The first major blockbuster of the year is here, folks!
Disney's "John Carter" comes out this Friday and most people know absolutely nothing about it.
The film comes from the mind of author Edgar Rice Burroughs, who wrote the 11-volume tale of a dying Mars and John Carter—the earthling brought to the planet to save all who inhabit it.
Disney shelled out $250 million big ones for the production helmed by Pixar director Andrew Stanton, who previously directed "Finding Nemo" and "Wall-E."
That's a lot of dough and pressure to throw on someone who's directing a live-action film for the first time and Taylor Kitsch, whose most starring role to date is as a small town football player on the acclaimed "Friday Night Lights."
With marketing confusion surrounding the movie's title to rumors that the film went over budget, "John Carter" might become 2012's first big-budget box office bomb.
But considering the intriguing trailer and the impressive, just-released 10-minute scene from the movie, we certainly hope the film ends up a success.
So while we wait for the results, let's take a look at some of the biggest box office bombs of the last 30 years.
"Battlefield Earth" (2000)
Scientology's experiment with Hollywood starring John Travolta was not only a terrible movie but had an embarrassing result.
The alien invasion film eventually made under $30 million and won an astonishing nine Razzies total including ones for Worst Picture and Worst Actor for Travolta.
Total Production Cost: $73,000,000
Worldwide Gross: $29,725,663
Total Loss: 70.59%
"Soldier" (1998)
This Kurt Russell vehicle about a soldier who must learn human feelings and save the world was a terribly entry in the science fiction genre.
Director Paul W.S. Anderson would fare much better commercially four years later with "Resident Evil" but this film was a big box office and critical bomb.
Total Production Cost: $60,000,000
Worldwide Gross: $14,594,226
Total Cost: 75.68%
"The Alamo" (2004)
Remember the Alamo?
Well no one remembered to go to this movie about the historic fight at the Alamo anyway.
Even stars like Billy Bob Thorton and "The Lost Boys" heartthrob Jason Patric couldn't save this giant flop.
Total Production Cost: $107,000,000
Worldwide Gross: $25,820,000
Total Loss: 75.87%
