Lindsay Lohan Enters The Betty Ford Center, Fires Her Lawyer [Report]

lindsay lohan attends progress report hearing airport branch courthouse 2011

After changing her mind several times this week, Lindsay Lohan has finally entered her 90-day court ordered rehab stay.

She originally planned to enter Seafield Center in Westhampton Beach, N.Y., but at the last minute flew to L.A. to check into Morningside Recovery because it's smoker-friendly -- but turns out the facility had its treatment license revoked.

So, finally, just hours before prosecutors would have had to seek an arrest warrant against the actress, Lohan entered the Betty Ford Center rehab facility in Rancho Mirage, CA.

"Lindsay checked in late Thursday night, barely dodging a looming arrest warrant," reports TMZ.

The facility was a surprising choice, considering Lohan got into an epic fight during her 2010 rehab stay there with a staffer, in which police were called and civil lawsuits were filed.

Meanwhile, Lohan has also reportedly let go of her latest lawyer Mark Heller and re-hired Shawn Chapman Holley, who she previously fired and still owes $150,000 in legal fees.

But at least Lohan will be well-dressed at her new chosen facility. Earlier this week, Lohan posted a photo to Instagram of herself, writing that she was packing 270 outfits for her 90-day rehab stay:

Joe Biden Julia Louis Dreyfuss

Julia Louis-Dreyfuss plays the vice president on her HBO show "Veep" and recently got to do some character analysis of the real second-in-command, Joe Biden.

During an appearance on "Conan," she explained, "He's so affable and charming. It was incredible. We have lunch together, and he was trying to be funny…"

Biden tried to crack a joke with the former "Seinfeld" actress, saying, "Hey, does your husband like to sleep with the Vice President, because I'm trying to convince Jill it's a good idea!"

Badoom-ching.

"It's racy but he didn't mean it in a racy way," she explained. "He was just being funny."

After lunch, the actress rode with the VP in his motorcade.

"I had my phone, and so he took a picture of us," Julia recalled. "It's him taking it with my phone! It's a selfie. Isn't that neat?"

Watch Julia recount the story to Conan below:

9 Celebrities Who Love Classic Cars

bradley cooper classic car

The North American International Auto Show in January inspired the Inquisitive Guest to gaze back to the graceful vehicles of yesteryear.

Bugattis. Duesenbergs. Hispano-Suizas (a favorite of this reporter). To fantasize about owning an elegantly restored classic with a glossy mirror paint job doesn’t cost a dime. But to purchase one and to have the engine purr on demand requires deep pockets indeed.

And if you don’t happen to be gifted with a socket wrench—which, by the way, many A-listers aren’t—you must also hire a trusted mechanic for vigilant maintenance. So for most of us, and supermodel Karolina Kurkova and Her Royal Highness Princess Firyal of Jordan, when it comes to vintage, there really is no DIY.

To find out what classic beauties stir the imaginations of actors, designers, and models, we attended heady events across the country, including the Golden Globes, the Art of Elysium Heaven Gala, the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, Fashion Group International’s Night of Stars, and a Dom Pérignon luncheon for the Board of the Princess Grace Foundation. Gentlefolk, start your celebrity engines.

More from Architectural Digest:

Ben Affleck

With a touch of gray in his beard, Ben Affleck, attending the National Board of Review awards gala in New York (where he picked up a special-achievement award), had the ’70s on his mind. “I’m not Jay Leno by any means,” the director of Argo said.

“Rather than buy the cars, I get obsessed with them on eBay. And I go through them all the time—I look at the Chevelles, all those great old ’70 muscle cars. I used to have a convertible Malibu. And when we first moved to California, my brother and I bought a ’72 Cadillac Sedan De Ville, which, for sentimental reasons, I still have, in storage. I love those cars, I love that era. That was really my time. Odd, because I really don’t remember any of it. ”

Michael Kors

On his way to be honored by God’s Love We Deliver at their annual fund-raiser, Michael Kors, who donated $5 million to the cause that night, explained, “I’m not a car guy, but maybe if I were a teenager on Long Island again—a Trans-Am with a big bow on the window.”

Sarah Jessica Parker

At Fashion Group International’s Night of Stars I saw actress Sarah Jessica Parker, who had on a colorful ribbon-striped dress by designer L’Wren Scott, whom she was honoring with an award that night. “My son [James Wilkie Broderick] is very, very into muscle cars from the ’70s,” said Parker. “But I’m a fan of Karmann Ghias."

Stephen Colbert Says 'Iron Man 3' And 'Man Of Steel' Are 'Destroying America'

Stephen Colbert Iron Man

Don't count Stephen Colbert as one of the people who will be purchasing tickets for this summer's upcoming blockbuster movies.

The "Colbert Report" host takes specific issue with "Man of Steel" and "Iron Man 3," joking that they are "destroying America."

"First of all, Superman is the quintessential American hero," Colbert said on his show. "Yet they gave the part to some limey named Henry Cavill."

Colbert continued to claim that the film is White House propaganda pushing President Barack Obama's agenda.

But what Colbert is most upset over is Marvel accepting financing from China-based studio DMG Entertainment to fund "Iron Man 3."

"To pay back their Chinese puppet masters," Colbert stated, Marvel released another version of the film which includes "significant Chinese elements -- including one of the country's top actresses, Fan Bingbing."

And Colbert says that makes him "angry-gry."

Donald Trump Goes Ballistic On Jon Stewart After 'Daily Show' Segment

On Wednesday "The Daily Show" aired a segment in which Jon Stewart referred to Donald Trump as F**kface von Clownstick. He said that it was Trump's birth name.

And while we're pretty sure Trump isn't one of the "Daily Show's" regular viewers, he did manage to hear about the segment and was, naturally, upset.

So as Donald Trump is known to do, he took his grievance to Twitter.

Check out the stream below:

At least Trump got his point across. In fact, "The Daily Show" noticed, and tweeted some responses that can only be described as ... satisfied.

The actual segment in question was about Senator Ted Cruz, and the fact that he can't really run for President because he was born in Canada. Stewart mused that investigating that was clearly a matter for Trump.

Matt Lauer broke his 17-year "no dancing" policy this morning on the "Today" show.

Lauer surprised his co-hosts and viewers as he danced alongside show guest Psy, allowing the Korean pop star to teach him his signature "Gangnam Style" and new "Gentleman" dance moves.

On Thursday's "Tonight Show," Lauer explained his former no-dance rule to Jay Leno"I made a vow years ago. Bryant Gumbel told me, 'Don't sing and don't dance on the show.'"

"I've made it 17 years without dancing ... tomorrow I might break the record," he hinted.

Here's one way to try and rehab a troubled reputation and declining ratings:

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Lauer discussed his recent bad reputation with Leno when he appeared on the show this week.

"You've been taking a lot of hits this year, how are you holding up?" asked the late-night host.

“It’s been an interesting year — no question about it,” admitted Lauer. “I am not a guy who complains — I love this job, I really do.”

Lauer also addressed a recent letter Kathie Lee wrote in support of her longtime friend and "Today" show family member.

Lauer calls it a “very, very sweet” gesture, emphasizing, “She’s kind and she’s compassionate — and she’s been there. She's a great friend.”

Lottery Winner Turns 'Mini-Mogul' Using Her $30 Million To Finance Films

$
0
0

cynthia staffordIf Megan Ellison shows what a very, very rich person with a yen for moviemaking can do, Cynthia Stafford is determined to show what a “a mini-mogul” who got her funding from a big lottery win, can do.

In the last few months, as Ellison, daughter of billionaire Larry Ellison, has counted the profits and losses from such high-profile films as Kathryn Bigelow’s “Zero Dark Thirty,” Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master” and John Hillcoat’s “Lawless,” Stafford has seen three of her own films come to the market.

With a smaller fund and less experience in the business, the former single mother of five from Hawthorne, Calif., has backed indies that haven’t made much of a mark on the critics or at the box office. But she’s enjoying the ride, Stafford told TheWrap.

“I love stories, and I love to see how people view the world,” she said. “I remember watching movies at home with my dad and saying, ‘What if we did this? If we had the money, could we?’ And I would always say, ‘Yeah, we will one day.’

“And now I’m in that one day, and I am really having fun with it.”

Also read: The Ellison Kids: Billionaire Producers Making Their Mark on Hollywood

The recent crop of films produced or partly financed by Stafford’s Queen Nefertari Productions consists of the comedy “The Brass Teapot” (photo below), starring Juno Temple and Michael Angarano as a young couple whose money problems seem to be over when they find a magic teapot that spews money every time one of them feels pain; "Polish Bar," a drama about a Jewish rapper and DJ; and the horror-movie spoof sequel "Holla II."

Stafford defended all three films and said she wants to be involved in films with positive messages, but critics turned up their noses at all three, which had limited theatrical runs and are available digitally. According to Box Office Mojo, “The Brass Teapot” has a lifetime gross of only $6,997 in two theaters, with “Holla II” grossing $41,537 in six. No theatrical release for “Polish Bar” is in the site’s database.

So is Stafford draining her $30 million lottery-funded production fund with these movies? (Stafford shared a $112 Mega Millions lottery win -- with a $67 million lump-sum payoff -- with her father.)

“Au contraire,” said Lanre Idewu, Stafford’s husband, who heads her production company. He insists that the use of tax credits and deals that return their investment first give the company a healthier financial outlook than you might expect.

“It’s part of our model to make sure that we’re out first,” Idewu (left, with Stafford) told TheWrap. “We want to make sure that we have the highest certainty of success. There is always a risk, but you want to stack the odds that you’ll actually receive money back in your favor as much as possible.”

The company, he added, is “all about ownership. We’d rather have 75 percent of a small pie than .001 percent of a bakery.”

brass teapot juno templeStafford said the film that had the biggest impact on her growing up was the 1967 drama “To Sir With Love,” with Sidney Poitier as a high school teacher. But when she won the lottery in 2007, she said, she had other priorities that took precedence over going Hollywood.

“I had bills I needed to pay,” she said. “I had kids that were in foster care that I needed to get out. Actually, my main thing about getting money was so that I could afford an attorney. And once I was able to take care of my legals and my financials, I thought, ‘Hey, what should I do with my time?’”

Also read: 5 Lessons From the Tribeca Film Festival

She made a $1 million donation to the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, and used that as an entrée to meet power players like David Geffen, who she said told her, “Watch over your finances” in a brief phone conversation.

She also went back to the two-day film school she’d attended before winning the lottery. The first time around, she remembered, the instructor asked the class, “How many of you think you’re going to do a million-dollar feature?”

“I raised my hand,” she said. “I won the money approximately a year later. And I took his class again, and he looked at me and said, ‘You won the lotto.’ And I said, ‘Yeah.’ He said, ‘I remember you said you were gonna get the money. What’s going on here? Are you a witch or something?’”

Now that she’s found her way into Hollywood and claimed the “mini-mogul” mantle, Stafford says she feels welcomed by the community she used to watch from the outside.

“I feel accepted,” she said. “But the other side of it is, I could care less.”

She burst out laughing. “I kind of live life on my own terms. I’m still new, and I’m having a good time with it. I got here from a house in Hawthorne that was barely a thousand square feet, housing me and five kids. And I’m grateful, really, just to be part of the process.”

Ireland Baldwin Reveals She Met Her Boyfriend Over Twitter

Ireland Baldwin

While Brad Pitt's struggle to save his troubled film "World War Z" landed the cover of June's Vanity Fair, Alec Baldwin and Kim Basigner's 17-year-old model daughter Ireland Baldwin steals the spotlight inside the magazine.

Baldwin, a prolific tweeter/instagrammer/viner, reveals in a new interview that she met her hunky surfer boyfriend, Slater Trout, over social media.

"[I met Slater through] mutual flirting efforts on the internet. [Twitter is] a modern-day public diary of your thoughts. You have to be careful, but at the same time it's kind of fun not to be too careful."

This week, Baldwin even captioned an Instagram photo: "Embarrassing to say I've had this photo on my computer before I even fell for the guy."

Baldwin goes on to discuss her "different" childhood.

"I had paparazzi and other things that my friends didn't have," she explains in a video shoot accompanying the magazine interview. "But it wasn't all that bad, it was fun. I don't mind it."

But Baldwin says her recent modeling wasn't always what she wanted to do.

Ireland Baldwin Slater Trout"My parents would urge me to take acting classes," says the now IMG model. "My dad always told me 'you're going to act, you're going to model, you're going to do it' and I was like 'no, I'm going to be a veterinarian.'"

"For a while I was interested in creative writing and writing for a show," she continues. "So I guess that would be my alternate path."

But Baldwin finally succumbed and today is following in her famous parents' footsteps.

"I was so defiant and just realized one day 'why not just try out?' and here I am now."

Despite her model-looks, Baldwin tells the magazine she wasn't always so sure of herself:

"I went through a lot in middle school, and you always try so many different looks and try to be so many different people. I finally realized I'm awkward, I'm lanky, and I'm going to embrace it — make fun of myself and just laugh."

white house down channing tatumSony released a new trailer for its upcoming summer film, "White House Down," and it's great.

The film follows John Cale (Channing Tatum) as he interviews for a Secret Service position at the White House.

However, the interview takes a turn for the worse when a hostage crisis gets underway.

Instead of running off, Cale heads into danger fighting off terrorists and teams up with the president (Jamie Foxx) to take back the White House.

This is how you get hired.

The film comes from director Roland Emmerich ("Independence Day"). The chemistry between Foxx and Tatum here is electric. That shouldn't be a surprise after seeing the two together on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

The Best And Worst Celebrity Tippers In Hollywood

$
0
0

david victoria beckham

Celebs gets all kinds of perks when out on the town, but they're still expected to plunk down twenty percent at the end of the night just like the rest of us.

Some do, and some don't. Some even don't tip at all.

We've combed the internet to find the stories of celebs who tip a hefty chunk of change, and those who barely tip pocket change at all.

Let's start with the worst.

Worst Tipper # 10: Rachael Ray saves money by only tipping around 10% on meals.

As the host of Food Network's $40 a Day, Rachael Ray showed viewers how to have fun in a new city without breaking their budget.

However, as many miffed waiters and waitresses have pointed out, part of her strategy is tipping around ten percent on many meals.

That's not yummers, Rachael. Not yummers at all.

Worst Tipper #9: Mick Jagger once left an 11% tip on a $90 pizza tab.

Estimates of Mick Jagger's net worth hover around $225 million, and he's earned every penny of it.

However, eyebrows were raised when the Stones frontman dined at Washington DC's Pizzeria Paradiso and racked up a $90 tab, and left an 11 percent tip of $10. One message board even has a report of Jagger dining there and failing to leave any tip at all.

The best things in life may be free, but generally a decent tip starts at fifteen percent.

Worst Tipper #8: Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is "just a cheap pebble."

By all accounts an all-around nice guy, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson still managed to rub one waiter the wrong way, who promptly took to the internet to vent.

According to the anonymous waiter, Johnson asked a steak house to open up early, so Johnson could avoid his fans.

At the end of the meal, Johnson reportedly left a seven dollar tip. As the waiter seethes, "This guy is not a 'Rock' to me, just a cheap pebble."

Use Our Excel Spreadsheet To Bet On The Kentucky Derby

$
0
0

revolutionary

The 139th Kentucky Derby on May 4, 2013, has already dealt a surprise: Black Onyx, which had been running in the No.1 post position at odds of 50-1, has scratched and won't be running.

That changes the odds for a lot of horses in the race. The former favorite, Orb, is now at 6-1. The new favorites are Revolutionary and Goldencents at 5-1.

The fun of the derby is that it brings out all the rank amateur bettors in the nation. I have a friend who places her bets at the last minute, after she's seen which horses have pooped before getting into the gate, for instance. Another acquaintance never bets on gray horses. "Gray don't pay!" is her motto.

This is no way to bet on horses.

I, however, have a horse-betting system that takes the guesswork out of it. Or at least, adds to the fun for those of who can't be bothered to read The Daily Racing Form.

The caveat here is that I know nothing about horses. But I do know that horse racing is really boring unless you have money riding on it. So I decided to approach the Kentucky Derby as if it were a probability problem that could be solved with Excel.

Here's how it works.

There are 19 horses in the running tomorrow (absent Black Onyx). So at the outset, you have a 1 in 19 chance of picking the winner.

Those are NOT good odds.

Some horses have better chances than others than winning -- they might not like longer races, for instance -- and bookmakers adjust the odds on each horse in order to reduce their losses if the favorite wins, and to attract money to the outsiders with very long odds.

But the bottom line is that the derby is a crowded race, random things happen, and in theory any horse can win.

So a sensible investor approaching the derby as if it were a portfolio with different risk levels in it might want to ask, How many horses can I bet on and still come out ahead if any one horse wins? Put another way, Can I spread my bets among as many horses as possible and still come out ahead?

The good thing about the derby is that there are a lot of horses running at very long odds. The formulas in my spreadsheet ask, for a $10 bet on each horse, How many horses can I bet on and still be able to win more than the total amount of money I've wagered?

This year, you can bet on 10 of the 19 horses at the current odds, and if any of them win you'll come out ahead. That reduces your overall odds to something slightly better than a 50/50 coin flip. Much better than 19-1.

Of course, your portfolio will contain NONE of the favorites. In other words, you're betting on all the horses the bookies think will most likely lose. But you're covering as much of the field as possible. Remember, you only need ONE horse to come good and Business Insider just paid your mint julep bill for the weekend!

The horses you must bet on are these: Oxbow, Golden Soul, Giant Finish, Palace Malice, Lines of Battle, Falling Sky, Charming Kitten, Will Take Charge, Java's War and VyJack.

Kentucky Derby 2013

A $10 bet on each one to win will cost you $100. If any of them come first you will win at least $220 and as much as $490. (I've built in a margin to give the betting a purpose -- there's no fun in betting $100 to win $110, for instance.)

The other disclosure here is that I've used the current odds as of 10.49 pm on Friday, not the Morning Line. Odds change up to post time, so this is for fun only.

Personally, I use the spreadsheet as an advisor, not a decider. Remember the Edwards Quant Fallacy: There's a difference between good data and applying judgment to good data. So at post time consider picking only three or four horses, some at good odds and some at long odds. That limits your losses but makes your gains interesting. The worst thing that can happen is that you'll add some genuine excitement to a race that is, otherwise, 2 minutes of chaos.

The pro-Assad hacking group Syrian Electronic Army (SEA) appear to have taken over the Twitteraccount of E! Online, using it to tweet a fake headline that said Justin Bieber had come out as gay.

The hack comes after similar attacks on the Twitter accounts of the AP and the Guardian.

Here's a screenshot of the E! Online Twitter account at the time of writing (update: the account has since been suspended):

E!Online Hacked

The Bieber story seems to shock a lot of E! Online's followers:

E!Online Hacked

Bieber's online fanbase is on the defensive:

We reached out to one alleged member of the SEA, known as Th3 Pr0, who told us that he was behind the attack (Business Insider interviewed Th3 Pr0 — who claims to be just 18 years old— last week).

Th3 Pr0 sent us this screen-grab that appears to show himself in the E! Online account:

It's not entirely clear why the Syrian Electronic Army would target an entertainment group like E! Online (or, for that matter, a pop star like Bieber).

When we asked Th3 Pr0, he sent us a link to this tweet:

There's a lot to take in between vampires, werewolves, and cops hunting down the both that you'll probably have to give it a second watch.

The World's Top Models Describe What Their First Apartments Were Like

$
0
0

karlie kloss vsThe mere mention of the words “model’s apartment” could set a young man’s heart racing.

Aesthetically speaking, though, an interior designer might consider the first big-city flat of most budding supermodels a crime scene. Having discussed the subject with professional beauties for months—I know, tough job—the Inquisitive Guest discovered that the stereotype often rings true: Nearly every model admits her first apartment was little more than a closet and that she barely had time to unpack let alone take a trip to IKEA.

By the end of their careers, though, many successful models develop rarefied sensibilities and accumulate elegant artifacts from their epic sojourns.

To investigate the development of their home interiors over the years, we interviewed the models at the debut of HBO’s documentary About Face: Supermodels Then and Now, backstage at the Victoria’s Secret show, at the launch of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, and, of course, at Fashion Week.

Stephanie Seymour's first apartment was a loft in the same building as Keith Richards.

On the morning of Fashion Week’s great blizzard, Stephanie Seymour, seen here with Jason Wu, had managed to take her seat in the front row of the designer’s fashion show.

“My first apartment was a big loft, actually. Keith Richards lived upstairs. And that’s why I took the apartment. I had no furniture. I had a mattress on the floor. And, um, we drew all over the walls—I had a bunch of friends who were artists. My landlady wasn’t happy about it. We had a little table, a couple of chairs. And then just clothes everywhere.”

And her taste for interior design today? “I love to mix in modern art. I love William Morris wallpaper. My loft is more modern, more French ’50s. And then my house in Connecticut is a big mix of everything from a Jean-Michel Frank room to a big library, which is all English turn of the century. So I guess I like a little bit of everything.”

Chrissy Teigen had five roommates.

While hosting the Resolution Project’s Resolve 2012 gala at the Harvard Club, model Chrissy Teigen, seen here with her fiancé, John Legend, recalled her first model apartment. “Two bedrooms with six women in them,” she said. “I decided to take the couch, because I didn’t want to share a room with somebody. I had the pullout bed and the TV.”

And today? “I love darkness. We have an apartment down in SoHo: dark, woody, earthy, with big comfy couches, and a very comfortable open kitchen looking into the living room. It’s amazing!

Click here to see John Legend and Chrissy Teigen’s chic L.A. home.

Karlie Kloss lived in a "white box."

Backstage at Victoria’s Secret, Karlie Kloss owned up to the white-box model apartment when she was starting out.

“It was white walls, super-boring,” she said. And now Kloss plans to start over with her recently purchased two-bedroom in Manhattan, beginning with a 20-foot stretch of closets. “I want to do something really warm and very, very chic, almost like a Parisian apartment,” she told AD.

With new artists and bands emerging from all corners of the world, it’s tough to keep track of all the names, faces, and sounds out there.

We at FILTER Magazine have done all the hard work for you to curate a weekly guide of which bands are worthy of your ears.

From our motto, “good music will prevail,” to our free Good Music Guide, it’s safe to say that we know a little something about music.

Trust us; you’ll be dancing and singing along to these artists in no time!

Even after two weekends of never-ending music at the Coachella Music Festival, we still can’t get enough of some of the acts that we saw.

This first installation features bands that put on a rockin’ show in the desert sun of Indio, CA.

Palma Violets

Among all the electronic sounds of today, Palma Violets provides some relief with their pure garage rock n’ roll.

The guitars are loud and vocals gritty, just as they should be in a rock performance.

We aren’t the only ones who have taken notice of Palma Violets; they’ve won multiple awards in their native country England.

Check out their track “Best of Friends” to hear what all the hype is about – you won’t be disappointed!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs

This New York born and bred trio recently released their fourth album, Mosquito, to wide critical acclaim.

With a screeching wail, flamboyant costumes and a stage persona to match, frontwoman Karen O. is easily recognizable singing in a track and jumping around on stage.

The raw energy the band brought to Coachella simply placed them among the best acts of both weekends.

For a taste of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, we suggest you listen to their single “Sacrilege” and enjoy the gospel choir in the background.

The Neighbourhood

The Neighbourhood has just passed a very important milestone in the career of a band: they just released their debut album, I Love You.

The Los Angeles quintet’s first release is full of modern-sounding rock; it fuses hallmarks of alternative rock with dashes of R&B and hip hop to create a uniquely brooding sound.

They played an impressive set at Coachella and if that’s any indication of things to come, the future looks very bright for The Neighbourhood.

To get a feel for their sound, listen to their track “Sweater Weather”!
