Ryan Reynolds hints he may have leaked the 'Deadpool' footage that got the movie made

"Deadpool" hits theaters February 12, but the highly-anticipated raunchy comic-book film took 11 years to make and only officially happened after test footage leaked a few years ago.

In an interview with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday's "Tonight Show," star Ryan Reynolds, who played the antihero when he appeared in 2009's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," explained the extensive process of putting the film together — and why it all happened because of a leak that, well, may be his responsibility.

“It was the worst relationship I’ve ever been in,” Reynolds said. “On-again, off-again. Occasionally we sleep together and it just causes more pain. And then somehow, someway, we got married.”

A script, written by "Zombieland" writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, was developed six years ago and leaked online, which prompted Fox to film test footage. That ended up being put away for four years, but a little less than two years ago, that footage "leaked accidentally onto the Internet."

"Accidentally?" Fallon asked.

"Here's the thing, the 'Deadpool' fans freaked out and overwhelmed Fox and Fox basically had to greenlight the movie," Reynolds said.

Though he isn't owning up to leaking the footage, Reynolds doesn't exactly deny it.

"I know that one of us did it,” the actor said. “There’s four of us: me, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Tim Miller, the director. We all said at the beginning that somone should leak it, so the idea was planted, but I’m 70-percent sure it wasn’t me.”

'Girls' actress Lena Dunham says she has a painful reproductive problem 1 in 10 women suffer from

Lena Dunham

Actress, writer, and director Lena Dunham, of "Girls" fame, publicly announced this week on Instagram that she has endometriosis — a painful and chronic condition.

"I just wanted to let you know that, while I am so excited for Girls to return on Feb 21, I won't be out and about doing press for the new season," Dunham wrote in the Instagram post.
"As many of you know I have endometriosis."

Endometriosis is a condition that affects women and refers to when tissue that would normally line the uterus instead grows outside of the uterus, sometimes cropping up on the ovaries, behind the uterus, or on the bowels or bladder (though it can also grow on the nose, lungs, arms and legs).

It affects 6.3 million women and girls in the U.S. alone — about 1 in 10 women of reproductive age.

Like the normal lining of the uterus, the excess tissue thickens, breaks down and bleeds each menstrual cycle. But since it has no way to flush itself out of the body, it gets stuck, and can form ovarian cysts or irritated tissue that hardens around the organs.

As Vox reports, the condition is really hard to diagnose. It involves a surgical procedure called a laparoscopy, in which doctors make a small cut in the stomach and insert a tiny camera to look for scar tissue on the pelvic organs.

The most common symptoms include pain in the abdomen, lower back, or pelvis, especially during menstrual cramps, during or after sex, or during bowel movements or urination; infertility; and heavy periods.

Other symptoms include fatigue, diarrhea, constipation or nausea. Some women do not have any symptoms at all. Dunham, however, isn't one.

While Dunham didn't describe the specifics, she reported that she's going through a difficult time with the disorder:

"I am currently going through a rough patch with the illness and my body (along with my amazing doctors) let me know, in no uncertain terms, that it's time to rest," she wrote.

Cause is not completely understood

The causes of endometriosis are not completely understood, but it may result from something called retrograde menstruation, where menstrual blood flows back up the fallopian tubes instead of out of the body.

Another possible cause is if immature cells in the abdominal lining turn into endometrial tissue (uterine tissue outside the uterus). Yet another possible cause can be from surgery or from to an immune system failure.

The condition runs in families, so there may be a genetic component.

There is no cure for endometriosis, but it can be treated with medications and surgery.

Doctors may recommend over-the-counter pain meds like ibuprofen or naproxen. Hormonal therapy (in the form of pills, patches, or injections) may slow the growth of new endometrial tissue.

Finally, surgery is an option to remove some of the endometrial tissue without damaging the reproductive organs, or patients can have a complete hysterectomy.

Beyoncé performed her new song "Formation" at the Super Bowl and made quite the statement. But Bey's background dancers and band members created even more buzz on social media.

At the request of a Black Lives Matter protester, the ensemble held up a sign that read "Justice 4 Mario Woods," a 26-year-old black man who was shot as many as 15 times by five police officers while carrying a knife.

HBO's streaming plan whiffs with only 800,000 paying subscribers

game of thrones

HBO Now, the company's cable-free streaming service, only has 800,000 paying subscribers.

On Time Warner's fourth-quarter earnings call, HBO CEO Richard Plepler confirmed the number, which was short of analyst predictions of 1 to 2 million.

HBO Now launched in April, and lets you pay $15 per month to get HBO a la carte, no cable subscription required.

Netflix says it has around 75 million subscribers (as of January), and Hulu has previously reported 9 million subscribers (as of last April).

On the call, Time Warner tried to put the HBO Now subscriber growth in context, stressing that some content that is particularly suited for digital platforms, like Vice's daily news show and Jon Stewart's upcoming project, has not yet debuted.

After an analyst referred to HBO Now as having "only" 800,000 subscribers during a question, Plepler objected to the characterization of the number as deserving an "only."

HBO Now is a big part of the company's bid to become "ecosystem agnostic," as Plepler puts it. That means that HBO will live wherever you are: your computer, phone, tablet, smart TV, Apple TV, Roku, and so on.

An unlikely retailer is about to break ground in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition

Lane bryant

Lane Bryant is continuing to challenge the apparel industry.

Women's Wear Daily (via Racked) has reported that the plus-size clothing company will debut its latest campaign in Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue. According to the report, the campaign, called "This Body," proudly proclaims statements such as "this body was made for rocking denim."

It stars a bevy of plus-size industry stars, such as Denise Bidot and Ashley Graham, the latter of whom was featured in a Swimsuits for All ad in Sports Illustrated's swimsuit edition last year.

Lane Bryant has been hailed for its body positive campaigns, particularly its "I'm No Angel" campaign, which was a direct blow to Victoria's Secret and its criticized "Perfect Body" campaign. (Its apparel, however, still leaves much to be desired amongst consumers, as evidenced by the retailer's failed #AskLaneBryant Twitter chat this past December.)

Sports Illustrated has also announced that curvy model Ashley Graham will be featured in its actual swimsuit edition — an obvious promotion from her ad last year.

There's a huge upside to being a nominee in one of the major Oscar categories this year, even if you lose.

That honor, of course, is the "swag bag" that's given to each contender in the best actor, actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, and director categories.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, and more will walk home with one of them, valued at more than $200,000 — if they're willing to report them to the IRS, since gifts of this size are taxable.

Known as "Everyone Wins" prizes and provided by Distinctive Assets, a company not associated with the Academy, they include some swanky and even bizarre items: trips to Japan, Israel, and Italy, $275 toilet paper, and something known as a "Vampire Breast Lift."

Vevo wants to become the next MTV — and its new Apple TV app is a step in that direction

$
0
0

VevoVevo wants to become the next MTV, and has released a new app for Apple TV that pushes, incrementally, in that direction. The company also released a new Android app as well.

Many people know Vevo as the company that provides all the official videos to YouTube (yes, that little icon at the bottom). But since 2013, when it launched its first app, Vevo has tried to be more than that.

CEO Erik Huggers gave a glimpse of Vevo's vision in a press announcement for Thursday’s app releases. “We continue to invest in what we believe is the premium platform for music videos and related original content,” he said. This platform he’s talking about sounds a lot like MTV before it went all-in on reality TV.

What's changed

Vevo has been quietly building a multi-platform brand apart from YouTube for a few years, though it hasn’t quite captured the public’s imagination. But as television streaming boxes like Apple TV, Chromecast, and Amazon Fire TV become more popular among young cord-cutters, Vevo has a chance to become a true “channel” in a way it's not on the smartphone.

Because it’s built around music videos, Vevo could have a natural tvOS advantage over audio-focused rivals like Spotify and Pandora — an advantage that doesn't extend to mobile. Even on a laptop, using YouTube to search for the next Vevo clip feels more natural than letting a Vevo app choose. But streaming boxes could be a place for Vevo to build a lasting brand. Just put on the app and lean back.

It’s not surprising, then, that head of product Mark Hall says he’s much more excited about the Apple TV app than the Android one. It feels like a place Vevo could make progress.

What Vevo needs to do

Hall says the key to Vevo’s success as its own entity lies in harnessing the power of its massive catalog (which Vevo has courtesy of its major label founders).

“Right now, Vevo is great if your taste is aligned to the Top 40,” Hall says. But the service has over 160,000 videos, and Hall says he wants to unlock that potential by making Vevo’s apps smarter and more personally relevant to users. This is a sentiment we have heard echoed at streaming companies like Spotify and Pandora.

Vevo is always careful with how it talks about YouTube, and Hall is no exception to the rule. Google owns part of Vevo and YouTube drives the vast majority of its traffic. But it’s clear that things like Apple TV have Vevo imagining a brand identity separate from YouTube — though YouTube will always be a big partner.

“We are at 1% of our product ambition,” Hall says. But it’s a start.

Craft beer-maker BrewDog pokes fun at Guinness with a low-budget parody of its iconic surfers ad (DGE)

BrewDog beer horse swimming pool

Scottish craft beer specialist BrewDog has released a parody video of Guinness' iconic surfers and horses advert.

The craft brewery's new drink, Jet Black Heart, is a stout which directly takes on Guinness.

The 1998 Guinness ad had a massive budget and is still regarded by many as one of the greatest ads ever. The video features surfers taking on massive waves with terrifying CGI horses galloping over them.

In BrewDog's version, the company's two founders, Martin Dickie and James Watt, go to their local swimming pool in a pantomime horse costume.

"Big beer advertising is b------"

Watt explained the company's decision to mock one of its biggest rivals in a press release: “Big beer advertising is b-------. If you have to spend millions of pounds on ad campaigns to get people to drink your beer, the brewing is probably being neglected. And anyway, Martin had a horse costume left over from the Christmas panto. So we thought, let’s save our money for making epic beer that tastes of something and stands for something.”

In the release, BrewDog said it marked the three year anniversary of an incident they refer to as "blackmail" by Guinness owners Diageo (more details below.)

Scroll down for a side-by-side comparison of the two ads:

Jimmy Fallon unveiled his own Bernie Sanders impression, and it's spot-on

bernie sanders jim fallon tonight show nbc

Jimmy Fallon is jumping on the Bernie Sanders bandwagon.

After the Vermont senator's win in the New Hampshire Democratic primary, Fallon unveiled his own Sanders impersonation on Wednesday night.

"I'm speaking tonight to claim victory in the New Hampshire primary over she who must not be named," Fallon's Sanders says, referring to Hillary Clinton with the phrase used for the "Harry Potter" villain Voldemort.

Fallon, who we're used to seeing inhabiting Donald Trump this election season, will definitely have his Sanders impression compared to that of Larry David — who unleashed it again last weekend on "Saturday Night Live."

Fallon definitely takes it over the top compared to David, who also has the help of looking like the politician. But both capture Sanders' populist leanings.

bernie sanders jimmy fallon tonight show nbc 2

"We won and I feel like a million bucks," Fallon's version of Sanders says. "A million bucks, which of course means that I will now evenly distribute myself among the middle class."

He then ends with a timely reference to lyrics from Beyoncé's new song, "Formation": "Right now, I want to celebrate with my wife. And let's just say that afterward, she will be taking my a-- to Red Lobster."

Sacha Baron Cohen stunned Jimmy Kimmel with a scene from his new comedy that's too graphic for TV

the brothers grimsby sacha baron cohen mark strong

We've seen Sacha Baron Cohen recently in brief cameos like "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues," and more serious fare like playing Thénardier in "Les Misérables," but we haven't seen a comedy written by Cohen since 2012's "The Dictator."

Thankfully, a comedy from the mind behind Borat and Ali G is finally here: "The Brothers Grimsby."

Mark Strong ("Kingsman: The Secret Service") plays an MI6 agent whose brother (Cohen) is a slacker who loves his English football club more than anything. But the brothers must join forces for a new spy assignment.

Here's the latest trailer. The movie opens in theaters March 11.

And just to drive home the point that audiences are in store for a very graphic comedy that's in keeping with Cohen's work, Jimmy Kimmel on Wednesday night showed his audience a clip from the movie that is so raw (we assume) that he could only film their reaction watching it.

Bruce Springsteen wrote an autobiography about his rise to fame coming out this year

Born to Run bruce springsteen

After seven years of working on his authobiography, Bruce Springsteen is releasing the book later this year.

Springsteen began working on the aptly titled "Born to Run" — the title of his third album and hit song — after he performed at the Super Bowl halftime show in 2009 with the E Street Band, according to his publisher Simon & Schuster.

In a press release, the publisher said Springsteen dives into his childhood growing up in Freehold, New Jersey, as well as "his relentless drive to become a musician, his early days as a bar band king in Asbury Park, and the rise of the E Street Band."

The book will surely go over the life and death of longtime E Street Band member Clarence Clemons, who passed away in 2011.

“Writing about yourself is a funny business,” Springsteen writes in his book. “But in a project like this, the writer has made one promise, to show the reader his mind. In these pages, I’ve tried to do this.”

He released an illustrated book, "Outlaw Pete," in 2014.

"Born to Run" will be released internationally September 27, 2016.

Stephen Colbert to Bernie Sanders: Is there a 'similarity' between you and Donald Trump?

Sanders Colbert late show

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) sat down with "The Late Show" host Stephen Colbert on Wednesday night in advance of the sixth Democratic presidential debate Thursday.

The exchange started off with Sanders elaborating on why he believes he won such high support in the coveted 18- to 29-year-old category of voters in the New Hampshire primary (Sanders won 83% of them).

Sanders explained:

With all of this technology and productivity in our economy, how is it that young people are likely to have a lower standard of living than their parents, while almost all new income and wealth is going to the top 1%? They're not dumb, and they're saying, "Hey, we want a fair shake as well."

Colbert responded that Sanders' answer sounded like "class warfare."

He continued:

If you're saying that most of it's going to the top 1%, and they want fairness, how do you achieve that fairness?

Because the top 1% has a lot of influence with the government. They're not just going to give that up. They're going to fight you tooth-and-nail. And I'll tell you how I know that: I'm in the top 1%. Matter of fact, to hell with that, the top 1% parks my car. I'm way above them. Those guys, and girls, are going to fight you very hard.

Sanders answered by explaining that he thinks that we've reached a point in society where Americans are upset with the "status quo."

The conversation pivoted when Colbert asked if Sanders thought that there was a similarity between Sanders and and the winner of the New Hampshire Republican primary, Donald Trump

Bill O'Reilly, who appeared on "The Late Show" Monday night, told Colbert that Sanders and Trump are "really the same guy," just with "different haircuts."

"There are people who are trying to choose between you and Trump." Colbert said to Sanders. "Why would that be? You don't seem like two sides of the same coin."

Sanders replied:

I think Donald Trump's supporters are angry. They're working for longer hours for lower wages. They're people who are really worried about what's going to happen to their kids. But I think what they have done is responded to Trump's false message, which suggests that if we keep Muslims out of this country, or we keep scapegoating Latinos or Mexicans, that somehow our country becomes better. I think that's a false solution.

Colbert concluded the interview by saying that they were going to commercial break to sell products for some "enormous corporations."

Zoolander

After 15 years, Derek Zoolander is back.

"Zoolander No. 2," the sequel to the 2001 cult-hit comedy, is in theaters Friday and features some of the original cast reprising their roles.

When the "world's most beautiful people" are being assassinated, the only people to call are ex-models Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) and Hansel McDonald (Owen Wilson).

Stiller created the dimwitted character of Zoolander for a short film that aired during the 1996 VH1 Fashion Awards. Another short film was made for the Fashion Awards the following year and later developed into the feature-length film.

"Zoolander" featured cameos from celebrities including Posh and Baby Spice, Donald and Miliana Trump, Billy Zane, Mark Ronson, and David Bowie. And while some players are back for the sequel, a number of other celebrities — including Justin Bieber, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kristen Wiig, and Penelope Cruz — are making cameo appearances in the second film.

Here's a look at the original cast 15 years later:

SEE ALSO: Zac Efron and Anna Kendrick are in a hilarious trailer for 'Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates'

THEN: Ben Stiller was already a comedy star before he turned his "Zoolander" short films into a feature film. He plays Derek Zoolander, a model who finds himself in the middle of an assassination conspiracy. Though it was Stiller's third time directing a feature, it was his first full-length screenplay, which he cowrote with Drake Sather and John Hamburg.

NOW: Stiller has since appeared in a number of comedies and has continued to direct and produce films. He's reprising his role in the sequel and also serves as a cowriter and director.

THEN: Owen Wilson made his film debut in Wes Anderson's "Bottle Rocket" (1996) and landed roles in films such as "Armageddon" and "Shanghai Noon" before playing a rival model, Hansel, in "Zoolander."
