The Duchess of Cambridge — Kate Middleton, as she used to be known — has gone into labour and was admitted into the Lindo Wing of St. Mary's hospital in the early hours of this morning, Kensington Palace confirmed.

Prince William and his wife reportedly do not know whether it will be a boy or a girl. The child will be 4th in line to the throne.

Here is what The Guardian is reporting:

The birth will be overseen by a medical team led by Guy Thorpe-Beeston, surgeon-gynaecologist to the royal household. Alan Farthing, surgeon gynaecologist to the Queen, will assist. Both medics were present at the birth of the Cambridges’ first child, Prince George, in July 2013.

Kensington Palace said: “Her royal highness the Duchess of Cambridge was admitted at 0600hrs to St Mary’s hospital, Paddington, London and is in the early stages of labour.

“The duchess travelled by car from Kensington Palace to the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s hospital with the Duke of Cambridge.”

The palace said “labour is progressing as normal”.

The royal baby watch was in full swing for days, as Kate Middleton well past her due date, believed to have been April 25.

Crowd control measures are also being stepped up outside St. Mary's Hospital in London, where Middleton was scheduled to give birth in the luxury Lindo Wing, according to the Express

On Tuesday, a royal convoy that was reportedly seen leaving Kensington Palace fuelled speculation that Kate Middleton was about to go into labour.

The rumour turned out to be false, but Kensington Palace appeared to make a joke of the hubbub by tweeting an image from 2013, when Prince William and Middleton first introduced their son Prince George to the public

The baby will be the fourth in line to the throne and ranks behind father Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, grandfather Charles, Prince of Wales, and brother Prince George, Prince of Cambridge.

The official birth announcement will be posted on an easel outside of Buckingham Palace.
