A&E Suspends 'Duck Dynasty' Star After Comments Comparing Being Gay To Bestiality

Phil Robertson Duck Dynasty

"Duck Dynasty" patriarch Phil Robertson has been suspended by A&E after making anti-gay remarks in a bombshell new interview with GQ magazine.

In the interview, Robertson compared being gay to bestiality and terrorism, saying he's a "bible thumper" who thinks it's a "sin" and "not logical" to be gay.

Needless to say, people were furious and GLAAD immediately called for the network to take action: "Phil's decision to push vile and extreme stereotypes is a stain on A&E and his sponsors who now need to reexamine their ties to someone with such public disdain for LGBT people and families."

Looks like they got their wish.

A&E announced late Wednesday night that they have placed Phil Robertson on "indefinite hiatus" following his controversial remarks.

"We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson's comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series 'Duck Dynasty,'" A&E said in a statement. "His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community. The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely."

Robertson released a statement of his own Wednesday following the backlash, explaining: "I myself am a product of the '60s; I centered my life around sex, drugs and rock and roll until I hit rock bottom and accepted Jesus as my Savior. My mission today is to go forth and tell people about why I follow Christ and also what the Bible teaches, and part of that teaching is that women and men are meant to be together. However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me."

But alas, looks like Robertson can kiss that $200,000 an episode paycheck goodbye "indefinitely."

The 12 Worst-Reviewed Movies Of 2013

$

elizabeth banks movie 43While studios brought us gems like "Gravity" and "The Way Way Back" this year, there were also a lot of duds.

From silly car chases to celebrity-filled mashups, we've compiled the worst-reviewed movies of the year on film critic site Rotten Tomatoes.

We've only included wide releases on the list so Ja Rule's movie "I'm in Love with a Church Girl" (6%) and "CBGB" (9%) with Alan Rickman aren't here.

"R.I.P.D." just missed making it on this list (13%).

That said, here are the films critics and audiences hated most.

12. "After Earth" — 11%

Worldwide gross: $243.8 million

Will Smith's talent is wasted as a monotone drone as he steps out of the spotlight to convince you his son Jaden Smith can handle a lead role. Still, the movie managed to do really well overseas ($183 million) so as not to bomb.

Here's our breakdown of everything wrong with this film.

(Source: Rotten Tomatoes)

11. "A Haunted House" — 10%

Worldwide gross: $60 million

The film was a big success at theaters (made on a $2.5 million budget), but few critics liked Marion Wayan's attempt to rival the "Scary Movie" franchise.

Toronto Star:

"A movie that offends every moral sensibility but delivers few comedic rewards."

(Source: Rotten Tomatoes)

10. "Runner, Runner" — 9%

Worldwide gross: $62.7 million

A Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake movie sounded kind of promising: a down-on-his-luck college student turning to online gambling to pay his debts. Instead, it ended up being a big let down. Hopefully, not a sign of things to come from Batfleck.

Boston Globe:

"It's not that "Runner Runner" is predictable. It's that you don't care, either about the characters or what happens to them."

New York Forced Me To Create This Four-Tier System For Categorizing Movies

movie audeince 3D glasses

I love the movies. And I'd much rather watch them at the theatre, on a giant screen, than on my laptop or the tele.

But watching movies in New York, especially Manhattan, can be outrageously expensive. And not every movie deserves the $14 price tag.

So, New York forced me to created a four tier movie watching system.

The first tier: "The $14 movie"

This is the sort of movie that you're willing to spend $14 for. Typically this should have a great cast, a compelling storyline, a director you love, or something you know will be entertaining and only fun on a giant screen. For instance I don't regret paying $14 to watch 12 Years A Slave, Prisoners, (more for Gravity because I watched it in IMAX 3D), World War Z, Fruitvale Station or Star Trek: Into Darkness. But I do regret paying that much to watch The Purge, Thor 2, Oblivion, The Grandmaster, and The Great Gatsby. This is a pretty universal tier, most people I know will say "meh, that's not a theater movie, I'll rent it."

If you're in Manhattan but really committed to the movie-going experience, you can save some cash by taking a short train ride over to Williamsburg Cinemas which asks for a more reasonable $8. Some AMC Loews theaters also offer $8 tickets for morning shows.

The second tier: "The $3-$6 movie"

These are the movies that you're willing to rent on iTunes or Amazon, the price can vary depending on whether its HD or SD. Second tier movies are those that you want to watch but can 1. Wait a couple of weeks till it's available to stream online and 2. You don't want the $14 price tag.

I shelled out $14 for Elysium for instance, but it would probably have made a good iTunes movie. Other great iTunes movies/documentaries I saw this year include Mud, Blackfish.

The third tier: "The Netflix movie"

Third tier movies are ones that aren't quite free, since you pay $8 for streaming, and an additional $8 for DVDs, but are close to it. These are also movies that you'll have to wait a bit longer to see but that you don't care about enough to seek it out at the movies or rent as a stand alone through providers like iTunes or Amazon.

The fourth tier: "The airplane movie"

Finally, there are movies that you should only have to endure if you're subjected to terrible in-flight programming on an unbearably long flight, when you have no movies on your laptop or smartphone or tablet, and no books or magazines to distract you, and crying babies all around to keep you awake. I've watched some real rotters on long flights to India including Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Red Riding Hood, Sinister, and 6 Souls. But when you've been on a flight for eight hours and you're not even half way home, your brain is like mulch anyway.

Of course there could be a fifth tier that's reserved for movies that should never have been made at all.

Bobby Jindal Slams Suspension Of 'Duck Dynasty' Star Phil Robertson

Phil Robertson Duck Dynasty

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal has released a statement on A&E's decision to suspend "Duck Dynasty" star Phil Robertson over anti-gay comments he made in an interview with GQ magazine.

In the statement, Jindal said it was "messed up" that singer Miley Cyrus faced no consequences from her wild MTV Video Awards performance earlier this year, but that Robertson has paid a price for his comments.

Here's Jindal's full statement:

"Phil Robertson and his family are great citizens of the State of Louisiana. The politically correct crowd is tolerant of all viewpoints, except those they disagree with. I don’t agree with quite a bit of stuff I read in magazine interviews or see on TV. In fact, come to think of it, I find a good bit of it offensive. But I also acknowledge that this is a free country and everyone is entitled to express their views. In fact, I remember when TV networks believed in the First Amendment. It is a messed up situation when Miley Cyrus gets a laugh, and Phil Robertson gets suspended."

It should be noted that A&E is a private company and can do whatever it wants with respect to business decisions. This is not a First Amendment issue.

In the GQ interview, Robertson compared being gay to bestiality, and he put gay people in the same category as terrorists.

Ahead of a meeting with tech CEOs including Reed Hastings and Marissa Mayer to discuss NSA surveillance, Obama made an aside about whether the Netflix CEO brought along advanced copies of "House of Cards" season 2.

Hastings took the opportunity to casually joke that Obama should make a cameo on the Emmy-winning series.

Though Obama didn't respond, he instead commented how he wished DC worked more like the fictional series.

“I wish things were that ruthlessly efficient,” said Obama. “It’s true. It’s like Kevin Spacey, man this guy’s getting a lot of stuff done.”

Sorry, Bobby Jindal, There's No First Amendment Right To Star In A Reality Show

Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-La.) is very upset about the indefinite suspension of Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson.

In case you haven't heard, Robertson was fired after a GQ interview in which, among other offenses, he compared homosexuality to bestiality and described Shintoism as a religion that leads to murder.

Robertson also offered this insight:

It seems like, to me, a vagina — as a man — would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.

Jindal said this about the firing:

This is a free country and everyone is entitled to express their views.  In fact, I remember when TV networks believed in the First Amendment.

As a reminder to the governor, no clause in the First Amendment establishes a right to star in a reality show on A&E regardless of what you say to GQ about vaginas and anuses:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Jindal is a graduate of Brown University and a Rhodes Scholar. Until about the last 18 months, he was frequently discussed as one of the brightest policy minds in the Republican Party.

He also, apparently, thinks A&E is part of Congress.

Sarah Palin Defends 'Duck Dynasty' Star's Anti-Gay Remarks In Heated Facebook Post

Sarah Palin Duck Dynasty

While many were offended by "Duck Dynasty" patriarch Phil Robertson's anti-gay comments in a bombshell new GQ interview leading A&E to suspend him from the show, the conservative reality TV star still has at least one big fan in Sarah Palin.

The politician has come out in defense of Robertson, expressing her support via Twitter and Facebook following Wednesday's backlash:

Free speech is an endangered species. Those “intolerants” hatin’ and taking on the Duck Dynasty patriarch for voicing his personal opinion are taking on all of us.

Palin's point of view has clearly struck a chord with "Duck Dynasty" fans, who have "liked" the comment 212,000 times, shared it 31,000 times, and left nearly 13,000 comments on her Facebook page.

Most comments are in support of Palin and Robertson:

Sarah Palin Facebook Comments On Duck Dynasty

Palin and Robertson first bonded during an NRA convention over the summer. Most recently, the two spent time together when Palin's "Good Tidings and Great Joy: Protecting the Heart of Christmas" book tour stopped at the Robertson's hometown in Louisiana earlier this month.

Palin has even commended Phil Robertson's open view against abortion.

"Phil Robertson offered some of their refreshing trademark plainspoken talk that so many crave from our leaders in Washington," Palin wrote in a Facebook photo caption on Aug. 21. "Speaking on the issue of the sanctity of life, Phil reminds us that all life is God-given, no matter how small or how special."

Palin also argued that Washington, D.C., should be more like the "Duck Dynasty" family.

"To our GOP leaders in Washington, especially—this is what Americans desire and deserve; we're not rooting for your social truces. As Phil so rightly asks, 'What in the world has happened to us? Kudos to these Duck dudes for speaking their minds, and for their boldness in living the American dream of LIFE, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness—reminding us all that it's only with freedom that anything is possible."

Now 'Duck Dynasty' Star Phil Robertson Says Black People Were 'Happy' In Pre-Civil Rights South

Duck Dynasty

That now famous GQ interview in which "Duck Dynasty" patriarch Phil Robertson compared being gay to bestiality is a real doozy.

Not only did the reality star say anti-gay remarks that led to his suspension from A&E, but turns out he also said a little too much on the topic of racism.

When asked about whether he witnessed bigotry or racism against black people growing up in the pre-Civil-Rights South, the 67-year-old Louisiana native told the magazine:

“I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once. Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I’m with the blacks, because we’re white trash. We’re going across the field.... They’re singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, ‘I tell you what: These doggone white people’—not a word!... Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues.”

Robertson was suspended from A&E yesterday after already making remarks comparing gay people to terrorists and bestiality.

Robertson issued a statement trying to explain his remarks, but it was too late:

"I myself am a product of the '60s; I centered my life around sex, drugs and rock and roll until I hit rock bottom and accepted Jesus as my Savior. My mission today is to go forth and tell people about why I follow Christ and also what the bible teaches, and part of that teaching is that women and men are meant to be together. However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other."

Atari E.T. video game

Microsoft is about to tackle a gamer urban legend.

According to the lore, Atari released a game based on "E.T.: The Extraterrestrial" in the early 80s that was so incredibly terrible that the company was stuck with millions of unsellable copies. So many in fact that the company supposedly got rid of them by dumping truckloads of cartridges into a landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico.

Today, Microsoft's Xbox division announced an original documentary series that will focus on the "extraordinary events and characters that have given rise to the digital age" and in the first episode, the Xbox film team will document an excavation of the supposed site of the E.T. cartridges. It will also explore how the urban legend fits into the rise and fall of Atari as a whole.

Shooting for the series begins in January and it will stream exclusively on Xbox One and Xbox 360 later in 2014.

With the "Anchorman" sequel out this week, Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, David Koechner, and Paul Rudd stopped by "The Daily Show" to discuss their new film.

Except they did anything but that.

Stewart asked Carell to dish on some of his castmates for viewers as they sat behind him the entire time.

Things got pretty heated toward the end when Ferrell started eating from a plate that Stewart suggested was only meant for Carell — who's visit was a bit of a homecoming for the former "Daily Show" correspondent.

It escalated pretty quickly, culminating in the cast handing out random items from Stewart's green screen room to audience members.

Brandon McGrawCherilyn McGraw was ecstatic when she won a free trip to Australia after competing in a game on "Ellen" last January.

But McGraw's dream vacation turned into a nightmare after her husband, Gunnery Sgt. Brandon McGraw, 33, died in a parachute accident last weekend after the couple went skydiving out of the same plane.

Cherilyn did a tandem jump, but Brandon, being a marine, was experienced and followed by jumping solo.

"Approximately 300 feet from the ground, Brandon's parachute suddenly caused him to turn radically right and left and he crashed to the ground.  He was pronounced dead at the scene," an employee from the skydiving school told TMZ.

Capt. Barry Morris with Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command told WCTI that McGraw was a "well-trained free-faller."

Cherilyn posted a message on Facebook with photos inside the plane before the jump, saying, "My hero. My angel.  These are truly such symbolic photos.  He was happy and doing what he loved."

DeGeneres released the following statement to Us Weekly on Thursday:  "I've been speaking with Cherilyn. And my staff has been in touch with her as well. She's asked us to help keep this private as she tries to deal with this unimaginable tragedy. I hope everyone respects that."

There are a number of casualties after a balcony collapsed during a packed performance at London's Apollo Theatre.

London fire officials say they've treated 81 "walking wounded" and that seven people who were more seriously injured have been taken to hospitals. All those who were trapped have been freed.

The balcony collapsed around 8:15 p.m. during a sold-out performance of "The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Nighttime." The Soho venue seats 775 people.

Witnesses told BBC that the ceiling in the theater crumpled and caved in. Onewitness said there was "complete chaos" in the theater after the collapse, telling Sky News: "At first we thought it was part of the show. Then I got hit on the head."

Lyndsey Scott is a gorgeous model who has walked in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

But growing up, she says she was often bullied for her "awkward" appearance.

Scott responded to a Quora thread asking: "What does it feel like to go from physically unattractive to physically attractive?"

Scott, who agreed to share her answer with us, says that people didn't give her a chance when she was a bespectacled and skinny adolescent.

Here are some photos of her from that time:

lyndsey scott

lyndsey scott

By the time she entered her 20s, Scott began to look like the gorgeous model she is today.

Of course, there are perks.

"People offer me a lot more freebies,  I make money off of my looks through modeling, strangers talk to me more often, more people listen to me and laugh at my jokes, and I even have the occasional suitor," Scott writes.

But her new appearance had its downsides.

"Would-be catcallers will sometimes skip the compliments and just call me a bitch as I walk by, some women (although very few) are very catty to me from the get-go, and many people are shocked to find out that I'm anything other than an airhead...that I was a computer science major and that I program iOS apps, for example," she says.

Ultimately, Scott acknowledges that she feels "extremely lucky to have been granted this new super-power."

But it also haunts her.

"I have to wonder, why didn't they like me then when I'm still the same person now?  Why do they like me now?  How do I know that they like me now?  Does anyone actually really even like me now?" she asks.

Here's a photo of Scott today:

The mad scientists at iFixIt have given the Steam Machine the same treatment they give all the latest gadgets — and surgically dissected it for your viewing pleasure.

The Steam Machine is the highly anticipated console/PC system from the gaming masterminds at Valve, the software house responsibly for a number of hugely popular titles, perhaps most notably the Half-Life franchise. It runs SteamOS, an open-source Linux-based operating system, and will support loads of games in the Steam catalog. (And still more are, obviously, on the way.)

Given the open source nature of the OS and the ease with which users can get inside the box and re-jigger its components to their hearts' content, the Steam Machine looks to be a hacker's dream come true.

First of all, the packaging is awesome.

The Steam Machine is an understated yet elegant-looking device.

5 Actors Rumored To Be Playing Villains In The 'Batman / Superman' Movie

$
0

lex luthor

Since the Wonder Woman casting news earlier this month, there have been a lot of names thrown around for "Batman/Superman" movie villain.

The latest one is that Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to play Lex Luthor— one of the Man of Steel's main rivals.

Luthor isn't confirmed as the main villain in the sequel yet — though hints in the first film make his entrance seemingly inevitable.

Though Phoenix looks like a frontrunner, he's not the only person rumored for the part.

Luthor also isn't the only antagonist people are speculating about.

We wouldn't be surprised if there was another villain also introduced in the sequel.

Joaquin Phoenix as Lex Luthor

Let's start with the obvious.

Variety broke the news saying Warner Bros. is looking at the Academy Award winner after his performance in "Her."

Not convinced he could play the head of LexCorp? We weren't at first either as this ubiquitous interview with David Letterman came to mind, but then we remembered him as treacherousCommodus in "Gladiator."

We can get behind this.

Jason Mamoa as a villain (or a good guy?)

The former "Game of Thrones" star's name has been thrown around for an unspecified role.

Rumors have him pegged for a few roles— Superman nemesis Doomsday (who has appeared as a villain for both the Bat and Man of Steel in the past, sometimestogether) — or a possible ally in the Martian Manhunter.

However, with casting of Wonder Woman and rumors of the Flash making an appearance, it seems a little too soon to be throwing this many heroes into the mix.

Our take: Doomsday seems more logical. And it appears from an extra found on the "Man of Steel" Blu-ray— a Kryptonian sequence translated to "Beware Bertron’s curse, for he is named Doomsday" — that Warner Bros. could introduce him in the future.

Callan Mulvey as an unnamed villain

Again Variety hinted the "Zero Dark Thirty" actor was being looked at to play a nemesis for the Batman / Superman duo.

Whether or not that villain is Lex, Mulvey has the appeal of a younger, brash hot shot Luthor looks wise. If Warners is planning to give the character an older classic feel, than Phoenix makes much more sense.

Duck Dynasty Family Releases Statement On Suspension Of Phil Robertson

Duck Dynasty

The Robertson Family — the family featured on the show Duck Dynasty whose main member was suspended indefinitely this week after comments made about gays in GQ magazine — issued the following statement last night.

From the Duck Commander website:

We want to thank all of you for your prayers and support. The family has spent much time in prayer since learning of A&E's decision. We want you to know that first and foremost we are a family rooted in our faith in God and our belief that the Bible is His word. While some of Phil’s unfiltered comments to the reporter were coarse, his beliefs are grounded in the teachings of the Bible. Phil is a Godly man who follows what the Bible says are the greatest commandments: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart” and “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Phil would never incite or encourage hate.We are disappointed that Phil has been placed on hiatus for expressing his faith, which is his constitutionally protected right. We have had a successful working relationship with A&E but, as a family, we cannot imagine the show going forward without our patriarch at the helm. We are in discussions with A&E to see what that means for the future of Duck Dynasty. Again, thank you for your continued support of our family.
