The Crown

The Emmys air Monday night, and after watching you'll probably want to catch up on some of the most highly regarded shows on television that were honored this year. And we're here to make that easier for you.

We know what it's like to spend more time figuring out what to watch than actually watching something, so every week we gather a list of three great shows you should binge on Netflix. Here, you'll find shows you can finish quickly, and some you can just get started on.

This week, we selected three TV shows available to watch on Netflix that were nominated for Emmys.

The 70th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by "SNL's" Colin Jost and Michael Che, will air live on Monday, September 17 on NBC at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT) from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

From British royal drama "The Crown" to the brilliant afterlife comedy "The Good Place," here are some great Emmy-nominated TV shows you can binge on Netflix this week.

"American Vandal"

2018 Emmy nomination: Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie or a Dramatic Special

Seasons: 2

Episodes: 16

"American Vandal" is just as addictive as the true crimes docs it's satirizing. It's also just as funny as it is poignant, and deserved more major Emmy nominations than it got. It's one of the absolute best shows on TV right now, with clever writing that is a comment on so many aspects of our culture — from the way we use social media to corrupt, classist high schools, to how we consume. Each episode is about 30 minutes, so it's an easy show to binge.

"The Good Place"

2018 Emmy nominations: Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (Ted Danson), Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series (Maya Rudolph)

Seasons: 2

Episodes: 26

"The Good Place" is the most ambitious show on TV right now. In season two, which recently became available on Netflix, the writers delivered more and more unexpected narrative and character twists, and broadened its fictional world without confusing fans or making them exhausted from many dramatic eye-rolls (sorry "Westworld"). Its season-two finale teased a completely different format for the series that promises an even bigger, better, and more gutsy third season premiering September 27. The performances, particularly from Ted Danson and the supporting cast, make it even more special.

"The Crown"

2018 Emmy nominations: Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series (Claire Foy), Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (Vanessa Kirby),
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (Matt Smith), Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series (Matthew Goode), Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Supporting Role

Already won (at the Creative Arts Emmys): Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series, Outstanding Period Costumes

Seasons: 2

Episodes: 20

"The Crown" is somehow slightly boring but incredibly gripping a the same time. Even if you're a history buff and know exactly what will happen to these characters, "The Crown" is impeccably made and the astounding performances make it so special. It's a great, calming show to have on while you're doing things around your house, especially if you've already seen it.

  • Paul McCartney's recent album, "Egypt Station," has become his first Billboard No. 1 album in over 36 years.
  • "Egypt Station" is McCartney's eighth No. 1 album and his first since 1982's "Tug of War."

Paul McCartney's recently released 18th solo album, "Egypt Station," has become his first Billboard No. 1 album in over 36 years, Billboard reported.

The album moved 153,000 equivalent album units, with 147,000 copies in traditional album sales, which exceeded Billboard's early prediction of its debut.

According to Billboard, "Egypt Station" is McCartney's eighth No. 1 album (including his albums with Wings) and his first since 1982's "Tug of War." (He also scored 19 No. 1 albums with The Beatles, the most all time of any artist or group.)

"Egypt Station" is the first of McCartney's solo albums to debut at No. 1 on the chart, and it's also his best-selling LP in over a decade, since his album "Memory Almost Full" debuted at No. 3 in 2007 with 161,000 copies sold.

McCartney backed the release of "Egypt Station" with a noteworthy promotional campaign, which included a lengthy profile with GQ, and appearances on "The Howard Stern Show," "The Tonight Show," and Marc Maron's WTF podcast.

McCartney addressed the news of his No. 1 debut in a tweet on Sunday, writing: "Thanks to all our fabulous fans and the whole team behind this record for making it number one - yippee! Love Paul x."

"Egypt Station" has been well reviewed by critics since its release. It currently holds a 73% rating on the reviews aggregator Metacritic.

MoviePass competitor Sinemia has launched an unlimited movie-ticket subscription plan for $29.99

Movie theater

  • MoviePass rival Sinemia is now offering an unlimited movie-ticket subscription plan for $29.99 a month.
  • This is the first unlimited plan since MoviePass ditched its popular $9.99 one in August.

As MoviePass has pulled back its movie-theater subscription service to cater to the casual moviegoer, Sinemia wants to be the new home for power users.

In a press release sent out on Monday, Sinemia announced it has launched the $29.99 unlimited plan for 2D movies in the US, Canada, and Australia.

“While most of our plans are focused on the modern moviegoer who sees one, two, or three  movies each month, we want to serve every type of movie lover and that includes frequent moviegoers looking for an unlimited tickets option,” said Rifat Oguz, CEO and founder of Sinemia in the release. “We’ve spent  four years testing and fine-tuning our unlimited tickets model and are confident this is the right price to sustainably offer such a plan.”

Sinemia's unlimited plan is the first since MoviePass scrapped its popular unlimited $9.99 plan in August for a more realistic $9.95 for three movies per month (previous to 2017, MoviePass' unlimited plan ranged from $50 to $35 per month).

Sinemia has worked hard to find a fan base in the US as it does in other regions of the world, and it's certainly getting to a point where audiences (and the industry) have to begin to take notice.

For months, it's been a vocal competitor of MoviePass, having put together numerous tiered plans ranging from one movie to three per month, with options for IMAX and family plans. And in late August, a survey from the National Research Group revealed that Sinemia's two movies for $7.99 per month was the most popular movie-ticket subscription plan among moviegoers.

Riding that momentum, Sinemia is swinging for the fences with its unlimited plan. Here's hoping it works out better than it did for MoviePass.

land of steady habits

  • Netflix's new original film, "The Land of Steady Habits," has earned positive reviews from film critics.
  • The film stars Ben Mendelsohn as a Connecticut father who, in the throes of a mid-life crisis, retires from his job in finance and leaves his wife.

Netflix's new original movie, "The Land of Steady Habits," earned positive reviews from film critics ahead of its premiere on the service Friday.

The film stars Ben Mendelsohn ("Rogue One: A Star Wars Story") as Anders Hill, a Connecticut father who, in the throes of a mid-life crisis, retires from his job in finance and leaves his wife.

"The Land of Steady Habits" is based on a 2014 novel of the same name by Ted Thompson.

Here's how Netflix described the film in a release:

"Into his mid fifties and newly retired, his grown son's college tuitions paid in full, Anders decides he's had enough of steady habits: he leaves his wife (Edie Falco), buys a condo, and waits for freedom to transform him. Stripped of the comforts of his previous identity, Anders embarks on a clumsy, and heartbreaking journey to reconcile his past with his present."

The film was written and directed by Nicole Holofcener, who also wrote the screenplay for the acclaimed upcoming movie "Can You Ever Forgive Me?," which stars Melissa McCarthy in a true story of a biographer who sold forged letters from famous authors. Holofcener's last directorial effort was the 2013 romantic comedy "Enough Said," which starred Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini.

"The Land of Steady Habits" currently has an 84% "fresh" rating on the reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and most critics had praise for Holofcener's directing and script.

"Laying it all out with a piercing authenticity, Holofcener makes us hope that the wait till her next feature is not quite so long," Kenneth Turan wrote in a review for the Los Angeles Times.

"No detail ever seems to go unnoticed in Holofcener's world, and viewers could spend the entire running time simply admiring her powers of surveillance," Elizabeth Weitzman wrote in a review for The Wrap.

Nintendo is about to start charging $20/year for online features on the Switch console — here's how its service stacks up against PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (NTDOY, MSFT, SNE)

$

nintendo switch vs playstation 4Since its launch in March 2017, owners of the Nintendo Switch console have been able to play games like "Splatoon 2" and "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" online for free.

Nintendo was the last major console maker to offer free online multiplayer services, but the launch of the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service marks the end of an era for the console — and for online gaming in general.

Starting September 18th, all console gamers on the current generation of systems, which include Microsoft’s Xbox One, Sony’s PlayStation 4, and the Nintendo Switch, will need to pay for a premium service to play their games online with friends and other players around the world. Switch Online will be significantly less expensive than Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus, but players may be getting less bang for their buck with the Nintendo service.

Let's dive in to how the three services stack up:

Nintendo Switch Online: the price is low, but at what cost?

Nintendo Switch Online will start at $20 a year with options to pay $3.99 for one month or $7.99 for three months. There is also a $34.99 family plan for those with multiple Switch consoles, allowing up to eight different Switch consoles under a single account.

And for those with other Nintendo consoles, it's worth noting that Nintendo’s paid online service remains specific to the Switch; Nintendo 3DS handhelds and Wii U consoles will continue to offer free online multiplayer.

PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold share the same pricing.

In comparison, PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold have identical pricing structure at $59.99 per year, $9.99 for one month and $24.99 for 3 months. Sony began charging customers for online multiplayer with the launch of the PlayStation 4 in 2013, while Xbox Live Gold has always been a requirement for online play for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One consoles.

Switch Online launches with 20 NES games, with more classics to be released each month.

As a part of Nintendo Switch Online, subscribers will receive access to 20 games from the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) including “Super Mario Bros,” “Donkey Kong” and “The Legend of Zelda.”

These titles will be playable online as well, and “Super Mario Bros.” will feature a co-op mode for the first time. Nintendo has hinted it might release more classics in the future, but so far the offerings are restricted to NES games. Classic Nintendo titles are otherwise not for sale in the Switch eShop.

How to get a job at Netflix, and what it's like to work there

Reed hastings

  • Netflix has a notably unique company culture, which its CEO Reed Hastings once outlined the philosophy of in a 2009 slide deck.
  • Drawing from a recent LinkedIn Q&A with Netflix and from a 2016 Reddit AMA hosted by a Netflix employee, we've compiled a list of quotes on the company's hiring process and culture.

Netflix is famous for its unique company culture, which does not tolerate either failing employees or "brilliant jerks."

The company recently held a LinkedIn Q&A where users could ask questions about its culture and philosophy, and its answers largely echoed a famous slide deck CEO Reed Hastings released in 2009 to summarize Netflix's management philosophy.

Though the company has morphed significantly since then, diving into original content and expanding across the globe, Netflix has maintained a commitment to its culture.

That means that working at Netflix isn’t quite like working anywhere else, and neither is getting hired there.

Drawing from a 2016 Reddit AMA hosted by a purported Netflix employee and from last week's LinkedIn Q&A, we've compiled the following essential quotes on Netflix's hiring process and company culture:

The interview (via Reddit):

About 40-50% of the interview is about making sure your personality is compatible with our company culture. The rest is about making sure you're technically capable … They flew me out and interviewed me for eight hours. It seemed really easy at the time, but I now realize that a lot of the questions were checking that my personality was a fit for the company. No crazy technical questions that I hate.”

Culture fit was a big part of the hiring (via Reddit):

“You'll talk to about eight or so people, some from HR, some higher-ups, some of the team you're applying to. Typically if even a single person doesn't like you, it's unlikely you'll be hired. Ultimately the decision is with the team that's hiring but it's very rare for them to overrule a single ‘no.’”

There's a list of qualities they expect in an employee (via LinkedIn):

"You need to have relevant experience for the role you are applying for and on top of that, when you interview in person, demonstrate qualities that showcase Netflix values. Are you courageous? Are you humble? Are you curious and passionate and ask thoughtful questions about the business? Are you able to and open to providing and receiving feedback to be better? Are you scrappy, have grit and willing to roll up your sleeves regardless of your title? Are you a team player? Are you inclusive and self aware? These are all things we look for."

No one cares where you went to school (via Reddit):

“I'm a college dropout. I haven't heard a single person discuss education or degrees. When you're working with people who have 5, 10, or even more years of experience education doesn't matter anymore. It's all about what problems you have the knowledge to solve.”

There’s independence with responsibility (via Reddit):

“At every other place I've worked, there's a very strict hierarchy and everyone is working on whatever the orders from up high are. In a sense that's also true at Netflix, but the orders are less orders and more context about what the big picture is and what is going on with the numbers. And everyone is expected to pitch in in their own way. You can give someone a problem and they can solve it without going back and asking you for the exact procedure.”

On whether you can binge-watch Netflix at work (via LinkedIn):

"Freedom and responsibility — you choose how you want to spend your day doing what," a company representative responded on LinkedIn. "No one is saying you can or cannot do something, but you have to be responsible in moving the business and making an impact. For some teams it is necessary to watch our titles because they work on them."

"To be candid, there are a lot of fast-paced and exciting projects happening, so there probably isn't time or as much of a priority to catch up with personal Netflix viewing."

You have to perform (via Reddit):

“Netflix is definitely more cutthroat about firing ‘dead weight’ than every other company I worked for. If you're not working out for whatever reason, there's no reason to keep you.”

This person also said there weren’t any real “entry-level positions.” So if you were looking to get hired straight out of college, you’re probably out of luck. Though there are definitely people who have begun their Netflix careers in their mid-20s.

The "best" and "worst" part of the job are the same (via LinkedIn):

"The best thing is the freedom to do whatever you think is necessary to move the business forward. The worst thing is that nobody will tell you how to spend your time or what exactly you should be working on (outside of setting larger goals for your role). Determining which projects will truly be impactful is up to you, and sometimes that is really hard."

Imax CEO says he's in 'active discussions' with streaming services like Netflix about releasing their movies (IMAX)

  • Imax CEO Richard Gelfond said at a conference his company is in "active discussions" with streaming services about showing their original content on a large-format screen.
  • Gelfond said he would respect the exclusive theatrical window if Imax shows any streaming titles.

Would you leave your couch to see a Netflix movie on an Imax screen?

That's the crux of discussions the leading large-format screen company is having with not just Netflix, but all of the streaming services.

Imax CEO Richard Gelfond said during a session at Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference that his company had been in "active discussions" about streaming original movies getting the Imax treatment.

"Over time, to me, it's inevitable that these big blockbusters that people are spending all this money on, are going to have a theatrical release and I think almost certainly an Imax release," Gelfond said.

Imax has already gone down this road with Netflix in the past.

Netflix's 2016 movie, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny," the sequel to the Oscar-winning 2000 original, was quietly shown on 10-12 Imax screens when AMC allowed the movie to be on large-format screens in select theaters in New Jersey and California during the movie's opening weekend. (The box-office results for those screenings were never reported).

Gelfond said any deal Imax had with a streaming title would respect the 90-day exclusive theatrical window currently in place for all theatrical releases. That's a surprising development since all the major movie chains generally will not show Netflix movies as the streamer never obeys the 90-day theatrical window. (In contrast, movies relased by Amazon have a traditional theatrical release before streaming.)

But this may be the latest indication that Netflix is more willing to respect the theatrical window.

Gelfond's comments come on the heels of reports that Netflix is going to give an expanded exclusive theatrical run to its award season hopeful, Alfonso Cuarón's "Roma," that way it doesn't get slighted like the streaming giant has in the past with titles like previous Oscar hopeful, "Beasts of No Nation."

An Imax source told Business Insider that the discussions with streaming companies are still in the early phases, but it's not hard to imagine consumer interest in seeing streaming titles on Imax, especially if they are shown there first.

Looking forward, there's the sequel to the Will Smith sci-fi movie "Bright" and Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman" on Netflix that would be great to see on an Imax screen. Maybe even the first few episodes of Amazon's upcoming "Lord of the Rings" series would be worth watching on a large screen before binge-watching back home. And there's also Apple's content coming soon.

Regulators from more than a dozen countries are looking to crack down on 'loot boxes,' a controversial video gaming practice that could be too much like gambling (EA)

Clash Royale (loot box)

  • European regulators are questioning whether video games featuring random prizes you have to pay real money to get are the equivalent of gambling.
  • During a meeting of the Gambling Regulators European Forum, 15 European regulators and the Washington State Gambling Commission signed a joint statement expressing concerns over loot boxes, skin betting and other similar practices.
  • Belgium and the Netherlands have already declared that loot boxes violate their national gambling laws, and have banned the practice.
  • Belgium recently announced a criminal investigation of game publisher Electronic Arts for its continued implementation of a loot box system in its recent "FIFA 19."

The video gaming industry continue to come under fire for including "loot boxes" and other randomized content for purchase in recent titles.

The Gambling Regulators European Forum released a joint statement signed by regulators from 15 European countries and the Washington State Gambling Commission on September 17, expressing concern that the prize systems in some high-profile games are tantamount to gambling.

"We are increasingly concerned with the risks being posed by the blurring of lines between gambling and other forms of digital entertainment such as video gaming," the statement reads. "Concerns in this area have manifested themselves in controversies relating to skin betting, loot boxes, social casino gaming and the use of gambling themed content within video games available to children."

Loot boxes are packages containing digital items for use in-game, and that can earned by playing or by purchase. The items inside each virtual box are randomized, with odds of encountering each set by the developer — some especially rare items come with really long odds. In some cases, the items inside a loot box can enhance the player's gameplay, creating an added incentive to spend real money to acquire a digital item faster.

Halloween loot boxes Overwatch

In the statement, the regulators' forum compared the practice of including loot boxes to online gambling, and said the regulators involved will continue to push back in the interest of consumer protection.

The forum also plans to continue raising awareness so that parents can better identify when their children's video games are promoting what could be seen as gambling. As regulators continue to define the line between video games and gambling, they said it would be in the best interest of developers to engage in conversations with regulatory authorities to ensure that their games are not in violation of the gambling laws in each market.

Star Wars Battlefront 2

Last year the implementation of loot boxes in "Star Wars: Battlefront II" garnered attention from the U.S. Congress for what it saw as predatory tactics —  the development team's response defending the practice is the most disliked comment ever on Reddit. The fierce backlash led to monetized loot boxes being removed completely, in favor of free in-game rewards.

Loot boxes are still featured prominently in several popular games, including "Overwatch," "FIFA 19," "PlayerUnkown's BattleGrounds," and "NBA 2K19." For some titles, like "Counter-Strike: Global Offensive" and "DOTA 2," players will even wager or sell cosmetic items from loot boxes, creating small grey-market economies.

Belgium and the Netherlands have been leading the charge against loot boxes, having declared the business model illegal in April 2018. Following an investigation, Belgium's Gaming Commission found "FIFA 18," "Overwatch" and "Counter-Strike: Global Offensive" to be in violation of its gambling laws.

In response, "Overwatch," "NBA 2K19," and other games have disabled the sale of loot boxes in both countries. Overwatch publisher Activision Blizzard had already begun publishing the odds for each item in the loot boxes in order to comply with a new set of Chinese regulations. Apple implemented a similar rule for iPhone games in December 2017.

The

However, Electronic Arts still plans to include loot boxes for sale in "FIFA 19," leading Belgium to declare a criminal investigation into the company earlier this month.

In "FIFA 19," players can purchase card packs to build their own soccer team in the game's Ultimate Team Mode, with rare cards helping to build a stronger squad. EA said it plans to publish the odds for each card pack, but that may not be enough to satisfy Belgian authorities. "FIFA 19" will release on September 28th, and the company has said it plans to continue working with regulators.

MoviePass' parent company wants approval for a dramatic reverse stock split of up to 1-for-500, just months after its 1-for-250 one failed to stabilize the stock (HMNY)

MoviePass

  • MoviePass' parent company, Helios and Matheson Analytics, will propose a reverse stock split of up to 1-for-500 to its shareholders in a special meeting next month.
  • It's the latest attempt by the struggling movie-ticket subscription service to not have the HMNY stock be delisted by the Nasdaq in mid-December.

Next month, MoviePass will try its most dramatic step yet to revive its failing stock.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday, the movie-ticket subscription service's parent company, Helios and Matheson Analytics (HMNY), said it would hold a special meeting with stockholders on October 18 to approve an amendment for a one-time reverse stock split of up to 1-for-500 shares.

This follows HMNY's 1-for-250 reverse stock split in August, which shot the stock up from $0.09 temporarily before it crashed back down again. HMNY stock is currently trading at around $0.02.

In the filing, HMNY said this new stock split could range from 1-for-2 to 1-for-500. But if history is a guide, HMNY will come in at the very upper end of that range. When voting in August, shareholders approved a reverse split range from 1-for-2 to 1-for-250. The next day, HMNY did the reverse split at 1-for-250.

HMNY said in the filing that the reverse split was necessary since the company will have to raise more capital, presumably by continuing to sell stock, which has been its playbook to cover losses this year.

"Although MoviePass recently has implemented significant cost cutting measures which have had an immediate and materially positive effect in reducing the Company’s monthly cash deficit, the Company believes it will continue to need to raise capital to fund MoviePass until MoviePass becomes cash flow positive or profitable (of which there is no assurance)," HMNY said in the filing.

The bolder 1-for-500 is the latest attempt by HMNY to revive the stock, which if it continues trading below $1 could be delisted from the Nasdaq by mid-December. And as HMNY states in the filing, that would make things even more challenging for the cash-strapped company.

"If the Company is unable to maintain its Nasdaq listing, its access to capital will become further limited and it may not have sufficient capital to enable MoviePass to continue its operations or become cash flow positive or profitable," HMNY said.

The stock will need to stay at $1 or above for 10 straight trading days for it to no longer be at risk of being delisted, according to Nasdaq. But even that might not a stop a delisting.

"Even if another reverse stock split enables us to regain compliance with the Minimum Bid Price Requirement, the Company may be delisted due to other Nasdaq listing criteria deficiencies, including the failure to maintain the minimum required market value of listed shares equal to at least $35 million and the failure to have at least three independent directors on the audit committee of the Board and a majority of independent directors on the Board," HMNY said. "Further, the reverse split may not result in a per share price that would attract brokers and investors who do not trade in lower priced stocks."

HMNY bought MoviePass last August and since has burned through hundreds of millions of dollars to try to make the company a disrupter in the movie-theater business. Currently all it has to show are over three million subscribers, massive losses, and competition in the form of AMC, Cinemark, and Alamo Drafthouse creating ticket subscription service deals for their own customers.

Alex Borstein Emmy

The 70th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Colin Jost and Michael Che, are happening tonight live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. And this is the home for updates on all the winners throughout the night.

The nominees for this year's Emmys were announced in July, and "Game of Thrones" and Netflix led the pack. "Thrones" has 22 nominations, while Netflix is the leading network with 112.

The first award of the night went to Henry Winkler for his work in best supporting actor in "Barry," the HBO comedy series. Later, "Barry" star Bill Hader won the Emmy for best lead actor in a comedy series. And Amazon's "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" picked up four awards early in the night for best supporting actress, best writing for a comedy, best lead actress in a comedy, and best directing for a comedy.

It looks like the night will be a battle between HBO's blockbuster fantasy and Hulu's "The Handmaid's Tale," which took home the Outstanding Drama Series prize last year. But "The Americans," which ended its six-season run this year to critical acclaim, could be the surprise underdog that wins big in its final year.

We'll update this post as the awards are announced throughout the night, so stick around and enjoy the Emmys on NBC.

Below are the big winners of the night's awards, which we'll update throughout the night:

The long-snubbed FX drama 'The Americans' won major Emmys last night, but there were 3 others it should have won

Matthew Rhys Emmy

  • "The Americans" won its first major Emmys Monday night, with a win for best lead actor in a drama and best writing for a drama series.
  • But it deserved more awards.
  • Here are the three awards "The Americans" should have win for its sixth and final season on the air.

At the Emmy awards Monday night, Welsh actor Matthew Rhys won the Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a drama for his work on "The Americans." Earlier in the night, Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg— the creators and showrunners of the Russian spy drama — won an Emmy for outstanding writing for the incredible series finale, "Start," which aired in April.

Since 2013, FX's "The Americans" has quietly been the best show on television in its six seasons on the air. But not a lot of people watched it, despite it's high praise from critics. The sixth and final season, which aired earlier this year, eloquently marked the end of television's Golden Age, so it would've been fitting if it swept the Emmys.

Both of the Emmys the show won last night were deserved, considering the show has been robbed in major and minor categories for years. Before last night, it had only one two Creative Arts Emmys: two outstanding guest actress in a drama wins for Margo Martindale, who played Russian spy handler Claudia.

But in addition to the Emmys it did win last night, there are still three major awards it should have won by a long shot.

Keri Russell, for Outstanding Lead Actress in a drama

Russell was nominated in her category, but lost to Claire Foy for her work on Netflix's "The Crown."

For five years, Russell did some of the best acting in television history on "The Americans" as the cold, dutiful, but sometimes conflicted KGB spy Elizabeth Jennings. She was nominated three times, and absolutely deserved to win every time.

Noah Emmerich, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama *not nominated*

Unfortunately, Emmerich was not nominated this year, despite his incredible work in all the seasons, especially the sixth. Emmerich was never nominated for an Emmy for this role.

Emmerich never got the credit he deserved for his subtle but often gut-wrenching performance as Stan Beeman, an FBI agent unaware of his best friend's true identity as a KGB spy. The final season built up to Stan's realization at a grueling but perfect pace, and Emmerich said so much, often without saying anything at all.

Outstanding Drama Series

"The Americans" lost this award to "Game of Thrones," which won for its notoriously messy seventh season.

Sadly, since "The Americans" had only been nominated one other time in this category and it was never very popular, that meant that it was not likely to win. But it still deserved the win. No other show has so seamlessly pulled off such an unexpected final season that felt right for the characters and the show's themes, as well as the overall story. Even though there weren't dragons flying between Russia and Washington, the sixth season of "The Americans" was better than anything "Game of Thrones" did in season seven.

  • Kanye West has announced the release of a new album, "Yandhi," in an apparent follow-up to his 2013 LP "Yeezus."
  • "Yandhi," West's sixth studio release of the year, is set for release on September 29.

Kanye West has announced the release of a new album, "Yandhi," in an apparent follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2013 album, "Yeezus."

West teased the album's artwork on Twitter Monday afternoon, before sharing a date and title for the album late Monday night.

The album's artwork, depicting a blank CD in a clear case sealed with purple tape, is a call-back to the cover of "Yeezus," which featured a blank CD in a clear case sealed with red tape. West referred to the "Yeezus" artwork as "an open casket to CDs" in 2016.

"Yandhi" is set for release on September 29, the same date as West's recently announced "Saturday Night Live" appearance as musical guest.

"Yandhi" will be West's sixth studio release of the year, following his production and release of a string of albums in May and June, including his eighth solo album, "Ye," the Kid Cudi collaboration "Kids See Ghosts," and one album each for artists Pusha-T, Nas, and Teyana Taylor.

It's unclear if West's subsequent standalone singles, "XTCY" and "I Love It" (featuring rapper Lil Pump), will be featured on the new album. "I Love It" debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart this week.

seven seconds

  • Regina King won the Emmy for lead actress in a limited series on Monday for Netflix's "Seven Seconds."
  • Netflix tweeted "REGINA KING DESERVES THE WORLD" in response to her win.
  • The tweet was quickly mocked, because Netflix canceled "Seven Seconds" earlier this year after one season.

Netflix is thrilled over Regina King's Emmy win for her performance on its show "Seven Seconds," but the streaming giant is being mocked for its enthusiasm.

King won her third Emmy on Monday for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series (she previously won in 2015 and 2016 for Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for "American Crime").

The Netflix description for "Seven Seconds" is, "The death of a 15-year-old African American boy in Jersey City sets off a police cover-up and a search for the truth." It was meant to be an anthology series about race and crime in America.

Netflix responded to King's win by tweeting: "REGINA KING DESERVES THE WORLD." The problem? It canceled "Seven Seconds" in April after only one season.

It didn't take long for people on Twitter to point that out.

Below are some responses to the tweet:

  • Amazon and Netflix dominated a lot of the major Emmy categories last night, with big wins for "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," "Godless," "The Crown," and "Seven Seconds."
  • HBO and Netflix tied with the most Emmy wins in 2018. Both won 23, including the Creative Arts Emmys.
  • We made a graphic to show how all the networks compared in Emmy wins.

The 70th annual Emmy Awards aired live from Los Angeles Monday, and it was a big night for the streaming giants.

Netflix won multiple acting categories for shows including "The Crown," "Godless," and (already canceled) "Seven Seconds." HBO won the same amount of total Emmys as Netflix, thanks to some major wins for "Game of Thrones" and "Barry."

While Amazon didn't win as many awards in comparison, "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" swept several categories, including best actress and best supporting actress in a comedy, best comedy, and a historic double win for Amy Sherman-Palladino, who won for writing and directing the series.

Representing the ad-supported networks, FX snagged two surprising and deserved wins for "The Americans" and multiple for "The Assassination of Gianni Versace," including best actor in a limited series and best limited series. It came pretty close to Netflix and HBO in the tally for Emmy wins during the telecast.

During the Primetime telecast, Netflix won 7 Emmys, HBO won 6, Amazon won 5, and FX won 5. But including the Creative Arts Emmys, which happen a week before the Primetime ceremony, HBO and Netflix tied with 23 Emmys, while Amazon won 8. FX won 12 in total.

This graphic shows how all of the networks Emmy wins compared to each other:

A director close to vanished Chinese actress Fan Bingbing has been mysteriously edited out of a movie

  • Fan Bingbing, one of China's most prominent actresses, vanished in early July.
  • She was accused of tax evasion alongside Feng Xiaogang, a director she had worked with.
  • Feng's cameo appearance in another film was mysteriously deleted, and his name edited out of the credits.

A Chinese director with close ties to the vanished actress, Fan Bingbing, had his appearances mysteriously edited out of an upcoming film.

Feng Xiaogang made a cameo appearance in the film, "Ash is Purest White," which showed at the Cannes and Toronto film festivals in May and last week respectively.

But the Toronto showing of the film was five minutes shorter than that in Cannes, which ran at 141 minutes. The Toronto screening ran at 136 minutes, the Chinese-language news site Duowei News reported on Tuesday.

Newly released posters, and credits at the end of the film, also removed all mention of Feng's name, Duowei said.

The premiere of the film, which was originally scheduled to take place on September 14 in Shanxi, China, was also temporarily cancelled, Chinese movie portal Mtime reported.

Business Insider contacted Toronto Film Festival and MK2 films, the movie's co-investor and international sales agent, for comment.

An MK2 spokesman told Variety on Monday: "This is a normal process which improves the flow of the narrative. It is always a rush to prepare a film for Cannes."

Jia Zhangke, the director of the film, avoided questions about Feng at another screening on Monday and described the situation as "complicated," according to Mtime.

But there may be a more sinister motive.

fan bingbing feng xiaogang

In late May, shortly after the Cannes Film Festival, Fan was accused of evading Chinese tax by signing a secret contract in her upcoming film, "Cell Phone 2," which was directed by Feng.

Cui Yongyuan, a former TV host with the state-owned China Central Television, suggested that the actress had signed two contracts: One of 10 million yuan ($1.5 million), which was used for her taxes, and another for 50 million ($7.3 million) yuan, which was kept secret.

These are referred to as "yin-yang contracts," likely named because one contract is public and the other is not. In Chinese, yin means dark and yang means light.

Fan's office has denied allegations that she signed yin-yang contracts, and accused Cui of insinuation and defamation.

Feng, who was accused of being complicit in Fan's alleged scheme, has also denied allegations of tax evasion.

Fan has not been seen in public for more than two months, and many of her fans speculate that she is being held by the Chinese government over the tax evasion allegations.

China's state-run Securities Daily reported earlier this month that she was "under control, and will accept the legal decision." That article has since been deleted, and other social media posts about her appear to be censored.

Fan is one of China's most prominent actress, and played Blink in the 2014 film "X-Men: Days of Future Past." She was also due to appear in a spy film, "355," alongside Jessica Chastain, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, and Lupita Nyong'o.

Netflix looks like it might soon replace HBO as the perennial Emmy Awards favorite, following the award show's 70th annual broadcast on Monday night.

Netflix and HBO tied for the most Emmy wins of any network on Monday with 23 wins each. During the main broadcast, Netflix edged out HBO in the wins count seven to six.

The streaming service also led all networks in nominations for the first time this year with 112 nods, surpassing HBO's 108 nominations.

In 2017, Netflix took home 20 Emmys from 91 nominations — second to HBO's 29 wins and 111 nominations.

Netflix's rapid ascent comes as HBO's executives are seeking to expand the quantity of the cable outlet's offerings to reach a "broad" audience and better compete with streaming rivals like Netflix, though not exactly at "Netflix-levels of investment." Netflix will famously have spent $8 billion on content this year, with much of its resources going to original content.

‘Harold and Kumar’ actor Kal Penn shares why he backed the startup behind Silicon Valley’s favorite ‘bleeding’ veggie burger, which is now at White Castle

  • Kal Penn, the actor who played Kumar in the 2004 cult comedy "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle," now has a reason to return to the burger chain in real life.
  • This week, the chain is adding Silicon Valley's favorite "bleeding" veggie burger from startup Impossible Foods to the menu at all of its nearly 400 restaurants.
  • Impossible Foods' veggie burger sizzles and tastes like a beef burger thanks to key ingredient heme, and is backed by Bill Gates and Richard Branson.

Kumar is going back to White Castle — this time for a Bill Gates-backed veggie burger that "bleeds."

Kal Penn, the actor who played Kumar in the 2004 cult comedy "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle," now has a reason to return to the burger chain in real life: the long-time vegetarian can chow down on veggie Impossible Burger sliders, which will be available at all of its nearly 400 restaurants nationwide starting Wednesday.

"This is something that’s like, 'Hey you can have the same meat burger — with all the flavor, texture, everything — it’s just not made from a cow, and by the way it’s way better for you and for the planet,'" Penn told Business Insider.

Backed by investors including Bill Gates and Richard Branson, the Impossible Burger sizzles and "bleeds" just like a traditional beef burger when cooked — only the patty is made from vegetarian ingredients like wheat protein and the essential nutrient heme.

After trying the Impossible Burger for the first time in New York and mistaking it for a beef burger, Penn called up a friend, Jake Crumbine, who'd taken on a role as the head of partnerships at Impossible Foods. When he found out how the company was making "legitimate meat from plants," using heme, he decided to invest a small amount in the company.

"I thought I should probably put my money where my mouth is," Penn said.

From homemade veggie patties to Impossible sliders

impossible foods plant based burger 6For the film, "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle," set workers had to make miniature vegetarian patties to swap out for the beef sliders in the final scene where Harold and Kumar order their meal.

"The person in charge of props went out of her way to make little mini veggie burgers for me," said Penn. "Who would have thought that 14 years later we could be using Impossible Sliders?"

Before rolling out the veggie sliders across all of its restaurants, White Castle tested them out in a six-month pilot at a selection of locations. To White Castle CEO Lisa Ingram's surprise, White Castle fans, or "cravers," loved it.

So the company decided to make the patties available at all of their restaurants for $1.99.

White Castle isn't the only chain that's had success in adding the Impossible Burger to its menu. Fatburger, a regional chain loved by stars like Nicki Minaj and Kanye West, has been "selling the Impossible Burger like crazy," since adding it to its lineup last year, Andy Weiderhorn, the CEO of parent company Fat Brands Inc., told Business Insider.

"We’ve had a whole crop of people who come to our restaurants looking for the Impossible Burger, either never knowing we had veggie burgers before or looking for it specifically," Weiderhorn said.

That's something that can't be said of most vegetarian fast-food options.

"You no longer have to make a choice between something that’s environmentally conscious and something that tastes really good," Penn said.

Stormy Daniels compares Trump's privates to 'the mushroom character in Mario Kart'

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Switch)

  • In an upcoming book from pornographic film actress Stephanie Clifford, aka Stormy Daniels, President Trump's genitals are likened to "the mushroom character in 'Mario Kart'."
  • The video game character, Toad, has a body shape similar to a mushroom — his head is a large, speckled mushroom cap.
  • Clifford allegedly had a sexual affair with Trump more than 10 years ago.

The latest twist in the ongoing he said/she said between President Trump and Stephanie Clifford — aka "Stormy Daniels," the pornographic film actress who allegedly had an affair with Trump years ago — involves a Super Mario side character.

Is nothing sacred? (The answer is no, nothing is sacred.)

In a new book titled, "Full Disclosure," Daniels compares Trump's genitals to "the mushroom character in 'Mario Kart'." The Guardian obtained an early copy of the book, and shared the pertinent section.

"I lay there, annoyed that I was getting f***ed by a guy with Yeti pubes and a d**k like the mushroom character in 'Mario Kart'," Daniels writes in the upcoming book, according to The Guardian.

The "mushroom character," as Mario fans know, is a cute little fellow named Toad.

Toad, and the Super Mario series that he sprang from, is intended to be family friendly. The biggest controversy surrounding Toad was whether or not his mushroom head is a hat (it's not — it's part of his body!).

If anything, Toad appears in recent "Super Mario" games as a comic foil.

Captain Toad

He shows up in "Super Mario Odyssey" as Captain Toad, an adventurous explorer seeking coins. He shows up in various "Mario & Luigi" games as a loyal subject of the Mushroom Kingdom.

And he shows up in "Mario Kart" as the joyful little guy he's always been.

Here he is doing a sweet jump:

Mario Kart 8 (Toad)

From now on, unfortunately, he's playing a new role — as a comparison to President Trump's genitals. Sorry Toad!

Nintendo didn't offer a statement regarding the comparison, and that's probably for the best.

The book, "Full Disclosure," arrives on October 2. For the full quote from the book, head over to The Guardian right here.

The biggest surprises and snubs from the Emmys 2018

glenn weiss emmys proposal

The Emmys saw its first-ever proposal this year, which energized what was otherwise a bit of a plodding telecast.

The 70th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Colin Jost and Michael Che, aired Monday night from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

It was a big Emmys night for streaming giants Netflix and Amazon, as well as HBO and long-snubbed "The Americans" from FX.

There were many surprises throughout the night, including the shocking proposal, major wins (including a historic one) for "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," and the controversial best drama win for the worst season of "Game of Thrones."

And there were also some awkward moments, such as when Jeff Daniels used his speech to thank a horse, and some major snubs for "Atlanta," which dominated the comedy category at 2017's ceremony, but won none this time around.

Here are all the biggest surprises and snubs from the 2018 Emmys:

SEE ALSO: The long-snubbed FX drama 'The Americans' won major Emmys last night, but there were 3 others it should have won

"Barry" unexpectedly won in both male comedy acting categories.

Bill Hader winning best actor was a big surprise, because most people didn't expect him to win for his dark but funny performance as a hitman turned wannabe actor on the HBO series.

Henry Winkler, who won best supporting actor in a comedy for "Barry," got his first Emmy. It had been 40 years since his first nomination.

Winkler, who received his first Emmy nomination in 1976 for "Happy Days," won his first Emmy for his role as an eccentric acting teacher on "Barry."

"I was 27 when I started doing The Fonz. I'm now 72 and I'm standing right here in front of you with her," Winkler said directly to his Emmy statue. "Wow."

Amazon's "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" swept the comedy categories.

Amazon's critical comedy hit unexpectedly won its first Emmy with Alex Borstein for best supporting actress. And it continued to dominate the comedy category with a historic win for creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, who was the first woman to win Emmys for both directing and writing.

"The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" went on to win for best lead actress in a comedy, which went to Rachel Brosnahan. And it became the first comedy from a streaming service to win the best comedy category.

Unfortunately, some of the wins for "Mrs. Maisel" and "Barry" meant some major losses for FX's "Atlanta."
