The potential economic damage from Hurricane Sandy is currently estimated at around $50 billion, including property damage, lost business and extra living expenses.
While millions are displaced and/or without power, entertainment conglomerates and celebrities are doing their best to encourage employees and fans to donate to the cause—and they're putting their money where their mouth is.
See what Time Warner, News Corp., Disney, Viacom and Chelsea Handler have donated below:
- Time Warner and its divisions (including Warner Bros., HBO, Turner Broadcasting System and Time Inc.) will donate $1 million to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts, the entertainment conglomerate said Friday.
- The conglomerate will also donate $500,000 to the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City and another $500,000 to other organizations serving victims in the tri-state area.
- Additionally, Time Warner will match U.S. employee donations to Sandy relief efforts up to a specified, undisclosed amount.
- News Corp. donated $1 million to help victims of Hurricane Sandy. The donation will be divided into $500,000 for the Mayor's Fund for NYC, and another $500,000 for relief in New Jersey.
- Viacom donated $1 million to the cause—splitting the million between the Mayor's Fund for NYC and local relief groups in Connecticut, Long Island , New Jersey and Westchester County.
- Walt Disney Co. donated $2 million to Sandy relief efforts. The company split the donation into two parts—$1 million for immediate relief efforts will go to the American Red Cross and $1 million will be for organizations focused on rebuilding efforts.
- “In addition, Cast Member and employee eligible donations to organizations involved in disaster relief will be matched, dollar for dollar, by Disney Employee Matching Gifts: A Program of The Walt Disney Company Foundation,” the company said in a statement.
- CNN has launched a web site called “Impact Your World” that provides information about ways to support the relief efforts.
- New Jersey-native Chelsea Handler donated $100,000 to the Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy relief after actor John C. Reilly asked viewers for donations Wednesday while a guest on her E! talk show.
- Other celebrities who have asked fans to donate to the Red Cross' relief efforts include LL Cool J, Jennifer Lopez, Cindy Crawford and Denise Richards.
- Tonight's telethon! Christina Aguilera, Jon Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Jimmy Fallon, Brian Williams, Kevin Bacon, Mary J. Blige, Tina Fey, James Gandolfini, Al Roker and Jon Stewart have joined NBCUniversal's broadcast of "Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together," a benefit telethon hosted by Matt Lauer to aid victims of the storm. The one-hour live telethon will air Friday, November 2, (8-9 pm ET) across the networks of NBCUniversal, including NBC, Bravo, CNBC, E!, G4, MSNBC, Style, Syfy, The Weather Channel, NBC Sports Network and USA.
