Kanye West defends his controversial Taylor Swift video at the VMAs: 'This is fame, bro'

MTV gave Kanye West four minutes on Sunday night's Video Music Awards to do whatever he wanted, and he did not disappoint.

"I came here to present my new video," West said as he came on the stage, "but before that I'm going to talk."

Then he went into his usual Kanye West self-serving tangent, which could go down as an all-time great VMAs moment. There was clearly no filter on what he was saying.

He talked about his controversial music video "Famous," which features his lying in bed naked with other famous people, like his wife, Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift, and Bill Cosby.

"It was an expression of how we are, that audacity to put Anna Wintour next to Donald Trump," West said. "I put Ray J in there, bro. But this is fame, bro."

He added of "Famous," which led to a public he-said, she-said about whether he got Swift's blessing to use a lyric about her in the song: "Bro, I love all of y'all. That's why I called her."

West also talked about violence in America.

"I was speaking at the Art Institute last year and one kid came up to me and he said, 'Three of my friends died and I don't know if I'm going to be the next,'" said West. "And you have to think, you know, when you're a senior and you don't feel like doing any work, if you feel you seeing people dying right next to you, you might feel like what's the point? Life could start to feel worthless."

KanyeWest also touched on the negativity he got from people after comparing himself to Steve Jobs in a New York Times interview.

"I sit down and talk to older, rich people — aka white — and they tell me don't compare yourself to Steve Jobs, don't compare yourself to Walt Disney, and my friend Shikia told me there are three ways to keep people impoverished: take away their self-esteem, take away their resources, and take away their role models."

West went on to say that he looked up to artists and merchants and that there were fewer than 10 in history who are his equals: Harry Truman, Henry Ford, Howard Hughes, Walt Disney, and Steve Jobs.

Here's a transcript of West's entire speech on the VMA stage:

"I am Kanye West. And that feels really great to say, especially this year.

"I came here to present my new video, but before I do that I'm going to talk.

"Now, later tonight 'Famous' might lose to Beyoncé, but I can't be mad — I'm always wishing for Beyonce to win, so.

"But for people to understand just how blessed we are, it was an expression of our now, our fame right now, us inside the TV. Just the audacity to put Anna Wintour next to Donald Trump, I mean I put Ray J in there, bro. This is fame, bro!

"I see you Amber.

"My wife is a G now that allows me to say that. We came over in the same boat and now we're in the same bed. Well, maybe different boats, but.

"But if you think about, it was 22 people last week murdered in Chicago. People come up to me like, 'Man, that's right!' Taylor this and Taylor that. Bro, I love all of y'all. That's why I called her. [Laughs]

"So, I was speaking at the Art Institute last year and one kid came up to me and he said, 'Three of my friends died and I don't know if I'm going to be the next.' And you have to think, you know, when you're a senior and you don't feel like doing any work, if you feel you seeing people dying right next to you, you might feel like what's the point? Life could start to feel worthless. I know times for me, I sit down and talk to older, rich people — aka white — and they tell me don't compare yourself to Steve Jobs, don't compare yourself to Walt Disney —

[Tells someone in the audience to quiet down]

"My friend Shikia told me there are three ways to keep people impoverished. Taking away their esteem, taking away their resources, and taking away their role models. My role models are artist, merchants. Less than 10 I can name in history.

"Truman, Ford, Hughes, Disney, Jobs, West.

"Brooo! Tonight we are here to have fun. I'm standing in front of my idol Puff Daddy. I'm standing in front of my wife Kim Kardashian West, I'm standing in front of the future Chance the Rapper, 2 Chainz, bro, we are undeniably the influence, the thought leaders. I'm going to play you a piece of my art, and I just hope ya have a good time."

It was rumored MTV would give Kanye West four minutes to do whatever he wanted on the Video Music Awards stage, and he did not disappoint.

The rapper nearly took double the amount of time to address the crowd at Madison Square Garden in New York City about Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, his controversial "Famous" music video, and more before debuting a new music video for "Fade."

If you missed any of West's more than seven-minute speech, INSIDER has transcribed the entire bit for you below:

I am Kanye West, and that feels really great to say especially this year.

Kanye West released an explicit and bizarre new music video at the MTV VMAs

Kanye West used his allotted airtime at the 2016 MTV VMAs to speak and premiere an explicit new music video for his song "Fade" — a track from his album "The Life of Pablo," which came out in February.

The "Fade" video begins with R&B singer Teyana Taylor dancing in a workout room while scantily clad and then takes a racy turn when it cuts to footage of Taylor making out with Cleveland Cavaliers guard Iman Shumpert in a shower.

The video ends with a bizarre and confounding shot of Taylor dressed as a cat, lying on Shumpert's back, and surrounded by several pink sheep.

Beyoncé already won an award that MTV brought back just for her and brought the mothers of Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Mike Brown, and Oscar Grant onto the red carpet, but it was her stunning performance of songs from her visual album "Lemonade" that left people literally in awe.

Beyoncé, appropriately, even dropped the microphone.

She essentially followed the order of her album, starting with "Pray You Catch Me," and transitioning into "Hold Up," "Don’t Hurt Yourself," and "Sorry."

The visuals were on point, with fire imagery, a literal bat where she smacked a camera, and stunning choreography.

Beyoncé ended with a slamming performance of "Formation" with dozens of dancers backing her up. The last shot showed the dancers lying down, making the gender symbol for female.

Honestly, people lost their minds.

Beyoncé just had the best performance at the Video Music Awards of all time. And we’re all just lucky to have witnessed it.

Britney Spears took the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards stage on Sunday for the first time since 2007 to perform her single "Make Me..." from her new album, "Glory," which came out last Friday.

Spears, who was accompanied by G-Eazy, wore a yellow metallic bodysuit and moved around the stage with some incredible dance moves.

It's hard to compare it to her iconic VMA performances in the early part of her career, but it was better than her 2007 performance, notorious blunder, during which she looked to be sleepwalking on stage.

Sony is about to release 2 new PlayStations — here's everything we know

$

0

Over 40 million people already own the PlayStation 4 game console from Sony, but with 7 billion people on the planet, Sony is betting it can move another few million.

To that end, the Japanese hardware maker has not just one but two new versions of the PlayStation 4 in the works. And one's coming out pretty soon!

Here's everything we know:

SEE ALSO: The 3 coolest things about the new, slimmer PlayStation 4

First thing's first: Two new versions of the PlayStation 4 are in the works. They are the PlayStation 4 Slim and the PlayStation 4 "Neo."

DON'T WORRY: All your PlayStation 4 games, digital and disc, will continue to work on the Slim and the Neo. They're all part of the same "platform."

No games are available only on the new systems. PlayStation 4 Neo is "intended to sit alongside and complement the standard PS4," according to Sony's head of PlayStation, Andrew House.

Sony has publicly confirmed only one of the two new PlayStation 4 consoles: the PlayStation 4 "Neo." It's a more powerful version of the existing PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 4 Neo is slightly different internally from the current PS4. It's not a gigantic jump in power, but it is a notable lift. Here's the full rundown, care of leaked specs:

—It's got the same main processor, but it has been tweaked to run slightly faster.

—It's got a new graphics processor that's far more capable than the current PS4's graphics processor (just over twice as powerful).

—It's got the same amount of memory, but it's also been tweaked to handle more equations.

All of which is to say: No, you don't need to replace your current PlayStation 4 with Neo.

To that end, the PlayStation 4 "Neo" is capable of powering 4K games — the next evolution in graphical fidelity after high-definition.

4K and UltraHD are the next evolution of television. Like standard definition was to high-definition, such is high definition to 4K/UltraHD. Neo can produce games and movies in 4K.

You'll want a nice 4K/UltraHD TV to really take advantage of those prettier games. If you already have one, that's fantastic! But you're in the minority — less than a quarter of American households have them.

4K/UltraHD TVs cost $500 to $1,000 (and up, of course) depending on size and options and which company you go with — Samsung's TVs cost more than Vizio's TVs, for instance. They aren't outrageously expensive, but you'll pay a lot more for a new 4K/UltraHD TV than you will for the standard HD equivalent.

The taping for the Comedy Central celebrity roast of Rob Lowe was filmed Sunday night in Los Angeles, and though Lowe may have been on the hot seat, the guests on stage directed all their venom at fellow roaster Ann Coulter.

The conservative commentator was invited to roast Lowe, but it turns out the most brutal jokes of the night on stage were at expense, according to The Daily Beast.

“Ann is one of the most repugnant, hateful, hatchet-face b-----s alive,” said stand up comic Jimmy Carr at the taping. “It’s not too late to change, Ann. You could kill yourself!”

“The only person you will ever make happy is the Mexican who digs your grave,” said comedian Nikki Glaser.

Even singer Jewel got in on it: “I do want to say as a feminist that I can’t support everything that’s been said tonight. But as someone who hates Ann Coulter, I’m delighted.”

The comics at the celebrity roasts, spearheaded by comic Jeff Ross, are known for never holding back. And "Saturday Night Live" cast member Pete Davidson proved that when he took the podium and called Coulter a "racist c--t" during his slot.

"Everybody has such thin skin," Coulter, who is a supporter of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, told The Daily Beast after the taping. "Bless their hearts, they were trying to be funny."

The celebrity roast of Rob Lowe will air on Comedy Central on Labor Day.

Rihanna received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night, and her performances were all the proof anyone needed of why she deserved it.

Instead of putting on one career-spanning performance of hits, as per tradition for the award, the pop star gave viewers four such performances over the course of the show.

Rihanna opened the VMAs by running through hit singles like "Only Girl in The World" and "Where Have You Been."

Her second performance, a "dancehall medley," included "Rude Boy" and her 2016 chart-topper "Work."

Taylor Swift casually showed up for jury duty, and people freaked out

$

Taylor Swift was notably absent from the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night, and it seems that a jury-duty appearance in Nashville, Tennessee, on Monday morning could be at least one reason she didn't make it to the award show at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Swift's fellow jurors expressed disbelief on social media with a string of photos and videos of the pop star on Monday morning when they spotted her doing her required public service.

While it is fascinating to see a huge star like Swift taking on the humble, everyday tasks of the average American citizen, there isn't exactly an "I'm a celebrity" loophole on jury-duty forms.

Celebrities have been identified showing up for jury duty before, though they don't always make it far. Madonna was reportedly excused after two hours because her presence would have been a "distraction."

UPDATE: A judge dismissed Swift from the trial on Monday, which involved an alleged "aggravated rape/kidnapping" charge, according to TMZ. The singer cited her own ongoing civil case of sexual assault against a Colorado DJ as grounds that she could not be an impartial juror in the Nashville case.

As a rule of thumb, video games tend to look better as time moves forward. That's how it goes.

Not so much when it comes to 2011's "Skyrim" — a fantasy epic where you slay dragons, learn magic, and explore a vast world. The game's looking better than ever in 2016 thanks to the work of passionate fans. Just look at this:

The game was released on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC originally. It's the PC version that's gotten the major update seen here.

21 highly successful people who prove getting fired doesn't mean your career is over

In 1985 Apple, the company Steve Jobs cofounded, sent the executive packing.

Getting kicked to the curb by your employer can certainly be demoralizing.

As Jobs said in a 2005 commencement speech at Stanford University, "What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating."

But Jobs and many more successful people prove that what may initially feel like failure may just be the launching pad you need for success.

Here are 21 people who turned their termination into huge success.

Steve Jobs was fired from Apple, the company he cofounded. His second act turned out to be bigger and better than the first

When Jobs was in his 30s, the very company he created fired him.

"I was out — and very publicly out," Jobs said in a 2005 commencement speech at Stanford University.

Jobs spent the summer of 1985 in a "midlife crisis" trying to decide what he wanted to do, from entering politics to becoming an astronaut, said Alan Deutschman, author of "The Second Coming of Steve Jobs."

During his time away from Apple, Jobs cofounded computer company NeXT, which was later acquired by Apple, and launched Pixar Animation Studios. When he returned to Apple nearly a decade later, he brought the innovation of the iPod, iPhone, and iPad.

Later in his Stanford speech, Jobs described his wilderness years as a blessing in disguise:

"I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life."

Thomas Edison secretly conducted experiments in his office at Western Union that got him fired

Until one night in 1867, when he had a chemical accident at the Associated Press bureau news wire, according to "Famous Americans: A Directory of Museums, Historic Sites, and Memorials."

Edison worked the night shift so he could have more time to spend on his inventions and reading. One night when he was experimenting with batteries, Edison spilled some sulfuric acid that ate through the floor and spilled onto his boss' desk below.

He was fired the next morning, but decided to pursue inventing full-time and received his first patent two years later for the electric vote recorder, according to Bio.

Before heading to Yale, Hillary Clinton was fired from her brief stint at a salmon cannery in Valdez, Alaska

The Democratic presidential nominee recounted on the "Today" show that after graduating from Wellesley College, she and some friends worked their way across Alaska washing dishes, and she eventually wound up working in a fishery scooping out salmon guts.

"I was given a spoon and some boots and I was told to take out the insides of the salmon," she said.

Clinton didn't last long in that role, however, noting that the Japanese workers who were taking out the caviar yelled at her for working too slowly. "So they literally kicked me out of that job," Clinton said.

She says they then placed her on the line packing the salmon head to tail. But when she noticed the salmon were "green and black — they looked horrible" and a peculiar stench, she questioned the man running the operation about the salmon's quality.

"When I left, I came back the next day and the whole operation was gone," Clinton said. "So I think that was the equivalent of getting fired."

During a previous inter viw on Letterman in 2007, Clinton called her stint at the cannery her "favorite summer job of all time," noting its role in her future success: "Best preparation for being in Washington that you can imagine," she said.

A 23-year-old rapper who refuses to sign a record deal is tearing up the hip-hop world all by himself

chance the rapper mtv vmas

Chance the Rapper is the most talented rapper of his generation and a pioneer in the music industry. His latest album, "Coloring Book," is one of the best-reviewed albums of the year and debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 list. It's the first streaming-only album to chart on Billboard's ranking.

And he got his due in the mainstream when he became a fixture (and a meme) at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards.

Now some people are surely wondering who Chance is.

He's already made awards history by helping to allow streaming-only albums for Grammy consideration. Many suspect "Coloring Book" will get a nomination at the next Grammys.

Miraculously, Chance (aka Chancelor Bennett) has done all of this without a label supporting him. He's turned down record deals from numerous labels, and depends on word of mouth and his Soundcloud account for distribution.

Meet the most successful fully independent musician of our era:

SEE ALSO: The 10 biggest box-office bombs of 2016 so far

Chance the Rapper calls his albums "mixtapes." He recorded his first one in his senior year of high school.

He formally kicked off his career with the song "Windows." It got him some attention in Chicago's hip-hop scene, and Chance spent another eight months tinkering with the rest of the album. When "10 Day" was finally released in April 2012, the album got over 400,000 downloads on the music-sharing site DatPiff and got Chance a cult following.

In July that year, Childish Gambino raised Chance's profile even more by featuring him as a guest on his song "They Don't Like Me."

Chance instantly became a star with "Acid Rap."

Still label-free, Chance released "Acid Rap" in 2013. It got on a bunch of best-of-2013 lists and was downloaded more than a million times. The most popular song on the album on Soundcloud, "Favorite Song," features Childish Gambino.

Chance also collaborated with Vic Mensa, who's having a similar career trajectory, on "Cocoa Butter Kisses."

But Chance didn't keep doing the same thing over and over again. He joined a band and made uplifting Christian rock.

Height: 450px

In 2015, Chance joined a band called Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment for a quirky album called "Surf." The Social Experiment is a collective of Chicago-based musicians.

The album is structured differently: The artist names aren't included in the track titles, and different songs appeared on the Soundcloud accounts of different musicians instead of being collected together in one place. It would have never happened at a commercially driven record label.

More importantly, the music was a stylistic departure for Chance. His vocal performance was still rap, but it's not really a rap album. The whole thing takes a jazzy and explicitly Christian tone. The highlight is a track called "Sunday Candy." Chance codirected the music video.

Rudy Giuliani slams Beyoncé's VMAs performance: It was 'a shame'

One of the highlights from the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night was the performance by Beyoncé, who did a medley of songs from her epic visual album "Lemonade," which included a tribute to mothers of African-Americans killed by police officers.

But the performance didn't impress former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

When asked about Beyoncé's VMAs performance by the hosts of Fox News morning show "Fox and Friends," Giuliani said that he thought the display was "a shame."

He elaborated: "You're asking the wrong person because I had five uncles who were police officers, two cousins who were, and one who died in the line of duty. I ran the largest and best police department in the world, the New York City Police Department, and I saved more black lives than any of those people you saw on stage by reducing crime, particularly homicide by 75 percent, of which maybe four or five thousand were African-American young people who are alive today because of the policies I put in effect that weren’t in effect for 35 years."

Beyoncé, who won eight Moonmen on Sunday including album of the year for "Lemonade," has been vocal about recent police shootings. The album was in part a commentary on police violence against young black men.

These are the blockbusters that saved Hollywood at the box office this summer

finding dory

With Labor Day upon us, it’s time to shut the door on the 2016 summer movie season.

Though there were some major hits that helped the North American box office rake in $4.5 billion (according to comScore, via The Hollywood Reporter), it will be best remembered for the bombs that were scattered throughout the season.

That's the second-best earning for a summer movie season ever, just behind 2013’s $4.8 billion (and 1 percent over last year’s), but looking back, the summer had the potential to be an all-time high.

Sadly, Hollywood gave audiences flat sequels and reboots that seemed out of date or just uninspired. Among the high-budget duds: "Independence Day: Resurgence," "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows," and the epic fail "Ben-Hur."

bad moms STX Entertainment finalYet the summer was saved by Disney. The studio had the top two domestic earners of the summer — ironically, sequels: “Finding Dory” ($479.6 million) and “Captain America: Civil War” ($407.8 million). That's a big reason why you won’t see Hollywood studios reversing their addiction to sequels during the summer season in years to come.

A pleasant surprise amid all this was how well certain mid-budget titles performed this summer.

From thrillers like “The Conjuring 2,” “Lights Out,” and last weekend’s No. 1 movie “Don’t Breathe,” to the comedy “Bad Moms” (which has made over $100 million worldwide on a $20 million budget, to date), audiences sought out and kept coming back to movies that had more of a draw because of their genre, stars, and old-fashioned entertainment value rather than major CGI effects and superheroes.

So Disney was certainly the foundation that supported the summer’s near-record revenue, but it was the success of smaller titles that got those hot months across the finish line.

Hollywood, take note. Please.

Gene Wilder, the legendary comic actor of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," "Young Frankenstein," and "Blazing Saddles," died Monday at age 83.

Wilder's family confirmed the news to the Associated Press on Monday.

In a statement, his family said that Wilder died from complications from Alzheimer's disease, which he had for his last three years.

The two-time Oscar nominee also starred in four films alongside stand-up icon Richard Pryor.

Wilder is best known for his collaboration with director Mel Brooks on "Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein."

"The Producers," Wilder's breakout role, earned him a best supporting actor Oscar nomination in 1969. He later shared a best screenwriting Oscar nomination with Brooks for "Young Frankenstein" in 1975.

Wilder was married to "Saturday Night Live" star Gilda Radner. Two years after they married, Radner was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She died in 1989 at age 42.

Here is the full statement from Wilder's family:

Meet Teyana Taylor, star of the Kanye West 'Fade' video everyone is talking about

For once, it wasn't Kanye West's words that stood out at the MTV Video Music Awards. It was a woman named Teyana Taylor.

When the rapper took the stage at the 2016 VMAs Sunday night, he delivered a typically tangent-filled speech, defending his "Famous" song's use of Taylor Swift and once again comparing himself to Walt Disney and Steve Jobs. But he also premiered a music video featuring a woman everyone is still talking about.

Teyana Taylor is the dancer seen in the explicit, bizarre, and entrancing music video for "Fade," off of Kanye's album "The Life of Pablo," and many were not familiar with her before seeing the video.

But Taylor is a singer who has put time in the industry, making a name for herself.

Here's everything you need to know about Teyana Taylor:

Teyana Taylor is an R&B singer who's worked with big names.

The 25-year-old artist from Harlem, New York, signed with Pharrell Williams’ Star Trak Entertainment record label in 2007 under Universal Music Group.

She's now on the roster of Kanye West's GOOD Music label, under Def Jam.

Here's her 2014 video for "Maybe," featuring rappers Pusha T and Yo Gotti. It's almost as steamy as the "Fade" video.

Her debut studio album “VII” came out in 2014. She also released an EP, “The Cassette Tape 1994,” in 2015.

Back in the day, however, she was just Teyana on MTV's "My Super Sweet 16."

She was on the reality show before she got signed to Williams' label, and made her dream old-school hip-hop-themed birthday a reality.

Why the late, great Gene Wilder walked away from movies 25 years ago

Gene Wilder Jessica Hill AP final

Comedy legend Gene Wilder died on Monday at age 83. The cause of his death was complications from Alzheimer's disease.

The actor will forever be known for starring in movies such "The Producers," "Blazing Saddles," "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory," and "Young Frankenstein."

But after 1991, the two-time Oscar nominee walked away from movies.

Outside of a few TV movies and series, he began writing novels. For the most part, he disconnected himself from show business.

In June 2013, while promoting the release of one of his books, he talked with film historian Robert Osborne, who asked Wilder why he was no longer in movies:

"If something comes along that’s really good and I think I would be good for it, I would be happy to do it. But not too many came along," Wilder said. "I mean, they came along for the first 15, 18 films, but I didn’t do that many."

Wilder had just 37 acting credits to his name, from 1961 to 2015.

"But then I didn’t want to do the kind of junk that I was seeing," Wilder said. "I didn’t want to do 3D, for instance. I didn’t want to do ones with bombing and loud and swearing, so much swearing going on. Someone said, ‘Oh, go f--k yourself.’ Well, if it was coming from a meaningful place I would understand it. But if you go to some of the movies, I don’t want to say which ones, can’t they just stop and talk? Once in a while it comes in handy but not running all the way through the film, and that put me out a lot."

Taylor Swift was dismissed from jury duty on a sexual-assault case because of bias

Taylor Swift's jury-duty appearance caught the attention of social media Monday morning, given that you don't see a superstar every day you walk in to do your civic duty.

But it turns out Swift was dismissed from the "aggravated rape/kidnapping case" after she told the judge she could not be an impartial juror, TMZ reports

Swift's involvement in another pending civil case of alleged sexual assault proved to be enough of a bias for the judge to dismiss the singer from a trial, which reportedly involved "a man who allegedly penetrated a woman with a broom handle after holding her at bay," according to TMZ.

Swift's own ongoing civil case involves a radio DJ from Denver, Colorado, who "allegedly fondeled her" at a concert in 2015.

As a result of her involvement in the Colorado case, the judge agreed that Swift could not be impartial in Monday's case in Nashville, Tennessee, and she was dismissed.
