First Lady Michelle Obama made a surprise appearance at the Oscars on Sunday night via video to announce that "Argo" had won the Best Picture award.

Obama was introduced by Jack Nicholson and said she was thrilled to introduce the nine Best Picture nominees.

"I am so honored to help introduce this year's nominees for best picture and to help celebrate the movies that lift our spirits, broaden our minds and transport us to places we have never imagined," Obama said.

"These nine movies took us back in time and all around the world they made us laugh, they made us weep and they made us grip our armrests just a little tighter. They taught us that love can endure against all odds and transform our lives in the most surprising ways, and they reminded us that we can overcome any obstacle if we dig deep enough and fight hard enough and find the courage to believe in ourselves."

After she announced "Argo" as the winner, she followed up on Twitter:

Ben Affleck Oscars 2013 speech

Ben Affleck may have been snubbed for a Best Director nod at this year's Oscars, but his passion project "Argo" took home Best Picture during Sunday night's show.

But instead of using his podium time to hold a grudge against the academy, Affleck gave a heartfelt speech in which he thanked his wife, children and reminisced about his first Oscar win for "Good Will Hunting" when he was "just a kid."

When thanking his wife, actress Jennifer Garner, Affleck said, "It's work, it's the best kind of work...and there's no one else I'd rather work with."

The choked up director/actor/producer then thanked his three young children and quickly walked off-stage before the tears started to run. Watch below at 5:05.

Iran Media Slams Argo's Oscar Win As 'The Most Political Oscar Ever'

Argo Ben Affleck

Iranian media on Monday scoffed at Hollywood's awarding of its top honour to Ben Affleck's Iran hostage drama "Argo", branding it a "political" win while poking fun at US first lady Michelle Obama's surprise appearance at the Oscar ceremony.

The 85th Academy Awards is "the most political Oscar ever," Iran's state television said as it reported the news that "Argo" had won the coveted best film Oscar. Iranian officials have not immediately reacted.

The Iranian state broadcaster accused "Argo" director and star Affleck of specialising "in exaggeration, blowing things out of proportion and creating false scenes."

"Argo" recounts the long-classified CIA plot to extract six US hostages out of revolutionary Iran, who managed to evade Islamist students storming the US embassy in Tehran on November 4, 1979.

The other 52 hostages were held for 444 days in an action that caused the rupture of diplomatic ties between Washington and Tehran.

Although "Argo" takes liberties with history by its makers' own admission, the movie has racked up a rash of honours on the awards circuit.

The movie's Oscar win was announced by US first lady Obama in an unprecedented satellite appearance from the White House.

Iran's state television said her involvement "increases speculation that awarding this movie was politically motivated."

The Fars news agency, affiliated with the Revolutionary Guards, branded "Argo" as an "anti-Iran movie" financed by a "Zionist company" -- in a reference to the California-based Warner Bros. which produced it.

Fars was also critical of Obama and her silver low cut gown, which would be banned in the Islamic republic under its strict dress code for women.

A photo of Obama announcing "Argo" as the winner appeared to have been altered -- her dress is shown covering her shoulders, in contrast to the original which shows her bare-shouldered.

Doctoring of pictures is not uncommon in Iran.

In 2011, Iranian newspapers published an altered picture of EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton that covered up her cleavage. She was at the time heading the P5+1 group of United States, Russia, China, Britain, France plus Germany in talks with Iran over its controversial nuclear drive.

Those talks are to resume after an eight-month hiatus on Tuesday in the Kazakh city of Almaty.

Iran and the United States are locked in a tense showdown over an array of issues, including Tehran's nuclear ambitions which the West and Israel suspect are aimed at military objectives, despite Iran's repeated denials.

Iran's contempt of Hollywood is no secret.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei last Wednesday criticised it as a "totally political" machine that propagates policies brewed in Washington.

"Hollywood is totally political. Otherwise it would have let our anti-Zionist movies participate in film festivals," he said in remarks reported by his Khamenei.ir website.

"Producing political anti-Iranian movies and giving awards to anti-Iranian movies is a clear sign that politics is mixed with art in the US," Khamenei added in an allusion to "Argo".

Hollywood in 2007 drew the wrath of Iranians for its Spartan war epic "300," a smash hit in the United States for its gory tale of the Greco-Persian wars which depicted Iranians as bloodthirsty.

The relationship between the entertainment industry and Iranians however was somewhat repaired in 2012 when Iran won its first ever Oscar, with "A Separation" in the best foreign-language category.

Jennifer Lawrence took home the award for best actress last night for her role in "Silver Linings Playbook."

Lawrence had a little fall when she walked on stage, so of course a lot of questions focused on her tumble in her interview with the press after accepting her award.

What was the 22-year-old actress thinking when she fell down?

"A bad word. That I can't say. That starts with F," Lawrence joked.

Lawrence handled the questions perfectly. She made what could have been totally boring and pointless questions really fun:

An updated NYC Celebrity Star Map by apartment search site Rentenna.com just came out last week.

Unsurprisingly, most of the celebs were congregated in the same neighborhoods: The swanky West Village, SoHo, Greenwich Village, and TriBeCa neighborhoods were all well represented. Looking uptown, the Upper West Side and Midtown (right below Central Park) also had a number of famous residents.

Though Brooklyn does not appear in detail on the map, Rentenna.com did provide a list of the A-list stars living across the bridge, too.

Adele Might Get Into Musicals After Winning An Oscar For 'Skyfall'

Adele says that she may be involved in a Beyoncé-style documentary or musical after winning an Oscar for best original song.

Follow all the reaction to the Oscars with our live blog

British singer Adele added an Oscar to her collection of Grammys and Brit awards last night, as she won in the best original song category for the Skyfall theme. However, according to a backstage interview, the singer has even bigger plans ahead.

Adele joked about future projects which could land her potential Emmy and Tony awards, seeing her join the list of 'EGOT' stars - those who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.

"Maybe I'll do an HBO special like Beyoncé did!" Adele mused: "A Tony I'm not so sure, maybe someday I'll do a musical."

Adele has won the first Oscar for a Bond film in 47 years, when Thunderball won in the special visual effects category. She explained backstage that the rumours that Skyfall was recorded in 10 minutes were untrue: instead it took two studio sessions. She said recording the Bond theme was "one of the proudest moments of my life".

The song went on to become Adele's first to appear in the Billboard Hot 100 in the Top 10 during its first week.

The Oscar continues a golden year for Adele. At the 2012 Grammys last February she won in all six categories for which she was nominated, and won two Brit awards shortly after. She later won two Ivor Novello Awards, for Songwriter of the Year and for her song Rolling in the Deep.

Her second album, 21, saw Adele break chart records previously held by artists such as Whitney Houston, Judy Garland and Carole King. Notably, the album broke the record for the longest number one album by a woman in Billboard history, after 21 non-consecutive weeks at the top spot.

In January it was revealed that 21 was the first since Michael Jackson's Thriller to be the best-selling release in America for two years running.

In October Adele gave birth to her first son, after a pregnancy kept well away from the public eye.

The Funniest Moment From Michelle Obama's Surprise Oscar Appearance

First Lady Michelle Obama made a cameo at the Academy Awards last night, where she joined Jack Nicholson in presenting the award for Best Picture.

Even White House reporters were surprised by the appearance, which was kept under wraps by the First Lady's press office.

But the most startling moment of the presentation came when Nicholson asked his co-presenter to announce the winner, and appeared to refer to the First Lady by her last name only.

"Obama, do you have your envelope?"

It's possible that the "Mrs." was simply cut off, but that didn't stop Michelle Obama and her aides from chuckling.

Here's How Oreo Tried To Win The Oscars On Twitter

You probably can't sleep if you're on Oreo's social media team.

After the cookie company's clever — and immediate — reaction to the Super Bowl blackout with a tweet that read "You can still dunk in the dark," Oreo has become the go-to brand for quick tweets on notable pop culture moments, complete with original artwork as well.

During the Grammy's, Oreo celebrated Justin Timberlake's musical turn by tweeting a picture of a cookie with a bow tie that read, "Bringing Tasty Back," (a reference to Timberlake's "Bringing Sexy Back").

It also brought its game face to Twitter for the Academy Awards.

Oreo's first Tweet was a reference to "Wreck It Ralph," which was nominated for best animated film:

oreo oscars twitter wreck it ralph

Then, during the James Bond tribute, Oreo paid its own homage to the international man of mystery by recreating the films' famous gun barrel sequence:oreo james bond oscars

Of course, Oreo noted that everyone wasn't watching the Oscars. The cookie's Twitter account also gave a "Walking Dead" shoutout since the show was competing with the Academy Award broadcast:oreo oscars twitter walking dead

And finally, Oreo was there for biggest award of all: the best picture category. As soon as "Argo" won, Oreo tweeted a reference to its plot:oreo oscars twitter argo

While the Super Bowl tweet was completely off-the-cuff — no one expected a blackout in the middle of the biggest live broadcast of the year! — we're suspecting that many of these reactions were already ready to go by the time a winner was announced on TV.

Oreo even created a hashtag, #OREOmotionpics, for the affair.

Even though none of these tweets had the viral success of the blackout reaction, Oreo has cemented a spot as a real-time marketer to watch.

Anthony Bourdain Gave Some Very Candid Answers In His Reddit 'Ask Me Anything'

anthony bourdain reddit

Restaurateur, chef, and TV personality Anthony Bourdain answered questions in a Reddit "Ask Me Anything" session earlier today.

The notoriously forthright "No Reservations" host, who will host a show on CNN starting this spring, offered up some fantastic responses to fans' questions on everything from his favorite foods to his past drug use.

Here are a couple of highlights from the conversation.

What prompted the move to CNN? Was it issues with Travel Channel a la the Cadillac product integration debacle, or simply a chance to do something in a different vain than "No Reservations"?

CNN is letting me and my crew make smarter TV in places that Travel never would have allowed. Also--the new regime at Travel were a pretty unpleasant, uninspiring bunch. I saw the writing on the wall.

What was your favorite episode of "No Reservations" you ever did?

I'm proudest of Rome. Because everybody said it was the stupidest idea ever--to make food porn in black and white.

Which was harder to master? The art of cooking or the art of writing?

Cooking professionally is hard work. Writing is a privilege and a luxury. Anybody who whines about writers block should be forced to clean squid all day.

What is something you never want to taste again?

Methadone

If you had to have one last drink in this lifetime, what would it be, where would it be, and who would you share it with?

I'd like to have a beer and a meat pie with Keith Richards.

How did you manage to get Alton Brown to a strip club, and then make him say "Make it rain"?

My proudest accomplishment. Watching Alton Brown at the Clermont. Im sure the people at Food Net were browning their shorts.

You openly admit to being an ex-addict. Plenty of ex-addicts can't drink at all, because if they do it tumbles into drugs again. How are you able to still drink and continue to live your lifestyle without slipping?

I am a VERY unusual case. You are correct. Most people who kick heroin and cocaine have to give up on everything. Maybe cause my experiences were so awful in the end, I've never been tempted to relapse.

Why Anne Hathaway Was Wearing A Dress That Made It Look Like She Had A Wardrobe Malfunction

anne hathaway Oscars 2013

If you were watching the Oscars last night you may have had your attention diverted from Anne Hathaway's face in favor of her dress.

From a mile away, it looked like you could see through the top of Hathaway's pale pink Prada gown.

The two big seams in the dress acting like arrows didn't help either.

Considering Oscar outfits are often planned out far in advance, wouldn't someone have caught this fashion faux pas ahead of time?

Maybe not.

On the red carpet, Hathaway divulged that she decided three hours before the Oscars to go with the Prada dress instead of a pre-planned Valentino.

And, this was after Valentino sent out a press release announcing Hathaway would be wearing one of its couture gowns.

It all boils down to a last minute decision.

Jennifer Lawrence continues to make America fall in love with her. Before the Oscars, where Lawrence took home the best actress award, she was too busy and stressed to eat. But when she arrived on the red carpet she was starving and knew she would never make it through the long show without eating.

Seeing McDonalds across the street, Lawrence had her handler order her a happy meal. During an interview with MTV's Josh Horowitz, Lawrence stopped talking to tell ask her handler to make sure they were going to bring fries and ketchup, too (via Gossip Cop):
