For some, the changing leaves are indicative of fall, while for others it's that alluring scent of the wildly popular pumpkin-spice latte (PSL) — a seasonal coffee drink that mysteriously gives you a burst of delicious pumpkin pie flavor without the hassle of baking or dish-washing.

Surprisingly, those iconic spices that go into a home-made pumpkin pie constitute less than 11% of what gives your fall beverage its incredible flavor. And an even smaller amount of actual pumpkin is in there.

So how does the PSL manage to taste like pumpkin pie when it has so little of makes pumpkin pie so awesome? For the answer, we must turn to science.

We first learned about the amazing science behind the popular drink from food scientist Kantha Shelke on the Institute of Food Technologists.

Here are the facts:

It looks like Aaron Sorkin's new Steve Jobs movie is a flop

"Steve Jobs," the new biography of the Apple cofounder produced by Aaron Sorkin, had a disappointing debut, earning only an estimated $7.3 million in its opening wide-release weekend, according to Rentrak

That put it into 7th place in U.S., and is only slightly more than the $6.7 million earned by the widely panned "Jobs," which came out in 2013, the Wall Street Journal reports. "Steve Jobs" was expected to lead the pack this weekend after opening on a small number of screens last weekend.

Sorkin's last tech movie, "The Social Network," about the founding of Facebook, earned more than $22 million on its debut.

The movie has been savaged by Apple executives like Tim Cook and Jony Ive, and Jobs' widow Laurene Powell Jobs reportedly tried to prevent it from being made. Aaron Sorkin admitted that the film was partly dramatized.

'The Walking Dead' just shocked everyone with a huge divergence from the comics

Warning: There are spoilers ahead if you have not watched Sunday's episode of "The Walking Dead."

Creator Robert Kirkman wasn't kidding when he said that anyone could die this season on "The Walking Dead."

The AMC hit just shocked fans with a huge unexpected death in the third episode of the new season.

If you're not caught up, this is your last chance to head back.

the walking dead season 6

In the final 20 minutes of "The Walking Dead," Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Nicholas (Michael Traynor) found themselves in a dire situation as they were pitted against a horde of zombies.

Backed up against a fence, Nicholas took his own life falling into a pit of zombies as he took Glenn down with him.

Viewers then watched as walkers slowly tore Glenn apart to his slow demise.

The death came as a huge shock to everyone.

Some fans refuse to believe Glenn is actually dead.

Sure, we see the walkers have at it, digging into some person's body, but maybe that was Nicolas' body the zombies were tearing apart and not Glenn's.

Others are pointing out that Glenn also didn't pop up in the memorial of "The Walking Dead" aftershow "Talking Dead," which shows every character death in an episode.

The scene was especially shocking for long-term fans because Glenn comes to a much different end in Kirkman's comic series.

In issue 100, Glenn is killed off in a much more brutal fashion at the hands of a Walking Dead villain we haven't seen yet on the series.

glenn the walking dead issue 100the walking dead comic issue 100

On "The Walking Dead" aftershow, "Talking Dead," showrunner Scott Gimple said this won't be the last we see of the character saying we will see some version of Glenn again.

Many are taking that to mean that Glenn's wife Maggie could be pregnant.

What did you think of Sunday night's shocking episode?

NYPD union calls for boycott of Quentin Tarantino films after he marches in protest against police brutality

Quentin Tarantino joined hundreds of demonstrators who took to the streets of New York City on Saturday to protest police brutality nationwide.

“I’m a human being with a conscience,” Tarantino told The Associated Press. “And if you believe there’s murder going on then you need to rise up and stand up against it. I’m here to say I’m on the side of the murdered.”

Tarantino, who flew in from California for the protest, gathered with the demonstrators in Manhattan’s Washington Square park and then marched two miles along Sixth Avenue.

The event was the last of a three-day demonstration in the city done by RiseUpOctober. Speakers at the protest said they wanted to bring justice for people killed by police, according to the AP story.

Tarantino was one of those speakers. On stage he told the demonstrators, “When I see murder I cannot stand by.”

The demonstration on Saturday came four days after New York City police officer Randolph Holder was shot in the head and later died of his injury while responding to a shorts fired call in Manhattan’s East Harlem neighborhood.

The Oscar-winner addressed the timing of the event to The New York Post: “It’s like this: It’s unfortunate timing, but we’ve flown in all these families to go and tell their stories…That cop that was killed, that’s a tragedy, too.”

Following the event, New York City’s police union called a boycott of Tarantino’s films.

“It’s no surprise that someone who makes a living glorifying crime and violence is a cop-hater, too,” Police Benevolent Association president Patrick J. Lynch said in a statement.

“The police officers that Quentin Tarantino calls ‘murderers’ aren’t living in one of his depraved big screen fantasies — they’re risking and sometimes sacrificing their lives to protect communities from real crime and mayhem,” the statement continued. “New Yorkers need to send a message to this purveyor of degeneracy that he has no business coming to our city to peddle his slanderous ‘Cop Fiction.’ It’s time for a boycott of Quentin Tarantino’s films.”

the force awakens disneyStar Wars fans will get to watch the new movie on Netflix when it’s released early next year — but only in Canada, according to Variety.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has said that the streaming service has been in ongoing discussions to get "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" onto its service, but as it stands, Starz has the rights in most locations.

That could be set to change, as these discussions seem to have already borne fruit in one location.

This is good news not just for Netflix subscribers in Canada (or people masking their IP addresses with a VPN), but also for the rest of us, as it means that Starz is at least willing to negotiate in some markets.

Leah Remini is opening up again on her former life in Scientology and its biggest public face, Tom Cruise.

"Being critical of Tom Cruise is being critical of Scientology itself. You are evil," she said on ABC's "20/20" airing on Friday.

The former "King of Queens" actress also contemplated what she'd say to Cruise if he were watching the interview.

Cruise reportedly joined Scientology in 1990 and has since become its most celebrated member and outspoken advocate for the organization.

Remini has written what her publishers describe as a "bravely confessional" tell-all memoir titled "Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology," which will be released on November 3.

The memoir will detail the former "The Talk" co-host's more than 30-year membership in Scientology.

leah remini family its all relative season 2 tlcRemini left in July 2013 when she began to challenge the organization's control over its members. Her own daughter was also coming of age in the organization and she didn't want that life for her.

"As time goes on, you start to lose touch with the real world. The mindset becomes 'us against them,'" Remini told "20/20." "The decision to leave is you are giving up everything you have ever known and everything you have worked for your whole life."

Once she left Scientology, she spoke out about the disappearance of her friend, Shelly Miscavige, who was the wife of the church's leader David Miscavige. She even filed a missing persons report for Shelly with the Los Angeles Police Department.

The church told Business Insider in March that the police declared Remini’s missing persons report "unfounded" two years ago and that Shelly “continues in the church as she always has.”

Business Insider has reached out to the Church of Scientology for comment on Remini's statements to "20/20."

Mark Cuban explains what happens after a deal is made on 'Shark Tank'

mark cuban

For the past seven seasons, hundreds of entrepreneurs have appeared on the "Shark Tank" set in hopes of scoring a deal with a celebrity investor like Mark Cuban.

Some of these businesses, like horror-entertainment company Ten Thirty One Productions, go on to approach or exceed $1 million in annual profits within just a couple years of appearing on the show.

Cuban explained to Business Insider why getting a Shark like him can be so valuable to a company, and what the process following a successful pitch on the show looks like.

First of all, the handshake deal that happens on the show isn't anything binding. Filming for each season is split over the start of the summer and the start of the fall. After each round, the Sharks and their teams do due diligence on each of the companies to ensure that everything within the company is how it was represented in the pitch room.

There are times when the numbers check out, but the entrepreneurs decide they no longer want to make a deal, such as when the founders of evREwares decided they weren't actually willing to sell 100% of their struggling company to Cuban for $200,000 as they agreed to in season six.

Ultimately, said Cuban's fellow Shark Daymond John, about 80% of season seven's deals made on camera closed, which is up from about 60% to 70% of past seasons.

Each of the six "Shark Tank" investors have different management styles, but the main reason they typically ask for high-equity deals is that they are more hands-on than a typical venture-capital firm or angel investor.

mark cuban hug shark tankCuban said he and the Dallas-based Mark Cuban Cos. team "often take over their accounting, website, packaging design, and more."

Mark Cuban Cos. also optimizes a company's online presence through free software deals with business partners. Cuban's "Shark Tank" companies host their sites on Rackspace's servers and use customer-relationship management software from Nimble to store communications and monitor site analytics.

Cuban boosts his new companies' sales by assigning them seasoned marketers from his team and arranging distribution deals with partners like Amazon Exclusives and Brookstone.

"We realize that by taking the back office off their hands, they can focus on core competencies," Cuban said.

At last week's Wall Street Journal WSJD Live conference, Cuban said, "Of the 71 startups that I've invested in through 'Shark Tank,' two have gone out of business, three are so stupid they don't know they're out of business, and then probably 50, give or take, are in growth."

He told Business Insider that he has "a bunch" of companies making more than half a million in annual profits and a few that have surpassed a million. He mentioned that some of his best-performing companies, besides Ten Thirty One Productions, include Rugged Maniac, The Red Dress Boutique, Tower Paddle Boards, Gameday Couture, Simple Sugars, and Q-Flex.

We recently asked the other Sharks how they make deals on the show and what happens once the cameras stop rolling. You can find their answers below.

This scene from 'The Empire Strikes Back' led to a huge mystery that 'Star Wars' fans haven't been able to solve for 35 years

mark hamill emipre face 2 final

On January 11, 1977 Mark Hamill got into a car accident that fractured his nose and left cheekbone.

If the accident had happened four months later the news would have been in every paper around the world. But at the time Hamill was still an unknown actor who had just finished being the lead in a yet-to-be-released sci-fi movie in which he wore all white and wielded a glowing sword.

Hamill had to have cartilage taken from his ear to rebuild his nose.

But when "Star Wars: A New Hope" opened on May 25, 1977 breaking box office records and making everyone involved — especially Hamill as Luke Skywalker — overnight sensations, little attention was made about Hamill's accident.

However when the sequel to "A New Hope," 1980's "The Empire Strikes Back," opened with Skywalker being mauled in the face by a Wampa, fans speculated that the scene was written because Hamill's face looked different after his accident.

The rumor has become one of the biggest unsolved mysteries of the "Star Wars" saga, 35 years after the film was released.

But First, What Happened?

Speaking to Gossip Magazine in 1978 for the release of "Corvette Summer," which was released between "A New Hope" and "The Empire Strikes Back," Hamill spoke about the accident:

"What happened was that I was on the wrong freeway," Hamill said. "I was way out in the sticks somewhere and there were no cars and no traffic, thank God. I was going about 65-70 mph... I was speeding, going too fast... and what happened, I think, was that I tried to negotiate an off-ramp and lost control, tumbled over, and went off the road. I fractured my nose and my cheek."

mark hamill hope empireHamill also said in the interview that the next day he was supposed to do pick-up shots for "A New Hope" of scenes on Tatooine. This led to director George Lucas having to use a double, though the shots were for scenes where you wouldn't see Hamill's face.

So Hamill's accident did not effect the completion of "A New Hope," but the question is, did it alter "The Empire Strikes Back?"

The Wampa Scene

This is where the story gets hazy.

In the opening scene of "The Empire Strikes Back," Skywalker's face is scratched after being attacked by a Wampa, which digs its claws into his face and then drags Skywalker and his Tauntaun back to its cave. George Lucas says the Wampa scene helped justify Hamill's new look to viewers, but suggests the scene wasn't written because of his accident.

"At the end of 'A New Hope' he had been in a car accident and I knew Mark was going to look a little different than he was in the first film," said Lucas in the Blu-ray commentary of "The Empire Strikes Back."

"But my feeling was some time had past, they've been in the Rebellion fighting, that kind of thing, so the change was justifiable. There's a scene in the film where Mark gets beat up by the monster [Wampa], which helps even more, but that wasn't really the meaning of why we wrote the monster in the beginning. We needed something to keep the film suspenseful at the beginning while the Empire is looking for them."

However, Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia, remembers things differently.

mark hamill empire face"I was still shooting 'Star Wars' when Mark got into the car accident," Fisher said in the commentary. "It was a really bad accident. Miraculously his teeth didn't shatter. But his nose did. He had to have some of his ear put into his nose. So they adjusted the film with this snow monster to right away in the movie scratch his face to account for his looks being different."

Revealed in the book, "The Making of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back," a scene was filmed after Skywalker is saved from the Wampa attack where his damaged face is attended by a droid.

That portion was cut out, though it seems clear Lucas and "Empire" director Irvin Kershner were working out how far they wanted to go to address Hamill's restructured face.

What Hamill Says

For the most part Hamill has been quiet about the origin of the Wampa scene, but this interview with the actor posted on YouTube in 2014 does indicate that the make-up department on "Empire" did play on his scars from the crash.

Briefly describing what he remembers from the accident, he then said: "they used a lot of the real scars to build upon" the make up used for the scene.

This is not Hamill admitting that the Wampa scene was written due to how his face looked after the accident, but it's interesting to hear that his scars from the crash were on the mind of the make up artists.

So what do you think? Was the Wampa scene created due to Hamill's restructured face?

Watch the Wampa attack scene, followed by Skywalker escaping the Wampa's cave.

Parks and Recreation' star Aziz Ansari claims this is the exact formula TV shows use to cast minorities in order to reach a racial quota

Aziz Ansari doesn't mince words when it comes to race and Hollywood.

After screening his new Netflix series, "Master of None," at EW Fest on Saturday, Vulture reported the actor discussed the lack of opportunities for minorities in Hollywood during a post-screening Q&A.

He said he had to create his own show because no one was offering him dynamic roles.

parks and recreation aziz ansari"Look, if you’re a minority actor, no one would have written this show for you. No one would have been like, 'Hey, how about we get Aziz to do this 10-episode show and have him play this thoughtful character.' At best they would just write something that’s a character based on the qualities people have seen already like Tom [Haverford]."

The reason there are so few roles in TV for minorities, Ansari said, is that TV casts with racial quotas.

"That’s a real thing that happens," the 32-year-old actor said. "When they cast these shows, they’re like, 'We already have our minority guy or our minority girl.'"

In fact, Ansari said he knows TV's racial quota numbers:

"There would never be two Indian people in one show," he explained. "With Asian people, there can be one, but there can't be two. Black people, there can be two, but there can't be three because then it becomes a black show. Gay people there can be two, women there can be two, but Asian people, Indian people, there can be one but there can't be two."

"Master of None" premieres on Friday, November 6 on Netflix.

YouTube stars SortedFood tell us about their plans to open offline cookery schools as they bid to become 'the biggest online cooking community' (GOOG, GOOGL)

SORTEDfood

SortedFood's star has been rising recently.

The company behind the four British schoolfriends-turned-cheeky-online-chefs has amassed more than 1.3 million YouTube subscribers, the boys are the stars of YouTube's latest advertising campaign, and they recently returned back home after a three-month food tour of America which picked up so much pace that NBC's "Today" show asked them to produce a regular TV segment.

But two of the channel's cofounders, Jamie Spafford and Barry Taylor, told Business Insider they have a bigger ambition. They see SortedFood becoming "the biggest online cooking community in the world."

The "community" aspect is so important that SortedFood wants to do more to engage with them in the offline world too.

Spafford and Taylor told us that they have plans to launch a cookery school. From humble beginnings — four schoolfriends who five years ago created a food show depicting them "monkeying around" with recipes because they were so worried their diets had become atrocious when they became adult students — the company has just moved into new premises in London's Tower Hill to house its 12 staff. Now SortedFood wants to extend the space so it can entertain and teach fans too.

Taylor said: "Our mission is to do things that no other channel could do. From a digital aspect we have been leading online in how to educate people about food and cooking. We don't teach people how to cook and say 'this is the one way to do things.' We're not Gordon Ramsey saying 'there's my way or the highway.' We're saying you can build on it, and explore food with the community. When we do have a school or a restaurant it'll be as much the community's as our own."

They don't yet know when they'll be offering out classes, or even what shape the lessons might take, as they say they are currently in an exploration stage — which will no doubt see them take some advice from their army of fans.

A little boost from YouTube has been helping SortedFood along the way too

Spafford said SortedFood has been working "quite closely" with YouTube over the past two to three years. Earlier this year, when YouTube decided to repeat an ad campaign promoting its creators but with different YouTube stars, the company approached SortedFood. Copa90, a soccer-focused YouTube channel, also features in the campaign

"It's difficult to turn that kind of offer down," Spafford said. "The process was seamless, fantastic. They work with the best people and the best agencies [Essence Digital was the agency behind the campaign] — there were some occasions when we found out YouTube was better able to communicate our brand than us!"

The ad launched earlier this month in the UK on TV, online, and outdoor, and immediately, the channel's numbers began picking up. And it was clear that the campaign boosted the channel's brand recognition among people who had yet to discover it via the usual digital channels.

Taylor: "The messages started to come in from the people we haven't spoken to in a few years. Friends, family, ex-girlfriends ..."

YouTube also funded an experiential campaign starring the SortedFood boys. Earlier this month it took a branded food truck to London's Covent Garden and Spitalfields markets and gave away 2,000 boxes packed with ingredients to make calzone.

"YouTube supported a big investment in our new series about how not enough people in the UK are eating together. So the idea was to create a recipe to make at home, tweet the community to tell them where we were, give them a box, and get everyone to share the results ... it's kind of everything SortedFood stands for," Taylor said.

Beyond making money via YouTube (creators get a cut of the advertising revenue associated with their videos,) SortedFood has also signed major sponsorships with brands including Kenwood and Tesco.

Taylor and Spafford won't reveal how much they earn. The majority of SortedFood's income is from sponsorships, but they say every penny they earn goes back into investing in the business and helping it move in the right direction towards becoming a global cooking brand.

'Supergirl' boss reveals the exact moment any doubts over casting Melissa Benoist faded away

supergirl casting cbs premiere

The competition to play CBS's Supergirl was fierce.

"Glee" star Melissa Benoist beat out many actresses, both unknown and known, to play the coveted role of Superman's cousin, including reported actresses "Vampire Diaries" star Claire Holt and "Hollyoaks" star Gemma Atkinson.

While the studios felt like they found their girl, Showrunner Andrew Kreisberg said on a press call last week that there was a moment when it became crystal clear that Benoist was the right choice.

"We knew that she was our Supergirl and our Kara from the very start, I don’t think any of us ever questioned that," Kreisberg clarified.

He later added, "For all the good intentions and all the good planning and all the talented people in the world, you could sometimes misfire on these things, especially when it’s based on a comic book — but when Melissa stepped out wearing that outfit, it was like, 'Oh, this is going to work.' None of us had any doubts from that point forward."

And for Benoist, who this time last year was preparing for the "Supergirl" audition and didn't even dress up for Halloween, there was never any doubt that this was the role of a lifetime.

"I think the reason I was so drawn to it from the beginning was because I knew it was a once in a lifetime opportunity," Benoist said. "And I just think it’s a beautiful story to tell in a really sometimes scary world and that it would be something I would be really proud to be a part of."

"Supergirl" premieres Monday, October 26 at 8:30 p.m. on CBS.

We finally know what Jon Stewart is doing with his free time after "The Daily Show": He's opening an animal sanctuary.

Stewart confirmed his post-late night plans, Yahoo News reports, this past weekend as he and his wife Tracey were honored at a gala hosted by Farm Sanctuary, a nonprofit dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of farm animals.

Tracey said the couple purchased a 12-acre farm in New Jersey back in 2013 with the intention of creating a safe haven for rescued farm animals. As a team venture with Farm Sanctuary, the farm will also provide educational resources for those seeking more information.

The Stewarts have been animal rights activists for years. Jon hosted Gene Baur, president and cofounder of Farm Sanctuary, on "The Daily Show" earlier this year, and last year, he produced a 5-minute segment criticizing New Jersey Governor Chris Christie's refusal to pass a bill that would ban pig gestation crates.

Tracey works closely with Farm Sanctuary and Animal Haven Shelter and recently published "Do Unto Animals: A Friendly Guide to How Animals Live, and How We Can Make Their Lives Better," an illustrated book about interacting with animals. Some proceeds from the book's sales will benefit Farm Sanctuary.

Started in 1986, Farm Sanctuary currently operates three shelters: one in upstate New York and two in California.

One of the most outrageous hosts of the Golden Globes is coming back.

Deadline is reporting that Ricky Gervais will return as emcee of the Globes, which will air on January 10.

Gervais, who had the hosting job from 2010 to 2012, received huge laughs in the spot (and at just about any other award show), but he's also made some people in the industry angry, which makes this development something of a surprise.

President Philip Berk of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which puts on the Globes, said after the 2011 show that the comic "crossed the line" with his material.

But Gervais returned the following year as host.

Since then, the duties have gone to the more-than-capable hands of Amy Poehler and Tina Fey.

According to Deadline, Gervais was approached by NBC to return, with the blessing of the HFPA.

By 2012, Gervias as host still had strong ratings among the competition, but the following year with Fey and Poehler saw the Globes' highest ratings since 2007.

"Tina and Amy are a hard act to follow but Ricky is completely fearless and entirely up for the job,” NBC's president of alternative and late night Paul Telegdy said in the Deadline story. "He always did us proud. Welcome back, Ricky."

Alexander first joined theater in middle school as a fun hobby, but she ended up getting kicked out of her high school theater program due to her lack of singing talent. That's when she turned to sports.

Alexander's return to acting was the result of serendipitous events at age 17. She filled in for a sick friend at a showcase. And her manager, Randy James, was attending in place of a friend who was giving birth. He still manages her to this day.

How to watch Mars, Venus, and Jupiter come together in a rare close encounter this week

A celestial event happening this week will be so bright even people in bright cities like New York City, will get to see it — as long as the morning skies remain clear of clouds.

The two brightest planets in the night sky, Venus and Jupiter, plus the dimmest, Mars, will appear to pass extremely close to one another all of this week.

This close encounter is called a triple planetary conjunction and we won't see another one like it until January 2021.

The apparent distance between Venus and Jupiter will be so small Tuesday morning that you could take your thumb and place it over both Jupiter and Venus and completely cover them.

The best time to see this rare celestial event is just before sunrise because that's when the three planets are high above the horizon but it's still dark enough to spot all three of them.

On its own, Mars is hard to identify because it is small and not very bright. However, you should be able to spot the red-tinted point because it will be extremely close to Venus and Jupiter — some of the brightest points in the sky.

As the planets move across the sky this week, they will trace a triangle that will grow increasingly small until it's only about 5 degrees wide, or the width of your three middle fingers. If you have a typical pair of binoculars, all three planets will fit inside your field of view.

Here's how they'll look this week, with Venus and Jupiter passing one another as the week progresses:

To see this awesome event, all you have to do is go outside before sunrise and look up toward the eastern horizon. The two bright specks of Venus and Jupiter along the easter horizon are a dead giveaway.

While binoculars or a telescope will give you a better view of the planets, you should be able to spot all three with the unaided eye.

And if you're extra diligent you might even be able to identify a fourth planet: Mercury.

"As dawn brightens, look for a fourth planet, Mercury, lurking way down near the horizon below the other three," Sky and Telescope reports. "Don't delay; Mercury is sinking lower day by day."

Throughout the entire month of October, the three planets — Venus, Mars, and Jupiter — have been inching ever-closer. Here's an animation showing their motion for the first half of the month:

jupiter

Despite their apparent close encounters, the three planets will not actually collide or pass close to each other in space. They only appear to do so because of their locations in the night sky.

Right now Venus is about 65 million miles from Earth; Jupiter is 560 million miles from Earth; and Mars is about 207 million miles away.

Of the three planets, Venus is the closest to Earth and, therefore, the brightest. While Jupiter is much farther than Mars, it is more than 20 times larger, which is why it's so much brighter. Moreover, the surface of Mars is less reflective than either Jupiter or Venus, which also explains why it is so dim.

If you get any shots of the conjunction, send them with a description, your name, and location to our science team at jorwig@businessinsider.com and we might feature them on our site.
