Quentin Tarantino thinks this young Hollywood starlet could become one of the greatest actresses of all-time

Quentin Tarantino Vivien Killilea

If there's one thing writer/director Quentin Tarantino prides himself on, it's casting the right actor to the right role.

And for his latest movie, "The Hateful Eight," the Oscar-winner considered the highest-paid actress in the world, Jennifer Lawrence, to play the female heroine Daisy in the movie.

“When I was looking for [the character] Daisy, I could have seen Jennifer Lawrence doing a good job with the role,” Tarantino told New York Magazine. “I’m a very big fan of hers. I think she could end up being another little Bette Davis if she keeps on going the way she’s going."

jennifer lawrenceTarantino comparing Lawrence to Davis, one of the greatest actresses of all time (two-time Oscar winner and known for starring in classics like "All About Eve" and "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?"), is quite a compliment. But there was a big reason why the director didn’t go any further on his idea to cast Lawrence.

“Daisy should be a little older,” said Tarantino. “She should fit in with the guys.”

Jennifer LawrenceThe “guys” he’s referring to are the bounty hunters who are all snowed in with Daisy at a saloon during a blizzard in “The Hateful Eight.” They include veteran actors Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern, Walton Goggins, and Demian Bichir.

Tarantino cast Jennifer Jason Leigh (“Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” “The Anniversary Party”).

“Jennifer Jason Leigh came in and was really good,” Tarantino said. “She went for a couple of things that other people just kind of playacted. She had to act like she got shot, and she just screamed bloody murder. I kept remembering Jennifer’s bloodcurdling scream. If it had happened in a house, somebody would have called the cops.”

Jennifer Jason Leigh The Hateful Eight Andrew CooperYou can't really question Tarantino's choice as his casting track record is impeccable; even casting actors that Hollywood has long thrown aside.

His most famous instance was casting John Travolta in "Pulp Fiction," which gave the actor’s career a full 180. Following his impressive performance, Travolta went on to becoming a bankable lead actor through the rest of the 1990s.

The casting of Leigh isn’t comparable to Travolta’s. Leigh has been working consistently in movies and TV her whole career.

But it's obvious Tarantino toils over finding the right actors for his characters, regardless of their status in the business.

“I actually think my characters are going to be one of my biggest legacies after I’m done,” he told New York Magazine. “So I have no obligation whatsoever other than to just cast it right.”

“The Hateful Eight” will open in theaters on Christmas Day and in wide release on January 8.

'Mythbusters' built a real rotating machine gun to test out the epic final scene in 'Breaking Bad' — here's how it fared

mythbusters breaking bad 3 final

In the final episode of “Breaking Bad,” Walt (Bryan Cranston) gets Jesse (Aaron Paul) out of the clutches of the bad guys by creating an automatic swaying machine gun in the trunk of his car that blows them all away while he and Jesse lay protected on the floor.

In case you don’t remember, this is how it looked

breaking bad gunWell, Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage of "Mythbusters" decided to put Walt’s final showdown to the test.

The duo built the M60 machine gun featured in the scene with the same equipment used on the show. They also used the same material for the wall used in the show to shoot at (with some wooden cutouts behind it representing Walt and the bad guys) to see if the bullets from the gun would actually go through the car, the wall, and hit the cutouts.

"Breaking Bad" creator Vince Gilligan was there to keep the setting authentic.

With the M60 loaded with 200 live rounds of ammunition, the experiment began.

Here's why reality show 'Intervention' has a higher success rate than most rehab programs

intervention LAUREN V HIREZ SCREEN GRABS.07 150202

A&E's "Intervention," recently aired its 200th episode, isn't just an extremely successful show format — but it's also earned itself a stellar record for having its subjects remain clean after the cameras stop rolling.

"It's just brutally honest in its portrayal of addiction," showrunner Jeff Weaver of GRB Entertainment said of the show's appeal. "I think our viewers can really sense that and respond to it favorably. And as hard as it is to watch, it's also very hard to turn away from."

Have you ever wondered what happened beyond that moment the subjects step into the rehabilitation program? How successful is the show really?

Business Insider worked with the producers of A&E's "Intervention," which has an Emmy win in its pocket and is currently nominated again, to get the statistics on the show's subjects. What they reported back was impressive.

  • Out of a total 276 interventions, 27o subjects (or 98.7%) agreed to go into treatment.
  • Over the life of the show, only six subjects have turned down further treatment.
  • Of the 270 subjects that went on to treatment, 151 (or 55%) remain clean and sober.

intervention chartWeaver and his team are proud of their record for success.

Success rates for treatment centers are hard to ascertain as there's very little legal requirement for centers to report that data. But NPR reports that there's a substantial amount of information regarding AA programs that place their success rate between just 5% to 10%.

"I think we get to send a lot of them off to treatment with a little bit of a head start on evaluating themselves and their lives and what's led them to this low point," the producer said.

The process of the making a TV show definitely adds another layer of self-examination, with frequent interviews with the subject, his family and friends, and omnipresent cameras.

ae intervention 200th episode

"When our subjects say yes to treatment, they've just undergone an intense documentary process where they're asked hard hitting, deeply personal questions about every aspect of their lives," Weaver said.

The success rate of "Intervention" would make it the golden ticket for addicts looking to really beat their illness. That's a double-sided sword for the "Intervention" team.

At any given time, the show will have between 300 to 900 requests to be on the show. Picking subjects is a team effort between GRB Entertainment and A&E staff and executives.

"It's painful, because we know out of the thousands of submissions we get, only a handful will get selected," Weaver said. "It's very tough for us to be the ones that have to make that decision."

For those who do get one of those spots, Weaver revealed what probably got them chosen.

"We strive to pick subjects that will be as brutally honest with us as we are direct about our questions," he offered.

"Intervention" airs Sundays at 10 p.m. on A&E.

Meet the 24-year-old breakout star of 'Fear the Walking Dead'

frank dillane fear the walking dead 1

Remember the name Frank Dillane. You'll be hearing a lot about him in the coming weeks.

The 24-year-old actor captured the attention of viewers during Sunday's season premiere of AMC's "Walking Dead" companion series, "Fear the Walking Dead." Not just a handsome face, he certainly did a great job during some of the premiere episode's most exciting scenes.

GettyImages 482584256 frank dillane fear the walking deadHere's some things to know about Frank Dillane:

Acting is the family business.
Dillane's father is Stephen Dillane, an actor on "Game of Thrones" who was nominated for an Emmy for his role on miniseries "John Adams." Stephen and Frank worked together on a couple films, including the feature film, "Papadopoulos & Sons."

Dillane's mother, Naomi Wirthner, is the director and co-founder of a theater company called Barebones Project.

He's already sort of familiar with zombies. He apparently played one at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) in a student film. He graduated from RADA in 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts in acting.

The London-born actor worked with a dialogue coach for "Fear the Walking Dead."
"Dialect was my biggest fear, so I spent a long time working with dialect coaches just trying to get American down," he told Entertainment Weekly. "I think it’s very important and very easy to misinterpret. So, I mean I haven’t seen the pilot yet, so I am not sure as to whether I did a good job yet or not, but the accent is certainly my biggest fear."

You may remember him from a little role in 2009's "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince."

Tom Riddle 16 frank dillane harry potterOK, so not a little part at all. He played Tom Riddle  basically Lord Voldermort at 16-years-old.

Tom Riddle 16 frank dillane harry potter 2

His fans still love him in the role.

And although it wasn't a big role, he was memorable on Netflix's "Sense8" earlier this year.

Dillane played Shugs, Riley's (Tuppence Middleton) close friend.

This year, Dillane also stars in the Ron Howard film "In the Heart of the Sea" alongside Chris Hemsworth.

The film was supposed to be out in March, but it has been pushed to December.

His next film is about a punk band on tour. It's called "Viena and the Fantomes" and has a pretty stellar cast: Zoë Kravitz, Dakota Fanning, Evan Rachel Wood, and Jon Bernthal.

For now, catch Frank Dillane on AMC's "Fear the Walking Dead" Sundays at 9 p.m.

CREDIT SUISSE: One Direction's Harry Styles has been a nightmare for SeaWorld's brand

SeaWorld hasn't had a lot of wins lately, but the worst could be over.

After two years of a seemingly nonstop stream of bad press and negative sentiment, analysts at Credit Suisse argue that the company's brand may have hit rock bottom and that a comeback may be in order.

Their analysis includes a dive into all of the mentions of SeaWorld on the internet.

"We believe two events were the main contributors to the 400% spike in mentions and 13% increase in negative commentary month-over-month," said Credit Suisse's note. "Namely, 1) allegations that a SeaWorld employee acted as an undercover member of activist group PETA and 2) One Direction lead singer, Harry Styles, urged all of his fans to boycott SeaWorld during a concert in San Diego."

The ratio of positive to negative online comments was at -68% in July, down 28 percentage points since the prior month. In fact, according to Credit Suisse, the Styles boycott call has led to the most negative comments for the company over the past three years.

seaworld wide

"We recognized that fully resolving our brand challenges in California will require sustained focus and commitment," SeaWorld CEO Joel Manby said in the company's latest quarterly earnings call. "Let me assure you that we remain steadfast in our efforts to overcome these challenges and to improve the performance of the company."

Accompanying all of this negative sentiment has been a turn for the worse in the company's financials. After making a recovery from lows during the Great Recession, when many families chose to forgo vacations and theme parks, SeaWorld has seen a drop in profits and attendance.

The downturn started with a documentary

The bad news surged in 2013, when CNN aired the documentary "Blackfish" detailing supposed abuses and poor conditions at the parks for their marquee attractions, trained orcas.

In 2012, the company posted a profit of $74.2 million for the year. A year later that number that dropped to $51.9 million, and in 2014 it slid further to $49.9 million.

This has continued, with revenue dropping 3% in the second quarter of 2015 from the same time period during the year before.

Attendance also has suffered, falling from 24.39 million in 2012 to 22.40 million in 2014, a drop of just over 8%.

Along with profits, the stock price of the company has plummeted from its high of $38.88 in mid-2013 to $17.74 as of the opening Thursday, nearly a 55% plunge.

According to the analysts at Credit Suisse, this may all be coming back around. It should be noted that the same analysts made this call in June, before the new spike of negative sentiment.

Setting up for a comeback

In March, the company's new management launched a brand-rehabilitation campaign and is expected to roll out a new strategic vision in November.

"Perhaps we need to get a little more current on the latest boy bands; however, while this could negatively impact SEAS' core demographic in San Diego, we don’t believe it's too late for SEAS to rectify its brand impairment issues, particularly as their reputation campaign (launched in March) gains traction," the analysts said.

Visitors are greeted by an Orca killer whale as they attend a show featuring the whales during a visit to the animal theme park SeaWorld in San Diego, California March 19, 2014. REUTERS/Mike BlakeAs part of this plan SeaWorld has launched a new ad campaign and devoted $10 million to research and conservation for orcas. The note also mentions that this aggressive brand rehabilitation is vastly different than the relatively mum response the company had to the "Blackfish" documentary.

In making the case for a brighter future, the Credit Suisse analysts pointed to a few different brands that have suffered from terrible PR and bounced back, including Carnival after the Concordia ship crash and Tylenol after someone in Chicago laced bottles of the medicine with cyanide in 1982.

Additionally, tourism in Orlando, one of SeaWorld's key markets, has continued to increase, and the company's ticket prices are significantly cheaper than Disney and Universal parks in the area.

The combination of factors has the analysts optimistic with a $27 price target for the stock. It's currently trading just below $18.

"While we don't expect brand related issues to dissolve overnight and realize steering sentiment in the opposite direction will be a multi-step operation, it is our opinion that should SEAS illustrate a plan to re-position their brand, investors will be able to gain more comfort on the viability of the business long-term."

still of kirsten dunst in bring it on

It was 15 years ago this week that we first realized we weren't living in a democracy. We are living in a cheerocracy, though sometimes it can feel like a cheertatorship.

That's just one of the many gifts "Bring It On" gave the world when it premiered in theaters on August 25, 2000.

"Bring It On" once again proved to a increasingly cynical young generation that winning wasn't everything and finding a girl who could do gymnastics was. And in the end, we can all be friends -- even with the cheer team from the financially challenged part of town.

The movie would go on to make about $90 million in worldwide box office -- not too shabby for a film made for $10 million. Even better, it would become a cult classic, spawn four TV series, and cemented its stars' careers.

What are the stars up to 15 years later? Let's find out.

Taylor Swift debuted the video for "Wildest Dreams" during the MTV VMA Awards pre-show on Sunday night.

Rising star Scott Eastwood appeared in the video as a loving co-star to Swift during a shoot in the wild. But later he would break her heart.

The video for "Wildest Dreams," the fifth single off Swift's "1989 album, was shot with plenty of wildlife including a huge, beautiful lion -- which seemed to invoke images of Cecil, the South African lion illegally killed by an American earlier this year.

At the end of the video, it read that "all proceeds from the video will be donated to wild conservation efforts through the African Parks Foundation of America."

Swift goes into the VMA show with nine nominations, including Video of the Year for "Bad Blood," and Best Female Video for "Blank Space." During the pre-show, MTV announced that she had won Best Pop Video for "Blank Space."

In late July, Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj got into a Twitter spat that went viral. On Sunday night at the MTV Video Music Awards, the pair used that spat to troll the audience and show fans that they've made up.

Here's the back story on their tiff:

On July 21, rapper Nicki Minaj tweeted  about how "slim" people tend to get VMA nominations. Swift thought the comment was directed at her and fired back at Minaj, saying she was surprised Minaj would "pit women against each other." The two quickly realized it was a miscommunication, and Swift publicly apologized to Minaj shortly after.

To show they're on good terms, the singers joked about their fight on stage at the VMAs. On Sunday, Swift joined Minaj for the end of her performance and the two sang the hook from Swift's hit song, "Bad Blood."'

Swift reportedly wrote "Bad Blood" about her friendship with singer Katy Perry turning sour (Swift got angry at Perry for allegedly stealing some of her backup dancers).

Perry actually commented on the Minaj-Swift Twitter fight back in July too. Perry said she found it ironic that Swift, who has made a lot of money bashing her in "Bad Blood," would protest about pitting women against each other.

After their VMA performance, Swift and Minaj hugged it out.

Kanye West took the MTV VMAs hostage for a full 12 minutes after receiving this year's Video Vanguard Award.

In another nod to a feud with Taylor Swift (the night already had this one and then this one involving Nicki Minaj), the singer presented the award to West. Six years ago, West rushed the stage and interrupted her acceptance speech because he wasn't happy about her win over Beyonce that year.

kanye west taylor swift vmas "Listen to the kids, bro," West said as part of his diatribe.

He also points out how the media stokes feuds between artists. He even called out MTV.

"Do you know how many times they announced that Taylor was going to give me that award 'cuz it got them more ratings?" he said.

He then goes on to question the very idea of award shows.

"I don't understand how they get five people who work their entire life [to] sell records, sell concert tickets, to come stand on a carpet and for the first time in their life be judged on a chopping block and have the opportunity to be considered a loser."

He ended his speech with: "And, yes, as you probably could have guessed in this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for president."

Taylor Swift added another VMA to her mantle by winning Best Female Video for her hit song "Blank Space."

Swift won the award over Nicki Minaj, Sia, Ellie Goulding, and Beyonce. Back in 2009, Kanye West famously interrupted Swift during the VMA's after she beat Beyonce in the video category that year. This year, in an effort to behave, West reacted hilariously by pretending to go to sleep while Swift accepted her award.

After pretending to fall asleep, West then acted like he would rush the stage yet again, but this time he was joking:

Swift and West buried the hatchet earlier this year and were even seen at the Grammy's hugging and taking pictures together.

425_kanye_west_taylor_swift

Swift told Vanity Fair in September that her and West's relationship was mended with the help of hip-hop mogul Jay-Z.

“I feel like I wasn’t ready to be friends with him until I felt like he had some sort of respect for me, and he wasn’t ready to be friends with me until he had some sort of respect for me—so it was the same issue, and we both reached the same place at the same time,” Swift said.

“I became friends with Jay Z, and I think it was important, for Jay Z, for Kanye and I to get along. . . . And then Kanye and I both reached a place where he would say really nice things about my music and what I’ve accomplished, and I could ask him how his kid’s doing.”

West and Swift talked about their differences and how they overcame them later in the evening when Swift announced Kanye's Video Vanguard award. Swift said West's album was the first CD she ever purchased on iTunes.
