The new 'Star Trek' wins the weekend box office, but performs below expectations

star-trek-beyond-trailer-2

It looks like the Trekkies came out in force to support the latest movie highlighting the voyages of the USS Enterprise, "Star Trek Beyond," as it won the weekend with an estimated $59.6 million, according to Variety.

However, it would have been better for the film's studio, Paramount, if a few more outside of the fan base showed up this weekend, as "Beyond" has the lowest opening weekend out of the two previous "Trek" releases in this most recent reboot of the sci-fi franchise.

With a $185 million budget, this opening weekend came in lower than the projections, but it can rebound with continued strong turnouts in the coming weeks at the domestic box office and strong openings worldwide.

But with 2009's "Star Trek" opening with $75.2 million and 2013's "Star Trek Into Darkness" taking in $70.1 million on its opening (both directed by J.J. Abrams), the drop for the third film, which is directed by Justin Lin, is a warning sign that the franchise needs some tweaking.

The issues may be less the story than the marketing. With an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, critics enjoyed the movie, but it seems Paramount needed to think outside the box to get people other than Trekkies to go to the theaters.

In second place is the animated movie, "The Secret Life of Pets," which continues to have a strong theatrical run taking in $29.3 million this weekend. It's now taken in $260.7 million total domestically.

But the same can't be said for the newest animated movie at the multiplex, "Ice Age: Collision Course," which only took in $21 million over the weekend. It marks the worst opening in the five-film franchise.

The big winner of the weekend is Warner Bros.'s $5 million-budgeted horror "Lights Out," which took in an incredible $21.6 million. A new horror franchise is born.

RANKED: All the 'Star Trek' movies from worst to best

Screen Shot 2016 07 18 at 2.05.28 PM

Star Trek is arguably the greatest science fiction television series of all-time — if for no other reason than its lasting influence on the genre.

But the franchise has also seen a solid run on the big screen.

And so, in honor of the thirteenth movie installment — "Star Trek Beyond" — hitting the theaters on July 22, we ranked all the Star Trek movies from worst to best.

12. Nemesis

"Nemesis" came out right in between the Voyager and Enterprise shows, at a time when everyone was feeling pretty burnt out from mediocre Star Trek overexposure. The movie also wasted its star talent by not giving much attention to the fan-favorite characters.

Two of the actors, LeVar Burton and Marina Sirtis, also once said that the director of the movie, Stuart Baird, had never actually seen a single episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

As a fun note, the main bad guy was played Tom Hardy.

Memorable quote:

Data: It appears to be a robotic arm.

Worf: [Sarcastically.] Very astute.

11. The Final Frontier

"The Final Frontier" was, honestly, pretty dull: there's not that much suspense, the plot is pretty disjointed, and the jokes lacked the usual Star Trek spark.

Memorable quote:

[Kirk goes to hug Spock.]

Spock: Please, Captain. Not in front of the Klingons.

10. Into Darkness

This movie is basically a microcosm for everything wrong with Star Trek movies: it seems like the people who made the film are not quite sure whether they should court the hardcore Star Trek fans or they should pander to the action movie lovers.

Also, as George Takei, who played Sulu in the original series, noted, it might've been more interesting to see Benedict Cumberbatch as a new character, rather than as Khan.

Memorable quote:

Bones: Don't agree with me, Spock. It makes me very uncomfortable.

Spock: Perhaps you, too, should learn to govern your emotions, Doctor.

Victoria's Secret photo editor reveals surprising secrets about how models are Photoshopped

victoriass ecret photoshop fail lais ribeiro

It's not exactly a secret that Victoria's Secret heavily Photoshops its ads.

The company is often guilty of egregious Photoshop fails that border on comical, from missing body parts to mysteriously-shaped waists (as pictured right).

But beyond the occasional laugh-inducing blunder, just how much does the company alter its models images?

A Victoria's Secret Photoshopper, who went by "Sarah," recently divulged some of her secrets to Refinery 29, revealing that what women see in photos is not often what photographers see in the studio.

That starts with padding women before they even take the photos.

"If you hold up the bathing suit in your own hand, it’s so heavy because they have all this s*** sewed into it." Sarah said to Refinery 29. She also said that the women often wore padded bras underneath bathing suits.

That all might change now, though; the company has been selling bralettes as a natural look takes hold in the fashion world.

Sarah also told Refinery 29 that the models usually wear hair extensions, too. "I don’t think I ever was on a shoot with a model that had real hair," she said.

Victoria's Secret

And if the model's proportions look unrealistic, that's because they probably are. Sarah told Refinery29 that the photos are heavily altered — and sometimes body parts are even swapped out for other people's respective body parts.

Interestingly, though, the models are often made to look curvier than they actually are.

"Models are thinner than you actually think they are, and we retouch them to look rounder," she said.

The CEO behind Pokémon Go just dropped some big hints to the future of the game

niantic john hanke

Niantic CEO John Hanke, the chief executive behind the smash-hit smartphone game Pokémon Go, stopped by San Diego Comic-Con on Sunday to drop some big hints as to the future of the game.

Here's what Hanke revealed, in a conversation with host and Nerdist founder Chris Hardwick, as reported by ComicBook.com:

  • Sorry about the servers: Hanke told the San Diego crowd that Niantic's servers "weren't provisioned for what happened" and the hit that it became, and that the company's engineers are working on keeping the servers up and reliable before they add new features. Similarly, Hanke also says they're working on fixing things like the busted Pokémon radar system.
  • Rare Pokémon are coming: "There are some rare ones that haven't showed up yet that will be showing up." That's important, given that only 145 out of the total 151 Pokémon have been accounted for by players worldwide.
  • Your team will be more important: Each Pokémon team — Team Instinct (Yellow), Team Valor (Red), and Team Mystic (Blue) — has one of the three Legendary Bird Pokémon associated with it, and that might play into which of those same birds players can catch. "They're kinda aligned with the teams, and we might have something to announce about the teams soon," says Hanke. Plus, the leaders of each time will start dispensing advice to players sooner rather than later, Hanke says.
  • Turning Pokéstops into Pokémon Centers: Hanke hints you'll be able to turn some Pokéstops in the game into Pokémon Centers, where you can heal your Pokémon, in accordance with the original video games that Pokémon Go is based on.
  • Players haven't found everything: Players of Pokémon Go have independently discovered that giving an Eevee the name of "Pyro," "Rainer," or "Sparky" will ensure that it evolves into Flareon, Vaporeon, or Jolteon, respectively. Hanke says there are plenty more little "easter eggs" like that which players haven't found.

Hanke confirmed that Pokémon trading is coming to the game, which he had previously told Business Insider. Meanwhile, players are starting to hit the limits of what the game currently has to offer, as Brooklyn-based Nick Johnson has caught all 142 Pokémon currently available in the United States.

In a tweet after the San Diego Comic-Con event, the game's official Twitter account revealed the characters who will be leading each of the three teams:

Usher and other artists tell Republicans to 'stop using our songs' on John Oliver

John Oliver trump

"Last Week Tonight" host John Oliver took on Donald Trump and the Republican Party's history of using unauthorized music in campaigns on his Sunday night show — with the help of a few notable guests.

Oliver began the segment by pointing out the humor in Donald Trump's song choices over the course of his campaign, including his unauthorized use of Queen's "We Are the Champions" at last week's Republican National Convention and a number of other instances of unlicensed song use in the past year.

At the end of the convention, as "a sarcastic amount of balloons" fell from the ceiling, Trump played the Rolling Stones' 1969 classic "You Can't Always Get What You Want" without the band's permission — to which Oliver quipped, "No sh-t," in a play on the song's title.

Oliver criticized Trump's use of REM's "It's the End of the World" as an introduction to his speech on the Iran nuclear agreement earlier this year. He then went on to demonstrate how unauthorized song usage has been a common trend for Republican politicians.

"Mike Huckabee pissed off Survivor by using 'Eye of the Tiger,'" Oliver pointed out, before cutting to a news clip of Irish band The Dropkick Murphys tweeting "we literally hate you" at Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker for his use of their popular song "I'm Shipping Up to Boston."

The "Last Week Tonight" host also noted how Bruce Springsteen once protested Ronald Reagan's use of his classic 1984 song "Born in the U.S.A."

Then, in an unexpected and amusing turn, Oliver cut to a comical music video, featuring Usher, Sheryl Crowe, Michael Bolton, Cyndi Lauper, and a number of other notable artists protesting the Republican Party by singing, "We're asking you right now, stop using our songs," as the song's chorus.

RANKED: The 20 best TV shows of the year so far, according to critics

riz ahmed the night of hbo 2

Summer isn't the TV wasteland it used to be.

This used to be a time when fans could catch up on shows they missed via reruns, but we have streaming services for that now.

It also used to be the season when networks aired shows that wouldn't have a chance during the proper fall/spring schedules, but now it's the time for critically acclaimed shows like Lifetime's "UnReal" and HBO's "The Night Of."

But are the summer shows hotter than what we've seen so far in 2016?

Metacritic keeps track of a curated group of critics, assigns each review a number according to how positive or negative it was, and then creates a weighted average score for each show.

We looked at how this year's offerings stack up on the scores, and you'll likely be surprised by what missed the cut. (Sorry, "Game of Thrones" and "Mr. Robot.")

Here are the 20 most critically acclaimed TV shows of 2016 so far, according to Metacritic:

T2: trainspotting

The original cast of Danny Boyle's critically acclaimed 1996 film "Trainspotting" reunites in a new teaser trailer for the film's upcoming sequel, "T2: Trainspotting 2."

Based on the novel "Porno," a sequel to Irvine Welsh's 1993 novel "Trainspotting," the second film — picking up a title cue from the "Terminator" sequel — will reportedly take place 20 years after the events of the first film. The original cult classic starred Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremner, and Robert Carlyle as destitute heroin users in Edinburgh, Scotland.

In the brief new teaser, a train rambles along a track before revealing the film's four stars, Spud (Bremner), Renton (McGregor), Sick Boy (Miller), and Begbie (Carlyle), standing together alongside the railway.

"It’s been 20 years since we met these characters," director Danny Boyle told The Hollywood Reporter about the upcoming sequel. "John Hodge’s screenplay brilliantly explores what's happened to them — and to us — in the intervening years."

"T2: Trainspotting 2" will open in theaters in February 2017.

This family's elaborate 'Game of Thrones' cosplay stopped fans in their tracks

This is House Bebo, a family of cosplayers who were the talk of San Diego Comic-Con with their elaborate "Game of Thrones" costumes.

sdcc 2016 cosplay 0358

When I first spotted Daline Bebo, the six-foot-seven father of two was ascending a staircase where a hundred or so "Game of Thrones" cosplayers gathered for a group photo. He wore an animal hide around his shoulders, platform boots, and a mask that widened the bridge of his nose. A miniature Sansa Stark and Joffrey Lannister held his hands.

"Yeah! Wun Wun!" the crowd cheered.

The decision to cosplay as "Game of Thrones" characters was a no-brainer for Daline and his wife Naomi, who are diehard fans of the show. Their costumes were such a hit, the family couldn't make it two minutes without being stopped to ask for a photo.

sdcc 2016 cosplay 0376

Naomi (who cosplayed as a femme Jon Snow) made the family's costumes, except hers and Joffrey's pants, by hand.

"We even brought our sewing machine to our hotel so we could finish up things, and we broke it," Naomi tells Tech Insider. "We spent a good day in our hotel room just hand-stitching everything that we couldn't get to with the sewing machine. It took a long time. Worth it!"

"I worked on my hair myself," five-year-old Demitra says. "I don't watch 'Game of Thrones.' Only my parents. I only wanted to do it to be Sansa."

Daline got major props from fans for cosplaying as the beloved, recently deceased Wun Wun. The giant hailed from The North, beyond The Wall, and joined forces with Jon Snow's army to take down Ramsey Bolton.

Wun Wun went out a hero, opening the gates at Winterfell just before being shot to death in the Battle of the Bastards.

Daline said his cosplay is lighter than it looks. The foam in his boots gives the already tall gentleman an extra boost.

"He's always had an affinity for the larger, more prolific characters, I think," his wife says. Daline also cosplays as Hellboy, and they're working on a Baymax ("Big Hero 6") costume.

The city of Moscow launched a limited version of "Know. Moscow. Photo," an augmented-reality app for iOS and Android with a striking similarity to Pokémon Go, on Monday.

"Know. Moscow. Photo" operates in a similar fashion to Pokémon Go, allowing users to capture virtual characters in real-life locations with their smartphone cameras.

But instead of hunting Pokémon, users search for and capture important Russian historical figures, according to Moscow's Ministry of Information Technologies and Communications.

"The goal of the app is to attract attention to Moscow's rich cultural heritage using fashionable augmented reality technology, as well as give Muscovites a reason to walk around more," the city government said, according to The Guardian.

Virtual doubles of historical figures who are already wandering through the capital include Russian Czars Ivan the Terrible and Peter the Great, first man in space Yuri Gagarin, Soviet rock legend Viktor Tsoi, composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky, poet Alexander Pushkin, and Napoleon Bonaparte, who invaded Moscow in 1812, according to the Moscow government.

The Wall

Unlike Pokémon Go, where Pokémon populate semi-randomly on the map, the historical figures in "Know. Moscow. Photo" appear in specific places in Moscow based on their life stories. For example, Tsoi can be found near a graffiti-covered wall bearing his name on Arbat Street. The landmark is dedicated to Tsoi and is frequently visited by fans.

Once the full version launches in August, characters will begin appearing in multiple addresses or may move around, forcing users to search for him or her, according to the Moscow mayor's office.

Many Russian-government members have criticized the app, however.

Yevgeny Fyodorov, a ruling-party member of Parliament, accused the developers of the app of using it to cause "mass disturbances" and to destabilize Russia before parliamentary elections in September in an interview with Russian news website National News Service.

Communist MP Vadim Solovyov even called for banning the game, comparing it to drugs and gambling, according to MSK Agency, a Moscow-based news service.

"There's the feeling that the devil came through this mechanism and is trying to simply tear us apart spiritually from within," Sen. Frants Klintsevich told Russia Today, the state news agency.
