15 Rich And Famous People Who Used To Be Homeless

Hilary Swank

In order to get to where they are today, some people really had to beat the odds — even if it meant living on the streets for awhile.

Some of these people weren't just poor — they were homeless.

They eventually turned their lives around and became an inspiration to anyone who dreams of a professional career despite starting from nothing.

Here are 15 inspiring stories of people who at some point in their lives had nowhere else to sleep but on the streets.

Oscar winner Halle Berry once stayed in a homeless shelter in her early twenties.

When she first moved to Chicago to become an actress, Berry ran out of money and her mother decided the best thing would not be to send her daughter money.

During these struggling times, the actress admits to staying in a homeless shelter.

In an interview with Star Pulse, the actress said:

"It taught me how to take care of myself and that I could live through any situation, even if it meant going to a shelter for a small stint, or living within my means, which were meager. I became a person who knows that I will always make my own way."

Chris Gardner inspired the movie "The Pursuit of Happyness" and was homeless with a young son while he was in a finance training program.

Aside from a movie based on his life starring Will Smith, Gardner also has two New York Times bestselling books under his belt: his autobiography "The Pursuit of Happyness" and "Start Where You Are: Life Lessons in Getting from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be."

But before his story was shared with the world, Gardner was living on the streets with his young son. At the time, he was trying to pursue a career in finance despite not having any experience in it, or even a college degree. He received a spot on the Dean Witter Reynolds training program, but couldn't afford to live off of the small salary, and his wife eventually left.

He is also a motivational speaker and CEO of Gardner Rich LLC with offices in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco.

According to his Web site, Gardner's childhood was "marked by poverty, domestic violence, alcoholism, sexual abuse and family illiteracy."

Hilary Swank grew up in a trailer park and lived in a car with her mother as a teenager.

Before she became an Oscar winner, Swank was a high school drop out and struggling actress.

When she was 15 years old, Swank and her mother left their home in Bellingham, Wash. and headed to California with "$75 and a Mobil card," reported Rebecca Leung at CBSNews.com.

After their arrival, the pair lived in a car for a couple of weeks.

Fortunately, Swank landed a role in her early twenties as Tina Brandon in the film "Boys Don't Cry" — a role she was paid $3,000 in total — which would eventually earn her an Academy Award for Best Actress.

until they are home

Upon hearing the news that music from his documentary had the potential to compete with Les Miserables and other 2012 blockbusters for best score and song in the Academy Awards, filmmaker Steven C. Barber changed around some plans.

Michael Cieply from the New York Times reported that while Barber (who works from a rent controlled apartment) was looking to buy a used Lexus, he immediately reallocated his funds to a $13,500 "For Your Consideration" ad in Variety when he found out he was shortlisted. (Cieply says he haggled the price down.)

The Las Vegas filmmaker is eligible for nomination for "Until They Are Home," a documentary about the process of repatriating remains of deceased American soldiers who died overseas. He'll find out if he got the actual nomination on Jan. 10.

"It was kind of like winning the lottery," Barber told Andrea Domanick at the Las Vegas Sun. He continued, “Nevada is a state of winners and losers, and today I feel like a winner."

Jack Dorsey was spotted on Sunday by paparazzi in St Barts.

The Square founder was on a luxury yacht with British model and acress, Lily Cole.

Cole played Greta in Snow White and the Huntsman.

Why do the paparazzi care about Jack Dorsey?

They don't, really. They were after Cole, who nearly lost her bikini top in the waves, and Dorsey happened to be in the photos. The Daily Mail, which ran the photo of Cole and Dorsey together, didn't even know who Dorsey was. It called him  Cole's "mystery man."

The Kernal recognized Dorsey and wondered if the pair was dating. But it's the only shot we've seen of them together, and they weren't alone on the yacht. The only other photo with Dorsey from Sunday was hands off.

Here's a screenshot, below. (Click to enlarge)

They have worked as pen salesmen, hawkers, cookie scoopers, ballet dancers, firefighters, professional soccer players, shoe salesmen, restaurant hostesses, lion cage tenders, lifeguards, mascots, bellhops and telemarketers. Think of any role and they have done it. These men and women have undertaken different jobs to stay afloat before becoming celebrities. (For related reading, see Winning Celebrities And The Companies They Endorse.)

TUTORIAL: Financial Careers

Some celebrities worked in finance before they became rich and famous. Some worked part-time jobs, while others worked full-time. Here are some of the notable ones.

Whoopi Goldberg is an American comedian, actress, singer-songwriter, political activist, author and a talk show host. She sustained herself while looking for acting jobs by working as a bank teller, a bricklayer and a cosmetologist at a mortuary.

Raymond Albert "Ray" Romano is an American actor, writer and stand-up comedian. He studied to become an accountant, and then worked as a bank teller where he met his wife Anna.

Red Foo, one half of the party rock band LMFAO, was tracking stocks as a kid under his father Barry Gordon's guidance. Before he made the room groove, he held a job as a day trader. He still invests, though his portfolio has become less risky. He believes that Apple's stock is a big winner.

Erin Isabelle Burnett is the anchor of CNN's "Erin Burnett OutFront." She was the co-anchor of CNBC's "Squawk On The Street" program and the host of CNBC's "Street Signs" program. Burnett began her career as a financial analyst for Goldman Sachs in investment banking. Her work included the areas of mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance. (To learn more, check out Biggest Merger And Acquisition Disasters.)

Timothy Maxwell"Max" Keiser is an American broadcaster and film-maker. He was the co-founder of the Hollywood Stock Exchange. He has worked in finance for about 25 years and started his career as a stock broker on Wall Street.

Method Actor
Shia Labeouf
isn't leaving his day job … yet. He got hooked on trading stocks while he worked on his movie "Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps." Preparing for his role at John Thomas Financial, he managed to turn his $20,000 to around $489,000, extending his midas touch from movies to finance.

Lou Dobbs is an American journalist, radio host, television host on the Fox Business Network and author. Dobbs worked as a cash-management specialist for Union Bank in Los Angeles after graduating from Harvard University.

Martha Stewart made her millions teaching us how to bake and decorate homes better. She started her career as a stock broker in New York.

The iconic Colonel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) worked as an insurance salesman before his famed career as founder of KFC.

It is difficult to imagine Demi Moore the star of "Indecent Proposal," "GI Jane" and "Striptease" as an employee in a debt collection agency, but she did.

Moving up the Ladder
Former CEO of Hewlett-Packard, Carly Fiorina, started out as a secretary and then moved into a broker position at Marcus & Millichap Real Estate Investment Services, a commercial real estate brokerage firm.

Brett Ratner, director of the "Rush Hour" movies, worked as a stockbroker at South Richmond Securities on Wall Street.

Prime Minister John Key of New Zealand worked as a foreign exchange dealer at Elders Finance in Wellington, before rising to be head foreign exchange trader in two short years. He has also served as Merrill Lynch's head of foreign exchange. He chose to jump from the high volatility of the world of finance to the more volatile field of politics.

Former British Prime Minister Sir John Major took a correspondence course in banking after being passed over for a bus conductor's job. He joined as a junior executive at Standard Chartered Bank before moving up the ladder.

Rick Yune the handsome, chilling villain from "Die Another Day" was not new to taking risks, having been a hedge fund trader post graduating from Wharton Business School. At the age of 21, he joined as a trainee at a hedge fund. When it was relatively difficult for a newbie to land a role in a hedge fund, he found it "humbling" to be entrusted with so much responsibility. He also enjoyed the role for its risk and not knowing what to expect next. He, however, was more attracted to the calling of acting.

Michael Roiff, the independent film producer, initially started his career in the world of finance. He briefly worked as a management consultant at CIBC World Markets and The Parthenon Group before he set off to produce his first film "Waitress" in 2007.

The Bottom Line
Before the big bucks and glamour, these celebrities worked at regular white collar jobs, like a lot of us. They were ready to work many jobs to land the one they loved. You never know when the spotlight will shine on you! (For additional reading, check out Celebrities You Can Bank On.)

The Worst Gaming Advertising Of 2012

ps vita double breasts ad france

There’s no such thing as bad press. It’s a cliché, and — even worse than that — it’s not even true.

If you want evidence that the public spotlight is a bad thing on occasion, you should acquaint yourself with the story of Ocean Marketing.

As our article points out, an angry customer asked someone mildly famous to publicize a few emails he exchanged with the owner of Ocean Marketing, and it destroyed the company.

Or how about this advertisement Sony ran for the PlayStation Portable, where a white woman is holding a black woman by the throat with the caption, “White is coming”?

Yeah, that was ill-conceived.

Now that it’s the end of the year, we are gonna take a few minutes to reflect on the terrible examples of game-related advertising, marketing, and public relations in 2012.

1. Sony says the PlayStation Vita is like a woman with two extra breasts on her back

Oh, Sony, you poor darling. You don’t know what is edgy, what is offensive, and what is just damned stupid.

Let’s recap: Sony — or its marketing partners — ran an ad in a French magazine that had a picture of a woman from the neck down with two large breasts on her chest and two more on her back.

The caption on the ad, in French, reads, “Twice the touch screens, twice the sensation.” The idea is that since the PS Vita has a touch screen on the front and the back, it’s as much fun as a deformed lady with growths on her shoulder blades.

Where to begin?

Let’s ignore that this offensively compares a woman’s body to a piece of consumer electronics. Let’s ignore the juvenile stance on the touching of boobies. Let’s ignore that touch screens actually aren’t nearly as fun as this comparison suggests. But I can’t ignore that this advert promotes the idea that a woman’s back is somehow boring because it lacks bosoms.

I’ve been to France. The women in that country have just as nice backs as anywhere else. I would suggest that if you feel like a woman’s back is useless because it doesn’t have breasts, then you have a bigger problem than deciding whether or not to buy a new gaming device.

2. Most things related to promoting Hitman: Absolution

Edgy gone wrong describes everything about Hitman.

Publisher Square Enix started off the marketing campaign for its assassination title with a trailer showing the titular hitman punching a cadre of “naughty nuns” in the face. A loud chorus of confused fans wondered why the publisher would glorify sexualized violence.

When I watch the video, the parts of my brain that react to “sexy nuns” and the parts that react to bloody noses don’t intermingle in the slightest, but I also wouldn’t use the punching of women in lingerie as a main selling point for a game.

Then, earlier this month, Square Enix unveiled a new marketing website for Hitman: Absolution that invited fans to put make-believe hits out on their friends on Facebook.

The fake hitman would ask for a distinguishing feature of the “target” and would present the user with a drop-down menu that included things like “her hairy legs,” “her small tits,” and “his tiny penis.”

Since you could only send the messages to your confirmed friends on Facebook, this might not offend everybody. But the marketing team was obviously going for shock value, and it did shock people. Square Enix removed the website hours after introducing it.

3. “Have you heard about my Kickstarter?”

A big part of marketing involves PR people pitching products to the press. They try to get the media to cover the product in an attempt to create excitement.

This means we get a lot of emails about boring stuff that no one wants to read about — and nothing epitomizes that kind of email like the “Hey, have you heard about our Kickstarter?” press release.

I am all for Kickstarter. I think it’s a viable alternative to the established publisher system, but it’s not good for Kickstarter when my main interaction with it is to groan while I archive an email that pretends like a developer asking for money is news.

Now, I wouldn’t include this on a list of terrible marketing ideas if the problem only affected my inbox. Internet forums like Reddit and NeoGAF have established rules against “Kickstarter reminder posts.”

That’s because developers bombard everywhere they can think of when they have a campaign. It’s understandable to a degree. They’re trying to fund their work, but annoying people isn’t going to help.

The problem is that when Kickstarter first hit the big time, the concept itself was news. That’s not true anymore. Now, if developers want to grab attention for their crowd-funding campaigns, they need a deeper hook than the fact that they’re asking for money.

4. The War Z debacle

As much effort as publishers and developers put into marketing their games before they release them, it doesn’t matter if something goes wrong when the game launches.

Or in the case of developer Hammerpoint Interactive’s The War Z, if everything goes wrong when the game launches.

GamesBeat extensively covered this catastrophe, but let’s recap the major events:

When the studio released the open-world zombie game on Valve’s Steam digital-distribution service, its store page noted a handful of features that simply weren’t in the game. When irate players began to demand refunds, Hammerpoint said it couldn’t do anything to help them.

This only enraged gamers further. Those customers raised hell until Valve could only respond by removing the game from its store and granting refunds to anyone who wanted them.

Now, the developer is deep in a public-relations hole that will be nearly impossible to climb out of when it’s time to re-release the game.

5. Most in-game ads on mobile

Free is dope.

I love not paying for games on my phone. It means I can try out a bunch of different titles without wasting my very limited funds, but I also understand that developers need to make money.

The most common monetization solution for mobile studios is to implement in-game advertising. Many developers have generated a great deal of revenue using these ads, so it works — but it’s usually done terribly from the player’s perspective.

Let’s take the very last game that I played on my phone before I got out of bed this morning: Family Feud.

I didn’t pay for the adaptation of the long-running television game show. In between each full play session, the game halts and throws up an empty screen while it loads an ad. When the ad finally appears, it is invariably oriented incorrectly. If I have the phone in landscape mode, the ad loads vertically, and vice versa.

These commercials are also ugly as Web 1.0. The advertising people don’t put a lot of effort into designing ad spots for mobile devices. Instead, they just repurpose banners built for websites and slap those into places they don’t really belong.

You end up with an ugly and confusing mess that interrupts gameplay, and then, you’re lucky if the “skip ad” button works the first 20 times that you tap it.

No one has really figured out how to do in-games ad well. Some of the Angry Birds titles place a small ad unit over a portion of the screen during gameplay, which naturally leads to users inadvertently clicking the ad. That’s good for the developer, but it’s annoying for the gamer and costly to the advertiser.

Maybe this issue doesn’t have a neat solution, but it would be nice to see developers and advertisers working together a bit harder to improve the user experience.

How Rent The Runway Helped 20-Year-Old American Beauty, Olivia Culpo, Get Crowned Miss Universe

Two years ago, Olivia Culpo had never entered a beauty pageant. Today, she is Miss Universe, the first American to win in fifteen years.

But she might not have made it there without the help of a New York startup, Rent The Runway.

Rent The Runway is a designer shop that lets users rent dresses for a few days instead of buying them outright. It recently raised $20 million from a number of investors including magazine giant, Conde Nast.

The 20-year-old is a Boston University sophomore studying acting. She figured beauty pageants could help her with stage presence, so she entered her home-state Miss Rhode Island competition. It was her first pageant ever.

As such, Culpo found herself a under prepared and had to battle a series of unfortunate events to nab the Miss USA crown.

She tells Glamour she slept past her alarm on the morning of, she found chocolate melted onto the backside of her tight, white interview dress.

In addition, she hadn't gone shopping for an evening gown.

"I ended up getting my dress the night before," she tells Us Weekly. "It was a $20 Rent-the-Runway gown that was too short [and had] a hole in the back of it."

Still, Culpo dazzled the judges and took home the Miss Rhode Island crown, which qualified her for the Miss USA crown. Then she won over the world.

Here's the shot in her Miss Rhode Island-winning Rent The Runway dress, from September 2011:

Larry Ellison's Movie-Mogul Kids May Be Working On A New 'Terminator' Movie

$

Megan EllisonYou may not have heard the last of John Connor, if Larry Ellison's son and daughter have anything to say about it.

And they do.

Megan and David Ellison own the rights to the "Terminator" franchise and may be working together on a new movie, reports SFist's Jay Barmann.

Megan Ellison had won a bidding war for the the Terminator franchise back in May 2011, Deadline's Mike Flemming Jr. reported at the time. The rights included agreements with Justin Lin to direct and Arnold Schwarzenegger to star. So far, there's been no real progress on the movie but Megan just signed brother David on to be a coproducer.

They had better a get a move on, because in 2019, the Terminator series turns 35, and at that time the rights may automatically revert back to series creator James Cameron, Flemming reports.

Connor is, of course, the main hero, played by a variety of actors through the films. He leads the human Resistance forces against their cyborg overlords run by the evil Skynet. These include the hard-to-kill cyborgs known as Terminators, famously played by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Both the Ellison kids have made names for themselves as Hollywood producers. According to the New York Times, Megan "got access to much larger sums from her father" last year, while David raised $350 million and borrowed more for his own production company.

But this is Megan's year to shine.

She was a major source of funding for two of this year's Oscar contenders, "The Master" and "Zero Dark Thirty," via her movie production company Annapurna Productions, earning her the nickname "The Indie Saver,"

She's also reportedly cooking up a movie about WikiLeaks, too.

the lord of the rings the two towers

It may not be a big day to open films, like Christmas; however, there are 11 films which have managed to make north of $10 million on New Year's Day.

We've taken a look at the biggest box-office films to open the New Year.

Unsurprisingly, the largest-earning films occur when the holiday falls on a Friday or Saturday.

Though New Year's falls in the beginning of the week this year, we're sure Les Mis," "The Hobbit," or "Django Unchained" will have no problem getting on this list.

11. "Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol" (2011): $10 million

Tom Cruise's latest "Mission Impossible" film is his highest-earning film to date with nearly $700 million worldwide at theaters.

10. "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" (2001): $10.2 million

The first in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy spiked back up to double-digit earnings New Year's day 2002 before dropping six million at theaters the following day.

9. "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" (2002) : $11 million

The sequel to the "Fellowship" saw a similar New Year's trend as the last film. The film took a drop in theater openings after the first of January.

rob lowe casey anthony movie

The Casey Anthony trial gripped national attention in the summer of 2011, as a young Florida mother faced accusations she murdered her daughter so she could party more.

Two-year-old Caylee Anthony's remains were found in 2008 in a wooded area near her grandparents' house, ABC News reported at the time.

Casey Anthony was charged with first-degree murder in the girl's death but always maintained her innocence and was acquitted in July 2011.

Now Lifetime is tackling the trial that's been called the biggest case since O.J. Simpson.

Premiering Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. EST, Prosecuting Casey Anthony will take a look at the case through the prosecutor's eyes.

The movie is based on prosecutor Jeff Ashton's book about the case and "reveals Ashton’s inside story of the true crime drama that captivated and then shocked the nation," according to a press release from A&E Networks.

This isn't Lifetime's first stab at reexamining a dramatic crime. The network also chronicled the Drew Peterson case in its movie Drew Peterson: Untouchable.

Peterson was found guilty in September of murdering his third wife Kathleen Savio.

To check out the network's interpretation of the Anthony case, tune in to Lifetime in a few weeks.

The movie details the prosecution of Casey Anthony, who was on trial for the murder of her daughter Caylee. The movie is told from prosecutor Jeff Ashton's point of view.

Actress Virginia Welch plays Casey Anthony, who was acquitted of first-degree murder in June 2011. Anthony was found guilty of four misdemeanor counts of lying to police, however.

After her trial, the real Casey Anthony went into hiding. She's currently being sued by Zenaida Gonzalez, who claims Anthony defamed her when Anthony blamed Caylee's disappearance on a woman with the same name. Anthony is also currently appealing her misdemeanor convictions.

Here's Everything We Know About The Super Bowl Ad Lineup So Far

$
0
0

Tim Tebow didn't want picture with Kate Upton, Chrissy Teigen

As the countdown begins for Super Bowl XLVII, it's time to focus on one of the most important parts of the game: The ads.

We might not know what teams are playing yet, but this is one of the most watched television events in the world, so there's already a pretty solid advertiser lineup.

These are the companies that shelled out $3.8 million for each 30-second time slot that will play to 111 million people.

From Kate Upton for Mercedes to Skechers famous French bull Mr. Quiggly, here's what you have to look forward to:

Anheuser-Busch InBev:

The Budweiser parent company has a lot planned as the Super Bowl's exclusive beer advertiser. In fact, hip hop legend Jay-Z will appear in a spot that he actually did some of the creative work on for Black Crown. This isn't a huge surprise considering that A-B dumped McGarry Bowen on its Bud Light accounts in favor of Translation, which is run by Jay-Z's friend Steve Stoute. Last year, Anheuser-Busch InBev had four minutes and thirty seconds worth of ads.

Audi of America (VW):

All we know so far is that Audi bought a 60-second commercial that will be made by agency Venables, Bell and Partners. The shop was also responsible for the car company's vampire-inspired spot last year. After the vampires were killed by the S7's LED headlights, the ad ended with the hashtag #SoLongVampires. So expect a social component this year, too.

Axe (Unilever):

Axe is another newcomer to the Super Bowl this year. BBH London will create a 30-second spot in a TBD quarter. Although Axe has relied heavily on risqueé ads in which women jump men after one spritz of body spray, it has recently produced more complex work. It got attention for a spot in which Keifer Sutherland laments the one that got away. The press release reminds fans to follow Axe on Facebook and Twitter for more updates.

Best Buy:

In Super Bowls past, Best Buy has used big-name celebrities like Ozzie Osbourne and Justin Bieber, and tech innovators like Instagram's Kevin Systrom, so it's hard to know what's in store for us this year. One thing we do know is that the 30-second spot will be created by Crispin Porter + Bogusky.

Cars.com-super-bowl-adCars.com:

When a second head protruded out of a customer's neck and starting singing a song in last year's Super Bowl ad, some viewers were confused and disturbed. Cars.com might take a different route in this year's 30-second spot. The advertiser dumped DDB in May, so McGarryBowen will take the lead on the commercial.

Century 21:

The real estate company will be returning to the Super Bowl for a second time with a 30-second spot that will premiere in the game's third quarter, shortly after the half time show. According to Century 21, the Red Tettemer and Partners' created spot will be "telling the story of the brand’s greatest asset, our agents!"

Coca-Cola:

The Super Bowl veteran bought three 30-second spots that will air throughout the game. Although the company's interactive polar bear ad campaign was successful in 2012, and helped grow Coke's Twitter following by 38 percent during the four-hour game, according to the Examiner, "Coca-Cola has killed off the bears from their three new 30-second commercials. Nobody tell the global warmists." Wieden + Kennedy will do the creative.

Doritos (PepsiCo):

This is the seventh consecutive time that Doritos asked fans to create their own Super Bowl ad in its "Crash the Super Bowl" contest. The winner, which will be determined by USA Today's Ad Meter poll, will be able to work with Michael Bay on the next "Transformers" movie. According to Ad Age, Goodby Silverstein and Partners also helps out with the process.

Ford's Lincoln:

Lincoln bought its first-ever Super Bowl spot this year and created its very own WPP agency (called HudsonRouge) to go along with it. The 60-second spot has been teased as "very social." So social, in fact, that the car company is asking fans to write the script of the spot via Twitter.

Fiat Abarth CommercialFiat (Chrysler):

Chrysler marketing chief Olivier Francois release five overtly sexual Fiat ads that he said could be worked into its 30-second Super Bowl spot. Options include an ad of women changing in the back of a car, people making out, and supermodel Catrinel Menghia (who starred in its "Seduction" Super Bowl spot in 2012) in a bikini with a scorpion crawling on her back. The tag line: "Small, wicked... and now topless." The Richards Group developed last year's spot.

Gildan's Activewear:

The clothing company announced its plans for its first-ever Super Bowl spot in October. DeVito/Verdi is making the 30-second, third quarter spot. The New York Times reports, "Gildan will try that are a pair of initiatives on Facebook, including one that will let people insert photos of themselves or their friends in a scene of the commercial, paid search ads, banner ads and preroll ads that appear before online videos."

Go Daddy:

Headline-loving Go Daddy has been very vocal about its Super Bowl process. First it was publicly waffling over whether or not it would keep onDeutsch NY as its agency (in an effort to clean up its salacious reputation, the dot com is using an agency for its Super Bowl spot). Then it was teasing whether or not Go Daddy Girl Danica Patrick has a place in its new ad (she does). Go Daddy bought two 30-second spots.

Hyundai:

The day after GM officially announced that it would be steering clear of the Super Bowl, Hyundai released a statement that it wouldn't miss the event. The company's internal shop Innocean will create the spot(s).

Kia (Hyundai):

Kia's buying a Super Bowl spot for its fourth year in a row. David & Goliath created past Super Bowl ads, including last year's which starred Adriana Lima.

m&m super bowl ad moneyM&M's (Mars):

After M&M's successfully debuted Ms. Brown in its first-ever Super Bowl spot last year, the company knew it had to go for another round in 2013. "We're excited to be back on the world's biggest stage," said Roy Benin, Chief Consumer Officer, Mars Chocolate North America. "The introduction of Ms. Brown will be a tough act to follow, so we're planning to tap our colorful characters, as well as our irresistible chocolate to infuse some fun into the Super Bowl." The first quarter, 30-second spot will be created by BBDO.

Mercedes-Benz:

The luxury car brand is returning to the Super Bowl with an ad starring Kate Upton and Usher. A photo has already been released of Upton looking glamorous on set. Even though the model is known for her bikini-body, Mercedes CEO Steve Cannon told BI that she will not be used as a sex object in the spot. Merkley Partners made the fourth quarter spot.

Oreo (Mondelez International):

When Mondelez International was created to take over the snack division at Kraft, the company decided to shake things up agency and strategy-wise. Thus, Oreo is having its first-ever Super Bowl ad this year. Even though DraftFCB did impressive work for Oreo's 100th anniversary this year, Oreo gave the task of creating its 30-second, first quarter spot to Wieden + Kennedy. DraftFCB will regain some AOR duties after the game.

PepsiCo Beverages:

On top of its sponsored half time show, starring Beyonce, Pepsi will unveil new commercials for its main soda and Pepsi Max. Beyonce is expected to star in a commercial as wellTBWA/Chiat/Day has made its Super Bowl ads in the past.

Samsung:

Samsung is presumably back to its Apple-bashing ways with a spot in this year's Super Bowl. While we don't know specifics, 72andSunny has been doing brilliant creative for the company and was responsible for last year's 90-second sensation. Let's just hope this spot isn't about parents sexting.

Sketchers DogSkechers:

Even though Skechers' Super Bowl spot last year provoked outrage from animal rights activists for glorifying "cruel" greyhound racing, it looks like the shoe company is back in the game with its adorable star: a French Bull named Mr. Quiggly. The dog, which replaced Kim Kardashian, helped catapult last year's ad to a viral success, so Skechers president Michael Greenberg made sure it was known that "we already have Mr. Quiggly booked and back in training for his triumphant return. We’re aiming for the No. 1 Super Bowl commercial this time.”

SodaStream International:

This Israeli company that turns water into seltzer with the touch of a button caught the world's attention when the UK banned its ad for being too mean to its soda competitors. Of course, that made the spot — which shows Coke cans exploding whenever the SodaStream button is pushed — go viral. The original spot, created by Common and ad legend Alex Bogusky (who notoriously hates Coca Cola), will be revamped for a 30-second Super Bowl spot in the fourth quarter, alongside its Coke and Pepsi competitors. According to Ad Age, however, "the agency and Mr. Bogusky are not involved in reworking it."

Volkswagen:

We don't know how long it's going to be, what model it's for, or what quarter it's going to be in, but Volkswagen will definitely be buying a Super Bowl spot. Oh, and when Business Insider visited Deutsch LA's office in November, the creatives let us in on another absolute: after last year's viral success with both comically obese and musically talented dogs, this year will officially be pooch-free. While other members of the animal kingdom are fair game, we're guessing that this will be VW's year of the celebrity.

The 24 Worst Celebrity Air Rage Incidents

Alec Baldwin

Celebrities are just like the rest of us, even when they travel, right?

After all, nobody likes the hassles of the airport: taking off your shoes, figuring out the latest baggage rules, or shooing away the paparazzi when you’re just trying to buy a magazine or some M&Ms before your flight.

Okay, so perhaps celebrities have it worse — in some ways — when negotiating their way through air travel.

On the other hand, famous folks also have a colorful track record of freaking out both in airports and while cruising at 30,000 feet.

See the shocking incidents >

Countless news reports detail some celebrity air rage incidents that many of us can relate to: Naomi Campbell went ballistic when her luggage got lost. And Clay Aiken got into a “dispute” with a fellow traveler when his in-flight nap invaded her personal space.

Other incidents get a little more extreme. Actor Alec Baldwin infamously lost his patience — slamming the bathroom door, pounding on the wall, cursing — when asked to quit playing Words With Friends on his phone. Icelandic singer Björk lashed out at a reporter in a Thai airport just for welcoming her to the country. And a near riot took place at London’s Heathrow after Snoop Dogg and some of his entourage were asked to leave a business-class lounge — and almost took down a duty-free shop with them.

The term “air rage” can be applied to anything from smoking onboard a plane to assaulting the flight crew. Andrew Thomas, a professor of international business at University of Akron, founder of Air Rage.org, and author of the book Air Rage: Crisis in the Skies, says that famous people have a higher likelihood of air rage, in large part because they tend to sit closer to the cockpit.

“There is an entitlement factor that goes with folks in the front of the plane, and I would extend that to celebrities as well,” he says. “There is a disproportionate number of air rage incidents that take place in business class — people who are not always used to the answer ‘no.’ ”

The FAA and Department of Homeland Security both monitor air rage incidents on U.S. flights, but they don’t strictly track it on all levels. Security breaches, meanwhile, are reported to the Department of Homeland Security. Technically, the FBI has jurisdiction over airspace, which is why anyone who breaks the rules by “interfering with the flight crew” will often be met by an FBI agent, rather than airport or local police, for questioning upon landing.

An Air Transport Association spokesman says that the airline industry group doesn’t track air rage at all, but that, “anecdotally, the number of unruly incidents, relative to the total number of travelers, is minuscule. Flight attendants do an excellent and commendable job at diffusing the potential for rage onboard.”

Interestingly enough, a striking number of celebrity air rage incidents involve London’s Heathrow Airport. Thomas speculates that the Heathrow problem stems from the fact that it’s the most-traveled international hub — and, perhaps, because of its easy access to the main trigger of in-flight rage: booze. “They really push the duty-free stuff at Heathrow,” he says, “so a lot of people buy their own stuff and carry it on the plane.”

But, for PR reasons, airlines don’t report the vast majority of incidents, unless there’s an extreme case requiring legal action. “The airlines’ unstated policy,” Thomas says, “is to get this passenger the hell out of here — and then let it go.”

More From Travel + Leisure:

Susan Boyle

British singing sensation Susan Boyle startled passengers in a VIP lounge at London’s Heathrow Airport with erratic behavior, shouting curse words and singing into a mop.

One witness told the Sun: “She was singing and dancing around, shouting obscenities at full volume.” However, another onlooker told IrishCentral.com that the story was blown out of context. According to that witness, someone asked Boyle to sing and she complied.

But when an irritated flier made a snide comment, she grabbed hold of the mop saying she could sing if she wanted and added, “Oh, excuse me, sir, let me shine your shoes” and used the mop to shine his shoes.

Consequences: A British Airways official stayed with Boyle in a corridor until she boarded the Chicago-bound flight (Boyle was to appear on Oprah in January 2010). British Airways later released a statement: “A customer in the BA lounge on Tuesday was asked to temper their behavior as it was becoming disruptive.”

Billie Joe Armstrong

In September 2011, just before takeoff from San Francisco International Airport, a Southwest Airlines flight attendant asked the Green Day lead singer to pull up his low-sagging pants. According to reports, Armstrong replied: “Don’t you have better things to do than worry about that?” After repeated requests, he became very angry. The flight attendant said, “Pull your pants up or you’re getting off the plane.”

Consequences: Armstrong and his traveling companion were thrown off the Burbank-bound flight. He then Tweeted, “Just got kicked off a southwest flight because my pants sagged too low!” The airline apologized and put him on the next flight out.

Wes Scantlin

“When a grown man cannot purchase a beer on a five-hour flight from Boston to LA, then the airlines are completely losing their minds,” Puddle of Mud lead singer Wes Scantlin told TMZ.

He insisted that he was completely sober and had only wanted to purchase a beer after a two-hour nap on a JetBlue flight he took in September 2012. Officials, however, claim that the rocker was so drunkenly combative and argumentative that his unruly behavior created a public disturbance. When he was denied the drink, Scantlin and a flight attendant got into a verbal altercation and caused the plane to make an emergency landing in Austin, TX.

Consequences: Scantlin was booted off the flight, arrested, and charged with public intoxication. The other passengers each received a letter of apology and a $50 voucher for being grounded for more than an hour in Austin. However, the judge since dropped the charges due to insufficient evidence.

Beautiful New Film Follows The 40-Year Search For The Monarch Butterfly's Winter Home

Flight of the Butterflies

Flight of the Butterflies, opening in New York at The American Museum of Natural History on Jan. 5 lets you take a journey with monarch butterflies during their annual migration. Theirs is the longest insect migration, which spans thousands of miles and several generations and took 40 years to uncover.

Director Mike Slee co-wrote the script with co-executive producer Wendy MacKeigen to reenact the discovery of a lifetime. They received help from the world's top monarch butterfly experts and major funding from the National Science Foundation.

"...This new film allows the audience to experience the natural world of butterflies as never before — in metamorphosis inside a chrysalis, in flight a mile high, migrating over great distances, and in tree-laden monarch sanctuaries," said executive producer Jonathan Barker, the CEO of SK Films in a press release. "In 'Flight of the Butterflies,' we are able to utilize the spectacular giant screen technology to follow an even more fascinating creature — the fragile yet tenacious monarch — and bring to life the compelling detective story and heroic efforts by an intrepid scientist and real individuals to solve a scientific mystery."

An IMAX experience

I was invited to see the movie on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 in IMAX 3D in New York. You have to see this movie to believe it: The film was absolutely stunning and the 3D on the IMAX screen made me feel I was there surrounded by butterflies, flying a mile high on the way from Canada to Mexico. There was such an incredible number of butterflies in some scenes that it was hard to believe none of the butterflies are computer generated.

The only computer graphics in the movie was the amazing animation looking into the chrysalis, the hard outer protective layer in which the caterpillar transforms into a butterfly (colloquially known as a cocoon, though those are technically only for species of moths). Researchers used special scans to see how the caterpillar changes, including growing wings, long legs, and its organs changing in order to become a butterfly, then computer animated this portion of the film.

The butterfly sanctuary in Mexico where the monarch butterflies spend their winter is a truly unbelievable sight. So many monarchs cover the trees, that they appear to be part of them.

The Story

This docudrama follows the 40 years that Fred Urqhart and his wife Norah Urqhart spent searching for the winter home of the Monarch butterfly.

With the help of thousands of volunteers they tagged butterflies from Canada, America, and Mexico. It was two volunteers in Mexico, Ken Brugger and Catalina Aquado, who discovered the monarch's winter home in 1976: A butterfly sanctuary in the 10,000-feet-high Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico.

Flight of the Butterflies When Nora and Fred visited the sanctuary they find a monarch, PS397, which was tagged by two school boys and their teacher in Minnesota, 2,000 miles away, four months before.

National Geographic featured the discovery of the Mexican sanctuary in their August 1976 issue with a picture of Catalina Aquado surrounded by butterflies on and around her on the front cover. In the movie actress Stephanie Sigman recreates that scene.

Monarchs now

Thanks to the movie the butterfly sanctuary was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. But, the World Wildlife Fund reports that the butterfly population in the sanctuary has dropped one third since 2011 due to illegal logging, industrial farming, and climate change.

The monarchs are now classified as near threatened. A significant amount of the box office revenue will go towards protecting the butterfly sanctuary.

Watch the trailer and a "teaser" below for a glimpse of just how spectacular the monarchs' migration and sanctuary are:

The Republicans Are Now Blocking A Gigantic Tax Cut

John Boehner

Taxes increased for almost all Americans at midnight last night.

Since then, half of the American government, the Senate, approved a bill that would cut taxes for many of those Americans.

The bill has been sent to the other half of the American government, the House of Representatives, so it can be signed into law.

But Republicans in the House of Representatives are disgruntled about the Fiscal Cliff bill the Senate approved and are threatening not to approve it.

The Senate bill calls for massive tax cuts for most Americans, including the investor and owner class (dividend taxes will be much lower under the Senate bill than they are under the law that took effect last night).

This puts the Republicans in an odd position, considering that the party's primary mission is to cut taxes:

Taxes have already gone up.

So the Republicans are now the only thing standing between America and a gigantic tax cut.

Weight Watchers Hedged Jessica Simpson's Pregnancy By Filming 2 Slightly Different Ads

jessica simpson

For Weight Watchers, Jan. 1 is the Super Bowl -- the most important advertising time of the year. People use their New Year's resolutions to lose weight and this is the prime new customer sign-up season.

The first ad on NBC after the ball-drop in Times Square on New Year's Eve? Simpson for Weight Watchers. That was just a slice of the massive media budget that Weight Watchers has running right now.

Jessica Simpson, however, threw a wrench into her $4 million endorsement deal with Weight Watchers on Dec. 30 when she tweeted this picture of her pregnant baby bump. "Bumpin' and proud," she told her followers.

It's not that there's anything wrong with being pregnant. It's just that Weight Watchers is about getting lighter and smaller, and the company has invested significantly in that idea with her as its star. But Simpson won't be doing that anytime soon. Weight Watchers was undoubtedly hoping to show ads showing Simpson becoming progressively more svelte on its regimen. Scrub that.

It's just the latest bump in the road for the Simpson-Weight Watchers pact.

Back in September, Simpson caused controversy for the brand when she filmed an ad that only showed her from the neck up.

Fair enough.

The ad was filmed in the summer, just months after she gave birth to her first daughter. She was poised to show how Weight Watchers might help her lose the post-baby weight.

Jessica SimpsonBut then came her New Year campaign. If you were watching Rockin' New Year's Eve you may have seen it immediately after the stroke of midnight. There's Simpson, hiding her body behind a truck, a loose unbuttoned plaid shirt, and a giant brass belt buckle.

She claims she lost 50 pounds.

Now she's pregnant again, and Weight Watchers was forced to change course. Worse, Simpson won't be following the Weight Watchers' diet while she's endorsing the brand.

So the company used a remarkably subtle tactic to handle the news. It filmed two almost identical ads. In one, Simpson announces she's pregnant. In the other, she only talks about how she lost 50 pounds on Weight Watchers after her first kid. Unless you're listening very closely, you can't tell the difference between them. See them both below.

Kardashian

It's often very hard to tell how tall a celebrity is just from seeing them on the big screen or TV.

So it shouldn't be surprising that some celebs are much shorter than they appear.

Kim and Kourtney Kardashian barely break the five foot mark even with heels.

They aren't the only A-listers on the short list.

Daniel Radcliffe is among the shortest of the "Harry Potter" group at 5’5."

Dustin Hoffman barely towers over his wife Lisa Gottsege at 5'5."

Woody Allen's leading ladies tower over his 5'5" stature.

Photographer Killed While Trying To Snap Pictures Of Justin Bieber

A paparazzo was killed by oncoming traffic Tuesday after he tried to snap pictures of Justin Bieber on a highway off-ramp.

The unnamed photographer, who saw the pop star's Ferrari parked on the off-ramp, left his car to take pictures and was hit by oncoming traffic as he tried to return to his vehicle, CNN reported Wednesday morning.

He later died at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center

“He was just a kid. People misunderstand what’s going on here,” a friend of the photographer told KTLA 5. “He was just like any of you guys — a reporter. Maybe it was a different field. He was specializing in celebrity news because that’s where he thought the money is.”

Bieber wasn't actually in the car at the time of the incident.

However, the pop star did release a statement saying his thoughts and prayers were with the photographer's family.

"Hopefully this tragedy will finally inspire meaningful legislation and whatever other necessary steps to protect the lives and safety of celebrities, police officers, innocent public bystanders, and the photographers themselves," Bieber said in a statement, according to CNN.

Unfortunately, Tuesday's incident wasn't necessarily a surprise for Los Angeles City Councilman Dennis Zine, who worried in July the paparazzi's pursuit of celebrities would end in disaster.

This summer a pack of paparazzi caused mayhem on the a California freeway while they chased Bieber's car down the road.

"He [a paparazzo] was coming up behind me, making abrupt lane changes, not giving signals, cutting off cars," Zine told CNN at the time. The photographers were driving "at a rapid speed, all of them."

Paul Raef, one of the photographers, was prosecuted under a California law that allows for additional penalties for paparazzi who drive recklessly in pursuit of celebrities, according to CNN.

However, a judge said the statute was too broad and dismissed the anti-paparazzi counts filed against the photographer, The Associated Press reported in September.
