Donald Glover Will Play Lena Dunham's Republican Boyfriend In Season 2 Of 'Girls'

$

donald glover

So this is how "Girls" is going to deal with race. And politics. But mostly race.

Tim Goodman's review of the show in The Hollywood Reporter this morning explains that "Community" star Donald Glover plays "a handsome black Republican named Sandy" dating Lena Dunham's protagonist.

Last year's news that Glover, who also raps under the name Childish Gambino, would appear on the second season of the HBO show, which debuts January 13, appeared to indicate that Dunham—in addition to casting a popular, young actor with a fan base that complements her own—was responding to criticism over the first season's treatment of race.

From Goodman's review it seems that Dunham, for whatever reason, is going straight for some of the topics she was taken to task over during the first season's run. Goodman explains in his review that the second season "does a fantastic job of skewering hipsters and frauds – many of the things that detractors hated about the show." Dunham's character appears very much aware of race issues this time around:

When Sandy calls out Hannah’s knowledge of race and its ramifications, she goes on a self-righteous, defensive rant, and Sandy says, "You just said a Missy Elliot lyric." There are attacks on fixie bikes, rich white girls dating black men, gay iPad-using DJs, what constitutes a "pretty person’s job," and the smug cynicism of youthful people who haven’t earned the right to it.

We're also interested to see how Sandy's Republicanism fits in, since — for a show that has generated a lot of political discussion — the characters "Girls" world have remained fairly apolitical.

Social Media Is Now Allowing Us To Impact Television Shows In Real Time

Hawaii Five-0

If you've been frustrated with season 2 of "Homeland," or have ever been upset with any television seriesoutcomeever, you may have thought you could do a better job writing the episode.

At the least, you wished you could weigh in on shaping the end of the show you invested so much of your personal time toward.

Well, now you can – sort of.

For the first time ever, CBS will allow viewers to choose between three different possible endings to a live broadcast of one of its most popular shows.

The network announced "Hawaii FIVE-0" fans will be able to choose the culprit in an upcoming episode.

Monday January 14, audiences will be able to vote on CBS.com or by tweeting one of three hashtags (#theBoss, #theTA, or #theStudent) to choose the final outcome of the show.

Votes will be accumulated in real time and the most popular ending will be broadcast live at the end of the episode.

CBS will hold two separate votes for viewers on both the East and West coasts so it's very possible for two different versions of the episode to air.

After the broadcasts, all three endings will be available to view on CBS.com.

The event in its entirety brings to mind nostalgic choose-your-own-ending books

The idea in itself isn't new.

With audiences choosing the outcome in reality competition shows – American Idol," "Dancing with the Stars" – one would imagine we would have seen this sooner.

If you think back more than 20 years, we have.

CNN asked viewers to choose the news they wanted to hear in a segment of its "Newsnight" show in 1990 by dialing a 900 number

Before that, in 1988, Fox asked audiences to call in and vote on the identity of Jack the Ripper in a 100th-anniversary special.

If this ends up being a success, it's likely we could see even more Twitter integration in the future.

Maybe it didn't catch on as much in the late '80s or early '90s; however, two decades later, it certainly has the potential.

With more people heading online to stream shows or record them to watch at a later date, and the amount of people glued to social media sites Facebook and Twitter, social media integration gives audiences a reason to watch in real time.

Many shows have been adding second screen apps to enhance the viewing experience ("Breaking Bad," "The Walking Dead"), so it was only a matter of time until one of the big networks tapped into Twitter's potential.

The special episode of "Hawaii FIVE-0" will air January 14 at 10 p.m.

Patrick Dempsey Grey's Anatomy

"Grey's Anatomy" star Patrick Dempsey is no longer just Dr.McDreamy on the hit ABC show, he's also the proud owner of Seattle-based coffee chain, Tully's.

Last Thursday, Dempsey announced he was trying to buy the coffee chain out of bankruptcy after the company filed for Chapter 11 in October.

The purchase would allow the actor, whose TV show has been based in Seattle since 2005, to save over 500 local jobs.

And now, just a week later, the actor's reported $9,150,000 bid to buy the fledgling chain was accepted — with his Global Baristas LLC beating out competitors including Starbucks Corp. after six companies presented bids on Thursday.

Dempsey tweeted the good news:

 Patrick Dempsey Tweet

“I’m thrilled that we won and I’m even more excited about saving Tully’s Coffee and its hundreds of jobs,” Dempsey continued in a statement. “Tully’s is a great company with committed employees and with its base in Seattle, one of the world’s greatest cities, I’m confident we will be able to successfully build the brand and help grow the economy.”

Dempsey added, “Seattle has been very good to me over my career, and I am honored to have the privilege to own Tully’s and work closely with the company’s employees.”

Dempsey was initially motivated to help the coffee chain in order to save hundreds of employees' jobs at the company’s 47 coffee houses in Washington and California, along with dozens of licensed locations across the United States.

After Thursday's outcome, Dempsey tweeted Friday:

Before Thursday's decision, Dempsey tweeted, "In Seattle , big day tomorrow! Hope we pull it off!" and posted this photo with a Tully's employee.

The winning bid won't be official until a bankruptcy hearing next week. Dempsey said he expects the acquisition to be finalized later this month.

Supermodel Bar Refaeli Is Now A Go Daddy Girl

Kate Upton isn't the only Sports Illustrated swimsuit model starring in a Super Bowl spot.

Go Daddy, known for its overtly sexual Super Bowl spots, picked Israeli supermodel Bar Refaeli to star in its 30-second spot.

"The opportunity to be in a Super Bowl commercial is thrilling ... and to partner with Go Daddy is something I just couldn't resist," she said in a statement. "I feel like the 'Perfect Match' commercial is a chance to be in an iconic Super Bowl spot that not only leaves people talking, but shows everyone what Go Daddy is really about."

Refaeli, who was ranked No. 1 on Maxim's Hot 100 for 2012, will star alongside original Go Daddy girl Danica Patrick.

Patrick was actually the source of much media fodder since Go Daddy very publicly waffled over whether or not she would continue serving as a spokesperson in the big game.

While Mercedes definitively decided that Kate Upton will be covering up for its spot, it's unclear how much skin Refaeli will be baring in the spot.

After all, Go Daddy made a huge deal about classing up its act and substituting its scandalous platform to more technologically-oriented campaigns this summer. It is also using an agency, Deutsch NY, to make its spots for the first time, rather than doing it in-house.

We'll keep you updated when we get more information.

It's a battle at the box office for the competing Steve Jobs films.

One, based on the Walter Isaacson biography, is currently being penned by "Newsroom" creator Aaron Sorkin, while the other, smaller budget film "jOBS," starring Ashton Kutcher, will soon make its worldwide debut January 27 during the final night of the Sundance Film Festival.

Just yesterday it was announced that Open Road Films had acquired the Kutcher flick after a bidding war and will be responsible for the film's marketing and distribution.

The feature-length "jOBS," which has been shooting the past few months in California, will open in theaters nationwide in April.

Written by Matthew Whitely and directed by Joshua Michael Stern, "jOBS" focuses on the Apple co-founder's life from 1971 through 2000.

"jOBS is certain to resonate with audiences, and we are thrilled to partner with Five Star Feature Films to bring this film to theaters," said Open Road CEO Tom Ortenberg.

The film also stars Dermot Mulroney, Josh Gad, Lukas Haas, J.K. Simmons and Matthew Modine.

Victoria's Secret Just Confirmed Its New Favorite Angel

Victoria's Secret has made the careers of many supermodels, including Gisele Bundchen, Tyra Banks and Heidi Klum

Now the lingerie retailer has confirmed its new favorite angel — Candice Swanepoel.

Victoria's Secret put the 25-year-old model on the cover of its swimsuit catalogue.

The brand also gave Swanepoel preferential treatment during its famous fashion show last month. Swanepoel was the only model to get a feature segment during the television special. The segment introduced the audience to Swanepoel and went through her biography.

It's likely that Victoria's Secret is grooming Swanepoel because the rest of its A-team are all 30 or older.

While that's young by most standards, it's retiring age for a supermodel, and Miranda Kerr, Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio all have limited time on the catwalk.

Check Out This 'Scandalous' Never-Before-Seen Photo Of Princess Diana

Princess Diana

Apparently lounging on a male friend next to a bottle of Johnnie Walker pre-1980 is today equivalent to a nude photo scandal.

While Prince Harry was blasted by the media in August after naked photos of him partying in a Las Vegas hotel suite hit the web, turns out his late mother had been hiding a photo scandal of her own all these years.

That is, if you consider tame PDA a scandal.

A never-before-seen black and white photo showing "a young Diana lying in bed, with a young man seated behind her, and a bottle of Johnnie Walker sitting on the window sill" has just hit the public auction block.

The photo, which is marked with the words "Not to be published" handwritten on the front, was purchased by Britain's Daily Mirror on February 26, 1981 – just two days after the then-Diana Spencer was engaged to Prince Charles.

The photo, featuring an 18 or 19-year-old Diana with an unidentified man on a Swiss ski holiday, was kept hidden in the paper's archives until it was purchased seven years ago by the private Caren Archive.

"This would certainly not be in the way the Royal Family would have Diana to have been presented," said Eric Caren, owner of the Caren Archive, to the Daily Mail.

It is now set for auction by RR Auctions in New Hampshire, and is being described as an 8x10 "salacious teenage image of the future princess."

You can start your bidding at $200.

kelsey grammer new house beverly hills $6.5 million

Last year, former Frasier star Kelsey Grammer and his wife Kayte purchased a $6.5 million home in Beverly Hills.

The move sparked controversy at the time due to the mansion's proximity to the home of Grammer's ex-wife, Camille.

Now the Grammers are listing listing the Spanish-style estate for $7.25, according to a TMZ report— just nine months after they moved into it and one month after Grammer's latest TV show, Boss, was canceled.

The home has five bedrooms, six full bathrooms, and spans a total of 6,093 square feet. It was built in 1926 and designed by architect Ralph C. Flewelling.

If you don't want to shell out $7.25 million for the home, it's also available to rent for $30,000 a month. The home is currently listed on Christophe Choo Real Estate Group's website.

The Grammers purchased this Spanish Colonial Revival back in April 2012.

These Stunning New 'Star Trek' Stills Have Us Convinced Khan Is The Villain

$

benedict cumberbatch star trek into darkness

From the first time we saw the initial "Star Trek Into Darkness" teaser, we were convinced Khan was the antagonist.

We were so excited, we nearly referred to Benedict Cumberbatch's character as such before realizing there was no confirmation as to the villain's actual identity.

So, when initial reports "revealing" his character as John Harrison (who?) came out, we cried bluff along with all the other Trekkie diehards

We know Cumberbatch have all but sworn on the bible that his character is no more than some unknown character to the "Star Trek" universe.

However, all evidence has been telling us otherwise.

1. Filmmakers have led us astray beforehand when attempting to hide big villain reveals ("The Dark Knight Rises"). And, director J.J. Abrams is notorious for keeping a tight lid on all of his projects from "Lost" to "Cloverfield" and "Super 8."

2. The IMDB listing

IMDBpro (and now, IMDB) lists him rumored as Khan. The site hasn't steered us wrong yet. It's initially why we believed – and held onto the belief – that Marion Cotillard's Miranda Tate in "The Dark Knight Rises" was nothing more than a cover-up for her reveal as Talia Al Ghul.

3. Costar Zachary Quinto may have slipped up when he mistakenly mentioned Khan's name in a recent interview.

4. The latest evidence that has us convinced? Alice Eve's character of Dr. Carol Marcus first appearance in the "Star Trek" universe was in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of ... Khan"!

Yesterday, Paramount released high-resolution images for the film including a lot of photos of Cumberbatch's mystery villain.

(If they look slightly familiar, it's because they are also running in Empire.)

The images don't do much for plot reveal.

However, if you pair them with the plot synopsis revealed in November, the story starts to clear up and helps make the argument for a parallel to "Wrath of Khan" much more appealing.

At the end of the day, we just can't see any possible way that Cumberbatch is anyone else – and if he is, bravo Abrams. You got us.

James Kirk (Chris Pine) and Dr. Carol Marcus (Alice Eve) look like they've just received some troubling news.

It was revealed last month, Eve will be playing the role of Dr. Carol Marcus. If you're a Trekkie, you know that means that her character is the (spoiler) eventual mother to Kirk's son David.

Bonus points if you know that her character's first appearance in the "Star Trek" universe was in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of ... Khan"!

And, it looks like Scotty (Simon Pegg) has received the bad news as well.

What could that be? The first line from the plot synopsis: "When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization."

The above photo shows Kirk with Pike (Bruce Greenwood) – who looks like he may be out of his wheelchair from the first film.

Filmmaker Stanley Kubrick Thought IBM Would Get Mad About His Psycho Computer, HAL (IBM)

stanley kubrick

In the classic 1968 movie, "2001: A Space Odyssey" a computer named HAL is slowly revealed to be quite the psychopath.

That makes for some good dramatic scenes in the movie, but it also caused director Stanley Kubrick some nail biting of his own. He was worried that IBM would take offense that HAL went nuts and caused people to die, letters between Kubrick and one of his assistants show.

The letters are on display at a new Kubrick exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and are part of the a free iOS app the museum released as part of the exhibit, as spotted by the DVICE blog.

You see, back in the day, IBM scientists advised Kubrick on the nature of computers and artificial intelligence for the film.

Remember, back in 1968, the average person had had no experience with computers at all. IBM was concerned that people would think HAL was a real IBM computer.

Kubrick took that concern to heart.

"Does I. B. M. know that one of the main themes of the story is a psychotic computer? I don't want to get anyone in trouble, and I don't want them to feel they have been swindled. Please give me the exact status of things with I. B. M," he wrote.

In the end, Kubrick promised to make sure that IBM would "not be associated with the equipment failure by name" and IBM agreed to be named as an advisor in the film credits.

Here's a photo of one of the letters included in the free "Stanley Kubrick" exhibit iPhone app produced by

HBO Crashes A Salon Chain's Website After Offering Free Blowouts For 'Girls' Fans

Lena Dunham Girls Season 2 HBO

To promote the January 13 return of hit show "Girls," HBO tried to appeal to, well, girls, by offering free blowouts (including the tip!) to fans January 11th, 12th and 13th at every Drybar blowout salon location in the U.S. between 6 and 7pm.

Drybar currently has 25 locations in six states and normally charges $40 to blow women's hair straight, smooth, curly, big or beachy.

"At roughly 12 chairs per location, that’s 300 appointments for an estimated tab of $12,000 for the HBO promotions," as noted by Forbes.

But apparently the promotion was too much for the blow bar to bear, as the inundation of people trying to book appointments crashed the site and angered regular customers.

Drybar founder Ali Webb emailed out an apology Thursday to potential customers:

Ladies,

I know a lot of people have been unable to book appointments both online and via the phones.

Unfortunately, despite staffing up our phone receptionists for this promotion, we dramatically underestimated the response here and are terribly sorry for any inconvenience. I have read all the frustrated emails and truly feel awful.

Please know we are doing everything we can to rectify the situation as quickly as possible. And will do a better job of planning next time, I promise.

Sincerely,
Alli Webb

Webb’s cofounder and CEO (and brother) Michael Landau also addressed the promotional problems on Thursday, telling Forbes, “When HBO approached us with this idea, we thought it was a no-brainer because we love 'Girls' and loved the idea of giving our clients free blowouts,” he said, while acknowledging the company “dramatically underestimated how strong the response would be.”

In case you're still wondering, all of the appointments are booked.

But it looks like now you can try getting into a SoulCycle class instead (HBO really knows the show's demo), as we just received this in our inbox:

SoulCycle Girls HBO

Something tells us HBO's next promotional partnership for "Girls" will be with a juice bar ...

AD OF THE DAY: Pixar's Brilliant 'Monsters University' College Recruitment Video

Pixar released a trailer for "Monsters University" during last week's Rose Bowl telecast. The preview is incredibly clever — the first half of it is exactly like the college recruitment ads that regularly play during the commercials of NCAA sporting events. The depiction of fictional MU is so lifelike, its doesn't feel animated either.

During the second part of the ad, monster characters provide student testimonials, and it's finally clear that the ad is a movie trailer. The website shown at the end of the ad, monstersuniversity.com/edu, is a real site that also acts as a spot-on parody of a real university's web page.

7 Movies With Backstage Antics That Inspired Other Films

$
0
0

Hitchcock

Just about anything can inspire a movie, but we don't often hear that another movie, and much less events behind-the-scenes, as being the muse for a film.

Our friends at mental_floss have rounded up seven films that were inspired by backstage events from other films.

"Plan 9 From Outer Space" (1957) / "Ed Wood" (1994)

By any standard, Edward Wood, Jr. was not a particularly good filmmaker. His films had highly noticeable continuity errors, backgrounds that wouldn’t stay still, and flying saucers that were clearly made of cardboard. He would have died in obscurity had it not been for the irony that his movies achieved cult status thanks to their sheer awfulness. Film critic siblings Harry and Michael Medved pronounced Plan 9 from Outer Space the worst film of all time, and David Letterman got laughs from his audiences simply by running clips from the film during the early days of his show.

Made with the last remaining footage of his late friend Bela Lugosi, Ed Wood’s dogged pursuit to make Plan 9 From Outer Space is the subject of Tim Burton’s 1994 movie Ed Wood. Johnny Depp plays the title character and Martin Landau plays Lugosi (he received the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the role). Burton paints Wood as not just a sympathetic figure but as the embodiment of a true auteur. Wood’s complete obliviousness to his lack of talent, and his unwavering optimism in the face of it, is seen as his biggest strength; it’s what wins the hearts of those around him and the audience. In fact, the film never allows Ed Wood to learn the reaction to his film: As Wood is walking out of the premiere of his film, he asks his girlfriend to elope with him instead of sticking around to hear critical opinion (which likely would have been negative). Both Tim Burton and Johnny Depp count Ed Wood among their greatest films.

"Nosferatu" (1922) / "Shadow of the Vampire" (2000)

F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu, one of the landmark films of the silent era, is the first of a great many films to be based on Bram Stoker’s famous novel Dracula. Without Nosferatu demonstrating the popularity of the vampire genre, we wouldn’t have Twilight, True Blood, or The Vampire Diaries. The film almost got shut down, however, because Stoker’s widow sued the studio over the unauthorized use of her husband’s novel (written in 1897). Murnau persisted with different names for his characters.

The most chilling aspect of the film is Max Schreck’s portrayal of the Dracula stand-in (dubbed “Count Orlock”). Because audiences in 1922 were so new to the horror genre, Schreck’s striking facial features made quite an impression on audiences, and rumors fueled among audiences at the time that Schreck was an actual vampire. It also helped that Schreck didn’t do a lot of acting afterwards (although a closer look at his filmography shows he did do a number of less notable films).

In the 2000 film Shadow of a Vampire, director E. Elias Merhige and writer Steven Katz do a backstage film about Nosterafu with a twist: In this fictionalized account, director F.W. Murnau’s (John Malkovich) film is such a success because he finds an actual vampire to play the role of the Count.

"African Queen" (1951) / "White Hunter Black Heart" (1990)

Many of acclaimed director John Huston’s films were adventure stories that were shot on location, which was something few studios allowed directors to do at that time. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre was shot in Mexico, Beat the Devil was shot in East Africa, and The Man Who Would Be King was shot in Morocco—but his most extreme location shoot was for the African Queen. The film, about a missionary (Katharine Hepburn) and a disheveled riverboat captain (Humphrey Bogart) travelling down Africa’s Zambezi River in World War I, was shot in a previously unmapped location in the Belgian Congo.

Pretty much the entire cast and crew got sick from dysentery, malaria, and snake bites. It didn’t help that Huston was a stubborn and strong-willed man who had a penchant for indulging in adventures. “He had a habit of losing interest in a project halfway through, and he indulged his passions for horses, drink, gambling and women as if he had the divine right to be supplied endlessly with same,” wrote Roger Ebert. In this particular case, Huston’s adventure of choice was shooting an elephant. When Huston first arrived in the Congo, he delayed production so he could go on a safari. When he failed to shoot an elephant on that outing, he refused to continue production until he succeeded in shooting one. Hepburn wrote in her autobiography that Huston convinced her to go hunting and inadvertently led her to a herd of wild animals from which the two were lucky to escape alive. She was among a number of people who theorized that Huston signed on to the movie just so he could go on safari.

Among those who got sick was screenwriter James Agee. A German-born screenwriter named Peter Viertel was sent to Africa as Agee’s replacement. Upon witnessing first-hand Huston’s mad quest to shoot an elephant, Viertel was inspired to write a semi-biographical novel about Huston centered around that experience. The novel was made into a movie by Clint Eastwood, who directed and starred as stubborn director John Wilson. Despite the name changes, the film sticks pretty close to the novel.

Some of the world's most famous authors, actors, directors, and pornography mavens got their start in advertising. They just didn't stay in the business.

Salman Rushdie might have received numerous awards for his literature, but he failed a copy test at JWT 40 years ago.

"The only question I remember was they asked you to imagine that you met a Martian who mysteriously spoke English and you had to explain to them in less than 100 words how to make toast," he told the IAPI during the Advertising Effectiveness Awards.

But Rushdie did snag freelance copywriter gigs for a decade at Charles Barker and Ogilvy & Mather, creating the tagline "That'll do nicely" for American Express and "Irresistibubble" for Aero bars.

John Hegarty of BBH critiqued Rushdie for not talking about his ad career during his success as a writer, adding,  "He did write crap ads ... admittedly."

Here's an ad for Fresh Cream Cake's "Naughty but Nice" advertisement. Rushdie came up with the tag line.

Steve Forbes' Conduct Questioned As Sex Scandal Engulfs School

The Brooks School, a prep school in North Andover, Massachusetts, sent a letter to the school community yesterday saying that a former headmaster of the school had engaged in an "objectionable, manipulative" and abusive relationship with a student in the late 1990s.

The purpose of the letter was to inform the community about the incident and ask whether there were other instances in which the headmaster, Lawrence W. Becker, had behaved inappropriately.

The headmaster's relationship with the student was not alleged to have been sexual, but it was discovered when an escort hired by Mr. Becker sent the school emails this summer (the escort was not a student). When confronted about the emails, Mr. Becker first lied about them and then admitted that the escort was threatening him.

A subsequent investigation into Mr. Becker's 22-year tenure at Brooks led to the discovery of the relationship with the student.

And it turns out that Becker's relationship with the student was known to, and investigated by, the chairman of the school's Board of Trustees at the time--the former Presidential candidate and publishing mogul Steve Forbes.

Brooks soccerMr. Forbes, a Brooks alumnus, served as chairman of the board from 1987 to 1997, the period in which the incident occurred.

Mr. Forbes was made aware of the relationship, the Brooks School says, and he investigated it. But Mr. Forbes did not inform the school community or the rest of Brooks board about it.

Yesterday, Forbes Media issued a statement to the New York Times about Mr. Forbes's conduct:

“A matter that came to the attention of the school was referred to the school’s legal counsel and was properly investigated and appropriate action was taken. Every step was undertaken with the advice and direction of the school’s outside counsel. The matter did not involve sexual abuse.”

Given the potential reputational damage and risk of future incidents after the discovery of an inappropriate relationship between the school's headmaster and a student, it seems strange that the entire Brooks board would not have been informed about what happened.

Lawrence W. BeckerWithout knowing more details about the relationship, however, as well as the precise steps Mr. Forbes and the school's outside counsel took during the investigation and how the matter was resolved, it's hard to pass judgement. There may well have been sound legal and other reasons why the information went no further than Mr. Forbes.

Now that Brooks has gone public about the incident, the school's handling of the investigation--and Mr. Forbes's decisions--will obviously come under scrutiny. And if other incidents are discovered, especially incidents that came after the inappropriate relationship, the school could face significant liability.

Here's the letter that Brooks sent to its community yesterday, via Barstool Sports Boston:

January 3, 2013

Dear Brooks Alumni, Parents and Friends,

We write to you today about a troubling matter. It involves Lawrence W. Becker, who served as headmaster of Brooks School from 1986 to 2008. After long deliberations, the school’s Board of Trustees has authorized this outreach because we have genuine concerns that cause us to carefully review Mr. Becker’s tenure at the school.

Last July and continuing throughout the summer, the school received a number of disturbing e-mails about Mr. Becker from an anonymous writer. After denying any knowledge regarding the emails, Mr. Becker eventually acknowledged in early September that he was being threatened by someone who, we later learned, was an escort whom Mr. Becker had hired in the fall of 2011.

Although these events took place after Mr. Becker retired as headmaster, his lack of candor with the school during this episode compelled us to look back at his tenure at the school. In so doing, we reviewed an incident in 2004, when several school employees received calls claiming that Mr. Becker had engaged in inappropriate sexual behavior while traveling alone on school business. Mr. Becker denied the allegations at the time and provided an account of his activities which, we now know, was untrue.

Unfortunately, we must also report one additional, disturbing situation. We have grave concerns about Mr. Becker’s relationship with a student while serving as headmaster. In our judgment, his conduct in this relationship was objectionable, manipulative, and an abuse of his position.

Each of these situations is completely inconsistent with the values of the school and, taken together, cause us to be profoundly concerned. In an effort to assess how best to handle this information, we consulted with a highly regarded psychologist with experience in relevant matters. He concurs that this letter is an advisable and prudent step. Thus, we are writing to ask if you have personal knowledge that calls into question Mr. Becker’s conduct and/or oversight during his tenure. A small group of trustees will join the two of us in considering anything you would like to share.

We do not take this step lightly. Brooks School grew and prospered during Mr. Becker’s tenure, and our alumni from that era have gone on to achieve great personal and professional success. We act now in the belief that this inquiry is compelled by our highest priority, which is the well-being of the students who have been entrusted to our care.

Arrested Development

Never doubt the power of a devoted audience: Time and again, adoring fan bases have brought television shows back from the brink of cancellation—or actual cancellation.

See the TV shows >

Shows like Family Guy and Futurama were resuscitated long after cancellation by the indirect fan actions of DVD purchases and the ratings of reruns on other networks, but sometimes fans take a much more direct role in rescuing their favorite programs.

Here are some of the most fantastic examples of shows saved by their passionate audiences.

"Chuck" fans created a campaign with a 3-part strategy.

If you ever want to head a campaign to save your favorite show, the one that kept Chuck on the air should be the first place you look for inspiration. The campaign—which was launched after the show received low ratings in its second season—involved a strong three-prong strategy that hit the minds, hearts, and pocket books of network executives.

Petitions and letter-writing campaigns were just the first part of the successful plan. Fans also started a “Have a Heart, Renew Chuck” program, which asked fans to donate money to the American Heart Association on behalf of NBC. By the time the effort ended, over $17,000 was donated to the charity.

Lastly, fans reached out to Subway, one of the show’s biggest sponsors, to help show that their financial support of the show was worth it. Fans organized to head to Subway to buy a footlong sub on the day of the second season finale and to drop comment cards at the restaurant saying they visited to support Chuck. This movement became so big that even the star of the show, Zachary Levi, participated by leading nearly a thousand fans to a Subway in England.

If there is one thing network executives love more than viewers, it’s money, so when Subway announced that it would become an even bigger sponsor of the show, it was pretty hard for the powers-that-be to deny the show a third season. Eventually, the show lasted a total of five seasons and won two Emmy awards and three TV Guide Awards.

"Star Trek" the most successful letter-writing campaign in TV history.

After the second season of Star Trek aired in 1967, rumors began to circulate that the show was going to be canceled. Trekkers/Trekkies jumped into action, creating arguably the most successful letter-writing campaign in television history.

Young fans even held protests at their schools. The largest was at Caltech, where 200 students marched from campus to NBC’s studio in Burbank carrying signs with such great slogans as “Vulcan Power” and “Draft Spock.”

NBC denied the cancellation rumors. In fact, after the March 1st episode, the network aired the following message: “And now an announcement of interest to all viewers of Star Trek. We are pleased to tell you that Star Trek will continue to be seen on NBC Television. We know you will be looking forward to seeing the weekly adventure in space on Star Trek.”

One season later, Star Trek was actually canceled. But the show thrived in syndication, even occasionally attracting more viewers on rerun nights than on the days the original episodes had aired. As the show continued to gain fans, eventually it inspired an animated series, many movies and spin-off television shows, and developed one of the most dedicated fan bases in geekdom.

"Jericho" fans sent 20 tons of nuts to CBS studio execs.

If you’ve ever wondered how residents of a small town would survive after a nuclear war, then you should definitely check out Jericho. When you get to season two, thank the fans who kept the show on after one of the silliest campaigns to save a program.

When Jericho was canceled after its first season, the show’s fans—inspired by the main character shouting “nuts” during an epic battle in the season finale—sent over 20 tons of nuts to CBS studio executives, who then decided to review the show’s ratings. Network researchers looked at the numbers and announced that the show actually had quite a few more viewers than Nielsen reported because the show received so much online streaming and was viewed so often on DVRs.

As a result, Jericho was renewed for one more season, but when ratings still declined, it was canceled for good—even after a second “nuts” campaign. The show’s storyline was continued in a six-part comic book series though, which allowed creators to wrap up the plotlines. In fact, some fans call the comics the “third season” of the show.
