Even Hollywood can't find people to work (DIS)

Does America need more screenwriters?

Walk into a Starbucks on any given afternoon and odds are you'll see one to ten freelancers and dreamers writing scripts on their shiny laptops.

You'd probably sigh — frustrated that there's no room to sit — and silently curse the horde of nobodies aspiring to be somebodies.

But if you'd think that there are too many people aspiring to be in show business, you'd dead wrong.

The fact is: there actually aren't enough people working in the entertainment business right now.

In a recent note to clients, Citi's Tobias Levkovich noted that job openings in the US economy are looking "respectable," and that a number of sectors, including Hollywood, are even actually having a hard time filling jobs:

"[W]orker shortages are showing up in a number of industries including home building, trucking, welding, code programming and even recently in Hollywood as The Hollywood Reporter noted in a September 2nd article that studios are having trouble finding screenwriters, producers, directors and film crews to handle more than 400 scripted shows."

In fact, Executives and agents told The Hollywood Reporter that there are so many scripted original shows in production for broadcast, cable, and streaming outlets that are all fighting for talent.

"There's not enough people, and networks don't have the patience," a high-level studio exec told THR.

Notably, returning back to Levkovich, he also wrote that at the same time that industries are reporting worker shortages, wage pressures appear to be growing.

"Given this backdrop, a zero interest rate policy no longer seems appropriate," he argues.

7 major movies Bill Murray turned down — or just didn’t pick up the phone for

Bill Murray Alberto E. Rodriguez Getty

It’s always fun to think about how a famous role would have been handled if another super star actor had landed it instead.

And it turns out there are a lot of roles Bill Murray had in his grasp.

In the new book “The Big Bad Book of Bill Murray,” author Robert Schnakenberg looks back on the legend’s career in glowing brief snippets, including those projects he turned down. In some cases, he "passed" on roles because he just didn’t feel like checking his voicemail at the time. (Murray no longer has an agent or manager and gets all of his offers via a 1-800 number he’s set up.)

Here are some of the roles that have come Murray’s way over the years.

SEE ALSO: 23 actors who turned down huge movie roles

“Airplane!”

The directors of the iconic 1980s comedy Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker reached out to Murray to play the lead role, Ted Striker. According to the book, Murray turned it down (the filmmakers also went out to David Letterman). Murray later said that “Airplane!” was an example of a project he passed on but knew would be a hit.

“Bad Santa”

Murray was director Terry Zwigoff’s first choice to play despicable strip mall santa/safe cracker, Willie. Zwigoff said that he even got a verbal agreement from Murray. But when it was time to sign a contract the actor was MIA.

“I was told by one of the producers that he really wanted to do it,” Zwigoff said. “I left several messages on his answering machine, but after a few weeks of hearing nothing we eventually moved on.”

The role went to Billy Bob Thornton.

“Batman”

It's hard to believe, but according to the book, Murray was briefly considered by Tim Burton to play the Dark Knight in his 1989 movie. Mel Gibson, Kevin Costner, and Pierce Brosnan were also in contention. The role eventually went to Michael Keaton.

Could you even imagine Murray as Batman?

It might be time for SeaWorld to sell its park in Orlando (SEAS)

seaworld orlando mist fog

SeaWorld's business has been taking it on the chin lately, and one analyst says it may be time for the company to consider cutting bait and ditch its Orlando location.

According to Jason Bazinet at Citi, the struggling amusement park brand is getting outmaneuvered by its competitors in the Florida market, and there may be solid benefits to selling the land and its east coast park.

SeaWorld's rough couple of years started with the CNN documentary Blackfish, and recently got even worse after boy-band One Direction's Harry Styles called for fans to boycott the park, prompting a massive amount of negative consumer sentiment.

The negative PR has led to decreasing attendance and revenue for the company, and Bazinet says that is focused primarily in two of the company's 13 locations.

"Interestingly, the lions’ share of this decline occurred at just two parks: SeaWorld Orlando and SeaWorld San Diego," he wrote in a note to clients. "These two parks represented about 85% of the attendance declines across the firm’s 11 theme parks. Yet, in 2008 these two parks made up only 45% of SeaWorld’s aggregate visitors."

According to Bazinet, SeaWorld has been losing visitors to Universal Orlando. Furthermore, the negative sentiment from Blackfish has been particularly robust in Florida.

This led Bazinet to a radical, and admittedly unlikely, possibility: SeaWorld should sell their Orlando park.

Both Disney and Comcast, owners of the Universal theme parks, have made or are planning expansions to their theme park operations. Bazinet said SeaWorld could possibly sell to either of the two.

The Florida location made the most sense, said Bazinet, because SeaWorld owns the land instead of leasing it like in San Diego and it has experienced the greatest attendance declines. Selling the land would generate $500 million in after-tax value, according to his analysis, against a loss of $25 million in free cash flow.

This would also mitigate the attendance loss percentages. "Without the 407,000 decrease in attendance from SeaWorld Orlando, total attendance would have decreased 2.5% instead of 4.3%," said Bazinet. "Simply selling Orlando gives SeaWorld a comparable 2014 attendance decline as Six Flags (-2% attendance)."

Finally, Bazinet calculates that the revenue generated would go to share buybacks and paying down debt, which would raise the company's share price $6, from around $18 currently to $24, and its free cash flow multiple would jump from 10.5x to 12x.

Bazinet admits this is a nuclear option, but if such substantial attendance losses continue, all options have to be explored.

'Scorch Trails' takes out 'Black Mass' to win the weekend box office

The Scorch Trails 2 Richard Foreman, Jr 20th Century Fox

The September box office got a nice surge over the weekend with a variety of titles for audiences to choose from.

Taking the top spot over the weekend was "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trails" with an estimated $30.30 million, according to pro.boxoffice.com.

Part two from the popular trilogy of young-adult post-apocalyptic novels, the film took in an estimated $12 million on Friday (including a Thursday preview screening), higher than the first film's $11.3 million opening Friday last year. "Scorch Trails" then had a solid 16% spike in its business on Saturday, according to Deadline

black mass1Johnny Depp's new movie "Black Mass," in which the actor is getting some of the best reviews in years for playing Boston crime lord James "Whitely" Bulger, came in second with an estimated $23.36 million. That exceeded the expectations of the film's studio, Warner Bros.

And what looks to be a good sign for Lionsgate, its drug-trafficking thriller "Sicario" starring Emily Blunt and Benicio Del Toro opened in New York and LA over the weekend on six screens with an impressive $75,000 per-screen average, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

That's the top average this year and the best since last year's "The Imitation Game." "Sicario" opens in wide release October 2.

All of the beautiful locations in Matt Damon's new thriller about Mars are real — here are the epic photos that prove it

the martian matt damon

Soon, Oscar-winning actor Matt Damon will be stranded on Mars with no immediate way of escape or communication.

Damon is starring as the joke-cracking, NASA-trained astronaut Mark Watney in the film "The Martian," which is scheduled to debut on October 2 and is based on the best-selling sci-fi novel by Andy Weir.

Any normal person would never survive stranded alone on Mars for over a year, but Watney isn't normal, and he's got a plan. One of the most impressive qualities about Weir's book is how realistic it is. Every place Watney visits on Mars is real, for example.

Take a tour through Watney's Martian wanderings using some of the mind-blowing photos taken from NASA's HiRISE camera, complete with distances and maps from recently released NASA software.

Warning: Although this post excludes specific details about how Watney tries to save himself, it does contain spoilers. If you have not read "The Martian," you can still see epically awesome photos of Mars.

Mark Watney is part of a six-member team that lands in a large northern basin on Mars, called Acidalia Planitia. This is where the crew establishes their home base, called "the Hab." Here's the real life Acidalia Planitia, where shallow pits may have formed from ancient floods or glaciers.

The hab is where Watney spends most of his time. Although Acidalia Planitia is relatively flat, here we can see a young crater in exquisite detail. HiRISE images have false coloring that highlights distinct Martian features like the ejected material in this crater.

Stranded on Mars, Watney had no technology to communicate with the crew in space or NASA back on Earth. But Watney's a clever guy: He realizes that NASA's Mars lander, Pathfinder, is close by in the Martian valley called Ares Vallis. So he retrieves it and uses it to talk to NASA who, he hopes, can help save him. Here's how far Acidalia Planitia is from Ares Vallis.

The 18 best 'Shark Tank' pitches of all time

$

0

emazing lights shark tank

Since "Shark Tank" debuted in 2009, we've seen hundreds of entrepreneurs pitch their businesses to a panel of celebrity investors.

While each Shark may have their own method for evaluating whether a company is worth an investment, they all agree on the fundamentals of a great pitch.

In the best pitches, entrepreneurs sell themselves as much as the product and are prepared to answer any question. The pitches are concise and exciting, and make investors afraid they'll miss out on a major money-making opportunity if they don't make a deal.

A great pitch is far from a guarantee of success, but it's one of the first hurdles to becoming the next hit company out of "Shark Tank." In anticipation of the seventh season's premiere on Sept. 25, we've rounded up the best pitches in the show's history.

Beatbox Beverages, Season 6

Beatbox Beverages cofounders Brad Schultz, Aimy Steadman, and Justin Fenchel entered the tank looking for $250,000 for 10% of their neon-colored, boxed fruit wine company.

After working through the details of how the three built their business, Mark Cuban decided the drink had the potential for viral growth among younger drinkers beyond the company's native Texas and offered $600,000 for a third of the company. Fenchel was grateful for the offer but said they hadn't prepared to give up so much of their company. Cuban asked for a counter. Without skipping a beat, Fenchel asked for $1 million in exchange for a third of the company. They shook hands on the deal.

One of the most common reasons why entrepreneurs miss out on a deal on the show is when they become indecisive or anxious. The Beatbox Beverages team trusted each other and had prepared well enough that nothing caught them off guard, and they ended up with an investment that's uncharacteristically large for the show.

EmazingLights, Season 6

Extravagant pitches filled with performances and props can make for great television, but often are used to hide deficiencies in a company. In the case of EmazingLights, however, a giant cartoon headpiece and a light show was used to demonstrate the company's unusual product, gloves with LED lights in the fingertips that have become increasingly popular at raves.

Founder and CEO Brian Lim's pitch showed the importance of self-promotion when wooing investors. He was able to convince them that the $7 million in annual revenue he'd achieved for his four-year-old company was due to his focus, passion, and long-term vision to crush the competition.

"You are probably one of the, if not the best entrepreneur we've had here," Robert Herjavec told him.

Lim made a deal with Cuban and Daymond John, with Cuban giving $650,000 for 5% and John taking licensing rights and a 20% commission.

Bantam Bagels, Season 6

Husband-and-wife team Nick and Elyse Oleksak left high-paying Wall Street jobs to pursue the excitement of building their own business. They launched stuffed bagel company Bantam Bagels in 2013 and entered the tank looking to turn a New York City outlet into a national business.

Their pitch was noteworthy for having clearly outlined how the company's been successful thus far, what its deficiencies are, and how an investor's guidance and capital can overcome the weaknesses and turn it into a big success. They created the necessary "fear of missing out."

Lori Greiner, who built her career as the "Queen of QVC," saw the perfect opening for another home shopping hit. She got 25% of the company in exchange for a $275,000 investment.

Andy Samberg kicks the Emmys off with an amazing opening monologue

Andy Samberg Kevin Winter Getty

Andy Samberg got the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards to a funny start Sunday night with a mixture of song and dance as well as some hilarious jokes.

The funnyman started the evening with a video opening in which he went through almost all the TV shows currently on air. The premise was that Samberg hadn't seen a single popular TV show and he needed to lock himself away in a bunker to watch them all before hosting the Emmys.

Known for his video work when he was on "Saturday Night Live," he didn't disappoint as he had great cameos from the likes of Jon Hamm and and Wille Forte.

Then we got to the live portion of his monologue and he was awesome in that too.

emmys suck it booksHe touched on everything from the lack of race, age, and female roles still on TV (though we say that it's getting better). He also threw in some election jokes, touching on Donald Trump ("he doesn't seem racist — what else") and Bernie Sanders ("doesn't it always look like he's late for a flight?"

Samberg also gave love to the shows that are leaving us like "Mad Men" and "Park and Rec." He also joked that "True Detective" left too, even though it's still on the air.

He had the audience rolling.

Amy Poehler won't win an Emmy for 'Parks and Recreation'

The Television Academy didn't see fit to give "Parks and Recreation" star Amy Poehler an Emmy for playing the lead on NBC's "Park and Recreation."

On Sunday, Poehler was up for the award one last time after the show's seven-season run. It ultimately went to the very deserving Julia Louis Dreyfus for "Veep."

Poehler played Leslie Knope with sincerity and hilarity and raked in six lead actress nominations with the role. Leslie was a low level government representative in a small town that either didn't care at all about what Leslie was doing or cared way too much.

For some reason, "Parks and Recreation" didn't seem to register with The TV Academy. Including this year, the series had been nominated just twice for Best Comedy during its run.

Meanwhile, Poehler rose to become one of the most respected people in comedy. She currently produces Comedy Central's "Broad City," Hulu's "Difficult People," and NBC's recently canceled comedy, "Welcome to Sweden."

Poehler wasn't the only star on Sunday night who was looking for their first win for a beloved and long running show. Jon Hamm, for example, was up for the lead actor award after seven nominations without a win.

"The Comeback's" Lisa Kudrow, "Grace and Frankie's" Lily Tomlin, "Insider Amy Schumer's" Amy Schumer, and "Nurse Jackie" star Edie Falco were also nominated for Lead Comedy Actress on Sunday.

Jimmy Kimmel ate his Emmy nomination envelope

Jimmy Kimmel Emmys

Jimmy Kimmel was supposed to announce the winner for the lead actor of a comedy series at the Emmys on Sunday night.

He did, but only after he cut and chewed up the Emmy envelope.

Kimmel walked on stage and noted how protective the Emmy committee is of the envelopes before the ceremony begins. But then the cards are just handed, security-free, to hosts like Kimmel who can really give the award to whomever they choose.

"They keep these envelopes in a locked brief case attached to a man's wrist, there's so much security and then they just hand it to me," Kimmel told the audience. "Now really, I can give the Emmy to whoever I want ... What are they going to do, stop the show?"

Kimmel mulled this idea for a moment, then continued.

"I have so much power right now. So now I don't know what to do here. Let's see what's on it."

Kimmel opened the envelope and peeked at the name, then decided to get rid of the evidence.

"You know if I tear the card or I could eat the card, although I don't want to eat the card," Kimmel said.

In the end, Kimmel got to chewing.

"So I'll just cut the name part so the name is right on here now, and I'll eat it," Kimmel said, stuffing the name portion in his mouth and announced the nominees between chews.

Kimmel then pretended to forget which name was on the card after the envelope was in his mouth. "I know it was a man," he said.

In the end, "Transparent's" Jeffrey Tambor took home the Emmy. But fellow nominee Matt LeBlanc got the last say.

This is definitely the year of Amy Schumer. Her Comedy Central series just won the Variety Sketch Series at Sunday's Emmy awards.

Schumer didn't win the Lead Actress Emmy, but it's still a huge deal to have her show win its award against the likes of "Drunk History," "Key & Peele," and "Saturday Night Live" after three seasons of being on TV without much attention from the TV Academy.

"I almost made a stupid sex talk show that nobody wanted and [head writer Jessi Klein] got drunk and told me I had to follow my dreams and make my dream show," an emotional Schumer said after accepting her award.

She later added, "This show fights for what we believe in."

Schumer's nominations (and now win) this year has been compared to Melissa McCarthy's Emmy win for "Mike & Molly" in 2011, the same year she broke out in the film "Bridesmaids."

"Trainwreck" has definitely helped to bring attention to Schumer. Positive word of mouth was good after the opening weekend in July. It went on to earn an 85% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Emmys host Andy Samberg has been showing up throughout the night and providing some funny moments. So far, one of the best is his spoof of the "Man Men" finale.

Doing the meditation pose Jon Hamm made famous in the show's finale as he thinks of the Coke ad, "I'd Like To Give The World A Coke," Samberg says he feels sorry for the losers at the Emmys.

So he imagines a world where he gives every nominee one of the shiny awards.

But things don't work out so well.

It took 'Transparent' star Jeffrey Tambor 7 nominations and 23 years to win an Emmy

At last, Jeffrey Tambor has won an Emmy.

He was considered a shoo-in for the win this year, but he has definitely earned that opportunity – not just because he played an older man transitioning to a woman for Amazon's "Transparent" but because of his history of Emmy nominations.

This win for "Transparent" is special for him, referring to the role as a "responsibility and the privilege."

"I had a teacher who used to say, when you act, you have to act as if your life depends on it," a visibly moved Tambor said. "And now I've been given the opportunity to act because people's lives depend on it."

The acting veteran was first nominated back in 1993 for "The Larry Sanders Show" for his supporting role of Hank Kingsley. He would be nominated three more times for the role by 1998 with no win.

He later was nominated for the role of George Bluth, Sr. on "Arrested Development" – not once but twice in 2004 and 2005.

Finally, it would take "Transparent" (and a lead role) as Maura Pfefferman to snag the Emmy.

He would take the award on Sunday amid a very talented group of actors, which included "Shameless" star William H. Macy, "Louie's" Louis C.K., "The Last Man on Earth" star Will Forte, "House of Lies" actor Don Cheadle, "Episodes" star Matt LeBlanc, and "Black-Ish" lead Anthony Anderson.

Viola Davis used a Harriet Tubman quote from the 1800s to deliver an incredible speech after she made history at the Emmys

viola davis wins emmy

Viola Davis just became the first black woman ever to win the Outstanding Drama Actress Emmy on Sunday.

With her first nomination for ABC and Shonda Rhimes series "How to Get Away With Murder," the star had made history.

The emotional actress started with a remarkably timeless quote.

"In my mind, I see a line. And over that line, I see green fields, and lovely flowers, and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line. But, I can't seem to get there no how. I can't seem to get over that line."

"That was Harriet Tubman in the 1800s," she said. "And let me tell you something, the only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity. You can not win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there."

Although it took beating Taraji P. Henson, who's starring in the most successful TV drama in years, and network mate Kerry Washington had been vying for the honor for the previous two years with her lead role Rhimes' "Scandal," Davis thanked them and other black actresses for helping to "get over that line."

Critics believed that Davis' film work and two Oscar nominations gave her the kind of background that would help to cinch the award.

"Homeland's" Claire Danes, "House of Cards" star Robin Wright, "Mad Men" actress Elisabeth Moss, and "Orphan Black" star Tatiana Maslany were also nominated in the Outstanding Drama Actress category.

'Game of Thrones' finally wins First Outstanding Drama Series Emmy

"Game of Thrones" just won for Outstanding drama at the Emmy awards on Sunday.

This was potentially the show's biggest Emmy night ever, with the most nominations since its run. This year, it recieved 24 nominations and has a grand total of 83 to date.

Creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss accepted the award for the group.

"A few hours from now, the greatest crew on the planet is going to get to work in Belfast, Northern Ireland and Spain," Benioff said. "We wouldn't be standing up here if it wasn't for them. So, thank you all so much."

Nominated five times, it looked like the much-loved series would end up being the victim of The Television Academy's bias against genre series. The last time a genre series won the drama category was "Lost" in 2005.

For "Game of Thrones" to win meant that "Mad Men" would have to lose it out on its final season being honored with the prize. At least The TV Academy had bestowed the win on the advertising series four times previously.

Also nominated for Outstanding Drama Series were "Better Call Saul," "Downton Abbey," "Homeland," "House of Cards," and "Orange Is the New Black."

On Sunday night, the show also won for writing, Peter Dinklage won for supporting actor, and David Nutter won for directing.
