  • Someone at CBS is confused. First CBS Interactive staffers were first sent a memo from division president Jim Lanzone saying that not only would the office be closed Dec. 24-28, but, even more, “Do not show up for work those days. The doors will be padlocked, and the windows turned into the material from that room in ‘The Avengers’ that Thor’s hammer couldn’t break.” But immediately after, executive producer Nancy Lane wrote to employees: “Contrary to the note below, CBSNews.com will NOT be closed [Dec. 24-28].  These are considered regular work days . . . We are a NEWS site and do not have the luxury of just shutting down or staffing so thinly as to be uncompetitive. Take the current situation in the Middle East . . . they do not celebrate the holiday and we must be available to fully and accurately program our site with all news updates. Questions? Come see me.”

'Skyfall' Is Now The Highest-Grossing Bond Film In The U.S. – Here's Your Box-Office Roundup

$

twilight-cast

Daniel Craig and Bond can't be stopped at theaters … unless if you're a "Twilight" vampire.

Though he may not have taken the box office again this weekend, "Skyfall" continues breaking records now being the first Bond film to break $200 million at the U.S. box office.

"Quantum of Solace" came close earning a total of $168.4 million back in 2008.

Despite its huge earnings, the final installment of "Twilight" blows 007 away, earning $226 million in the U.S. in two weeks.

However, the film has still earned less than the second film in the franchise, "New Moon." At this point, "New Moon" had earned $230.9 million at theaters. We expect "Breaking Dawn Part 2" will ultimately out earn the second installment of the vampire series.

All together, it was a massive box-office weekend with the top ten grossing more than $198.3 million. The total resulted in a new top gross for Thanksgiving weekend beating out 2009's $175.2 million intake.

This week's top films were much of the same as last week as no new release could break the stride of last week's top performing titles.

Out of the top ten are two films. "Pitch Perfect" bows out after earning $66.1 million worldwide.

And, it's been a long two months, but "Taken 2" is finally out of the top ten earning just under a million dollars. In its eight-week run, the sequel to the 2008 thriller earned a total $353.9 million worldwide.

Here are this week's winners and losers at the box office:

10. "Argo" fell four spots at theaters this week with $3.9 million to bring its seven-week total to $148.1 million worldwide.

9. In its second, the Weinstein Company's "Silver Linings Playbook" earned $4.6 million. The figure may not seem like much; however, the film was playing in a total of 367 theaters. Starring "Hunger Games" Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, the film cost an estimated $21 million to produce.

8. Denzel Washington's "Flight" moved down three spots in its fourth week with $4.6 million. To date, the film has earned $76.9 million.

7. FilmDistrict's "Red Dawn" remake was shot three years ago with now stars Chris Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson. That may have helped the film open to $14.6 million.

6. "Wreck-It Ralph" may have dipped two spots at the box office this weekend; however, Disney's video game film barely took a hit from last week's earnings with $16.8 million. The film has now earned $190.7 million worldwide.

5. Ang Lee's eagerly anticipated film adaptation of "Life of Pi" earned a big $22 million. The film, about a boy stranded on a life boat with a vicious tiger at bay cost an estimated $120 million to make.

4. Disney may have chosen correct in releasing its animated film a month earlier. DreamWorks' "Rise of the Guardians" opened to a paltry $24 million. In comparison, "Wreck-It Ralph" debuted to more than $70 million. This is the lowest box-office opening for a DreamWorks film since 2006's "Flushed Away" ($18.8 million). In total, that film went on to earn $64.6 million domestically, but finished out strong overseas.

3. The top three films look exactly the same as last week. "Lincoln" opened in 243 more theaters grossing $25 million. Daniel Day Lewis' performance as the 16th president has brought the film's three-week total to $62.2 million.

2. "Skyfall" added another $36 million to its overall total bringing the film just under the $800 million mark worldwide. $568.4 million of the 23rd Bond's earnings have come from overseas.

1. Once again, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2" owns the box office earning $43 million. In two weekends, the final installment to the franchise has earned $577.8 million worldwide.

Pandora Has A Problem With Rihanna That Could Kill The Company (P)

$

unapologetic rihanna

Pandora has become so popular it feels as if it's almost ubiquitous. Yet, as Bloomberg points out, it has fewer active users than Rihanna has Facebook fans.

Pandora has 54.9 million active users currently, while Rihanna has 63 million fans on Facebook.

So Pandora has claimed only a small part of the music listener universe. And as the chart below shows, user growth at Pandora isn't very aggressive — it doesn't look as if the company is going to double its user base anytime soon.

This isn't a business problem for Pandora until you look at it in the context of Pandora's overall user base and its contractual relationships with artists like Rihanna.

Sound Exchange, the artists' royalties company that distributes fees from online music companies, paid out $122.5 million to its artists in Q3 2012. According to Pandora's most recent quarterly filing, it paid $60 million to Sound Exchange artists, after booking about $90 million in ads played between those songs.

So even though Pandora is the biggest music streamer, it might be less than half of the entire music streaming universe (Spotify and various radio stations make up the rest).

At the same time, Sound Exchange and the artists it represents is lobbying against Pandora's desire to lower the royalties it pays even further. Lower royalties would ensure Pandora's economic survival, but it would make the service even less important to huge artists like Rihanna. If Pandora doesn't get those lower royalties, it will eventually run out of cash (absent debt or third party financing).

Lastly, Rihanna's Facebook page functions like a giant ad for her new album on iTunes.

In other words, Rihanna doesn't need Pandora financially as much as Pandora needs Rihanna.

And that's a huge problem for Pandora.

Until now, Pandora's argument has been that without it, artists would lose the huge revenue stream it pays them. But for the most important artists, Pandora is something they'll barely notice if it went away.

Chris Brown Shut Down His Twitter Account After A Vulgar Exchange With A Comedian

Chris Brown Rihanna

Chris Brown needs to stay off Twitter… or get some tips from his PR team on proper tweet etiquette.

Last night, the singer put out a tweet, claiming to look old for his 23 years. This came after his ex Rihanna, who he's been spotted with recently, instagrammed a topless photo of the singer lying across a bed.

Well, comedian and television producer Jenny Johnson (who's known for her foul language) decided to call Brown out.

Unsurprisingly, the singer decided to respond (less than amused) leading to a heated, childish exchange between the two that quickly spiraled out of control.

Brown since deactivated his account; however, Johnson retweeted every single one of Brown's messages

You can view the exchange below:

Johnson since claims to be receiving death threats on Twitter since her exchange with Brown.

Here's one of the final tweets we saw the singer send out before his Twitter account was deactivated telling fans to vaguely ask Rihanna if she's mad:

Soon after, Rihanna tweeted out "Sweet life #1Love," a hashtag she has been rumored to affiliate with Brown in the past.

Viewers Took To Twitter To Tear Apart Lindsay Lohan's 'Liz And Dick' Performance

liz and dick

Twitter is a place where people from all walks of life gather together to express a wide variety of viewpoints. Unless they're talking about "Liz & Dick."

Just as critics did last week, viewers on Twitter tore apart Lifetime's film about Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton's relationship. They didn't buy Lindsay Lohan as Taylor, though the actress's had her defenders: Namely Bret Easton Ellis, who wrote "The Canyons," a project in which Lohan stars.

"I'm thoroughly enjoying and consistently amused by 'Liz & Dick,'" he wrote. "The haters went overboard on this one."

The "American Psycho" author delights in contrarian positions, so he must be very happy today.

But the Twitter barrage may bode well for Lifetime in terms of ratings: Presumably those who savaged "Liz & Dick" also watched it.

Here are some of the best Twitter responses to "Liz & Dick":

@MinaRoss: "Lifetime should go ahead and just change there motto to, 'Your Life. Your Time. We're Sorry.'"

@lizzwinstead: "Gilbert Godfried sounds more like Liz Taylor."

@pattonoswalt: "Dear @lindsaylohan: I give you permission to Tweet me to smithereens when I do Lifetime's CHAZ BONO: THE CRUELEST CUT in March."

@KatCorbett: It's like watching the kid from The Parent Trap in a school play being stalked by a gladiator with a drinking problem.

@DItzkoff: "In their defense, everyone else in #LizandDick thought they were making 'Innocence of Muslims.'"

@emilynussbaum:"Somewhere there is a pie chart of who's at fault for the badness of this movie. Lohan's only 10%."

@jakefogelnest: "After tonight, Nielsen is going to start reporting ratings in the 18-34 ironic demo."

@ShmittenKitten: "Lifetime should make a movie about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes staring Amanda Bynes and a pile of garbage."

@LouisPeitzmanTruth: I'm actually not sure I'm going to watch Liz & Dick tonight because I realized it could be a trigger and bad for my sobriety."

@poniewozik: "All of you livetweeting LIZ & DICK and swelling its ratings will have yourselves to thank for "The Situation is... JAMES DEAN"

@sophjasin: "I don't think I was supposed to laugh at the end of #lizanddick

Jessica Simpson

Just six months after giving birth to baby Maxwell in May, Jessica Simpson has already lost a whopping 60 pounds.

Simpson, who is currently being paid a reported $4 million to be a Weight Watchers sJessica Simpsonpokesperson, followed a strict diet following the WW points plan — but cooked by her own personal chef.

TMZ obtained Simpson's four-month crash diet plan, which was filled with low-fat smoothies, protein, and veggies.

After kicking off her weightloss with a 15-day smoothie diet in July, Simpson is now on a meal plan that includes egg whites, chicken satay, soba noodles and two "crunchy" snacks a day, such as fat free cheese with whole grain Ryvita crackers, celery with peanut butter, apple with sliced turkey and edamame.

While pregnant, Simpson has said she hit an all-time high of 170 pounds, but then, as she says in her first Weight Watchers ad, "There is a lot of pressure to lose weight but I'm not a supermodel. I'm just Jessica trying to eat real food in the real world and I really just want to be healthy for my daughter."

Today, Simpson's diet looks like this (via TMZ):Jessica Simpson Diet

Simpson has come a long way since her first post-pregnancy Weight Watchers ad in September, in which she refused to show anything but her face,

In September, Simpson debuted a slimmer frame on the premiere episode of Katie Couric's self-titled new daytime talk show:

Simpson showcased an even sleeker frame this weekend at an event in Florida.

Charlie Sheen Gave Lindsay Lohan $100K To Pay Tax Debt

Charlie Sheen Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan, 26, and Charlie Sheen, 47, may have a 21-year age difference, but the hard partying, seemingly reformed by rehab duo found they had a lot in common while bonding on the set of the upcoming "Scary Movie 5."

TMZ is reporting that while on set, Lohan mentioned her ongoing tax problems to Sheen, who offered to cut her a check on the spot — but she declined.

But just last week, Lohan's business manager received a check from Sheen for $100,000 intended to pay off the IRS, which the actress promptly did.

Lohan previously owed the IRS $233,904 in unpaid back taxes, according to TMZ, but between her "Liz & Dick" and "The Canyons" roles, is slated to earn over $2 million by the end of this year.

Sheen and Lohan, who play themselves in the film set for a 2013 release, briefly appear as "The world's hottest new couple" but, in true "Scary Movie" horror spoof fashion, at least one of them gets brutally murdered in the film's opening.

The first films ever made were created in the late 1800s, but by the early 20th century, studios were already rejecting screenwriters.

One of those studios, Essanay Film Manufacturing Company out of Chicago — which was famous for producing a series of Charlie Chaplin films between 1907 and 1925 — had a stock rejection letter they sent aspiring screenwriters who didn't make the cut.

The studio would check one of 17 reasons why they didn't think the writer's manuscript was a good match for them. Check out the letter below (via Retronaut):

LOL Elmo Sesame Street toy

Sesame Street resident Elmo has gotten a lot of bad press lately.

In recent weeks, longtime voice of Elmo Kevin Clash resigned from the show after being embroiled in an underage sex scandal, the details of which are still developing.

This had some analysts concerned that the bad press would be bad news for sales of the new LOL Elmo.

However, according to Gerrick Johnson, a toy industry analyst for BMO Capital Markets, the laughing doll was flying off the shelves this past weekend.

"Elmo (Hasbro) sales did not appear to be affected at all by current events or news, with LOL Elmo sold out in just about every retailer we visited," he wrote in a note to clients.

While this is only anecdotal, it is nevertheless good news for Hasbro.

6 Ways Charles Schulz Was Really Charlie Brown

$

0

Charles Schultz, Charlie Brown

While Charlie Brown and his creator, Charles Schulz, share a first name, the character was actually named after one of Schulz’s art school friends, not after himself. Despite this, the big-headed character shares a lot more with his creator than a name.

In honor of what would have been Charles Schulz’s 90th birthday, let’s celebrate the man and his creation by considering how similar Schulz was to good old Chuck.

This story first appeared on Charles Schulz’s 88th birthday.

They Both Had Terrible Valentine’s Days

We all know that Charlie Brown never receives Valentines even though he gives them out to everyone else, but he isn’t the only one that Cupid seemed to laugh at. Schulz was skipped ahead two grades as a child and was always shy and awkward around the other students in his classes. For his first grade Valentine’s Day, his mother helped him make up Valentines for everyone in class so no one would be left out. Unlike Charlie, who was ignored by everyone else, Schulz excluded himself. He was too shy to put the box of Valentines at the front of the class, so he held on to them throughout the day—and later brought them back to his mother.

They Mutually Loved The Little Red-Haired Girl

If you’re mostly familiar with the animated Peanuts classics instead of the comic strips, then you probably don’t realize just how unobtainable the Little Red-Haired Girl actually is—she’s never actually shown in the entire comic strip series. Charlie Brown talks about her and on rare occasion he gathers the muster to talk to her out of the frame, but she is never once shown in the strip.

The Little Red-Haired Girl and Charlie Brown’s obsession with her was based on a real-life obsession Charles Schulz had for a young redhead named Donna Mae Johnson. The couple met while working together at Art Instruction, an art correspondence school. Before long they had been together for three years, but when Charles asked her to marry him, she refused, only to marry another man in October of the same year. While the two remained friends, it seems Schulz never completely recovered from his broken heart. He once said of the ordeal, “I can think of no more emotionally damaging loss than to be turned down by someone whom you love very much. A person who not only turns you down, but almost immediately will marry the victor. What a bitter blow that is.”

They Both Loved Their Dogs

It isn’t too surprising to hear that Schulz had a black and white dog during his childhood that later served as the inspiration for Snoopy. Interestingly, the dog wasn’t actually a beagle though, it was a pointer named Spike. Charles’ first published drawing was of little Spike and it was featured in the newspaper comics feature Believe it or Not.

Why You Think CNBC's Anchors Use Apple Laptops When They've Really Got PCs

becky quick

We love CNBC. It's on 24/7 here in our office. So we were thrilled to get a closeup look at the CNBC TV set that dominates the floor of the New York Stock Exchange recently, when we celebrated the Silicon Alley Insider 100.

On the day we visited, we got to walk in front of the desk where Jim Cramer, Becky Quick and Carl Quintanilla do their commentary on the news. As usual, they pecked away at their sleek, gray laptops in between takes.

I've always thought that the appearance of those machines on CNBC was one of the best product placements ever: Day after day, CNBC's high-income audience is reminded that the show uses Apple Macbooks.

Later, when the show was over, we got a chance to sit behind the desk.

The anchors are not using Apple laptops, it turns out, even though it looks that way on TV. Rather, they're black Dell Latitude 2120 Netbooks — the cut-price, style-free workhorse of the laptop world.

They look like Macbooks because CNBC has disguised them by adding gray lids, along with some CNBC branding where the Apple logo might have been. There's no outright fakery, of course. But viewers might be forgiven for thinking that they're Macs, so to speak.

Here's the proof: These shots were taken (with my cellphone — apologies for the quality) during and then after the show. You can see how, from the camera's point of view, their computers look like brand new Apples, but from Becky, Jim and Karl's seats it's Windows all the way.

Macy's CMO: Here's Why We Stuck With Trump

In spite of 675,000-name petition urging Macy's to dump Donald Trump as a spokesperson, the company isn't making the Tweet-happy pundit pack his bags.

"We try to separate from that and we try to let the customer vote on that," Macy's CMO Martine Reardon said at Business Insider's IGNITION conference. "As long as that customer is still voting by wanting to buy that product, then that's what it's all about."

The half million -lus protestors complained that "Donald Trump does not reflect the 'magic of Macy's,'" accusing him of sexism, racially charged birther beliefs (about President Obama), and producing most of his Macy's line in China.

Macy's CEO also defended the retailer's partnership with Trump. "Please understand and appreciate that Macy's marketing and merchandising offerings are not representative of any political position," he wrote in a defense to the petition.

Reardon discussed the difficulties of using celebrity spokespeople.

"There is some risk because I don't control what Justin Bieber does day in and day out, nor do I want to," she said.

Although when the young pop star does something controversial, like allegedly punching someone in the face, Reardon clarified, "I don't think it reflects on Macy's at all."
