No one can find the last Pokémon in Pokémon Go

0
0

The phenomenon that is Pokémon Go — the free mobile game that puts Pokémon into real life using your phone's camera — is worldwide. Tens of millions of players are catching Pokémon and exploring the game's limits at all hours of the day, all over the planet.

You'd think someone would've found Ditto by now.

Ditto

Yet, as of this writing, no one has. He's the elusive #132 in the Official Pokémon Pokédex— the encyclopedia of all official Pokémon, and the backbone of Pokémon Go. His number slot is there in your in-game Pokémon Go Pokédex, and folks have even dug into the game's code and found plenty of evidence that he's in the game.

And the CEO of the game studio behind Pokémon Go, John Hanke, said during TechCrunch Disrupt this week:

"I couldn't tell you how to find Ditto, because it wouldn't be any fun if I did. It will happen for you, I promise."

Excluding Legendary Pokémon — which are said to be coming at some point, likely in a bigger way than simply being capturable — Ditto is the only Pokémon of the original 151 represented in the game that's yet to be found.

Fans think there's a good reason for that: the nature of what Ditto is. Look no further than — what else? — the Pokédex for more on this logic.

"Ditto rearranges its cell structure to transform itself into other shapes. However, if it tries to transform itself into something by relying on its memory, this Pokémon manages to get details wrong."

Of course! As Reddit user "validproof" explains, when Ditto was introduced originally (on the Pokémon cartoon in the 1990s), it was a sort of mutant Pikachu. "What is interesting is that it is unable to fully transform in the beginning, and so it says 'Pikacha'/'Pikachan.' validproof wrote on Reddit.

All of which is to say: Ditto is almost certainly hiding in plain sight.

Perhaps you've heard of the Eeevee Easter Egg?

Eevee evolution

It's a simple trick: Before evolving your Eevee, name it one of these three names, and it'll evolve into one of three different types of Pokémon! The names are pulled from an original Pokémon cartoon episode. And in a panel at San Diego Comic-Con this summer, the folks behind Pokémon Go confirmed that more Easter Eggs are waiting to be found by players— Easter Eggs like the Eevee one.

As a result of those two things, fans on Reddit have devised a massive crowdsourced campaign to find Ditto. Some of the ideas being proposed are too good not to share:

  • "Attempt to name pikachu ':|' before evolving it. To resemble the face of a Ditto."
  • "Geodude's back has a face which appears to be asleep. Ditto will also transform into a rock when sleeping to avoid attack. Coincidence? Do we have to wake Ditto up, or try to take a picture of him from the back?"
  • "Ditto in the game Pokemon Snap is disguised as a Bulbasaur. We might have to switch to the camera view when we encounter Bulbasaur and attempt to take a picture of it, similar to the game 'Pokémon Snap.'"
  • And of course, "Snapping a picture of Bulbasaur [did not work]. However, we did not rapidly tap/tickle the Bulbasaur in camera mode. Someone please try to tap spam/tickle it in camera mode."

Let's be clear: We're not making fun.

Video games often feature esoteric Easter Eggs, and it's no surprise that Pokémon Go has its fair share. That players are trying seemingly ridiculous things to suss out those mysteries is no surprise — the Eevee one is an awfully deep cut of a reference.

For now, however, no one has succeeded. Ditto remains a mystery, which is a delicious irony to savor while it lasts.

The 20 most ridiculous things superstar musicians have demanded at their concerts

0

taylor swift

Van Halen demanded all the brown M&M's be removed from the group's candy bowl. Turns out that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to music stars' backstage demands.

Outlets like The Smoking Gun and Defamer have reported on a variety of leaked backstage documents known as tour riders. A tour rider sets the terms that a venue must fulfill for an artist's performance. We sifted through 20 such riders to see what major musicians want in their dressing rooms. It can get pretty weird.

Some requests may confirm diva suspicions — as with Kanye West's various requests for a barber's chair and a Coke and Hennessy slushy machine. But we were more surprised by other requests, like one rap star who demanded Lunchables.

From specific scented candles to organic honey bans, see what the biggest artists ask for backstage:

Beyoncé

Beyoncé demands her dressing room be kept at 78 degrees and asks for chicken legs "HEAVILY SEASONED" with cayenne pepper and rose-scented candles. And don't have Coca-Cola products anywhere near her — Beyoncé can only be seen with Pepsi products due to a contractual agreement.

The Demands:

1 Large table for catering dressed with white tablecloths.
Dressing room should be 78 degrees
4 Brand New White Towels in bathroom (2 face & 2 body)

Hot Food:
Juicy Baked Chicken: Legs, Wings & Breast only (Please season with fresh garlic, season salt, black pepper, and Cayenne pepper HEAVILY SEASONED!!)
Steamed Garlic Broccoli
Lightly Seasoned Green Beans
Lightly Seasoned Steamed Spinach

Beyoncé can only have Pepsi products.
1 Case of Aquafina water (half cold, half room temperature)
1 Hot Tea Set up (Please have NEW Coffee Pot)
Sliced Lemons Wedges
Rose scented candles
Lighter for candles
CD player

Adele

Adele's many requests include chicken salad sandwiches, Marlboro Lights, the "best quality" red wine, and six metal teaspoons in her dressing room. She also bans organic honey.

The Demands

12 Small bottles still (non-carbonated) spring water (at room temperature)
1 Electric kettle for BOILING water
6 Large mugs for tea. All mugs should be new, washed and dried.
6 metal teaspoons
2 "Squeezy" bottles clear honey (not organic)
1 Bottle very best quality red wine (Italian, French or Spanish)
1 Assortment of chewing gum
1 Pack Marlboro Light plus 1 disposable cigarette lighter
1 Small selection fresh fruit, to include bananas, apples, grapes, fresh berries NO CITRUS FRUIT!
1 Small plate of assorted freshly made, individually wrapped sandwiches, to include chicken salad. Sandwiches must NOT contain tomatoes, vinegar, chili or citrus fruit

Kanye West

Among Kanye's previous requests are a barber's chair, Carmex lip balm, shower shoes, and a lot of alcohol. On his most recent "Saint Pablo" tour, West demanded a slushy machine with mixes of Coke and Hennessy and Grey Goose and lemonade.

The Demands:

1 Tub Plain Yogurt for dipping
4 small Yoplait Yogurt
1 Bowl of assorted nuts
1 Bowl of Sunkist Salted Pistachio Nuts (No Red Coloring)
2 Packs of Extra Chewing Gum
1 Bottle of Hot Sauce (Tabasco, Caribbean Type)
1 Box of Toothpicks
1 750 ml bottle of Hennessey Liquor
1 750 ml bottle of SKY or Absolut Vodka
1 Bottle of Patron Silver Tequila
4 Six Packs of Heineken Beer

When you're the highest-paid entertainer in the world, you can afford to live in the height of luxury — and in many locations.

Taylor Swift topped Forbes' Celebrity 100 list this year with reported earnings of $170 million.

Over the years, she has used her money to purchase and rent a number of incredible residences across the US, from Beverly Hills, California, to Nashville, Tennessee, where she made her name as a country star.

We've previously taken a look inside Swift's $17 million seaside Rhode Island mansion— which she reportedly paid for in cash in 2011 — and her new $40,000-a-month townhouse in New York's West Village.

All told, she's spent about $44 million buying real estate (not counting her rental).

Take a look inside all five of Swift's current homes across the country:

How Netflix's new Amanda Knox documentary makes you completely rethink the case

0

amanda knox netflix

On November 1, 2007, in Perugia, Italy, 21-year-old Meredith Kercher was found murdered in the bedroom of an apartment she was sharing with two Italian women and a 20-year-old American exchange student named Amanda Knox. Knox and her boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, said they realized something was wrong when they discovered Kercher's door was locked, drops of blood in the bathroom, and a broken bedroom window. They proceeded to call the police.

What followed is a sensational story that tabloid journalists went crazy over, and which ended with Knox spending four years in an Italian prison following the murder, for which she was convicted, until she was ultimately acquitted.

Five years after being freed from prison because of DNA contamination and a year after Italy's highest court exonerated her, a new documentary, "Amanda Knox," delivers the definitive tell-all of the events.

To be released by Netflix on September 30, the movie had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and received rave reviews for its in-depth investigation of every aspect of the Knox saga told by many of the main players, including Knox.

Directors Rod Blackhurst and Brian McGinn, like most people in the world, couldn't get over how much media made the case a sensation. By 2011, when they started work on the movie, the Knox story dominated headlines once again when she was freed from prison.

"I think that for us we were a little bit confused by why it was so big and also how something that starts as an undeniable tragedy and a terrible act of violence becomes a piece of front-page news and that then becomes entertainment," McGinn told Business Insider at TIFF. "So we thought it would be interesting in looking at how that happens and to try to get really deep inside to the roots of what really causes that kind of story."

"There were so many headlines, and so many stories, and yet people didn't seem to have any further clarity," Blackhurst added.

Amanda Knox Netflix

What "Amanda Knox" reveals is how crucial mistakes in the handling of the crime scene and a false confession by Knox led to complete dysfunction in the case. But it also shows how journalists became obsessed with Knox.

Footage of her kissing Sollecito and showing little remorse for what happened to her roommate by the time news cameras arrived at the crime scene started the narrative. In the weeks and months to follow, Knox was branded as sex-crazed, and as the investigation continued, the theory was that Kercher was a victim in some deviant crime of passion involving Knox and Sollecito.

Though before this film, Knox had done the big TV interviews and a book once back in the US, Blackhurst and McGinn still felt Knox hadn't opened up and given her side of the story, and neither had Sollecito, nor the lead investigator of the murder, Italian detective Giuliano Mignini.

"All of them felt this narrative the media put out there was not representative of who they were and we wanted to understand from a human point of view what it would feel like to have that applied to you and what it felt like to be caught up in these events and circumstances," Blackhurst said.

So the filmmakers began trying to get access to everyone who was involved. But they made it clear that they would not move on the film until their subjects were comfortable.

"We met Amanda and Raffaele when they were acquitted in 2011, but it wasn't until 2013 that she decided, on her own, that she was ready to talk," Blackhurst said. "That was always very important to us to say we're not going to come and dine and dash, we're not trying to steal something out of your mouth and leak it on Twitter as quickly as possible. We want to put in the time to understand you as people."

They shot Knox for the first time in 2014. Once she signed on, Raffaele, Mignini, and others including Nick Pisa, who broke many of the stories about the case for the Daily Mail, also agreed to talk.

But then there was explaining to an audience what likely happened to Kercher, and that meant diving into DNA evidence and deciding how to deliver the information as simply as possible.

The filmmakers used graphics to point out that Knox was never in the room where Kercher died, according to the DNA present in the room. They also showed that DNA evidence linking Knox to the knife thought to be used as the murder weapon was inconclusive.

"Initially we thought the graphics would be more complex," McGinn said, "but what we realized quickly was the only way to keep it a human story and feel empathy for the people involved was to put it in more layman's terms."

Along with the graphics, McGinn and Blackhurst got the DNA experts from the trial to be in the movie. They had never previously done an interview about this case.

The filmmakers are most proud of bringing much-needed context to the moments that were only captured in small news bites around the world when the case was happening.

In "Amanda Knox," we get never-before-heard audio recordings of Amanda and her mother speaking in prison, and some added clarity to the footage everyone remembers of Knox kissing Sollecito outside the murder scene. The documentary explains through interviews with Knox and Sollecito that it was not what it seemed.

"You can feel what it felt like for those people to be caught up at that time," Blackhurst said of the movie. "You're able to give context to this one little bit because you now can see and hear from them."

"Amanda Knox" will be available on Netflix September 30.

The 16 best Tom Hanks movies ever, ranked

Sully Warner Bros final

For over three decades, Tom Hanks has been almost every type of character.

Starting his career as a funnyman on the TV series "Bosom Buddies" and then taking his nice-guy style to the big screen in romantic comedies like "Splash" and "The Money Pit," Hanks moved to more dramatic work in 1993 with his Oscar-winning role as an AIDS patient in "Philadelphia."

Since then, Hanks has gone back and forth, showing his diverse talents but often playing characters who, deep down, are upstanding men.

In Hanks' latest role, playing "Miracle on the Hudson" pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger in the Clint Eastwood-directed "Sully" (out Friday), he again shows he's the Jimmy Stewart of our era.

Here are Hanks' 16 best performances in movies ever, ranked:

SEE ALSO: The 12 best Matthew McConaughey performances ever, ranked

16. Rick Gassko in “Bachelor Party” (1984)

In one of his first movie roles, Hanks is great as a soon-to-be-married guy who tries to stay out of trouble after his friends throw a wild bachelor party for him.

15. Walter Fielding Jr. in “The Money Pit” (1986)

Another classic from Hanks' romantic-comedy days, in which he plays opposite Shelley Long as a couple who struggle to repair a broken-down house they've bought. Hanks' physical comedy is at its best here.

14. James B. Donovan in “Bridge of Spies” (2015)

For most actors, a role like this in a Steven Spielberg movie is a highlight in their filmography. For Hanks, it's a strong performance but hard to compare to the others higher on this list.

'Sully' wins the weekend box office for a second-straight week

Sully Warner Bros final

Though it had a lot of competition, Clint Eastwood's "Sully," starring Tom Hanks as "Miracle on the Hudson" pilot Chesley Sullenberger easily topped the weekend box office for a second-straight weekend.

Taking in an estimated $22 million this weekend (according to The Hollywood Reporter), the movie is the latest directorial hit for Eastwood, following the success of his 2014 release "American Sniper," and likely will garner Hanks another best actor nomination for his powerful performance.

Newcomers "Snowden," Bridget Jones's Baby" and "Blair Witch" all had the potential of having big openings with their established names and most general audiences knowing what they were about, however all three underperformed despite being widely released across the country.

"Blair Witch," the first true sequel to 1999's found-footage monumental hit "The Blair Witch Project," took in an estimated $9.7 million to come in second. A disappointment for Lionsgate as it released the film on over 3,000 screens, but with a budget of $5 million, it still made its money back (for the production of the movie at least).

edward snowden filmIn third, "Bridget Jones's Baby" returns Renée Zellweger to her famous character. But audiences weren't into the third film in the franchise as it only took in $8.2 million.

Then Oliver Stone's "Snowden," which looked at NSA whistle blower Edward Snowden (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt), came in fourth with $8 million. Split by critics with a 58% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie's attempt to bring a thriller feel to Snowden's acts didn't grab audiences.

The box office should get a nice surge next week with anticipated titles like "The Magnificent Seven" and animated movie "Storks" hitting theaters.

After about 30 seconds, Hayden looked up from the iPad screen and said: "Could we be done?"

Oliver Stone's "Snowden" tells the story of NSA subcontractor Edward Snowden, who infamously leaked classified information about the NSA's surveillance activities to journalists in 2013. To Hayden, the portrayal is an "alternative universe."

Julia Louis-Dreyfus reminds us why she's one of the best actresses alive in Emmys speech

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is sorry that her satirical HBO show, "Veep," has become way too much like the actual world of politics.

Dreyfus won her fifth consecutive Emmy on Sunday for the role of "Veep's" Selina Meyer, the narcissistic, often bumbling vice president who eventually becomes president. During her acceptance speech, she apologized to her producers and crew for talking them into working on the show. But she also had a mea culpa to make to the American people.

"While I'm apologizing, I'd also like to take this opportunity to personally apologize for the current political climate," Louis-Dreyfus said. "I think that 'Veep' has torn down the wall between comedy and politics."

Many comparisons can indeed be drawn between the antics on the HBO show — especially Jonah Ryan's (Timothy Simons) congressional run on the latest season — and the current election between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. But Louis-Dreyfus swears she'll put an end to it.

"Our show started out as a political satire, but it now feels more like a sobering documentary," she said. "So I certainly do promise to rebuild that wall and make Mexico pay for it."

As an aside, the actress already held the record for most consecutive wins going into Sunday's awards. With this fifth win, she is now the most-awarded lead comedy actress in the history of the Emmys.

Matt Damon continues his hilarious 'feud' with Jimmy Kimmel at the Emmys

The Matt Damon-Jimmy Kimmel "feud" spilled over on to the Emmys stage on Sunday night.

Host Kimmel returned to the stage after his late-night show lost in the outstanding variety talk series category to HBO's "Last Week Tonight" with John Oliver. And guess who was waiting for him on the stage? Yep, Damon.

Nonchalantly eating an apple, Damon said, "I missed the last category. Did you win?"

"No, we didn't win, all right?" the host answered.

"That's a bummer. That makes a lot of sense. You must be really bummed out," Damon continued. "So you're not going to get a trophy?"

"The Martian" star then continued to kick the comedian while he was down.

"This is so humiliating. I'm sorry," Damon said. "You lost and now you have to stand out here for the rest of the night in front of everybody."

Of course, this is just a continuation of the purported feud that has been raging between the comedian and the movie star since the third season of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

Kimmel wasn't happy about how a show went and decided to end it with apologizing to Damon for bumping him from the episode. It was an inside joke between Kimmel and a producer, but Kimmel continued to end several episodes by saying he bumped Damon from the show.

Since then, the two have been trading jabs at each other and enlisting others to take part. Sunday's Emmys is just the latest in the history and a point on Damon's side of the board.

Watch Damon tease Kimmel for his Emmy loss below:

'Game of Thrones' just beat an incredible all-time Emmys record

"Game of Thrones" and HBO have 39 reasons to be happy on Sunday night.

Thirty-eight represents the number of Emmy Awards the show now tallies.

The 39th reason would be the new record it has set for the number of Emmys won by an individual show.

On Sunday, HBO surpassed the 37 awards won by NBC's "Frasier" to become the most-awarded show in Emmys history. That's huge in and of itself, but especially since the TV Academy has only in recent years begun to open itself up to voting for genre shows.

Wins for drama series, writing, and directing on Sunday helped to nab the record.

This record-breaking accomplishment will have to hold the show over until 2018. The producers' decision to push the next season of the show into late summer means it won't be eligible for the 2017 Emmys.

On Friday, Amazon confirmed that its new car show,"The Grand Tour", will premiere on November 18. Helmed by former "Top Gear" hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, the show will be released on the company's Prime Instant Video streaming service.

In addition to the announcement, Amazon also released a short trailer teasing the upcoming season. The 30-second clip showed the trio up to their old tricks driving exotic cars in a series of stunning locations. Although brief, we were able to isolate the hot cars featured in the trailer. The creators of the new 'Blair Witch' movie poked fun at its poor box office opening

Blair Witch Lionsgate

Most filmmakers react to their movie having a poor opening weekend by shutting off their phones and heading into seclusion, but not the creators of the sequel to "The Blair Witch Project."

"Blair Witch," the first true sequel to the legendary found-footage horror film released in 1999, underperformed at its opening at the box office over the weekend, taking in an estimated $9.7 million. Things didn't look good for the movie going into the weekend as it only had a 37% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

But the creative team behind the movie, screenwriter Simon Barrett and director Adam Wingard, were good sports about the whole thing. On Sunday, after the weekend box office numbers went out, Barrett tweeted this:

That followed with Wingard tweeting:

Though the company behind "Blair Witch," Lionsgate, likely expected more from the release — especially hiring on Barrett and Wingard, who together have become a super duo when it comes to horror movies having made hits "You're Next" and "The Guest" — they can't be too mad at them as the $5 million-budgeted sequel pretty much made back its production budget in its first weekend.

Barrett followed-up his tweet with this more sincere one:

This is not the first "Blair Witch" movie since the original. Documentary filmmaker Joe Berlinger tried his hand at the franchise with 2000's "Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2," which also was a box office failure. However, Berlinger tweeted this on Monday morning:

Berlinger is right, his sequel did better (it took in $13.2 million its opening weekend), but most horror fans will agree his "Blair Witch" movie is still going to go down as one of the worst sequels ever.

Amazon's TV boss explains which shows have no place in the new TV landscape (AMZN)

As streaming services like Netflix and Amazon become bigger players in the TV business, it doesn’t just change the way we watch shows, but also the way we value those shows.

Since Netflix makes its shows available on-demand, and releases entire seasons at once, sitcoms where you can tune into any random episode lose some of their competitive advantage.

But broadly, Amazon Studios boss Roy Price says that mid-level shows aren’t really useful anymore.

“The real competition is not to be broadly accepted, but to be truly exceptional,” Price said on a recent Wall Street Journal Media Mix podcast. “You need a show that people are going to demand. There is, for instance, no show at 8:30 that you can put in between your 8 o’clock hit and your 9 o’clock hit.”

You don’t need a “pretty good” show that can retain audience. “So those mid-level shows lose value, and it’s really about the competition for the top shows that get the most attention.”

That makes things like the Emmys very important to Amazon and Netflix.

“[The Emmys] are the only thing that seems to resonate with the general population [to signal quality],” FX CEO John Landgraf told Bloomberg recently. It’s how people know which shows are must-see TV, one reason networks spent a whopping $60 to $80 million just to promote their Emmy nominations.

So how are streaming services stacking up? At the 2016 Emmys, Amazon snagged two primetime Emmys, barely behind Netflix, which got three. The top networks were HBO and FX, both with six.

Here were the complete list of Emmy winners by network:
