Sam Futerman and Anaïs Bordier were living two very different lives. Futerman, raised in New Jersey, was an LA-based actress who had starred in movies like "Memoirs of a Geisha" and TV shows like "Kroll Show." Bordier was raised in Paris and studying to be a fashion designer in London.

Neither of them knew that they had an identical twin.

"We were identical twins, both born in Korea, and adopted by separate families. She grew up in France, I grew up in New Jersey," Futerman told INSIDER in an interview. "She saw me in a YouTube video, and sent me a message on Facebook."

One of Bordier's friends had discovered one of Futerman's YouTube videos and realized that the two looked remarkably similar, and the two of them eventually connected through social media.

Futerman, who made a hit YouTube video about what it's like to be adopted, decided to turn the surreal experience into a documentary called "Twinsters," which she co-directed with Ryan Miyamato. "Twinsters" is unique in that Futerman basically decided to turn the camera on at all times in order to candidly capture her connection with her newfound twin.

"I made a conscious decision to not alter anything. Not set anything up. Not plan anything," Futerman said.

This lead to a lot of great scenes, like the moment that the two of them officially found out that they were twins through a DNA test: their reaction is less one of shock and more one of "duh."

"We just kind of had to sit back and let it unfold. It's like life, I guess. You don't know what's gonna come," Futerman said.

The two of them are separated once again, but closer than ever.

"Twinsters" is now streaming on Netflix.

Dr. Matthew Schulman has been doing a lot of lips lately. He thinks this has something to do with Kylie Jenner.

"After recent social media posts by Kylie Jenner, that's when we really saw an uptick in young girls coming in for lip filler," Schulman said. "In the past, most of the patients tended to be 25 to 35, but after Kylie Jenner was doing her lip challenge, I started getting a lot of requests from 17-year-old girls, 18-year-old girls, really young girls coming in wanting to do lip filler, which, you know, is kind of a case-by-case basis, whether to do something on someone so young."

In April, Jenner's lips inspired the #KylieJennerChallenge in which teens used shot glasses to plump up their lips. They then posted photos of the results on social media.

Schulman says that fillers are safer than the shot glass method.

"I think it's a lot safer than the alternative, where people were potentially causing damage to their lips by sucking on a shot glass in order to make their lips plump up," Schulman said.

Brandon Stanton is at it again.

Stanton is the man behind "Humans Of New York," a popular photo project that puts Stanton and his camera on the streets of New York City and beyond.

Earlier this year, Stanton took a photo of Vidal Chastanet, a 13-year-old from Brownsville, Brooklyn, which has the highest crime rate in New York City. The photo went viral, and it helped Stanton raise more than $1.4 million for Vidal's school, Mott Hall Bridges Academy.

Now Stanton has turned his camera to Syrian refugees. He recently profiled 11 Syrian families moving to America, and he opened a new fund-raising page on Thursday to raise funds for those families.

At 1:40 p.m. on Christmas Eve, around two hours in, the page had raised close to $250,000.

Earlier this month we profiled eleven Syrian families that were preparing to begin new lives in America. They have escaped a horrible war, and have finally secured a degree of safety and security, but the road will be very tough for them. They will be starting at zero in a new country. In addition to the culture shock, they will face innumerable obstacles, including the need to learn an entirely new language. As they attempt to get their footing, they will be provided with little more than the bare minimum needed to subsist.

If you felt that some of the biggest movies this year were very familiar to those you’d seen in your youth, you’re not alone.

Four of the most gigantic blockbusters in 2015 heavily extracted movie plots and characters that were popular decades ago to create hits that are hard to define — a relatively new, unique, and apparently successful breed in Hollywood.

Some have called them “legacyquels” or “remakequels.” They're ostensibly sequels, but ones that closely follow the models of their franchises' origins, and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," already clearly the biggest movie of the year, is a prime example.

However you want to label them, Hollywood sees their worth — so expect more.

But let’s look back on why we had a sense of deja vu watching these four movies.

“The Force Awakens”

Global box office: $766 million (and counting) 

After years of going through prequels in which George Lucas attempted to show us the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker aka Darth Vader, director J.J. Abrams and writer Lawrence Kasdan decided to delve back into the original trilogy to make “Episode VII: The Force Awakens.” And I don’t just mean bringing back familiar faces like Han, Leia, Chewbacca, and Luke. The structure of “The Force Awakens” feels like you’re watching a hyped-up version of “Episode IV: A New Hope.” Everything from an attack on a giant globe-like space station to the lead character being a loner from a desert planet who has a special talent — it's designed to take us back to our first encounter with this universe.

“Jurassic World”

Global box office: $1.7 billion

Director Colin Trevorrow and writing partner Derek Connolly also geeked out on the past, with a blessing from Steven Spielberg himself, to bring the “Jurassic” franchise back. In “Jurassic World," the legacy of Jurassic Park is seeped in the storyline. A technician can’t help but show off his vintage t-shirt with the park’s old logo. And when kids Gray and Zach find themselves stuck inside the park with the dinosaurs, it’s coming across the welcome center from the old park that gets them out of trouble. Not to mention that the hit of “Jurassic Park,” the T-Rex, shows up in grand fashion at the end of the movie.

“Creed”

Global box office: $97.6 million

To bring life back into the “Rocky” franchise, director Ryan Coogler moved the focus to the Creed family, specifically an illegitimate son named Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) who dreams to one day be as great as his father, Apollo. Like “The Force Awakens” does with "A New Hope," Coogler uses a similar arc from the original “Rocky” to tell the story. An underdog — this time, though, with a pedigree surname — who trains his butt off, yes, even sprinting down the streets of Philly, as he prepares for a fight that will make or break his career. And then there’s Rocky Balboa being Adonis’ manager, an obvious homage to Mickey managing Rocky in the earlier films.

Like horror movies in October, December is the only time you absolutely must watch your favorite holiday classics — no exceptions.

Some of these movies, like the holidays themselves, are very warm. Others are darker than you might expect.

We've come up with a list of what to watch while you are spending the holidays with your family, from the classics to a few choice curveballs.

12. Yes, Seth Rogen's raunchy ensemble comedy "The Night Before" was just released this year, but it already feels like something that people will watch for years to come. It's a hilarious, dark, and surprisingly sweet Christmas movie for people who just can't connect to the Christmas Spirit.

11. Based on the classic children’s book, "The Polar Express" has CGI wizard Robert Zemeckis bringing to life a boy's magical ride to the North Pole. Tom Hanks is along for the ride as the voice of numerous characters. If you're a fan of the book, the visuals in the movie go beyond anything you imagined.

10. In "Bad Santa," Billy Bob Thornton plays an alcoholic conman who poses as a mall Santa every year to make out with all the money, jewels, and clothes he can get his hands on. But things change this year as he befriends a troubled kid. If you want to be anti-holiday (while also still being pretty holiday) this year, there's no better movie to watch.

The holiday season offers the most prime opportunities to experience some quality binge-watching.

Don't spend these weeks with breaks getting to know your family better. Or rediscovering yourself at a wellness retreat. Instead, take this time to check off some real worthwhile goals from your list — like taking in hours of entertainment. That's something you'll never regret.

"Black Mirror"

After British anthology series "Black Mirror" arrived to Netflix, it steadily found an American audience, and a rabid one at that. Even one of our greatest assets, Jon Hamm, deigned to star on its Christmas special last year.

Earning comparisons to "The Twilight Zone," "Black Mirror" explores the line between life and tech.

Netflix is producing the next season of "Black Mirror." 

"Twin Peaks"

After a rocky start, Showtime is a bit behind on its revival of director David Lynch's "Twin Peaks." That's okay, because it gives you time to really soak in the show's two bizarre and twist-filled seasons before its 2017 launch date.

The two seasons are available now on Netflix.

"Gilmore Girls"

With Netflix working on a new season of the cult favorite show, here's your chance to find out why it's beloved by so many.

"Gilmore Girls" stars "Parenthood" actress Lauren Graham as Lorelai Gilmore, a young, single mother who's best friends with her daughter, Rory (Alexis Bledel). Things get complicated when Lorelai's estranged parents come back into the picture with a desire for a relationship with their granddaughter.

All seven seasons of the series are available on Netflix now.

James Corden stars in McDonald's UK Christmas ad, which sees the "Late Late" show host share his brand of "carpool karaoke" — in which he sings along to popular songs in the car with his celebrity guests — with the British public.

Since November, McDonald's has been asking Brits to send in video versions of themselves in the car singing the classic Wizzard hit "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday." The push began with a TV ad showing a family singing the song on a trip to a McDonald's Drive-Thru.

McDonald's and its creative agency Leo Burnett London selected the best clips from hundreds of entries to create a 90-second Christmas Day ad, which will air during soap opera Coronation Street on ITV1.

The ad sees Corden joining in with the song and asking for a "children's choir," before the camera cuts to a scene of school children singing along on a coach trip.

Steve Hill, McDonald's head of marketing, said in a press release: "We set out to do something different with our festive campaign this year and we needed the British public to turn it into something special. It gives me great delight to confirm that they’ve done just that - our backseat singers really steal the show with this advert and we’re very proud of how well it has turned out."

Even when pressed for time, Quentin Tarantino can still give a good response to a meaningful question.

Toward the end of the San Diego Comic-Con panel for "The Hateful Eight" this past July, Tarantino was asked by one fan what his favorite thing was that he's ever written in a movie.

"That's actually such a good question I don't even know if I have an answer for it, especially with this pressed-for-time bulls---," the director of this week's "The Hateful Eight" told the crowd.

Still, he revealed that his favorite scene from his filmography is the opening of "Inglourious Basterds."

"My favorite thing I think I've ever written is the scene at the French farmhouse at the beginning of 'Inglourious Basterds,'" Tarantino said.

The scene Tarantino refers to is the very first one of his brutal World War II epic. In the scene, SS Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) arrives at a remote dairy farm in France that is suspected of hiding Jewish people. Landa sits down with the farmer (Denis Menochet) and questions him about the whereabouts of the Dreyfus family. 

The scene is a tense and sneaky psychological mind game in which a Nazi plays detective.

The unique part about this entire scene is that it clocks in at around 20 minutes long.

Most movie scenes are about a third of that length and typically aren't as dialogue-heavy. As with most Tarantino scripts, he avoids exposition and instead loves to trail off into incredibly long, windy, tangent-filled conversations.

Take this four-and-a-half minute stretch of the opening, where Landa stops interrogating and instead talks about why he enjoys being called "The Jew Hunter":

Tarantino wouldn't reveal exactly why this was his favorite scene that he has written, but it seems like almost everything he had written up to this point was building up to this conversational scene. Tarantino loves writing for bad guys, but he has never had to make somebody this evil become as terrifyingly charming.

And Tarantino was working on this script for about 10 years. During that time, it changed drastically. Many of the action scenes he had planned would eventually be used in "Kill Bill."

But before he wrote this scene and filmed it, he thought there was another scene from very early in his career that he could never top. 

"Before that it was, in my very first script, 'True Romance,' it was the whole Sicilian speech. That was the one to beat." Tarantino said. "And then when I finally wrote that scene in 'Inglorious Basterds,' I was like, 'Oh, I think I finally beat that one!'"

He is referring to the profanity-laden and hilarious speech made by Dennis Hopper. In a DVD commentary, Tarantino called this scene one of the "proudest moments" of his career.

"True Romance" was released in 1993, one year after Tarantino's directorial debut, "Reservoir Dogs," and one year before "Pulp Fiction" would make him the hottest filmmaker in Hollywood.

"True Romance" was actually not directed by Tarantino, but rather by the late Tony Scott. And yet, Tarantino's brilliant writing still made it on the screen completely intact. This was back during a time when he had far less clout than he does today.

This scene clocks in at 10 minutes long. Like the "Basterds" scene, that's much longer than the typical film scene, especially one that doesn't exactly move the plot forward. 

There is a big gap between "True Romance" and "Inglourious Basterds," the latter of which came out in 2009. Between those two films, Tarantino won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for "Pulp Fiction." (He would win again later for "Django Unchained.")

Based on what we saw in "The Hateful Eight," including a memorable monologue from Samuel L. Jackson that is too profane to write out here, it looks like Tarantino has something new to boast about.

"The Hateful Eight" is out in theaters on December 25. It expands nationwide on December 31.

With more than 400 scripted series on television this past year, it helps to get some pointers from those who make it their living to watch and review all the choices out there.

More and more outlets are creating this TV content, from streaming video companies like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu, to cable networks increasingly getting into the scripted-show game, like Bravo, E!, and Spike.

Metacritic keeps track of a curated group of critics, assigns each review a number according to how positive or negative it was, and then creates a weighted average score for each show.

Here are the 20 most critically acclaimed shows on TV in 2015 using Metacritic scores.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" opened last week and looks set to dominate the box office this month.

The film is the seventh in the "Star Wars" series, and it represents part of a growing trend in Hollywood for blockbuster franchise movies.

Citadel's Stephen Parlett, Evan Ericson, Joe Pasqualichio, and Steven Rosenberg laid out their thoughts on the movie business in a recent Q&A session.

Citadel, the hedge fund founded and led by Ken Griffin, has $25 billion in assets under management.

Pasqualichio was asked what impact flops had on movie studios. His answer reveals a great deal about why movie studios are going down the franchise route.

In short, they want to minimize their risk, appeal to an international audience, and bolster the potential for additional revenues through games and merchandise. That sounds like a no-brainer, and it probably won't come as a surprise to regular filmgoers.

Still, his explanation is a simple distillation of what is going on in Hollywood right now. He said:

There's a saying in Hollywood that "nobody knows nothing." So it's really hard to predict what's going to resonate with the public and what's not. I think a studio would probably be happy batting .500 on hits and misses, but it's really important to get the big bets right. So you had John Carter, a film with an approximate production budget of $250 million that ultimately lost around $200 million. Lone Ranger was another big miss.

Box office flops are going to come up from time to time, but your big bets, and especially the ones with IP backing them, should be enough to cover them. And that's why you're seeing studios move towards IP and franchise films like the Harry Potter series, where you had eight films that generated $7.7 billion over the full run. Those big hits will be able to absorb the losses from the John Carter s. Today, more than ever we're seeing this blockbuster strategy at studios where they rely on really big, tent-pole films – like the Star Wars movies – to generate sufficient profits that cover all of the misses and make the overall slate profitable.

And here he is on the globalization of the movie business:

Above all, this industry is going to continue to get more global. The focus is going to become more on what does the Chinese consumer want, what does the Latin American consumer want? A truly global blockbuster requires very high production value, very recognizable IP, and a plot that appeals to the entire globe.

The "Saturday Night Live" recap of the latest Republican presidential debate reflected fairly accurately the state of the GOP primary.

Beck Bennett, playing former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R), at multiple points took a "desperate swipe" at front-runner Donald Trump, only to be swatted away by the real-estate mogul. 

"Jeb, you're a very nice man, but you're basically a little girl. Folks, this is true, I got a hold of Jeb's birth certificate. And full disclosure: His full name is Jeborah," said Trump, played by Darrell Hammond.

The sketch also referenced Sen. Ted Cruz's (R-Texas) perceived "likability" problem.

"Well, Wolf, if I'm president, I can promise you ISIS will hate me," SNL's Cruz said, referencing CNN host Wolf Blitzer. "And how do I know? Because everyone who knows me hates me. Democrats hate me. Republicans hate me. Doctors say that I have a punch-able face," Cruz said.

He added: "So look out ISIS, because I'm going to crash your party. And just like every party I go to, I'm going to ruin it."

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R), who has seen a surge of support in some early-state polls as he focuses his campaign on national-security issues, listed off a "series of fear-mongering statements" when asked about the terrorist threat posed by ISIS.

"We are under attack and we are all going to die," SNL's Christie said. "Today, in our great country, one of three babies born are already ISIS. They are here folks, and I'm the only candidate with the stones to take them on."

And as with Tuesday's actual debate, the sketch returned to Bush and Trump's budding feud about the nature and tenor of the Republican race. 

"You're a jerk. You're never going to be president, Donald," Bush said.

"Yeah, none of us are, genius," Trump said.

Google has released an interactive video called "Special Delivery" that shows you more of the film as you move your phone around.

It's the first of Google's new "Spotlight Stories" which showcases new kinds of interactive 3D videos. While anyone can view the short YouTube cartoon on any PC or device, this video comes to life by viewing it on the YouTube app on a smartphone or tablet.

That's because it's full of "Easter Eggs," i.e. special hidden things you can only see on the YouTube app, as you move the phone. 

It's particularly designed to work with Google Cardboard, the cardboard box that turns a smartphone into a 3D virtual reality device. But you don't need the Cardboard to see the film in 3D mode.

"Special Delivery" was filmed by Aardman Animations in "Pink Panther"style. It's tells the story of a caretaker who is surprised by a mysterious stranger causing mischief on the roof on Christmas Eve. He investigates and the chase is on, but the stranger remains just out of sight, leaving a trail of gifts behind.

There's about a dozen bits of hidden content such as ...

A boy dreaming of a bike - the 360/3D viewers can see what Santa brings him, and what happens when he gets too excited.

A band that gets louder and louder -  They are playing in three windows. In 3D you have to swivel around to see them.

So if you're looking for a fun way to play with, say, a new iPhone 6S, Android Nexus 6P (or other qualifying phone) that Santa left under the tree, this could be it.

Even the most well-respected movies, books, and albums get ripped to shreds by semi-anonymous commenters. It can be truly wonderful to behold.

Earlier this week, my colleague Alex Morrell put together a comprehensive list of the most successful movies of 2015. He ranked them based on global box-office performance, critic reviews, and fan ratings. In short, these are the films that took over the world this year.

But not everyone was a fan of these films. We combed through the one-star reviews of the 13 most successful movies of 2015, and selected the best ones.

These 13 reviews are absurd, hilarious, and often completely valid — sometimes all at once. Find them below, along with a rundown of how the movie actually did with the rest of the world:

No. 13: "Mad Max: Fury Road"

Amazon one-star reviewer says:

I would give it no stars but that's not an option. My girlfriend and I saw this in the theater (both big Mad Max fans) and it was about what we expected it to be--complete garbage. Horribly underdeveloped characters. Virtually no plot. One car crash after another. Completely ridiculous stunts. And worst of all, Max is reduced to nothing more than a supporting character. Tom Hardy has the goods to play a wonderful replacement for Mel Gibson, but it seemed he was dealt a s***** hand in this debacle.

I honestly don't get why everyone thinks this is such a great film and I certainly don't understand why everyone thinks it's better than the original 3 films. But movies these days seem to stick to cater to the masses with insane gore and total mayhem, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I like a little bit of a story to go with it.

All in all, don't waste your time. Maybe if you catch it on a movie channel or the like but I wouldn't even recommend that. Seriously it's that bad.

Reuters published a rather unique photo essay last Friday featuring Ukraine's Darth Vader going about his daily routine — including walking his dog, shaving, and riding the bus.

The wire service reported that the Ukrainian citizen officially changed his name to Darth Mykolaiovych Vader in order to run a stunt campaign for mayor in the port city of Odessa. In that race, he finished 15th out of 42 candidates after campaigning with a number of other supporters dressed in "Star Wars" costumes.

Comedian Stephen Colbert might be adjusting his view on Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump's chances of success.

He told CBS' "Face the Nation" in an interview airing this Sunday that he "may be wrong" about Trump's candidacy not being viable.

Colbert also named the one thing that he found "appealing" about Trump's run for the Republican presidential nomination, saying it might be the "saving grace" of his campaign.

"There's a populism to Trump that I find very appealing," Colbert said. "And it's only this, is that the party elders would like him to go away. But the people have decided that he's not going to."

He continued: "I may disagree with anything that he's saying and think that his proposals are a little, well, more than a little shocking. But there is something really hopeful about the fact that, well, 36% of the likely voters want him, so the people in the machine don't get to say otherwise. That's the one saving grace, I think, of his candidacy."

Colbert also acknowledged having a certain respect for how in tune Trump is with what voters want.

"What I do respect is that he knows that it is an emotional appeal," Colbert said. "And it might be emotional appeals that I can't respect, but he knows that you have to appeal to the voter. And that's why I may be wrong. I made a big deal about, 'There's no way he's going to win.'"

"Again, I don't know anything about politics," he added.

Colbert has previously said he didn't think Trump had a real shot at the presidency.

In an October segment, Colbert addressed a photo of Trump, saying: "You're not going to be president. All right? It's been fun. It's been great. I love you. But come on, come on, buddy ... There is zero chance we'll be seeing you being sworn in on the Capitol steps with your hand on a giant golden Bible."

Trump is at the top of the polls among Republicans who are seeking their party's nomination, garnering 39% of the GOP vote in a CNN survey out Wednesday.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" hit theaters on Friday, and a group of analysts from the hedge fund Citadel sat down to discuss the Disney-owned movie franchise.

Among other things, analysts Stephen Parlett, Evan Ericson, Joe Pasqualichio, and Steven Rosenberg discussed which extraterrestrial character would fare best on Wall Street.

So which is it?

"Yoda. I think he would have made a great investor," Pasqualichio said. "He's wise, patient, and has an extremely long-term outlook, so I think he'd be able to find significant alpha."

And their least favorite characters?

"Let's just say Jar Jar Binks was not the greatest 'Star Wars' character of all time," Ericson said.

Citadel, founded and led by Ken Griffin, has $25 billion in assets under management. The firm held a stake in Disney until the third quarter.

If you've ever listened to StarTalk radio, then you'll know that its host, famed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, definitely has a sense of humor.

His humor was not lost on Business Insider when we asked him in a recent interview about his favorite science joke.

Tyson first heard this joke first told by science comedian Brian Malow.

Here's how it starts:

"A Higgs boson walks into a church."

If you're unfamiliar with the term "Higgs boson," you might know it by another name: the "God" particle.

(No self-respecting scientist would ever call it this, but that hasn't stopped media outlets from preserving the term.)

To get the joke, you must first understand the Higgs.

A Higgs boson is a type of subatomic particle that is about one-hundredth the size of a proton. Scientists used the world's most powerful particle accelerator to see it for the first time in 2012, and their discovery was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics the following year.

This discovery was Nobel-worthy because Higgs bosons come with a special ability: They help give other subatomic particles their mass. Without the discovery of a Higgs boson, physicists would not understand how particles, like those that make up you, me, and the billions of galaxies in the universe, could exist.

Back to the joke, as told to Business Insider by Tyson:

"Higgs boson walks into a church, and the priest says, 'I'm sorry we don't allow Higgs bosons to come to churches.' And [the Higgs] says, 'But without me, you can't have mass.'"

Just to make sure this joke is politically correct, Tyson mentioned he had tested this joke on a Jesuit priest. "He said it was cool, so that gives us total clearance," Tyson said with a laugh.

This joke is particularly timely because the machine that first detected a Higgs boson in 2012, the Large Hadron Collider, is scheduled to turn back on — after two years of heavy maintenance — by the end of this month.

By mid-summer the LHC should be at max power, which is twice the power at which it operated during its first run, from 2009 through 2012. Physicists hope to explore the properties of Higgs bosons in more detail as well as discover some more never-before-seen particles like those that physicists think make up the mysterious material called dark matter.
