Burt Reynolds turned down these iconic roles including James Bond — and now says he regrets it

There's no question about it: Burt Reynolds secured his living-legend status long ago.

With a career that spans close to 60 years and includes everything from memorable television shows to some of the highest-grossing movies of the '70s and '80s, the actor has too many classics to name.

But now at 80 years old and living comfortably in Jupiter, Florida, Reynolds has had time to reflect on his career and think back on what could have been.

He also talks about some of his regrets, namely in the documentary "The Bandit," which premiered recently at South by Southwest (SXSW) and looks back on the making of one of Reynolds' classics, "Smokey and the Bandit" (it will air on CMT later this year). One sore spot is his infamous 1972 nude spread in Cosmopolitan, which he believes cost him an Oscar nomination that year for his performance in "Deliverance."

Reynolds talked to Business Insider over the phone this week and reflected on some of the roles he was offered and what he now wishes he hadn't rejected.

He did not disappoint. He even told us one offer he's still happy he did turn down!

Before Harrison Ford, Reynolds was offered the role of Han Solo.

Prior to George Lucas going with the virtual unknown Harrison Ford to play the space scoundrel Solo in the first "Star Wars," Reynolds was offered the part. Reynolds was a hot name around the studios at the time Lucas was casting, having been a few years removed from his acclaimed performance in "Deliverance" and building his heartthrob status in the movie "The Longest Yard."

But at the time, Reynolds wasn't interested in the character.

"I just didn't want to play that kind of role at the time," he told BI. "Now, I regret it. I wish I would have done it."

He could have been the first American James Bond.

Following the forgettable tenure of George Lezenby as James Bond in 1969's "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," Bond creator Albert R. Broccoli went to Reynolds to be the next 007. But Reynolds felt an American couldn't pull off the role. He feels differently now.

"I think I was putting myself down in a way because I think I could have done it very well," Reynolds said. "Though once you do something like that and it's successful you're bound to play that part for a long time. I think I would have liked it. I like that kind of tongue-in-cheek humor."

Broccoli instead was able to get the first Bond, Sean Connery, to reprise the role, paying him a then-record $1.25 million salary.

The role Reynolds most regrets not accepting.

James L. Brooks specifically wrote the role of womanizing retired astronaut Garrett Breedlove in 1983's "Terms of Endearment" for Reynolds, but the actor turned him down (legend has it he chose the NASCAR comedy "Stroker Ace" instead). Brooks went with Jack Nicholson, who took home a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the role. (Reynolds has never won an Oscar.)

"I regret that one most of all because it was a real acting part," Reynolds said. "I wish I would have done it, and thinking back now, it was really a stupid decision, but I made a lot of stupid decisions in that period. It must have been my stupid period."

the big bang theory

The current television season is just a couple months from ending, so networks are making the tough decisions as to what will stay and what has to go.

With today's shrinking live viewership, it takes more than just ratings for a TV show to survive to see another season.

Networks are now looking at online, on-demand, and streaming viewership; social-media audiences; and international appeal, among countless other factors.

It can be a pretty anxious time for fans: Did you fall in love with a new show you desperately want to come back? Or did you invest years on something that might suddenly get the ax? Or do you just need one essential plot question solved so you can move on with your life? We feel you.

Here are the shows that are coming back for the 2016-2017 TV season from ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox, and NBC.

This actor transformed into David Bowie for an uncanny imitation on this week's 'Vinyl'

The appearance of David Bowie on HBO's "Vinyl" Sunday night took on new meaning following the rock star's shocking death earlier this year.

Bowie is played on the Bobby Cannavale-starring drama about the '70s recording industry by Noah Bean, a regular TV actor who's been in everything from "Elementary" to "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia."

The way Bean got the job was fairly simple: He happens to look at lot like Bowie, and he knows Cannavale.

"Bobby's kind of always had a joke with me that I look so much like Bowie, and then he called me up and said, 'Hey, they are going to do a Bowie episode,'" Bean told Business Insider of the episode, "Cyclone," in which a new female A&R executive at American Century Records goes to Bowie's rehearsal, while he's singing "Suffragette City," in an attempt to sign him.

So Bean read for the role and got approved by executive producers Terence Winter and Martin Scorsese, and his tape was even sent to Bowie's team. (The show's first season was filmed in 2015, before Bowie's death from cancer, which he had kept hidden from the public.)

"I think Bowie had to give his blessing and to sign off on me portraying him, just from my tape," Bean said. "When I heard that, it was hugely intimidating to take this on. It's David Bowie."

Bean had actually met Bowie once backstage at a play the actor performed in New York City.

"I just remember him being so complimentary to us, which was so touching," Bean said. "I think the interesting about him as an artist was that with all of his reinvention, we never really knew him."

vinyl david bowie

To prepare, Bean watched "Cracked Actor," a BBC documentary about Bowie from 1974, around the same period of the show ('73) when Bowie was coming off of the global success of his Ziggy Stardust era. On "Vinyl," Bowie, even in one scene, comes off as enormously charming, yet fundamentally unknowable.

"He had a great sense of humor. I was just trying to get a bit of his essence and then listening to his music and trying to lose some weight as well," Bean said. "I think cocaine was the staple of his diet. I didn't pick up a coke habit for this role, but I did try to lose as much weight as I could in a week and a half, which was basically just jump on the treadmill every day and put on 'Hunky Dory' and just run."

HBO also supplied Bean with the proper prosthetic "Bowie teeth" and the full costume and makeup to transform into the icon. The music you hear, however, comes from Bowie himself.

"It was funny, because I had to walk down the street in New York City from the trailer to the set and felt like a rock star," Bean said. "People wanted to take pictures with David Bowie. Even the crew was asking to get their picture taken with me. That helped. It just felt really joyful, which I think Bowie led his life that way, too.

"I had some stuff going on in my life, and it was so great to get into Bowie's world for me and do this thing. It was so fun," the actor continued.

And while Bowie's moment is all too brief on this week's "Vinyl," it may not be the last of him. The show was recently renewed for a second season.

"I'd be happy to go back," Bean said.

On Saturday, Amy Schumer attended a production of "Hamilton" for the second time and paid her respects to the bartenders who work during the musical with an extremely generous tip.

"At intermission, a member of her party came to the bar with another order and when he handed the receipt to my coworker, he said, 'Amy wants to make sure you get this,'" "Hamilton" bartender Madeleine DeJohn told Gothamist.

Schumer left a $1,000 tip on a $77 bar bill.

"[A coworker] showed it to me and I was equally speechless," DeJohn added. "We've served a lot of celebrities at 'Hamilton' and we've received some nice tips but never before had I seen a tip that even came close to this one."

DeJohn said that Schumer had left an $80 tip last time she attended a performance of the hit musical.

"I went up to her and thanked her and she basically was like, 'Of course, I've been there, I get it, you guys are great,'" DeJohn said. "I've never encountered this kind of generosity before."

Michael Jackson's pet chimp Bubbles is getting his own animated movie

Bubbles Michael Jackson Jacques Brinon AP

After “Community” creator Dan Harmon served as an executive producer on Oscar-nominated stop-motion drama “Anomalisa,” directed by Charlie Kaufman, he now has his sights on using the format to tell the story of one of Micheal Jackson’s most famous confidantes: his pet chimpanzee, Bubbles.

According to Deadline, Harmon and his Starburns Industries production company have acquired a script titled “Bubbles,” and plan to make it into a stop-motion animated feature.

The script tells the story of Jackson’s life through the perspective of Bubbles, from being adopted by the King of Pop from an Austin, Texas, research facility to the chimp’s time at the Neverland Ranch. Bubbles was eventually relocated to a Florida monkey sanctuary in 2005 due to over-aggression, and at the time there were reports that he may have attempted suicide.

If the movie is anything like “Anomalisa,” a black comedy highlighting a lonely man’s anxieties, expect a unique story. But there is some method to Harmon’s madness here.

To tell a story about the life of someone as famous as Michael Jackson, you need approval from his estate or, at the very least, obtain the rights to a book or story written about him. Telling the story from the perspective of Bubbles is a creative way of not needing permission.

Harmon will be a producer on the project. There has been no director attached yet, but that's not the only reason why the movie won't be in theaters any time soon, since stop-motion movies take a long time to make.

John Oliver provides a step-by-step takedown of Donald Trump's 'serious' Mexican wall proposal

donald trumps wall john oliver hbo

Possibly the first specific plan Donald Trump presented during his presidential run was a wall between Mexico and the United States.

The Republican frontrunner proposed the wall after his controversial statements about Mexican immigrants during the announcement of his presidential run. And since it has stuck, "Last Week Tonight" host John Oliver decided to take a close look at the proposal on Sunday's episode.

"The border wall is one of the few policy proposals that Trump has talked about in detail," Oliver said. "So instead of mocking or dismissing it out of hand, tonight let's take a serious proposal from a serious presidential candidate seriously."

The host promised to put aside the "potential racism and xenophobia" of the proposal. "We can come back to that later," he added, before jumping into the cost of Trump's border wall.

Made out of concrete, rebar, and steel, the 32-foot, 1,000-mile-long wall would cost $12 billion on the high end, according to the real-estate mogul. Oliver said that experts estimate it would actually cost about $25 billion to build.

But here's the kicker: Maintaining the wall is estimated to exceed the cost of building it within seven years.

john oliver donald trump wall hbo"So it's a big dumb thing that only gets more expensive over time," Oliver pointed out. “It’s like getting a pet walrus. You think it’s stupid now, wait until you learn what a bucket of sea cucumbers costs. You’ve not prepared for that.”

But wait, hasn't Trump said many times that Mexico will pay for the wall? According to the country's treasury secretary, and two former presidents, Mexico isn't sending the US a check for the border wall.

Trump has suggested that the wall would be paid for because of the $58 billion trade deficit the US has with Mexico, but Oliver explains that that's not the government's money to spend.

"[The money] is not lying around in some centralized Scrooge McDuck money bin labeled, 'Dumb Americans' money. Do not spend on border fence,'" Oliver pointed out.

So Oliver says the wall just isn't going to happen. But he's thorough, looking at where the wall could be built and discovering a few more reasons it would be impossible.

And beyond that, Oliver decided to pretend as if the wall could get built. Will it even work to keep immigrants and drugs cartels out of the US? According to him, no.

But the host has his own outrageous proposal.

Watch Oliver demolish Trump's big wall proposal and present his own below:

Veep HBO final

What better show to watch while we continue on in the constant drama of this presidential election than "Veep"?

The fifth season of the Emmy-winning comedy on HBO starts April 24, and now we have a glimpse of the dysfunction that's in store with the new trailer that went online.

We pick up with President Selina Meyer's (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) hopes for reelection halted by a tie in the votes. So while all that gets sorted out, she continues to try to stay presidential, though that's never been her strength. And on top of that, it looks like she's going to have to keep the country together during a financial collapse and a security breach from Chinese hackers.

A highlight from the trailer is the new flame Meyer looks to have this season, John Slattery of "Mad Men" fame, which is a perfect choice.

The 5 best moments from Netflix's 'Pee-wee's Big Holiday' explained by the screenwriter

$
0
0

Paul Rust Alli Harvey Getty

It's been 31 years, but Pee-wee Herman is finally back with the Netflix movie "Pee-wee's Big Holiday." It's a hilarious reminder that the childlike comedy of Pee-wee creator Paul Reubens still works.

Years in the making, the movie saw Reubens teaming with Judd Apatow, who came on as a producer to help get the latest Pee-wee movie off the ground. One of Apatow's contributions was connecting Reubens with comic Paul Rust.

The star and cocreator of the Netflix show "Love," Rust is also a die-hard Pee-wee fan, and jumped at the chance to cowrite the "Big Holiday" screenplay with Reubens.

Rust talked to Business Insider about how five of his favorite moments from the movie were created.

(Warning: spoilers for "Pee-wee's Big Holiday" ahead.)

"Pee-wee's Big Holiday" is currently available on Netflix.

SEE ALSO: Here's everything you need to know about "Batman v Superman" going into the movie

1. Reubens and Rust wanted a mix of "E.T." and Ed Wood for the alien opening scene.

Pee-wee movies love a dream sequence, and "Big Holiday" is no different. It opens with Pee-wee saying goodbye to an alien he's befriended before it goes back to its mothership. According to Rust, his and Reubens' love for Steven Spielberg's "E.T. the Extra Terrestrial" inspired the scene.

"My favorite movie is 'E.T.' and Paul loves 'E.T.' as well, he has all this 'E.T.' merchandise," Rust told BI. "So it was one of the first things we bonded over and I think we liked the idea of starting a movie with the ending of another movie. We almost got a kick out of the idea of somebody starting the movie and thinking, 'Did it jump to the end, what's going on? Why are they saying goodbye?'"

Though the alien looks very lifelike thanks to CGI, its beam to the ship was done on the cheap — it looks like wires are used to raise the alien into the sky. Rust said there was some discussion in the edit room about whether the filmmakers should go the Ed Wood (famous for campy movies like "Plan 9 from Outer Space") route for the conclusion of the scene. But finally everyone agreed the scene needed a little humor.

"I'm glad we did that because the opening has such an emotional feel. There needed to be a moment to be able to laugh," he said.

2. Rust gave up his favorite joke for this scene.

One of the best scenes in "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" involves a giant Rube Goldberg machine Pee-wee uses to prepare breakfast. For "Big Holiday," Reubens and Rust thought it would be fun to make Pee-wee the ball in the Rube Goldberg machine. This leads to Pee-wee doing everything from flying from his roof on skis to driving a mini-car to picking up an old lady while riding a skateboard on his trip to work.

And one of the big jokes in the sequence is actually Rust's go-to line in real life. Pee-wee asks the old lady, "Have you heard about those new corduroy pillows?" She answers no, and Pee-wee replies, "I'm surprised, because they're making head lines."

"I heard that joke at camp in eighth grade and whenever I have to tell a joke, that's my favorite one to use," Rust said. "So now I can't do it anymore or people are going to think I ripped it off a Pee-wee movie."

3. The snake farm scene worked better than Rust thought it would.

While taking his first-ever holiday, Pee-wee hitches a ride with a traveling salesman who takes him to a snake farm. Pee-wee hates snakes (fans of "Big Adventure" know this all too well), but is convinced to see "the monster" exhibit. He walks into a dark room and gives out a very loud scream when confronted with a giant cobra.

While screening the film at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, Rust was pleasantly surprised by the reaction the sequence got.

"That got a bigger response than I thought it would," he said. "Paul and I both really love crummy roadside attractions. I grew up in Iowa and would go to cheesy places like that as a kid who had never been to Disney Land yet. It was a very poor substitute. Paul growing up in Florida, there were a lot of snake farms and gator farms and stuff like that. So that was the inspiration."

What it's like to eat and exercise like a Victoria's Secret model

$

victoria's secret 2014

It's not easy living like a Victoria's Secret model.

The women famously exercise vigorously and eat carefully planned diets (most of the time)— or purchase extremely pricey meal plans.

But some aspects of their lifestyles may be doable.

Jenna Birch of Brit + Co. cherry picked diet and wellness tips that various Victoria's Secret models have distributed to the media throughout the years.

It's clear that there is no magical formula to becoming a Victoria's Secret model overnight, but not all of their token bits of wisdom are completely worthless — and some can even be adapted for those on budgets.

Birch took on five tips from the models: a version of the famous modelFIT workout, drinking warm water in the morning per Lindsay Ellingson's advice, drinking the questionably nutritious coconut water like Adriana Lima does, snacking on almonds, and running an ice cube over her face at night — Jasmine Tookes told Into The Gloss that's one of her tricks.

The modelFit workout is expensive at $40 a class, but to make the workout more amenable to her budget, Birch executed her own version of the pricey class by purchasing a resistance band at Marshall's for just $7. She said it was "easy to use, but hard to master — and a solid workout to tone without overdoing it."

She found that drinking warm water was easier than drinking cold water.

"If you’re currently drinking enough water and your stomach isn’t upset by sipping super-cold liquid, keep doing what you’re doing. If you struggle to hydrate enough during the day, try tipping back warm water. Whether it’s room temperature or a little heated, both are much easier to swallow," she wrote.

She, too, questioned the nutritious vale of coconut water, but she still felt better after consuming it regularly. "I’m pretty sure this has more to do with a nutrient bump than magical coconut powers — which means you could probably get a similar effect pounding some fiber-filled veggies and fruit," she wrote. The nutrition scientist in me says to just eat your greens and natural sweets. But if I need an extra boost before a big event, I’ll probably grab a coconut water on the DL."

She also discovered that one of the models' most-praised snacks – almonds — are loaded with calories. "Make sure you portion these babies out in single servings, so you’re not popping them like M&Ms. Those calories add up," she wrote.

The trick that appeared to resonate the most with Birch was Jasmine Tookes' ice cube hack. "If you have inflamed skin or large pores, the ice cube trick can be your magic bullet," she wrote.

Working hard and setting goals are general rules to help achieve whatever you're seeking in your career and life.

Whether you're trying to make it in Hollywood, A-list figures in entertainment have faced a brutal industry and the pressure of the limelight to get to the top. And some have shared good tips about success that can be applied to any industry.

Here are eight highly successful celebrities on their essential career advice:

Do what makes you happy, and let the rest take care of itself. —Leonardo DiCaprio

"I’ve been very lucky to have achieved a lot of the things that I dreamt of achieving as a young man," DiCaprio said in an interview with the Telegraph. "But, at the end of the day — and I truly believe this — it is not about achieving great wealth or success, because they don’t bring happiness ultimately. They really don’t. What matters is whether or not you’ve fulfilled the idea of having led an interesting life, whether you’ve contributed in some way to the world around you."

Don't be afraid of failure. —Beyoncé

Even the most successful people are familiar with failure. In a video for her self-titled album, Beyoncé explained how she dealt with loss and learned from it. "The reality is, sometimes you lose," she said. "And you're never too good to lose, you're never too big to lose, you're never too smart to lose, it happens. And it happens when it needs to happen. And you have to embrace those things."

Know your limits. —Lady Gaga

When stopping by Yale, Lady Gaga described how she became unhappy after overextending herself and agreeing to deals she didn't feel strongly about instead of focusing on her own creativity and music. She started saying no instead of agreeing to everything, and found her passion again.

"I feel sad when I'm overworked and I just become a moneymaking machine and my passion and creativity take a backseat," she said. "That makes me unhappy. So what did I do? I started to say no. I'm not doing that. I don't want to do that... And slowly but surely, I remembered who I am."

Miles Teller never even watched 'Star Wars' before auditioning for Han Solo

Miles Teller

Actor Miles Teller is one of the higher-profile actors who has auditioned for the role of young Han Solo in the upcoming spin-off movie about the character's early years.

But directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller seem to be looking for a talent who's not so widely known, as Teller didn't make the shortlist for the role

The "Fantastic Four" star likely won't be losing sleep over it. He has up to four movies that could be coming out in 2016 and was just in this weekend's "The Divergent Series: Allegiant" (though it bombed at the box office). But there's also the fact that it seems Teller isn't a very big "Star Wars" fan.

He admitted while doing the podcast "Happy Sad Confused" that he had never even seen the original trilogy until going in for the audition.

“I had never even seen any of the original 'Star Wars' movies until maybe a month or a couple weeks before my first audition because I was like, 'I should check this out,'" Teller said with a laugh on the podcast. "It holds up. I just love Harrison Ford. I think that’s a great character. I love his brand. I mean so many guys would’ve played that part so wrong and he has humor at the right times.”

Spoken like someone who has just a casual knowledge of the "Star Wars" saga.

Honestly, Teller, who received acclaim for "Whiplash," is too much of an established actor to take on young Han Solo, so his audition could have been as simple as his team saying "just meet with everyone."

The final three actors reportedly in the running for Han Solo are: Alden Ehrenreich, the scene-stealer in "Hail, Caesar!," Jack Reynor, known for starring in "Transformers: Age of Extinction," and Taron Egerton, the star of "Kingsman" and "Eddie the Eagle."

He called Trump a "xenophobic fascist" in an interview with the Guardian earlier in March and referenced Trump's rhetoric in the letter.

"If you listen to the loudest voices out there today, you'd think we're a country that hates Mexicans, hates Muslims, and thinks that committing war crimes is the best way to make America great again," he wrote. "The truth is that the only thing that would prevent America from being great would be to empower these voices."

He wrote that Hillary has been the "one consistent voice" in "all of this clutter."

"As this primary process continues, Hillary could soon have an insurmountable delegate lead and with that, the Democratic nomination," he added. "That would then make her the only grown-up in the room. And if ever there was a time for a grown-up, that time is now."

Clooney and his wife, Amal, are hosting back-t0-back fundraisers for Clinton in April. All proceeds will go to the Hillary Victory Fund.

The letter invited Clinton supporters to enter a contest to meet him, Amal, and Clinton at the Clooneys' home on April 16. Supporters can enter by donating or signing up.

After 2015's "The Ridiculous 6," Adam Sandler returns to Netflix with "The Do-Over."

The second film from his four-movie deal with Netflix, "The Do-Over" features Sandler as a bank manager whose life gets complicated thanks to his friend (David Spade).

The short teaser doesn't show much of the plot, but Netflix's description says, "The life of a bank manager is turned upside down when a friend from his past manipulates him into faking his own death and taking off on an adventure."

Paula Patton, Nick Swardson, and Luis Guzman also star.

The film hits Netflix May 27.

Spotify's lack of music exclusives isn't turning people away — it just hit 30 million subscribers

Big artists like Kanye West and Taylor Swift choose to keep their music off Spotify, yet the Swedish music streaming service keeps adding new users.

Spotify has hit 30 million paid listeners, its CEO Daniel Ek tweeted on Monday. To put that number into perspective, Spotify had 20 million paying subscribers when Apple Music launched last summer.

About 11 million people currently pay for Apple's competing service, which has increasingly fought to secure exclusive deals with artists like Coldplay and Drake.

There's also the Jay Z-owned Tidal to consider, which has a significantly lower user base than Spotify and Apple Music. In an attempt to lure people away from its competitors, Tidal has aggressively gone after exclusive streaming rights to new music, with its most notable get to date being Kanye West's "The Life of Pablo."

Spotify has clearly decided to not play the exclusive game with Apple and Tidal, and in the short term that means some of the hottest new music is either put on Spotify late or not at all. But it's clear that people are paying for Spotify regardless.

Wolf Blitzer grills Donald Trump: Why are white supremacists supporting you?

CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer grilled Donald Trump on Monday over the Republican presidential frontrunner's support from white-supremacist groups.

"Why do you think these various white-supremacist groups are supporting your campaign?" Blitzer asked.

After Trump said that he didn't know anything about the white-supremacist groups that have backed his candidacy, Blitzer told the real-estate mogul about the Anti-Defamation League's list of notable white supremacists who have expressed support for Trump, and pressed him to disavow the groups outright.

"I mean, you're telling me this, but I don't know why. I'm the least racist person you'll ever meet," Trump said.

"You condemn them?" Blitzer said. "You don't want their support?"

"Of course I condemn them. Always, I've always condemned them. I don't want their support, I don't need their support," Trump said.

Trump faced massive backlash last month after he initially refused to disavow former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, who lent his support to Trump. Democrats and some Republicans, like former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, slammed Trump for refusing to immediately denounce Duke.

In a speech in Washington on Monday, Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton denounced Trump for supposedly "playing coy" with white supremacists. She also slammed his proposal to deport the less than 11 million immigrants living in the US without permission.

"What Americans are hearing on the campaign trail this year is something else entirely. Encouraging violence. Playing coy with white supremacists. Calling for 12 million immigrants to be rounded up and deported," Clinton said.

During his interview with Trump, Blitzer also raised a number of Trump's recent media firestorms, including his frequent critical tweets about Fox News host Megyn Kelly, violence at his rallies, and an anti-Trump ad showing women reading his past statements about other women's appearances.
