The Kickstarter Campaign To Bring Back 'Reading Rainbow' Just Broke The Record For Most Backers Ever

"Reading Rainbow" was one of the most popular kids' TV shows of the '80s and '90s, inspiring an entire generation of children to find the adventure in reading. The show won 26 Emmys and a Peabody Award in 23 years on the air.

"Reading Rainbow" was cancelled in 2006, but this May, former host LeVar Burton launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring it back. The project reached its goal of $1 million in just 11 hours.

Now it's been confirmed that "Reading Rainbow" has the most backers in the history of Kickstarter, with 92,003 people pledging more than $4.5 million.

Burton tweeted the news this morning.

Kickstarter then confirmed.

Though "Reading Rainbow" shattered the record for the most people donating money to a project, the Pebble remains the most-funded Kickstarter project of all time, with $10 million raised by 68,000 backers.

Burton initially sought to raise $1 million with his Kickstarter campaign, but he later adjusted the goal to $5 million in the hopes that it would help even more kids get access to "Reading Rainbow" materials online.

Over the weekend, Seth MacFarlane pledged to match all donations up to $1 million. Only 48 hours remain in the campaign, and they still have $500,000 to go.

'Age Of Extinction' Was The Most Difficult 'Transformers' Movie To Make

bumblebee transformers 4 age of extinction"Transformers: Age of Extinction" is a huge success at theaters making more than $300 million worldwide since its debut.

However, the film wouldn't be a reality without the visual effects team at Industrial Lights and Magic (ILM) who has been hard at work for about a year and half bringing the sequel to the big screen.

We recently spoke with ILM's visual effects supervisor Scott Farrar, who has overseen every single "Transformers" film to date. He tells Business Insider the fourth installment of the franchise was the most difficult film to work on yet with the crew working until nearly two weeks before the movie's release date to perfect the film.

"This one was a lot harder," Farrar told Business Insider. "There were quite a number of new characters. Each and every one has a lot of new characters, but this one has new and more styles of characters just because of colors and construction. [There are] 10 new characters or so but what was hard about this one was that there were more shots than we’ve done before."

transformers age of extinction autobotsFarrar says handled more shots than ever before on "Age of Extinction." An estimated 500 people worked on the film's visual effects which comprise about 90 minutes of the film's two-and-a-half hour runtime.

"Sometimes another company was involved to do some of the shots. That was not the case," said Farrar. "We did all the shots or were in control of them."

For the fourth film, the ILM team had to work on more shots in less time. The addition of IMAX and 3D in the film also added to the film's complexity.

"The shots were very very dense," said Farrar. "It wasn’t just a character against a bad guy. In many cases it was two or three robots, all with speaking parts, in scenes where they might be inside the Night Ship and it’s not just a ship and the characters, it’s hundreds of layers of sparks and lighting effects and all these different things to give the space a reality."

"[With 3D] there's all this stuff where you’re rendering two eyes not just one," he added. "It’s not like a simple shape. A robot, you can see inside it - all the little parts - thousands of little things are moving and turning and I think that’s fun for the audience."

The most difficult process though is bringing the Transformers themselves to life which Farrar says could take up to 15 weeks to build.optimus prime transformers 4

"The initial problem with a Transformers character is that you always want them to move fast and as cool in spite of the fact that they’re very very heavy," says Farrar.

"Optimus is supposed to be about 30,000 pounds, but if you have him lumbering around like a big, slow robot like you see in old movies it's not very interesting," he adds. "A big factor, especially with Michael Bay, is you got to make things look cool."

When coming up with ways to move the different Transformers there's thought put into individualizing each robot.transformers grimlock

"We try to come up with character differences. Inspite of Grimlock, the T-Rex, the spinosaurus looking different, you also want them to act different. Some of the animators think about that as they work out what their characters are," says Farrar.

Despite the added labor of the latest installment, Farrar says communication with director Michael Bay was easier the fourth time around.michael bay transformers 4 set

"We did a live transmission almost daily, sometimes more than once with him," Farrar explained. "[Bay's] in his office down in Santa Monica. We're up here in San Francisco. We don't all have to be in the same room, but he can call us up and say 'Transmission in 10 minutes, okay?'  We go to our room and ... at any given moment we can pull up any shot that we're working on any piece of a shot, any part or artwork or anything and pull it up. We can look at it and talk about it. We both see it. We see him on camera, he sees us on camera, and we do this live feed every day. Without that, I don't know how we would get this movie done."

"If I have anything that's a problem, I don't do email. I need to know the answer right now," Farrar added. "I'll pick up the phone, talk to him. He'll pick up the phone, talk to me. We don't have time for email."

A Woman Claims This Creepy 'Dexter' Ad Is The Reason She Broke Her Ankle

A New York City subway rider claims that a “Dexter” ad in Grand Central Terminal was so terrifying that it caused her to fall down a stairwell and break her right ankle.

Now, she’s suing.

Ajanaffy Njewadda filed a lawsuit with the Bronx Supreme Court saying the placement of the ad in Grand Central was hazardous, ABC News reports.

To promote the final season of "Dexter," Showtime used a disturbing image of Michael C. Hall. In the photo, Hall is pulling plastic wrap, a tool Dexter uses to tie his victims down, tightly over his face.

Dexter Grand Central

According to the Njewadda's filing, she was standing on the stairs with the 'Dexter' ad and turned around to look for her husband. When she turned back she was so shocked by Dexter's face that she lost her balance and fell. She broke her ankle and hit her head.

Njewadda's attorney, Rehan Nazrali, told The Daily Mail his client also had nightmares and could not go to that subway station for several months after the incident.

Nazrali says the placement and use of this "shockvertisement" was reckless and is directly responsible for his client's injuries.

"I think they should realize that they’re trying to elicit a psychological response from the viewer. They want something kinetic. There’s nothing wrong in doing that, but you don’t want to destroy people," he told The Daily Mail.

Njewadda is suing Showtime, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the New York City Transit Authority, New York City, and CBS Outdoor Americas (the group contracted to place the ad in the subway).

"X-Men: Days of Future Past" may still be raking in cash at theaters, but director Bryan Singer is already looking ahead to the next sequel out May 2016.

Singer joined Instagram today and his inaugural image was a tease at the next film's working script.

Check it out below:

Fans will notice the prologue starts in the same setting as the end-credits scene seen at the end of "Days of Future Past" this summer.

That scene showed a camera pan over Ancient Egypt and gave a brief glimpse at Apocalypse, one of the X-Men's most famed villains.

Apocalypse X Men

"THE FOUR HORSEMEN" reference alludes to four mutants he recruits to work alongside him that were briefly teased in the end credits.

The script is written by Singer, Simon Kinberg, Michael Dougherty, and Dan Harris.

'Community' Will Return For A Sixth Season Thanks To Yahoo (YHOO)

Fans rejoice: "Community" has returned from the dead!

Yahoo released the news on their entertainment site. The 13-episode season will include Greendale favorites like Joel McHale, Alison Brie, and Yvette Nicole Brown. Danny Pudi, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong have also signed on for Season 6.

"Community" was canceled by NBC in May after stuggling to acheive sucessful ratings. The show's fan base, while devoted, appeared not to be very broad. Since its cancellation many have speculated that Sony TV would pick up the show online.

Yahoo Screens  Yahoo's video-steaming hub  announced the return of "Community" on Twitter:

McHale noted the advantages of "Community" being exclusively online.

"Thank you to the greatest f%$#ing fans in the history of the human race," he said. "It’s the internet. We can swear now."

Yahoo has even hinted at bringing back Donal Glover, who played Troy alongside Danny Pudi (Abed) in the always uplifting "Troy and Abed in the Morning!"

“I'm just going to go home, kill a chicken, drink its blood, make a ‘Blair Witch’ thing out of its bones, pray to every deity that I have to that if we do get a sixth season that Donald will have tired of his Donald-ness,” said Harmon at a panel in March.

Buzzfeed's Samir Mezrahi captured Twitter's reaction to the news best:

These Beautiful Illustrations Show Every Major Death On 'Game Of Thrones'

HBO's "Game of Thrones" is known for the surprising deaths of some of its most major characters. Some deaths are pretty gruesome, while others can be quite beautiful.

That's why HBO collaborated with the digital marketing agency 360i and artist Robert Ball to put together the "Beautiful Death" series, which chronicles the show's major deaths by turning them into works of art.

We spoke with Ball and asked him about the series and how he puts it together.

WARNING: "GAME OF THRONES" SPOILERS AHEAD.

For his first piece, Ball took blood and turned it into a map of Westeros. "I decided early on that there should be more to them than straight illustration," Ball told us. According to him, doing this gave it "more intrigue and depth."

Blade, Westeros, beautiful death, game of thrones

The depth and intrigue of the series has helped it stand out. For example, turning the beheading of season one's protagonist, Ned Stark, into birds flying into the heavens created a beautiful image out of one of the most unexpected deaths on the show.

Ned Stark, Beautiful Death, Game of Thrones

Ball says the images only take a couple of days to put together. The image for season three's bloody and shocking Red Wedding didn't take that long to create.

Red Wedding, Game of Thrones, Beautiful Death

One of Ball's favorite pieces was of Arya's first kill in season two. "I wanted to show that the little girl that was Arya is no more," He said. "To me it's direct, simple and powerful - the most emotional of the pieces."

Arya, Coin, beautiful death, game of thrones

According to Ball, all of the work is digital. However, some do contain hand drawn elements. This is how Ball responded to King Joffrey's poisoning in season four.

Joffrey, Beautiful Death, Game of Thrones

When the fourth season came around, Ball didn't have any idea of the upcoming deaths so he created images as they occurred like the trial by combat piece below. "I was responding to each episode 'live' and worked on each piece week by week."

The Mountain and the Viper, Beautiful Death, Game of Thrones

Ball says not knowing shocking events like Tyrion murdering his father Tywin in the season four finale have been enjoyable. "It made season four even more exciting to watch," he said.

This Was The Hardest Transformer For The Movie's Visual Effects Team To Make

optimus prime transformers 4

Transformers: Age of Extinction" is out in theaters and with it comes a new batch of Transformers to excite on screen.

As one could imagine, it takes an incredible amount of hard work to make the Hasbro toys look incredible on screen.

That’s where the visual effects crew of Industrial Lights and Magic (ILM) comes in.

We caught up with ILM’s Scott Farrar, the visual effects supervisor on "Transformers: Age of Extinction,” who explained how long it takes to bring a Transformer in the film to life.

"It's a long struggle because they're not simple models," Farrar told Business Insider. "They're made of thousands of pieces. One robot might take 15 weeks or more to build just for the model maker to make the pieces and to paint, and assign gestures. Then it's another 15 just to rig it so it basically has a skeleton that you can animate."

There are at least 10 new Transformers in the latest sequel joining Optimus Prime and Bumblebee. However, there's one Transformer Farrar says was more complicated for the ILM team to put together.

"Crosshairs was as difficult as we've ever had," said Farrar. crosshairs transformers age of extinction

A lot of that had to do with the Transformer's chrome face which is difficult to work with because of the reflections you normally see on a chrome surface.

"One thing that we try and do, that I spend most of my days doing, is trying to light these things so they look as photoreal as possible," explained Farrar. "Well, to do that with a metal surface, like a car, what are you seeing? Color. But, you also see the reflection of the environment. You see the world around."

"A reflection of a face that has to show emotion but reflect everything is difficult inherently to deal with," he added. "So we do all these little tricks to change what the reflections look like so we can read the face better, so you can see the lights and darks. And then we added a little bit more scorch and dirt and color. We added a little bit of brass to his cheeks and his chin and different things to help you see what his facial emotion is when he's speaking or looking toward the camera. It took a while but we go in and we have to figure these things out."

Crosshairs is also the only Transformer we see on screen who turns into both a car and a helicopter, a nod to incarnations of the toy.  corvette stingray transformersFarrar said seeing the final project on screen is extremely rewarding for the ILM crew.

"It's a tribute to a monumental task that this crew accomplished. A lot of these folks have been with me through every other movie," he said. "That helps a great deal. There's so much commitment to the quality of the work ... the quality of work and the imagery have gotten better and better."

The Full Story Behind 'Dumb Starbucks' Will Finally Be Revealed

Dumb Starbucks/ Nathan Fielder

When a coffee shop called "Dumb Starbucks" mysteriously popped up for several days in Los Angeles earlier this year, the Internet went crazy with speculation over who could be behind the stunt.

The shop, which ruffled some feathers at Starbucks, gave away coffee for free in "Dumb Starbucks"-branded cups and was eventually shut down by the health department.

It was later revealed that Canadian comedian Nathan Fielder had orchestrated the opening.

This month, the full story behind the viral "Dumb Starbucks" marketing campaign will be aired on his Comedy Central show, "Nathan For You."

The second season of the show begins Tuesday (airing at 10:30 p.m. ET) and the "Dumb Starbucks" episode is set to air on July 29, according to USA Today.

Here's a preview of the episode.

In the show, Fielder offers bizarre marketing schemes to struggling business owners.

"People see these ideas as kind of dumb, so I think it's really funny when one does work," he told USA Today.

One of Fielder's most famous marketing schemes is when tried to help a Southern California zoo draw more traffic by staging a piglet rescuing a "drowning" goat. The original clip has been viewed nearly nine million times on YouTube.

This clip shows how he pulled off the stunt:

The Darkest Song From 'The Lion King' Was Based On A 1935 Nazi Propaganda Film

Scar, smoke, lion king

This year marks the 20th anniversary of one of the most successful animated films ever made, Disney's "The Lion King."

When the film first debuted in 1994, the film's themes of death, betrayal, and rebirth made it a pretty adult Disney movie.

One of the film's most adult scenes is when the evil lion Scar sings about his plan to murder his brother and king of the pride, Mufasa, in the song, "Be Prepared."

Yet, what most people don't realize is that the film's animators based much of the scene on a 1935 Nazi propaganda film titled "Triumph of the Will" that documents 1934 Nazi Germany.

According to an Entertainment Weekly article back in 1994, the song "grew out of one sketch by story staffer Jorgen Klubien that pictured Scar as Hitler. The directors ran with the concept and worked up a 'Triumph of the Will'-style mock-Nuremberg rally."

For example, the goose-stepping soldiers in "Triumph of the Will" march in formation through Nazi Germany.

Triumph of the will, marchingDuring "Be Prepared," the hyenas that Scar wants to use in his plan to kill Mufasa are grouped in a similar formation, goose-stepping almost the same exact way.Lion King, scar, marchingScar is also elevated for the majority of the sequence, standing on a cliff over looking his army.

Lion King, Be PreparedThis is very similar to how Hitler is portrayed in much of "Triumph of the Will."

Triump of the Will, HitlerYou may have also noticed the beams of light that shoot out around Scar while he's singing in the cave.

Lion King Beams of lightThese lights resemble the "Cathedral of Light" that were featured in many Nazi rallies during the 1930s.

Cathedral of light, Nazi GermanyThe adult themes of the film like those in "Be Prepared" didn't keep families away though.

When "The Lion King" was released in 1994 it was a box-office smash grossing $987 million worldwide. This made it the highest-grossing animated film in history at the time. It has since been surpassed by "Shrek 2."

Here's How Yahoo's 'Community' Episode Budget Compares To NBC

community joel mchale danny pudi

Yahoo announced Monday that it will revive NBC's cancelled "Community" for a 13-episode sixth season.

In addition to "hopefully" keeping the entire cast, Yahoo also plans to maintain the same production budget for each episode.

Zack Van Amburg, Sony Pictures Television president of programming and production, told The Hollywood Reporter how Yahoo's per-episode budget compares with NBC.

"We will not cut any money from what we were doing on the broadcast version of the show. No low-cost digital whatever; Yahoo was spectacular with that and told us how much they stand for quality. You haven't seen a whole slew of announcements out of them but when they make announcements, they want them to be loud and to stand for something. They really were beyond supportive with understanding the production demands of a sixth-year show. They are fully supporting it in their deal and beyond; it's pretty historic."

While the cost of a "Community" episode hasn't been released, E! Online reports that $1 million is "a starting point" for TV dramas like "Grey's Anatomy."

It appears Netflix has a higher budget. "The cheapest show is $3.8 million an episode ... 'House of Cards' started at $4.5 million and [executive producer David] Fincher took it way above that," CAA agent Peter Micelli said last year while speaking at an event at UCLA.

Micelli added, "The next series is ‘Hemlock Grove’ and they’re doing that for about $4 million an episode ... ‘Orange is the New Black’ is just under $4 million as well. They’re huge budgets shows, doing things in a huge way."

11 Ways To Watch Movies For Free

outdoor movie

Our ears always perk up when we hear the word "free," and movies are yet another freebie all of us love to snag without paying a dime (in addition to books and magazines!).

Check out the many ways you can watch them for free:

1. RedBox hack: Have a RedBox rental near you? Use these rental codes from Inside Redbox for one night of free rental. Just remember to return the DVD before 9 p.m. the next day and you won't have to pay for the movie.

2. Library: We can't go on enough about all the freebies you can get from the library, one of which are the DVDs you can borrow for free. You can even borrow a couple at a time, although there usually is a limit. Libraries also generally organize free movie nights for patrons to attend.

3. Movie nights in the city: Check to see what kind of events are going on in your city — there are usually plenty of free movie nights being held. Some places to check out include parks and museums.

4. Swap meets: Find swap meets in your city and you may be able to swap items for DVDs you're hoping to watch.

5. 'Borrow' a friend or family member's Netflix login: You can watch movies and shows on the same Netflix account on up to six devices, so if someone you know doesn't mind sharing their account, you'll be able to stream movies from Netflix for free!

6. Amazon Prime: If you already have Amazon Prime, there is a wide selection of movies you can stream online for free. But keep in mind that not all movies are free. You can easily filter through the free movies by first going to the Amazon instant video page, clicking on the movies category, then sorting the movies by price from low to high. The ones that show up first are the movies you can stream without paying a cent.

7. Hulu: You'll find hundreds of free movies on Hulu, although they will be in standard-definition resolution. You'll have to pay a bit more to watch the HD versions.

8. Craigslist free section: There is a free-stuff section on Craigslist for every city, so check it out every once in a while to see if anyone is giving away DVDs.

9. SwapADVD: You can swap DVDs with someone else online for free on SwapADVD.com. There are apparently 262,186 movies to choose from. All you need to do is list the DVD you have, then mail it out to a club member who requests it. The DVDs you request will be sent to you for free. You won't have to worry about late fees and hidden charges.

10. Crackle: Like Hulu, Crackle is another great place to watch movies online. You'll have to watch commercials and the movies are in standard definition, but you'll have quite a big selection to choose from. Another negative is that movies are only available for a period of time.

11. Free movie screenings: You can actually watch movie screenings for free before the movies are even released to the public. All you need to do is check out sites like Gofobo and Film Metro. Wise Bread has more detailed instructions on how to watch free screenings.

It Looks Like Fans Are Going To Get The 'Community' Movie They've Always Wanted

$
0
0

communityIf you're not in the know, the big running gag on NBC's cult phenomenon "Community" has been to do six seasons of the show followed by a movie.

It's often illuminated on social media as #sixseasonsandamovie.

Since the news of the show's revival on Yahoo, it looks like fans may actually get that movie, too.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures Television president of programming and production Zack Van Amburg spoke openly about the show's potential future. When asked about doing a seventh season, he said the only next logical step would be to make a film.

"There's no way we're not making the movie now!" said Van Amburg. "I think once we make the movie, let's look up and decide how much more Community the world wants. We promised six seasons and a movie, how much more do you want?! [Laughs.] … I'd be lying if I told you that we have not had some very early and preliminary conversations that are very exciting about what a potential movie could be and who might direct it. It's early but it's completely in our thought process."

For anyone who doesn't watch "Community," the running gag of "six seasons and a movie" was first introduced at the end of season 2, a time when "Community" wasn't really sure if it was going to get renewal for a third season amid poor ratings.

Abed (Danny Pudi) shouts out the phrase after Jeff (Joel McHale) tells him another NBC show “The Cape” will only last a few weeks. (It made it to nine weeks before the finale aired online.)

The phrase slowly become fan’s battle cry when ever it was in danger of cancellation or its season premiere was pushed back by the network.

It's not the first time we've heard talk about a "Community" movie.

Creator Dan Harmon told Hitfix they would have to make the movie a reality even if he had to make the film “out of clay and duct tape.”

“If they do a sixth season, I have to participate. And having done that, if the movie has to be made out of clay and duct tape in my basement, then that’s how the movie will be made, because there has to be closure. The title of the book about the show is not “’Community,’ An Interesting Journey into a Show No One Ever Watched.” The title of the book is obviously going to be, “Six Seasons and a Movie.” So it’s already over. Sometimes our hands are just tied up in fate.”

Previously, TV Guide reported “Fast and Furious” director Justin Lin was considered to direct the film.

“Community” will air 13 episodes on Yahoo starting in the fall.

"Better Call Saul!" might be calling up Bryan Cranston's Walter White character for a cameo in the upcoming "Breaking Bad" spinoff show.

Executive producer Peter Gould says the show's timeline will indeed shift between decades, according to Page Six.

“One of the great things about having a time line which is flexible is that perhaps some of it takes place before ‘Breaking Bad,’ during ‘Breaking Bad,’ and after ‘Breaking Bad'. That gives us the ability to bring back characters that were killed on ‘Breaking Bad,’ ” said Gould.

This confirms what star Bob Odenkirk told us last fall when he said he wanted to see what happened before and after "Breaking Bad."

Since the show will be filming in Albuquerque, Odenkirk teased a few familiar faces including Mike (Jonathan Banks) and Huell (Lavell Crawford) could return.

In addition, it leaves room for possible cameos by Bryan Cranston (Walter White) or Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkman).breaking bad saul walter white

Here's what Odenkirk had to say to us back in November:

"I don’t know whether their characters [Mike and Huell] matter that much or if we just need to hire you know Bryan (Cranston) and Aaron (Paul) to walk behind me at the golf course or walk across the street when I’m driving my car around town. I don’t know if they’ll engage with the story, but they could."

"Better Call Saul" has already been renewed for a second season and will premiere on AMC next year.

Grand Theft Auto M

When you play a video game, you're transported into an alternate reality where you can fly or hit boxes for coins or even steal cars, die, and then get resurrected with the tap of a button.

But a couple of filmmakers in Madrid have brought the alternate reality of video games into the real world.

The team at Zapruder Pictures has meticulously re-created every scene from the "Grand Theft Auto V" trailer.

Every. Single. Scene.

(You can see how they did it in this behind-the-scenes video, but it's in Spanish.)

According to the filmmakers' site, they worked on the video for months, and shot in 33 different locations.

And it's very cool. Even Rockstar Games, the developer behind "Grand Theft Auto," thinks so:

"Grand Theft Auto V" was a huge hit for the company. It generated around $1 billion in three days. The game will be released for current-gen consoles in the fall.

Check out how meticulously the scenes were remade:

Of course, they enlisted the help of some fancy special effects to make some of the scenes look just like the game.

This isn't the first time Zapruder Pictures has dabbled in video game remakes. They have a "Call of Duty" short film, as well as one based on the game "Max Payne."
