People shelled out the big bucks for a piece of Academy Award history.
Nate Sanders' Oscar collection sold for a record breaking amount last night. The 15 Academy awards brought in a total of $3,060,089 following Oscar Sunday.
Herman Mankiewicz's 1941 Best Screenplay Oscar for "Citizen Kane" topped the selling list at $588,455. At the end of last week, the same statuette saw the highest bid at $142,042.
Despite the record-breaking sale, none of the individual bids topped Sanders' individual December 2011 sale for Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane" Academy Award which went for $861,542.
Don't feel too bad if you missed out on your chance at Oscar gold. The cheapest award, a 1937 Oscar tablet, sold for $72,295.
Sanders expected to bring in about $2 million for the statuettes, and credited the high sales to wanting a piece of Oscar history.
“People continue to be drawn to the magic of the movies and were extremely enthusiastic bidding on the Oscars," said Sanders.
