'10 Cloverfield Lane' thrives this weekend while Sacha Baron Cohen has lowest box office ever

10 Cloverfield Lane BRIGHT

Disney's latest animated feature, "Zootopia," is a hit as it tops the box office for a second straight weekend with an estimated $51.2 million, according to The Wrap.

That gives it a domestic total of over $125 million, an earning pace that's around 50% ahead of what "Frozen" did in the same period.

It's likely "Zootopia" won't become the cultural sensation "Frozen" was as it doesn't have the same catchy songs and focuses on some more mature topics, but it's safe to say that Walt Disney Animation Studios is building up an impressive resume to compete against Disney's other animation house, Pixar.

Out of the new releases this weekend, "10 Cloverfield Lane" is the big winner, coming in second with an estimated $25.2 million. The "spiritual sequel" to 2008's found-footage thriller "Cloverfield," producer J.J. Abrams' plan to keep the project under wraps until a few months ago when it debuted the film's trailer for the first time turned out to work perfectly. And the high praise from critics didn't hurt either.

It will be interesting to see if other studios will take a page from Paramount, which released "10 Cloverfield Lane," and be more on the sly about certain titles when promoting their upcoming slate.

the brothers grimsby sasha markBut not all was positive at the movies this weekend, Sacha Baron Cohen's spy comedy, "The Brothers Grimsby," only took in an estimated $3.15 million this weekend in over 2,200 screens. That's by far the lowest opening ever for a Baron Cohen-developed film.

Rumored to be budgeted north of $80 million by the time Sony had the film (it was originally developed at Paramount), the vulgar comedy is vintage Cohen and according to Deadline the film had an A- CinemaScore among audiences under 25 who saw it. But there was limited marketing for the movie, causing the buzz for "Cloverfield Lane" to completely overshadow the movie.

Sony likely is praying that the film becomes a cult hit when it hits home video/streaming, so at the very least it can break even on the movie.

The real Silicon Valley is so crazy that HBO's 'Silicon Valley' keeps having to re-write lines

silicon valley hbo worried

The valuations of startups in Silicon Valley have been so outlandish the past few years that the creators of HBO’s “Silicon Valley” have had to repeatedly swap in new numbers on the fly to make it seem more “realistic.”

The show chronicles the struggles of a rag-tag (and lovable) bunch trying to navigate the world of startups.

“We were looping in lines to change amounts,” show creator Mike Judge said at a panel on Saturday at the South by Southwest event.

Here’s an example. At one point, there was a line where a character claimed to own 10% of gay social network app Grindr. They realized that if the character actually did own that percentage, he’d “be worth like $100 million,” Judge said. They ended up changing the line to, “I own a very small percentage of Grindr.”

Thomas Middleditch, who plays the show’s lead Richard Hendriks, said that in one episode they had his character turn down a $10 million acquisition offer. They wanted to make it $100 million, but felt like that would be too much. Then Snapchat reportedly turned down a $3 billion buyout from Facebook. That was egg on our face, Middleditch laughed.

“The amounts of money are so stunning,” showrunner Alec Berg said. While writing the show, the team consulted with different venture capitalists to try and find funny challenges the group could have when trying to raise $10 million. They struck out. “They’d be able to raise $10 million no problem,” the venture capitalists told them. “Any VC would give it to them.”

But all that money can be bad for a show, the creators also explained. Judge said he thinks of the cast of “Silicon Valley” as a bunch of outsiders trying to crack the machine and get a win. Once they are the guys with all the money and all the success, the show would sort of end, he said.

Still, Berg said they get pitched plot arc ideas about the lives of Silicon Valley’s rich and famous all the time by tech bigshots. A lot of people think their lives are super compelling, Berg said. But your life as a rich VC guy worth $10 billion is probably going to be boring to watch, he explained.

The creators didn’t address whether they were rooting for a downturn in the Silicon Valley financial climate. But Judge did say they were running out of obstacles to throw in the characters’ paths.

Silicon Valley’s loss might be the show’s gain.

How a gorgeous old movie set in Malta became a tourist destination where couples get married

Popeye 1 final

In 1980, Paramount released the live-action feature film version of “Popeye,” directed by Robert Altman.

Starring Robin Williams as the comic character in his first film role, the movie/musical was a critical disaster and many involved found it to be a disappointment — though it was one of Altman's highest-grossing movies, making $49 million

But the unique set of the town of Sweethaven that was built from scratch for the film in Anchor Bay, the northwest corner of the Mediterranean island of Malta, was a highlight. Created by production designer Wolf Kroeger, its slanted, ramshackle structures made it look like it was pulled right from the comics.

After production wrapped, the set was never demolished, and following some refurbishing, the "town" was turned into a tourist attraction called Popeye Village, which is still open to this day.

Business Insider talked to Kroeger about building the set, and we look at how decades later, the location has become one of the top destinations on the Maltese Islands for family vacations and weddings.

SEE ALSO: Here are your favorite TV shows that are getting renewed for another season

Construction of the village happened in June 1979 and took seven months to complete. "There were a few little fishing houses there, that was it," Kroeger told BI of what stood when the crew showed up.

"We had to bring in materials from outside [Malta]," he said. Lumber came from the Netherlands and shingles for the roofs came from Canada.

Though the film was a bust, Kroeger said the people of Malta loved the set and it was decided that it would not be torn down.

We finally know the meaning of 'Hit Me Baby One More Time,' but it's not what you think

Britney Bless ITLike many superstar artists' signature songs, Britney Spears' "...Baby One More Time" was actually written for someone else, according to author John Seabrook's book "The Song Machine," which explains the process that has created some of the biggest hit songs of the past two decades.

The piece, initially called "Hit Me Baby," was written by Swedish music producer and songwriter Max Martin for TLC, the three-woman American R&B group.

TLC passed.

Singer T-Boz, one-third of TLC, later recalled the group's decision to reject the song.

"I was like, I like the song, but do I think it's a hit? Do I think it's TLC? ... Was I going to say, 'Hit me baby one more time'? Hell no!" she said, according to Seabrook.

Because of its misleading and potentially ominous meaning, "Hit Me Baby" was later tweaked to "...Baby One More Time."

"It's hard to imagine that anyone for whom English is a first language would write the phrase 'Hit me baby' without intending it as an allusion to domestic violence or S&M," Seabrook wrote.

But, he adds, "that was the furthest thing from the mind of the gentle Swedes [Martin and his collaborators], who were only trying to use up-to-the-minute lingo for 'Call me.'"

Apparently, Martin had a misunderstanding of American slang or how the phrase would translate in the song.

After TLC rejected it, Martin sent the tune to Robyn — the Swedish teen-pop queen who has redefined herself as a more adult pop singer — but nothing materialized from that, either.

britney spears

After meeting then 15-year-old Britney Spears, who was newly signed at Jive Records, Martin went back to Stockholm and "worked on the song a little more with her in mind, made a copy, and mailed it to Jive," Seabrook wrote.

By the time Martin's demo reached Jive, everyone thought, "Holy s---, this is perfect," Steve Lunt, an artists and repertoire executive for Jive, told Seabrook.

britney spears Baby_One_More_Time_(album)Seabrook wrote: "'...Baby One More Time' is a song about obsession, and it takes all of two seconds to hook you, not once but twice, first with the sung triplet 'Da Nah Nah' and then with that alluring growl-purr Britney emits with her first line, 'Oh baby bay-bee.'"

As we all know, "...Baby One More Time" became Spears' debut single, and it made her an instant superstar. She sold 500,000 copies just on November 3, 1998 — the day it was released.

The song spent 32 weeks on the Hot 100 chart and still remains Spears' longest-charting single, according to Billboard.

In 2011, Spears' high-school-set music video was voted by Billboard readers the best of the 1990s and was honored in the final episode of "TRL" as the most requested video of all time.

Here's the song that launched Spears' career:

HBO's 'Silicon Valley' tried to include more women, but this real-life tech event didn’t have enough

Silicon Valley

Much criticism has been levied at the HBO comedy "Silicon Valley" for its lack of diversity. All of its main characters, save one, in the first season were white men.

Yet, "Silicon Valley" producer Alec Berg defends the makeup of the cast because it's satirizing the reality of the tech industry.

"Tech is 87% male. VC at the partner level is 96% white and male," Berg said on a panel of all white men at SXSW. "The world that we’re depicting is very much off kilter."

It wasn't just a casting decision. Even shooting scenes in real-world Silicon Valley became a problem for the team.

The crew went to TechCrunch Disrupt, a startup competition also featured in the show, to film footage of the crowd, Berg explained.

During the review process once the footage was woven in, another editor criticized the crowd shots for not featuring any women and blamed Berg for the oversight.

"She said those crowd shots were absurd," Berg told the crowd at SXSW. "Those were real shots of the real place, and we didn’t frame women out. The world we’re depicting is f---ed up."

Even trips to visit tech companies, like Google, didn't help. "That's where we realized it really is 87% dudes," executive producer Mike Judge said. It was the same when they visited the bars in Palo Alto, Judge added.

"Palo Alto is the 'no sense of humor' capital of the world," Judge declared.

There's been debate about whether "Silicon Valley" the show should have more diversity than Silicon Valley the place, but Berg argues that a show made for entertainment not meant to be a "social-action wing" or be a force of change — the show is just satirizing the reality that the tech industry itself needs to take care of.

How the hit show ‘Mr. Robot’ was shaped by its creator’s experience with the Arab Spring

$

0

Mr Robot“Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail says that his family’s experience with Arab Spring was the catalyst that made the final pieces of the show’s main character, Elliot, come together.

"Mr. Robot" revolves around Elliot, a detached programmer who gets involved with a revolutionary hacker group called “fsociety.”

The show has been widely praised for how accurately it portrays certain elements of hacking, especially compared to the many cheesy Hollywood deceptions of that world that have popped up over the years.

At a panel at South By Southwest on Sunday, Esmail said the hacking in “Mr. Robot” was informed by his own “nerdy” adolescence, which included a poor attempt at hacking in college that got him put on academic probation.

“I wanted to tell a story about that culture,” he said, one that he was a peripheral part of. Esmail said he wanted to include all parts of hacker culture, the positives and the negatives, including the loneliness and drug addiction that plagued some of his friends.

That meant that the first stages of the show's development revolved more around getting the character of Elliot right than about the plot. But Esmail said the real crystallization of Elliot’s character didn't come from his childhood, but rather from the experience of Esmail’s family in Egypt during the Arab Spring civil uprisings of 2011.

Esmail, who is Egyptian-American, said that before the Arab Spring he had the angst and social anxiety part of Elliot’s character down. But when Esmail visited his family right after the Arab Spring, he realized that anger didn’t just have to be a negative emotion. It could also be positive.

He saw his young cousins using technology to actually make a difference in society, and made the distinction between “angst” and “anger” in his mind, something that was critical to charting the evolution of Elliot’s character, and the arc of the entire show.

The 9 most popular fan theories for what's going to happen in 'Game of Thrones' next season

daenarys targaryn game of thrones theories

Theories and predictions have been part of the fanaticism for "Game of Thrones" since before it premiered on HBO.

But next season, all bets are off. Fans will only partially be able to lean on what they've read in the books as the show surpasses George R.R. Martin's published novels. That has put the theory mill into overdrive.

What will the producers come up with for season six when it arrives April 24? There are very few indications of where they're going next.

So fans have been combining what they know to be true from the show with what hasn't appeared yet from the books, then piecing together what actors have been saying in interviews, photos from the set, and comparing everything against the newly released season-six trailer.

From hidden blood ties to big conspiracies, here are the most popular "Game of Thrones" fan theories:

Warning: TV show and book spoilers ahead.

Jon Snow is alive — or will come back to life.

Yes, theorizing about Jon Snow (Kit Harington) surviving the Night's Watch attack from the end of season five has become an internet-wide sport. But if you knew the theory coming up next, then you'd know why we have to establish the theories that bring him back to life.

There are several ways that Jon Snow may still live another day: First, he somehow survives the attack on him. Second, he's able to warg into his wolf, Ghost. Third (and seemingly the most possible after seeing the full trailer), Melisandre (Carice van Houten) brings him back to life. Fourth, he's reborn in fire when the Night's Watch tries to burn his body. Fifth, he returns as an ice zombie, better known as a White Walker.

Jon Snow is a Targaryen.

There is a theory that Jon Snow's real parents are Lyanna Stark (sister of Ned) and Rhaegar Targaryen. That would make him Daenerys' (Emilia Clarke) nephew. This theory has huge consequences for the story if it's true.

First, being a Targaryen gives him a line to the throne. But he has to be alive in order to chase it. It also means, referring back to the resurrection idea, that he could have a rebirth after being engulfed in flames similar to Daenerys.

Source: Gamesradar.com

The three-headed-dragon theory says Tyrion is not who we think he is.

The three-headed-dragon theory states that three Targaryen descendants will rule the dragons. The first is Daenerys. The second depends on the theory that Jon Snow is really a Targaryen. So who's the third?

Many fans believe that Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) completes the trio. According to their thinking, Tyrion was the product of an affair between the Mad King and Tywin’s wife, Joanna Lannister.

For proof, they look to Tyrion's phsyical differences, beyond the dwarfism, from the other Lannisters. Also, things that were said by his father that could sound like a man denying his dwarf son in embarrassment, but can also be seen as that of a man who knows that he didn't father Tyrion.

For example, Tywin (Charles Dance) denies Tyrion the inheritance of Casterly Rock, saying: “Men's laws give you the right to bear my name and display my colors since I cannot prove that you are not mine.”

And then just before Tyrion kills him, the dying man’s final words are, “You are no son of mine.”

Kanye West is planning on releasing two more albums this year, but he's still working on "The Life of Pablo."

A Redditor discovered new changes to "Famous" as of Sunday that were rolled out without announcement.

User JayElect found that lyrical changes were made around 1:23 ("She be Puerto Rican Day Parade wavin'" becomes "She in school to be a real estate agent") and a rhythmic transition at 1:49.

The user also noticed a slight change around 1:01.

"Sounds like Nina Synomes [sic] vocals are layered under Rihanna's," JayElect wrote. "Rihanna's vocals in general have a lot more reverb. Not as ear piercingly loud as she was before."

West debuted his seventh album during a listening party and performance piece at Madison Square Garden in New York City on February 11.

On March 9, West tweeted about finishing the final mixes on "The Life of Pablo," but didn't state which songs he'd be changing.

Earlier this month, West declared that he would no longer release CDs and instead focus on streaming only in the form of Tidal exclusives.

Kanye West revealed his favorite song of 2015, and it's a big surprise

We may already be deep into March, but timing has never stopped Kanye West before. And so he's just let the world know what he thinks was the best song of last year.

Kanye went on Twitter to enlighten his followers:

Well, that's a surprise. If you were going to say Kanye's favorite song of 2015 was by Kanye, sorry, you're out of luck. He passed over his own releases (even he seems to have forgotten about "All Day") in favor of Justin Bieber's hit "What Do You Mean?"

This has to make Justin Bieber very, very happy. The artist rebounded from scandal with arguably his most commercial and well-liked album yet in "Purpose," with dancehall-inflected songs including "What Do You Mean?" that took him to the top of the charts.

Kanye has said at various times since "Yeezus" that he's not really making music for radio anymore. But if his favorite song of 2015 is any indication, he might still wish he was dominating charts — and ears — like Bieber.

Victoria's Secret model describes her breakdown over pressure to have the 'perfect' body

Victoria's Secret Angels are known for their svelte physiques. They train very intensely in the days leading up to the outrageous annual Fashion Show.

But that doesn't mean that they're devoid of insecurities.

In fact, former Victoria's Secret Angel Erin Heatherton recently posted on Instagram about how she, too, has struggled with body image.

"The breakdown to breakthrough moment in my life has allowed me to become the truest version of myself. In my moment of 'failure,' I stood in the face of adversity," she wrote in the post. "I was struggling with my body image and the pressures to fulfill the demands of perfectionism upon me. I am not perfect."

The breakdown to breakthrough moment in my life has allowed me to become the truest version of myself. In my moment of “failure,” I stood in the face of adversity. I was struggling with my body image and the pressures to fulfill the demands of perfectionism upon me. I am not perfect. Through this struggle, however, I found the strength to love myself. I stood in my power. I thought of one of my favorite quotes, “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a men’s character, give him power” - Abraham Lincoln. I look back on that moment now, and I embrace it. This feeling I once perceived as “failure” was, in truth, a powerful awakening for me to stand behind my purpose in life. I stepped away from hiding behind a fabricated version of myself. I no longer put actions behind my fears and insecurities. I made a choice to redirect my energy to be a catalyst for change. To create a channel for women to become the truest versions of themselves, along with me. (Stay tuned for more...) It's presumable she's talking about the strenuous demands of being a Victoria's Secret Angel.

She continued in her post:

"Through this struggle, however, I found the strength to love myself. I stood in my power. I thought of one of my favorite quotes, 'Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a men’s character, give him power' - Abraham Lincoln.

In the end, if you aren’t being true to yourself, then what the f*** is the point #rebelwacause#empowerment#womensempowerment#empoweredbyyou."

It appears that Heatherton is embarking on a new cause to promote women's empowerment. She posted a second photo on Instagram with the same #empoweredbyyou hashtag.

BY @renatamblack: "Being adopted at a young age, life to me, and everything that came with it occurred to me as, “lucky.” This came with the awareness that not everyone was as luck as me. In my decade long effort to empower women out of poverty and into self-sufficiency via microfinance, I have not been the overnight success I thought I deserved to be. In this pursuit of magic, the path has been my teacher. Living out your purpose is the highest luxury and it is a privilege that is earned as I have learned. Throughout this tenacious journey dotted by insecurity I always come back to the why I do what I do and think, “Be who you were before all that stuff happened that dimmed your fucking shine.” I turn insecurity into relentless drive and think of my favorite quote from Rosa Parks, “ You must never be fearful about what you are doing when it is right" BY #renatablack #rebelwacause #empoweredbyyou #womensempowerment

Caitlyn Jenner is a dedicated conservative.

In a clip from Sunday's "I Am Cait," Jenner and her friends discuss political candidates, when Jenner is asked for her views on Donald Trump.

"I'm not a big fan because I think of his macho attitude, I think he would have a hard time with women when he doesn't even realize it," she says. She quickly adds, "And it doesn't mean he wouldn't be good for women's issues. I think he would be very good for women's issues.

"I don't think he's out there to destroy women or take things away or do any of that kind of stuff," she says of Trump.

Kate Bornstein asks Jenner to choose between Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump.

"Oh my God, yes, I would never ever ever vote for Hillary," Jenner says. "We're done. If Hillary becomes President, the country is over."

She later calls Hillary a "f---ing liar" and a "political hack."

Jenner's friends strongly disagree with her views and argue back.

Earlier this month, Jenner told the Advocate that she likes Ted Cruz, even with his views on the transgender community.

"I think he’s very conservative and a great constitutionalist and a very articulate man," she said. "I haven’t endorsed him or anything like that. But I also think, he’s an evangelical Christian, and probably one of the worst ones when it comes to trans issues.”

But she did say she would be his "trans ambassador."

She said, “Yes, trans ambassador to the president of the United States, so we can say, 'Ted, love what you’re doing but here’s what’s going on.'"

After letting out some details about his character in the next season of "Game of Thrones" — a danger for a show about which the slightest wink or nod from an actor will become worldwide news — 73-year-old British actor Ian McShane had some choice words for the fans who are mad at him for revealing alleged spoilers.

“You say the slightest thing and the internet goes ape,” he told the Telegraph. “I was accused of giving the plot away, but I just think get a f---ing life. It’s only tits and dragons.”

This is on the heels of McShane telling Pop Goes the News that (spoiler coming, get ready) the character he plays in "Game of Thrones" season six is a priest who's "responsible for bringing somebody back that you think you’re never going to see again."

Our money is on The Hound.

McShane, who is best known for his gruff characters like on the HBO show "Deadwood," or more recently in "John Wick," went on to tell the Telegraph another detail about his character.

(Alert: another spoiler ahead.)

“I wasn’t sure whether I could commit [to the role]," he said, "but then they said it would only be for one episode, so I said, 'So that means I must die at the end of it. Great, I’m in.’”

So if you've gotten this far, you now know McShane is in season six of "Game of Thrones," he plays a priest for one episode, and in it he resurrects a character we never thought we'd see again.

Probably time for HBO to stop having McShane do press.

John Oliver explains why Apple handing over the 'master key' to the FBI could be dangerous

Encryption John Oliver final

The main topic "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" tackled Sunday night was the hotly debated iPhone encryption issue, specifically related to the FBI demanding that Apple let it into the phone of San Bernardino shooter Rizwan Farook, who, with his wife, killed 14 people on December 2.

While showing both sides of the argument, the segment highlights why Apple is against a "master key" that bypasses security features.

One reason is it would make products vulnerable to hackers. There's also the likelihood that if Apple capitulates to US authorities, then China and Russia would want the same access. And if Apple opens the door for the FBI, who's to say other US authorities wouldn't want the same treatment for other cases? Oliver's segment points out that one Manhattan District Attorney has 175 iPhones with potential evidence from serious crimes, including murder, that he can't open.

It's a precedent that could open a Pandora's box. Or as Oliver puts it in the segment:

"Think of the government like your dad,” he said. “If he asks you to help him with his iPhone, be careful. If you do it once, you’re going to be doing it 14 times a day.”

Simmons, 67, has rarely been seen in the past few years, and a report from the New York Daily News emerged recently claiming that his housekeeper, Teresa Reveles, was controlling him.

"That's just very silly,'' Simmons said. "Teresa Reveles has been with me for 30 years. It's almost like we're a married couple."

He told Guthrie that he "wanted to be a little bit of a loner for a while" and explained that he was recovering from a knee injury.

"I just sort of want to take care of me,” he said. “I just really don’t want to do anything. I just don’t want to be traveling anymore. It certainly has taken its toll on me.”

He expressed his gratitude for those who are concered.

"All the people that are worrying about me, I want to tell them that I love them with my whole heart and soul and that not to worry, Richard’s fine," he said. "You haven’t seen the last of me — I’ll come back, and I’ll come back strong.”

Simmons' rep responded to claims in a statement to People Sunday, calling them "untrue and preposterous."

"Richard, after 40 years of being in the spotlight, is now simply taking a break from the public eye and working behind the scenes to continue to help those millions of people worldwide in need of his assistance and on several projects to be announced soon," the statement said.

Guardians Of The Galaxy

Ever since "Iron Man" was released in 2008 and kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel has taken over the box office.

In the past eight years, Marvel Studios has put out well over 20 movies that span multiple studios — from Disney to 20th Century Fox.

"Deadpool," which came out on February 12, has been shattering records since its opening weekend. It has grossed over $679.1 million worldwide.

In anticipation of the upcoming "Captain America: Civil War" and "X-Men: Apocalypse," we ranked the 12 best Marvel movies we've seen since Robert Downey Jr.'s era-defining "Iron Man."

12. "The Wolverine" (2013)

The hugely entertaining "The Wolverine" stays true to the characters' roots while telling an unconventional superhero story that involves Yakuza gangsters. There's a lot of great action here, such as a train chase that is as memorable as it is implausible. What really makes this stand out is Hugh Jackman, who has committed to this character for so long. He's a hero who is immortal and haunted by the prospect of death.

11. "The Amazing Spider-Man" (2012)

Spider-Man didn't need to be rebooted, but Sony really didn't want to lose this franchise. While nothing can top what Sam Raimi created — even if "Spider-Man 3" didn't do anybody any favors — the first reboot had a lot of great stuff to offer. It has a whole new Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) who's less of a geek. And Parker created the web blasters this time, making it just slightly more faithful to the comics.

10. "Ant-Man" (2015)

With Edgar Wright originally onboard, "Ant-Man" was looking to be one of Marvel's best. Indeed, Joss Whedon even called it Marvel's best script yet. But when Wright and the studio couldn't see eye to eye, the director dropped out.

Replacement director Peyton Reed had high expectations to live up to. He crafted a superhero story that goes through the standard motions of an origin story while also managing to be a fun heist movie with great performances by Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas. We will never know what Edgar Wright's "Ant-Man" would have looked like, but the version we ended up with isn't so bad.
