Reed Hastings

Netflix is one of the greatest underdog success stories at the crossroads of technology and television.

What started as a DVD-by-mail rental service has now spawned a slew of award-winning original television series, made available over 100 million hours of content, and virtually redefined what it means to watch, and create, TV in 2015.

While CEO and founder Reed Hastings is a prominent member of the Silicon Valley tech community, he's largely elusive to the general public.

Scroll through to learn about the man who built the $47 billion online streaming service.

Steve Jobs had a spiritual advisor — here's what it was like the first time they met

Steve Jobs

Alex Gibney’s documentary “Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine” (currently in theaters) has many revelations about the man and the company he co-founded, Apple.

But one that stands out is the first time Jobs met his spiritual advisor, Zen priest Kobun Chino Otogawa.

A big reason why it’s so memorable is that the whole scene, which is a recollection by Otogawa, is told entirely through animation.

Gibney told a room of reporters in New York last week that the idea came after a video of Otogawa talking about Jobs at a 1992 event was brought to his attention. Gibney used Otogawa’s audio from that footage and incorporated black and white animation to visualize the priest’s description of their encounter.

Here’s select stills from the scene along with Otogawa’s story:

“When I was living in California 23 years ago…I answered the door at midnight and there he was in bare feet with long hair and jeans with many holes everywhere. He wanted to see me…18 years old he was.”

JOBSAnim_HiRes_Stills_02“I looked into his eyes, they looked terrible but he’s not crazy. I [had] to talk to him. I put my jacket on and took him on a midnight walk in downtown Los Altos."

JOBSAnim_HiRes_Stills_04"All [the] stores [were] closed. One bar called “The Tea Cup” was open. So we sat down at the counter and I had an Irish coffee and he had juice."

JOBSAnim_HiRes_Stills_05“What he said was, ‘I feel enlightened, and I don’t know what to do with this.” I said, “Oh, that is very wonderful. I need proof of it.”

“A week later he came back with a little metal sheet…I didn’t know what it was…that little thing was the proof. It was a chip of a personal computer. He said, ‘I designed it, my friend Woz helped me. It’s called Lisa.’ Which is the name of his daughter. That is the origin of the Apple computer."

JOBSAnim_HiRes_Stills_06"And [I'm] still not quite sure it was the proof...He always said, ‘Make me [a] monk. Please, make me [a] monk.’ I said, ‘No, not until [I have] proof.’”

JOBSAnim_HiRes_Stills_07The animation was created by Gibney’s 26-year-old son Nick, who is an animator by trade.

According to the Oscar-winning director, the choice to use animation for that sequence was because it’s difficult to tell how truthful Otogawa’s story is.

“The way Kobun Chino tells it is let’s just say a dream-like rendering,” he explained. “So much of the dates and details don’t quite match up, like his idea of how old Steve was.”

Gibney said he decided on a black-and-white hand drawn look because it would suggest that it was a “magical story” but also match the black and white conceit that Jobs had with the Apple products.

Regardless of the accuracy of Otogawa’s recollection, there’s no doubting how important he was to Jobs.

Kobun_Chino_Otagowa WikiAccording to reports, Jobs studied with Otogawa in the 1970s, focusing on Zen meditation. This led to Otogawa being Apple’s corporate spiritual adviser.

In 1991, Otogawa presided over the marriage of Jobs and Laurene Powell.

Otogawa tragically drowned in 2002 trying to save the life of his 5-year-old daughter Maya, who also died.

Les Kaye, a Zen teacher in Silicon Valley who also knew Jobs, told USA Today in 2011 how Jobs reacted when he got word of Otogawa’s passing. “Kobun’s death really struck him,” Kaye said. “He was beside himself.”

It seems Jobs’ search for enlightenment was a struggle. Like Gibney’s film, Walter Isaacson’s biography of Steve Jobs notes the Apple co-founder’s maniacal drive that made working under him extremely difficult. The author writes:

“Unfortunately his Zen training never quite produced in him a Zen-like calm of inner serenity, and that too is part of his legacy."

Watch the 1992 Kobun Chino footage that inspired the animated scene in "Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine" (stars at 29:27 mark):

How not to look like a dork when you use 'Netflix and chill,' the newest slang for talking about hookups

$

nervous couple

“Netflix and chill” has taken the internet by storm the past few weeks and spawned dozens of explainers and think pieces.

If you still haven’t heard what it means, it’s basically teenage slang for “hooking up.” If you are going over to someone’s house to "Netflix and chill," you might be doing just that, but you are certainly also going to get busy.

Its origins

Kevin Roose at Fusion traces the use of “Netflix and chill” as innuendo back to the summer of 2014, when it began to be used by teenage girls to warn others that when a boy asked you to "Netflix and chill," it never actually meant Netflix and chill. These boys always had something else on their minds.

In November 2014, the phrase became officially enshrined as a budding meme when the “Netflix and chill starter pack” hit Twitter and Tumblr.

The different iterations of the meme continue to pop up on social media, but the phrase didn’t explode in popularity until this summer:

Screen Shot 2015 09 04 at 3.04.31 PM

How to use it in a sentence

But in all the hubbub over the word, there’s been a slight of a misconception creeping into the way people talk about “Netflix and chill.”

I’ve heard many people describe it as a “code phrasing for hooking up,” and indeed, it is that. But “code phrasing” seems to imply this sort of secret language people are using to set up dates. The implication is that a teen might ask another teen in front of their parents whether they wanted to “Netflix and chill,” and then they’d chuckle to themselves about the blissful ignorance of their elders.

Take this Tumblr post for instance:

This is funny simply because "Netflix and chill" isn’t actually a slang phrase people use seriously. It's not some newfangled way the teens are arranging their hookups. And if someone does say it, it's more than likely tongue-in-cheek.

Netflix and chill is primarily about calling out how lamely transparent we can be when we are trying to think up an excuse to get a crush into the bedroom. And Netflix and chill represents the perfect distillation of that feeling.

What Netflix thinks of "Netflix and Chill"

We don't know! We tried to reach out for comment but we haven't heard back.

Examples of "Netflix and Chill" in the wild

Looking through some of the best versions of this meme show why "Netflix and chill" has blazed through our collective imagination like wildfire:

10 incredible works of art that were built to be burned to the ground

nk guy art of burning man

There is no other festival quite like Burning Man.

Held for a week each summer in the middle of Nevada's Black Rock Desert, Burning Man is a temporary installation where participants can imagine and build their ideal society.

There's no cell service or internet, money doesn't work there, and artists spend months building enormous pieces that they only intend to burn down by the end of the week.

Writer and photographer NK Guy first made the trip to Burning Man in 1998, hoping that the festival would make for a great stop on a summer road trip.

"In many ways I was totally unprepared for what I'd encounter," Guy told Business Insider in an email. "It was like visiting a foreign country that you'd seen on a postcard — both familiar yet completely surreal. I felt I'd been transported to an alien planet, or to a movie set where the cameras aren't turning."

He's gone back to photograph the event every year since then. Guy has compiled many of his photos in a book called "Art of Burning Man," published by Taschen in August.

He shared some of his favorite shots from the book with Business Insider.

SEE ALSO: I went to Burning Man and it was even crazier than I expected

The Black Rock Desert, situated in a dry lakebed in Nevada, makes for an extremely dramatic backdrop.

Here, a group of burners paddle a rowboat near a pier that was constructed in a throwback to the area's past. A Spanish galleon is docked at the far end of the pier. "You can go from a brilliant golden sunrise to scorching intense heat at lunchtime to a choking dust storm in the afternoon to a pink desert twilight to intensely dark night – all within the space of a day," Guy said.

As you might imagine, photographing Burning Man comes with a daunting set of challenges.

"Dust storms are horrific to breathe in, and not great for fragile camera gear ... You can't drive in your car, so I had to carry around my equipment, including heavy tripods, by bike and foot," Guy said. "If the dust weren't bad enough, I've had years where a third of my shots were blank frames because the heat had melted the foam bumpers in my camera's shutter."

Though many people now travel to Burning Man for the parties, Guy's focus has always been the art produced for the event.

"Burning Man is one of the few places on Earth other than private homes and some religious institutions where nothing, including the art, can be bought or sold. The fact that the art isn't driven by commercial imperatives frees artists to take their work in very interesting directions," Guy said. Cupcake cars created by the "Acme Muffineering Team" certainly fit the bill.

Donald Trump’s 4 most memorable WWE moments

Donald Trump WWE hall of fame

Every presidential candidate has a past, and Donald Trump is no different.

Never one to shy away from the spotlight, he has shined brightest over the decades at World Wrestling Entertainment events.

First, it was when his Trump Plaza in Atlantic City hosted Wrestlemania IV (1988) and V (1999), and he sat front row watching legends like Hulk Hogan and Randy “Macho Man” Savage in their prime. He also was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2013.

But the highlight was when he got into the WWE story lines. And like all things Trump, it was larger than life.

Let’s look back on four appearances by Trump that stand out.

1. Trump clothesline’s Vince McMahon

In 2007, Trump faced off against WWE owner Vince McMahon in Wrestlemania 23 in a bout titled “Battle of the Billionaires.” The winner would shave the loser's head. And, in true billionaire fashion, the two had other people do the fighting. Umaga fought for McMahon against Bobby Lashley, who was representing Trump.

During the action, fed up with McMahon’s antics, Trump ran over to the WWE owner and clotheslined him, followed by a few punches to the temple.

2. Trump drops money down on the RAW audience

Before the Billionaires match, Trump made an appearance on Monday Night RAW, where he gloated about his wealth in front of McMahon by having $10, $50, and $100 bills fall from the rafters.

4. Trump gets a “stunner”

After shaving McMahon’s head following the Billionaires match, Trump stands in the ring celebrating with WWE great Stone Cold Steve Austin, who was the match’s guest referee. When, all of a sudden, Austin gives Trump his patented move, the “Stone Cold Stunner.

9 new movies that could become big-time Oscar winners

black mass wb

With the Toronto International Film Festival kicking off on Thursday, award season is officially off and running.

Many of the movies heading north of the border hope to leave with the momentum that will lead to nominations at the top award shows at the end of the year. Though all of them won't get the buzz to make it to the finish, some of the much-anticipated titles going to TIFF will live up to the hype.

Here are nine that you're likely to hear about when the Oscars roll around.

SEE ALSO: Here are the new movies and TV shows coming to Amazon Prime, iTunes, Hulu, and more in September

1. "Beasts of No Nation"

This drama is based on the civil war in Africa, and it could be a gamechanger for both Netflix — which will release the film simultaneously on its streaming service and in theaters in October — and for its director Cary Fukunaga.

With Oscar buzz for Idris Elba, Netflix's first-ever feature-length award contender will give the company the same clout it has in the TV world. For Fukunaga, who could have a nomination in his future, he'll finally have something on his resume to top his incredible work directing all the episodes of the first season of "True Detective."

2. "Black Mass"

Having already screened at the London and Telluride film festivals to rave reviews, Johnny Depp's portrayal of infamous Boston mobster Whitey Bulger could put him back into the category of top actors in the business. A Best Actor Oscar nomination is a good bet.

3. "The Danish Girl"

Winning the Best Actor Oscar last year for playing Stephen Hawking in "The Theory of Everything," Eddie Redmayne is looking for more Oscar glory in another biopic. In "The Danish Girl" he stars as Lili Elbe, the 1920s Danish artist who was one of the first recipients of sexual reassignment surgery.

A sequel to 1996's hit movie 'Trainspotting' is being made

While premiering his new movie “Steve Jobs” at the Telluride Film Festival over the weekend, director Danny Boyle confirmed that a sequel to his 1996 cult hit “Trainspotting” will be his next project.

The film that launched the career of Ewan McGregor and gave a raw, darkly comedic look at the heroin scene in Edinburgh was a landmark work in the late 1990s due to Boyle’s inventive way of capturing the drug scene and all its roller-coaster euphoric highs and horrific lows.

Boyle told Deadline at Telluride, “All the four main actors want to come back and do it, now it is only a matter of getting all their schedules together, which is complicated by two of them doing American TV series.”

The actors doing American TV from the original film are Jonny Lee Miller, who plays Sherlock Holmes in “Elementary” on CBS and Robert Carlyle is on “Once Upon A Time” for ABC.

Danny Boyle Carlos Alvarez Getty“Trainspotting” was a loose adaption of Irvine Welsh’s novel of the same name. Boyle said that the sequel will be an adaptation of Welsh’s sequel to "Trainspotting," titled "Porno."

Screenwriter John Hodge, who adapted "Trainspotting," is also adapting "Porno," which Boyle is calling "Trainspotting 2" (as of right now).

Boyle points out to Vulture that like the first film "Trainspotting 2" will also be a very loose adaptation from Welsh’s original work.

“The great thing about the way John adapted the original book is that he took the spirit of the book and just ran with it, because really, strictly speaking, it's not an adaptation of the book,” Boyle said. “You shouldn't think of it as an adaptation of 'Porno.' It's more like a 'Trainspotting 2.' There might be some characters we use from the book, but it'll be its own thing, I think.”

Barack Obama had to eat a fish that was already half-eaten by a bear for his 'Bear Grylls' episode

President Barack Obama literally got a taste of roughing it while shooting NBC's "Running Wild With Bear Grylls" in Alaska.

"Today" show had a the first look at POTUS during the taping of the adventure and it was time for a meal. As fans of the show (and Grylls in general) know, meals are rarely very appetizing during these trips. Michelle Rodriguez, for example, had to eat a rat stewed in the actress' urine – a meal Grylls admitted was the worst he had ever consumed.

Obama had less of a heads up on his meal as Grylls had apparently grabbed it earlier in the trip.

"I found this on the river bank, so don't freak out too much," Grylls prepared the president. "This was half-eaten by a bear."

While Obama expected to have a questionable meal with Grylls, he wouldn't have minded if some of the details were left out.

"Bear's a mediocre cook," Obama joked. "But the fact that we ate something recognizable was encouraging. Now, the fact that he told me this was a leftover fish from a bear? I don't know if that was necessary. He could have just left that out."

Obama, 54, joined the British adventurer to take a close look at climate change in Alaska. According to NBC, Obama received a crash course in survival techniques from Grylls before embarking on the trip later this year, according to an NBC press release.

Obama is the first politician to join the NBC series, which has already seen harrowing adventures with Kate Winslet, Kate Hudson, Zac Efron, Michelle Rodriguez, James Marsden, and Channing Tatum.

Tom Brady: I have one of Donald Trump's famous campaign hats in my locker

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady had nothing but praise for real-estate mogul Donald Trump on Tuesday morning.

The embattled football star called into the Boston sports-radio station WEEI, on which he discussed his so-called "Deflategate" scandal and, among other things, Trump's presidential campaign.

"It's pretty amazing what he's been able to accomplish as an entrepreneur and then as a television star and now running for political office," Brady said of Trump.

He added: "I think people who can do those types of things and transition into different arenas and still have that type of appeal and carryover. He's obviously appealing to a lot of people."

Brady also confirmed that he does, in fact, have one of Trump's famous "Make America Great Again" campaign hats in his locker.

He said that Trump sent it to him through Patriots owner Robert Kraft and that he has known Trump since he judged one of the Republican businessman's Miss USA beauty pageants back in 2002.

"I've known him for a long time," Brady recalled. "And he always gives me a call and different types of motivational speeches at different times. So now that he's running for president, he sent me a hat. And he gave it to [Kraft] a couple weeks ago. And so it found its way to my locker."

Here's a purported photo of Trump's hat in Brady's locker:

Trump has long argued that Brady was unfairly treated by the National Football League, which punished him after investigating the "Deflategate" scandal. Brady was accused of intentionally letting footballs be deflated below NFL standards during a playoff game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Brady and his fans scored a major coup last week, however, when Brady's four-game suspension was overturned by a federal judge. Asked about the ruling at an unrelated press conference last Thursday, Trump gushed about how he and Brady are close friends.

"Tom Brady is a very good friend of mine. He's a great guy. For those of you that don't know him, he's a very honorable guy and an honest guy and a truly great athlete. He is really a very good friend of mine. I just spoke to him a little while ago and he is so thrilled and so happy," Trump said.

On Tuesday, Brady also called Trump a close friend and said they used to regularly play golf together before the quarterback had children.

"Honestly, he's a good friend and we've had a lot of time on the golf course together over the years. Probably not as much recently, but in my younger days, when I could have more time that I could spend doing those types of things," he said. "We spent a lot of time golfing together and so forth."

But Brady wasn't quite ready to fully endorse Trump's campaign.

"I don't know. Am I going to vote for him?" he said when asked if Trump has his vote. "That's a good question."
