When Brad Pitt toured New Orleans two years after Hurricane Katrina occurred on August 29, 2005, much of the area was still barren and in ruins.

As a result, he founded the "Make It Right" project to help rebuild the Lower 9th Ward in Louisiana where more than 4,000 homes were destroyed by Katrina.

Since 2008, Pitt's plan to build sustainable, storm resistant homes and rejuvenate the area has been well underway.

While you can check out a list of the houses and progress made here, one of our friends recently visited the area to see the progress made and generously shared some of his photos with us.

The houses are elevated above the flood line for safety. Each is elevated 5 to 8 feet depending on the request of the homeowner.

The houses have metal roofs, escape hatches, hurricane window fabric and roof access.

"If there were another Katrina, these would withstand that kind of force. You could throw a two by four into it at 100 mph and it wouldn't penetrate these homes," says Pitt.
