Justin Bieber Just Invented An Amazing New Use For Instagram

$

0

justin bieber

At 11.15 a.m. this morning, Justin Bieber discovered an amazing new use for Instagram:

The long-form social media rant.

The tactic takes advantage of Twitter's famous limit on tweet-length.

For years, angry celebrities (and anyone else with thoughts more complicated than 140 characters) have been frustrated by the central flaw in Twitter's publishing architecture: Everything you say is published most-recent first.

This is fine for one-off, short messages. But it's lousy if you need to express a concept that requires two or more tweets — the sentences appear "backwards" when seen by your readers, with the last tweet appearing as the first tweet at the top of your feed.

Bieber has now fixed this for all of us.

"Everyone in my team has been telling me, 'keep the press happy' but I'm tired of all the countless lies in the press right now," he told his fans in a 315-word essay decrying his critics "Saying I'm going to rehab and how my family is disappointed in me."

The link to his cri de coeur — "I honestly don't care if you don't believe in me because I believe in me, my friends believe, my family believe, my fans believe, and look where that's gotten me so far"— was posted on Twitter as an Instagram photo link:

Justin Bieber

Followers who clicked on it were taken through to Instagram, where they saw a black-and-white picture of the back of Bieber's head (above) and his manifesto against the media, which was 1,266 characters long.

Here it is:

Justin Bieber

Twitter should take this seriously: Although a tweet was used to publicize the statement, the actual scoop was delivered on Instagram, owned by Twitter's arch-rival, Facebook.

Long-form writing has taken a beating in social media over the five years. In addition to Twitter's letter-limit, Facebook hides longer status updates (requiring users to click for more) and advertisers have deliberately targeted dollars at so-called "snackable media" — the kind of content short enough to be satisfying on a cell phone.

To show you how different the Bieber Instagram proclamation is, compare it to Bieber's previous Manifesto Against The Haters, published March 6:

Justin Bieber

As a piece of writing, it's a disaster. Something about rumors, God and a 19-year-old going to a nightclub? What? Who can tell.

It's not a soliloquy, it's a grammar puzzle.

So, thank you Justin Bieber. History has yet to judge your existential philosophy — "i know who i am and i know who i'm not" — or, indeed, your punctuation. But as Marshall McLuhan once noted, the medium is the message: And you have delivered a new one.

Now Watch: Why Instagram Is Such A Huge Success

Ricky Gervais Will Unleash Original Content Exclusively On YouTube

$

ricky gervaisEXCLUSIVE: Ricky Gervais, scourge of the Golden Globes and creator of The Office, Extras and most recently Derek, has made a deal through Derek Productions to provide exclusive original content to the Ricky Gervais YouTube channel.

That channel is part of the web hub’s original channels initiative in the UK.

Said Gervais: “Any artist will tell you that they want as many people to see their work with as little interference to that work as possible. To create, get final edit, and be the broadcaster is the ultimate artistic experience. This is why I have partnered with YouTube for original programming. And because of all that money they gave me too, obviously.”

Gervais’s first contribution will be to bring back David Brent. That character had a cameo appearance in an episode of The Office: An American Workplace in 2011, and this will be the first fully authored performance of Brent since 2003. The channel will air all new original content from Gervais, including sketches, filmed podcasts & behind the scenes antics and interviews from the forthcoming The Muppets… Again. The web channel is accessible on youtube.com/rickygervais.

The deal is co-production with Derek Productions and ChannelFlip, the online broadcaster that runs more than 140 YouTube channels with 90 million views per month. Derek Productions is repped by United Agents.

A personal word on Gervais. He shocked Hollywood when he hosted the Golden Globes festivities for two years with unbelievably bracing humor at the expense of the people in the room. I noticed this year, at several Oscar-week awards shows and the Oscarcast too, that everybody was trying to incorporate his style. Unfortunately, most of what I saw was just mean, but not funny. You don’t want to be in his cross hairs, because Gervais by comparison is a skilled surgeon with a sharp scalpel.

“Working with YouTube is a fantastic opportunity for new content to be made available without the limitations of schedules and international restrictions,” Gervais said. “Viewing habits are changing. And anyone who doesn’t realise that will be left behind. I am very excited to be working with a platform that is so instant and accessible. And to catch up with David Brent is going to be fantastic.”

Here is a teaser trailer for Comic Relief that Gervais hatched to set the stage for Brent’s return:

staples center Philip Anschutz AEG

Philip Anschutz, the billionaire who controls Anschutz Entertainment Group, has canceled plans to sell the company, which includes such properties as the Los Angeles Staples Center, the Los Angeles Kings hockey team and London's O2 arena.

Anschutz said Thursday that the proposed sale, news of which broke in September, was put on ice because an acceptable buyer and offer had not been found.

“From the very beginning of the sales process, we have made it clear to our employees and partners throughout the world that unless the right buyer came forward with a transaction on acceptable terms we would not sell the company,” Anschutz said in a news release.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the sale of the company could have brought in as much as $7 billion.

In his statement, Anschutz said: “From the very first days of AEG, my vision has been to tie together world class real estate development structured around entertainment venues with premium sports and live entertainment content. In recent years we have developed related businesses to further promote and enhance the performance of AEG’s facilities for the benefit of our partners, including our sponsors, artists, consumers and the communities in which we operate."

AEG chairman Anschutz will resume a more active role in the company following the termination of the potential sale, with his The Anschutz Company retaining ownership of AEG.

The company also said Thursday that Tim Leiweke, who had served as the company's president and CEO since 1996, will leave AEG "by mutual agreement." He is being replaced by Dan Beckerman, a 15-year veteran of the company who previously served as it chief financial officer and chief operating officer.

News of the possible sale last year came as AEG seeks approval to build a stadium in downtown Los Angeles, in hopes of attracting an NFL team.

In AEG's release Thursday, Beckerman said that the stadium is still among the projects that the company is hotly pursuing.

"Priority projects going forward include the development of Farmers Field adjacent to our L.A. Live campus and the pursuit of our plan to bring the NFL back to Los Angeles," Beckerman said.

AEG is also collaborating with MGM to build a new arena in Las Vegas, among other projects.

Cheryl Tiegs Bel Air Home

Cheryl Tiegs, who claims to be America's first supermodel, has listed her gated Bel Air home for $12 million, according to celebrity real estate blog The Real Estalker.

Tiegs purchased the home back in 1996 for an unknown sum, and had the home redesigned in a Balinese style by Martyn Lawrence Bullard, a designer on Bravo's Million Dollar Decorator.

The listing through Rodeo Realty says the model's mansion is 4,770 square feet, and has five bedrooms, a wine cellar, eat-in kitchen, and views of downtown LA from the backyard.

In fact, the only thing that would be missing if you bought this home is the perpetually-gorgeous supermodel herself.

The home is in East Gate Bel Air and sits on 1.43 acres of property.

gavin smith

Police have found the car of the missing 20th Century Fox executive Gavin Smith.

Smith went missing May of last year after failing to pick up one of his three sons from school.

The 57-year-old was last seen leaving a friend's home May 1 in his 2000 Mercedes-Benz 420E.

The car was found last month in a Simi Valley storage locker in California.

L.A. Sheriff spokesman Steve Whitmore told Deadline they now believe Smith was likely murdered.

“Evidence in there and from other sources has led investigators in the case to preliminarily reclassify this as a homicide," said Whitmore. "While no body has been found, they believe it was a murder."

As of January, police were looking into John Creech as a person of interest in the case. Creech was the husband of a woman with whom Smith may have had an affair.

Creech is currently in custody due to unrelated drug charges.

Website findgavinsmith.com was set up to aid in the search for Smith. A $20,000 reward for information regarding his whereabouts is being offered.

Live Broadcast Captures The Moment Chinese Police Detain A British Reporter

A reporter for British-based TV News channel Sky News has been arrested live-on-air while filming in Beijing's Tiananmen Square.

Mark Stone and his cameraman, Andy Portch, were filming when they were approached by a police officer who told them to stop filming. Sky News says that they had pair had permission to film in the square, but they were apparently not showing their passes properly.

Stone continued reporting as police officers gathered to detain him, narrating his arrest to Sky News anchor, Anna Jones. As he was placed in a police van, he told Jones that the situation he was in was "surreal".

The video below shows Stone in the police van. At the end of the video, Sky News repeat footage of the moment Stone was arrested:

A spokesperson for Sky News told the Guardian's Josh Halliday that Stone was still being detained, but they expect him to be released shortly.

Stone, who has something of a reputation for being a tenacious reporter (witness these videos he filmed during the London riots), doesn't appear to have expected such an eventful day. Before he was detained today, he had tweeted this picture:

Matt Lauer May Be The Next 'Jeopardy' Host

$

0

matt lauer jeopardy

The $25 million Today show host who is now less popular than George Stephanopoulos is primed to become the next host of Jeopardy!, where he would seek to replace one of the most popular game-show hosts of all time. "The beleaguered host of the Today show is at the top of the list to take over the brainy game show when [Alex] Trebek steps down, as expected, in 2016," reportsThe New York Post today. Fans of the show were less than pleased, because everybody seems to hate Matt Lauer right now — but it's far from a done deal.

Indeed, if Lauer can't get his viewers or staffers to like him on the Today show in the mornings, how is he supposed to step in on one of the most heavily syndicated shows on television, as America is sitting down to dinner, and replace a man who's been asking answers for three decades? Lauer's strange week began on Monday when The Daily Beast's Howard Kurtz offered an "exclusive" interview with Lauer, peppered with lines from NBC executives trying to make up from the ratings dive after the allegedly Lauer-orchestrated ouster of Ann Curry— "You're [Lauer] the best person who's ever done this" was the sentiment, even if that's far from what the ratings say.

If Kurtz's piece read like an unrestrained press release from a network desperate to take the heat off of its fading star, The New York Times's Brian Stelter followed on Thursday with a report from inside the Today show itself. Notwithstanding his Q score being shaved in half since Curry's arrival  and dipping below that little guy over on ABC for the first time, Today staffers finally got to say what the executives couldn't — and what no game-show producer ever wants to hear:

The employees were reassured that Today viewers didn’t want their show to turn into Good Morning America, the ABC rival that has become Americans’ No. 1 choice in the mornings. But then they were told this: “What matters most is the anchor connection to the audience; what we need to work on is the connection.” As the word “connection” was repeated, some people in the room started to chuckle because of a name that went unspoken: Matt Lauer.

“What they meant was Matt. But no one would say it,” said a senior staff member who, like the others, spoke on condition of anonymity.

And now comes The Post's Michael Shain with an apparent exit strategy for the wounded Lauer, who appears to pull the levers at the former morning-show powerhouse even as his staff and audience are in something of a revolt. The Post reported earlier this week that Lauer wasn't planning to re-sign his $25-million-a-year contract, which expires in 2015. And that timing works: Trebek, who suffered a mild heart attack last June and has had his share of health problems despite neverending likability, is expected to step down from Jeopardy! in 2016, when he'll be close to 80 years old.

If the idea of Lauer ruining your favorite dinnertime quiz show is making you want to bang your head against a blue monitor, remember that nobody's looking at signing new contracts yet. A lot can happen in three years — including more talent scouting. The Post mentions that there's Jeopardy! host short list which also includes Anderson Cooper, whose contract also apparently runs out next year and is already spending time in syndication-land as CNN retools itself. And the Times's Stelter believes other, less high-profile hosts may still have a shot:

Meanwhile, Lauer's co-host Savannah Guthrie swears things are actually great over atToday. "Everything's good. We're hanging in. It's better than the press would have you believe," she told the Times's Stuart Elliott. To that, Jeopardy! fans might answer: This fired female host of a once-popular morning show set the stage for a predecessor who was afraid to say anything bad about her reviled draconian co-host. Who is Ann Curry? That would be correct.

7 Rap Songs That Have Hidden Financial Lessons

$
0

Jay Z, hip hop, rapper

Love the beats or hate them, there's no music more money-conscious than hip-hop.

But between the rhymes, rap stars actually have some legitimate financial advice, say the experts.

These tips, gleaned from hip-hop lyrics and interviews with rap moguls, can add Benjamins to your bank account.

"But once you get grown and out on your own/ Bills upon bills upon bills is what you have/ Before you get your check then you already spent half."

Lesson from: Common, Chapter 13 (Rich Man vs. Poor Man)"

While his peers brag about the G's they're stacking up, this rapper tells audiences on his 1994 album, "Resurrection," "Call me doberman 'cause I'm a pincher of pennies."

According to Richard E. Reyes, a CFP professional and president of Wealth and Business Planning Group LLC in Maitland, Fla., the way to escape the cycle of living paycheck to paycheck is keep your bills minimal, and, "Try always to pay yourself first." To do that, Reyes recommends saving 10 percent of your income in an emergency account until you have at least three to six months' of living expenses stockpiled, preferably more. If you can't save 10 percent at first, that's OK.

"Slowly but surely, we'll work our way up, but just start at something," he says. "Get used to having to do without that money."

"Floss a little; invest up in a mutual fund."

Lesson from: Busta Rhymes, "Dangerous"

Ignore the rest of the NSFW, or not safe for work, lyrics on this 1997 track, and Rhymes has some sound advice if you choose your investments wisely, says Sean M. Dowling, CFP professional and president of The Dowling Group Wealth Management in Stamford, Conn.

"I think the best place to start is what the actual objective of that mutual fund is, and does it fall in line with what you're trying to accomplish in your investment program," he says. "I think consideration should be given to the company, what their philosophies (are) ... their successes and failures, (and) how they've handled those."

Future investors should also research the cost. To avoid having your funds eaten up by fees, Dowling advises investors to seek mutual funds that keep costs around 1 percent for actively managed funds and around 0.5 percent for indexed or passively managed investments.

"Hold off on all the jewelry and the cars. Straight up ... (the rap business is) not a 9-to-5. You go to work for 40 hours a week, you're not going to get the same amount of money ... every week because it don't work like that."

Lesson from: Yung Joc, in an interview with HollywoodHeavy.com

After being named one of Forbes' 20 richest hip-hop artists in 2006, Joc warned new artists to avoid spending sprees and to "Be smarter than that with your money," in an interview with HollywoodHeavy.com.

Philip Lee, a CFP professional and wealth manager with Modera Wealth Management LLC in Boston, says that Joc's advice to save for lean times is especially relevant to those with fluctuating incomes. While an emergency fund of three to six months' savings may be sufficient for employees with a steady paycheck, business owners, freelance or contract workers, and those who rely on tips or commissions will need six to nine months' of living expenses.

Lee also recommends examining your yearly expenses and budgeting out how much you'll need to save per month to meet them.

"You want to try ... the best you can to even out your expenses, and match that to the savings that you might have," Lee says.

13 Things We Learned From 'The Walking Dead' Producer David Alpert

rick michonne the walking dead

We're three episodes away from the season 3 finale of "The Walking Dead."

With The Governor out for Michonne's blood, Merle (possibly) playing for the good guys again, and showrunner Glen Mazzara's recent departure, what's in store for Rick and the gang in the future?

Business Insider spoke with "The Walking Dead" producer David Alpert to get the low down on the rest of the action-packed season and what to expect now that Scott Gimple will be heading AMC's hit zombie show.

Alpert shared the direction for season four, actor Lennie James' return as Morgan and whether we'll see him again (don't count it out!), and if we may see another love interest for Rick down the line.

Get excited!

Warning:If you're not caught up, some spoilers may follow.

Yes, Rick is pretty much back to normal, for now.

If you couldn't tell from Rick's meeting with the Governor, his hometown trip the other week was his return to normalcy.

"I think you'll see that 'Clear,' [Season 3, episode 12], is really the beginning of something major for Rick. That sort brings him back from the brink," says Alpert. "This will always be a point for him where he decides, "You know what? Engagment is important, and I must do it, because it's not a life worth living without.'"

One point of Morgan's (Lennie James) return was to bring Rick back on point.

"This Morgan is a very damaged, very messed-up individual," says Alpert. "There is no hope for him. We felt it was important for Rick to have that turning point. We really needed Morgan to be messed up and sort of incredibly depressed and beyond redemption."

This may not be the last we see of Morgan (Lennie James).

"I think there's a real desire on everyone's part to see Lennie James again," says Alpert. "Morgan's character is fascinating. I think the rest of us fans want to see more of him, so I feel like there's a real opportunity. I don't know that it will necessarily be as part of the group in quite the same way. I hope we will see Lennie James again."

Morgan (Lennie James) was supposed to come back last season.

"We always figured we'd see him again at some point, we just didn't know when," said Alpert. "And, we sort of let the story dictate it. Even with the farm [in season 2] we talked about whether there was a way to bring him in … It never felt special enough."

"We were looking for how we could reward viewers who sort of remember him and how we could engage him in cumulative storytelling. We figured this was the best way to do that."

New Yorkers are coveting Kate Middleton's nose.

A Manhattan plastic surgeon said over 20 patients have signed up to get "royal rhinoplasty" next month alone, according to the UK's The Week.

Stephen Greenberg said he has received a number of requests for the Duchess of Cambridge's nose. Each cost about $7,000.

Greenberg told the New York Daily News, ""we have made a file of a dozen Kate Middleton pictures to show patients when they come in for their consultation."

More from GlobalPost: Is Kate Middleton, a.k.a. Duchess of Cambridge, expecting a daughter?

Patient Johanna Ricardi explained "it's just this cute, little perky nose. It's not too big. It's not too small. It will pretty much suit any type of face."

Dr. Thomas Romo at Manhattan's Lenox Hill hospital estimates he has performed more than 100 of the surgeries already, The Week reported.

"Women, especially over the age of 28, want the nose of a woman who is regal, refined and strong," Romo said.

The trend comes amid speculation over whether the Duchess, who is nine months pregnant, is expecting a girl.

Startup: Don't Pay Full Price For A Movie Ticket Anymore

$

With the cost of U.S. movie tickets rising, one startup is looking to revolutionize the market by allowing theatergoers to buy tickets for 30 to 60 percent off. And theater owners are beginning to buy in.

Dealflicks, a San Francisco-based company, is looking to do for the movie theater market what Hotwire.com and Priceline.com have done for the travel sector. Dealflicks CEO Sena Wycliffe recently told CNBC's "Squawk on the Street" that 88 percent of movie theater seats are left vacant — a void Dealflick hopes to fill.

Dealflicks now offers discounted prices for movies and concessions at roughly 1,000 locations nationwide. The startup has yet to strike a deal with larger movie-theater operators such as AMC and Regal theaters, part of the Regal Entertainment Group. Participating movie theaters set the discounted prices, which are available in real-time through their website and smartphone apps.

"Currently, we are letting the movie theaters set the pricing so tickets and concessions can be up to 60 percent off. They get to choose the show times and the movies. Typically, we get evenings, weekends even opening weekends as well," Wycliffe said.

Movie theaters are big business. Consumers shell out more than $40 billion on tickets and concessions annually. The average price of a movie ticket in 2012 was $7.96, hitting an all-time high of $8.12 last August, according to the National Association of Theater Owners. Ticket prices can exceed $10 in major cities including New York City.

Wycliffe got the idea for the company in 2011, when he went to see "The King's Speech" and was surprised that the movie theater was practically empty. The co-founders raised an initial $65,000 from friends and family to launch the company but membership in 500 Startups, an accelerator program for upstarts, helped the company "get into the spotlight in Silicon Valley," according to Wycliffe. Dealflicks officially launched in beta in July 2012.

(Read more: MakerBot: Making Cool Stuff With a Desktop 3-D Printer)

Growth in Apps, New Theater Locations

Dealflicks launched its first iPhone app on March 5, with more than 4,000 downloads and counting. "Things have been accelerating," said Wycliffe, who plans to roll out an Android app later this year.

Dealflicks is currently partnering with independent movie theaters and small chains in several metro areas, including Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta and the New York City tri-state area. Wycliffe estimates that the company is currently adding one to two new theater locations daily.

Wycliffe said the company is looking to partner with some of the big movie chains in 2013 and said that in conversations at South By Southwest, several large movie studios, including Warner Brothers and Disney "are very interested in our data."

"We are having a lot of fun and hope to fill a lot of empty movie theater seats," said Wycliffe. "Five years from now, we see ourselves generating a couple billion in revenue."

Soon after the CNBC TV interview, users on Twitter reported that the Dealflicks website and application were down. "There was so much traffic our server crashed momentarily," Wycliffe said in an email, "I guess not the worst problem to have!"

20 Directors You Should Follow On Twitter

judd apatow seth rogenHollywood directors know how to construct an interesting scene, but in the age of 140-character micro-blogging, more than a few know how to construct a quality tweet, too.

From snappy one-liners to opinions on topical issues to major casting announcements or the occasional sneak peek of a movie in production, filmmakers have a lot to offer through social media.

TheWrap first looked at tweet-worthy directors back in August 2010; the 2013 version finds a few still on our radar, and a good number we've just recently caught up with.

Kevin Smith

@ThatKevinSmith

Director-writer, "Clerks," "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back," "Chasing Amy," "Red State"

Why follow?: Smith, also on our 2010 list, regularly offers his unique brand of commentary on all things Hollywood -- and hockey. Plus, Twitter is the director's favorite place to announce major news about his upcoming projects and his career. Last December, he tweeted that his "last cinematic effort as a writer-director will be 'CLERKS III.'" Last week, he announced he had started to write the upcoming film's script. It's a safe bet that there will be more exciting developments to come.

"Don't believe the hype: Using hashtag #ClerksCast will NOT get you cast as an extra in CLERKS III. I'll let you know when it's casting time."

Be prepared for: Lots of promotion for his latest "Jay and Silent Bob" adventure, plus his AMC show, "Comic Book Men" and his weekly comedy show with KROQ radio personality Ralph Garman, "Hollywood Babble-On."

Paul Feig

@PaulFeig

Director, "Bridesmaids," "The Heat"

Why follow?: He's a funny guy who writes funny tweets, especially when live-tweeting an event like the Oscars. Or Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl.

Sample tweets:
"Release some of those kittens onto the field and let's have a real ending for this year's #PuppyBowl!"
"Is that a puppy cool down tub or is @AnimalPlanet just making soup? #PuppyBowlScandal"

Be prepared for: A whole lot of snappy one-liners, but not much discussion of anything else.

Darren Aronofsky

@DarrenAronofsky

Director, "Black Swan," "Requiem for a Dream," "Noah"

Why follow? Aronofsky has more of a sense of humor than his films suggest, best exemplified on Twitter by the pictures he shares. He's also unabashedly honest about things that really matter to him, like President Obama's State of the Union address -- a speech he's not afraid to admit made him cry.

Sample tweet:
"scared to ever walk near this again: pic.twitter.com/XxEsatiAdA"
"quite the #stateoftheunion. never cried before. and executive power threats on climate change! excited to witness this president rule."

Be prepared for: His thoughts on food he is currently eating, on television he is currently watching and very little mention of "Noah," that major movie he's currently making.

j

Top of the mornin' to ya, folks!

In honor of St. Patrick's Day, we're taking a look at ten actors from Irish descent. And some may surprise you.

Whether hailing from Ireland or Hollywood, each of the actors on our list are magically delicious — but no surprise considering they were born with the luck of the Irish.

Okay, we'll stop now and let you get to the good stuff.

10. Evanna Lynch

Birth place: Termonfeckin, County Louth, Ireland

Age: 21

Most well known films: Played Luna Lovegood in the "Harry Potter" series.

Irish ancestry: Born into a family of six in Ireland, Lynch often acted in school plays and attended a summer school for gifted teens in Dublin. After reading the "Harry Potter" books and becoming a fan, Lynch sent letters to author J.K. Rowling, who corresponded with Lynch during her two-year battle with anorexia at age 11 and 12.

In 2006, after auditioning for the role of Luna Lovegood at an open casting call in London among 15,000 other girls, Lynch was cast in the "Harry Potter" series at age 14. The actress made her on-screen debut in 2007's "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix."

9. Peter O'Toole

Birth place: Connemara, County Galway, Ireland

Age: 80

Most well known films: "Lawrence of Arabia" (1962), "The Lion in WInter" (1968), "My Favorite Year" (1982) O'Toole has been nominated for eight Oscars. In 2008, starred as Pope Paul III on "The Tudors."

Irish ancestry: After being born in Ireland, O'Toole was raised in England, where he still resides.

From the book "Fame and Obscurity":

Though Peter O'Toole remains an uprooted Irishman by choice, he leaves London and returns to Ireland every now and then to do some drinking, to play the horses at the Punchestown racetrack outside Dublin, and to spend some solitary hours thinking.

8. Stuart Townsend

Birth place: Howth, County Dublin, Ireland

Age: 40

Most well known films: "The League of Extraordinary Gentleman" (2003), "About Adam" (2000). Townsend made three movies with his former girlfriend of nine years, Charlize Theron: "Trapped" (2002), "Head in the clouds" (2004) and "Eon Flux" (2005).

Irish ancestry: Townsend was raised Irish Catholic by his professional golfer father and model mother. The actor began his career while attending the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin and later made his professional stage debut in 1994's "True Lines" which was a part of the Dublin Theatre Festival. Before fame, Townsend formed a theatre group with his friends in Dublin where they re-enacted a popular childrens' show.
