Burning Man Costumes

Burning Man 2015 officially started on Sunday.

Even as photos of this year's festival have started trickling onto social media, many are still baffled by what exactly goes on at the week-long event.

Two years ago, I went to Burning Man for the first time.

While I had attended manydifferentfestivalspreviously, Burning Man was unlike anything I had ever seen.

Burning Man, as the website proclaims, is "an annual art event and temporary community based on radical self expression and self-reliance in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada."

The year I attended, so did more than 61,000 other people, many of them in the tech industry. This year, more than 70,000 people are expected — myself included.

While many people go for the full seven days, I previously did only four, so my experience may have been different from that of others. But the beauty of Burning Man is that all attendees can have whatever kind of experience they want.

For me, I loved biking around during the hot desert days looking at all of the beautiful art installations constructed in the middle of nowhere and taking advantage of strangers' generosity by way of wine tastings, zip lines, and fried chicken.

For others, the festival comes alive at night. As the sun goes down, the lights of Black Rock City come up and the pulse of the music keeps people awake until well into the following day.

Since most people who haven't been to Burning Man seem to be confused by what it actually is, here are some photos that sum up my trip two years ago. After a hiatus last year, I'll be heading back to the Burn in a few days, so check Business Insider for full coverage.

Here's what Burning Man is really like >>

It all started with this: a cheap leopard suitcase I purchased on the streets of New York City. Everything you bring to Burning Man is at risk of getting seriously dirty or of disappearing. I felt OK sacrificing this.

I packed it full with costumes, sunscreen, sunglasses, flashlights, food, and other items on the official checklist. Everything is in plastic bags to keep it clean from the impending desert dust.

Upon arrival in Reno, Nevada, the closest airport, I hit a Walmart to grab last-minute necessities such as jugs of water. Walmart was clearly prepared for all of the "Burners" driving from Reno.

This rude, in-your-face comedy is also one of the most heartbreaking movies of the year

tomlin sage grandma

For a crude sounding movie about a foul-mouthed granny taking her granddaughter to get an abortion, "Grandma" winds up packing quite the emotional wallop.

"Grandma" is certainly rude and in-your-face, but that's not its only function. It's not trying to be "Bad Grandpa. It's a small-scale human drama that just so happens to have a biting sense of humor.

The film opens with Elle (Lily Tomlin, in a career best performance) brutally breaking up with her much younger girlfriend Olivia (Judy Greer, spouse of the summer). We immediately get the sense that Elle is quite a handful, but under that icy exterior is a lonely, pained woman, as evidenced by the next scene in which she bawls, alone, in her shower.

Her granddaughter Sage (Julia Garner) unexpectedly shows up at her doorstep, pregnant and in need of $600 for an abortion. If Elle were a "normal" grandma, she would simply hand over the money, but she's just as broke as Sage, and thus begins their epic journey to pull together the cash.

The film then becomes a guided tour of Elle's life as she reconnects with several people from her past in an attempt to collect the money for Sage's abortion. She rekindles relationships with ex-lovers and old friends, conjuring up old bad blood in the process, and with each new interaction, another layer is peeled from Elle's cynical mystique.

tomlin grandma boyfriend"Grandma" is split into chapters, each marked by a single word that appears on-screen and sets up the action. The writing throughout the film really speaks for itself — Weitz's screenplay brilliantly reveals character details naturally via dialogue rather than ho-hum exposition. By the end of the film, we really know (and care about) these people, as they are fully formed beings with clearly defined motivations and backstories.

There's one segment in particular featuring the incomparable Sam Elliot that is so masterfully handled it stands out as one of the best scenes of the year. Elliot is only on-screen for a few minutes, but he turns in such stellar work that it'd be criminal if he didn't receive recognition from The Academy.

If William Hurt pulled off an Oscar nomination with his less than 9-minute part in "A History of Violence," Elliot should be a lock. In mere minutes, Elliot gives an emotional, transcendant performance that grounds the film and gives us new perspective on its protagonist.

"Grandma" is a rare film that features just as many laughs as it does powerful, emotionally charged moments. Every performance from the leads down to the most minor supporting characters is terrific, and Tomlin leads the charge with gusto. Sometimes the smallest films leave the biggest impressions.

nbc coach new shows 2015

NBC had decided not to go forward on its reboot of popular 90s comedy "Coach," an individual with knowledge of the decision told Business Insider.

Creative differences between the producers and NBC led to the decision, Deadline reported.

Apparently, NBC gave producers at Universal Television the go-ahead to shoot the pilot. The new show finds Coach Hayden Fox (Craig T. Nelson) joining his son to coach an Ivy League school's football team. Written by the original series creator Barry Kemp, the pilot reportedly received a mixed response with some saying it felt dated.

The creative issues became too much for NBC. According to the report, Nelson will be paid for the full 13-episode order. His co-stars – Andrew Ridings, Morgan Smith and Malcolm Barrett – will be paid for just the produced pilot episode.

Universal TV is reportedly shopping the project around to other networks and outlets.

"Coach" was one of the most popular returning shows on BI's list of most-socialed returning TV series. It ranked No.3.

NBC and Universal TV representatives had no comment.

'Fear the Walking Dead' ratings down 2 million viewers from its record-breaking premiere

fear the walking dead bright

Sunday's episode of AMC's "Fear the Walking Dead" failed to hold on to its huge, record-breaking ratings from its premiere last week. But it certainly faced some stiff competition.

Episode 2 earned a 4.1 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18 year-old to 49 year-old demographic. That's 16 percent lower than last week's record-breaking 4.9 rating, according to preliminary Nielsen ratings.

The second episode was watched by 8.2 total viewers, which means it lost 1.9 million viewers from the 10.1 who showed up for last week's debut.

Certainly, there are a few factors to consider here. It is expected that a show will lose viewership from its premiere episode. Very, very few shows see the kind of week-to-week ratings increases that Fox's "Empire" did.

Also, there was some really stuff competition on Sunday, including the MTV VMAs and a pre-season "Sunday Night Football" game.

Sorry Burners, Elon Musk says he never toured a 4,000 acre property to build a permanent Burning Man city

Elon Musk

Burning Man devotees dreaming of a permanent city will have to keep looking for someone to bankroll the project.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who had been rumored to have toured an investment property that could host a permanent Burning Man community, has not in fact visited the property, according to a Tesla spokesperson.

Musk and Google co-founder Sergey Brin were both cited in a recent New York magazine report that said the two were rumored to have toured a 4,000 acre property in Northern Nevada where organizers of the Burning Man festival hoped to create a permanent community.

"Elon has not toured this property," a Tesla spokesperson said in an email.

Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur who founded SpaceX and is the CEO of electric car maker Tesla, is a regular attendee at the week-long Burning Man festival. The annual festival in Nevada's Black Rock desert attracts artists, nudists and partiers, and began this week.

The "Burning Many Fly Ranch city" is envisioned as a mix of homes and communal spaces built to blend into the desert where the Burning Man principles of “radical inclusion” and “gifting” would be the law of the land year-round.

NBC is back in business with Donald Trump. That was quick.

Just about two months after NBC declared it's "ending its relationship" with the Republican presidential candidate after he made controversial statements about Mexican immigrants, the network announced that he will be appearing on the Sept. 11 episode of "Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon."

According to the network's release, Trump "will sit down with Fallon and discuss his campaign and other issues of the day."

Last month, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt softened the network's stance on Trump.

“I don’t think somebody who is running for President and might possibly be the next leader of the free world should be banned from activity with NBC,” he said.

But as far as Trump's return to “Celebrity Apprentice," Greenblatt sounded resolute.

“I’m going to end this with two words,” he said. “Absolutely not.”

Trump was just part of the announcement of guests for Fallon's fall premiere week. Here's the full schedule from NBC:

Wednesday, Sept. 9

Thursday, Sept. 10

The director of 'Going Clear' says Scientologists have been coming after him 'pretty hard'

Alex Gibney

As director Alex Gibney prepares for the release of his latest movie, “Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine,” it’s hard to pass up a chance to talk to the Oscar winner about his other recent film, the HBO Scientology documentary “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief.

At a recent screening of his Steve Jobs doc, Business Insider spoke with Gibney and asked him if he’s dealt with the same harassment by members of the Church of Scientology that former members of the church shown in the film say they have received.

“They’ve come after the people in the film much harder than I,” Gibney told Business Insider. “But they’ve come after me pretty hard and it’s a strange thing to be vilified 24/7. There is a set of danger around that and I have to be concerned.”

Since Gibney premiered “Going Clear” at the Sundance Film Festival in January, Scientology has done everything from running a full-page ad in The New York Times in an attempt to discredit him to even using social media to run anti-Gibney videos.

Here’s one example:

At the time of the film’s release, Gibney told Business Insider there was a simple motivation behind the church doing this: “They are playing a PR game with [their members] to say, ‘Look at these evil people who are attacking us. Look how valiantly we are trying to defend our organization.’”

goingclear01Like “Going Clear,” “Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine” is not a flattering piece.

Along with chronicling the successes that made Jobs an icon before his untimely death in 2011, the film also delves into his denial that he was the father of his daughter Lisa (which was later proven by a paternity test) and his unflattering treatment of his employees, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak before they created the company.

But Gibney sees neither as attack films.

steve jobs documentary final“They are about human psychology,” he tells us. “They are really about power and abuses of power.”

However, exposing the darker side of things comes with a price.

Gibney told Business Insider that he’s not just received pushback from Scientology but from Apple as well. Neither the company nor Jobs’ widow, Laurene, would cooperate with the making of the movie.

However, with Scientology he says he has to be “cautious.”

“The Scientology people are tough, what they try to do is they try to play with your head and destabilize you.”

When asked if there have been instances where he’s had to deal with Scientology members outside of the world of internet trolls, Gibney would only say, “You know that the cyber sometimes become physical.”

In an email to Business Insider, a spokesperson for Scientology calls Gibney's accusataions, "another publicity stunt by Gibney’s PR machine to manufacture interest in his grossly inaccurate and fictional film."

"The Church of Scientology has been very public and very transparent in its response to Gibney’s 'documentary,'” the email went on to say. "Our Freedom Magazine website has published videos and white papers exposing the fraud Alex Gibney is perpetrating on his audiences, as well as all the material he ran from because it totally undercut his film. Please watchto see how he avoided the Church for two years."

The email also stated: "Because Mr. Gibney remained anything but objective, the Church has compiled the unvarnished truth in the form of video footage, court documents, publicly available records and testimonials by pertinent individuals who represent Scientology, and were intentionally ignored by Mr. Gibney and HBO.It concluded: "Under the guidance of the leader of the religion, Scientology has expanded faster in the last 10 years than in its previous 50 and is the fastest-growing religion of the 21st century."

Apple has not responded to Business Insider's request for comment.

In 1989, Trump starred opposite Bo Derek in a crime fantasy film titled "Ghosts Can't Do It."

Starting today, Stephen Colbert will direct you to your destination on Waze, the community-based traffic and navigation app owned by Google.

“For years, I navigated the roadways using a compass, a sextant and the guidance offered by the stars,” said Colbert in a statement from CBS. “But now I can just listen to my own dulcet tones instructing me on Waze.”

Colbert debuts on "The Late Show" on September 8.

Until September 22, users will have the option of choosing Colbert to dictate driving instructions.

Or, if you prefer the voice of Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots or Neil Patrick Harris, they will also be available to guide you while on the road.

This is not the first time Waze has partnered with celebrities to serve as the voice of Waze. Earlier this summer, the app teamed up with KFC's Colonel Sanders and then Arnold Schwarzenegger to promote the reboot of the "Terminator" series.

Kermit the Frog trades Miss Piggy in for a hotter, younger girlfriend named Denise

Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy have broken up.

Yes, that’s the sad plot line of the new "Muppets" show which is set to air on ABC in September. Even more astounding, Kermit seems to have already traded Miss Piggy in for a newer, younger model.

People obtained photos of Kermit’s new girlfriend on the show, Denise, a hot red-headed piglet. Denise is reportedly the head of marketing at ABC.

Don’t feel too sad for Miss Piggy, though. People reports that she's been hanging around actor and ex to Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth. And "The Hunger Games" actor is set to make a guest appearance on "The Muppets."

The breakup is a brilliant marketing ploy on ABC's part to hype up the show before it airs. The "Muppets" is being positioned as a funny "Office-style" show that may not always be family-friendly. It treats the characters everyone knows and loves like real people and ABC is giving the muppets the kinds of dramatic plot lines that typically flare up in reality TV shows.

We weren’t sure how to reach Kermit or Miss Piggy for comment.

The world's 2nd highest paid actor Jackie Chan reveals the biggest challenge in making 'Dragon Blade' and the truth about John Cusack's horrid sword skills

Jackie Chan Stuart C. Wilson Getty

Jackie Chan is known best in America as an international action star who does his own stunts and has comedic chops.

In his homeland of China, he’s know for all those things, plus being the owner of a successful theater chain, merchandise, and a Segway dealership

All of this has led him to be the second-highest paid actor in the world for 2015, according to Forbes. A striking achievement seeing he hasn’t had a hit in the US since the reboot of “The Karate Kid” in 2010.

But with China being the largest movie market behind the US an actor no longer has to be a viable name in Hollywood to find success.

15_Jackie Chan as Huo An_2This is evident with Chan’s latest movie, “Dragon Blade,” which is being released for the first time in the US this Friday after having played all over the world, including China where it’s one of the biggest hits of the year having grossed over $116 million

“I’ve been very fortunate that my recent films have all been hits in China,” Chan told Business Insider via email. “Audiences are willing to take a risk on me, knowing that I’ll give them something different every time.”

“Dragon Blade” is a period action thriller set on the ancient “Silk Road” desert trade route. Chan plays a leader of a squad that protects the route who teams with an exiled Roman general (played by John Cusack) to go up against evil Roman legion leader Tiberius (Adrien Brody).

The action, big-name stars, and sequence not usually seen in the genre — like when Chan and Cusack sing an old Roman anthem with their troops — made the film number one at the box office in China when it opened in mid-February.

But the film took 7 years to get off the ground. In 2009, Chan met with rising Chinese director Daniel Lee who pitched the superstar actor the period film set on the Silk Road. They agreed that Lee would direct the movie and Chan would oversee the fight sequences as its “action director.” Lee is known in China for action films like “14 Blades.”

Chan takes the blame for the long delay; he says he had to find an opening in his schedule to take on “Dragon Blade.” But he points out that if it wasn’t for the delay, they likely wouldn’t have gotten Brody as his co-star.

“One day I got a message, out of the blue, from Adrien Brody asking if we will ever have the chance to work together,” Chan recalled. “I told him I was preparing to make this movie and that we could work together right away. I sent him the synopsis in the morning and got a call that night agreeing to work together. It was fate.”

Adrien Brody as Tiberius_16Chan complimented Brody’s dedication to training for the fight sequences. The Oscar winner asked Chan for videos of sword fighting so he could practice the techniques with a broom before he arrived in China.

Cusack, however, needed a little more work.

“John is really good at kickboxing but not very experienced with weapons,” wrote Chan, who said he had to teach Cusack from scratch how to use the swords and knives his character handles in the film.

Though Chan added, “When it comes to acting, there isn’t anything I can teach him.”

Dragon Blade fallChan said the greatest challenge when making “Dragon Blade” was the setting. Shot in the Gobi Desert, the heat and sandstorms took a toll on everyone. “Just keeping your eyes open during the fighting scenes was painful,” said Chan, who during the sandstorms assisted in keeping the horses calm.

Though the US will see Chan in action mode once more with “Dragon Blade,” the 61-year-old says he wants to begin focusing on more dramatic roles going forward.

But don’t expect him leaving the action genre completely. He said another installment of “Rush Hour” is not out of the question— if he and co-star Chris Tucker can “find the right story that will satisfy the audience.” US audiences will also see him next in an action comedy opposite Johnny Knoxville titled “Skiptrace.

“The genre is still important to me because it’s where I came from,” Chan said of action movies. “I will still continue to do [them].”

“Dragon Blade” opens September 4.

Kim Kardashian corrected that viral Instagram post promoting a drug after the FDA took it down

kim kardashian

Kim Kardashian has put out a corrected Instagram post about a morning sickness drug she's promoting, which the FDA had ordered taken down because it failed to mention the drug's health risks.

The reality TV star, who is pregnant with her second child, took to Instagram earlier this month to share a glowing testimonial about the morning sickness drug DICLEGIS, for which she's a paid spokeswoman.

"OMG. Have you heard about this? As you guys know my #morningsickness has been pretty bad. [My doctor] prescribed me #Diclegis. I felt a lot better and most importantly, it's been studied and there was no increased risk to the baby," Kardashian wrote to her 42 million Instagram followers. She also tweeted the post to her more than 34 million followers on Twitter.

But in a letter dated August 7, the FDA ordered that the drug's manufacturer, Duchesnay USA, take the post down.

"The social media post is false or misleading in that it presents efficacy claims for DICLEGIS, but fails to communicate any risk information associated with its use and it omits material facts," the letter reads.

Kardashian's updated post, below, read in part: "I guess you saw the attention my last#morningsickness post received. The FDA has told Duchesnay, Inc., that my last post about Diclegis (doxylamine succinate and pyridoxine HCl) was incomplete because it did not include any risk information or important limitations of use for Diclegis."

#CorrectiveAd I guess you saw the attention my last #morningsickness post received. The FDA has told Duchesnay, Inc., that my last post about Diclegis (doxylamine succinate and pyridoxine HCl) was incomplete because it did not include any risk information or important limitations of use for Diclegis. A link to this information accompanied the post, but this didn’t meet FDA requirements. So, I’m re-posting and sharing this important information about Diclegis. For US Residents Only. Diclegis is a prescription medicine used to treat nausea and vomiting of pregnancy in women who have not improved with change in diet or other non-medicine treatments. Limitation of Use: Diclegis has not been studied in women with hyperemesis gravidarum. Important Safety Information Do not take Diclegis if you are allergic to doxylamine succinate, other ethanolamine derivative antihistamines, pyridoxine hydrochloride or any of the ingredients in Diclegis. You should also not take Diclegis in combination with medicines called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), as these medicines can intensify and prolong the adverse CNS effects of Diclegis. The most common side effect of Diclegis is drowsiness. Do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or other activities that need your full attention unless your healthcare provider says that you may do so. Do not drink alcohol, or take other central nervous system depressants such as cough and cold medicines, certain pain medicines, and medicines that help you sleep while you take Diclegis. Severe drowsiness can happen or become worse causing falls or accidents. Tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions, including if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Diclegis can pass into your breast milk and may harm your baby. You should not breastfeed while using Diclegis. Additional safety information can be found at www.DiclegisImportantSafetyinfo.com or www.Diclegis.com. Duchesnay USA encourages you to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

A photo posted by Kim Kardashian West (@kimkardashian) on Aug 30, 2015 at 6:01pm PDT on

DICLEGIS is intended for the treatment of nausea and vomiting in pregnant women who do not respond to other ways of managing these symptoms. But the drug has not been studied in women with severe morning sickness, or hyperemesis gravidarum, and is not recommended for women taking certain kinds of allergy medications or antidepressants.

The drug also comes with a warning about activities requiring mental alertness, and the most common side effect is drowsiness.

The FDA's letter called for Duchesnay to "immediately cease misbranding DICLEGIS and/or cease introducing the misbranded drug into interstate commerce," as well as a written response describing how it will spread "truthful, non-misleading, and complete corrective messages about the issues discussed in this letter to the audience(s) that received the violative promotional materials."

Laney Landsman, a spokeswoman for Duchesnay, confirmed that Kardashian's posts had been removed immediately, The Washington Post reported.

Given the fact that you can only convey a certain amount of information in a given space, social media poses a challenge for accurately communicating information about drug safety. And due to safety disclosure requirements, a lot of companies have steered clear of using it entirely.

But that doesn't stop individuals from spreading questionable information.

"Outside of a promotional context, Kim Kardashian, if she jumped on Twitter and made these statements, and had absolutely no relationship to the company, that would be fine," Kevin Madagan, counsel at Reed Smith, told the Post. However, "You need to be careful about how you go about doing it," he said.

Here's 5 things Derek Waters has learned from hosting 'Drunk History'

Over the life of "Drunk History," its host, director, and executive producer Derek Waters has sat through nearly 100 boozy narrations. Each one looks hilarious and fun on television, but are naturally filled with challenges while taping.

"I’ve figured out certain techniques," Waters told Business Insider. "If you’ve ever hung out with someone that drinks, you know that emotions can happen, attitudes can happen."

D.H._106_381_Kristen Wiig as Patty Hearst"Drunk History" returns on Tuesday for its third year on Comedy Central (five years overall if you count its Funny Or Die run). Each episode features three stories told by inebriated narrators and reenacted by performers. And, yes, the answer to the most-asked question about "Drunk History" is the narrators are really drunk.

The show is so fun to watch that a who's who of Hollywood's A-List have appeared on the series, including Jack Black, Connie Britton, Michael Cera, Courteney Cox, Laura Dern, John Lithgow, Jason Ritter, Winona Ryder, Kristen Wiig, Luke Wilson, and Owen Wilson.

"We’re trying to make a history show, not a comedy show," Waters said. "And it just so happens that comedy comes out of the way we’re trying to tell the history."

But when BI points out the combination of the drunk narrators, the over-the-top costumes, and stylized reenactments, Waters admits, "OK, we're definitely going for comedy, too."

One narration session can take between four and six hours to shoot. And with the inherent hiccups that can occur, Waters has come up with some best practices when it comes to shooting the sessions.

drunk_history_3292_Jake Johnson as William Travis and Chris Parnell as Jim Bowie1. Bring on people Waters has already tossed a few back with, so he knows what to expect.
"I’m very cautious of that," he said. "Most of the people on the show I drink with, so I know how they’re going to be. If I know someone who is really funny but has a problem, I don’t approach them. I just don’t mess with that."

paget brewster drunk history2. Narrators are asked not to drink before the crew arrives.
"So you don’t get too drunk," Waters said. "I’m not trying to be like, ‘Look how drunk they are!’ I’m trying to tell history in a new way and not just because they’re, say, upside down talking."

HDDRU301A_07 Josh Hartnett as Clark Gable3. No one likes to drink alone.
"I share a drink with them to get them comfortable," the director said.

matt gourley drunk history

4. Everyone has their limit.
"There’s several stages of drunk," he explained. "and you have to make sure you’re not on the last one."

HDDRU301A_28 Maya Rudolph as Griselda Blanco5. There's always another job for lightweights.
"I don’t want people to get sick," Waters said. "I don’t want people to fall. I also don’t want them to tell a regular story. They have to be a little slurred and a little messed up or we should just watch the history channel. So, no one is drinking for the first time. But if someone is like, ‘Yeah, I don’t drink that much, but I love the show.’ Then, ok, maybe they can be in the reenactment."

So, yes, the show can be more complicated than it looks on TV. And as it embarks on its third season, there's some proof that people are taking notice of the hard work. This year, it earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series.

"It feels like this little thing I did for fun, but the more I grew with it, the more I wanted to say I have a chance to say something right now," Waters said of the nom. "What do I want to say? Maybe, I can tell stories that teach people stuff. So, to have the Academy recognize that it's not just a comedy show, it's something new and different, I just take it as a really sweet compliment."

The third season of "Drunk History" debuts Tuesday at 10:30 p.m. on Comedy Central.

Kim Kardashian has fixed that viral Instagram post that the FDA demanded she take down

Kim Kardashian has put out a corrected Instagram post about a morning sickness drug she's promoting, which the FDA had ordered taken down because it failed to mention the drug's health risks.

The reality TV star, who is pregnant with her second child, took to Instagram last month to share a glowing testimonial about the morning sickness drug DICLEGIS, for which she's a paid spokeswoman.

Amazon Prime Video now offers something Netflix says it will 'never' allow (AMZN)

Jeff Bezos

Amazon just announced a video streaming perk that Netflix has sworn it would never allow.

If you're one of the approximately 40 to 60 million people who pay for Prime, Amazon's $99-a-year membership club, you can now download movies and TV shows on your smartphone or tablet for offline viewing.

This is really handy if you're taking a plane trip and don't want to pay for Wi-Fi, or you know you're going to be somewhere else where wireless is not available.

Previously, Amazon only offered this feature for people who owned one of its line of Fire tablets, but it now applies to Android and Apple devices too. Not all of the video on Amazon Prime Video is available for offline viewing, but a pretty hefty selection is (check out the list here).

Late last year, a Netflix exec told TechRadar that offline viewing was "never going to happen" for its service. Netflix argues that being able to download videos for offline viewing is a short-term fix for the long-term problem of spotty Wi-fi availability.

A Netflix spokesperson confirms that it doesn't plan on offering offline viewing:

"With Internet speeds climbing and WiFi available in more and more places, the ability to stream live wherever you are will make downloading less relevant over time. Our focus is on delivering a great streaming experience."

For Amazon, it's all about driving retail

This capability is Amazon's latest attempt to make its membership club more attractive. After Amazon spent more than $100 million on original video content last year, CEO Jeff Bezos put it bluntly when talking about Prime's award-winning show "Transparent": Amazon is the first company to use a Golden Globe to sell toilet paper

In other words, Amazon loses a lot of money on the TV and music streaming services, but it has built them up to make Prime more addictive. Users are more likely to fork over the big bucks if they already pay for Prime: Members may spend more than double on the site per year than non-members do, according to an analysis from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners in January.

Although Amazon Prime Video still doesn't offer as many options as Netflix, the company made sure to highlight the fact that some of the movies available for offline streaming — like "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" — are ones that Netflix will be losing because it didn't renew its five-year deal with Epix, a cable network that previously allowed the service to offer a bunch of blockbuster films.

Chris Brown is being sued after a fan got shot at one of his performances

Chris BrownAfter allegedly getting shot at a concert earlier this year, a man is suing pop star Chris Brown, TMZ reports.

Paul Briley, a fan who attended Brown's Jan 11 show at a San Jose nightclub claims the singer failed to provide enough security, which ultimately led to the violence.

According to TMZ, Brown was on stage when shots were fired and five people were injured.

Brown was unharmed.

Briley alleges that because of multiple incidents at Brown concerts, the singer should have had more security that night. Brown's people, however, aren't having it.

Nicole Perna, who represents Brown, issued this statement to Billboard: "It is a poor reflection of our society that violence is so prevalent and it is always a tragedy when someone is physically harmed," she said.

"However, this is a completely frivolous lawsuit. We expect that the case will be dismissed and in future, to avoid these reoccurring meritless lawsuits directed at Chris Brown."

Perna said they plan to seek damages from "all parties and their lawyers."

In August last year, former hip-hop mogul Suge Knight and two others were shot at a pre-VMA party hosted by Brown. Brown later tweeted his frustration: "It's disappointing that we as a society can't have fun or enjoy ourselves without any altercations sometimes."

A month later, a fan was stabbed while Brown was performing at a Drake and Lil Wayne after-party in Hollywood.

Briley's claim comes just over a month after Brown made headlines for being stranded in the Philippines after he was accused of skipping out on a concert he was paid to perform.

million dollar listing san franciso finale preview

The tension rises on Wednesday's season finale of Bravo's "Million Dollar Listing: San Francisco." And Business Insider has an exclusive preview of the fireworks.

Justin Fichelson and Roh Habibi's argument continues and things really get heated. The argument started on last week's episode when Fichelson dropped in on Habibi's open house only to nitpick the property. Well, Habibi wasn't having it.

Habibi, whose family are refugees from Afghanistan, has worked very hard for everything he has. So, it sort of bothers him that Fichelson grew up with money and easy connections due to being born and raised in San Francisco.

"This is the thing with people who have a silver spoon, man," Habibi tells Fichelson. "And because you're not winning this, it burns."

million dollar listing san francisco s1 finale

These two guys haven't really been too friendly from Day 1. After meeting Habibi for the first time, Fichelson realized that his co-star had blocked him on Instagram. Who does that, he thought? It also bothered him that Habibi talks such a big game, but lives in Hayward, a city located in the East Bay, and not San Francisco proper.

"Oh, yeah, you're a big agent," Fichelson says to Habibi. "You live in Hayward. You've never lived in San Francisco. So, f--k you. What did you make last year?"

Watch the preview below:

A North Carolina Marine made a viral video asking Ronda Rousey to his Marine Corps Ball, and she said yes

Ronda Rousey says she's prepared to make a North Carolina Marine's dreams come true.

The Marine, Jarrod Haschert, made a 34-second video telling the UFC star that she was his "celebrity crush" and that he loved everything she did.

"I think you are a phenomenal person," Haschert said. "Which is why it would be my honor to take you to the Marine Corps Ball on December 11."

Rousey had training camp scheduled that day, but now she's free. Haschert said he hoped the date wouldn't get in the way of her training. "You will truly be making my dream come true," he said before flashing a smile.

Jarrod Hasch marineThat video, which was posted on August 22 on Facebook, has now been played over 5 million times, and Rousey has received the message.

Rousey told a TMZ cameraman that she would "totally go" and that Haschert was "cute." Her biggest concern was that she didn't know how to contact him to formally accept his invitation.

"Do I call him?" she asked the cameraman. "Or do I set up a time and place like 'Never Been Kissed'?" the Drew Barrymore movie.

The cameraman assured her that he would take care of making sure Haschert heard the good news.

Rousey has a few demands though: "He has to be a gentleman" and "he has to find dates for my girls [friends] and we'll all go."

Rousey isn't the first celebrity to score an invite to the Marine Corps Ball and actually say yes. In 2011, Sgt. Scott Moore invited Mila Kunis, and she accepted.

Here's Haschert's winning invitation.

Hey guys, I'm trying to take Ronda Rousey to the Marine Corps Ball this year and I need your help to reach out to her and her fans. Please share this post and video. Thank you!!

The most ardent supporter of Kanye West's presidential escapade cites Donald Trump as proof Kanye could win

Kanye West

Hip-hop mogul Kanye West took over the internet on Sunday when he concluded a lengthy VMA acceptance speech with a declaration.

"Yes, as you probably could have guessed in this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for president," said West, who accepted a lifetime-achievement award from pop star Taylor Swift.

Not even 24 hours after West's announcement, one of his fans, Eugene Craig, a 24-year-old Republican activist from Maryland, filed papers with the Federal Election Commission to create a PAC called "Ready for Kanye."

Business Insider spoke to Craig on Tuesday to find out why he was so quick to pull the trigger. He said he saw an opportunity and immediately seized it. He thinks the biggest asset West would bring to an election is getting people who never were involved before to vote.

Craig's goal in all this: Reach a whole new group of people, using West as a vessel.

"This is a great opportunity to gather information. We want to get young voters, minority voters — young minority voters," he said.

"If people are hip-hop fans, if they're Kanye fans, or even listen to music at all, they're way more likely to vote if Kanye is involved," he added.

But Craig thinks West has a chance to win, too — and he cited the surge of another celebrity candidate as proof that it's possible.

"In the age of Donald Trump anything is possible," Craig said. "And if I compared Trump and West you have one person who would shrink the Republican Party, and one person who would expand it — it’s something worth looking at."

Though he theoretically could raise money to support a potential West campaign, Craig said he's lasering in on gathering voter support at the moment.

vmas kanye west

Here's the transcript of our conversation with Craig.

Business Insider: Why did you decide to start this PAC, and why so early?

Eugene Craig: You have to get it when then the iron is hot. I hope Mr. West decides to run for president if there is no republican incumbent. He brings a whole new aspect from people who are cross-cultural. The VMA win and the announcement make his stock very high.

BI: Do you believe West has a chance to win? What makes him a good candidate?

EC: In the age of Donald Trump anything is possible. He’d bring an interesting perspective to the race. Providing there is no Republican president, he could market them to a whole new segment of the voting population. He would absolutely increase voter turnout. If I could compare Trump and West, you have one person who would shrink the Republican Party, and one person who would expand it — it’s something worth looking at. If people are hip-hop fans, if they're Kanye fans, or even listen to music at all, they're way more likely to vote if Kanye is involved. He’s pro-small business. He’s been the conscience of an entire generation for a long time. He’d bring a hugely different perspective. If Katrina and Taylor Swift never happened, the world would have a totally different perspective on Kanye. He’d bring a hugely different perspective.

Donald and KanyeBI: What was your reaction when you initially saw Kanye announce?

EC: I watched it live. I sat on it for a little bit, then said why not jump out in front and get ahead of it. We have a huge opportunity here.

BI: What are your goals for the PAC? Will you reach out to Kanye and be officially affiliated?

EC: Our biggest goal is to gather data and voter information. If we could find a way to reach out to him that would be amazing, but we’ll wait and see what happens. We aren’t planning to raise any money as of right now, but this is a great opportunity to gather information. We want to get young voters minority voters, young minority votes.

BI: Who would be Kanye’s perfect running mate?

EC: Some people think Jay Z would be great. I think he would actually pick a politician.

BI: Do you think Kanye really plans to pursue this? What if he runs as a Democrat?

EC: We’re going to push this pretty hard. The iron is sizzling — we’ll see where it goes, more so now than later. It wouldn’t be a waste of time if he ran as a Democrat. One of our biggest goals is trying to get people out to vote this provides a vehicle for it.

BI: What’s your favorite Kanye song?

EC: "Never Let Me Down." When I first listened to the album ["The College Dropout"], it resonated with me. It speaks to the conscience of Kanye West. People that aren’t Kanye fans don’t understand Kanye West. The guy is no dummy. People don’t get that. His grandma was civil-rights pioneer, and his mom was a professor.

Although the Academy Awards aren’t for another five months, it’s never too soon to start talking about who will take on hosting duties.

It sounds like the 2016 Oscars will have two hosts, according to Entertainment Weekly.

EW got the confirmation from David Hill, one of the two producers who were announced Tuesday as overseeing the show.

“There will be multiple hosts for sure — there will be two,” Hill said.

Who would be the best duo for the job?

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are an obvious choice. But would they want to do it after hosting the Golden Globes for the last three years?
