Christopher Nolan's sci-fi epic "Interstellar" isn't in theaters for another two weeks; however, fans are already praising the movie starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway as the must-see film of the fall.

From the director of "Inception" and "The Dark Knight" trilogy, the movie follows the two as they head on a space mission to save the future of the human race.

While there aren’t any written reviews yet, a select few have offered up quick thoughts on Nolan’s next film and reactions are overwhelmingly positive.

Both the "Shaun of the Dead" and "The Incredibles" directors loved it.

Page Six reported Paramount chief Brad Grey held a private screening of the film Sunday for a crowd that included Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Rock, Kevin Bacon, billionaire Ronald Perelman, and Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson.

"Interstellar" will be released two days early on Nov. 5 in 35mm and 70mm, and 70mm IMAX. More than an hour of "Interstellar" was filmed in IMAX while Nolan also shot on 35mm anamorphic film.

It will be everywhere Nov. 7. From the above, it sounds like the only way to see it is in IMAX.

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift has topped the iTunes Canada chart with an eight second clip of annoying static.

Possibly a glitch in the Canadian version of iTunes, a Taylor Swift song titled “Track 3” was released Tuesday morning and shot straight to the top spot, reports Canadian news outlet the National Post.

The eight seconds of white noise, sits just ahead of Swift's previous singles "Welcome To New York" and "Shake It Off."

The release of the audio file, which fans spent $1.29 to download, may be a snippet from a song on Swift's new album 1989, which  is scheduled for release on Oct. 27.

Neither Swift nor Apple have commented on the "song."

chrissy teigen leaning on a barAfter reports came in that there had been a shooting in Ottawa, Canada, on Wednesday at the Canadian Parliament, Sports Illustrated cover girl Chrissy Teigen tweeted the following:

What was supposed to be a sharp political comment on the paucity of gun-control laws in America was deemed insensitive by Teigen's followers — particularly those in Canada.

Teigen, sensing that not many people understood her commentary, first predicted an attack by Twitchy, the microblog platform started by right-wing pundit Michelle Malkin. Then she tried to clear the air, but she pointedly did not apologize.

But some remained unconvinced.

Finally, Teigen ended with the last word.

Benedict Cumberbatch Rolled Around On A Carpet To Bring The Dragon In ‘The Hobbit’ Movies To Life

smaug the hobbit

Benedict Cumberbatch seriously got into his role in “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.”

In the “Hobbit” sequel, Cumberbatch plays the role of the perilous dragon, Smaug. However, the “Sherlock” actor didn’t simply voice the dragon. He also acted out the role in a motion-capture suit.

Ahead of the release of “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” on Blu-Ray and DVD Nov. 4, Warner Bros. has released video showing the 38-year-old actor immersing himself into the role.

The best footage comes from the L.A. Times which has an exclusive video showing Cumberbatch act out the dragon in the motion capture suit.

It's amazing to see how much Cumberbatch really gets into it.

To get into the role, little motion capture tracking dots were placed onto Cumberbatch's face.

To prepare for the role, Cumberbatch told Los Angeles Times last year he went to the London Zoo to study animals including lizards.

"They really like doing very little," added Cumberbatch. "Then, when they act, it can suddenly be very violent or very slow and they really take their time. I tied all that in to the playing I did rolling around on that carpet."

Motion capture king Andy Serkis, who has played Gollum in both “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” films, gave Cumberbatch advice on playing Smaug.

“I said, ‘Treat it like you’re playing the role. Don’t think you’re just providing the voice. Go in there physically. Get what you can out of it,” said Serkis in a Warner Bros. featurette. “There will be head turns. There will be moments from that performance that you give that can be pulled out and extrapolated and will become part of Smaug’s being.”

A quarter of the shots in the film were CG, according to the special effects crew at WETA. Cumberbatch says about 80% of the dragon was created by them.

Here's how it looks side by side.

The actor didn't just roll around on the carpet. He also acted out the character from his own platform.

They built a wooden platform on stilts and they had this hard board that they’d padded with some foam and mats and stuff and on top of that they put this sheepskin," Cumberbatch told the LA Times. "It was literally like 'Baum chicka baum baum,' me up on my Smaug-y platform. I was like, 'This is cool, I can slink around like a porn star dragon.'”

Cumberbatch said he can see pieces of his motion capture performance in the final rendering of the dragon in his eyebrow movements and with the mouth during closeups with Bilbo (Martin Freeman) and Thorin (Richard Armitage).

"I absolutely loved it after a minute of stepping on and feeling completely like a nob," said Cumberbatch. "Once you get over that bit of self-consciousness, it’s so freeing. I just played like a kid in a bedroom, just imagining this thing, which is great."

Daymond John Reveals What It's Like Being A 'Shark Tank' Investor

0

daymond john

Growing up in Hollis, Queens, Daymond John's mother taught him that he was in charge of his own destiny. It was a message that inspired him to start the business that would make him a millionaire, the apparel company FUBU.

FUBU is no longer the powerhouse it was in the '90s, but John has been a sought-after branding and marketing expert since.

And today he is best known as a cut-throat investor on ABC's hit pitch show "Shark Tank," where he competes alongside the likes of Mark Cuban and Barbara Corcoran for the best deals.

His company Shark Branding manages the wide variety of investments he's made on the show.

We spoke with John about what motivates him as a businessman, what he looks for in an entrepreneur, and what it's like being a Shark.

The following interview has been edited for brevity and clarity.

Business Insider: Was there a moment when you knew you wanted to be an entrepreneur?

Daymond John: I never knew anything other than wanting to be an entrepreneur. I tried my first business when I was 6 years old, and I started another business when I was 8. I don't think I knew anything besides that.

BI: So it was always part of your identity?

DJ: Yeah. My parents always taught me that my day job would never make me rich; it'd be my homework.

BI: What drives you now?

DJ: Constantly learning. Making a change in people's lives; paying it forward. Being absolutely obsessed with loving what I do and loving the people I work with. Not doing anything necessarily for money. Doing it purely because it's exciting, and knowing that even though you're doing it because it's exciting, you're having something established and a way to make money from it, hopefully, but at least getting into the passion of the business first.

My new book coming out is called "The Power of Broke," and the philosophy of that is whatever I'm creating or doing makes use of my mental resources before I'm just throwing money at it. Money's not going to make it any better. It may make the opportunity come faster, but it also can hurt you if you think that money's going to solve it.

fubuBI: What was your business education? What got you to where you are now?

DJ: I barely finished high school. So it's purely trial-and-error, and it was proof of concept, meaning not only studying it, messing around a little bitbut also analyzing it. Because some people have bad ideas, or it's not the right time. So knowing when to stop your efforts because all the proof has given you that it won't work.

BI: What books have changed your life?

DJ: "Think and Grow Rich" was the number-one book in terms of being impactful. I read that at 16.

BI: Why was it so important to you?

DJ: The main takeaway from that was goal-setting. It was the fact that if you don't set a specific goal, then how can you expect to hit it? And if you don't set a specific goal, you could be setting negative goals without realizing it. So if you don't go, "I'm going to get a raise by the end of this year by putting in an extra two hours a day at work, which is going to compound into X amount of hours, which is going to make sure that my superiors see that I'm a team player," you may set a negative goal. "Eh, I don't feel like going to work. Eh, I don't feel like being a team player. No one in my job respects me." And you start setting a negative goal that will actually hurt you.

Think and Grow Rich napoleon hillBI: Are there other business books that have changed your life?

DJ: There are the normal ones that everybody loves. There would be "Rich Dad Poor Dad," "Who Moved My Cheese?;" I love all the Dale Carnegie books; "The One Minute Manager." I love newer ones like "Blue Ocean Strategy" and all the "Freaknomics" books.

BI: What's a favorite piece of advice from one of your mentors that you've never forgotten?

DJ: My mother said, "Money is a great slave but a horrible master." [It was her version of a French proverb.]

I think that in the earlier days, when I was a "wantrepreneur," I was really doing things because I thought what I wanted was to be rich. For the most part, those businesses failed, and then later when I started doing something casually because I loved it, that business burst.

So all those old sayings that your grandmother and grandfather used to tell you are actually somewhat real, you know? I learned that over the years. And then after becoming wealthy and having money, I failed at a lot of things, and that reinforced some of those theories that I was told at a young age.

BI: So now, as you've been working with entrepreneurs on "Shark Tank," what has your favorite investment been?

DJ: It hasn't aired yet, so I have to go with another one… It would be Al "Bubba" Baker's Boneless Ribs. Absolutely, yup.

BI: How involved are you with the entrepreneurs you make deals with?

DJ: Every one of them is different. Some it's purely cash. The others it's a little fusion of it. And then another would be I speak to them almost every day or we are running some of the business within my corporation.

I enjoy working with most of them no matter what. But some of them geographically aren't located in New York or there's nobody in New York. Also it may be an industry that I'm not well-versed in, so my role in there is not needed as much because the people who are in there are running the business really well and they just need me to do the heavy lifting once in awhile. It's like any relationship that anybody has, with a friend or a romantic relationship. Sometimes somebody puts a lot into a relationship, and sometimes somebody puts in very little. But it all depends.

Robert Herjavec Lori Greiner Daymond John Kevin O'Leary shark tank hosts judgesBI: When you're competing with the other investors on show, how much of that is getting heated in the moment, how much is personal, and how much is for the camera?

DJ: It's all in the moment. And in the moment, it does get personal here and there. None of it is for the camera. Listen, I don't care if you're my brother — if we go play football I'm gonna try to crack your head open. It doesn't mean that I don't love you. It doesn't mean that I don't respect you. But I'm going to try to crack your head open! There is real stuff at stake. There's real money, and there are also real egos. And you have 10 million people watching you get smacked down on national television! It's real.

Ninety-five, ninety-seven percent of the time, as soon as that deal is over, we have totally forgotten. Have we carried a little animosity throughout that day of shooting over one deal that we really liked? Yes. But I think that's why we are at the level we are in life.

BI: What's an example?

DJ: Robert [Herjavec] beat me out of a deal this last season. It hasn't aired yet. The deal was apparel-based, it was fitness-based, and Robert beat me out. So I'm sitting there saying to myself, "Should I be mad at Robert or should I be mad at myself?" Because this a natural layup for me. The person knows my expertise. What didn't I communicate to that person that made me lose the deal, or what did I say to that person that may have pissed them off?

I can't be so mad at Robert. It's almost like going into sports. Two boxers go out there and somebody whoops your ass — you know you weren't on top of your game in that fight. I don't know if I'm mad at that person.

BI: How do you decide what's worth your money and how much?

DJ: That's the problem. We get caught up in so many things in the moment, and we always spend more than we want. [laughs] So we're like, "I've got 10 companies, 15 companies this year! Oh my God, what's wrong with me?" But that's the nature of the beast. We're opportunistic. We're sharks. We smell something, and we're like, "Man, this is a great opportunity for me to be part of a new industry or for me to do something that's amazing. I'll do the deal!" You can't help it, man.

BI: What's your all-time favorite and least favorite pitch?

scrub daddyDJ: My favorite one would probably be Scrub Daddy that Lori got into. It was like watching an infomercial without the editing. He was so good. He was just great.

I hated Scottevest— not even Scottevest, that Copa Da Vino pitch. I don't know about saying "the worst," but with some I didn't like the people. They were obnoxious or there for the wrong reasons.

BI: Does it come down to the person selling themselves more than their product? If you don't like a person, you're not going to want to work with them?

DJ: A hundred-and-twenty percent. We're not investing in companies. We're investing in people. There's nothing that we've seen, that you will ever see, that is brand new. It's always going to be a new form of delivery or a new angle on it. Instead of working in seven minutes it works in six. So it's not going to be what you like. You are going to have to potentially talk to the person on the other side of that pitch every day for the next 20 years. Can you deal with that person?

BI: What is your advice to an entrepreneur pitching you? How can someone appear more likeable?

DJ: You can't know what the other person is going to like about you. You may look like their husband's ex-girlfriend!

But for the most part, the best thing to do is be very smart with comments — but not too smart with the investors. The investors may feel like, "You know what, you're so smart, I need you, because this is something tech-based and I need you to figure it out." Or they may feel like, "You know what, you're so smart that I'm never going to see my money because you'll be stealing it every two minutes."

You have to be energetic — but you also don't want to be too energetic. Because if you're too energetic, the investors may be like, "This is a show. You're trying to sell me a bunch of smoke and mirrors." No matter what, the most important part is that you need to make the investors feel like you're going to wake up every day and bust your butt.

And show that you have determination and you have a level of honesty. Honesty means that you don't go up there and act like what you're doing is so great and that it's never had any problems. Tell me about the problems as much as you tell about the opportunities, and how you may have solved some of the problems.

etonic

BI: Do the Sharks get paid per episode? And is there an allotment for investing?

DJ: The Sharks get paid per episode, and there is no allotment. Producers and ABC do not tell us what we can and cannot spend, or expect to spend. They couldn't do that. We're like any host or talent or judge; we get paid per episode, but it's nowhere near the money we spent. [laughs].

There's no limit on what you get to spend. If someone comes in the door asking for $5 million and you feel you can make money off of them, or if someone comes in asking for $50,000 and you feel you can make money off of them [you go for it]. And the $50,000 might be better than the $5 million one. It's just the stage you want to spend it on. People always look at it as, "Oh, you spent so much." Well, you spend, and you also start to make cash off it as well. So it's money at work. That's basically all it is.

BI: How much time does being a Shark require?

DJ: It is a big job. Every one of us has hired probably 15 to 20 people to handle all these projects and companies. It is not like anything else where you finish shooting and you go home. We finish a show and then we go to work. It probably takes up a good six to eight months of our lives [each year].

BI: Can you tell me a little bit about what you're working on at the moment?

DJ: I'm working on this recent season as well as those from the past. What I'm excited about: There are a couple companies that have recently aired: Bombas socks, SunStaches, and Sleeping Baby. They've all been pretty strong performers. And I'm still working with Al "Bubba" on his boneless ribs, and he's amazing and the product has come along amazingly. And then I have this guy Nate from Mission Belt. Those are the "Shark Tank" investments that I'm doing really well with.

And personally, we just acquired a company Etonic, the old footwear company. And we just released our Akeem "The Dream" Olajuwon retro sneakers that were one of the first athletic sneakers of their kind. And we're really doing well with that. FUBU is having some level of retro comeback — not the way we used to be before, but for a younger generation. The hipsters are finding it.

Morgan Spurlock's New Short Film Explains The Market Economy So Even A Caveman Could Get It

Screen Shot 2014 10 22 at 3.17.22 PM

Only 39% of American adults have a budget and keep close track of their spending, according to the 2014 Financial Literacy Survey conducted by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling.

Not to mention that 32% of households don't save for retirement, and 60% haven't looked at their credit score in the last year.

However, that same survey finds that 59% of us give ourselves grades of "A" or "B" when it comes to financial literacy.

Maybe we don't know as much as we think we do.

Microsoft cofounder Paul G. Allen and movie director Morgan Spurlock want to change that. Allen's Vulcan productions and Spurlock's Cinelan produced a series of short films called "We The Economy: 20 Short Films You Can't Afford To Miss."

The 20 short documentaries, directed by a handful of well-known directors, tackle everything from Wall Street ("The Street," directed by Joe Berlinger) to the Federal Reserve ("Fed Hed," directed by Catherine Hardwicke) to what the government has to do with our money ("Taxation Nation," directed by Jessica Yu).

"I think we live in a country and we live in a time, where, you know, a lot of us are economically illiterate," Spurlock told Marketplace's Kai Ryssdal. "I think that our eyes glass over, we kind of go into a slump hearing about derivatives or market fluctuation or the Federal Reserve. I think having a basic understanding of how these things work, and how they impact our lives, is important."

Take, for instance, the first film in the series: Spurlock's own roughly seven-minute "Cave-o-Nomics," which explains how the market economy began.

We start off with the formal definition of the economy (yawn):

Screen Shot 2014 10 22 at 2.54.28 PM

But are soon introduced to (most likely historically inaccurate) cavemen Ugg and Glugg, who realize that by trading the things they have with each other, they can get the things they need.

we the economy gif

When Ugg and Glugg realize that they can trade the things they have for things other people have, their cave market is born, a place where "skilled tradesmen could sell their goods to more and more people."

Those marketplaces led to businesses, which led to industries, which allowed the cave-businesspeople to sell their wares far beyond the cave.

Screen Shot 2014 10 22 at 3.01.56 PM

But, as the narrator points out, markets are about other people trying to improve their interests, too. "After all," he says, "competition drives innovation."

Soon, an interloper has begun to siphon off Ugg's spear clients with a new and improved spear model. "Innovation drives productivity," continues the narrator, "and productivity drives profit."

we the economy 2

"The greater the supply, the cheaper the price," the narrator says. "The cheaper the price, the greater the demand. The greater the demand, the higher the productivity. The higher the productivity, the cheaper the price."

The film points out that factors like scarcity, quantity, and quality will also affect the value of any given product.

Screen Shot 2014 10 22 at 3.11.45 PM

The sale of goods soon became the sale of services, and the government took on the role of policing the marketplace. "Free markets function best if a playing field is level," the narrator tells us. "If any one individual, group, or company has an unfair advantage, people lose faith and the whole thing can crumble."

Although the government, meant to regulate the markets, can be a source of corruption itself, the film explains that the markets only work if the people participating in them think they benefit. "In the end, markets are only as strong as the confidence people have in them," the narrator says.

hulk buster avengers age of ultron

Well, so much for waiting a week.

"The Avengers: Age of Ultron" trailer leaked online Wednesday evening and it is hauntingly terrifying and awesome.

Tuesday evening, Marvel announced the trailer would debut during next week's episode of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." on ABC.

After the leak, the teaser was quickly removed from the internet. Marvel issued a quick, clever response blaming fictional terrorist organization Hydra.

In an unexpected move, Marvel decided to reveal the trailer early. It's a pretty smart tactic to prevent people from circulating around a poor quality version.

Enjoy!

Marvel Had The Best Response To 'The Avengers' Sequel Trailer Leak

Wednesday evening, "The Avengers: Age of Ultron" teaser trailer leaked nearly a week ahead of its scheduled Oct. 28 release on ABC.

In response, Marvel tweeted a simple, brilliant quip blaming fictional terrorist organization Hydra.

The company then topped that response by ultimately deciding to release the trailer for all to see.

That was immediately followed by the official teaser poster for the film.

avengers age of ultron teaser poster

It's a smart move by Marvel and parent company Disney.

Normally, they'll pull a leak and call it a day. We've seen that when the end-credits sequence for "Guardians of the Galaxy" found its way online right before the film's release in August. Otherwise, you're usually hard pressed to find a leak from the studio.

This time was a little different. Instead of trying to shy away from the leak, the company totally embraced it.

Marvel knew the trailer was circulating fast. They also know this is arguably going to be the biggest film of 2015 (other than Disney's other movie, "Star Wars").

Give the fans what they want.

If you don't, they'll just find another way to watch. And Disney and Marvel don't need GIFs and screengrabs of a blurry leaked trailer circulating around the internet.

Here's Ted Cruz Doing His Best Imitation From 'The Godfather'

ted cruz bloomberg

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who is looking at running for president in 2016, is apparently a huge fan of "The Godfather."

At the end of an interview on Bloomberg's "With All Due Respect" on Wednesday, Cruz was asked to either explain which character was "the most compelling" in the movie series or do his best "Godfather" imitation.

Cruz initially demurred on the imitation request.

"Well, much to my team's relief, I'll probably resist doing 'Godfather' impressions — although if you get a beer in me I might not," he quipped.

Instead, Cruz praised the lead role in the movies, Michael Corleone, as the most compelling.

"The most compelling character is always Michael Corleone because he is engaged in a moral battle, where in each decision he's trying to do the right thing," Cruz said. "He ends up being a mass murderer in every movie."

Cruz then reversed himself and offered an imitation of a famous scene from the final movie in the series.

"It's summed up in 'Godfather III' when an older Michael Corleone says," Cruz continued, switching to a raspier voice, "'Every time I get out, they keep pulling me back in!'"

Finance Minister George Osborne Wants To Move An American Football Team To London

Oakland London

British Chancellor George Osborne endorsed permanently moving an NFL team to the UK, in an interview with London's Evening Standard.

The NFL has played matches at Wembley Stadium in London since 2007 to gauge the public response. So far, the American football games have been well-received by the British crowds and Osborne wants to capitalize on that enthusiasm.

"This is primarily a decision for the owners of the clubs and the NFL organization but I’ve said to the NFL that anything the Government can do to make this happen we will do, because I think it would be a huge boost to London," Osborne told the Evening Standard.

The plan has been in discussion for quite some time and the most likely option would be for one of the 32 existing NFL teams to relocate to the UK, rather than creating a brand new one.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are prime candidates because the team's owner, Shahid Kahn, also owns the London-based Fulham Football Club. The Jaguars play the Dallas Cowboys at Wembley on Nov. 9.

Osborne thinks there's a chance that a relocation could happen within the next few years, according to Evening Standard.

It seems many are in favor of having an NFL team based in London. Alistair Kirkwood, managing director of NFL UK, told The Independent: "We're very interested in exploring the idea of a British-based franchise and seeing if we can pull it off. That's the way of making our sport much more mainstream."

The owners of Wembley Stadium, the Football Association, think a London-based NFL team would be profitable, although there is the potential for it to be a logistical nightmare with scheduling and air travel.

Osborne is still excited about the plan: "We could have not just the Star Spangled Banner at the beginning of NFL games but also God Save The Queen," he told the Evening Standard.

The Atlanta Falcons will play the Detroit Lions at Wembley on Saturday.

netflix bloodline

Netflix released a teaser trailer for its next original series, "Bloodline," and, so far, it leaves much to be desired.

There's not much to see in the 30 second teaser except a burning boat, rocking on the water ... in the rain. A voiceover tells us some unidentified group of people did a bad thing but that they're "not bad people."

Netflix describes the show as centering on "a close-knit family of four adult siblings whose secrets and scars are revealed when their black sheep brother returns home."

The series comes from the creators of "Damages" and stars "Friday Night Lights" actor Kyle Chandler along with Ben Mendelsohn ("The Dark Knight Rises"), Sissy Spacek, and Jamie McShane ("Sons of Anarchy").

All 13 episodes of season one will debut on Netflix March 2015.

Chuck Norris, the martial artist and star of "Walker, Texas Ranger," is demanding people give their money to the Lone Star State's GOP gubernatorial candidate, Greg Abbott.

Norris, who has spoken out on behalf of conservative candidates in the past, endorsed Abbott on Wednesday. One day later, Norris sent out his first fundraising email to Abbott's supporters.

It was far from your standard request for donations.

The message capitalized on the internet meme associated with Norris, which involves descriptions of Norris performing incredible feats of strength that often bend the rules of space and time.

In the email, which included a gif, Norris suggests donors should give to Abbott "because I said so."

Check out the uniquely Chuck Norris donation solicitation below.

[Supporter],

It’s been said that guns have two enemies… rust, and politicians.

Anti-gun politicians – like President Obama and his allies.

Greg Abbott needs your help to protect our Second Amendment rights – and our other rights guaranteed to us by the Constitution. Join me in supporting Greg Abbott by making a contribution.

There are some liberals here in Texas who want to impose restrictive gun control in our state, from limiting concealed carry laws to banning gun shows on city property.

That’s just backwards.

But if he’s elected governor, Greg Abbott will make sure that the next four years in Texas don’t look like the last six years under Barack Obama.

So [Supporter], get out and vote for Greg Abbott – and contribute to his campaign today– because I said so.

Chuck Norris Gif

And, because Greg Abbott has the vision and the plan to make Texas an even better place to live for future generations.

Sincerely,

Chuck Norris

silicon valley TV show HBO

HBO's show "Silicon Valley" has been green lit for Season 2 and it just started filming Thursday.

The show has been called the Bay Area's first "accurate satire" by ventura capitalist Marc Andreessen.

Produced by Mike Judge, "Silicon Valley" tracks a first-time founder who launches a startup, pivots, attracts massive buy-out offers, and turns them down to build a long-term business.

"I know every single person in that show," Andreessen told New York Magazine. He says he knows who the main venture capitalist in the show is based off of, and that he enjoys talking to that person regularly.

Judge hasn't said when exactly Season 2 will air, but it will be sometime in 2015.

Why A Feminist Professor Is Teaching An Entire Class About Beyoncé

beyonce super bowl halftime showYou know you’ve made it when people recognize you by your first name. Cher, Robyn, and Madonna have all become single names, and now Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter has, too.

One of the best-selling artists of all time, the multi-talented performer and businesswoman is a superstar to millions around the world.

But to the professor Kevin Allred and roughly 30 students at Rutgers University, Beyoncé is something more — a feminist, a gay icon, and a powerful political figure.

Allred teaches a wildly popular women’s studies course, “Politicizing Beyonce: Black Feminism, US Politics, & Queen Bey.”

The class is at capacity, and the room is cramped — especially because he encourages students to bring their friends. But that doesn’t stop them from rocking out to Beyonce’s greatest hits.

“They usually sign up because they're big fans of Beyoncé's music, but they quickly start to make connections beyond just being fans," Allred says.

Allred, 33, says he’s been a huge fan of Beyoncé for a long time, but he didn’t think of her as a political actor until he came across an essay by Yale Professor Daphne Brooks that linked the singer to black, female disempowerment.

“She argued that Beyoncé's 'B'day' album should be seen in the same trajectory as more explicitly recognized black female protest singers,” Allred says. “I was compelled by the article and began to use Beyoncé in my teaching to spark students' interest in having conversations around gender, sexuality, and race.”

beyonce vma awardsBeyoncé’s music challenges many of society’s conceptions about gender, sexuality, and race, according to Allred, who says her prominence gives her political influence.

“Beyoncé is a political figure because she commands attention — perhaps the most attention of any entertainer today. People listen when she talks and people question things when she raises the question herself,” he says.

attached imageWhile Allred admits her influence isn’t explicitly governmental or legislative, he says she has the power to inspire cultural movements for change.

The Queen Bey wrote a note on gender inequality for the Shriver Report, hosted a high-dollar fundraiser for Barack Obama, is a champion of LGBT equality, and increasingly highlights feminism in her work.

"Her song lyrics also stress equality and partnership over traditional gender roles," Allred says. "Some songs even go so far as calling out the ways relationships and the ways we perceive sexuality are bound to fail because they have been based on these outdated stereotypes."

In a track from her latest album, “Flawless,” Beyoncé samples Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's viral TED talk on feminism. The image the track produced when Beyoncé performed it at this year’s Video Music Awards was unmistakable. In letters 12 feet high, “FEMINIST” lit up the stage.

“I've already had students in my Intro Women's Studies courses that say they wanted to learn more about gender and take a class because they heard Beyoncé talk about it on the new album,” Allred says.

feminist beyonce vmasGay men and women also identify with the artist. Allred says she frequently adopts lesbian styles by wearing suits and "men's" shirts, carries herself with a masculine swagger, and often jumps between gender styles — especially as her alter ego Sasha Fierce.

Speaking on the issue of same-sex marriage, and in a reference to her song "Single Ladies," Beyoncé said, "If you like it you should be able to put a ring on it." Her husband, rapper Jay-Z, said, "It's no different than discriminating against blacks — it's discrimination, plain and simple."

inauguration beyonce obamaIn Allred’s course, Beyonce’s music is paired with black, feminists texts, another love of his.

“That way, students are getting an education in the history of black feminist theory in the US, just using Beyoncé as the focal point,” he says. “I let them be pretty fan-oriented on the first day, but urge them for the remainder of the semester to push past that and engage academically.”

When he tells people what he does, Kevin says people are often surprised. Tons of jaw drops, a lot of exclamations over how excited they are to hear that something like that exists. Overwhelmingly positive stuff,” he says.

I've only ever had one really really nasty email that classes like mine would mark the end of the world," he added, but I eventually made peace with the guy and he's not so mad about it now. "

Microsoft reported Q1 earnings on Thursday, and it's looking pretty good for the company across the board.

The company said that total Xbox console sales were 2.4 million, growing 102%. However, Microsoft didn't specify how many were Xbox 360s and how many were Xbox Ones.

It also noted that the Xbox One was released in 28 new markets.

We don't know yet how that compares with Microsoft's biggest competitor, Sony, and its PlayStation consoles. Sony will release its earnings next week.

NPD reported that in September, and for the past nine months in a row, the PlayStation 4 was the top-selling console, according to GameSpot.

Xbox sales booming could be in part because of a free-game promotion Microsoft was offering with new Xbox One purchases.

Beverly Hills has a new star moving into the neighborhood. Jennifer Lawrence just plopped down a cool $8.2 million for Jessica Simpson's old pad, according to real estate website Trulia.

Lawrence bought the property from an unknown buyer after Jessica Simpson sold it in October 2013 for $6.4 million.

Simpson isn't the only one: Paul Hogan, Ellen DeGeneres, and other industry bigwigs have all called this mansion home, Trulia reports.

The mansion has 5 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms for a total of 5,500 square feet. The gated and walled property was custom built in 1991.

Lawrence joins a neighborhood of stars, as Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, who just moved in down the street.

The property is fully walled and gated, offering the ultimate in privacy to its A-list owner.

The house is also located in one of the most private and secure celebrity enclaves in Beverly Hills.

A formal living room delights guests with classical touches like hanging chandeliers. Adjacent to the living room is the formal dining room.
