Meryl Streep responds to movie diversity backlash: 'We're all Africans really'

meryl streep berlin international film festival jury

When asked about the lack of diversity in the all-white jury for the Berlin International Film Festival, Meryl Streep, who's serving as this year's jury president, responded by telling reporters that "we're all Africans really."

She elaborated, "There is a core of humanity that travels right through every culture, and after all we're all from Africa originally. Berliners, we're all Africans really."

Streep is leading the seven-member jury for the first time, and though she offered the above response for the question, she did say she is committed to including members "of all genders, races, ethnicities, religions."

"This jury is evidence that at least women are included and in fact dominate this jury, and that's an unusual situation in bodies of people who make decisions," she said. "So I think the Berlinale is ahead of the game."

The Berlin International Film Festival runs from February 11 through February 21.

The lack of diversity in the film industry is not a new topic of discussion, and backlash to the all-white acting nominee field at the Oscars this year has spurred a large debate. In response, the Academy has vowed to double the amountof minorities and women in its membership ranks by 2020.

'Deadpool' is the most unique superhero movie in years — here's why you need to see it

deadpool hanging out

As many prepare for the battle between Team Captain America and Team Iron Man in “Captain America: Civil War,” out in May, for now we're taking a detour in the Marvel universe as we’re introduced to one of its most complex characters, Deadpool.

Led by Ryan Reynolds as the character, the new movie adaptation of the comic book, in theaters February 12, is the first look at a Marvel character from an R-rated perspective. Filled with graphic violence and a lot of bad language, 20th Century Fox's effort brings a harder-edged feel to the superhero genre than what we're familiar with from the Disney releases (“The Avengers,” “Iron Man,” etc.).

But there’s more to why “Deadpool” is one of the most unique superhero movies ever made.

We’ve come up with 5 big reasons you should see it:

(Warning: spoilers ahead.)

SEE ALSO: 20 modern classic movies everyone needs to watch in their lifetime

1. Ryan Reynolds making fun of himself

The Deadpool character is a former Special Forces operative who, after an experiment, possesses accelerated healing powers. True, that doesn’t sound much different from any other superhero origin story, but it’s the psychotic persona of Wade Wilson (aka Deadpool) that sets him apart. To harness that on the big screen, Hollywood has called on Mr. Sarcasm himself, Ryan Reynolds.

But “Deadpool” goes a step further than having Reynolds throw a fun line or two. To really portray the character correctly, it had to be brutal. And Reynolds obliged. He plays on his box-office bomb as Green Lantern in 2011, once being People’s Sexiest Man Alive, even taking jabs at his own acting talents.

It’s fun to see Reynolds can take a joke (or five).

2. Lots of pop-culture references

Don’t fret if you’re not up on your “Deadpool” comics knowledge. The movie is made for both the super-fan and the novice. One of the pleasures is taking in the references to pop culture that are filled throughout. From a Salt-N-Pepa song to Deadpool throwing out lines about Negasonic Teenage Warhead looking like Sinéad O’Connor (and then there’s the scene after the end credits; don’t worry, we won’t give it away), it’s a fun ride for the '80s-and-'90s-nostalgic audience.

One of the biggest threads through the movie is Deadpool’s love for the band Wham!, specifically the group's hit “Careless Whisper.”

3. Breaking the fourth wall

Most superhero movies are focused entirely on the action, but Deadpool is fully aware there’s an audience looking at him, and he can’t help but chat it up. This leads to some enormously entertaining moments, like explaining how he met his roommate, Blind Al, or giving us his backstory while being pummeled by Colossus. And as anyone familiar with Ryan Reynolds' style of comedy knows, he is very comfortable doing that.

Here are the ratings that have Viacom execs worried about their ailing TV networks

All eyes have been on Viacom for a while now. But the scrutiny has become intense recently as the company underwent a contentious change in leadership, another sagging quarterly report, and a subsequent double-digit percent drop in its stock price all within the past week.

What's happening at Viacom

Last week, Viacom CEO Phillipe Dauman was elected the board's new chairman after Sumner Redstone, 92 and in declining health, stepped down from the position. Redstone's daughter, Shari Redstone, opposed Dauman's appointment and was the only vote against him. Her father, who remains a member of the board, was among those who voted for him. There's a glimpse into the drama at the top of Viacom.

Sales in the filmed entertainment division fell by 15% as the company put out fewer releases, according to ReutersIts movie production has seen more misses than hits, though it does have Oscar nominee "The Big Short" going for it.

But Viacom's TV offerings — which include MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, Spike, and TV Land — aren't faring much better. In its most recent quarter, Viacom reported a 3% decline in revenue from its media networks, including TV. The company reported a 6% drop in revenue to $3.15 billion.

Once synonymous with youth and pop culture, Viacom's flagship channels like MTV and Comedy Central seem to have misplaced their finger on what their viewers want.
MTV, for example, has been trying for years to create a stable of scripted offerings that resonate with young people and has failed more often than it has succeeded. The network has also seen an exodus of executives in the past year, including the exit of its president.

Business Insider took a close look at Viacom's cable network ratings from the fourth quarter of 2013 through the fourth quarter of 2015 with the help of Nielsen ratings research (Logo was excluded because it didn't meet minimum reporting levels for Nielsen).

The results give a snapshot of Viacom's TV difficulties over the past several years and one explanation for its internal struggles:

SEE ALSO: How Spike's new 'Lip Sync Battle' landed its A-list celebrity contenders and became a breakout hit

Looking at the ratings for total viewers of Viacom's cable channels over the past two years shows that they've all experienced a drop in viewership.

The three biggest decreases in total viewership were:
1. Comedy Central
-35.8%
2. TV Land -34.6%
3. Nick-at-Nite -28.1%

Viacom's most stable network for total viewership is its country-music station: CMT -7.7%

Here's a snapshot of just the last full quarter of primetime ratings available to us from Nielsen. This gives us a sense of which Viacom networks have the biggest total audience currently.

Top 3
1. Nick-At-Nite– 962,000
2. Spike TV– 725,000
3. VH1– 660,000

Bottom 3
1. CMT
– 287,000
2. MTV
– 454,000
3. TV Land
– 513,000

Usually, most cable networks sell ads for the higher age bracket of 25-to-54-year-olds. But taking into account the younger viewership of many of Viacom's cable networks, we decided to compare them at the 18-to-49-year-old demographic most often used by the broadcast networks.

These numbers give us a sense of which networks are hitting broad, advertising-friendly audiences.

Top 3
1. VH1– 419,000
2. Comedy Central– 375,000
3. Spike TV– 354,000

Bottom 3
1. CMT
– 125,000
2. TV Land
– 154,000
3. MTV– 292,000

BB-8 originally spoke actual words — here's how the 'Star Wars' droid's voice was made

Ben Schwartz reddit

Soon after the first screenings of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," word began to spread that actors Bill Hader and Ben Schwartz ("Parks and Recreation") were credited as "voice consultants" for BB-8.

Recently, Schwartz did a Reddit AMA and gave a whole rundown of his experience. It turns out there was even written dialogue for BB-8 before it was turned into beeps, and it took time to nail the droid's sound.

Here's what Schwartz said:

I was lucky enough that when JJ Abrams was making the new Star Wars film, he came home on a little break and he said, “Hey I have this new droid called BB-8, and I want him to have personality. You know, everybody loves R2-D2, but I want to put him in situations where he can feel warmth, and he can be funny, and he can do all these things.” Because he had these big scenes with Rey – and I can talk about it all finally – all these big scenes with Daisy Ridley’s character, and John Boyega’s character, and so the process was at the beginning. We wrote real dialogue for him.

So, there’s recordings of me overseeing this. JJ would show me scenes, and I would say real dialogue as BB-8 in response to whatever Rey or people were saying. And then, the goal was to give that to LucasFilms and they would turn them into beeps and boops. So they tried it, and when it came back, I feel like it felt like… you can feel like it was a human being turned into beeps and boops. So then they gave me a synthesizer, and this great sound guy named Robby Stambler – when we were in the room for hours, I would call us “The Beautiful Boys,” because we both looked terrible. Nah, he’s a great guy. But Robby Stambler, amazing sound guy, and we did this thing where I would take this microphone that was hooked into a computer, and I’d literally try to do the beeps and boops.

First, we tried it with words, and it didn’t work. And then I tried to do the beeps and boops. And in the end, we did a bunch and bunch of scenes, and I was very fortunate and got to see the movie beforehand, and all this stuff and really work with it. I don’t know how much of those are in it, but I was told by the editors that all the dialogue that I did for the film was used while they edited. So, if Rey, Daisy Ridley’s character, is having a scene with BB-8, they would edit with my dialogue in there to know when to cut to back and stuff like that. And I was so excited, because I don’t know how much percent of my actual voice is in there, hopefully there is some, but I know that all the editors were so kind to me in saying that it really helped with the way they edit, and the cadence.

It'd be awesome if Lucasfilm ever released the recordings of the English dialogue Schwartz and Hader used while creating BB-8.

Update: You can stream the performance live on Tidal starting at 4 pm. You don't have to subscribe to the service to watch, though the stream seems to be freezing for many users.

--

After three previous announced titles, Kanye West has finally settled on a name for his seventh album: "The Life of Pablo."

West posted the newest title and track list to Twitter Wednesday night, less than 24 hours before Yeezy Season 3, his live performance of the album at Madison Square Garden on Thursday. It will be streamed in theaters around the world.

The album was originally known as "So Help Me God," before it became "SWISH," then "Waves," the most recent name ditched by the rapper.

The track list differs from what he previously posted. There's a new song, "Freestyle 4," and "No More Parties in LA,” his collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, is no longer to be found.

On Tuesday, West tweeted that anybody who guessed the title would get tickets to his show Thursday night and a free pair of Yeezys, his incredibly popular sneakers for Adidas.

Some people actually did guess it, so now it's up to West to follow through.

 UPDATE:

West revealed the cover art for his newest album in a tweet, as well as lyrics to "Father Stretch My Hands," a song featured on the album's track list he posted earlier. It is unknown whether the lyrics are for Part One or Part Two.

Kanye West is live-streaming the Madison Square Garden release of his new album, TLOP, on Tidal. But not everyone can stream it.

Scores of people have taken to Twitter and Facebook to vent about their inability to watch the stream. If you are one of these people, there is one trick you can try. The stream seems to function if you set it on the lowest quality video: 240p. Any higher and you might experience technical difficulties.

Taylor Swift calls out Kanye West for 'misogynistic' lyric about her

It was the lyric that got the most attention when Kanye West released his new album during an event Thursday.

"I made that b---- famous," he says on the song "Famous," referring to a "Taylor" who is pretty clearly the country turned pop singer whose VMA acceptance speech West notoriously interrupted in 2009.

At first, there was speculation that Taylor Swift might be in on the reference, but that quickly ended when Swift's publicist released a statement, as Variety reports, saying the singer did not approve the song and in fact cautioned West against a "misogynistic message" for his new album, "The Life of Pablo."

"Kanye did not call for approval," Swift's representative said. "But to ask Taylor to release his single Famous on her Twitter account. She declined and cautioned him about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message. Taylor was never made aware of the actual lyric, 'I made that [b----] famous.'"

The dismissive lyrical reference to Taylor Swift, as expected, has caused pushback online. Swift's younger brother, Austin, filmed himself throwing out his Yeezy Boosts in response.

Kanye West defends vulgar lyric about Taylor Swift: 'It's actually something Taylor came up with'

Kanye West took to Twitter on Friday morning to defend a song released on his new album, "Famous," that makes an unflattering reference to Taylor Swift.

"I made that b---- famous," he says on "Famous," referring in the lyrics to a "Taylor" who is clearly Swift and saying he might still sleep with her.

Swift, through a publicist, has already denied giving her blessing for the track and says she instead cautioned West against such a "misogynistic" message.

Now West is saying that isn't true at all. He said he had an hour-long conversation with Swift about the lyric and she "thought it was funny" and gave approval.

In the tweets Friday, he went on to say the basic idea came from something he said Swift told a mutual friend about West's making her famous when he notoriously interrupted her acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2009.

Here are Kanye's tweets about the song:

The new 'Netflix for pirated movies' might leave you vulnerable to hackers

Johnny Depp pirateTorrents Time is a plugin that lets you stream torrents of movie and TV shows directly in your web browser, without using outside software, but it might leave you open to attack.

Torrents Time was built by the people who made Popcorn Time, and their new web browser plugin can make streaming from torrent sites like The Pirate Bay as easy as watching Netflix. In other words, if Popcorn Time was the "Netflix for pirated movies," Torrents Time lets any torrent site become its own pirate Netflix kingdom.

But Torrent Time's ease of use might come at a price, according to Gizmodo. Gizmodo points out that developer Andrew Sampson, and people on the /r/Piracy subreddit, have raised concerns that Torrent Time's code has some major security holes. These critics claim these flaws could not only let outsiders interfere with the data you are downloading using the plugin, but also potentially reveal your IP address in the process.

Torrents Time has fired back, calling Sampson's analysis bogus. "Despite Sampson’s hollow statements, Torrents Time does not enable attackers to control your computer! It’s safe, user-friendly and fun," the team wrote, according to The Next Web.

But potential pirates should still tread carefully.

Kristen Wiig winged it as Super Bowl champion Peyton Manning on Thursday's "Tonight Show," and it was a valiant effort since she's clueless about football.

"I'm still so tired from Sunday," Wiig feigns as the Denver Broncos quarterback. "I tried really hard."

Fellow "Saturday Night Live" alum and the show's host, Jimmy Fallon, played along. When he asked her what she was thinking in the final seconds of the game, Wiig answers, "I'm thinking, uh, I'm so far from the line."

That may have been the best answer she was able to give. She gets the final score wrong, has no idea who was named MVP, gets Manning's college wrong, and says his major was "environmental science." (The correct answers are 24-10, Von Miller, University of Tennessee, and speech communications, respectively.)

And just to prove how unprepared Wiig was to play Manning, Fallon took her through a lightning round of trivia on the player and a test of her football-throwing skills. It isn't pretty.

What it’s really like to fly in ‘zero gravity’ like Ok Go did in their new music video

Ok Go zero G video

In case you missed it, Ok Go's new music video is literally out of this world. Ok, not literally, but it was shot in "zero gravity."

The pop band, known for its ambitious music videos, filmed its latest single "Upside Down and Inside Out" in a Russian reduced-gravity plane, which flies in a way that produces weightlessness, Rolling Stone reported. To prepare for the feat, the band trained for three weeks at ROSCOSMOS, Russia's equivalent of NASA.

"What you are about to see is real. We shot this in zero gravity, in an actual plane, in the sky. There are no wires or green screen," the video's opening reads.

What it's like to fly in 'reduced gravity'

Several years ago, I had the chance to fly in a reduced gravity plane myself, as part of NASA's Microgravity University, a program where teams of college students design experiments and fly them aboard a special airplane nicknamed the "vomit comet."

And it's not called that for nothing — the human body doesn't always take kindly to floating around, and many people (not me, thankfully) get violently sick. Luckily, they give you anti-nausea drugs, and an air sickness bag, just in case.

In fact, Ok GO lead singer and guitarist Damian Kulash told Business Insider that making a video is reduced gravity is "not so promising on the first flight simply because it's so hard to do anything. In one flight, what you learn is it makes you nauseous, and it's really hard to control yourself."

The plane flies in arcs called parabolas, and since you and the plane are falling at the same rate, you don't feel like you're experiencing gravity. NASA refers to these flights as "reduced" or "micro" gravity, because you experience a mix of partial Gs at the top and bottom of each parabola known as dirty air.

On my flight, we did about 25 parabolas, and each one gives you only about 20 to 30 seconds of weightlessness. But Ok Go's 3-minute video appears to be one continuous take, thanks to some clever editing.

We were technically doing the zero-G flights to test our experiment — a system for manipulating droplets of fluid in zero G using sound waves — but I managed to get in a bit of play time. Still, 30 seconds in zero-G goes by surprisingly fast. Before you know it, the pilot is throttling back the plane to pull out of the dive, and you get the delightful experience of pulling two "Gs."

In Ok Go's video, the band members seem to effortlessly tumble about the plane, doing flips, aerial push ups, and other forms of synchronized acrobatics.

The showrunner behind 'Vinyl' and 'Boardwalk Empire' on crafting HBO's great dramas and working with Martin Scorsese

$

Terence Winter Dimitrios Kambouris Getty

Terence Winter is best known for his work on “The Sopranos” and creating “Boardwalk Empire,” but the 55-year-old writer and TV showrunner wasn't just handed those gigs.

Like most in Hollywood, he had to start from the bottom, and he built off his early jobs to become one of the most sought-after writers in not only TV but also movies — his adaptation of Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street” earned him an Oscar nomination.

Leading up to the Sunday premiere of his new series, "Vinyl," which he created with Scorsese, Mick Jagger, and Rich Cohen, Winter talked to Business Insider about his landmark career so far.

SEE ALSO: Justin Theroux talks about writing 'Zoolander 2' with Ben Stiller and why it's not like the original

“The Cosby Mysteries”

One of the first writing jobs Winter scored when he got to Hollywood in the mid-1990s was writing episodes for the blink-and-you-missed-it crime series “The Cosby Mysteries.” That’s right, Bill Cosby had a show in which he played a retired New York criminologist who would solve murders in his spare time.

“That time in my career I was just thrilled that people were offering me to do jobs,” Winter said.

According to Winter, Cosby couldn’t be any nicer to work with, but the legendary comedian's style wasn’t the right fit for the murder-mystery genre.

“One of the conventions of the murder mystery is that the hero at the end sort of runs down very specifically how he caught the murderer,” Winter said. “So we’d have these very specific speeches written where Bill would explain how he knew who the murderer was, but instead he would go off on these comedic riffs that often had nothing to do with how he caught the murderer. So we would get the footage back and go, 'Um, what?' We would have to loop dialogue somewhere else in the episode so the ending would make sense. It was kind of a challenge.”

“Xena: Warrior Princess”

Soon after “The Cosby Mysteries,” Winter grabbed another job, writing for a new show called “Xena: Warrior Princess.”

The show that would become a global hit wasn’t necessarily what Winter wanted to write about, but the experience of seeing a show come together from the ground up was immeasurable.

“I was there when they were in the very early stages of developing the show and trying to figure out who the characters were. It was fascinating to observe that,” Winter said. “The challenge for me was that is a very specific world, but that’s where work ethic comes in. You’re not connected to this material but you’re hired to do a job, now figure it out.”

His next job would finally get him into his dream material.

“The Sopranos”

The HBO masterpiece put Winter on the map as he came on as one of the writers for its second season in 2000. He would go on to be an executive producer on the show in years to come.

But that wouldn't have been possible if the show’s creator, David Chase, had just gone by Winter’s credits.

“He didn’t care what your credits were. He could have gone, ‘Oh, you were on "Xena"?’ But he didn’t care,” Winter said. “He was interested in me as a person, the stories I had, what made me tick. It’s something to this day I do when I hire people. I’m not interested in someone’s credits. Let me see who you are and tell me a story of your life.”

James Corden turned down hosting 'The Late Late Show' until CBS convinced him

James Corden

CBS really had to win over James Corden before he agreed to host "The Late Late Show."

The British actor and singer said he turned down the job offer twice before signing on to replace Craig Ferguson.

CBS CEO Les Moonves, recently elevated to chairman, and now-former president Nina Tassler approached Corden about the hosting job after seeing him in the Broadway hit "One Man, Two Guvnors.

"I was really reticent. I said no, and then it went quiet for a few weeks," Corden told men's style site Mr. Porter in a new interview. "Then I said no again."

There was an element of risk for Corden in leaving the UK for the late-night job. Not quite a name here in the US at the time, Corden was very popular across the pond. He had written and starred on the sitcom "Gavin & Stacey" for three seasons; hosted the British equivalent of the Grammys, the Brit Awards; won a Tony award and a BAFTA, the Brits' highest award for film and TV. Also, he'd have to postpone writing a show for HBO and a return to Broadway.

It would take some convincing from Corden's friend, former "America's Got Talent" judge and CNN host Piers Morgan, who said, "It's a fierce and unforgiving place, but you'll regret not trying."

So, Corden reconsidered.

"I thought, it won’t come round again," he said. "In five years' time they won’t go, 'Oh, let's go back to that guy who turned us down.'"

Corden debuted on "The Late Late Show" in March 2015. He still trails behind Seth Meyers' "Late Night" in the ratings, according to Nielsen research, but he takes pride in the show's more than 600 million views on YouTube, fueled by the very viral "Carpool Karoake" segments in which Corden sings to the radio with a famous musical guest. Elton John, Adele (see above), and Chris Martin have recently appeared on the segment.

“Good numbers if you’ve been on 'Saturday Night Live' for 10 years,” he said of the YouTube views.

After debuting what was supposed to be the finalized version of his seventh album, "The Life of Pablo," Thursday night, Kanye West has made more changes.

He took to Twitter Friday morning to say that the album is being mastered and will be released later in the day.

He also posted a picture of his new track list, which includes six tracks not featured on the list he posted Thursday. Apple's reportedly doing an original scripted TV show with Dr. Dre, and it'll have 'no shortage of violence and sex' (AAPL)

Apple has bankrolled a scripted TV series starring Dr. Dre, according to a story by The Hollywood Reporter on Friday.

The show is called "Vital Signs" and will star Beats cofounder Dr. Dre. Six 30-minute episodes have reportedly been ordered, and all will be released in one batch.

The show is described as a "dark drama with no shortage of violence and sex," an unusual step for the company, which has cultivated a "PG" reputation through what kinds of content it permits on its iTunes store and App Store.

For example, Beats 1, Apple's online radio station, bleeps out curse words. A scene filmed earlier this week reportedly involves "simulated sex."

It will be the company's first original television show, and the report indicates that it will be distributed through Apple Music.
