Don Payne, a co-executive producer of "The Simpsons" and "Thor" screenwriter, died in Los Angeles on Tuesday after battling cancer. He was 48.

The University of California, Los Angeles graduate won four primetime Emmys with "The Simpsons" since joining the Fox show's writing staff in 1998. Payne wrote 16 episodes, including "Fraudcast News," which earned him the 2005 Writers Guild Paul Selvin Award.

“Don was a wonderful writer and an even more wonderful man," said "Simpsons" showrunner Al Jean in a statement. "He was beloved in the 'Simpsons' community and his untimely passing is terrible news to us all.  I know he is up with Thor now looking down at us and smiling.”

During his tenure at "The Simpsons," Payne also branched out into screenwriting with 2006's "My Super Ex-Girlfriend," followed by 2007's "Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer."

Payne also wrote a draft of "Thor" for Marvel, before working on the sequel, "Thor: The Dark World."

Payne had two episodes of “The Simpsons” in production at the time of his death. Both are scheduled to air during the show's Season 25, including this year's Christmas special, "White Christmas Blues."

Payne is survived by his wife and three children.

Barbara Walters Reportedly Announcing Retirement

$

barbara walters

From chicken pox and a fall that led to hospitalization to a shake up at "The View," 2013 hasn't exactly been easy on 83-year-old Barbara Walters.

The TV vet is now said to be setting the stage for her retirement after a 52-year-long career.

Deadline's TV editor Nellie Andreeva reports:

I’ve learned a plan has been put in place for Walters to announce her retirement, eyed for May 2014. Fitting for Walters’ status as the grand dame of TV journalism and a signature face of ABC News, I hear she would be given a big sendoff with retrospectives and other special content in the weeks leading to her retirement that would celebrate her 52-year broadcast career. Walters had been determined to leave on her own terms, so it is unclear whether revealing the plans would make her change her mind and whether she would go for a full retirement or keep some TV presence with occasional appearances and specials.

Walters was previously rumored to be retiring in 2011 after she accidentally remarked to President Obama into an open mic during a break in their interview that “I’m retiring next year.”

ABC News dismissed the comment as a joke at the time and Walters did not, in fact, retire last year — but it appears that's "The View" for next year.

Jon Hamm Don Draper Mad Men

The world got a healthy dose of TMI regarding "Mad Men" star Jon Hamm; namely that he likes going commando, but his "impressive anatomy is so distracting that they politely insisted on underwear.”

While Hamm didn't appreciate the NY Daily News report — "They’re called ‘privates’ for a reason. I’m wearing pants, for f**k’s sake. Lay off," he told Rolling Stone— Fruit of the Loom and Jockey both see this as a great marketing opportunity.

TMZ reports that both underwear makers reached out to Hamm to offer their services.

Fruit of the Loom issued the statement: "We want people to be themselves. And if going Commando makes you happy, we say go for it. But in case you change your mind, we got you covered."

Jockey told TMZ that "Jockey would like to offer our support for Jon Hamm in the form of a lifetime supply of Jockey underwear."

Both have stayed silent on their Facebook and Twitter pages.

Kate Bolduan CNN

On Thursday, CNN announced that Kate Bolduan and Chris Cuomo had received the coveted co-anchor positions for the network's new, still-untitled morning show.

Check Out The Most Famous Street Corners In Hip Hop History

Rap Quotes signs NYCJason Shelowitz is an artist and graphic designer based in Manhattan who combines his love for design with his passion for hip hop in his latest project, "Rap Quotes."

First seen on ANIMAL New York, Shelowitz has been installing signs with rap lyrics that reference street corners and locations all around New York City. He then posts the pictures of the official-looking signs to his @TheRapQuotes twitter feed.

"The idea came to me while working at home and listening to music," Shelowitz explained to Business Insider in an email. "The Big L song 'Lifestyles Ov Da Poor And Dangerous' was playing. I've heard it hundreds of times, but this time when I heard myself rapping along out loud: "On 139 and Lenox Ave there's a big park / And if you're soft don't go through it when it gets dark," I thought it would be cool to mark that location so anyone who walked by would know it was part of NYCs hip hop history."

He realized there were dozens of rap songs that mention specific NYC locations like housing projects and music venues, and so he started to produce his bright red street signs and put them up around the city.

"Many have already been stolen, which I knew would happen," Shelowitz said of his ongoing project. "One day I hope to use brass plaques to permanently mark these locations. But I would need permission from the city as well as a sponsor. I can't afford to do that in my own."

In 'You Wouldn't Understand,' Nas raps about Brooklyn's Lewis Avenue and Halsey Street.

Rapper Prodigy mentions 12th Street in Mobb Deep's 'Give Up The Goods (Just Step).'

40th Avenue makes an appearance in Tragedy Khadafi's 'Neva Die Alone Pt. 2."

Here's What It's Like To Be A Stand-Up Comedian

$

JR Berard Comedian

In a "dude guest blogger" post on actress Elizabeth Banks' website, Seattle comedian JR Berard wrote about the trials and tribulations of being an up-and-coming stand-up comic.

"Starting out as a comedian is a lot like going to college: you meet people who will become your best friends, you’ll drink a lot and lose countless hours of sleep doing what seems to be, 'a great idea at the time.' Your classroom is bars, clubs and restaurants."

Berard goes on to offer some tips for those trying to hone their craft:

  • “The stuff that makes you laugh out loud when you’re alone, that’s what you should be doing on stage. Nothing else I’ve learned in six years, has proven more true."
  • "I’m constantly writing new jokes, Comedians write everything down."
  • "Sometimes customers hate you because they’re actually having dinner. Try to win them over. It’s fun! Those are the nights I learned the most; being put in an environment where people didn’t want comedy, and telling them jokes."
  • "Getting consistent laughs took thousands of hours on stage, trial and error."

Above all, Berard says that "It’s art and if you want to be great; you need to dedicate yourself to it."

"When I really began to engulf myself in comedy I was also working at Home Depot. This meant, to get stage time, I would either: 1. Leave on lunch breaks and haul ass to/from clubs, OR 2. Go straight from work, find a 24hr fitness to shower, then get on stage somewhere. A lot of the time I would have plan ahead which nights I would get to sleep - around my traveling schedule of shows. But I was dedicated to this. This is what I wanted my job to be, making people laugh."

As for those times when jokes don't work and you're left standing alone on-stage with nothing but the sound of crickets, here's what Berard says that feels like:

"Imagine a room full of every girl who ever denied you a date (and you ASKED the hell outta them, like flowers and stuff, you even wore a bow tie cause you’re a moron). It’s freezing cold, they’re all wearing parkas, and you’re naked on stage in front of them. Oh, and now you have to RE-ask them all out at the same time. Sucks, huh? It’s a lot worse when you’re new and don’t know how to handle it yet. In reality, its just people you’ll never see again."

But, Berard promises, "once you begin to find your voice as a comedian, are consistently booked and like your material ... it rocks."

'The Walking Dead' And 'Toy Story' Share The Same Plot

The Walking Dead Toy Story sheriffWhat does AMC's hit zombie show "The Walking Dead" have in common with "Toy Story"?

Much more than you would imagine.

Just in time for the upcoming season finale Sunday, writer and director John Wray made a convincing mashup connecting the storylines of "The Walking Dead" to the "Toy Story" franchise.

We've run some of the photos with his permission.

Take a look >

Since Wray put up the images, they've been going viral on Reddit, and have been featured everywhere from BuzzFeed to UpRoxx.

Business Insider caught up with Wray to find how he made the connection between the Disney / Pixar favorite and one of the most popular shows on television right now.

According to Wray, the inspiration for the mashup album came after someone online pointed out the common elements between Lotso and the Governor from "Toy Story 3" and "The Walking Dead" respectively.

"It struck me that both were pitted against sheriffs," Wray told Business Insider. "Just to amuse myself I "cast"The Walking Dead with Toy Story characters. (Rex=Carol? Slinky Dog=T-Dog?) But when I figured out the Rick/Shane/Carl & Woody/Buzz/Andy triangles, I started to dig deeper."

Wray says he initially tried putting together a mashup video of "The Walking Dead" footage with "Toy Story" audio, but it deemed it too much effort for the amount of impact.

"I had to edit the scenes so heavily that it actually highlighted the differences rather than the similarities," said Wray. "So then the plan was to just do 5-10 funny side-by-side comparisons, but when I scrubbed through the footage I kept finding more and more material. I took the best ones and put together the album as it exists now. There are actually more that I didn't include, and I'm almost certain there are good ones that I missed."

Familiar with both works, Wray said the entire album of 40 images took him about a day and a half to compile.

"Most of that time was spent scrubbing through episodes of TWD[The Walking Dead] and the "Toy Story" movies. Once I knew what I wanted, piecing together the images didn't take much time at all."

Wray's album will change the way you look at both stories.

Why Screenwriters Have To Fight So Hard To Get Credited For Their Work

$

movie set cameras green screen

Few screenwriters go public with details of the sorry state of the Writers Guild’s very arbitrary arbitrations over credits.

But veteran scribe Doug Richardson does. He recently was one of the independent judges on a credits arbitration and blogs that “the awful process” made him recall his most memorable tale of woe. Even though he won. Here he explains why so many writers fight hard for credit besides recognition:

Money. The most obvious of motives are the hefty residuals that can be banked after a hit movie and also the potential for later employment by studios who generally prefer to hire writers with successful track records.

But there’s this other, less discussed, carrot-on-a-stick. It’s this little clause found in most screenwriter’s motion picture contracts called the “credit bonus.” Simply put, if the writer gets credit, the writer shall receive a big-assed bonus. Such is usually a last-minute negotiating giveaway to the writer in lieu of taking less dough up front. And it’s looked upon as funny money by industry lawyers because, by the time the movie gets made–if ever–who the hell knows how many writers might’ve worked on it, let alone how many deserved or could receive credit? Smooth, huh? Especially if it acts as catnip for snubbed writers who see the process of WGA credit arbitration as a potential lottery win.

Lil Wayne Explains The Real Reason Behind His 'Near-Death' Seizures

lil wayne new orleans

Lil Wayne is speaking out for the first time since his seizures last weekthat landed him in ICU for 6 days at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

"I could've died," Lil Wayne revealed during an interview with Power 106 radio station Thursday. "This time it got real bad ’cause I had three of them in a row and on the third one, my heart rate went down to like 30 percent."

Despite reports that the rapper overdosed on codeine with his "purple drink," he attributed the seizures to “just plain stress, no rest, overworking. That’s just typical me though.”

"The bad news is I’m an epileptic. I’m prone to seizures," continued Weezy. "This isn’t my first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh seizure. I’ve had a bunch of seizures, ya’ll just never hear about them."

The reason his most recent episode was so serious, he says, is "because it was three in a row, and I’ve never had three [seizures] back to back like that."

But at least the rapper's entourage know what do in case of emergency.

“I have people around me. I actually have [the seizures] so much they already know what to do," he says. "They already know how to handle it. Certain times I don’t even go to the hospital."

As for TMZ's reports that he was on his death bad in the hospital, Lil Wayne says he understands they were just doing their job.

"That’s what they do. I can’t be upset at that," he says. "I get upset at my kids when they do things that I tell them not to do. I can’t be upset at TMZ for doing what they do. They gon’ probably come out tomorrow and say something else about somebody else that ain’t true. That’s what they do. The truth isn’t good enough for them, so they gotta twist everything up."

Here's Why Celebrities Are Always Buying Each Other's Houses

brad pitt malibu house

Brad Pitt sold his Malibu beach house to Ellen Degeneres. Ryan Seacrest picked up Ellen's Beverly Hills compound for $49 million. Christina Aguilera bought Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne's home back in 2007.

Celebrity-on-celebrity real estate deals seem to happen all the time. What gives? Is there some unspoken rule that says famous people can only live in the homes of other famous people?

Celebrity real estate blogger The Real Estalker has a logical explanation, which she explains in the Hollywood Reporter. In short, stars' homes have some unique amenities that only a fellow star would appreciate.

She writes:

Stars and other high-net-worth people have special real estate needs regular people don't, needs probably already addressed in a home owned by a celebrity: high walls to act as looky-loo buffers, remote-control access and badass alarm systems are inviolable requirements. They need Kardashian-sized closets for all their swag and a home office to house their squadron of personal assistants.

Since privacy is also important to celebrities, many of their real estate transactions are shrouded in secrecy in ways that regular folks would never even consider.

According to the Real Estalker, "It's not uncommon for brokers to sign lengthy nondisclosure agreements (NDAs), be told they can't have open houses and/or be asked to quietly shop a star's home off-market as a pocket listing before it goes on the MLS, if it ever does."

Matt Lauer Apologizes To Former 'Today' Intern Who Tweeted He Was 'Not So Nice'

Sixteen years before Mark Zinni was an anchor/reporter at Cleveland's Fox 8 News, he was just a lowly intern at NBC's "Today" show.

But Zinni became nationally known Thursday after a tweet in which he called Matt Lauer "not so nice" went completely bonkers on Twitter.

It all started when Zinni responded to a tweet inquiring about the controversial Lauer:

Mark Zinni Matt Lauer tweet

The tweet went viral after it was mentioned by Zinni's newscast producer:

Lauer, who's been called a "bully" in the press this week, caught wind of the tweet and offered an apology (which has since been deleted):

After a barrage of Twitter comments and press following Lauer's reply, Zinni defended his story in a post on FOX8.com, writing:

Darren Sweeney, an executive producer at FOX 8, asked about my experience with Matt Lauer. If you know me, you probably know that I don’t take myself too seriously. So, my answer was more of a joke about being young and naive during my time at Today, but I added that he wasn’t nice to me. I didn’t slam the guy,I just made an honest comment. ...

Twitter is a great resource for everyone because it’s instant and, thankfully, shorter than a phone call. Bottom line, I was shocked Matt Lauer even bothered with me and, really, he remembers me? I’m flattered.

The Real Reason Google Is Giving Rapper Soulja Boy A Chance To Try Glass (GOOG)

Soulja Boy

Googlerecently started notifying the 8,000 "winners" of its #ifihadglass campaign.

Among them is rapper Soulja Boy, best known for his hit song "Crank That."

So just what did Soulja Boy say to earn himself the coveted opportunity to become a Glass Explorer?

"#ifihadglass I would put it in my new music video @projectglass," the he tweeted the second to last day before the contest ended.

Obviously, this is could be a great marketing opportunity for Google. While some may argue that Soulja Boy isn't quite as popular as he used to be, he has a pretty healthy Twitter following of more than 5 million people. Though, it's nowhere close to artist Justin Bieber, who has more than 36 million followers.

In response to the news, Soulja Boy tweeted, "@projectglass yeah! so cool thanks." So we figure that means Soulja Boy will accept the invitation and fork over $1,500 to get his hands on a pair of Glass.

Based on the responses, most people seem to be pretty happy for Soulja Boy. Except for one guy named Hunter McIntosh, who tweeted"@projectglass @souljaboy you have got to be kidding me."

Jennifer Lawrence Is Cheap Because 'I Was Raised To Have Value For Money'

Jennifer Lawrence Fabulous magazine

Jennifer Lawrence currently graces the cover of UK magazine Fabulous and inside talks about her views on her newfound fame and fortune.

At just 22-years-old, the Oscar winner already seems to be responsible with her finances.

“I was raised to have value for money, to have respect for money, even though you have a lot of it," she tells the mag.

“That’s why mini-bars are difficult, because it’s like yes, I can afford a $6 Snickers bar, but there’s just something wrong with that!" exclaims the actress. "I still drive my same car I’ve been driving for a long time and I haven’t bought a house yet."

And despite being the current face of Dior, she hasn't even embraced couture clothing or fashion.

"I’ve hated shopping my entire life," adds Lawrence. "My mom used to drive me to TJ Maxx and I would almost faint out of boredom."

But while the actress may not feel different from her former, non-famous self, she says that people do look at her differently now.

“I don’t ever walk around feeling famous. I walk around feeling the exact same way I have walked around my entire life,” says the "Silver Linings Playbook" Oscar winner. "But it’s not until I talk to somebody and see in their eyes that I’m different. It makes me feel weird.”

In fact, Lawrence says her fame makes her feel incredibly awkward and uncomfortable, comparing herself to a scared Chihuahua.

"Making movies is where I belong. I shouldn’t be heard just talking," Lawrence explains. "So, when I’m doing movies, I’m really happy. That’s where I’m comfortable, that’s my home. When you put me on a red carpet or on a stage, I turn into chihuahua Jennifer.”

As for who keeps the star sane, she fully credits her family, who let her move to New York to pursue acting at age 14.

Of that time period, Lawrence says "I think my mom saw the same thing and didn’t really want to send me back to school, where I wasn’t very happy. She saw how happy I was, living in a rat-infested apartment by myself, just auditioning.”

“My family is not the kind of family that would ever let me turn into an a--hole or anything like," adds Lawrence. "So I am fortunate to have them.”
