Peter Dinklage was completely stunned by his second Emmy win for 'Game of Thrones'

Peter Dinklage just won his second Emmy for supporting actor on HBO's "Game of Thrones," and no one seemed more surprised than the actor himself.

peter dinklage

The 46-year-old actor was up against some steep competition including Jonathan Banks (“Better Call Saul”),  Jim Carter (“Downton Abbey”), and Alan Cumming (“The Good Wife”).

The shocked Dinklage took the stage admitting he didn't expect the win.

peter dinklage emmys

"I wasn't prepared at all," said Dinklage. "I was even chewing gum."

He then gave a super short speech in which he recognized the other actors in his category. He nearly left the stage before adding thanks to series creator George R.R. Martin, who was in attendance, and his fellow cast and crew.

"I wasn't prepared because the other actors in my category, I'm still sort of awed by all of their performances. Jonathan Banks, you are ...," Dinklage trailed off before saying, 'and the rest."

We're only as good as our writers and I'm lucky enough to work with the greatest writers led by David Benioff and Dan Weiss ... and George Martin, who created our universe, and Lena Headey, my inspiration and scene partner, and everyone else in the cast, which is like thousands of people, so good night."

"Game of Thrones" went on to win the overall biggest award of the night for best drama series at the 67th annual Emmys.

Martin approves.

Viola Davis gave an incredible Emmys acceptance speech

Viola Davis Kevin Winter Getty

Viola Davis made history Sunday night at the Emmys as she became the first black woman ever to win Outstanding Actress in a Drama.

She took that moment to deliver a powerful acceptance speech in which she quoted Harriet Tubman and gave praise to her fellow black actresses for making it possible for this day to come.

Below is her complete acceptance speech:

"'In my mind I see a line and over that line I see green fields and lovely flowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line but I can't seem to get there no how. I can't seem to get over that line.' That was Harriet Tubman in the 1800s.

And let me tell you something, the only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that simply aren't there. So here's to all the writers the awesome people — Ben Sherwood, Paul Lee, Peter Norwalk, Shonda Rhimes— people who have redefined what it means to be beautiful, to be sexy, to be a leading woman to be black.

And to the Taraji P. Hensons, the Kerry Washingtons, the Halle Berrys, the Nicole Beharies, the Meagan Goods, to Gabriel Union, thank you for taking us over that line. Thank you to the Television Academy. Thank you."

CNN's Jake Tapper confronts Donald Trump: 'Do you not have a responsibility to call out this hatred?'

Screen Shot 2015 09 21 at 7.01.01 AM

CNN anchor Jake Tapper confronted Donald Trump on Sunday for placating a supporter who spouted anti-Muslim conspiracy theories.

At a Thursday town-hall event, a man presented multiple inflammatory claims to Trump, including the widely debunked allegation that President Barack Obama is a Muslim.

But Tapper bluntly pressed Trump on the man's broader declaration that Muslims were a "problem."

"You're not responsible for what he says, but this is raw, unvarnished, ignorant bigotry," Tapper said. "You are a leader. You are the front-runner in the Republican race. Do you not have a responsibility to call out this hatred?"

Trump suggested that the CNN "State of the Union" host was simply trying to be "politically correct" and defended the idea that some Muslims were a serious problem.

"I have friends that are Muslims," the real-estate mogul said. "They're great people, amazing people. And most Muslims — like most everything — I mean, these are fabulous people. But we certainly do have a problem."

"What's the problem?" Tapper asked.

"Well, you have radicals that are doing things," Trump said. "I mean, it wasn't people from Sweden that blew up the World Trade Center, Jake."

Tapper tried one more time, noting that the Trump supporter had directly told the candidate: "We have a problem in this country. It's called Muslims." There wasn't any reference to extremism, Tapper said.

"What if he had said, 'We have a problem in this world — it's called blacks?'" he asked Trump. "Would you have said something then?"

Trump insisted that he never acknowledged his supporter's allegations about Muslims and that it wasn't a big deal at the event.

"I actually didn't respond," he said. "It was a question that was asked in front of a totally packed house. Nobody thought much of it until the following couple of hours, when it came became a pretty big subject. But, no, we do have a problem with radical Muslims."

The discussion then moved onto other subjects.

The surprise album that Drake just released was never supposed to happen

Screen Shot 2015 09 20 at 7.55.55 PM

On Sunday, Drake released a joint mixtape with rapper Future called "What a Time to Be Alive."

The collaboration was officially announced just one day before the tape dropped.

The project came as a surprise to most people because Drake's highly anticipated solo album, "Views From the 6," is due out later this year, and Future just released an album in July.

Drake also released a mixtape in February called "If You're Reading This It's Too Late."

On Apple's Beats 1 radio, the station that premiered the album on Sunday, Drake told listeners how it came together, basically saying the mixtape was an accident.

"I went to Atlanta for six days a couple weeks ago with the hopes of doing some songs with Future, and when you get around Future, it's like a vortex," Drake said. "That guy can outwork anybody right now."

He added, "It's tough to see someone do four, five songs in one night and not try to match it."

The mixtape has 11 tracks, an impressive number of songs to put together in just a few days.

Drake also mentioned how he chose the title for his new, spontaneous album. When he realized his trip to Atlanta would produce a collaborative effort with Future, Drake told writer and friend Ernest Baker about the project. Baker replied, "What a time to be alive," and that's how Drake named it.

What a time to be alive indeed.

You can listen to the full album on Apple Music.

After the 4th Emmy win in a row for 'Veep,' a stunned Julia Louis-Dreyfus resorted to taking selfies on stage

"Veep," starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus cleaned up at the 67th Emmy Awards Sunday night, and the fourth win seems to have been just as rewarding as the first three for Louis-Dreyfus.

The show won best comedy series, best writing for a comedy series (Simon Blackwell) and best supporting actor for a comedy series (Tony Hale). Louis-Dreyfus beat out Amy Schumer, Amy Pouhler, Lisa Kudrow and others to win best actress in a comedy series.

Her win made Emmy history; Dreyfus has the most lead actress comedy wins (six total) between her roles in "Veep," "Seinfeld" and "The New Adventures of Old Christine." Mary Tyler Moore and Candice Bergen are also six-time Emmy winners.

During Blackwell's award, the whole cast took the stake and a stunned Louis-Dreyfus resorted to taking selfies of her co-stars and their view from on stage at the Emmys.

Emmy ratings plummeted 20% from last year's award show

0

GettyImages andy samberg emmy ratings

UPDATE 11:59 AM ET: Preliminary ratings are in and they show that 11.9 million people tuned into the Emmys and it earned a 3.2/9 rating in the 18-49 demo. That represents a 24% drop in the rating and a 19% fall in total viewers year-0ver-year, according to Nielsen.

Previously:

Things aren't looking good for Fox and the ratings for Sunday's Emmy awards telecast.

Variety reports that early numbers are showing a 20% drop for the awards show compared to last year. The overnight numbers show that the Emmys earned an 8.7 overnight rating with a 14 share from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the metered markets. Compared to the show's 10.9/18 rating from last year, it dropped 20%.

Fox's run of the Dallas-Philadelphia game ahead of the awards should have given the show a push in viewership, but it didn't do as well either and finished 20 minutes shy of the awards show.

NFL ended up having the biggest program of the night for NBC: "Sunday Night Football" earned a 16.3/27 rating.

The drop in ratings is surprising with all that was at stake on Sunday night. For example, Jon Hamm won his first Emmy for "Mad Men," Viola Davis became the first black woman to win for lead actress, and "Game of Thrones" won Best Drama for the first time.

Final numbers will arrive later on Monday.

All that said, last year's show was a hard one to beat. It was the second biggest overall audience for the Emmys in 8 years, attracting 15.6 million total viewers and averaged a 4.2 rating with the advertiser-c0veted adults between the ages of 18 and 49.

The 'Insta-famous' sons and daughters of New York's elite let me into their circle — here's what it was like

Andrew Warren Rich Kids of Instagram

Take a look at the "Rich Kids of Instagram" blog and you'll see over-the-top photos of luxury bags, massive bottles of Dom Perignon, and flights on private jets. The photos are posted by an anonymous source, who wades through Instagram to find photos of young people flaunting their wealth.

But if you ask some of the so-called "rich kids" featured on the site, their lives aren't like that all of the time.

"We just live a certain lifestyle and people perceive it in their own way," Reya Benitez, daughter of legendary Studio 54 DJ John "Jellybean" Benitez, said to Business Insider. "We're not flashing things."

Benitez has more than 3,000 followers on Instagram. Gaia Matisse, great-great-granddaughter of French painter Henri Matisse and daughter of the late, famed pop artist Alain Jacquet, has more than 15,700 Instagram followers.

"Any picture can be turned into something else," Gaia said. "Our Instagrams are just fun photos of us having fun. There may be a helicopter in the background, but that's just us."

But according to aspiring fashion designer Andrew Warren, the ringleader and self-proclaimed "Kris Jenner of the group" — which also includes Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s daughter Kyra, Donald Trump's daughter Tiffany, Magic Johnson's son EJ, and actress Bella Thorne — his friends are headed towards big things of their own.

"I try to push everyone toward what they actually want to do," he said. Andrew has more than 34,000 Instagram followers. "My friends are all really different but talented at different things."

We spent a day with Andrew, Gaia, and Reya to get a glimpse at what life as an elite 20-something New Yorker is really like.

We met Andrew at his apartment, located in a stunning, two-towered co-op building that fronts Central Park. Built in the 1930s, the building was at different times home to Marc Jacobs, Conan O'Brien, and members of the Genovese crime family.

His family occupies a second-floor spread here, where Andrew has lived his whole life. His dad is a prominent real estate investor, and his grandfather was a fashion tycoon. "He passed before I met him," Andrew said. "There's a statue in the Garment District of a man sewing, and his name is the last one on it."

Andrew has an interest in fashion, too. He recently launched his own clothing line called Just Drew, available online and at Blue & Cream, a boutique with locations in Manhattan and the Hamptons. He was originally asked to do a T-shirt line with a friend, but they lost touch.

7 major movies Bill Murray turned down — or just didn’t pick up the phone for

0

Bill Murray Alberto E. Rodriguez Getty

It’s always fun to think about how a famous role would have been handled if another superstar actor had landed it instead.

And it turns out there are a lot of roles Bill Murray had in his grasp.

In the new book “The Big Bad Book of Bill Murray,” author Robert Schnakenberg looks back on the legend’s career in glowing, but brief, snippets, including those projects he turned down. In some cases, he "passed" on roles because he just didn’t feel like checking his voicemail at the time. (Murray no longer has an agent or manager and gets all of his offers via a 1-800 number he’s set up.)

Here are some of the roles that have come Murray’s way over the years.

SEE ALSO: 23 actors who turned down huge movie roles

“Airplane!”

The directors of the iconic 1980s comedy, Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker, reached out to Murray to play the lead role, Ted Striker. According to the book, Murray turned it down. (The filmmakers also went to David Letterman.) Murray later said that “Airplane!” was an example of a project he passed on but knew would be a hit.

“Bad Santa”

Murray was director Terry Zwigoff’s first choice to play despicable strip-mall Santa/safe cracker, Willie. Zwigoff said that he even got a verbal agreement from Murray. But when it was time to sign a contract the actor was MIA.

“I was told by one of the producers that he really wanted to do it,” Zwigoff said. “I left several messages on his answering machine, but after a few weeks of hearing nothing we eventually moved on.”

The role went to Billy Bob Thornton.

“Batman”

It's hard to believe, but according to the book, Murray was briefly considered by Tim Burton to play the Dark Knight in his 1989 movie. Mel Gibson, Kevin Costner, and Pierce Brosnan were also in contention. The role eventually went to Michael Keaton.

Could you even imagine Murray as Batman?

Spotify’s popular Discover Weekly playlists didn't update today and people are freaking out

Discover Weekly has quickly become one of Spotify's most formidable weapons in its fight against Apple Music.

The feature, which debuted in Julydelivers a personalized playlist to its users each week on Monday morning. The playlist runs about two hours long and is assembled by Spotify's algorithms, in sharp contrast to Apple which relies more on celebrity "human" curation.

But this morning, something odd happened — or rather, didn't. Discover Weekly playlists all around the world failed to update, and the internet went crazy.

Discover Weekly has quickly become a fan favorite, and as BuzzFeed points out, the reactions on Twitter show just how upset people were that it didn't arrive in their metaphorical mailbox to cure their Monday gloom.

Here are some of the best reactions:

A Spotify spokesperson told Business Insider that users should not worry. The Spotify team is fine-tuning the creation mechanism and the feature should be back to normal by tomorrow at the latest.

The Foo Fighters were supposed to perform on the Emmys, but they got 'kicked off'

A Foo Fighters performance during Sunday's Emmys was canceled, according to the rock group's lead singer and guitarist Dave Grohl.

"We were supposed to play at the Emmys and we were gonna play on the Emmys and they kicked us off," Grohl told TMZ.

When asked why the performance was cancelled, Grohl said, "I can't tell you. Do your research, but they did."

Later on Monday, the group released a statement to Rolling Stone magazine. It revealed that Fox wouldn't allow the band to play a full song and the Foo Fighters declined to play altogether:

"The band and the Academy were extremely happy and excited to have Foo Fighters play as the first ever rock band on the Emmys. Fox then refused to allow the band to play a full song from the Emmy-winning 'Sonic Highways.' That is why the band decided not to perform."

Fox's decision may have been based on time constraints as Sunday's awards show ended right at its three allotted hours at 11 p.m.

The TV Academy and Fox didn't immediately respond to Business Insider's requests for comment.

Just a week ago, the band were Emmy darlings after winning two Creative Arts Emmys for their HBO docuseries "Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways."

Snoop Dogg has moved from rap artist to tech investor, but now he's trying his hand at being a startup founder too.

His new business, Merry Jane, will be an "information hotline" for cannabis and give companies and pot enthusiasts a place to find authentic information.

"In the beginning, it was more investing on creativity. Then it became more business. Then it was things that I like, for example, the cannabis industry," Snoop Dogg said.

Merry Jane will have a news articles, a cooking show, music videos, and some original series, including one called "Deflowered" that's described as an interview series where one person enjoys pot and shares their new life experience. There will also be a database of dispensaries and their strains to help match pot users with what would be best for them.

"We're going to be like the encyclopedia to the cannabis world," Snoop Dogg said.

Snoop Dogg isn't the only celeb to enjoy a smoke, so his friend Seth Rogen will be a part of the venture. Snoop Dogg also wants to bring more people into the cannabis industry and give them the information they need. Before the site launches in October, they're inviting 420 people a day into the beta site.

"It gives me proud honor to say that Merry Jane will be the door to bring people out of the closet that do what we do," Snoop Dogg said. "We’re a better world if everyone comes out of the closet and says that they like to smoke."

Following the touching return of Tracy Morgan at the Emmys Sunday night, there's news that the funnyman is one step closer to returning to the big screen.

According to The Wrap, Morgan is in negotiations to join Ice Cube and Charlie Day ("It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia") in the comedy "Fist Fight."

This would be the first movie Morgan would be involved in since he was seriously injured in 2014 when a Walmart truck hit the limo Morgan and others were riding in on the New Jersey Turnpike.

The comedy follows a teacher (Day) who is challenged to a fist fight by a tougher colleague (Cube).

Morgan's role has not been disclosed, according to The Wrap, but the news shows that the comic is on the road to recovery.

At Sunday's Emmys, Morgan took the stage towards the end of the evening and thanked everyone for their well-wishes. He also told the audience that he had suffered a traumatic brain injury due to the accident, which put him in a coma for eight days.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings just predicted when cable TV will die once and for all (NFLX)

0
0

Reed HastingsNetflix has taken the world by storm, transforming itself from a mail-order DVD company to a streaming behemoth that uses 37% of the bandwidth in North America.

And it represents the massive change many think will take place in the entertainment industry, with traditional cable TV companies buckling in favor of streaming services.

In the first half of 2015, year-over-year subscriber growth for cable companies like Time Warner Cable and Comcast actually went negative. And in a short time, more people will stream video online each day than will watch scheduled programs on traditional TV, according to a new study from Ericsson.

The writing is on the wall, and it seems traditional cable companies will soon be forced to evolve or die. And according to Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, that day isn't too far off. During an interview with CNBC, Hastings said he believes that within the next 10 to 20 years, all of television will be on the internet. Not just some of it, all of it.

And he went even further than that. “All the current linear networks will go to on-demand,” he told CNBC— even sports networks like ESPN, whose weak growth set off a stock plunge among media stocks in August. If Hastings is correct, the media landscape will look drastically different a decade from now.

Hastings also spoke about why Netflix has enjoyed such meteoric growth. He credited two things: the internet and data analysis. "We are just a learning machine. Every time we put out a new show, we are analyzing it, figuring out what worked and what didn't so we get better next time," he said.
