harvey weinstein

After numerous sexual assault and harassment allegations against Harvey Weinstein, similar accusations against multiple famous and powerful men have surfaced.

Women and men have become emboldened by the voices of Weinstein's accusers, and are now coming forward with allegations of sexual misconduct, in what is being referred to as the "Weinstein ripple effect."

Here is a list of men who have been accused of sexual misconduct since the Weinstein allegations broke:

SEE ALSO: The company Harvey Weinstein built has been hit with its first new lawsuit for allegedly enabling his sexual abuse

Ben Affleck

Actress Hilarie Burton accused Ben Affleck of groping her breast during a 2003 interview.

Burton tweeted a video of the alleged groping and wrote, "Girls. I'm so impressed with you brave ones. I had to laugh back then so I wouldn't cry. Sending love."

Affleck quickly tweeted an apology to Burton, saying he had "acted inappropriately."

Makeup artist Annamarie Tendler also accused Affleck of groping her, during a Golden Globes party in 2014 (in a tweet).

Affleck has yet to respond to Tendler's tweet.

A representative for Ben Affleck declined Business Insider's request to comment.

Roy Price

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Isa Hackett alleged that former head of Amazon Studios Roy Price sexually harassed her while they were promoting the series "The Man in the High Castle" in 2015.

Hackett is author Philip K. Dick's daughter, and worked as an executive producer on the series based on her father's book.

Hackett said she met Price on July 10, 2015, at San Diego's Comic-Con to promote the series with him, and that he invited her to an Amazon staff party that evening. She and Price shared a cab to the party, where Hackett said that Price told her, "You will love my d--k."

According to Hackett, she declined Price's advances, but his inappropriate behavior persisted throughout the evening, and at one point Hackett said he whispered the words "a--l sex" into her ear.

Hackett said she reported Price's behavior to Amazon immediately.

After The Hollywood Reporter's article was published, Amazon suspended Price indefinitely, and soon after Price resigned from his position at Amazon.

Price has yet to address the allegations against him, or his resignation.

Bob Weinstein

Amanda Segel, the former executive producer of "The Mist" series, accused Bob Weinstein of consistently making unwanted advances on her, in an interview with Variety.

"The Mist" was being produced by The Weinstein Company, and while working on the project with Weinstein, Segel said he continued to ask her out to dinner, despite her repeatedly telling him she was uninterested in a romantic relationship. Segal said that his advances only stopped once she told The Weinstein Company that she would leave "The Mist" if his behavior continued.

“‘No’ should be enough,” Segel said. “After ‘no,’ anybody who has asked you out should just move on. Bob kept referring to me that he wanted to have a friendship. He didn’t want a friendship. He wanted more than that. My hope is that ‘no’ is enough from now on.”

Weinstein's lawyer Ben Fields released a statement to Variety denying Segel's allegations.

“There is no way in the world that Bob Weinstein is guilty of sexual harassment, and even if you believed what this person asserts there is no way it would amount to that,” Fields said.

Bob Weinstein did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

How the screenwriter of 'American Sniper' convinced Steven Spielberg he was ready to direct

Jason Hall Alberto Rodriguez Getty

  • Jason Hall, director of the upcoming movie "Thank You for Your Service," first got into the business as an actor in the late 1990s.
  • After a stint in rehab and his own personal "welcome to Hollywood" moment, he turned to screenwriting.
  • Hall convinced Steven Spielberg to give him a chance at directing after earning an Oscar nomination for writing "American Sniper."

The way things were playing out for Jason Hall at the start of his career, the combination of hard luck and personal demons could have led to him being just another rising star who faded out too quickly.

Coming out to Hollywood as an actor in the 1990s after studying film at USC, Hall had the tools to make it. He had chiseled looks and studied acting with some of the best teachers after going through a two-year Meisner acting course. That quickly landed him work on a few TV shows, including a recurring role as Devon MacLeish on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”

He had also caught the eye of James Toback. The Oscar-nominated screenwriter behind “Bugsy” and director of movies like “Fingers” and “The Pick-up Artist” was trying to get “Harvard Man” off the ground, a movie about a Harvard basketball player who throws a game for the mob and then tries to fend off both them and the FBI while on a bad LSD trip.

The time James Toback was going to make him a movie star

A female friend of Hall’s had met Toback at an airport and the director wanted to audition her for the movie, Hall recalled. He said his friend thought Toback was “a little bit strange” but she took the script and, after realizing she wasn’t right for the movie, passed on it, instead telling Toback to consider Hall for the male lead. (Toback has recently been accused by over 30 women of sexual harassment.)

“I had been to prep school and I had done some of the experimentation that the character in the movie had and he was like, ‘You're the guy! I've sat down with everybody in Hollywood and you’re the guy,’” Hall told Business Insider over the phone earlier this month (before the Toback sexual harassment story broke).

But nothing in Hollywood goes according to plan, and “Harvard Man” was Hall’s first lesson in that.

As Toback tried to get financing, Hall said the two would often work together on scenes from the script but also do a lot of things that had nothing to do with the movie. One time, Hall picked up Toback from a Los Angeles airport and drove him to a Beverly Hills bank, where Toback withdrew cash so he could then race off to Las Vegas to gamble.

“It was a strange relationship,” Hall said, looking back.

But what came out of it was the first important decision of Hall’s career: He went to rehab for substance abuse and got himself clean. When he got out, Toback was ready to make “Harvard Man,” but not with Hall.

“I came back and he said, ‘You changed!’” Hall recalled. “And I’m like, ‘I stopped doing all that nonsense so I can do the work,’ and he said, ‘Yeah, but now you’re not the guy. I don’t see it anymore.’” (Business Insider contacted Toback for comment but did not get a response.) “Entourage” star Adrian Grenier eventually landed the lead role in the movie, which was released in 2001.

That led to the second most important decision of Hall’s career: writing his first screenplay.

From struggling actor to Oscar-nominated screenwriter

“I was like, am I going to be James Toback’s guy on acid or am I going to live a clean life and try to pursue a career in the arts and not die by the time I’m 35,” Hall said. “So I started writing scripts for myself.”

He thought the plan was foolproof. Feeling he could come up with better material than the scripts he was auditioning for, he decided to write himself into his own scripts and make the deals for them contingent on him acting in them (a la what Sylvester Stallone did with “Rocky” or Matt Damon and Ben Affleck with “Good Will Hunting”).

But it didn’t go according to plan. Hall found interest for the scripts but no one wanted him to act in them. He finally relinquished his dreams of being a movie star and decided to move forward as a screenwriter. The first script he sold was the 2009 movie “Spread,” starring Ashton Kutcher. He also got a writing credit on the 2013 Liam Hemsworth thriller, “Paranoia.”

Then he hit pay dirt around 2011 when he got his hands on the yet unpublished memoir of the deadliest marksman in US military history, Chris Kyle. Hall spent time with Kyle and his friends, earned their trust, wrote the screenplay, and got Bradley Cooper involved, but nothing happened until two months after Kyle’s murder at the hands of a former Marine suffering from PTSD in February 2013. Steven Spielberg read the script for “American Sniper” and bought it for his company, DreamWorks, with an eye to direct it.

bradley cooper american sniperClint Eastwood would end up directing, and with Cooper starring as Kyle, “American Sniper” went go on to become one of the surprise hits of 2014, earning over $350 million domestically of its $547.4 million worldwide total (the movie was made for $58.8 million) and getting six Oscar nominations, including one for Hall. The film would end up winning an Oscar for best sound editing.

But that wasn’t the last gift Spielberg gave Hall. While writing drafts of the “American Sniper” script for Spielberg, the legendary director said he had something else he thought Hall would be good to work on.

“I think we were working for two months on ‘American Sniper’ and he came in and dropped a book on the table,” Hall said. “He said he wanted to do more for the veterans.”

Convincing Spielberg he can direct — and almost getting kicked off a plane in the process

The book was “Thank You for Your Service,” written by journalist David Finkel, and it examined the recent string of soldiers coming home and struggling to adjust to civilian life.

“Spielberg and I both loved that aspect of the story, what the coming home was like,” Hall said. “And Spielberg posed the question after reading the book, ‘You don't think this and ‘American Sniper’ are too similar?’ I said there are similar aspects but only in as much as one is the story of Achilles and other is the story of Odysseus. ‘Thank You for Your Service’ can be the homecoming.”

Like “American Sniper,” Hall could tell that, with Spielberg’s work load, he probably wouldn’t get around to directing “Thank You for Your Service,” so while writing the script he threw his hat in the ring.

Following a pitch call — which Hall said occurred while he was in the middle of boarding an airplane and the flight attendants were close to kicking him off because he wouldn’t hang up the phone — Hall scored a formal meeting with Spielberg to interview for the directing job. His persistence paid off, and he got the gig in June of 2015.

“Thank You for Your Service” follows a group of soldiers (among them Miles Teller) returning from Iraq who struggle to integrate back into civilian life with their families. Dealing with both physical and mental wounds, the men's search for normalcy often brings them back to each other to find strength to continue on.

“I felt like this was a way to bring all these guys all the way home,” Hall said of the cloak of PTSD that hangs over the movie. It's a struggle he said he’d seen with countless veterans, including Kyle, whom he felt had turned a corner when they spoke over the phone for what turned out to be the final time two days before his murder.

“I felt the guy was making it home,” Hall said of Kyle. “I heard him laugh and be at ease in a way that I hadn’t before.”

Thank You For Your Service 2 DreamWorks.JPG“There’s a whole other battle to fight once a solider comes to the decision to seek help,” Hall continued. “I definitely relate to that, realizing I needed help and being in a place of struggling but knowing I needed help.”

But Hall says he knows his struggle with substance abuse pales in comparison to what most veterans deal with, simply because of the overworked and chaotic US Department of Veterans Affairs they have to deal with to get help. The frustrations veterans have with the VA is something that Hall prominently puts in his movie after numerous visits he took to the VA in Los Angeles before shooting.

“It’s a circus down there,” he said. “They are out there all day to get help and the place sometimes just cut it off and say, ‘We’re done, come back tomorrow.’ It’s hard enough for these guys to admit some kind of vulnerability, so when they are able to take that courageous step to ask for help the help should be there for them.”

Hall has found his niche in Hollywood by telling stories about American heroes coping with life beyond the battlefield. And if it’s up to him, his most epic look at the topic will come next.

He’s got a script in the drawer titled “The Virginian” he’s trying to get into production about a conflicted young George Washington who tries to conquer a French fort. Getting the project off the ground won’t come easy, but if it’s one thing Hall knows, it never is.

“Thank You for Your Service” opens in theaters on Friday.

Noting that it's 'not at all presidential,' Trump attacks 'Sloppy Michael Moore'

  • Trump criticized documentarian Michael Moore in a tweet, noting that his statement was "not at all presidential."
  • Trump also said Moore's Broadway show was "forced to close," which was not true.
  • Moore's show, which had anti-Trump themes, was a 12-week, limited-run production.

President Donald Trump on Saturday slammed a vocal critic of his via Twitter, but admitted that his tweet was "not at all presidential."

"While not at all presidential I must point out that the Sloppy Michael Moore Show on Broadway was a TOTAL BOMB and was forced to close. Sad!" Trump wrote.

Trump was apparently referring to the documentarian Michael Moore's Broadway debut, a one-man show titled "The Terms of My Surrender."

Moore's show was a limited-run production that ran for 12 weeks as scheduled, and was not "forced to close." Playbill, which tracks Broadway show ticket sales, said Moore's show grossed $4.2 million.

The show contained a decidedly anti-Trump theme, and had even advertised the production with the question, "Can a Broadway show bring down a sitting president?"

In a statement on the show's closing night, Moore said the show will go on tour next summer.

The 9 biggest questions we have after watching 'Stranger Things' season 2

Stranger Things 2Warning: Major spoilers for season 2 of "Stranger Things" lie ahead. Read at your own risk.

The second season of "Stranger Things" was somehow loaded with even more monsters, characters, Eggo waffles, teen romance, and Upside Down drama than the first season.

So, obviously, we have a lot of questions that may or may not keep us up at night until the inevitable season three arrives on Netflix, which could take well over a year.

Here are all of our biggest questions after watching "Stranger Things" season 2:

SEE ALSO: I watched all of 'Stranger Things' season 2 — and the best thing about it is it never tries to top season 1

Can the shadow monster break the gate between the Upside Down and the real world?

The gang contains the shadow monster when Eleven closes the gate to the Upside Down, but they definitely don't defeat it. The tease at the end of the season shows that this is definitely not the last we'll see of the shadow monster.

The shadow monster is coming for the people of Hawkins, but how, and why? With the gate to the Upside Down closed and Hawkins Lab abandoned, how can the shadow monster break into the outside world? Does the shadow monster just want to kill (eat) everybody?

Will the Upside Down ever affect anyone outside of Hawkins? Or anyone in Hawkins who doesn't already know about it?

"Stranger Things" is at its best when the events and the characters are confined to the town of Hawkins, Indiana. At this point, Hawkins appears to be the only town in the world affected by these supernatural events. And, more specifically, the people affected by them seem to be the ones who know about it, or the people close to them.

Bob sacrifices himself the the demodogs (or stupidly just stands there when he knew he was being hunted), but he knew about the Upside Down for at least a day, and was dating Joyce Byers, who knew about it.

We also see the tunnels affect farmers in the area. But at what point does the very dangerous Upside Down become an actual life or death threat to other people outside of the main cast? For the threat to feel believable, it will have to grow moving forward.

Is there anyone left to hunt down Eleven? AKA: Is Dr. Brenner alive or dead?

The last we see of Dr. Brenner in season one, the Demogorgon attacks him, implying that he doesn't survive. But on Eleven's trip to Chicago, Eight implies that he could be alive, and uses her powers to make Eleven see him.

Pretty much everyone except Dr. Owens is dead, and he's helping Hopper protect her. So who's after Eleven, now that all employees at Hawkins Lab are demodog meat? Dr. Brenner might be out there somewhere, conducting more experiments outside of Hawkins. And he could be coming for Eleven and Eight next. Eleven believed Dr. Brenner was dead as Barb, but after visiting Eight in Chicago, she's not so sure. And we're not, either.

Another quiet weekend at the box office as everyone stayed home to binge 'Stranger Things' (NFLX)

Jigsaw Brooke Palmer Linosgate final

  • "Jigsaw" won the weekend box office with an estimated $16 million.
  • It was another weak performance by the box office, as many were likely home watching "Stranger Things" on Netflix.
  • "Jigsaw" had the second-lowest opening of any movie in the "Saw" franchise.
  • The George Clooney-directed "Suburbicon" was given a D- CinemaScore.

With Halloween coming on Tuesday, Hollywood was hoping the resurgence of a classic scary movie franchise over the weekend would bring in business, but most found that Netflix had something better to offer.

Lionsgate dusted off its profitable "Saw" franchise with the release of "Jigsaw" over the weekend. It did its job and won the weekend, but only took in an estimated $16.25 million, according to Exhibitor Relations.

That's the second-lowest opening for the franchise, which in the early 2000s was averaging around $30 million opening weekend per-film. Only 2009's "Saw VI" ($14.1 million) had a lower opening weekend.

But with a $10 million production budget and bare-bones marketing, Lionsgate can't be too disappointed.

However, Hollywood in general has to look at this weekend and see it as just another indication that young people just aren't motivated to go to the movie theater week in, week out anymore.

Suburbicon ParamountWith the highly anticipated season 2 of "Stranger Things" made available on Netflix Friday, the show has been the dominant chatter on social media and clearly was what the country was excited to check out this Halloween weekend.

But perhaps the studios knew that and conceded.

The major studios' only had two offerings. Universal's coming home war movie "Thank You for Your Service," which despite being directed by the screenwriter of "American Sniper" and starring Miles Teller, only took in $3.7 million.

And Paramount suffered another major dud with the release of the George Clooney-directed, Matt Damon starrer, "Suburbicon." The studio has now come off the F CinemaScore grade its Darren Aronofsky thriller "mother!" received in September with "Suburbicon" getting a D- grade this month by the exit poll tracking company. The movie opened with $2.8 million.

But there's always next week. Marvel will come to the industry's rescue when it opens the anticipated "Thor: Ragnarok" on Friday.

The FBI warned Bobby Kennedy a book was coming out revealing his affair with Marilyn Monroe and blaming him for her death

bobby kennedy jfk rfk

  • In 1964, the FBI sent then-Attorney General Robert "Bobby" Kennedy information about a forthcoming book purporting to reveal his affair with Marilyn Monroe.
  • The author, who often dabbled in "extremely questionable" allegations, according to the Bureau, published the 70-page book for $2 a copy.
  • This unexpected bit of history comes from the release of 2,800 previously classified JFK files.

In the summer of 1964, the FBI spent two weeks investigating a tip from author Frank Capell that he was publishing a 70-page book outlining Bobby Kennedy's alleged affair with Marilyn Monroe, accusing him and the Kennedy clan of being responsible for her death.

This unexpected bit of history comes from the release of over 2,800 previously classified documents about President John F. Kennedy's assassination in November 1963. President Donald Trump allowed the release of the so-called JFK files on Thursday.

It has long been rumored that Bobby Kennedy — who was married to Ethel Kennedy — had an affair with Monroe after JFK "passed her off to his brother," as People puts it.

"Did the trouble begin when Marilyn realized that her VIP had no intention of getting a divorce and marrying her?" Capell wrote in the "The Strange Death of Marilyn Monroe," labeling Bobby Kennedy "VIP." He added, "Since Marilyn could destroy him either by talking or with written evidence, did he decide to take drastic action?"

Capell went on to accuse Kennedy of using "the Communist Conspiracy which is an expert in the scientific elimination of its enemies" to murder Monroe.

In official memos, the FBI calls the rumored affair and allegation that Kennedy was with Monroe when she died "utterly false." Kennedy was the attorney general at the time, and thus oversaw the Bureau, raising questions about why FBI agents might have been looking into potentially salacious material about their boss.

Monroe died on August 5, 1962 at her home in Los Angeles. The coroner concluded it was "probably suicide" from a barbiturate overdose.

marilyn monroe

"The above allegation concerning the Attorney General has been previously circulated and has been branded as false as the Attorney General was actually in San Francisco with his wife at the time Marilyn Monroe committed suicide," an FBI agent from New York wrote.

The New York office was instructed to "follow this matter very closely," and send two copies of Capell's book to FBI headquarters once they were published so Kennedy could be "kept advised."

On July 15, 1964, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover sent Kennedy a copy of the book, writing that Capell "claims that you had a close relationship with Miss Monroe."

In March 1976, Sen. Frank Church requested "all FBI materials pertaining to communications between FBI Director Hoover and Attorney General Robert Kennedy with respect to the publication of a book about Marilyn Monroe by Frank Capell," suggesting he may have known such communications existed. In April, the FBI complied.

That's the last document in the entry named "Marilyn Monroe" in the JFK files.

Church conducted a far-reaching investigation into US intelligence agencies after Watergate. The Monroe files he requested fell under the JFK Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992, and were released to the public on October 26, 2017.

Kevin Spacey comes out as gay after actor accuses him of sexual misconduct

Kevin Spacey

"House of Cards" star Kevin Spacey came out as gay late Sunday night after actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of making a sexual advance toward him when Rapp was 14.

Spacey released a statement on Twitter following the accusation published by BuzzFeed News on Sunday. Rapp told the publication that when he was 14, Spacey had invited him to a party at his Manhattan apartment. Rapp, who was starring in a Broadway production at the time, attended the party, and said Spacey later found Rapp watching TV in a bedroom, placed him on the bed, and laid on top of him. “I still to this day can't wrap my head around so many aspects of it. It's just deeply confusing to me,” Rapp told BuzzFeed News.

Rapp said he left Spacey's apartment unscathed and had not spoken to Spacey since. Neither Spacey nor his representatives responded to multiple requests for comment, BuzzFeed News' Adam B. Vary wrote, but Spacey released a lengthy statement on Twitter Sunday night, saying he "beyond horrified" to hear Rapp's accusations, and characterizing them as "deeply inappropriate drunken behavior."

Spacey went on to say that he has "loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life and I choose now to live as a gay man."

The Nintendo Switch is on track to beat the all-time sales of its last console — in just a year

Super Mario Odyssey

  • Nintendo is projecting sales of 14 million units for its Switch console in its first year.
  • The projection is a revision upward from a previous estimate of 10 million in year one.
  • That puts the Switch on track to outsell the console it replaced, in entirely, in its first year of sales.

Nintendo's last console, the Wii U, was a flop. Nintendo's new console, the Switch, is a hit.

This fact is plain to see in Nintendo's recently revised sales projection for the Switch: The Japanese gaming giant is expecting to move 14 million Switch consoles by March 2018. And, with just over 13 million Wii U consoles sold across its lifetime, that means Nintendo's going to outsell its previous console with its new console in the first year of sales.

To put that in perspective, the Wii U was available for five years as Nintendo's main home game console. In that time, Nintendo only sold around 13 million units — less than one-tenth of the lifetime sales of its previous console, the Wii.

The Switch, notably, went on sale in late March 2017. It arrived with one huge launch game, "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild," and Nintendo followed that huge launch with a regular cadence of major games.

That strategy is paying off, as the Switch is now on track to outsell its predecessor in year one.

Super Mario Odyssey

Between "Breath of the Wild" launching alongside the Switch in March, "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" in April, "Splatoon 2" in the summer, and "Super Mario Odyssey" just last week, the Nintendo Switch now has a mess of great games. More than just great games, these are games that you can only play on Switch— which makes a huge difference.

There are no other considerations to make when you decide you want to play Nintendo's latest big games — they're available in one place.

Additionally, the Switch itself is inexpensive ($300) and comes with a unique hook: The ability to play games anywhere. The Switch comes with a dock that you slot it into when you're at home, so you can play it on your TV; it also comes with two gamepads that slide onto each side of the console, turning it into a handheld game system. In reality, that means you can easily play games at home or on-the-go.

Though there aren't any other huge games coming to the Switch in 2017, the future is bright for Nintendo's latest console. New entries from franchises like Pokémon, Yoshi, and Kirby are all in the works, some of which are planned for 2018. In the meantime, though, it sounds like fans are already eating up what Nintendo is offering.

amityville the awakening dimension films final

  • Following the Harvey Weinstein scandal, "Amityville: The Awakening" is The Weinstein Company's first release.
  • It's only playing in 10 theaters.
  • The movie is as cursed as the topic it's based on.

You probably didn't hear about it, but this weekend The Weinstein Company released its first movie since the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

"Amityville: The Awakening," released through the company's genre arm Dimension Films (which is run by Bob Weinstein), only opened on 10 screens — and as you can imagine the result was disastrous.

The movie only earned $742, according to Box Office Mojo. That's a $74 per-screen average.

But that's just the closing chapter of what looks to be a cursed project.

The movie, produced by Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions (behind "Get Out" and "Split"), was originally announced in 2011 to be a found-footage horror titled "Amityville: The Lost Tapes." However, after a few years of delays, the movie was completely rewritten by the current director Franck Khalfoun and titled just "Amityville." In 2014, it was announced Bella Thorne and Jennifer Jason Leigh would star in it.

Finally going with the title "Amityville: The Awakening," it was shot in May of 2015 and was originally to be released in January 2015. Following more release date changes, negative test screenings, and reshoots, the movie was set for release in June 2017.

But that never happened.

And in September, it was announced that the movie would be released for free on Google Play from October 12 to November 8 and open in theaters on October 28.

TheAmityvilleHorrorAmericanInternationalPicturesThe movie was a plan for The Weinstein Company/Dimension/Blumhouse to reboot the classic 1979 original movie, "The Amityville Horror," which was based on the true story of newlyweds who moved into a house where a mass murder occurred and began to experience strange happenings. A previous reboot was done in 2005 starring Ryan Reynolds.

The "Amityville: The Awakening" saga is just the latest roller-coaster journey for a movie released by TWC.

The most recent happened to "Tulip Fever," the 17th century period drama starring Alicia Vikander and Christoph Waltz, which was finally released in September after countless release date changes since 2015.

But "Amityville" also had to deal with the Harvey Weinstein scandal as well. The movie is TWC's first release since it was revealed over three weeks ago in stories, done by the New York Times and The New Yorker, that its founder allegedly sexually harassed and assaulted women for over three decades.

And it's hard to tell if TWC will have another release after "Amityville."

While there are reports that the company may be sold to Colony Capital, the release date for its end-of-year awards contender "The Current War," starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon, has been pulled. While its other big upcoming title, "Paddington 2," is trying to get out of its distribution deal with TWC.

Kevin Spacey came out as gay after being accused of sexual misconduct, and people are not happy

Kevin Spacey

  • After being accused of sexually assaulting actor Anthony Rapp in 1986, when Rapp was 14 years old, actor Kevin Spacey issued an apology in which he came out as gay.
  • Spacey blamed drunkenness for his actions.
  • There had been rumors that Spacey was gay for years, but he had never come out, and kept his personal life very private.
  • Many people are upset that Spacey used his apology as an opportunity to come out.

Actor Kevin Spacey ("House of Cards") came out as gay on Sunday night. He delivered the news on Twitter in an apology to actor Anthony Rapp, who accused Spacey, now 58, of making a sexual advance on him in 1986,  when Rapp was 14 years old.

Here's Spacey's apology:

The fact that Spacey used his apology as an opportunity to finally come out (there had been rumors for years, just no confirmation since Spacey is a very private person), has upset a lot of people. Rapp said that the alleged incident, which happened when he was a minor, deeply affected him. And some people felt that Spacey's apology tried to shift the narrative away from Rapp, and that Spacey's excuse for his behavior (drunkenness) was nowhere close to sufficient.

"You do not get to 'choose' to hide under the rainbow," comedian Wanda Sykes tweeted.

On Monday morning, Sarah Kate Ellis, the president and CEO of GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) said, "Coming-out stories should not be used to deflect from allegations of sexual assault. This is not a coming-out story about Kevin Spacey, but a story of survivorship by Anthony Rapp and all those who bravely speak out against unwanted sexual advances."

Here are some of the ways people are reacting to Spacey's apology on Twitter:

Rose McGowan says Harvey Weinstein offered her $1 million in hush money, days before bombshell sexual misconduct allegations broke

  • Actress Rose McGowan told The New York Times she received a $1 million offer for her silence from someone close to Harvey Weinstein in late September.
  •  She said she declined the offer one day before a bombshell Times report set off a deluge of sexual harassment and assault allegations against Weinstein.
  • McGowan has accused Weinstein of rape.

In September, days before a series of bombshell reports alleged sexual harassment and assault against Harvey Weinstein, actress Rose McGowan said someone close to the film mogul offered her $1 million in hush money, The New York Times reportsMcGowan is one of Weinstein's alleged sexual assault victims.

McGowan told the Times that the offer, presented to her through her lawyer, included signing a non-disclosure agreement.

She said she considered taking the offer and made an unsuccessful counter offer of $6 million, due to her depleted funds. Ultimately, she decided to decline the offer one day before The New York Times broke a story in which multiple women in Hollywood accused Weinstein of sexual harassment.

"I figured I could probably have gotten him up to three," McGowan told the Times of her counter offer. "But I was like — ew, gross, you're disgusting, I don’t want your money, that would make me feel disgusting."

McGowan had reached a $100,000 settlement with Weinstein in 1997 over an incident in a hotel room, but she told the Times on Saturday that she learned over the summer that the agreement she signed had not included a confidentiality clause.

On October 12, a week after the New York Times first reported allegations against Weinstein, McGowan tweeted that she was raped by "HW," and confirmed that the initials signified Harvey Weinstein. She had previously said that she was a survivor of rape and that her assault was perpetrated by an unnamed, powerful studio boss.

Since the first Times report, over 60 women have accused Weinstein of sexual harassment or assault, including multiple rape claims.

Anthony Bourdain condemns Quentin Tarantino for 'living a life of complicity and shame'

  • Anthony Bourdain called out Quentin Tarantino for "living a life of complicity and shame and compromise."
  • Tarantino recently admitted he had been aware of producer Harvey Weinstein's alleged sexual misconduct and wished he had "taken responsibility."
  • Bourdain's girlfriend Asia Argento is one of Weinstein's accusers.

During a Q&A on Saturday, celebrity chef and host of "Parts Unknown" Anthony Bourdain took aim at director Quentin Tarantino's relationship to Harvey Weinstein, according to Deadline.

Bourdain and his producing partner, Lydia Tenaglia, revealed that a media mogul (who they refused to name) offered them an incredibly lucrative deal after they left the Travel Channel, but they turned down the offer.

Bourdain remarked that moving forward with the deal, “would have eaten us alive."

"It would have destroyed everything – everything that makes us good, everything that makes us happy, our quality of life," Bourdain said. "It would have been a lethal compromise, a slow-acting poison that would have eaten away our souls until we ended up like Quentin Tarantino, living a life of complicity and shame and compromise.”

Tarantino, who worked with Harvey Weinstein for years, recently told the New York Times he was aware of many of the allegations against the producer, and wished he had "taken responsibility" for what he knew.

"There was more to it than just the normal rumors, the normal gossip," Tarantino said. "It wasn’t secondhand. I knew he did a couple of these things. I knew enough to do more than I did.”

Bourdain's girlfriend Asia Argento also took aim at Tarantino following Bourdain's remarks. Argento tweeted, "One might think we all need to slam Tarantino's complicity with Harvey Weinstein."

Argento accused Weinstein of raping her in the bombshell New Yorker report that unearthed numerous sexual harassment and assault accusations against Harvey Weinstein.

We went to the most Instagrammed restaurant in America that has a sundae with 28 scoops of ice cream

Lost of restaurants these days have unique items that have customers whipping out their phones to take a pic and share it with their friends. But Sugar Factory takes the cake when it comes to Instagrammable food and drinks, with a broad range of colorful, and visually stunning items to choose from on its menu.  We spoke with Sugar Factory partner Tom Recine about some of their most popular items, what exactly makes them Instagrammable, and how Instagram has affected their business. Following is a transcript of the video.

Customers: "Sugar!"

Tom Recine: Pretty much every single table will have their camera out, because they see something they think is fantastic.

Sugar Factory is a restaurant, bar, retail, and many, many other things actually that's rolled into one.

In 2016, this was the number one Instagrammed restaurant in the country, if not the world.

It's a fantastic tool for us. I think it has definitely grown our business. When we create something, it's to create a "wow." And that turns into an Instagram moment. I think it's definitely the best marketing tool there is on the planet. There's no question about that.

We stay very, very relevant in everything that we do.

We have something that's called a Couture Pop. It's a blinged stem with a screw-on lollipop top. That is backed by stars like Britney Spears and Kim Kardashian and many, many others. That's one thing that helped brand Sugar Factory.

Many, many celebrities come in on their own. Some celebrities there licensee ti-ins. We do a really good job of taking care of them, making them feel comfortable here. They respond with a lot of Instagram and Tweets on their own.

One thing is it can't be kitschy or hokey. It has to be relevant. I think people obviously, they eat with her eyes first. It's appealing to the eyes. It's something that everybody associates with. And it's something that everyone just has to have.

We sell a lot of drinks. We sell a lot of goblets. The Drake goblet is a new item on our menu that has just exploded. People are loving that. We have at something called a Lollipop Passion. I think the Lollipop Passion is the number one most instagrammed food or beverage item.

We also have an insane milkshake. The Sugar Daddy. And we have rainbow sliders with colored buns. Our King Kong Sundae is probably the number one dessert. It's a sundae that has 28 scoops of ice cream. And it's garnished with all kinds of candies and Unicorn Pops. And then two sparklers go in it. And the team celebrates a guest's birthday in a way that no other restaurant does.

Sometimes it's taking something that's tried and true, something that people really understand, and taking it to 2 or 3 levels higher. When that happens, you have a winner.

How Microsoft helped one of its biggest video game rivals do something great for its players

Roblox CEO David Baszucki

  • Roblox, a popular online game with 56 million players, will let Xbox One gamers play with their friends on smartphones and PCs, starting later this week.
  • Microsoft helped Roblox build the feature — despite the fact that Roblox is a chief competitor to Microsoft's own Minecraft.
  •  Roblox CEO David Baszucki also hints that versions for the Nintendo Switch or Sony PlayStation 4 could be in the pipeline, though he says their focus is currently elsewhere.

Roblox, a massively popular online game, is giving its Microsoft Xbox One fans an early Halloween treat: Starting later this week, Roblox gamers on the Xbox One will be able to play with their friends on PCs and smartphones.

Previously, Roblox users on the Xbox One could only play with each other. Meanwhile, Roblox has let smartphones, tablets, and PCs all play together in harmony for years now. With this update, the Xbox One joins the fun.

Now, if you're older than, say, 15, there's a healthy chance you've never heard of Roblox — a free online game, especially popular with kids. All of the games on Roblox are created by players, for players, and sold on a free-to-play basis, turning a few lucky teens into video game millionaires.

So far, Roblox is available for Xbox One, PCs, smartphones, tablets, and virtual reality headsets, but Roblox CEO David Baszucki tells Business Insider that the company is considering making versions for consoles like the Sony PlayStation 4 or Nintendo Switch, too — though it's not necessarily where Roblox's focus lies at the moment.

"It's natural to assume Roblox will be on more and more platforms," says Baszucki.

So what is Roblox, and where does Microsoft come in?

While the two games are very different, Roblox competes for much the same demographic as Minecraft, the phenomenon that Microsoft paid $2.5 billion to acquire in 2014. However, Roblox actually has slightly more players at the moment, 56 million monthly active users to Minecraft's last reported 55 million.

Which makes it a little funny that Microsoft actually helped Roblox to accomplish the feat of getting this cross-platform play running. According to Roblox CEO David Baszucki, Microsoft came in and helped the company smooth out the technical wrinkles involved in letting the Xbox One "talk" to Roblox players on other platforms.

"They've welcomed us as if we were a completely neutral partner," says Baszucki. He sees it as "a testament to Microsoft's vision under [CEO] Satya [Nadella] as being part of a more connected world."

roblox murder mystery 2

In fact, Baszucki says that Microsoft helped bring Roblox to the Xbox One in the first place. Because all the games and characters on Roblox are generated and sold by players for real money, it presented a tricky challenge: the Xbox One wasn't really built for letting players swap and sell their own creations.

Baszucki says Microsoft worked with them to figure out a solution, growing from a small, curated selection of games and content into a full-fledged version of the core marketplace. Now Roblox's developers have a real opportunity to make money from Xbox gamers, while simultaneously giving those gamers more games to play for free.

"It's gonna make Roblox much more fun," says Baszucki.

Cross-play is a Microsoft passion project

Microsoft has called for an online gaming amnesty, urging developers and publishers to make it possible for Xbox owners to play with Nintendo Switch, Sony PlayStation, and Windows PC players. It would knock down one of the oldest barriers in online gaming.

roblox meep city

The company put its money where its mouth is, too, with a recent update to Minecraft that allows for cross-play between Apple iOS, Android, the Xbox 360, the Xbox One, Windows 10, and even the Nintendo Switch. However, Sony has yet to play ball— a problem that Roblox isn't facing, at least not yet, given that there's no PlayStation version.

Still, that makes it little wonder that Microsoft would play ball. Besides, anything that makes Roblox better for Xbox One gamers is going to help Microsoft sell more Xbox consoles this holiday season.

JEFFERIES: Nintendo's Switch is selling like crazy, and won't slow down anytime soon

Super Mario Odyssey (live action video)

Nintendo's Switch game console is one of the hottest items in tech right now. It has been delighting users for months, and it doesn't look like its popularity will be waning anytime soon.

The company just updated its forecast for the Switch, and now it's predicting that the new console will outsell the Wii U's lifetime sales in just its first year. Nintendo updated its year-long sales projections from 10 million to 14 million units for the Switch.

"This is a surprisingly big upward revision, given how conservative Nintendo is," Atul Goyal, an analyst at Jefferies, said in a note to clients. "In our view, these are still very conservative forecasts, leaving room for plenty more beat and raises."

Goyal is suggesting that even Nintendo's 14 million unit projection will come in under the real number. The company has had a steady drumbeat of big games being released since the console's launch. Press around the new games has largely been positive too, with Nintendo's most recent "Super Mario Odyssey" receiving a perfect score on some review sites, Goyal says.

Great games could drive more sales of the console, which could grow the size of the Switch userbase and attract more game developers, Goyal said. He predicts that Nintendo will see growing sales of the Switch for the next 3-5 years.

Goyal also predicted that beyond the Switch's lifetime, mobile will become one of Nintendo's most important platforms. Goyal previously said that mobile games could provide a platform of 1 billion users for Nintendo in the future. The company has been slowly improving its mobile games and has said it will continue focusing on the platform in the future.

Nintendo is up 75.12% this year.

13 details you might have missed in 'Stranger Things' season 2

The second season of "Stranger Things" is jam packed with references to various films and TV shows from the 1980s.

There are also some callbacks to the previous season and other little details you may not have picked up on during your bingefest.  Here's a look at everything you might have missed. WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD. Following is a transcript of the video.

Billy's character might look familiar. His look is identical to Billy in "St. Elmo's Fire."

Hopper's knock to Eleven is Morse Code for "us."

Sean Astin makes a subtle reference to "The Goonies," a 1985 film he starred in about lost pirate treasure.

Mikey: "You see One-Eyed Willie stole the treasure once. It was full of rubies, and emeralds, and ..."

Chunk: "Diamonds?"

Mikey: "Diamonds."

Bob Newbie: "What's at the X? Pirate treasure?"

Eleven's mom says "rainbow" and "sunflowers." Both of these are seen in Lucas' sister's bedroom.

There are lots of '80s culture nods at the Halloween party. Tom Cruise from "Risky Business." John Belushi from "Animal House." "Johnny" from "The Karate Kid." 1984 presidential candidate Ronald Reagan.

Paul Reiser's character first appears by a hospital bed, just like he does in the 1986 film "Aliens."

Dr. Owens asks Will what his favorite candy is. He replies, "Reese's Pieces." This candy was featured prominently in 1982's "E.T."

There's another subtle "Aliens" reference in Ep. 6.

Soldier: "Alright, stay frosty boys."

Hicks: "We're all in strung out shape. But stay frosty."

The Demodogs' attack might seem familiar. It's just like this raptor scene in "Jurassic Park."

Muldoon: "Clever girl."

This scene is identical to a classic 1977 sci-fi film. "Close Encounters of the Third Kind."

Eleven exits the Upside Down in a familiar spot. It's where the Demogorgon appeared in Season 1.

This scene appears to be a nod to "Poltergeist."

Eleven watches the '80s show "Punky Brewster." Punky is adopted, just like Eleven, and Punky's nightmare is about the doctor's office. This mirrors Eleven's past at Hawkins Lab.

Netflix confirms that 'House of Cards' will end with season 6, a day after star Kevin Spacey was accused of sexual misconduct

house of cards2

  • Season six of Netflix's "House of Cards" will be its last, Netflix confirmed.
  • The announcement came a day after its star Kevin Spacey was accused of sexual misconduct by actor Anthony Rapp.
  • Spacey apologized for his actions, and in the apology came out as gay. He has received heavy criticism for the form of his apology.

Netflix's first big original series, "House of Cards," is coming to an end.

Netflix confirmed to Business Insider that season six of the political drama will be its last. The season is set to air in 2018.

The series stars Kevin Spacey as Frank Underwood and Robin Wright as his wife, Claire Underwood. The drama debuted on Netflix in 2013 to critical acclaim, and was well-received by viewers. The show has also gotten nominations and wins at the Emmys and the Golden Globes, including wins for Spacey's chilling performance as a cutthroat politician. The show is often credited with establishing Netflix's ability to produce prestige dramas.

The conclusion of the show reportedly has nothing to do with Spacey, since the decision had been in the works since the summer, according to The Hollywood Reporter. But the announcement came a day after Spacey was accused of sexually assaulting actor Anthony Rapp in 1986, when Rapp was 14 years old. Following the accusation, Spacey wrote an apology that he posted on Twitter, in which he came out as gay, and said that he did "not remember the encounter," but that if it happened it "would have been deeply inappropriate, drunken behavior."

Spacey's apology has drawn widespread criticism, especially among the LGBTQ community.

Netflix gave the following statement Monday about the accusation against Spacey:

“Media Rights Capital and Netflix are deeply troubled by last night’s news concerning Kevin Spacey. In response to last night’s revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported. As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time.”

"House of Cards" creator and former showrunner Beau Willimon called the accusation against Spacey "deeply troubling," and said that he was unaware of any inappropriate behavior during his four seasons working on the show.

"House of Cards" is currently in production on the sixth and final season will air in 2018, with 13 episodes.
