Tech Insider was the first media outlet to visit The Void’s headquarters in Utah, and we got to try some of the company’s first creations. These experiences are still far from final, but what we saw was extremely impressive and entertaining. The possibilities are truly endless in The Void.

This crazy old 'Game of Thrones' theory just made a big comeback, and fans are losing it

Pirates have successfully ripped Netflix's ultra-high-definition video for the first time (NFLX)

Breaking Bad Bryan CranstonPirates have finally cracked the 4K copy protection on Netflix, and have leaked the first episode of "Breaking Bad" online, according to TorrentFreak.

The ultra-high-definition "Breaking Bad" episode was almost 18 GB in size.

Though 4K streaming titles have been available for quite some time on sites like Netflix and Amazon, they had previously been safe from pirates. In fact, until this leak, many believed it was currently “impossible” to break High-Bandwidth Digital Copy Protection (HDCP).

Now this new rip suggests that conventional wisdom could be set to change dramatically.

Until now, the only pirated 4K content available online has been a few mainstream releases and “adult” productions, according to TorrentFreak. This leak might signal a flood of more popular titles to the internet torrent sphere.

The media info for the Breaking Bad episode lists the bit rate at 41.3 Mbps, and one should bear in mind that it could be difficult to watch this episode on the average computer today. But 4K video seems to be moving to the forefront of the tech industry’s mind, with rumors that the iPhone 6S will support it. And it looks like the future will include more pirated 4K video.

Netflix told TorrentFreak that they were investigating the leak and would try to prevent similar breaches in the future. “Piracy is a global problem,” a Netflix spokesperson said. “We, like others content providers, are actively working on ways to protect content featured on our site.”

We have reached out to Netflix for comment.

A character who died last season on 'Game of Thrones' is still alive in George R.R. Martin's next book

stannis is alive hbo game of thrones

George R.R. Martin has "Game of Thrones" fans buzzing about a character that may not actually be dead. And, sorry, it's not Jon Snow.

During an online Q&A on Martin's Live Journal, a fan asked if Stannis Baratheon (played by Stephen Dillane, whose son, Frank Dillane, currently stars on AMC's "Fear the Walking Dead") is alive.

Stannis, as fans will recall, is the younger brother of Robert Barathenon (Mark Addy) the late king. He decides that he should be the heir to the Iron Throne when he discovers that Joffrey is the result of an incestuous relationship between his mother and her brother and launches the War of the Five Kings.

Brienne kills Stannis Official HBO 2On the season finale, Stannis found himself on the wrong side of Brienne of Tarth's (Gwendoline Christie) sword. Of course, we only saw her swing her sword down on him... no dead body.

OK, so, Martin was asked if Stannis is still alive. His answer: "In my books? Alive, beyond a doubt."

So, it remains to be seen if the show's producers will follow Martin in the decision to bring Stannis back or continue on their own way. It would probably have ramifications for the war over the Iron Throne.

And as E!Online pointed out, it shines a new light on Snow's (Kit Harrington) death, because his decision to take the Night Watch to Winterfell was made after he found out about Stannis' death. It was that decision that incited his men to rebel and kill him.

Perhaps, we'll find out if Stannis' fate follows the books when the show returns in Spring 2016.

There's a right and wrong way to eat this 'superfood' that Taylor Swift swears by

Some, including singer Taylor Swift, have said the wildly popular chia seed can help with weight loss.

Chia seeds are tiny, gray-black seeds that come from the beautiful chia flower, which is native to central and southern Mexico and Guatemala.

In these regions of the world, chia seeds are popular in nutrition drinks because they are loaded with fiber, protein, and some key B vitamins.

Just two tablespoons (or about one ounce) are packed with nutrients including rough percentages of the average adult's daily allowance of the following:

  • 40% fiber, which helpswith digestion and can help lower your risk of diabetes
  • 9% protein, which is essentialfor the growth and development of muscle
  • 17% calcium, which is importantin the formation of bones and teeth and helps with blood clotting
  • 12% iron, which is importantfor the transport of oxygen throughout the body

As of yet, there are no robust scientific studies to back up the idea that chia seeds can help with weight loss.

And be warned: There is a right and wrong way to eat them, especially if you have a disorder called dysphagia which is characterized by difficulty swallowing.

Thirsty sponges

That's because of the way chia seeds behave in water: Once wet, they'll expand to many times their size when dry, and if they're in your stomach when they expand, it may make you feel fuller than you otherwise would.

Chia seeds are like a thirsty sponge when they come into contact with water. They can absorb anywhere from 12 to 27 times their weight in water. When that happens, the seeds can form a gel-like coating.

Check out the time-lapse GIF below to see how they expand over about 10 minutes after being immersed in a glass of water:

chia seedsThis behavior is also why, at least according to Rebecca Rawl, who specializes in stomach and intestine disorders at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C. and who recently treated a man who'd become unable to swallow after ingesting the seeds, they can be dangerous if eaten incorrectly.

When preparing chia seeds, it's common to add them to water, yogurt, salad dressing, or another liquid-based substance.

Some packages of the seeds also suggest they can be eaten raw. However, at least one recent report suggests that that could be dangerous, especially when washed down with a big glass of water.

chia seedsAlthough rare, consuming chia seeds this way can worsen swallowing problems in people who suffer from dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing.

Last year, a 39-year-old man reportedly had to seek medical treatment after swallowing a tablespoon of the dry seeds and washing them down with a glass of water.

Women's Health Magazine noted that the man had a history of dysphagia, and after ingesting the chia seeds his symptoms worsened significantly.

That's because, due to his pre-existing condition, the seeds became stuck in his esophagus, or foodpipe, on the way to his stomach, and began expanding.

By the time he reached a treatment center, the seeds had blocked his throat, preventing him from swallowing.

"It was a gel of these seeds, the consistency was similar to Playdoh — not solid, but not a liquid," Rawl explained to  for Common Health.

While this man's experience is the only recorded case where someone has suffered from eating chia seeds, there are an estimated 300,000 to 600,000 cases of people in the US alone who suffer from dysphagia each year. And 15% of the elderly reportedly suffer from it.

Though Rawl says it is not a good idea for anyone with this condition to consume chia seeds raw, there is a safe way to eat them:

"Patients with a history of [swallowing problems] ... should be cautioned that chia seeds should only be consumed when they have had the ability to fully expand in liquid prior to ingestion," Rawl told WebMD

Now, check out this other, mesmerizing time-lapse video on YouTube of chia seeds expanding:

Amazon is paying former 'Top Gear' host Jeremy Clarkson a ridiculous amount of money (amzn)

Jeremy Clarkson Top Gear

Last month, Jeremy Clarkson and the rest of the former "Top Gear" gang signed a monster deal with Amazon to create a new car show.

According to the Financial Times, sources say the deal signed by the former hosts of the popular BBC car show calls for Amazon to sink a reported $250 million into 36 episodes over three years.

Now we know how much lead host Clarkson will be paid for his troubles.

In a report by the Telegraph's Lucy Clarke-Billings, sources say the bombastic TV personality will earn roughly $46 million over the life of the contract.

As a result of the Amazon deal, Clarkson is now one of the highest-paid TV hosts in Britain.

According to the Telegraph, Clarkson's Amazon show will receive a budget of around $7 million an episode.

That's a considerable bump over "Top Gear's" $1.5 million-per-show budget, which was one of the largest on the BBC.

The 22nd season of "Top Gear" ended abruptly in March after only seven of the nine planned episodes had aired because of the suspension and subsequent dismissal of Clarkson.

Co-hosts Richard Hammond and James May followed Clarkson out the door by voluntarily declining to renew their BBC contracts, which expired in April. Andy Wilman — "Top Gear's" longtime executive producer and close friend of Clarkson — also left the BBC after the host's dismissal.

The network's decision to part ways with the polarizing TV personality came after an internal BBC inquiry found Clarkson had punched a "Top Gear" producer when he failed to obtain a hot steak dinner after a long day of filming.

The fracas with the producer came after a controversy-filled 2014 for Clarkson, who was mired in scandal stemming from accusations of racist, sexist, and culturally insensitive comments.

Top Gear Jeremy Clarkson

Prior to his dismissal, Clarkson had spent nearly three decades with the BBC as a host on "Top Gear" and is credited with being the driving force behind the show's explosive international success.

In June, the BBC introduced radio DJ Chris Evans as the new frontman for "Top Gear." As a result, the 23rd season of "Top Gear" will most likely feature a lineup of new hosts and be the first to not feature Jeremy Clarkson since 2000. Clarkson made his first appearance on "Top Gear" in 1988 and presided over the show's transformation from an automotive news magazine to its current entertainment-centric format.

With more than 350 million weekly viewers, "Top Gear" set the Guinness World Record as the most watched factual TV program in the world. In addition to the UK show, the "Top Gear" brand includes numerous international spinoffs, a live stadium tour, merchandising, a successful magazine, and a website.

J.K. Rowling reveals a sad detail about a 'Harry Potter' character on Twitter

$

Hagrid

J.K. Rowling is known for answering questions on Twitter about the magical world of Harry Potter.

Often the tidbits are fun additives to the already lush world she created in her iconic book series. But this time, fans were sad to hear the answer to a question about Hagrid, the lovable gameskeeper turned professor.

Twitter user Tanisha Fagwani asked the author: "What was Hagrid's patronus?"

A patronus is a powerful charm that protects its creator, taking the form of whatever creature most embodies the character of the witch or wizard it belongs to.

Think of it as a "spirit animal" of sorts. Harry's patronus was a stag — the animal his late father used to turn into at will as an Animagus. In order to create a patronus, one must conjure up the happiest memories they have, and use  positive energy with all their might.

Harry Potter fans were curious to hear what Hagrid's patronus' form would have been, since he never produced one in the books or the movies.

But there was a reason for that. J.K. Rowling responded to Fagwani, simply stating: "Hagrid couldn't produce a Patronus. It's a very difficult spell."

Hagrid was wrongfully expelled in his third year at Hogwarts. Expulsion results in the breaking of your wand, and the effective end of all your magical training.

Hagrid kept the broken pieces of his wand, and sometimes illegally performed small acts of magic, but clearly his lack of education is the key factor in this sad reveal. Producing a patronus would have simply been too difficult for Hagrid.

Fans responded with expressions of heartache and sadness for the lovable character.

Though lack of skill is the likely explanation, many others online say Hagrid was simply too full of somber memories to conjure the charm. Remember, you need happy thoughts in full-force in order to make the spell work.

Hagrid was orphaned at a young age, and suffered alienation from his peers due to his unusual size. Not to mention how disappointed he was to be expelled. Poor, poor, Hagrid

This year's Burning Man festival has a frightening theme

Burning Man

Burning Man doesn't even start until August 30th, but it's already off to a rocky start.

First, there was the infestation of giant green bugs that, according to Burning Man's official blog, "bite, crawl all over you, and get up and in you."

The bugs have apparently since "dried up and blown away," but in a new blog post from Saturday, festival organizers sarcastically warned that "Bugpocalypse was just a warm up to our possibly most menacing problem. The clowns are waiting with painted smiles to welcome you to Black Rock City."

clown gif

Burning Man's official art theme this year is "Carnival of Mirrors," hence the imminent scary clown costumes.

scary clownsAccording to the blog post from the weekend, "This is not going to be a good year for clown fearing folks... prepare for Sad Clown Town."

They wander around town even now, shapes in the darkness, ducking behind containers, appearing then disappearing at meetings. They’ve applied their make-up that is becoming caked with alkaline playa dust and is slowly fading each day. Prepare for Sad Clown Town. And beware Plug and Players, the clowns have your number. Locate, Tag, Track and Acculturate. Participate or clowns will eat you. My advice is to befriend a clown as soon as possible upon arrival. They are a hive mind and they can sense your intentions and fear.

...And don’t worry about the bugs. Clowns are far scarier.

clown circus This year's festival will be set up a bit like an old-fashioned carnival, complete with a funhouse at the center that "will contemplate the puzzle of self-consciousness."

At the heart of this disorienting maze, a final passage will reveal a courtyard that surrounds the Burning Man. Photo booths will here record the faces of participants, merging them into a swirling stream that will envelop the entire body of the Man. The brittle mirror and the occulting mask will melt away, and at this point there’ll be no gag, no swag, no souvenir of self; the show will be you.

The "Carnival of Mirrors" theme was first announced on the Burning Man website with this creepy video:

A theory about Phoebe from 'Friends' is ruining the show for the internet

lisa kudrow pheobe friends shocked surprised

For anyone who was a "Friends" devotee, it seemed apparent there was something lovably wrong with Lisa Kudrow's character, Phoebe Buffay.

The beautiful blonde never quite seemed all there in the hit NBC sitcom. She referenced having a strange past multiple times on the show, too.

Phoebe told other cast members at various points during the 10 seasons that her mother was a drug dealer, that she hung out with a group of friends behind a dumpster, and that she had been homeless.

One "Friends" fan took Phoebe's checkered past and turned it into a dark theory about how the series should have ended, and it has gone viral.

The fan, @strnks on Twitter, posted the theory a few days ago and it has gotten attention on publications like Time and Daily Mail. In @strnks' eyes, the show shouldn't have ended with Ross, Rachel, Monica, and the gang walking out of their apartment, leaving the keys on the counter.

It should have ended just with Phoebe sitting in the friends' favorite haunt, Central Perk, staring out the window. In this alternate ending, Phoebe would have been a meth head, creepily staring out the window at five people who are actually friends — Ross, Rachel, Joey, Chandler, and Monica — and daydreaming up the whole 10 seasons, mentally inserting herself into what she assumes their lives are like.

"All 10 seasons were merely her fevered imagination," @strnks writes, "projecting herself into the lives of the others. All she ever wanted was... Friends."

Here it is:

Tidal just trolled Apple during a live Drake performance

Drake

Tidal, the music-streaming platform co-owned by Jay Z and a cohort of top-tier music stars, appears to have upset the wrong beast.

Apple reportedly warned the platform that it could face a multimillion dollar lawsuit because rapper Drake, an Apple Music artist, was set to appear at a charity event in New Orleans that was live-streamed on Tidal Friday night.

According to a Page Six report, once Apple learned of Drake's scheduled appearance — in which he was to perform two songs — letters from Apple were "sent to Tidal warning that Drake cannot appear on the Tidal stream of the festival, either solo or part of a group, and if the warning was ignored, the liabilities could be up to $20 million."

The publication says Tidal bristled at the threat, but agreed not to show Drake's performance on the live stream. Business Insider viewed the live stream Friday night, and around 11 pm eastern time, Lil Wayne announced a guest artist — not by name, but with a brief musical introduction — and that's when the stream abruptly stopped and this message appeared:

Apple Tidal Feud

Less than 30 minutes later, the stream returned with fireworks and a big band performance on stage.

Lil WeezyAna TidalThe "Lil Weezyana" event was meant to benefit kids affected by Hurricane Katrina — the 10th anniversary of which has been commemorated nationwide during the past week.

Drake apparently ditched Tidal days before it launched in March, joining Apple Music instead. Details of the artist's deal with the tech giant are not clear, but Apple had been courting him ahead of launch.

Tidal has encountered a lot of bad press almost as soon as it launched, and has been struggling to gain footing in a crowded section of the streaming space. Madonna acknowledged the difficulty in an inteview with the Associated Press last month, saying "It's just the beginning, so we're working out a lot of kinks ... we're going to build something unique and amazing that's going to attract a lot of people."

Rumors of Tidal's demise have been swirling anyway, though the platform appears to remain fully operational.

Business Insider has reached out to Apple and Tidal for comment. We'll update this post when we hear back.

8. "Xena: Warrior Princess" (NBC)

"Xena: Warrior Princess" can go on even without Lucy Lawless. The original Xena has been denying a reboot is in the works. But NBC president Robert Greenblatt said it's on and Lucy can work behind-the-scenes if she'd like. Strange that her husband, Rob Tapert, is an executive producer.

Jon Snow is 'absolutely dead,' second HBO exec says of 'Game of Thrones' casualty

Jon Snow Season 5

Just in case you didn't hear it the first time when HBO's programming president said it, a second executive from the pay channel has come out to settle a hot topic for "Game of Thrones" fans.

“[Jon Snow] is absolutely dead,” HBO's executive vice president of programming, Michael Ellenberg, told a packed convention center in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Thursday.

Various versions of the statement were recorded by those present at the talk via Twitter:

Did you notice that Ellenberg's statement was met with some disbelief?

Photos of Kit Harrington, who played Jon Snow, in the vicinity of the "GOT" set (and possibly other hints) have kept hope of his return alive. Most fans have moved on to accepting the death and on to theories of how he'll return as something undead or brought back to life.

There's even a wacky new theory that's heating up the fandom that extends Jon Snow's existence by giving him a twin— a very "Star Wars"-like wish fulfillment.

And despite that both the "GOT" showrunner and Harrington had said Jon Snow was dead after the season five finale aired, we'll have to wait if there's some other plan for the character when the show returns in spring 2016.

The Beatles were constantly photographed by professionals and obsessive fans alike, but they liked to take their own snapshots, too.

Drummer Ringo Starr especially loved taking photos.

During the group's glory days, Starr was active behind the lens, capturing candid moments on tour, backstage, and in the studio.

His work has been catalogued in a new book, "Photograph," which contains over 250 extremely rare and never-before-seen photographs taken by the world-famous drummer.

Published by Genesis Publications, the book will go on sale September 21.“There’s a lot of pictures in this book, shots of ‘the boys’ that only I could have taken," says Starr in the introduction.

Take a peek at the highlights below, as well as some of Starr's musings from the book.

This image was taken before Starr joined The Beatles, when he was still playing drums for a band called Rory Storm and the Hurricanes.

Soon after that photo was taken, Starr joined The Beatles. As the band's popularity grew, their days became busy with making music, going to photo shoots, and touring. Here, the band is pictured on a train car between New York City and Washington, DC.

Starr says he feels bad for famous young musicians of this generation who can't escape the media and society completely. "We'd go on holiday and it was great; we could go away, have a good time, and be left alone," he says.

Friends."

Here it is:

Drake's manager: 'Apple doesn't have the power to stop us' from going on Tidal's live stream

Drake's manager is disputing claims made by Tidal, the music-streaming platform co-owned by Jay Z and other music stars, that Apple refused to let Drake appear on Tidal's live stream of a charity event in New Orleans.

"The decision to not have Drake participate in the Tidal stream has nothing to do with Apple or Drake’s deal ... Point blank, 100 percent. I made a business decision," Drake’s manager Future The Prince told BuzzFeed News.

"Apple doesn't have the power to stop us from being part of a live stream. The only people that have the power to do that are Cash Money and Universal, and they’re our partners."

That statement runs contrary to what Tidal said about the situation during the show's stream, and on Twitter.

Tidal cut a 30-minute of segment of its live stream and replaced it with this black box that blamed Apple.

Apple Tidal Feud

Shortly before the concert, a report from a Page Six said that Apple also threatened to sue Tidal for up to $20 million if Drake appeared on Tidal's live stream.

Anonymous sources also refuted that to Buzzfeed, saying that Apple did not rattle a $20 million lawsuit at Tidal, or threaten Tidal with any legal action whatsoever.

Both of these accounts cannot be true.

On the one hand, Apple didn't get Music off to the best start with the artist community. It's short-lived decision not to pay artists royalties for the first three months after Music launched, when Apple was doing a free trial period, earned Taylor Swift's public ire. Her open letter publicly shamed Apple into quickly changing its mind.

Then again, there's bad blood between Drake and Tidal, too.

Tidal is a music streaming service championed by Jay Z that launched in March. Jay Z touted Tidal as the artists' platform, reportedly offering millions of dollars and equity stakes in the company to some choice talent. But Tidal has been off to a rough start for a variety of reasons ranging from pricing, to steep competition, to how much bandwidth it requires.

Drake was reportedly supposed to be one of the original 16 artist "partners" of Tidal but pulled out at the last minute and joined Apple's new Music streaming service instead. Rumors circulated that Apple paid Drake $19 million for an exclusive contract.
