A 22-year-old former addict wrote a script about life in rehab — now his famous dad Rob Reiner turned it into a movie

For the last 30 years Rob Reiner has been known best for directing memorable movies like “Stand by Me,” “The Princess Bride,” “When Harry Met Sally,” and “A Few Good Men.” The titles have brought happiness and entertainment to millions of people.

But the Reiner household has been anything but happy, as the legendary actor/filmmaker’s son, Nick, 22, has been battling drug abuse since his late teens.

Most families would want to keep that part of their lives as hidden from public view as possible. But Reiner admits that at the darkest moments of his son’s addiction to hard drugs he thought of making a movie. However, it was too painful to put pen to page and begin a script.

Rob Reiner Evan Agostini Invision APInterestingly enough, his son came to the same realization as a means to rehabilitate.

While at a rehab center in Los Angeles four years ago, Nick befriended fellow addict Matt Elisofon. The two began writing about their challenges with addiction and the people they met at rehab. Eventually they came up with a script for the movie “Being Charlie,” which they asked Rob to direct.

The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival to a sold out crowd earlier this week.

It’s a mixture of drama and comedy that focuses on an 18-year-old named Charlie (played Nick Robinson of “Jurassic World” fame) as he struggles with addiction from heroin and cocaine. As Charlie jumps in and out of rehab, the aggravation of his actor-turned-politician father (Cary Elwes) grows as he doesn’t know how to help his son.

“It was a real corrective emotional experience,” Nick Reiner told Business Insider following the TIFF screening about making the movie.

It took “Being Charlie” four years to get to the screen (in that time Nick has been sober). Evolving from a half-hour comedy, then an hour dramedy that was rejected by the TV networks, to finally a feature film.

According to Rob Reiner, what the project lacked in its early development was telling both the father and son's sides.

“It needed what he has been through but also what we had been through,” Rob told Business Insider, referring to himself and his wife, Michele, who was sitting beside him.

Michele Rob Jake Romy Nick Reiner Evan Agostini Invision APNick and Elisofon were by Reiner’s side throughout filming. According to Rob, the script was tweaked daily to make the scenes more true-to-life.

“I relied on him,” Rob said of his son. “He’s the heart and soul of the film.”

One of the biggest adjustments came while shooting the film’s ending, where Charlie and his father finally have a heart-to-heart.

Rob and Nick couldn’t find the right tone. After constant rewrites, they finally felt they had something a few days before shooting the scene. It’s a gripping moment where both the father and son open up to each other like they never have before.

The Reiners compare getting the ending right to the whole experience making the film.

“We were healing as we were going along,” Nick said. “And it all doesn’t happen over night, certain things we hadn’t dealt with for a while but we were able to through this movie. It didn’t fix everything, but it really tapped into —“

Nick paused to find the words, then his father, sitting across from Nick, finished for him.

“It forced me to really have to understand what he had been going through for a long time,” Rob said.

“Being Charlie” is currently seeking distribution.

HBO's "Game of Thrones" must have big plans for Samwell Tarly (John Bradley-West) on Season 6.

The show reportedly just cast Sam's entire family.

First reported by "Game of Thrones" fan site, "Watchers on the Wall," James Faulkner, Samantha Spiro, and Rebecca Benson will play Sam's father, Randyll Tarly; mother, Melessa Florent, and sister, Talla Tarly, respectively.

They join "Unreal" star Freddie Stroma, who was cast earlier this month as Sam's brother, Dickon Tarly.

game of thrones downton abbey james faulknerWith more than four decades of acting experience under his belt, Faulkner has most recently played recurring roles on "Downton Abbey" and "Da Vinci's Demons." Some will recognize him as Uncle Geoffrey from "Bridget Jones's Diary" and its sequel.

In addition to a successful career in theater, Spiro's credits include the films "From Hell" and "Beyond Bedlam." She also starred on the popular British series "Psychobitches," "Grandma's House," and "M.I.T.: Murder Investigation Team."

Benson is fairly new to the business, judging from her IMDB profile. She graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in 2011. She went on to appear in a few shortlived TV series and the films "Macbeth" and "Tonight You're Mine."

The last time we saw Sam, he left The Wall and Jon Snow (Kit Harington) then headed off to Oldtown to become a new "maester of the wall."

An HBO representative was unable to confirm the castings for Business Insider.

"Game of Thrones" will return to HBO in Spring 2016.

Victoria's Secret's most iconic model reveals how she hid weight gain from the company

Tyra Banks Victoria's Secret 2005

Victoria's Secret is known for its super svelte models.

The models train very hard to maintain their figures — especially before the big annual fashion show.

Tyra Banks is known for telling the media to "kiss [her] fat a**," her candor, and for not caring about other's opinions of her.

So naturally, the entertainment industry mogul wasn't going to let Victoria's Secret rule her diet. She disclosed to People her secret for hiding her weight gain:

"When I would gain weight and I had a big Victoria's Secret shoot, say they wanted me to shoot the cover of the swimsuit issue, I would just make my hair bigger to make my booty look smaller," she said to the magazine.

"I would be like, 'I ate burgers for two months, and my a** is 10 lbs. heavier,' so I would tell my hairdresser to clip more tracks in and tease it up!"

It's a funny story, but Victoria's Secret places notoriously strict limitations upon the Angels: prospective models must be 5-foot-9 with desired measurements around 34''-24''-34''.

Victoria's Secret has recently come under fire for not hiring plus size models, let alone curvier ones.

The brand faced backlash for its "Perfect Body" ad last year, which featured a row of pencil Angels dressed in lingerie. The retailer later repealed the campaign.

When picking a brand ambassador, many brands make their choice based on the celebrity's best assets.

Only the celebrities with the most stunning legs, teeth, and hair make the cut.

That's why it's important to prepare for what might happen if things go wrong. And insuring those body parts can cost brands over tens of millions of dollars — and in one case $1 billion.

Can you guess which body parts these celebrities had insured?

This slideshow was compiled using information from an infographic kindly supplied by the UK plastic-surgery group MyBreast.

PewdiepieYouTube has exploded since it first launched in 2005, becoming the de facto launchpad for the next generation of celebrities.

We did the math and found YouTube's 20 biggest independent stars based on how many subscribers each one has.

We only focused on independent YouTube stars, disregarding YouTube channels like mainstream music artists' VEVO accounts.

While some of the names may be obvious to YouTube aficionados (big comedy stars like Jenna Marbles and Ray William Johnson come to mind), there were just as many relative unknowns who are building absolutely huge fan bases around niche formats like video-game commentating and unwrapping toys.

There's no doubt that among teens and tweens, these are the new celebrities.

Zooey Deschanel recently had a child (in real life), and while she's on maternity leave, "Transformers" star Megan Fox has been cast to fill in on Deschanel's hit show, "New Girl."

megan foxFox will not be playing Deschanel's role of Jess. Instead, Entertainment Weekly reports, Jess will get called for jury duty halfway through the season and remain out for a long enough period of time that the roommates need a sublet for her — Megan Fox.

Fox will play the new character Reagan, a role the show's executive producer says was written with the actress in mind. The producer said she was interested in Fox since Fox starred in the comedy "This is 40."

Reagan will be a pharmaceutical sales rep who will disrupt the boys' lives. It's not clear how many episodes she'll stick around for or whether she will become a permanent figure on the show, but Entertainment Weekly says Fox will first appear on the sixth episode of the next season, which begins in January.

'Sicario' is a relentless, brutal look at the realities of the drug war

sicario blunt

"Sicario" is as ugly and hopeless as the drug war itself.

The film wastes no time getting to the nitty-gritty as it opens with Kate Macer (Emily Blunt) leading the charge on her own FBI kidnapping task force. During the opening raid, forty-plus corpses are discovered in the walls of a home owned by a vicious Mexican cartel.

A Department of Defense "consultant" (Josh Brolin) then plucks a shell-shocked Kate from the field to join his interagency operation, along with Alejandro (Benicio del Toro), another alleged DoD "consultant."

From the very moment Kate agrees to join her new team, she is systematically lied to. She is told they're going on a trip to El Paso, but wind up in the war-torn streets of Ciuadad Juarez, where limbless bodies hang in public view. Kate is never briefed on the operation and remains entirely in the dark and even when she thinks she's got all the facts, they're not entirely accurate. This is par for the course.

As Kate becomes embedded deeper into this lawless world, her repeated attempts to play things "by the book" are systematically rejected. By the end of the film, the ugly truth is revealed: There's no room for morals or ethics here.

Welcome to the war on drugs.

sicario brolin"Sicario" quite masterfully presents the harsh realities of life during a drug war. We are introduced to characters on all sides, and even dirty cops and cartel members are humanized, which makes the drama incredibly impactful and hard to swallow. This is a film so bleak that there are no rules — anything can happen and to anyone.

"Sicario" is deliberately slow and meanders in its second act to a fault. Kate is a conduit for the audience, so we are just as sheltered by the lack of information as Kate herself, and this can be aggravating at times and make the film feel a bit airy and aimless.

That being said, it does all build to an intense, uniquely shot sequence, and an ending that gave me chills. By then, I had forgiven the film's (thematically intentional) disorientation. It's a hauntingly graceful film, and the methodical pacing ultimately works in its favor.

Emily Blunt is fantastic as Kate Macer and nails the nuance associated with doing all she can to be on the right side of the law and still winding up on the dark side.

Benicio del Toro, however, is the film's greatest asset as a mysterious force whose allegiances are not made explicitly clear until all is said and done. He's equal parts thoughtful and brooding, which makes his rage and determination that much more palpable.

sicario benicioIt's hard to not crack a smile whenever Brolin's character is on screen, as he's constantly busting balls and being so purposefully vague with his team. He's hilarious yet so cold that it's almost alarming that we find him so amusing.

Technically speaking, the film is gorgeous. The urgency of its pulsating score, the gorgeous photography (by cinema legend Roger Deakins), and the commanding performances — every element works towards a full, truly cinematic experience. All the violence is handled in such a way that pops with intensity and dread.

The real beauty of "Sicario" is that it is entirely apolitical and amoral; it presents the horrors and lets them speak for themselves. It's not pushing any sort of agenda, but it's so relentlessly in your face that you'll leave the theater mortified at how real it all might be.

Watch the trailer below. It will be released nationwide October 2.

'Everest' is a harrowing moviegoing experience, but it's missing something

everest jake 1

There's no doubt that "Everest," based on a true story, is a bleak, harrowing experience, but something gets lost in translation.

The film follows more than 20 individuals, portrayed by the likes of Jason Clarke, Jake Gyllenhaal, John Hawkes, and "House of Cards" star Michael Kelly, as they prepare to summit Mt. Everest.

The climbers range from experts and Sherpas to uninitiated amateurs paying tens of thousands of dollars for the opportunity, and their journey is every bit as arduous and deadly as it sounds.

It centers on the real-life infamous 1996 Everest disaster of which there are many first-hand accounts. The film features Jon Krakauer, who wrote probably the best-known account of the events, the book "Into Thin Air," but the screenplay is actually based on Beck Weathers' "Left for Dead: My Journey Home from Everest" and an article written by Peter Wilkinson titled "The Death Zone." And therein lies the problem.

While watching the film, it becomes clear that it is very much an amalgam of source material rather than one narrative.

everest clarke"Everest" is so overstuffed with characters that at times it is impossible to tell who is who. It doesn't help that everyone on screen looks the same (so many beards), and they're all covered head-to-toe in climbing gear, which makes it all the more confusing.

There's simply not enough time in a two-hour film to explore the back stories and get to know all of these people. This makes it hard for the audience to become fully invested, which is disappointing considering this story is so ripe for it.

The screenplay does home in on the familial lives of a couple of key players and really tugs at the heartstrings, but these moments come off as disingenuous when spliced into a narrative otherwise entirely set on the mountain.

It's bizarre to see the filmmakers pick and choose which characters they deem worthy of caring about, and the writers may have been better off consolidating multiple real-life figures into one fictionalized person instead of several.

Visually, the film is quite stunning. It was shot in the mountains of Italy as well as the actual base of Everest in Nepal, and the sly use of CG combined with the location shooting gives the mountain a seriously imposing presence. Any time the camera pans down during an intense traverse, it's hard to not feel the sheer terror deep in your bones.

michael kelly everestThe performances are also quite good, with Clarke and Josh Brolin getting the meatier roles and really delivering. Besides one female climber, the women on-screen (including A-listers Keira Knightley and Robin Wright) are relegated to waiting by the phone for bad news. These sequences are quite manipulative but will certainly have plenty of moviegoers reaching for some Kleenex, which is their intention.

"Everest" is a serviceable film, but it falls short of being the must-see experience it could have been. The great performances make it easy viewing, as does the larger-than-life imagery, but the film is ultimately too busy trying to give its enormous cast ample time on-screen to emotionally resonate. A film this steeped in human tragedy should be easier to connect with.

Watch the trailer below.

I just saw the new 'Doctor Who' premiere early and you're going to love it

peter capaldi doctor who

I was lucky enough to get swept away past a blue box and into a gray theater to see the premiere of Season 9 of "Doctor Who" a little early. And I'm glad I did.

Like many "Doctor Who" fans, I found last season to be a challenge much of the time. With Peter Capaldi taking the helm of the role of The Doctor, it felt like a lot of growing pains and not enough juicy story with appropriate writing for this new man.

Well it took a season to figure out, but after seeing episodes 1 and 2 Thursday evening I can plainly say they've done it. These episodes blow away every single episode from Season 8.

I can't give you any spoilers here prior to Saturday, September 18 (you don't want them, trust me). But I can give you a few solid reasons why you will, indeed, love the first two episodes.

peter capaldi the doctorOne of the most frustrating things about Season 8 of "Doctor Who" was how each and every story lived in its own little vacuum. Sure, Missy rears her head teasily throughout the season leading up to the finale, but otherwise each episode is very self-contained. Sometimes that works, but most of the time last season it left us missing the bigger story that tied us to The Doctor and his mythology.

Without giving too much away, the show makes a return to focusing on The Doctor and his past. And it makes a huge difference in the writing. Seeing The Doctor as a part of the same line as his predecessors instead of something entirely new drew me back into the show. Watching these episodes gave me a familiar feeling in the best way possible.

This happens from the very start. In the first five minutes, writer and executive producer Steven Moffat drops a bomb on everyone that had the whole audience gasping. It sets the stage for a show filled with both nostalgia and a new excitement for the coming season.

Peter Capaldi's Doctor feels much more comfortable in the role. The costuming is different, the attitude's a bit different, and the heroism is more inspiring. Granted, I was surrounded by a bunch of "Who" fans, but there was a ton of cheering for Capaldi's heroics at several points.

From a writing standpoint, I always felt Matt Smith (the former Doctor) dialogue was being written for Capaldi's Doctor last season and it just didn't work. Capaldi doesn't have the same charm or youth, and he's much less wobbly. Moffat also seems to have rectified that issue in the new season. Doctor #12 is finally carving out its own niche.

Doctor Who Season 9

Old villains return, old wounds are opened up, and Clara is back to playing the supporting role that was oddly made more protagonist last year. These two episodes are not about Clara, this is The Doctor's story. He has to face and fight his own demons this time, something we didn't really see him do in Season 8.

There's not much more I can say without giving anything away. The two episodes are jam packed with plot twists and cliffhangers. But rest assured, whether you're a "Whovian" or not, you're going to have a wild ride.

"Doctor Who" airs Saturday, September 18 at 9 p.m. on BBC America.

Sunday's Emmys could just be one of the most exciting years of the awards show.

There's plenty of questions to ask: Will "Game of Thrones" finally win? Will Jon Hamm never win for "Mad Men"? Will Viola Davis make history as the first black woman to win a lead drama role? And will the year of Amy Schumer end with her winning an Emmy?

Business Insider took a look at the major categories and chose who we think will win and how we think should win.

Outstanding Drama Series

Should win:“Game of Thrones”

I don't believe The Academy will let "Mad Men" finish out its run without being rewarded an Emmy. It would be a mark of their failure. At the same time, "Game of Thrones" is having a strong moment right now.

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series

Will win: Jon Hamm
Should win: Jon Hamm

There is no way that The TV Academy could let Mr. Hamm leave an Emmy show once again without rewarding him with the trophy. On the other hand, that's exactly what they've done to him for seven years in a row now.

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series

Will win: Viola Davis
Should win: Viola Davis
We are all ready to name Viola Davis the best actress on TV right now. In addition to fronting the hottest Shonda Rhimes show on TV, Davis has the film pedigree to give her the right kind of added prestige for the award. And even though "Empire" star Taraji P. Henson was able to snatch a place in the list, because of her tour de force portrayal of music mafia matriarch Cookie. But in the end, Davis pulled off some dramatic tricks we're not sure Henson even knows.

In a profile piece on Joseph Gordon-Levitt from The Guardian, the actor revealed that he flew to Russia for a secret meeting with Edward Snowden in preparation for playing the NSA whistle-blower in the upcoming movie “Snowden,” directed by Oliver Stone (opening in 2016).

Gordon-Levitt said the motivation behind the meeting was to “understand this person that I was going to play, observing both his strengths and weaknesses,” he said.

The two met for four hours and though the actor wanted to tape record the meeting, it was advised that he did not.

In fact, according to piece, Snowden’s lawyers didn’t want Gordon-Levitt to admit the meeting had taken place.

“I left knowing without a doubt that what [Snowden] did, he did because he believed it was the right thing to do. That he believed it would help the country he loves,” said Gordon-Levitt.

“Now, as he would say, it’s not for him to say whether it was right or wrong. That’s really for people to decide on their own, and I would encourage anybody to decide that on their own. I don’t want to be the actor guy who’s like, ‘You should listen to me! What he did was right!’ I don’t think that’s my place. Even though that is what I believe — that what he did was right.”

“Snowden” is based on Luke Hardin’s book “The Snowden Files” and Anatoly Kucherena’s “Time of the Octopus.”

Along with Gordon-Levitt, the film stars Shailene Woodley as Lindsay Mills, Snowden’s girlfriend, Zachary Quinto as Glenn Greenwald, and Melissa Leo as Laura Poitras. Greenwald was the journalist and Poitras the filmmaker Snowden leaked the classified documents to.

Nicolas Cage, Scott Eastwood, and Timothy Olyphant also star.

Gordon-Levitt will next been seen in the Robert Zemeckis film "The Walk," in which he'll be playing another real-life figure, Philippe Petit. The film recounts Petit's infamous tightrope walk across New York City's World Trade Towers in 1974.

There have been five theatrically released National Lampoon’s "Vacation" movies, and actor Ethan Embry knows he starred in the one that is regarded by many to be the worst.

In 1997 he played Rusty Griswold in “Vegas Vacation,” where family patriarch Clark (Chevy Chase) packs up the family and heads to Las Vegas.

“It’s a horrible film, let’s face it,” said Embry while talking to Business Insider at the Toronto International Film Festival last week, where he was promoting his new movie “The Devil’s Candy.

Embry was 17 at the time, so instead of trying to sneak into the casinos (as his character does in the movie) when he wasn't filming, to keep out of trouble the actor said on his off days he would work in the production office helping out with wrangling extras and doing other menial jobs.

But his fondest memory is the attention Chase gave him.

“My favorite moment was Chevy teaching me physical comedy up in his dressing room,” the actor told BI. “Sitting there listening to him talk about certain gags and how to pull them off, what the tricks are. It was pretty cool. He was kind to me. I have fond memories of that guy.”

Though Embry doesn’t think the movie is good, he can’t escape it.

“Colleges all across America haven’t forgotten that I was Rusty,” he said with a laugh.

“I can’t go on a road trip without somebody in some college town saying to me ‘Poppa G!’”

Those familiar with Taylor Swift's backstory may have expected her to be an only child.

When she was 14, her father got his Merrill Lynch job transferred to Nashville, Tennessee, so his daughter could pursue a career in country music. The rest is history.

But it turns out another Swift also made the journey to Nashville, and he has been supporting Taylor throughout her amazing career.

Austin Swift, 23, is Taylor's younger brother. And the recent Notre Dame graduate is ready to share some of his sister's spotlight.

Austin is an actor, not a lyricist, and he just wrapped his first movie role in Hollywood.

Here's more about Austin, the other Swift.

Here, with his sister, is Austin Swift. Taylor is 25; he's 23.

He, like his sister, loves cats.

Sometimes the two wear matching onesies.

Matching Christmas onesies is a thing that's happening right now.

Ethan Embry never actually liked the hit movie that made him a star in the 1990s until now

Ethan Embry admitted something to Business Insider when we talked to the actor at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this week — he hasn't always been a fan of "Can't Hardly Wait."

"If we did this interview two or three years ago, and you brought up the movie, my reaction would have been 'Uuuggggghhhh," Embry told BI.

But things have changed.

At TIFF to promote his new movie, the horror “The Devil’s Candy,” the 37-year-old actor admits he’s finally come to terms that his role in the late 1990s teen comedy is one many know him from.

“I now enjoy the celebration of it,” Embry told BI. “It was just work, but I so remember fighting really hard for the role. I feel lucky that I have it as a piece of my past.”

“Can’t Hardly Wait” follows a night in the lives of a group of recent high school graduates as they all coverage at a year-end party. One of the main threads is awkward loner Preston Meyers (Embry) who spends most of the evening trying to profess his love to the school hottie Amanda Beckett (Jennifer Love Hewitt) by attempting to give her a letter her wrote.

can't hardly wait embryThe movie was a disappointment at the box office its opening weekend, coming in fourth. It’s lifetime gross is only $25.6 million

But over the years thanks to home video and constantly playing on paid-cable channels, the film built a cult status that has followed the actors in the film to this day.

Embry said he finally began to acknowledge the movie being a major milestone in his career when he thought of the bigger picture.

“I can appreciate it more now,” he said. “Who the f--k doesn’t want, when they are nearing middle age, to look back on their youth in a celebratory way? So it’s really a nice gift that has been given to me.”

Though Hewitt took to Twitter earlier in the year trying to get momentum for a sequel to “Can’t Hardly Wait” off the ground (Embry since then has said a sequel is only “hypothetical”), it doesn’t seem like Embry has time to worry about it.

Along with “The Devil’s Candy” he’s in pre production on another horror and will be seen next year in the Netflix series “Grace and Frankie,” starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

Showtime’s revival of the cult classic "Twin Peaks" has added a new star to the show as TVLine is reporting that Amanda Seyfried will be playing a “pivotal new character.

There are no specifics about the character yet, though the site is reporting that Seyfried will appear in multiple episodes.

This will be Seyfried’s first time appearing on a TV show since "Big Love" ended its run on HBO in 2011.

The new "Twin Peaks" will be a present-day continuation of the series that became a pop-culture hit in the early 1990s when it aired on ABC.

Kyle McLachlan will return as FBI Special Agent (and coffee/cherry pie enthusiast) Dale Cooper.

Filming is currently underway in Washington state, with "Peaks" co-creators David Lynch and Mark Frost once more having written all the episodes for the show.

Seyfried will be seen next in “Pan” out October 9.
