'Paranormal Activity 4' Doesn't Live Up To Its Scary Potential—Here's Your Box-Office Roundup

$

tyler perry alex cross

The fourth time for "Paranormal Activity" is not as kind as before.

Though the film's weekend gross would be great for any other low budget production, the latest installment of the paranormal cult following saw less than either of its previous sequels opening weekend.

"Argo" saw a very small dip during its second week in theaters, while "Taken 2" still continued its massive box-office run.

And, Tyler Perry should stick to dresses as his serious stint in "Alex Cross" disappointed. The film saw his lowest box-office opening gross ever with him as a lead.

Out of the top ten this week include Colin Farrell's "Seven Psychopaths" and Emma Watson's "The Perks of Being a Wallflower."

Here are this weekend's winners and losers at the box office:

10. Joseph Gordon-Levitt's "Looper" narrowly makes it into the top ten with $4.2 million. The time travel film is faring better overseas ($75 million) bringing its worldwide total to $132.8 million.

9."Frankenweenie" lives to see another week in the top ten earning $4.4 million in week four. Tim Burton's black-and-white animated film has earned $40.2 million worldwide.

8. Universal's "Pitch Perfect" takes in $7 million in week four. The "Glee"-like comedy is on track to hit the $50 million mark in the coming week.

7. Kevin James' "Here Comes the Boom" only falls two spots during its second week earning $8.5 million. The film is still behind his earlier movies, "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" and "Zookeeper."

6. With a new horror film out, "Sinister" drops three spots with a gross of $9 million. The low budget ($3 million estimated) film earned Summit $31.9 million in its two weekends, which is good considering its latest debut with Perry didn't fare so well.

5. Tyler Perry should stick to comedy. Summit's "Alex Cross," featuring Perry and Matthew Fox ("Lost") as a detective and serial killer respectively, underperformed, making a third of its estimated $35 million budget with $11.7 million.

4. Liam Neeson's "Taken 2" settles for fourth with $13.4 million. After three weeks, the sequel to the cult favorite has earned $280.4 million worldwide.

3. Adam Sandler's "Hotel Transylvania" narrowly beats Neeson's action thriller earning $13.5 million. In four weeks, the film has earned $187.3 million worldwide.

2. "Argo" finally beat "Taken 2" in its second week, but its 16.6 million weekend wasn't enough to take the box office. After two weeks, the film is slightly more than $1 million shy of its estimated $44.5 million budget.

1. Though "Paranormal Activity 4" manages to take the top spot with $30.2 million, it earned roughly $5-10 million less than expectations after "Paranormal 3" managed to net $52.5 million opening weekend. Overseas, the film didn't fare much better with a total of $26.5 million.

What's better than Peter Jackson's long-awaited "Hobbit" coming to theaters in December?

"The Hobbit" plus a cameo from Stephen Colbert

Yes, Middle-earth is getting a visit from the host of "The Colbert Report," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Word is the Comedy Central host won't appear in this winter's flick; however, he will be in one of the later two films.

The host also previously hinted at a role in the films during his interview in the November issue of Playboy, mentioning his visit to the set in New Zealand.

Peter Jackson invited me to the set last year," said Colbert. "I flew out and watched them shoot some scenes and went to some locations. I saw a 25-minute cut, and it was amazing."

Colbert's known to be a huge fan of "The Lord of the Rings" series. (Jon Stewart once played a recording Colbert made on the history of Viggo Mortensen's character Aragorn during an interview on "The Daily Show.")

Colbert's role hasn't been revealed yet; however, considering the man reads Elvish (the Tolkien language of Middle Earth), we're hoping to see him among the elves of Rivendell.

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" heads to theaters December 14.

This Coke Ad, In Which Ordinary Folks Are Suddenly Forced Into A 007 Foot Chase, Is Utterly Charming

man thinking coke zero

The new Coke Zero "Skyfall" video is yet another textbook case of how to create a successful viral ad.

It's a simple idea, followed by an incredibly complicated execution: How do ordinary people react if they're suddenly forced into a James Bond-style foot chase through a crowded European railway station?

The spot was created by viral masters Duval Guillaume Modem, best-known for their Belgian TNT effort earlier this year, which featured unsuspecting villagers who find themselves in the middle of gunfights, runaway ambulances, and lingerie-wearing women on motorcycles.

Following a similar formula for Coke, Duval Guillaume Modem set up digital vending machines in an Antwerp train station to offer travelers free tickets to the launch of "Skyfall."

There's just one catch: the free tickets are on platform 6, and the punters are given only 70 seconds to get there.

As they race across the station, the befuddled commuters find themselves confronted with just the sort of nonsense that crops up in the movies — two guys carrying a plate glass window at just the wrong moment, a fruit vendor spilling an avalanche of oranges, and so on.

It turns out that the guys who take up the challenge handle the assignment with a fair amount of grace:

Meet Steven Spielberg's Parents In This Revealing '60 Minutes' Profile

Steven Spielberg mom

Steven Spielberg, along with his divorced parents, sat for in-depth interviews on Sunday's "60 Minutes" before the November 16 release of his upcoming film "Lincoln."

And, for the first time ever, viewers got an intimate look into the personal life of the Oscar-winning director, his anti-Semitic childhood and the strained relationship with his father that has influenced every one of his films.

Here's what we learned:

  • He still gets nervous when directing: "It's just the kind of level of anxiety not being able to write my life as well as I can write my movies."
  • Steven's mother, Leah Adler, was a homemaker and his father, Arnold Spielberg, a workaholic engineer. "Anything he wanted, we did," said his mother. "Steve really did run us. He called the shots." Added Spielberg: "My mom didn't parent us as much as she sort of big-sistered us. She was Peter Pan. She refused to grow up." As for his dad: "I missed my dad a lot growing up, even though we were together as a family. My dad was really a workaholic. And he was always working."
  • Spielberg was bullied as a kid for being Jewish. "I was a nerd in those days. Outsider. Like the kid that played the clarinet in the band and orchestra, which I did." After the neighborhood kids started chanting "The Spielbergs are dirty Jews," Steven got revenge by sneaking out of his room one night to smear peanut butter on their windows.
  • As a result of the bullying, Spielberg long denied his Judaism, saying "I often told people my last name was German, not Jewish. I'm sure my grandparents are rolling over in their graves right now, hearing me say that."
  • But everything changed at age 16, when Steven's father gave him a video camera and eventually "found a way to accept myself. ... I found that I could do something well."
  • When Spielberg was 19, his parents got divorced after his mother fell in love with one of his father's best friends. "It's still a mystery to me, but even though my mother was like an older sister to me, I kind of put her up on a pedestal," Spielberg said. "And my dad was much more terrestrial, much more grounded, much more salt of the earth. And for some reason, it was easier for me to blame him than it was to someone who I was already -- exalted."
  • 1982's "E.T.," centered on a boy and his two siblings being raised by a single mom, was based on Spielberg's parents' divorce—and would become a common theme in all of his future films.
  • Spielberg didn't think anyone would watch 1994's "Schindler's List." "I did everything I needed to do to tell the story the way I thought the story should be told, to give it as much integrity as I could, never expecting it to make a dollar." (The film went on to make more than $321 million at the global box office and win two Oscars for best picture and director.)
  • Spielberg researched for his upcoming film "Lincoln" for over 12 years and it is partially inspired by his reconciliation with his father. "He was the father of a nation in need of repair and in a sense the movies I've made recently have reflected the positive relationship that my dad and I have enjoyed for 20-25 years."
  • "One of the worst things that happened to me was my voluntary fallout with my father and then the greatest thing that ever happened to me was when I finally saw the light and realized I needed to love him in a way that he could love me back."
  • Although divorced, Spielberg's parents are still very close. His mother went on to marry his father's good friend, who has since died, but his father and his second wife are still close with his mother.
  • Spielberg decided to hold off on releasing "Lincoln" until after the November election because he didn't want the film to become a tug of war about party politics. "I think the film is very relevant for today. It's about leadership and telling teh truth, how you feel."

Lawsuit Looms As Lebanese Authorities Are Not Happy With 'Homeland'

Homeland-Showtime-Claire-Danes

Not everyone is happy with "Homeland."

Showtime's six-time Primetime Emmy winner isn't sitting well with Lebanese authorities.

The scene in question showcases militants shouting in Arabic for people to get out of a crowded street to make way for the world's top jihadi in what is supposed to be Beirut.

Instead, the scene was filmed in Tel Aviv, Israel, which is leaving some Beirutis angry claiming the show's portrayal is misleading.

In particular, Lebanese Tourism Minister Fadi Abboud told the AP he's upset the location in Beirut was depicted as violent when it's the complete opposite.

"It showed Hamra Street with militia roaming in it. This does not reflect reality," he said. "It was not filmed in Beirut and does not portray the real image of Beirut."

Abboud went on to say a lawsuit may be considered.

"The information minister is studying media laws to see what can be done," he said.

A childhood friend of Israeli "Homeland" co-creator Gideon Raff has said the show hasn't had the opportunity to shoot in Beirut.

Take A Tour Inside The Filming Locations Of The Latest Bond Film, 'Skyfall'

james bond skyfallThe only item more impressive than 007's stunts in the James Bond films are the locations in which they're filmed.

We went through Sony's production notes for "Skyfall" due out November 9 to take a look at exactly where the film takes place.

Originally, six countries in total were supposed to be featured in the film; however, due to reported budget cuts in January, shooting was to stay primarily in the UK.

Production used 31 different sets on eight sound stages at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire alone for filming.

Despite the cutbacks, the film was able to shoot on location in Scotland, China, and Turkey as well.

There are no real spoilers; however, if you want to spare yourself of any Bond related news prior to the "Skyfall" release next month, we suggest you turn away.

The pre-title sequence for "Skyfall" is shot in Turkey's cities of Istanbul and Adana. Below is home to Istanbul's Eminonu Square ...

It's the third film to be shot in Istanbul after "From Russia with Love" and "The World Is Not Enough."

... which Bond races in a high-pursuit chase. An area consisting of more than 250 market stalls was created by the art and props department this scene.

Filming at Istanbul's Grand Bazaar was only allowed on Sundays when it was closed due to the harm that could come to its 400,000 daily visitors.

Brad Pitt's Painfully Awkward Chanel No. 5 Ad Spawned This SNL Spoof

Brad Pitt's pseudo-intellectual ad for Chanel No. 5 is so excruciatingly uncomfortable that it was practically begging to be turned into a SNL spoof.

This weekend, the show kindly obliged.

Although the original spot is practically a spoof itself — Pitt spouts  koan-like truisms including "every journey ends, but we go on" — these skits, starring Taran Killam, are a must-watch.

The first sketch imagines what the original shoot might have looked like. "I've been talking to myself for like two hours straight and I'm starting to sound insane," Killam says.

This next one is our favorite and shows what the ad would have looked like were Pitt shilling Taco Bell instead.

Then things got weird with an ad for dog condoms:

The final spot showed the Pitt-impersonator incoherently rambling on about Dr. Zizmor, the subway doctor. (He also does chemical peels!)

In case you forgot, here's the original Brad Pitt ad for Chanel No. 5:

Borgo EgnaziaAs we reported on Friday, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel said "I do" at an Italian resort with friends and family on October 19.

The wedding supposedly took place at Borgo Egnazia, a five-star hotel with stunning views of Roman ruins and the Mediterranean sea.

E! Online first reported that the wedding potentially set the couple back $6.5 million. The cost factors in if Timberlake and Biel rented out the entire hotel, paid for their guests' flights, and hired security staff, not to mention helicopter tours for their guests to take in the surroundings.

Welcome to the gorgeous Italian resort, Borgo Egnazia. It's located close to the town of Puglia as well as the Mediterranean Sea.

The resort sits on roughly 50 acres of land, and includes a golf course, beach club, and spa.

Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake reportedly booked the entire resort, including the 63 rooms and 28 villas.

Editor Steps Aside After Investigation Into Sex Abuse Of 200 Minors At BBC

Jimmy Savile

In the biggest media scandal out of Britian since Rupert Murdoch's phone hacking ordeal, BBC "Newsnight" editor Peter Rippon has taken a leave of absence after the corporation's mishandling of a probe into the alleged sexual abuse of minors by late BBC host Jimmy Savile.

About 200 potential victims have come forward as part of a formal criminal investigation into the alleged sexual abuse of minors by "Top of the Pops" host Jimmy Savile and others.

"Today, BBC 'Newsnight' editor Peter Rippon became the first executive to step aside over the corporation’s handling of the situation," reports Deadline. "Rippon’s suspension comes ahead of a potentially damning report to air tonight on 'Panorama,' another BBC investigative series, about his decision to kill a 'Newsnight' piece on Savile last year."

While some staffers say the piece was an editorial brief to find failings with prosecutors’ prior handling of the complaints against Savile, "Newsnight" journalist Liz MacKean says on "Panorama" tonight that “The story we were investigating was very clear cut. It was about Jimmy Savile being a pedophile."

"The 'Panorama' piece reportedly includes suggestions that Rippon was subject to pressure from BBC bosses to ditch the investigation so Savile tribute shows could air at Christmastime without controversy," reports Deadline. "Savile, who had hosted 'Top Of The Pops' and wish-granting show 'Jim’ll Fix It,' had passed away just a few months earlier."

Rippon tried to defend his decision to axe the program by writing a blog post earlier this month explaining his action.

Rippon wrote in the blog that “we had no evidence against the BBC,” but the corporation now admits Newsnight’s reporters had been told Savile abused girls on BBC premises.

Two other facts the BBC disputes from Rippon's post are his statements that “we are confident that all the women we spoke to had contacted the police independently already” and “no new evidence against any other person that would have helped the police.”

The BBC confirmed Monday that Rippon "is stepping aside with immediate effect from his post while the review by Nick Pollard, the former head of Sky News, into the management of Newsnight’s investigation, is carried out."

The BBC also issued some corrections to Rippon's blog post and announced "On the basis of material now available, it is apparent from information supplied by the Newsnight editor and program team, that the explanation by the editor in his blog of his decision to drop the program’s investigation is inaccurate or incomplete in some respects."

Why I'm One Of 100,000 People Lining Up For This New Movie App

$
0
0

moviepass main image

After living in New York for a few years, the only thing I find it impossible to adjust to is shelling out $13 to $17 every time I want to see a new movie.

So when Business Insider's Kevin Smith raved about MoviePass, a new app that lets users see as many movies as they want for a monthly fee, I was intrigued –– and more than a little dubious.

Membership fees vary depending on your region ($25 to $40), and average about $30 per month, according to CEO Stacy Spikes.

With the pass, you gain access to the smartphone app (iPhones only, with an Android version due in November) and a membership card issued by the company.

The whole service relies on geo-location technology, which won't allow any ticket to be reserved unless you're within 100 yards of a selected theater. Once you've got the green light, you swipe your MoviePass card at the theater's kiosk and receive a ticket just like any other customer.

Is it worth the cost?

That all depends on how much of a cinephile you are. At an average $30 per month, you'd shell out $360 per year. The average ticket price in the U.S. is hovering just under $8 these days, according to the National Association of Theater Owners, which would mean sitting through at least 45 films (three to four per month) to justify the cost.

If you're still on board, here are a few other things to consider before joining the 100,000 people on the app's waiting list.

Expect some glitches. No matter what kind of state-of-the-art technology is behind a new product or service, there are bound to be glitches. I haven't had the chance to test drive MoviePass, but a friend-of-a-friend told me she recently had trouble loading the app outside of a theater. I asked Spikes how they've handled this issue so far, and he was confident in MoviePass' customer service team.  Agents are on hand until 3 a.m. EST each day to troubleshoot. For customers who wind up buying a ticket out of pocket, the company will issue a refund to the credit or debit card linked to their account.

Not easy to share. Unfortunately, MoviePass isn't as easy to share with friends and family as, say, Netflix or Amazon Prime. Since the app is linked specifically to your cell phone and prepaid debit card, you need both in order to secure a ticket. Unless you're cool with tagging along with your friend to pick up their ticket or giving up your phone for a few hours, you're out of luck.

2-D only. For now, the MoviePass only covers one 2-D film per day.

No rewards––yet. Though a rewards program is not yet in place, Spikes assured me they will be working on one that is similar to movie theater "club" cards, which typically offer free snacks and movie passes to theatergoers who earn points.

The verdict. It's a toss up. Personally, I'm sold, but that's only because I see about five to six films per month and could justify the cost. For the 60 percent of Americans who rarely go to the movies, I'd recommend taking a pass on MoviePass.

Jay-Z BeyoncéBlue Ivy may be the youngest person ever to grace the Billboard music charts, but looks like the A-list baby will have to wait to start her own clothing line for fellow fashionable tots.
After Blue Ivy's birth in January, proud parents Jay-Z and Beyoncé filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in late January to trademark their daughter’s name.
The plan hit a set back, however, when a Boston event planning company also called “Blue Ivy” sued for the right to keep its name, which it has been operating under since 2009.
Veronica Alexandra, the 32-year-old owner of Blue Ivy, said she holds no ill will against he musically-inclined couple, telling The Boston Globe she "highly respects" them.
"I can't be frustrated with something I think is going to bring me to produce and define my brand even more, which is financially exciting in itself and intellectually exciting as well," Alexandra told the paper. "It's like they caused me to create more opportunity for myself."

denny's hobbit menu

In a bid to lure "Lord of the Rings" diehards into its booths, Denny's is rolling out a Hobbit-inspired menu in to tie-in with the film's Dec. 14 release.

Elvish conversation classes should plan to relocate to the chain starting Nov. 6, when the restaurant introduces a menu with items including "Gandalf's Gobble Melt," the "Hobbit Hole Breakfast," "Frodo's Pot Roast Skillet," and a "Shire Sausage" stuffed "Build Your Own Hobbit Slam."

Ad Age reported that J.R.R. Tolkien's hobbits' eating tendencies of two breakfasts (and five other meals) a day were conducive to Denny's model. The restaurant's CMO, Frances Allen, told Ad Age, "We just felt with the two breakfasts that whole notion of comfort eating and comfort food [were a fit]."

On top of a television spot and billboards, the chain will begin a blogger initiative by reaching out to LOTR and Hobbit-themed blogs. We at BI will watch the fans' reactions and report back.

Erwin Penland and Interpublic's Gotham are working with Denny's on the campaign.
