapter, “The Force Awakens,” opens December 18.

‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ started out as ‘Twilight’ fan fiction before becoming an international phenomenon

The author of best-selling erotic romance novel, box-office hit and international phenomenon "Fifty Shades of Grey" is releasing a new companion book telling the story from leading man Christian Grey's perspective.

The new book, "Grey," out Thursday, is a spinoff on the original "Fifty Shades of Grey."

What you may not realize is that "Fifty Shades" began as a fan fiction spinoff of the popular "Twilight" novels before it was published without an agent through a small, online writers community.

After reading the "Twilight" series, "Fifty Shades" author E.L. James started posting her own erotic take on the novels on Fanfiction.net, an online forum that allows fans to write stories based on the settings and characters in some of their favorite works.

"I just sat on my sofa and just read them and read them and read them," James told ABC back in 2012, referring to the books in the "Twilight" series. "I was inspired by ['Twilight' author] Stephenie Meyer ... she just kind of flipped this switch in my head." Shortly after reading the books, James says she sat down and decided to write a book of her own.

"It was one of tens of thousands, really hundreds of thousands, of stories written by this vast community of women who were inspired to write and share stories by 'Twilight,'" Anne Jamison, author of "Fic: Why Fanfiction is Taking Over the World," told CBC News.

Many readers deemed James' stories too provocative for Fanfiction.net, however, and she was forced to remove some of them from the site. "She took it down and thought, I’d always wanted to write. I’ve got a couple unpublished novels here," James' agent told the LA Times. "I will rewrite this thing, and create these iconic characters, Christian and Ana."

Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, the two protagonists of "Fifty Shades," are basically Edward Cullen and Bella Swan of "Twilight."

twilight eclipseIn "Fifty Shades," Christian Grey is a mysterious, jaw-droppingly handsome CEO. In "Twilight," Edward Cullen is a mysterious, jaw-droppingly handsome vampire.

In both stories, the heroine is understated, "pretty" but not "beautiful," and intimidated by the men's wealth and good looks. Both Bella and Ana are clumsy and routinely question what their male counterpart sees in them.

James went on to create her own website — 50shades.com — where she could post more of her writing. Her online serial, originally published under the title "Masters of the Universe," eventually led her to write "Fifty Shades of Grey," which James self-published through a small former writers community called The Writer's Coffee Shop in May 2011, according to Publishers WeeklyOne year later, she had sold roughly 30,000 copies in e-book downloads.

Screen Shot 2015 02 17 at 11.25.42 AMLiterary agents soon took notice of the book's rising online popularity. “There was already a buzz about the trilogy in early 2012, appreciation for the books had gone viral,” James’s literary agent Valerie Hoskins told Vanity Fair last week. "All of the Big Six (five now) publishers in New York City were very keen to offer for it.”

In March 2012, James signed a 7-figure contract with Random House’s Vintage Books. The book sold 10 million copies in six weeks. By the end of 2012, sales hit 70 million copies worldwide.

The series' humble origins are surprising given its record-breaking success. Since its mainstream release in 2012, "Fifty Shades" has sold over 125 million copies worldwide and launched an entire genre known as "mommy porn." It has been translated into 52 different languages and the long-awaited film adaptation, which premiered on Valentines Day, raked in $94 million on its opening weekend— a Presidents' Day record.

Supporters of fan fiction have mixed feelings about the book's overwhelming success. Some feel fan fiction is not supposed to be profitable, and that James betrayed the community and its values by signing a book deal with such a major publisher.

"It wasn't the first fan fiction to be published, by any means, but it was the first that was so big and so popular and got so much attention," Jamison told CBC.

Still, others are hopeful that James' success will set a precedent for writers of fan fiction to gain respect among the literary elite. Many publishers now scout potential clients through fan fiction sites.

"There were definitely editors that said they thought [fan] fic was over, which I think is funny in retrospect," Holly Root, a literary agent at Waxman Leavell in New York, told Vanity Fair. "That was 2012, and how many deals have there been since then?"

Bradley Cooper's new movie tells the crazy-but-true story behind inflatable artillery used to trick the Nazis

bradley cooper golden globes 2013On the heels of his Oscar-nominated performance as Navy SEAL Chris Kyle in last year’s hit, “American Sniper,” Bradley Cooper looks to be returning to the war-drama genre.

Deadline reports that 22 & Green, Cooper and his "The Hangover" director Todd Phillips' production company, has teamed with Warner Bros. to adapt the book “The Ghost Army Of World War II: How One Top-Secret Unit Deceived The Enemy with Inflatable Tanks, Sound Effects, And Other Audacious Fakery.

The book title kind of says it all.

In World War II, the US Army recruited artists to make up the secret 23rd Headquarters Special Troops with the mission to fool the Nazis in thinking the US Army was larger than it actually was.

They would become known as the “Ghost Army.”

To pull this off the unit created inflatable tanks and rubber airplanes and delivered phony radio messages to make Nazi forces think there were US forces in the area (when, in fact, they were not).

The film will also use the 2013 documentary “Ghost Army” (directed by coauthor of "The Ghost Army" book, Rick Beyer) as resource material.

There’s no word yet if Cooper will also star in the film.

The new 'Fifty Shades of Grey' book makes the billionaire hunk sound like a pig

grey fifty shades of grey companion book spinoff

Over the next few days, teens and women alike will be flocking to your local bookstore—or more likely heading to their virtual book stores to purchase ebook versions of the new "Fifty Shades of Grey" book out Thursday.

If you're not familiar with the premise by now, the original trilogy series follows the impressionable and naive soon-to-be college graduate Anastasia Steele and her budding romance with the impossibly gorgeous billionaire Christian Grey.

The catch?

He has a dark side, which just so happens to include a thing for BDSM relationships. (If you need more of a primer, head here.)

Announced only June 1, the new book, simply titled "Grey," is essentially the same exact book as the original 2011 title "Fifty Shades of Grey," but with a twist!

This time, instead of being told from the perspective of the virginal Steele, women get to read the exact same story from the much dirtier, kinkier mind of Christian Grey.

Since women basically fawn over Grey — the Universal Pictures adaptation made over $569 million worldwide at theaters — the idea is that women want to hear filthy juicy tidbits from the mind of the mysterious billionaire.

To date, the series has sold over 125 million copies worldwide.

Business Insider was sent a a review copy a day ahead of its anticipated release.

I eagerly volunteered as tribute to start reading through the book.

After all, when the initial series first came out, I was declared the "Fifty Shades of Grey" expert. (You can decide whether or not that's a good title to have.) I was the only one who openly admitted to reading all three books in the series, and didn't really care what anyone thought.

So, how is it?

I'm nearly a fifth of the way through the 559-page book, and not even 20 pages in you get the sense Christian is an egotistical, obsessive-compulsive, creepy stalker lusting after a college-aged girl.

Fifty Shades Of GreyThe Christian who Ana described in the original book? She was seeing that guy through rose-colored glasses. And, who can blame her? She's a 21-year-old getting wined and dined and is being sent rare first-edition copies of books from this billionaire who has randomly taken interest in her.

In the original 2011 book, it's like something out of a Cinderella story ... with bondage.

It's clear early on in "Grey" that Christian is seriously 50 shades of messed up, as the character famously says — in a somewhat more vulgar vernacular — in the original title.

When reading the first few chapters, it's evident that all he wants to do is get in Ana's pants.

After their initial meeting during an interview Ana conducts, Christian absolutely must know more about her, so, naturally, the resourceful billionaire that he is, he gets a background check on her (definitely boyfriend material).

When he discovers her place of employment in a hardware store, he heads there to pick up a few things just to see her again.

christian grey fifty shadesHere's how that visit goes.

When he first sees her he tells her it's "a pleasure" to see her again. Meanwhile, he's thinking:

A real pleasure. She's dressed in a tight T-shirt and jeans, not the shapeless s--- she was wearing earlier this week. She's all legs, narrow waist, and perfect t---.

At one point, he allows Ana to walk ahead of him. The gesture isn't to be a gentleman, but so he can size her up to see if she would make a good submissive to his dominant in the bedroom.

Letting her walk ahead gives me the space and time to admire her fantastic ass. Her long, thick ponytail keeps time like a metronome to the gentle sway of her hips. She really is the whole package: sweet, polite, and beautiful, with all the physical attributes I value in a submissive. But the million-dollar question is, could she be a submissive? She probably knows nothing of the lifestyle—my lifestyle—but I very much want to introduce her to it.

His thoughts when Ana asks him what kind of rope he's looking for:

"I groan inwardly, trying to chase away the image of her suspended from the ceiling of my playroom."

Yeah, this is the sort of guy your parents told you to avoid.

Later when Christian asks Ana if she always wears jeans and she responds mostly, this is what's on his mind:

And it's two strikes against her: incurable romantic who only wears jeans ... I like my women in skirts. I like them accessible.

At another point, when he's strapping her into a harness in his helicopter (the guy's rich), his mind wanders again:

"I like this harness," I mutter. I want to tell her I have others, in leather, in which I'd like to see her trussed and suspended from the ceiling. But I behave, sit down, and buckle up.

christian grey anastasia steele fifty shades of greyNot only is he thinking about ways to play with Ana in his sex room a lot, but Christian also gets unnecessarily jealous and overprotective any time any other guy pops up in the picture. This was hinted at in the original book, and even more so in the film adaptation, but it goes to another level in "Grey."

After only knowing Ana for a day, and then heading to the hardware store where she works, he freaks out internally when a male coworker comes over to engage Ana in conversation.

We both turn as a young man dressed in casual designer gear appears at the far end of the aisle. His eyes are all over Miss Anastasia Steele. Who the hell is this prick?

She walks toward him, and the a--hole engulfs her in a gorilla-like huge. My blood runs cold. It's a primal response. Get your f---ing paws off her.

This continues for awhile until he's positive this isn't Ana's boyfriend.

A similar reaction occurs when Ana introduces her long-time friend José Rodriguez to Christian the following day:

S---Is this the boyfriend?
Rodriguez blooms under Ana's sweet smile.
Are they f---ing?

Is he for real?

He's also incredibly insecure.

How long is Anastasia going to be? I check my watch. She must be negotiating the car swap with Katherine. Or she's talking to Rodriguez, explaining that she's just going for coffee to placate me and keep me sweet for the article. My thoughts darken. Maybe she's kissing him good-bye.

This billionaire is freaking out over a college-aged girl hypothetically making out with another college-aged kid. Dude needs to get a grip.

Reminder: This is the third interaction Christian and Ana have ever had and he's already extremely possessive of her.

christian grey fifty shades of grey And sure, if you read this knowing how the trilogy plays out — that Christian has a dark past and Ana helps him see the light and become a better man, then you can probably stomach Christian's dark thoughts. You can maybe even dismiss it and chalk it up to his unusual upbringing.

However, if this book came out before the original trilogy, it's tough to imagine that any woman would be fawning over being with this guy.

There's a part in the books where — spoiler — Christian learns Ana's never had sex. He's mortified by the news, and that he was so stupid to become so taken with "an innocent." He decides to "rectify the situation" by "making love" to her.

In the original, the scene is probably one of women's favorites. You're as excited as Ana for her to finally be with Christian.

There's a part where Christian says "You have the most beautiful skin, pale and flawless. I want to kiss every inch of it." The line makes Ana flush.

However, when reading it from Christian's point-of-view, it puts an entirely different perspective on the scenario. In "Grey," the same scene goes as follows:

You have the most beautiful skin, pale and flawless. I want to kiss every single inch of it." There's not a mark on her. The thought is unsettling. I want to see her marked ... pink ... with tiny, thin welts from a crop maybe.

And, though he reassures and tells Ana he wants to make love to her, afterward he wrestles with his thoughts, telling the reader:

F---ing her was merely a means to an end and a pleasant diversion.

Yes. Very pleasant.

More like incredible.

It was just sex, for f---'s sake.

This is 114 pages into the book.

For any self respecting woman, Christian's overwhelmingly kinky, sexual fantasies of Ana are kind of vile.

anastasia steele fifty shades of greyAnd sure, there are some parts of the book where Christian is humanized and you get an idea there's a better person hidden somewhere deep inside of this troubled young man.

Page 36:

Her eyes widen. They really are beautiful, the color of the ocean at Cabo, the bluest of blue seas. I should take her there. What? Where did that come from?

Page 39:

She takes my hand, and as we walk back to The Heathman I can't shake how agreeable her hand feels in mine. Maybe this could work

But then, you have a line like this:

Page 67:

An image of her shackled to my bench ... comes to mind, followed by judicious use of a belt or strap. Yeah ... That would teach her not to be so irresponsible. The thought is hugely appealing.

Christian even refers to himself as a stalker early on in "Grey." He knows he has a problem.

I'm itching to see her again—those blue eyes have haunted me, even in my dreams. I haven't mentioned her to Flynn (his therapist), and I'm glad because I'm now behaving like a stalker. Perhaps I should let him know.

To be fair, Christian is referred to as a stalker 12 times in the first book (we checked).

And for some reason, I guess it was just easier to overlook when you're getting caught up in Ana's rosy depictions of Christian.

From "Fifty Shades of Grey":

One minute he rebuffs me, the next he sends me fourteen-thousand-dollar books, then he tracks me like a stalker. And for all that, I have spent the night in his hotel suite, and I feel safe. Protected. He cares enough to come and rescue me from some mistakenly perceived danger. He's not a dark knight at all but a white knight in shining, dazzling armor—a classic romantic hero—Sir Gawain or Sir Lancelot.

The two of them even joke about it in an email exchange.

fifty shades of grey stalker 1fifty shades of grey stalker 2

The difference in these two books is that when you read it from Ana's perspective, you want to see her get together with Christian. You're kind of rooting for her. To her, he's this interesting dark, handsome, and mysterious man.

When you're reading it as Christian, you don't necessarily want him to be with the girl. He's kind of a monster, even if she is slowly bringing out something sort of good in him.

"Grey: Fifty Shades of Grey as told by Christian" is available in paperback in stores and digitally Thursday, June 18.

Here's the moment HBO knew its Scientology doc 'Going Clear' would be a huge hit

Church of Scientology

Although the HBO documentary “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief” is one of the most-watched docs in the history of the network, the head of HBO Documentary Films, Sheila Nevins, didn’t think a scathing look at the Church of Scientology would draw a lot of viewers when director Alex Gibney initially pitched her the idea.

Sheila Nevins Stephen Lovekin Getty“I never thought it would be sensational,” Nevins told Business Insider.

Before Gibney went to her, Nevins said she had never considered doing a film on the religion. She gave the go-ahead because she had confidence that the Oscar-winning Gibney ("Taxi to the Dark Side," 2007) could pull off a great adaptation of best-selling author Lawrence Wright’s book on the church, “Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief.

Nevins remembers the exact moment when she realized “Going Clear” was going to be a huge hit. “When I saw my name in a full page ad in The New York Times, I knew,” she said. “Docs don’t get full page ads, and when they do, they do really well.”

Nevins is referring to the ad that Scientology ran in The Times weeks before the film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

The ad compared “Going Clear” to the now infamous Rolling Stone story on campus rape at the University of Virginia, which turned out to be full of false claims. The headline in the ad read, “Is Alex Gibney’s Upcoming HBO ‘Documentary’ a Rolling Stone/UVA Redux?”

The ad then went on to outline numerous instances in which the church believed “Going Clear” was not factually correct.

Alex Gibney

It also stated: “Mr. Gibney and HBO documentary chief Sheila Nevins have rejected multiple requests to meet with executives of the Church, including those with individual firsthand information.”

“I thought, ‘They really don’t want us to do it,’” said Nevins. “All the reason more to do it.”

Nevins told The Hollywood Reporter months before the film premiered at Sundance that “probably 160 lawyers” were vetting the film.

Gibney told Business Insider by email that the legal process with HBO was “tough but fair,” and he couldn’t have imagined bringing the project anywhere else other than to HBO.

“They were fearless and supportive,” he wrote. “Sheila and HBO backed me up against the attacks we knew were coming and promoted the hell out of the movie.”

Thinking back on the whole ordeal, Nevins still can’t believe the church was so aggressive in trying to bash “Going Clear.”

“Scientology did their own commercial for us,” she said. “Going Clear” had its premiere airing on HBO in March and became the second most-watched documentary on the network in the past decade.

Donald Trump: I stand up to bullies like Rosie O'Donnell and China

Screen Shot 2015 06 18 at 9.20.34 AM

If he wins the 2016 presidential race, real estate developer Donald Trump wants voters to know he would stand up to bullies on the world stage.

He made this point in a Wednesday night Fox News interview while discussing his high-profile feud with fellow television personality Rosie O'Donnell.

Fox host Sean Hannity asked Trump about his Twitter spats with O'Donnell and whether that sort of behavior would "change in this current environment" of the presidential race.

Trump answered affirmatively but suggested O'Donnell had it coming because she was a "bully." He then said China was also a "bully" with its unfair trade practices.

"Of course it would. Look, when I fight someone — well, Rosie's a bully and she bullies people, but she didn't bully me. In fact, I was very proud. She said actually that was a big mistake she made when she took me on. The fact is that China is a bully to us. And they come out with statements: 'No, no, it's fair trade.' It's not fair trade," Trump replied. "What they do to their currency and manipulation makes it impossible for our countries to compete."

The Republican businessman made his opposition to the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a controversial 12-nation trade deal, a key part of his 2016 platform. He has also repeatedly accused China of "ripping us" by stealing US jobs. The Chinese government disputed some of Trump's claims after he announced his presidential campaign on Tuesday.

Trump, famous for getting into Twitter fights, has had multiple back-and-forths with O'Donnell over the years:

But Trump has also surprised O'Donnell by wishing her well:

Watch part of Trump's interview with Hannity below. (They discuss O'Donnell, bullies, and China about 8 minutes into the clip.)

Guess which day set the record for most flowers sold in the US

August 17th, 1977, the day after "the King of Rock and Roll" died, set the record for most flowers sold in the US on a single day.

According to then-Associated Press reporter Mark Knoller, who covered Elvis Presley's funeral in Memphis, the grounds of the Forest Hill Cemetery were a "sea of flowers."

elvis flowers"I remember a spokesperson for FTD, the flowers-by-wire service, telling us they had more orders that day for Elvis than ever before in their history,"  Knoller later wrote for CBS News. "We were told 3,116 floral arrangements had been delivered."

By that afternoon, Memphis ran out of flowers and scrambled to get additional flowers shipped in from around the nation.

Elvis, 42, was pronounced dead at the Baptist Memorial Hospital after his girlfriend found him unconscious in his bathroom on August 16th.

The official cause of death was cardiac arrhythmia.

"The King's" funeral was held on August 18th in his Graceland mansion.

The home remains the second-most visited residence in the US, after the White House.
