"I write my name and number on just about any object that I might lose," says New York-based filmmaker Casey Neistat, "and I often add a line, a gentle appeal to the finder's conscience: 'Please do the right thing.'"
In a Times' Op-Doc video, Neistat recapped the madness that ensued when he left all his luggage, including video equipment worth more than $13,000, in the back of a New York City taxi.
Trying to locate the missing items sent Neistat down a bureaucratic rabbit hole that "would drive anyone mad," even though he did everything he was supposed to. He "called 311, submitted a lost property claim, called the police precincts," and even saved the driver's receipt and medallion number. Still none of it mattered if the driver didn't return his belongings.
