katy-perry-voting

There may not have been any red carpets at polling centers today, but that didn't stop a slew of celebs from turning up to do their civic duty.

While out-of-towners like Kim Kardashian mailed in an absentee ballot, other A-listers like Mariah Carey, Katy Perry, and Beyonce cast their votes in person (and in heels) and for once, no one was shying away from cameras.

In fact, they turned the cameras on themselves, blasting fans with photos on Instagram, Twitter and Tumblr

We've compiled some of our favorites from the day.

Mariah Carey: "Pon de line, ooooh it's early! Haaaaa #Obama2012."

Katy Perry: (The day before hitting the polls) "Who's ready to vote tomorrow? I've got my outfit laid out!"

Miley Cyrus: "Dolls that vote together stay together."

Tuesday, the U.S. elected President Barack Obama to remain in the White House for another four years.

But it was a long road getting to election day, and before Mitt Romney or Barack Obama was declared a winner, celebrities used their public platforms to insert their influence over fans.

Jay-Z, Bruce Springsteen and Katy Perry all gave free concerts campaigning for Obama, while Kid Rock, Meatloaf and Clint Eastwood have all been present throughout the Romney campaign.

See which celebrities voted for which candidate during Tuesday's election.

OBAMA: Gwen Stefani

Gwen Stefani and her husband, Gavin Rossdale, held an exclusive $2,500 per-family fundraiser at her Beverly Hills home for the Obama Victory Fund.

The event, which was attended by Michelle Obama, told the 400-person crowd: "Barack can't do it alone. He's not Spider-Man. He's not a superhero. He's a human, so we need your help."

ROMNEY: Donny & Marie Osmond

Mormon, singing brother/sister duo, Donny and Marie Osmond, donated the legal limit to Romney's campaign in December.

In a 2007 interview on "Larry King Live," Donny said Romney has been "absolutely wonderful for the Morman Church."

Marie hoped Romney's faith doesn't discourage voters, saying "I hope people look at the person and what they've done."

OBAMA: Salma Hayek

The Mexico-born actress has attended numerous events in support of President Obama, including the White House correspondents' dinner

In May, she attended an exclusive fundraiser event at George Clooney's home and put on a luncheon in Los Angeles for the POTUS.

While everyone was sitting tight waiting for word on the results of the presidential election, ABC's Diane Sawyer also became a hot topic on Twitter due to her strange on-air behavior.

As the night went on, she began slurring the word projections multiple times, pausing in between words in every other sentence, and mispronouncing Barack Obama's name, causing concern to many viewers.

How The Media Hyped Up A Boring Election Night

Election Day came and went, and it was a snoozer by far.

While Mitt Romneypulled ahead in the electoral vote early on, Obama caught up soon after and took a commanding lead when California polls closed.

There were gimmicks and buzz words aplenty during tonight's election coverage as the media had to find creative ways to keep the American people entertained.

CNN's John King mesmerized the audience with his mastery of the touchscreen.

CNN also made this reporter roam around a virtual set for some reason.

Disney Made An Ad Showing How Darth Vader Would Spend A Day At Disneyland

In celebration of Disney's $4 billion acquisition of the Star Wars franchise, the company is promoting an ad that shows how Darth Vader would spend a day at the happiest place on earth. And it involves lots of teacups and lots of Dumbo (as Storm Troopers wave from below).

Disney actually released the first iteration of this video in June 2011 to market the opening of Star Tours, but a little slicing and dicing easily re-purposed the spot.

LA Voters Tell The Porn Industry To Start Using Condoms

Voters in Los Angeles County had to choose yesterday between authenticity and safety for their porn.

And they chose safety.

Nearly 56 percent of LA County voters voted in favor of Measure B, which requires all porn actors to wear a condom and producers to get a permit to shoot raunchy scenes, according to the LA County Registrar's Office.

The permit fee would pay for inspectors to randomly check porn shoots to ensure all the actors are using protection while working.

As 8:11 a.m. EST, 4,987 out of 4,993 precincts had reported to the LA County Registrar's Office.

But porn industry execs have already vehemently opposed the initiative, claiming all actors undergo strict STD testing frequently and the use of condoms would ruin their work.

Before they shoot a scene, performers have to show each other an email from a lab proving they tested negative for H.I.V., syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea.

Could Matthew Vaughn Be The Director Of The New 'Star Wars' Film?

0
0

matthew vaughn

Ever since Disney purchased Lucasfilm for $4 billion and announced three new films, everyone's been pointing fingers left and right at who should step in to re-imagine the franchise.

Through all the rumors, it looks like there may be a sound candidate for the job.

The guys over at Collider are hearing "X-Men: First Class" director Matthew Vaughn is in talks to direct Episode VII, saying it's the main reason he dropped out of working on the "X-Men" sequel:

"Why would Vaughn abruptly drop out of helming the X-Men sequel when the head of 20th Century Fox (Tom Rothman) is leaving the studio?  After all, while Rothman helped make some great movies over the past few years, he’s also known as a micro-manager that can rub some filmmakers the wrong way.  With Rothman out, I imagine Vaughn would have had more creative control on the sequel and it would have been an easier film to make.

But if Lucasfilm offered Vaughn the keys to Star Wars, that’s something he’d likely jump ship for."

Though "X-Men" earned $353.6 million worldwide, the earnings for a new "Star Wars" film could surpass that by a longshot. "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" alone has earned $848.7 million worldwide.

Here are the lifetime adjusted domestic grosses for the original "Star Wars" saga:

"Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope": $1.4 billion

"Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back": $787.4 million

"Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi": $754.4 million

Vaughn is also responsible for "Kick Ass," "Stardust," and "Layer Cake" starring Daniel Craig. He's currently working "Kick-Ass 2."

However, Celebuzz reported "Safety Not Guaranteed" indie director Colin Trevorrow is definitely on the short list of directors in early discussions to helm Episode VII.

With the one well-received indie film in the past , we find it difficult to believe Disney would rest the resurgence of a $4 billion dollar franchise on the creator of a viral short rather than a well-established director.

Neither Vaughn nor Trevorrow made our list of directors we'd like to see make the next installment.

Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos quickly had to toss to a reporter outside in Times Square and move to Katie Couric's social media screen to continue the night's coverage before power came back on just in time to announce the night's winner. Naturally, Carrie Fisher Wants In On The New 'Star Wars'

0

From Mark Hamill to Harrison Ford, we've heard everyone else's opinions on the new "Star Wars" film, so it's about time we've heard from Carrie Fisher aka Princess Leia.

Fisher told TMZ if asked, she's all ears to being in the upcoming Episode VII. (Mind you, Carrie Fisher is now 56.)

Take a look at the video:

As we said yesterday, other than some "Family Guy" cameos poking fun at the franchise that made her famous Fisher has fizzled from the spotlight.

Sure a Hamill, Harrison, Fisher reunion would be totally cool geektastic, but is that what we want to see in a new "Star Wars" trilogy?

The L.A. Mansion Where Michael Jackson Died Finally Sold For $18M

Michael Jackson Home

The final home where Michael Jackson was able to stare at "The Man in the Mirror" for the very last time has finally sold.

The 18,000-square-foot, French chateau-style Holmby Hills estate, which was on sale for $23.9 million earlier this year, was finally purchased for $18.1 million, according to broker Mauricio Umansky.

While Umansky wouldn't name the buyer, two people close to the deal told the WSJ it was Steven Mayer, a senior managing director of private investment firm Cerberus Capital Management.

AEG, Jackson's concert promoter, had been renting $100,000 per month property for the singer, his three children and staff for the six months leading up to his untimely June 2009 death in the home's master bedroom.

The property, which was previously owned by Ed Hardy owner Hubert Guez, boasts seven bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, 12 fireplaces, a screening room, wine cellar, guest house and pool—all on 1.25 acres of land in a secluded Los Angeles neighborhood.

Broker Umansky also happens to be "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star Kyle Richards' husband, and says he has a special connection to the late king of pop.

"I knew him and my wife [Kyle] has been friends with Michael Jackson since she was 8 to10 years old... And I personally think there’s some great energy in the house and I see it as a major positive. I’m excited to be selling it.”

Now take a look inside this historic home, now a part of Hollywood history.

Victoria's Secret's extravaganza of a fashion show is being taped tonight at the 69th Regiment Armory in Manhattan.

Many of the models are Victoria's Secret's superstars and are guaranteed to walk the runway, but some others get slotted into the glamorous gig.

It's a lengthy selection process, culminating in two days of callbacks.

Show producer Monica Mitro explains the casting process to ET:

"We really start thinking about it a year in advance and we see girls all year long. During these two days, we see all the callbacks, all the girls that we've liked throughout the year, the girls that we might have seen in magazines or in other shows or that we have shot ourselves that we wanted to try for the runway ... It's a long process."

What Supermodel Adriana Lima Eats To Get Ready For The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show

adriana lima

Supermodel Adriana Lima just had a baby. Even so, she'll definitely be ready to walk in this year's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

While other models, like Gisele Bundchen, claim to eat steak and pizza, Lima is actually honest about her pre-show regiment.

Last year, she told the Telegraph exactly how she gets ready:

"She sees a nutritionist, who has measured her body's muscle mass, fat ratio and levels of water retention. He prescribes protein shakes, vitamins and supplements to keep Lima's energy levels up during this training period. Lima drinks a gallon of water a day. For nine days before the show, she will drink only protein shakes - "no solids". The concoctions include powdered egg. Two days before the show, she will abstain from the daily gallon of water, and "just drink normally". Then, 12 hours before the show, she will stop drinking entirely."

In addition to her liquid diet, Lima works out for two or more hours a day.

Other models are also consuming liquids before the show. Fellow Angel Doutzen Kroes tweeted her smoothie recipe, which included cocoa, chia seeds, acai berries and flaxseed.

The fashion show is tonight but won't air until next month. We'll be there to show you what happens.

Photographers Will Soon Be The Most Valuable People In The News Room

0
0

camera picture self

Photographers will soon be the most valuable people in the newsroom, and it won't be long before they put writers out of jobs.

Why?

Because, when you're on the go, the easiest stories to consume, create or share aren't text based. They're photo based. As TechCrunch's MG Siegler just wrote, "If pen beats the sword, camera beats pen."

Take, for example, Hurricane Sandy coverage.

PandoDaily's Sarah Lacy asked if Sandy could be Instagram's big citizen journalism moment. But it wasn't just a big moment for Instagram. It was a big opportunity for news outlets. The most read stories were pictures of destruction caused by the storm without much text. People wanted to see the news, not read it.

As smart phones and tablets become more mainstream, the web is becoming more visual. Mobile devices are the new glossy magazines; text-ridden sites are boring, black and white newspapers.

Increasingly, attractive, photo-heavy articles are stealing the most online readership. Take these two articles for example:

One big photo hit can account for the same traffic as 10 well-written articles; they're easier to digest and often take less time to make.

Still, photos aren't anything without proper packaging. BuzzFeed's Jonah Peretti says he looks for people who can frame photos stories, not just find images. Instead of linking to cute cat photos, his team creates headlines like, "You Won't Make It All The Way Through These 10 Pictures Of Kittens Without Squealing."

With that in mind, the question becomes who's better to for news sites to hire: A writer they can train to take better photos, or photographers who have honed their skills but need help with context? Good photos are difficult to find for cheap. News sites might as well pay people on staff for images rather than iStock or AP.

News sites will still need a few good writers to stir up meaningful conversations and thoughtful analysis. But photographers will be the people the writers can thank for their paychecks. Their articles will steal pageviews and support publications in the rapidly approaching, mobile-first world.

Why It May Be Time For DirecTV And DISH To Join Forces

0
0

charles ergen

The idea of DISH and DirecTV becoming one isn't new.

DISH Network chairman and founder Charlie Ergen tried merging both it and DirecTV a decade ago only to have the deal blocked by the FCC

However, after disappointing Q3results from both, the two may consider joining forces again.

Combined, the two have seen definitive slowed growth since 2010.

DISH of course had its cable war with "The Walking Dead" distributor AMC, a four year debacle in which the latter has sought $2.4 billion from DISH.

The company blamed its net loss of $158 million and 19,000 subscribers in Q3 as a result of the $700 million it spent to settle its Cablevision / AMC dispute late last month.

DirecTV dealt with a fiasco of its own this summer when Viacom networks including Nickelodeon, MTV, and Comedy Centralwent dark for some 20 million customers for nearly a fortnight.

The cable provider blamed the 10-day blackout, which ultimately resulted in a 20 percent pay increase to carry the channels, as a reason the quarter missed expectations of 105,000 video subscribers.

Instead, the company added 67,000 video customers Q3 2012, a 260,000 subscriber loss from the 327,000 adds in Q3 2011.

During the company's earnings conference call Tuesday, Ergen said a merger between the two is a possibility

“I think it’s something that probably both companies will look at,” said Ergen.

One Touch Intelligence broke down both cable provider's net adds and losses for us over the past two years.

Here's how the two have faired:

Meet The 13 Full-Size Actors Playing Dwarves In 'The Hobbit'

0

the hobbit

If you can't keep all of the new "Hobbit" dwarves' names straight, you're not alone.

With more than a month until film's theatrical debut, MGM and Warner Bros. released 17 new character posters for the film over the weekend.

You can check them all out here; however, we were most interested in the posters of the many dwarves.

If you're confused by the similar, rhyming names, we've broken down the brood along with the actors behind the crew.

While most of the actors are fairly unknown talent from New Zealand and Britain, some of them worked with director Peter Jackson in the past and starred in other Hollywood blockbusters.

Check out who was in "Captain America," Jackson's "King Kong," and which actors share one show in common on their resumes–"Xena: Warrior Princess."

Thorin Oakenshield is the leader of the dwarf pack and played by Richard Armitage.

Oakenshield was forced to leave the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor because of the dragon Smaug. His sole goal is to retrieve the treasure held by the dragon in the Lonely Mountain.

Where you know him from: He played German Spy Heinz Kruger in "Captain America."

Fili is the youngest dwarf of the 13 played by Dean O'Gorman.

Fili and Kili are Thorin's nephews.

Where you may know him from: He played Iolaus alongside a young Ryan Gosling in "Young Hercules" and played three different characters on "Xena: Warrior Princess": Homer, Orion, and Wiglaf. Currently, he stars on New Zealand series "The Almighty Johnsons."

Kili is brothers with Fili and is played by Aidan Turner.

Where you know him from: Turner's no stranger to science fiction. He's played a vampire ("Being Human") and is set to play a werewolf in next year's "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones."

DISH CEO EATS HIS WORDS: Blames Q3 Loss On 'Zombies' Fight With AMC

0
0

Jon Hamm Don Draper Mad Men

Just weeks after Dish was ordered to pay the AMC network a $700 million settlement following a lawsuit that initially sought $2.4 billion, the satellite provider reported a third-quarter loss due to, and cited the litigation costs as the reason.

The loss was a personal humiliation for CEO Charlie Ergen, who previously told Wall Street that no one watched AMC, and its shows about zombies. Yet Dish lost subscribers during the period in which AMC was off Dish.

Dish attributed its loss not only to $730 million in court bills but also higher programming costs and increased advertising costs related to its Hopper set-top box in the quarter.

Net income was reduced  by $453 million, according to The Wrap. Except for that, Q3 net income would have been $295 million. The company posted a loss of $158.5 million, compared with a profit of $319 million in the year-ago period. Revenue declined from $3.60 billion to $3.52 billion.

The company also said it lost about 19,000 subscribers on a net basis after Dish dropped Cablevision channels earlier this year, leaving subscribers without popular shows such as "Mad Men," "Walking Dead," and "Breaking Bad."

But at least one analyst believes the third quarter loss is not due to litigation, but instead "points to a company whose core business is still struggling... badly," Bernstein Research's Craig Moffett said in a note, per The Wrap.

Ergen, who, in August, said his customers don't watch channels like AMC because "they live on farms and ranches," may now be eating his words.

Here's Ergen's exact quote from a Q2 2012 conference call with Wall Street analysts:

I've had satellite television for as long as satellite television has been around and there's never been one minute that I know of anybody in my family, or anybody who's came to my house, has ever watched one second of any of those channels.

We have data, real data from our customers. And for whatever reason our customers don't watch some of those ... at the level that we read about in the paper, perhaps because we skew a bit more rural or whatever. They live in farms and ranches ... They have no clue about zombies and New York.

After reporting the lower Q3 earnings, Dish said in a statement: "Our gross new subscriber activations continue to be negatively impacted by increased competitive pressures, including aggressive marketing and discounted promotional offers."
