There were five Super Bowl ads that stood head and shoulders above the rest this year.

There were some very good ads — notably the new M&M's spot from BBDO New York and Amy Poehler's Best Buy ad. We also liked Psy's "Gangnam Style" turn for Wonderful Pistachios. (You can see all the ads here.)

But the five ads that will have everyone talking in the office tomorrow were Dodge Ram's "God made a farmer"; Procter & Gamble's Tide ad, "Miracle Stain"; Doritos' "Goat4Sale"; Samsung's use of Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd; and the Budweiser Clydesdales' commercial titled "Brotherhood." Here they are.

Ram trucks, "Farmer," by The Richards Group:

Procter & Gamble, Tide, by Saatchi & Saatchi:

Doritos' "Goat4Sale," by Ben Callner:

Samsung's "The Next Big Thing":

Ex-Employee Sues Oprah's Own Network For Sexual Discrimination

Oprah's OWN network may be faring better in ratings; however, it's finding itself amid a sex discrimination lawsuit.

Ex-employee Caroline Hommel filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court Friday claiming she was laid off from the OWN network months after taking medical leave due to a pregnancy.

According to Hommel's complaint, a temporary employee, Whitney Holland, was brought in to fill in for Hommel during a two-week medical leave in August 2011.

Upon returning from medical leave in September, Hommel asserts Holland continued taking on more of her previous responsibilities at the office including leading weekly scheduling and research meetings.

In addition, Hommel claims that in the following months, she continued to be "excluded from meetings, emails, and information on the status of projects." Information that Hommel says was available to her before announcing her pregnancy.

According to the complaint, Hommel was laid off while on another medical leave in March 2012 that was reportedly due to a re-structuring eliminating her Senior Director position.

Hommel claims she was told to apply for a newly added Vice President of Scheduling position. After allegedly not receiving an interview, Hommel later learned Holland was hired in the position.

In the complaint, Hommel says she was told at a March 2011 performance review she was on track to become a Vice President at OWN.

Hommel also claims she filed several discrimination complaints before being laid off, but nothing came of them.

Hommel is seeking a trial by jury, alleging sex discrimination, disability discrimination, and failure to pay for more than 40 hours vacation time accrued during her time of employment.

The Hollywood Reporter has the full complaint HERE.

'Texas Chainsaw' Producer Says 3D Glasses Need To Evolve Or Disappear

Texas Chainsaw 3D

Earlier this month, we told you that 3D movies aren't going anywhere just yet

Our reasoning then, and remains now, based on our conversation with one of the minds behind one of the most recent films to be made in 3D—the revival of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre."

We spoke with the film's producer Carl Mazzocone extensively on the debate over the future of 3D.

Business Insider: When does 3D work and when doesn't it?

Carl: A lot of producers have exploited 3D unnecessarily to capture that extra little [sur]charge at the box office. Certain movies clearly should not be 3D. There's no true benefit of, I think, having a conventional love story in 3D. But, in a horror movie where there's action and you're trying to make it as frightening as possible, and of course you're wielding a three foot chainsaw, you have a situation where you can actually enhance the situation by making a 3D movie.

Technically, when you have an animated movie that’s one of the best 3D [films] you can get because of the control they have in absolutely every aspect. The whole movie is made on the computer.

3D is not going to turn a bad movie into a good movie, when it comes to story you need a great script and you need somebody who understands the script and is making a great script, so ultimately you can’t say 3D’s going to make your movie great, its only an enhancement.

BI: Why was "Texas Chainsaw" filmed in 3D?

texas chainsaw 3d

Carl: I wanted to make the movie thrilling. I thought if used correctly, it would enhance the movie. There’s parts of the movie that have enormous realism. Theres a scene where Leatherface [villain] is chasing Heather, a character played by Alexandra Daddario, and that's a really fabulous scenario for 3D because because you have all these objects in the foreground mid ground and in the distance, well lit and as you’re chasing somebody there’s a real realistic feeling of actually being in the crowd, of being in the point of view of leatherface with the crowd coming by you and its some of the coolest 3D in the movie.

BI: When is it appropriate to use 3D versus 2D?

Carl: From a business point of view 3D is expensive. It does cost more to make a 3D movie [than] a 2D movie and when you crunch the numbers it’s a lot better 3D if you shoot native 3D [than] if you converted. The reason for that is you know you're making a 3D movie and you know that you're going to put these 3D glasses on that are like wearing sunglasses so you can light appropriately for 3D. You can set and stage your action appropriate for 3D and then really most importantly is as you’re recording in 3d you're sitting in video village watching a very expensive high def 3D monitor wearing 3D glasses and at that point in time you actually get to see that 3D that you recorded and that’s profoundly efficient and valuable.

BI: And what are your thoughts on 2D to 3D conversion?

"As the audience get wiser and it gets used to certain things, they won't lean toward 3D unless it serves its purpose."

Carl: Of course it wasn’t shot to be in 3D so you're limited by the decision making of the filmmaker at the time not realizing it was someday going to be a 3D movie. And, then there's the enormous expense. 3D conversion cost $50,000 a minute. So, that’s very cost prohibitive when you're making a lower budget movie to do that. I’ve learned a lot about 3D. I’ve made one and I did my best to shoot native 3D on absolutely everything, but because of the size of the camera, there are times that you just have to shoot 2D and convert to 3D. And, of course, you want to keep it down to a minimum because of the expense.

You know, obviously if you're converting an older movie like “Jurassic Park” you have no choice, you have to convert that one. But yeah, I definitely believe that native 3D has a better quality. There are times where I think that if an average movie could do 90 percent native and 10 percent conversion then that’s just the nature of the beast.

BI: Where do you see the future of 3D in film going?

Carl: I don’t think it's over, but I do think its future is going to be decided by the technological advances that are going to be made in the future. One of the problems is wearing the glasses. At some point in time when they can either eliminate the glasses or improve the glasses, it will improve the experience. It's all about the experience. So, I’m hopeful that 3D will evolve technologically and will enhance the cinematic experience.

Boomer Esiason Said Beyoncé Caused Two Power Outages During Her Rehearsals

beyonce guitarist super bowl

The exact cause of the Super Bowl blackout is not known yet, but there are tons of theories out there.

Boomer Esiason said on his radio show this morning that he was told that Beyoncé caused two power outages at the Superdome during her rehearsals. Esiason describes what happened:

"The interesting thing is, about five or six minutes prior to I guess the breaker going, where our radio booth was up on the seventh floor, we were almost at the ceiling of the dome, and Kevin says to me, ‘Man, do you hear that buzzing?’ And I took my headset off and there was this like electrical buzz sound coming from the ceiling. This was after halftime, it was after Beyonce."

Here's the kicker:

"And by the way, Beyoncé blew the electric in the Superdome twice, I’m told, during her rehearsals during the week."

The NFL, however, is denying that Beyoncé's performance was the cause of the outage. Roger Goodell told CBS,“That is not the case on anything we have at this point.” And a Superdome power company official told CBS that Beyoncé's performance was actually powered by generated power, “which means it was not our [Superdome's power company] grid at all. In fact, during the halftime show, we had a drop in power.”

Michael Bay Called The Doritos 'Crash The Super Bowl' Finalists And No One Believed It Was Him

Michael Bay

If Michael Bay called your cell phone, would you believe it was him or hang up the phone?

By now, everyone who watches Super Bowl ads knows about Doritos' crazy-successful "Crash the Super Bowl" contest, which gives consumers the chance to make a commercial that will be seen in front of 111 million plus people.

What people don't know about is how the five "Crash the Super Bowl" finalists, selected from hundreds of submissions, were informed that they would be competing to play in the big game.

Doritos CMO Ann Mukherjee told BI how the company teamed up with Michael Bay for this year's contest — if a winner ad got the number one spot on USA Today's Ad Meter, the creator would get $1 million and the chance to work on the next "Transformers" flick — and how involved the famous director got in the process.

"He came to us and said, 'Hey guys, you know when you pick the five finalists, I want to call them and tell them," Mukherjee said.

Not one to say no to Bay, Doritos gave him the finalists numbers and told him to make the calls.

The only problem?

"He called them, and the finalists were like, 'No you're not MichaelBay,' and they hung up on him," Mukherjee said. "Because why would MichaelBay call them? It was so hard to believe, but [Bay] got a kick out of it."

Doritos recorded the calls in a video you can see below.

"You can imagine, if you've never been in the limelight in your life, and you have one of the most successful movie directors calling you saying, 'You're gonna get a shot of a lifetime,'" Mukherjee said. "It puts your hairs on end, it was amazing."

Although Doritos' "Fashionista Daddy" and "Goat 4 Sale" ads didn't win USA Today's Ad Meter, at least they can hold on to their brush with Bay, who actually sat with the finalists in the "Doritos Suite" during the game.

And the "Fashionista Daddy" team will get a chance to work with Bay on the next "Transformers."

Watch a video of some select calls that Doritos put together. Frito-Lays told BI that calls in which contestants hung up on Bay were edited out to save them from the embarrassment.

Justin Timberlake Super Bowl 2013

Despite reports claiming DirecTV paid Justin Timberlake a whopping $3 million to perform an hour-long set at their Super Bowl party in New Orleans this weekend, a rep for DirecTV tells Business Insider "The figure reported by Page Six is wrong ... It is true that the performance benefitted Shriner’s Hospitals, but that is it."

Apparently the amount Timberlake was paid is far less than $3 million, but he did donate the entire amount to Shriners Hospital for Children.

Timberlake's performance in question was his first official concert in five years and included a ten-piece back up band, as well as surprise on-stage appearances by Jay-Z and Timbaland.

Timberlake ended the evening with his hit “SexyBack"  and by donating his entire paycheck to Shriners Hospital for Children, confirms a DirecTV rep.

A Boston Market employee got fired on national television after going on a rant about how much he hates customers to a co-worker who was actually an undercover exec.

Boston Market chief brand officer Sara Bittorf was on CBS reality show Undercover Bosswhich puts incognito company execs into regular stores to see what things are really like on the ground.

The employee, identified only as Ronnie, is the first worker to ever be fired on the show.

"I literally hate customers more than anything in the entire world. I hate them so much," he said in his rant. "They're terrible. It's all about them all the time and they demand everything."

"I can't have someone who just told me that they hate customers more than anything in the world serving our guests," said Bittorf on the show. "That's the complete antithesis of what we stand for.'"

Then, she broke her cover, told Ronnie who she really was, and lectured him. She advised the branch manager that the worker should be fired and that was the end for Ronnie.

He didn't seem to think he did anything wrong though.

''I would tell them my attitude would change but I didn't think it was that terrible," said Ronnie. "It's not wrong of me to hate people."

We spoke with Bittorf right before the show aired and she said that the employee in question "wasn't living up to our values" and she was forced to "take care of it."

The Oscar Telecast Plans To Cut Out All The Boring Parts

$
0
0

craig zadan neil meron oscar 2013 producersBEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — The producers of the Academy Awards have good news for those watching at home: They're trying to cut out the boring parts.

Oscar producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron say they watched 40 years of past ceremonies to finds ways to keep the show moving at a brisk pace. They say they are looking to nip and tuck unnecessary moments that can turn the show into a marathon.

At an annual lunch honoring Oscar nominees, Zadan and Meron said they identified time-consuming segments that might run only 15 or 30 seconds but which collectively can bog down the show. In some years, the Oscars have run to a ponderous four hours or more.

"You start adding up those 30 seconds, and you have an accumulation of time that you can use for entertainment. So that's what we're doing. We're learning a lot about the things that we don't need in the show," Zadan said. "The main goal is to honor the nominees and the winners. And then beside that, there's a lot of pregnant pauses that you get in the show. ... We've scooped out a lot of those pauses and created more time for performance and entertainment."

Zadan and Meron said they have moments planned that should appeal to all ages and interests, including performances by Adele, Norah Jones and Barbra Streisand and a tribute to the James Bond franchise.

They also are working closely with Oscar host Seth MacFarlane, creator of "Family Guy" and last summer's comedy hit "Ted" who is known for edgy, potty-mouthed humor. The producers said they're not worried that they will need an emergency switch to censor MacFarlane.

"There's no oversized red button" to bleep the broadcast if MacFarlane goes too far, Meron said. "Seth is Seth, and we love him."

Among those attending the Oscar lunch were acting nominees Denzel Washington, Sally Field, Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts, Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro.

Also on hand was Ben Affleck, who missed out on acting and directing nominations for his CIA thriller "Argo" but does share a best-picture nomination as a producer on the film.

Affleck said he's thrilled with the awards attention the film has gotten and that he is not sweating his snub as director.

Since he got left out of the directing field on Oscar nominations morning, "Argo" has gone one to dominate other Hollywood awards, including the top prize for Affleck at Saturday's Directors Guild of America honors. "Argo" now has established itself as the Oscar favorite among the nine best-picture contenders, a rarity since films hardly ever win the main award if they are not nominated for best director.

"I just feel so incredibly honored to be nominated as a producer for this movie. To be here at the big party," said Affleck, who shared a screenplay Oscar with Matt Damon for 1997's "Good Will Hunting" but had not been nominated again until this season.

"There are nine amazing movies, any of which could win, any of which would deserve to win if they did. I don't get into worrying too much about who got what and who didn't get what. I mean, I've had many, many, many, many, many, many years watching from home."

About 160 nominees attended the lunch, an annual rite leading up to Hollywood's big night. The 85th annual Oscars air live Feb. 24 on ABC.

At the lunch, stars discussed other rites of awards season, such as what to wear Oscar night and how to deal with the stress of it all.

Chastain, a best-actress nominee for the Osama bin Laden manhunt thriller "Zero Dark Thirty," said she expects to have a nice breakfast, with calming music and candles, on Oscar morning.

Best-actress rival Lawrence, nominated for the lost-souls romance "Silver Linings Playbook," said her family is pretty matter-of-fact about her Oscar success, using it a reason to party.

"The night of the Oscars, everybody just gets wasted and has a blast," said Lawrence, who dressed for comfort two years ago when nominated for "Winter's Bone" but is thinking style this time around. "This year, I'm like, 'No, suck it up. Wear a corset.' So yeah, I'm going to go for fashion this time."

Lawrence's "Silver Linings Playbook" co-star Cooper, a best-actor nominee, expects to be doing the reverse of his character, who's recovering from a stay in a mental hospital with help from his parents. Cooper said he figures he'll be minding one of his own parents before the Oscars.

"I'm sure the day of, I'll be calming my mother down," Cooper said. "She still doesn't know what to wear, so I'll be a caretaker that day."

Hathaway, a supporting-actress nominee for the musical "Les Miserables," said she hasn't given any thought yet to what she'll wear on Oscar night.

"Yeah, I need to get on that, don't I?" Hathaway said. "It was the Super Bowl. I couldn't think about dresses with all that delicious fried food around."

If the Oscar producers really want to keep the show moving, they might seek advice from De Niro, a supporting-actor nominee for "Silver Linings Playbook."

Meeting with reporters, seven-time nominee, two-time winner De Niro was asked how big a deal the Oscars are to him now. The notoriously terse De Niro lived up to his reputation with a five-word answer.

"It's still a big deal," he said, and moved on to the next question.

It's official! Production on "The Amazing Spider-Man" sequel has begun.

Director Marc Webb tweeted the following in celebration of the first big day:

People are most surprised that from the looks of the photo, the film appears to be shot in 35mm instead of digital.

This comes as a surprise considering the first film was shot in digital. Since the film is planned for a 3D release, that means that when all is said and done the film will have to be converted to 3D.

In addition to Andrew Garfield reprising his role as Peter Parker, Jamie Foxx and Paul Giammatti are joining the cast as villains Electro and the Rhino.

"The Descendants" actress Shailene Woodley is joining the cast as Mary Jane Watson while Felicity Jones is starring in a still unspecified role.

"The Amazing Spider-Man" sequel is set to film in New York City later this month.

Donald Trump has sued Bill Maher over a joke Maher made last month on NBC's "Tonight Show."

Trump filed a lawsuit Monday in California against Maher after Maher said he would give Trump $5 million if Trump could prove he isn't the "spawn of his mother having sex with an orangutan," POLITICO reported.

But Maher never coughed up the money, prompting Trump to wage a Twitter war Monday against the liberal comedian.donald trump bill maher tweet

Predictably, Trump's lawsuit seems a bit ridiculous. Maher made the claim on "The Tonight Show" and certainly seemed to be joking.

During the same interview, Maher also said Trump's hair and an Orangutan are "the only two things in nature of the same color" and expressed his sympathy  for the "syphilitic monkey who does his Twitter feed."

Plus, he suggested that Trump give the money to "the Institute for incorrigible douchbaggery."

How Well Do You Know Your Super Bowl Ads?

kate upton mercedes benz

This Sunday, advertisers tried to pull out all the stops for their $4 million 30-second Super Bowl commercial slots. That often meant shelling out even more money to secure a huge celebrity to star in the ad.

But was it worth it?

An ad isn't just about creating a good show, but making sure consumers remember what the commercial was actually for.

It has only been a few days, but can you remember which company's ads these huge celebrities starred in? You might remember Amy Poehler's spot, but what did fellow SNL alum Tracy Morgan plug in the big game? It's all about brand recognition.

Can you remember the Super Bowl ad Amy Poehler was in?

Robert De Niro Katie Couric David O. Russell Bradley Cooper SIlver Linings Playbook

"Silver Linings Playbook" actors Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper joined director David O. Russell on Katie Couric's daytime talk show "Katie" on Monday to discuss their Oscar-nominated film.

Bradley Cooper's "Playbook" character, Pat Solitano, is a bipolar man who has recently been released from a mental institution and is returning home to live with his parents — played by Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver.

Director David O. Russell says he wanted to make the film because the content is close to his heart.

"I've had a son who has a mood disorder, which means someone that can have moods that can pull them down the drain and send the home to a tornado in moments," Russell says in the "Katie" interview.

O. Russell's real-life son Matthew plays the nosy next door neighbor whom De Niro chases out of the yard in the film.

When Couric asked De Niro if he felt a greater responsibility about doing a film in which the director had so much personally invested, De Niro begins to tear up and says, "I don’t like to get emotional, but I know exactly what he [David] goes through."

The director recalled to Couric, "I thought he [De Niro] was having hay fever, then I realized he was having an emotional reaction and I sat there and watched Robert De Niro cry for 10 minutes and I said, 'Wow he's really connecting with this material and this would be beautiful thing if it could work out, because I think his heart would be there' and it is there."

'Will & Grace' Creator Explains How He Created A Successful Gay TV Show Using Ellen's Mistakes

will & grace pilot

NBC's hit sitcom "Will & Grace" pushed the boundaries and made gay relationships part of mainstream pop culture.

But show creators were walking on eggshells the entire time.

Show co-creator Max Mutchnick joined New York City mayoral hopeful Christine Quinn, New York Times columnist Frank Bruni, and Fordham Law School professor Thane Rosenbaum Monday night to discuss cultural and legal issues facing the gay-rights movement.

When the "Will & Grace" pilot aired in 1998, gay rights were virtually non-existent.

President Bill Clinton had signed the Defense of Marriage Act just two years earlier, which defined marriage as only between one man and one woman.

And when Martin Luther King's widow, Coretta Scott King, called for activists to fight against homophobia, members of the black civil rights movement criticized her for comparing the gay civil rights movement to theirs, PBS reported at the time.

Plus Ellen DeGeneres' character on "Ellen," and DeGeneres herself, had just come out of the closet a year earlier amid an avalanche of public backlash, according to Take Part.

So Mutchnick and his colleagues had to tread carefully and learn from past examples.

He said Ellen tried to teach the public about the gay lifestyle, which was just too much for people to take in the late '90s.

"We leave all that gay teaching to Ellen," Mutchnick revealed Monday night, adding that he and his team "learned from that mistake."

Rule No. 1 for "Will & Grace" was just to be funny.

And while "they did not love us in the South," Mutchnick said his humorous approach ultimately did teach the viewing public a thing or two about the lives and relationships of gay people in America.

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence may be a two-time Oscar nominee with a good shot at this year's Best Actress statue for her role in "Silver Linings Playbook," but deep down the Kentucky native is just a 22-year-old tomboy.

While her fellow Oscar nominees such as Jessica Chastain or Naomi Watts rarely say a word out of turn, Lawrence has been brutally honest when speaking with press.
