Young K-Pop Stars Get Worked To The Bone

K-pop

SEOUL, South Korea — This week, a famous K-pop star in South Korea got all teary-eyed on television, talking about the 11 years she spent preparing for her career.

But it wasn't a misty-eyed nostalgia that overcame Lee Hwan Hee, otherwise known as Fwaney, a former trainee from the South Korean girls group Girls' Generation. Rather, it was recalling the long hours and grueling rehearsals that filled her adolescent years.

This little nugget of news touches on a shady and under-reported facet of South Korean society: the practice of (gang-connected) old entertainment executives recruiting cute 10-year-old girls and boys, and training them for years — sometimes more than a decade — to join K-Pop groups.

The road to becoming a K-pop star is indeed arduous. For many adolescents, it means giving up your teenage years — and often, your education — for the pursuit of celebrity and glamour.

More from GlobalPost: Whatever happened to the Korean Wave?

After rehearsing their dance moves and singing skills at one of the country's few K-pop boot camps run by major labels, many boys and girls are recruited when they're adolescents or teenagers.

From there, the recruits must dedicate their youth to prepping for the concert circuit. They can spend anywhere between four and sometimes 10 years in training with their new musical buddies for hours each day.

The marketers will expect nearly all men and women to get a cookie-cutter assortment of cosmetic operations: a pointier nose, botox injections, and an eye lift among others. (For the past few years, South Koreans have topped the charts for most cosmetically enhanced people in the world, and the pressure only gets heavier among stars.)

You'd think this is a glamorous industry, as if Koreans are joining the ranks of Hollywood glitterati and having parties in their Gangnam penthouses. In reality, the spoils of celebrity don't trickle down much to the bands themselves, and the work hours are long and rough.

The profits are also massive in an entertainment industry that's expanding rapidly around the rest of Asia. But the money tends to line the pockets of executives in South Korea's top-heavy society.

That comes with one caveat: you can hit it particularly big, joining the ranks of Psy, JY Park and Rain — in which case you're set.

More from GlobalPost: Islands in dispute, is K-pop too?

Adding to the tragedy, most K-pop groups have a shelf life of two to three years before they fade into obscurity. The boot camp system is like a factory, constantly pumping out the hottest and youngest stars. Once you reach 25, your chances of getting replaced are nearly certain.

Seth Meyers

Longtime "Saturday Night Live" cast member Seth Meyers will replace Jimmy Fallon as the host of NBC's "Late Night" show, Entertainment Weekly reports.

The announcement was made Sunday by Bob Greenblatt, the chairman of NBC Entertainment.

Meyers will take over the 12:35 a.m. slot in 2014. The exact premier date has not been announced yet. Fallon will get bumped up an hour as Jay Leno's successor on NBC's "Tonight Show," probably next January, according to The New York Times.

Meyers joined the SNL cast in 2001. In 2006, he was promoted to head writer after Tina Fey's departure as executive producer. Meyers has also anchored "Weekend Update" solo since SNL cast member Amy Poehler left in 2008.

"We think Seth is one of the brightest, most insightful comedy writers and performers of his generation," Greenblatt said in a statement. "His years at SNL's ‘Weekend Update’ desk, not to mention being head writer of the show for many seasons, helped him hone a topical brand of comedy that is perfect for the ‘Late Night’ franchise.”

'Gatsby' Has A Great $51 Million Weekend—Here's Your Box-Office Roundup

$

the great gatsby leonardo dicaprio

Harsh critics didn't have any effect on "The Great Gatsby."

The Baz Luhrmann directed film had a massive opening weekend.

Though it didn't beat out Disney's powerhouse "Iron Man 3" in its second box-office weekend, the adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic performed better than anyone anticipated.

While "Gatsby" performed fantastic for Warner Bros., Tyler Perry's "Peeples" bombed at the box office.

Though the film was only produced and not directed by Perry, the film still marks his first box-office flop.

Out of the top ten this week is Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling's "The Place Beyond the Pines." After seven weeks, the film has earned nearly $20 million.

"Scary Movie 5" also bowed out of a top spot after five weeks in release.

Here are this weeks winners and losers in Hollywood:

10. "Oz the Great and Powerful" just made it into the top ten earning $802,000. With another round of big potential summer hits coming to theaters, this is probably the final hurrah for "Oz."

9. Reese Witherspoon's personal run-in with a cop hasn't negatively affected her film, "Mud." The movie, in less than 900 theaters, earned $2.5 million this weekend.

8. Robert De Niro's "The Big Wedding" moves down two notches this weekend earning $2.5 million. The film cost an estimated $35 million to produce and has earned $18.3 million to date.

7. DreamWorks Animation Studios' "The Croods" falls two spots this weekend earning $3.6 million. Oversall, the cavemen movie has earned more than $533 million worldwide.

6. With a lot of competition at the box office, Tom Cruise's "Oblivion" falls fast with $3.9 million. The futuristic Universal film has earned $242.6 million worldwide.

5. Jackie Robinson flick "42" has one of the smallest box-office drops (23.2%) this weekend, earning $4.7 million.

4. "Tyler Perry Presents Peeples" flops earning a mere $4.9 million. The film, though not directed by Perry himself, is produced by him and is his lowest box-office opening ever. "Peeples" cost an estimated $15 million to produce.

3. Mark Wahlberg's "Pain and Gain" holds with $5 million in week three. The film has now earned $41.6 million at theaters.

2. It may not have taken the top spot at theaters, but "The Great Gatsby" exceeded all box-office expectations earning a massive $51.1 million opening weekend. The film was originally tracking to earn near $40 million.

1. "Iron Man 3" has a strong second weekend earning $72.5 million. The sequel has now taken in $284.9 million at the box office in North America in two weeks. Worldwide, the film is closing in on $1 billion dollars.

Photos From The 'Iron Man 3' Promotion In Which Actors Entered A Theater With Fake Guns

The Goodrich Capital 8 Theater in Jefferson City, Missouri, thought it would be a really great idea to "entertain" customers who had come to see Iron Man 3, that it hired a bunch of cosplay actors to dress up as the titular character, and an entourage of gun-toting, body-armor wearing "S.H.I.E.L.D." agents from the movie.

In the era following the massacre at a screening of Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colo., what could possibly go wrong by having a bunch of people walking around a cinema holding replica automatic weapons?

The theater has since apologized for upsetting its customers, and insisted it was not a publicity stunt. Here are some images of the event from Imgur:

Looks like there's a silver lining to Kiefer Sutherland's Fox drama "Touched" getting canceled last week, because now the actor is free to reprise his role as Jack Bauer in a "24" limited series.

The 12-episode reboot will be titled "24: Live Another Day" and is set to premiere in May 2014.

"24 compressed over 12 weeks, Jack is back," Fox entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly told reporters Monday during a conference call prior to the network's upfront presentation.

"The [event series] franchise is less than six months old and we're getting a who's who of Hollywood in the door to participate in this," Reilly continued.

Adds The Hollywood Reporter, "Fox currently has a handful of other event series in development as it looks to lure top names for shorter time commitments in a bid for prestige and to draw eyeballs to programming without interruption."

Oscar-Winner Jennifer Lawrence Lives A Surprisingly Frugal Lifestyle

$

jennifer lawrence

Fame and fortune often makes us think of the usual celebrity artifice that goes hand in hand with anyone big-name in Hollywood: An endless cash flow, million-dollar bank accounts, extravagance, excess, prime real estate, luxury cars — maybe a little bankruptcy thrown in for good measure.

Not every star and starlet out there lives up (or down, however you look at it) to this stereotype. In fact, many well-known A-listers are actually some of the most financially responsible people … even more than regular people. One star that’s continually pointed to as a perfect example is Jennifer Lawrence. Though the Hunger Games and Silver Linings Playbook star’s financial wealth is climbing, she’s known for staying frugal.

At just 22 years old, Lawrence has been thrifty and realistic right from the start, making her a good role model for younger people who haven’t yet developed good money habits yet.

Jennifer Lawrence: Oscar Winner and Frugal, Too

“J. Law” was born into a middle-class family in Louisville, KY, in 1990. She’s credited her mother, a camp counselor, and her father, a former construction firm owner, for instilling in her good financial values from the start.

“I was raised to have value for money, to have respect for money, even though you have a lot of it,” she told the U.K. magazine Fabulous last month. “My family is not the kind of family that would ever let me turn into an a**hole or anything like that, so I am fortunate to have them.”

What kinds of frugal banking habits does Lawrence practice? For one, she lives in the same 3-bedroom apartment since she moved to Los Angeles several years ago, and hasn’t rushed out to buy a house yet.

Lawrence has no personal assistants to do her shopping and she won’t be found frequenting any uber-high-scale stores, preferring to clip coupons like the rest of us.

She’s also cautious to use valet parking, but she compensates by driving an economical car. Lawrence still has the same Volkswagen she’s owned for years now — unlike other rich stars, she hasn’t run out to buy a Bentley or Bugatti. Since her Best Actress win for The Silver Linings Playbook, she has been spotted in a new Chevy Volt, but at a $39,000 price tag, it’s 10 times cheaper than what most other celebrities get behind the wheel of.

“I still look for bargains when I go to the market,” she said in another interview. “What I am doing now is allowing someone to park my car but for that I have to pay four bucks.”

Lawrence also said that she can’t envision spending lots of money on frivolous purchases — think $6 for a Snicker bar. Frugality is so ingrained in her lifestyle, she apologetically admitted that a $500 order of Gummy Bears while hanging out with Lenny Kravitz was, in fact, an accidental purchase.

Top of the A-List

Her thrifty lifestyle is impressive for anyone, but it’s made more remarkable for the fact that Jennifer Lawrence’s net worth is in the millions of dollars … soon to be the tens of millions. As of this year, the actress’ total worth is estimated between $2 million to $7 million, according to several sources, and will soon grow with a number of upcoming film roles.

For Jennifer Lawrence, salary growth has happened at a meteoric pace since her film career started blossoming in 2010. She was only paid a scale rate for her role in 2010′s Winter’s Bone. Despite receiving an Oscar nomination for that film, many people criticized Lawrence’s modest $500,000 pay for the first Hunger Games installment last year, considering how the movie grossed more than $691 million.

“Seeing as the movie has surely beaten any and all goals … we expect Lawrence should be receiving her payout,” said Kirsten Acuna of Business Insider upon the film’s release last year.

According to publication Screen Rant and other sources, Lawrence will be getting her due, after her Best Actress win and past X-Men success: For the Hunger Games’ upcoming sequel, Catching Fire, she’ll earn $10 million, placing her on the fast track in a few years to become one of the world’s highest paid actresses.

A Silver-Lined Financial Future

Combined with her smart financial choices, Lawrence is one of Hollywood’s rare figures, commanding high earnings through pure talent — and using them to good measure. The actress isn’t an older star who learned her financial lesson after years of money problems. She’s also not a ticking time bomb like the Lindsey Lohans of the world. She’s someone who can afford the best, but chooses to spend only enough to get by.

Lawrence is part of a new generation of financially literate celebrities (like Zooey Deschanel), smart with the money choices they make in life. Anyone young or old can take several cues from her on striking a good balance between earning and spending — proof that not all million-dollar celebrities are wasteful with their finances.

Advertisers Will Spend Nearly $10 Billion This Week On A Broken TV Model

$
0
0

leslie moonves

This week, advertisers will sit down with the broadcast TV networks and hash out their "upfront" ad buying deals for the year.

The talks are one of advertising's huge, dramatic set-pieces. As Ad Age describes it, "possibly as few as 40 people from the networks, agencies and brands will go into backrooms and decide how $9 billion of the $62 billion U.S. TV ad market will be spent next year."

Networks are expecting, again, to see TV ad spending rise. CBS chief Les Moonves is bullish, and analysts expect the network may get 7-9% price increases. Some believe more than $10 billion will get spent.

Oddly, the networks want those increases even as the viewing audience itself dwindles. Goldman Sachs estimates that 17% of the 18-to-49-year-old demographic simply stopped watching broadcast TV in winter 2012-2013, the New York Times notes.

On its face, this doesn't make sense: Why would advertisers pay more to get less?

The usual explanation is to do with supply and demand. Although TV's numbers may be dwindling, it still has a massive audience. And with the fragmentation of the audience across thousands of different online and digital venues, there remain very few vehicles who can reliably deliver eyeballs in the millions, night after night. The supply of big audiences is getting smaller, in other words, and thus prices increase.

But there are signs that this won't last, and that broadcast TV may be facing a crisis. The Times said:

"The networks are getting picked at from every direction," said Jessica Reif Cohen, the senior media analysts at Bank of AmericaMerrill Lynch. "This year was the tipping point," she said, "when the television ratings really fell apart."

Put that together with competition from Aereo, which reroutes free, over-the-air broadcast signals onto computers and iPads where people can watch TV without paying for cable. News Corp. has already said it will stop broadcasting Fox TV, and go cable-only, if it cannot extract transmission fees from Aereo. (Most people watch "broadcast" TV on cable or satellite, where stations get fees from subscribers.)

It's not just Aereo of course. It's Hulu and YouTube and Netflix and a hundred other alternatives to watching TV.

Think about that: The model is so broken that a major broadcaster has threatened to stop broadcasting in order to save itself.

It begs the question: With declining audiences, and dozens of new ways to watch shows without paying for cable, how long with these $10 billion meetings last?

Self-tanning brand St. Tropez's summer campaign features a bikini-less Kate Moss.

Advertisers often try to avoid stars who are over-exposed — in the media sense — but Moss's ubiquity in beauty brands was part of the reason St. Tropez wanted to work with the model.

Moss has appeared in campaigns for Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Calvin Klein, Chanel, Topshop, Rimmel, Bulgari, Mango, Agent Provocateur, Virgin Mobile and Burberry. The company said that Moss's "growing number of beauty campaigns proves that her appeal as a beauty icon resonates with confident women across all age groups globally."

“We’re absolutely thrilled that Kate Moss has chosen to work with us on our new campaign: it gives us the ultimate stamp of approval on the quality of our products," said Michelle Feeney, CEO of PZ Cussons Beauty, the owner of St.Tropez.

The print and on-line campaign is carefully executed to demonstrate that Moss, 39, has no tan lines. (The images below aren't particularly graphic, but they may not be acceptable for viewing in more conservative workplaces.)

The campaign was created by UK advertising agency, Karmarama.

Disney Announces That The Next 'Star Wars' Will Be Filmed In The UK

yoda, star wars, the empire strikes back

Like its six predecessors, Star Wars: Episode VII will be filmed in the United Kingdom, Lucasfilm announced today.

“We’ve devoted serious time and attention to revisiting the origins of Star Wars as inspiration for our process on the new movie, and I’m thrilled that returning to the UK for production and utilizing the incredible talent there can be a part of that,” company president Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement posted on the official Star Wars website Friday.

“Speaking from my own longstanding connection to the UK with films like Raiders of the Lost ArkEmpire of the Sun and recently War Horse, it’s very exciting to be heading back.” Portions of the previous Star Wars films were shot at British studios such as Shepperton and Pinewood.

Production should be starting soon on Episode VII as the J.J. Abrams-directed and Michael Arndt-scripted movie is expected out in 2015. In fact, Kennedy and the rest of the Jedi gang might be back in Britain for a while. Disney bought Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion in October and immediately announced that three new Stars Wars films would be coming in the next several years.

The return to the UK also likely includes some sweet tax benefits for the hugely successful franchise. The online announcement noted that “earlier this year, representatives from Lucasfilm met with the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, in London to establish an agreement to produce Star Wars in the UK” and had a gushing comment from the government minister accompanying it.

Where To Eat, Sleep, and Play During The Cannes Film Festival

Cannes

It's festival time in Cannes, so whip out your shades—and your platinum card—and head to La Croisette to bask in the rays of the Riviera sun and the Hollywood glitterati, who descend from the firmament for the annual Cannes International Film Festival (May 15-26).

For those who won't be attending the pro's-only fest, there's still plenty to do around town, along with lots of opportunities for stargazing—after all, that is what Cannes is all about.

Ritzy Retreats

For maximum celebrity exposure, head to the luxurious Hotel Martinez, Cannes' designated hotel-to-the-stars. A high-society playground since the roaring twenties, the Art Deco hotel's sumptuous décor, palm-enclosed pool, and private beach provide a picture-perfect backdrop for Hollywood's A-list. Mere mortals can't go wrong at the sleekly modern Five Seas Hotel. Just off the Croisette, and convenient to everything, the hotel's ravishing interiors, spacious rooms, and superb infinity pool assure a stylish crowd. If money is an object, Hotel Cezanne offers 28 ample rooms, and a spa, all done up in 50s-style glamour at a price that's reasonable by Cannes standards.

Ritz Carlton CannesEat, Party, Shop

If you can't snag a reservation to the Hôtel Martinez's Palm d'Or restaurant—considered the best in town—never mind, elegant dining is in no short supply. With two Michelin stars in his toque, chef Bruno Oger's Villa Archange proffers lavish French haute cuisine. Just next door, Oger's Bistrot des Anges sports a light-filled dining room, terrace, and a reasonable 29€ fixed-price menu. For more prosaic fare, the ultra-popular Le Pastis café offers an updated French brasserie menu, fast and friendly service, and a prime location just off the Croisette. With no phone and no email address, the ever-crowded Aux Bons Enfants (80 rue Meynardier) can rest on its laurels and an excellent Provençal menu served to a mostly local crowd (note: cash only). The bustling Forville market, just around the corner, is your best bet for picking up a fresh baguette and a cornucopia of regional delicacies for a do-it-yourself picnic on the beach.

Cannes' club scene runs the gamut from disco beats to plush cocktail lounges and everything in between. Pass muster with Le Baoli's burly doormen to gain access to the inner sanctum of the hottest spot in town, where the international jet set swills champagne while lounging among cabanas and palm trees. The theatrical Da Da Da Club's cabaret-meets-disco scene and trendy lounge draw a fashion-conscious crowd. If dropping a cool €20 per cocktail leaves you undaunted, it doesn't get more glamorous than L'Amiral piano bar at the Hotel Martinez.

This year, Cannes' open-air Cinema de la Plage joins in the Cannes Classics celebration, with screenings of lavishly restored roster of iconic films, including 50 Years of James Bond, with the best of 007 alongside classics like Jaws. Movie buffs can revel in the greats from lounge chairs on the beach in one of Cannes more democratic moments.

Shoppers need look no further than the rue d'Antibes for top designer boutiques, smaller French fashion chains, and one-off shops. Nearby rues Meynadier and Hoche pick up where d'Antibes leaves off. For the kind of local products that are easy to pack and please just about anyone—olive oil, soap, tapenade—the Marché Forvil in Le Suquet old town is your best bet (Tues-Sun) and the antiques market, on the same spot, happens every Monday.

Get Out of Town (Antibes, Grasse, and Beyond)

First and Foremost: Just 15 miles from Cannes, in a picturesque setting among tall trees and lush gardens, the Maeght Foundation, one of Europe's leading modern arts centers, presents works made specifically for the foundation—including the Miró labyrinth, Giacometti's courtyard, stained glass by Braque, and murals by Chagall

A glittering jewel in the Rivera's crown, Antibes' maze-like streets and inspiring natural setting are well worth the short 7-mile detour. Gateway to the Cap d'Antibes, the resort town was a favorite haunt for artists like Picasso and Matisse. Stroll through the botanic gardens or visit the superb Musée Picasso, testament to the artist's devotion to his one-time home.

Make like a millionaire and check into the sublime Hotel du Cap Eden Roc, contender for most splendid hotel in France, and a celebrity paradise. Baz Luhrman's Cannes opener, Gatsby, might have been filmed on the sublimely manicured 22-acre estate, where F. Scott Fitzgerald set "Tender is the Night" in the hotel's heyday as a watering hole for international elites. Spectacularly renovated in cool, subtle hues, the palatial estate shimmers like a mirage and boasts a guest list that reads like a Who's Who of the 20th and 21st centuries.

One of the more modern inland hill towns, Grasse is home to acres of lavender, jasmine, rose, and sweet orange that fuel the world's perfume industry. Legendary houses Guerlin, Chanel, and Dior, to name a few, all have their laboratories here, and the soaring Musee Internationale de la Parfumerie gives a fascinating glimpse into the 3,000-year-old art.

Halfway between Antibes and Grasse, the Le Mas Candille rests splendidly among ten acres of cypress and olive groves. Expanded from an 18th-century farmhouse, the Provençal-style hotel is a far cry from the relentless bustle of Cannes. Breathtaking views over the Mougins valley are restorative, as is the Shiseido spa, where the famous Qi treatments are said to erase tension—and wrinkles.

Here's What A High School English Teacher Thought Of 'The Great Gatsby'

Before Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby adaptation hit theaters this weekend, we wondered whether—through all the gauze, confetti, Jay-Z, and 3D—this was actually going to be a film that approached the book the way our high school English teachers did: with a lot of talk about Fitzgerald's use of symbolism.

You know, how the green light symbolizes the American Dream and the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg are the eyes of God.

Turns out, there was a lot of all that. So we decided, for a second watching, to take an actual high school English teacher as our movie date. Kyle Mullins teaches ninth and twelfth grade at Regis High School, a well-regarded Catholic school for boys in New York City.

Though he doesn't currently teach Gatsby—Regis includes the book in its sophomore curriculum—he is something of a Gatsby scholar: Mullins taught the book to undergraduates when he was a grad student at Boston College, and presented a conference paper exploring "queer transmission and sexuality" in the book.

Though it was hard to tell in the darkened theater—and through two layers of glasses—we noticed him giggle a couple of times. (Once when a party guest marvels of Gatsby: "He's certainly richer than God.") Afterwards we ducked into a Barnes & Noble to quiz him about his thoughts.

This Is Actually a Pretty Good High School Gatsby...

To be sure, The Great Gatsby movie does not hide from its source material's most famous passages: Fitzgerald's words are literally printed on the screen, and a late montage is something like a book report in 3D.

And while Mullins had some problems with the adaptation, he actually thought that Luhrmann did a nice job with the aspects of the book taught in actual English classes.

"As an interpretation I think he really nailed the high school angle of it," Mullins told us, as we sat, appropriately, in the bookstore's fiction section. "The symbolism was really overt. It bothered me being someone who studied it more seriously to see it be so blunt. Especially that scene at the end when Gatsby literally says, 'I was so empty inside,' and the degree to which it makes it so clear that he was doing this all for Daisy. It just lacks subtlety, I guess, but that's the way we teach it to sophomores in high school."

...Except When It Wasn't

There were elements of certain scenes that got very much lost in the transition from book to screen.

Most notably: In the scene where Nick and Gatsby pass the car of African Americans partying on a bridge, Mullins wished that Luhrmann had included the moment in the book when, importantly, a hearse passes them first.

"To cut the hearse out of that really simplifies the fact that African Americans are in that scene," he said. Also, the character of Jordan Baker, he said, was "very underutilized."

The Framing Device Is 'Kind of Unfair'

Mullins really wasn't keen on how Luhrmann and his collaborator Craig Pearce had Nick narrating and writing the story from a sanitarium. "I really didn't like it," Mullins said.

But he tried to make sense of Luhrmann's intentions: "I'm already kind of rationalizing it in the sense that he wants to be very clear that Nick is not a reliable narrator. Especially in showing the chart [with Nick's symptoms], it's not just that he's alcoholic but he's prone to fits of rage and an insomniac. So it's really raising questions about his mental stability, in a way that I think is kind of unfair. We don't quite get that from the novel."

Mullins added that Luhrmann's use of mist and snow in those scenes made him wonder whether Luhrmann was implying that the whole story was just borne out of Nick's imagination. Later, however, Mullins, remarked that he "loved" the moment of Nick looking out the window and seeing himself.

Punctuation Problems!

Luhrmann's use of text on screen can seem cheesy, but Mullins focused on something else: he got the punctuation wrong. "It doesn't preserve the punctuation," he said.

Take the famous last scene, for example. Mullins explained that the film left out the double em-dash in the final lines of the book. "You lose so much complexity there," he said.

3D Actually Makes Sense

While the 3D certainly makes the visual elements of the film look vibrant, Mullins had an academic perspective on it.

"It draws us in in a very intentional way," he said, and that actually mirrors the text. "In that last paragraph the way that Nick switches into that first person plural. In the end we're implicated in it and in the film we're implicated in the entire thing."

Would He Show It To High School Students?

Yes! "Definitely," Mullins said. "I think after having read the book it really opens up a great conversation with what's lost when you are changing mediums and what's gained."

What's gained? "You get the music. Even though this isn't jazz that Fitzgerald's writing about, you get the sense of how the music is infused in a lot of those scenes. You get a sense of what those parties are like."

He said the kids are probably "imagining a rave when they read that now." Mullins even gave us what is essentially an essay prompt about the final scene: "How is this different when you read it? What emotion does that conjure up when you're reading it and how does that change when you're seeing it simultaneously represented on the screen and narrated."

Yes, You Can See the Movie Without Having Read the Book (Sort of)

Mullins told us that he asked students in his ninth grade class—which hasn't had Gatsby in their curriculum yet—whether they were going to see the movie, and many of them said yes.

So what does a kid get from the movie without having read the book?

While obviously he wants kids to read the book, he explained, "if they are going to just go see the movie, and they are never going to pick up the book, I think they are getting a pretty good representation of it. I really do. I think Luhrmann really does do justice to what Fitzgerald intended with the story."

The New Daft Punk Album Is Going To Change Your Life

Maybe you haven't been paying attention to the longest, most epic album roll-out in music history, and maybe you have — either way, Daft Punk's long awaited new album "Random Access Memories" is almost upon us.

It's out next week officially, but you can stream it on iTunes now.

For weeks mysterious leaks (both legitimate and illegitimate) have teased fans around the world. To ease some of the suffering, the faithful have been playing the single, 'Get Lucky' on repeat and watching video interviews with the album's illustrious producers in a video series called 'Daft Punk: the Collaborators.'

Slowly, posters announcing the coming of 'The Robots' (as the French duo are often called) started appearing in cities around the world.

That's all well and good for the dance heads and beat detectives that have been waiting for this for years — It's even better for everyone else. Daft Punk is about to change all our lives, or at least our weekends.

Think about it: Now that the album is out, it's going to be everywhere. It will be in bars that play Rhianna and at sporting events to get the crowd clapping.

You'll hear it right after a Taylor Swift track while you're waiting in line at the drug store, it will be recommended to you on iTunes and Spotify.

Everyone will be talking about it and debating its merits. To compare it to Daft Punk's older work, the old hits will start playing too. It's inevitable.

This is going to be a global discussion. No one will be safe from The Robots.

And that's probably a good thing. The concept behind 'Random Access Memories' is to get away from the electronic dance music production that has gotten so ubiquitous. Yes, Daft Punk is an electro duo, and the album will keep their sound, but for this installment, the Robots were looking for live instruments and classic production.

To do that, they stacked the album with some of the most brilliant minds in popular music today. Producers include Pharrell, Giorgio Moroder, and the great Nile Rogers.

If you're not familiar with Moroder, you should know that he is the mind behind some of disco queen Donna Summer's greatest hits like 'I Feel Love' and 'Love to Love You Baby.'

As for Nile Rogers, his work is IMPOSSIBLE not to recognize. He's one of the most powerful, hidden forces in pop music. His sound is all around you. He's the founder of Chic, Sister Sledge and a number of other inescapable disco acts.

Rogers is also responsible for a number of classic albums, including Madonna's 'Like A Virgin' album and David Bowie's 'Let's Dance,' to name just a few.

In other words, Daft Punk brought in the big guns.

So whether you're a fan of dance music or not, prepare for an onslaught of Daft Punk. The Robots are coming, and they are welcome.
