Taylor Swift Leaves $500 Tip On $800 Meal At Philly Restaurant

Justin Bieber may be peeing in restaurant kitchen corners, but Taylor Swift is leaving better impressions where she dines.

The 23-year-old pop star left a whopping $500 tip on an $800 bill at Ralph’s Italian Restauran following a Philadelphia concert stop last week.

Swift — who ordered the chicken parmesan, if you must know — treated 18 members of her tour crew, including opening singers Austin Mahone and Ed Sheeran, to the Italian meal.

She also took pictures with the restaurant staff and gave the chef two tickets to her concert for the following night.

Ralph's restaurant posted the below photo to their Facebook page following the encounter.

"Taylor Swift after her show, along with opening acts Ed Sheeran and Austin Mahone and the late night Ralph's staff. From her graciousness upon arrival for us staying open, to the extremely generous tip before leaving, she was a pleasure to have dine with us! Probably the biggest celebrity to visit Ralph's in recent memory!"

The dinner was held on the same night Swift learned she was nominated for an MTV Video Music Award, and the group celebrated by taking the above photo spelling out V-M-A with their hands.

Hopefully Kanye West won't rip an award out them this year.

10 Former Contestants Say 'American Idol' Is Racist, Sue For $25 Million Each

Ten former Idol hopefuls have sued the show for booting them from the competition, allegedly because of their race, TMZ reported.

The ex-contestants' lawyer James Freeman submitted a letter in January to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission asking for permission to sue Idol for allegedly being racist.

Freeman says the show probed these 10 black contestants' histories for arrest records and then allegedly used the information to disqualify them. Even worse, Freeman purports the show never looked into white contestants' pasts.

Freeman also says none of the contestants' arrests ever ended with charges.

Corey Clark from Season 2 was disqualified due to misdemeanor battery charges, the Huffington Post points out. Other African-American contestants were reportedly let go for drunk driving and posing nude. NBC News also reported that the show declared one white contestant, Joanna Pacitti, ineligible because of her ties to Fremantle Media, one of Idol's producers.

Freeman claims that since the contestants were ostensibly seeking employment with the show, producers violated California employment law by asking about their arrest records. Also, he says that the show used this information to humiliate the black contestants on national TV and perpetuate "destructive stereotypes," TMZ reported in an earlier article.

Idol honcho Nigel Lythgoe told TMZ he was "shocked" by the "ridiculous" allegations and that Fox treats everyone the same regardless of race, gender, or religion.

Each plaintiff seeks $25 million, minimum, in damages.

'Wolverine' Reviews: The Best Superhero Film Of The Summer

$
0
0

the wolverine hugh jackman"The Wolverine" claws into theaters Friday with Hugh Jackman reprising his role as Logan for the sixth time.

In a summer that felt so overloaded with one big-budget movie after another week in and week out, it would be easy for James Mangold's ("3:10 to Yuma," "Walk the Line") Wolverine film to get lost among the bigger superheroes.

It also felt easy to write off after 2009's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" film. (The movie did well at the box-office, but it's no secret it didn't sit well with fans.)

However, don't count this one out. It sounds like Jackman's return to theaters is a must-see.

IGN is calling it "The Wolverine movie we've always wanted," while Salon goes even bolder saying it's the superhero film of the summer.

What's all the fuss over?

Here's what the critics are saying about the film.

First and foremost, this is not a sequel to 2009's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."

Salon:

“'The Wolverine' comes close to being a low-key character reboot, and along the way delivers a solid, popcorn-flavored action-adventure that should delight genre fans, as well as admirers of Jackman’s alarmingly muscled physique."

The Hollywood Reporter (THR):

"Not only does it distance itself from the critically mauled X-Men Origins: Wolverine, dropping the "X-Men" from the title frees Mangold from many of the constraints of sequel-making and prevents the scattered focus that would accompany a multimutant world."

Jackman is amazing.

IGN:

"Jackman once again goes full in, embracing the Logan that fans first fell in love with in the pages of the X-Men. The result is, finally, the Wolverine movie we've always wanted."

Associated Press (AP):

"Whether hoofing it in a Broadway musical or crooning as Jean Valjean in ‘‘Les Miserables,’’ that charisma makes him always worth watching."

viper the wolverineDon't expect much from the rest of the cast.

AP:

"Svetlana Khodchenkova, as Viper, is supposed to be villainous but comes across as only vampy; she recalls Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy in ‘‘Batman & Robin,’’ only less interesting."

The film has a train fight scene to end all train-fight scenes.

THR:

"Mangold uses the occasion to give a distinctly Japanese twist to the tried-and-true battle-atop-a-speeding-train -- in this case, a bullet train -- hurtling along at 300 miles per hour. It’s a bravura heart-in-mouth sequence, expertly staged, and there’s plenty more goring and slashing where that came from."

Entertainment Weekly (EW):

"By now, we've all seen so many beat-downs atop locomotives that they've become numbingly similar. But the one in The Wolverine is so frantic and adrenalized (not to mention the only part of the film that takes advantage of 3-D) that the familiar becomes new again."

AP:

"James Mangold sets one terrific action scene — the film’s best — on a speeding bullet train, making great use of those claws."

Like all superhero films, this one has its problems, but they're mostly near the film's end:

IGN:

"A perhaps too cartoonish villain emerges during the finale, as does some CGI action that is more over the top than the rest of the film that precedes it."

NY Daily News:

"The rest of the film becomes standard slice-and-dice, all the way to the ridiculous ending involving a baddie in adamantium armor."

Variety:

"It’s still full of corny dialogue (you know, those punchy one-liners conceived to fit in tiny talk bubbles above the characters’ heads)."

USA Today:

"Director James Mangold has fashioned a fairly engrossing, if occasionally convoluted, tale based on the  Marvel Comics figure. But an extended battle meant as a climactic clash grows tedious."

Overall, everyone says it's good.

THR:

"Thirteen years after his mutant debut in Bryan Singer’s terrific X-Men, Jackman, also a producer here, owns the Wolverine character. The charismatic Aussie has added some martial arts moves to his character’s slice-and-dice repertoire, is buffer than ever and shows no sign of flagging."

IGN:

"In this age when superhero movies are increasingly concerned with universe-building, it's refreshing to get a film like The Wolverine that mostly stands alone."

Salon:

"'The Wolverine' is the cleanest, least pretentious and most satisfying superhero movie of the summer."

EW:

"While it's definitely a more entertaining and far deeper film than the last Wolverine outing, it still falls short of the top tier of Marvel tentpoles like the fizzy Iron Man and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man."

Judge Extends Amanda Bynes Psych Hold As Parents Seek Conservatorship

Amanda Bynes Wig In Court

Amanda Bynes was hospitalized on a 5150 psychiatric hold earlier this week after starting a fire in a random person's driveway, and now a judge has ruled that Bynes must stay in the hospital for another two weeks.

"Doctors are arguing that they need the two weeks to properly diagnose Amanda," reports TMZ, "and that releasing her could pose a danger to herself and others."

Medical professionals at the psychiatric hospital say Bynes is showing signs of schizophrenia — which could mean a conservatorship for the former Nickelodeon star.

"Amanda's parents will be in court this morning with their attorney, asking the judge to create a temporary conservatorship for their 27-year-old daughter," according to TMZ.

The site notes that in order to get a Britney Spears-like conservatorship, Bynes' parents must prove a few points to the judge:

1) Amanda does not have the ability to provide for her own physical health  along with food, clothing and shelter.

2) Amanda cannot make sound financial judgements

4) There are no realistic alternatives to a conservatorship

They have solid arguments for all. A decision will be reached today.

Lea Michele Cory Monteith Ryan Murphy

After Cory Monteith died from an overdose of heroin and alcohol earlier this month, his "Glee" family finally came together Thursday to remember their beloved co-star.

20th Century Fox TV released the below statement on Monteith's memorial service:

Today, Ryan Murphy and Lea Michele gathered the cast, crew and producers of Glee, along with colleagues from the network and studio, to share memories and music in an emotional celebration of the life of Cory Monteith. We thank the public for their continued outpouring of love and support as we grieve our friend and colleague during this difficult time.

More than 150 mourners attended the event on the Paramount studio lot, each reportedly wearing a black ribbon in Monteith’s honor.

After the ceremony,  co-star Chris Colfer tweetedI'll never forget all the laughs we shared or the faces we made after awkward interview questions. Love and miss you, buddy."

Monteith's co-star and girlfriend, Lea Michele, has only released a brief statement thanking fans for their support and saying she is "grieving alongside" Monteith's family.

Fox announced that "Glee" will delay their season five premiere in the wake of the young actor’s death.

Show creator Ryan Murphy has also said that the third episode of the upcoming will deal with the death of Finn Hudson, Monteith’s character.

“Glee” writers will reportedly then take a hiatus to determine how to best continue with the remainder of the season's plot line.

"Murphy says that Michele was consulted on all decisions, and producers gave her the opportunity to proceed as she wanted," reports GossipCop. "The actress let the 'Glee' team know that she’ll be back and working as soon as production begins."

Apple Is Too Rich To Care If It Has To Pay $500 Million For Book Price Fixing Scandal (AAPL)

steve jobs book copy

Apple's damages in the ebook price fixing scandal— in which a federal judge ruled that Apple and Steve Jobs personally were the central conspirators in a scheme with publishers to raise prices by as much as 50% across virtually all electronic books — could be as much as $500 million, according to Paid Content and GigaOm.

Apple won't care.

It has $146 billion in cash on its balance sheet.

The $500 million sum is almost ironic — it includes triple damages for consumer injury. The tripling is supposed to deter companies from fixing prices by making it very expensive if they get caught. But the tech business is so much bigger than the book business that even triple damages aren't a deterrent.

That diminutive penalty also explains why all the other publishers settled the case for a mere $166 million collectively, and why Apple chose to fight on. Its financial risk was not significant to give up the chance of winning.

(Apple may also have believed it had a case. After all, it can argue that all it did was provide greater access to ebooks for more customers at a price that was above Amazon's $9.99 setting. Neither publishers nor readers were forced to take the deal.)

GigaOm made this handy chart that shows how Apple's damages might be calculated:

Amanda Bynes' Parents Want Conservatorship After She Spent $1.2 Of Her $4 Million In 'Very Short Time'

$

Amanda BynesAmanda Bynes' parents appeared before an L.A. judge Friday morning seeking a conservatorship over their 27-year-old daughter, who is currently hospitalized on a 5150 psychiatric hold.

The judge temporarily denied the conservatorship until he has a one-on-one with Bynes and talks to her doctors.

The former Nickelodeon star's parents are looking to control their daughter's finances after she has reportedly spent a huge amount of money in a very short amount of time.

According to legal docs obtained by TMZ, Bynes had $4 million in the bank and recently spent $1.2 million, in addition to two $100,000 withdrawals in June and then July.

Bynes' parents have no idea where she spent the money, but say they believe she spends "a substantial amount" for marijuana and other illegal substances.

In the docs, they say Amanda has become "extremely paranoid about being watched," covering smoke alarms with towels and taping windows shut to prevent cameras from shooting her.

The docs continue that Bynes has "profound issues with her body image" and is "obsessed with the fact that she (and others) are ugly" -- which anyone who follows her Twitter account can attest to.

Doctors suspect Bynes may be schizophrenic. Her parents agree that she isn't in touch with reality.

When they asked her how she arrived from New York to Los Angeles last week, the former child star reportedly told her parents she "cabbed it." They also believe she is now homeless.

But as her parents are fighting for control, Bynes is aggressively seeking freedom as her lawyer just filed legal docs asking for an emergency hearing to free her from the psych ward.

Stay tuned.

I Just Bought A Newspaper!

$
0
0

My copy of the Inquirer & Mirror

Last night, I did something I very rarely do: I bought a newspaper.

I very rarely buy newspapers because I very rarely have a need for them: I generally can find all the news and information I want for free online. Also, newspapers leave stacks of paper all over my house that I have to dispose of later and feel bad about wasting. So, there's actually a good reason NOT to buy newspapers.

So, why did I buy a newspaper last night?

Because there was some news in the newspaper that I wanted that wasn't available online for free.

Specifically, the newspaper had an article in it that described what had happened at a meeting held earlier this week that will determine the future of Nantucket Island. The meeting was about whether the Nantucket Conservation Commission will allow some homeowners to build a seawall to save their houses from rapid bluff erosion. I went to half of the "ConCom" meeting, and wrote about it here, but I wasn't able to attend the second half. So I needed someone to tell me what I had missed. I knew the local Nantucket newspaper, the Inquirer and Mirror, would do exactly that. I knew no other publication would do that, given that there's not much news competition on this island. I also knew the Inquirer and Mirror wasn't dumb enough to give me the information I wanted for free. So I rushed down to the grocery store in the rain and bought a copy.

As I had hoped, the Inquirer and Mirror told me all about the meeting I had missed half of.

That article alone was worth the $1.50 I had to pay for the paper. That price, by the way, was about half of what the same store charges for a blueberry muffin.

But there were other articles I enjoyed reading in the paper, too, none of which I could have found anywhere else. For example, I learned that a couple of swimmers had gotten caught in a current at a beach where my family swims and then been whisked out to sea (the swimmers were rescued, thankfully, which the paper also told me about.) And I learned that they are going to put a STOP sign at the intersection of Orange Street and Union Street, which is excellent news (it's high time they did that). And so on.

In short, I was extremely happy with my newspaper purchase, which delivered a lot more than $1.50 of value to me.

And that got me thinking about the much-ballyhooed problems and challenges in the news industry and how unbelievably boneheaded so many newspaper companies have been.

The main problem in the news industry, of course, is not that there isn't enough news coverage (a common complaint that newspaper people invoke to scare you into thinking that if their jobs and salaries aren't saved the world will go to hell in a handbasket).

The problem in the news industry, with many popular areas of coverage, is there is way too much news coverage.

There is so much news coverage, in fact--so many news organizations covering the same stories--that news companies have to give their news away for free (because, although journalism schools won't tell you this, the more there is of something, the less it is worth--supply and demand matters in this market, too).

It's not surprising that those engaged in this kind of news coverage will say anything to try to protect their jobs. But the fact that some of these commodity-coverage jobs are threatened isn't even remotely a threat to society. They aren't all threatened. We do need some news about, say, the White House . But if the number of news organizations that can afford White House correspondents gets cut in half, society will be just fine. We'll still have more news about the White House available for free all in real time than we could ever possibly consume.

The other trouble in the news industry is that, for the past 20 years, many news organizations haven't even charged for news coverage that there wasn't too much of--stuff that people would have paid for.

What news coverage is that?

News that other news organizations aren't covering.

The only way I could think of to find out what happened at that Nantucket Conservation Committee meeting was to buy the only newspaper that covered it--a newspaper that, wisely, did not also publish the article online for free. The newspaper did a good job covering the meeting, so I was happy to pay them for their effort.

The Nantucket paper, the Inquirer and Mirror, has always charged for its content, online and off. The boneheadedness that has crippled the rest of the newspaper industry, in other words, has not found its way onto this island.

In these two observations, by the way, lie the secrets to building a happy, healthy, and vibrant news industry of the future:

  1. Consolidate the "commodity" areas of the global news business, so that literally dozens of high-quality news organizations aren't covering the exact same stories and scratching and clawing just to survive, and
  2. Stop giving away for free news and information that people will happily pay for. What will people pay for? Well, for starters, they will pay for news they want that you have that no one else has. (They'll pay for other things, too, but you can worry about that later).

These things are already happening naturally, and they will continue to happen. And that's great news. Not just global news consumers, who now have access to more news at lower cost than they ever have in history, but for news professionals, too.

Contrary to what career newspaper folks will tell you, we are in a golden age for news. And as this transition period ends, and the industry consolidates and gets smarter, things are only going to get better.
