A theory about Phoebe from 'Friends' is ruining the show for the internet

lisa kudrow pheobe friends shocked surprised

For anyone who was a "Friends" devotee, it seemed apparent there was something lovably wrong with Lisa Kudrow's character, Phoebe Buffay.

The beautiful blonde never quite seemed all there in the hit NBC sitcom. She referenced having a strange past multiple times on the show, too.

Phoebe told other cast members at various points during the 10 seasons that her mother was a drug dealer, that she hung out with a group of friends behind a dumpster, and that she had been homeless.

One "Friends" fan took Phoebe's checkered past and turned it into a dark theory about how the series should have ended, and it has gone viral.

The fan, @strnks on Twitter, posted the theory a few days ago and it has gotten attention on publications like Time and Daily Mail. In @strnks' eyes, the show shouldn't have ended with Ross, Rachel, Monica, and the gang walking out of their apartment, leaving the keys on the counter.

It should have ended just with Phoebe sitting in the friends' favorite haunt, Central Perk, staring out the window. In this alternate ending, Phoebe would have been a meth head, creepily staring out the window at five people who are actually friends — Ross, Rachel, Joey, Chandler, and Monica — and daydreaming up the whole 10 seasons, mentally inserting herself into what she assumes their lives are like.

"All 10 seasons were merely her fevered imagination," @strnks writes, "projecting herself into the lives of the others. All she ever wanted was... Friends."

Here it is:

hayes grier

Hayes Grier, a 15-year-old Vine star and YouTuber, will make his network TV debut on the next season of ABC's "Dancing with the Stars." Grier announced the news on Twitter earlier this week.

"Right now it's 4 in the morning in LA and I was going to announce my big announcement in seven days, but I just got word that I could announce it now, so why not?" Grier said in a video he posted to Twitter.

"It's going to be really cool and an amazing journey to be on season 21 of Dancing with the Stars, and I'm super excited, and I want you guys to be a big part of it and support and vote for us, and it's going to be a great time."

Grier shares a lot of goofy videos with his 4 million Vine followers, featuring himself and other Vine stars. His brother Nash is one of the most popular Vine users in the world.

The only other person younger than 15-year-old Hayes to join Dancing with the Stars is Hunger Games star Willow Shields, who was 14 when she was on the show's 20th season.

Here's just one of Hayes' Vines:

Twitter-owned video platform Vine launched in January 2013. Since then, it's proven to be a lucrative way to get paid for viral videos. Brands who want to promote their products throw money at users like Grier.

One 20-something Vine star told Business Insider last year that he's "literally making a living off" of Vine. Though he declined to say how much he gets paid, he said it was "in the ballpark" of $20,000 per video. "Campaigns can pay more than that," he says. "They can also pay less."

Vine heartthrob Logan Paul told Tech Insider's Caroline Moss that his first branded Vine paid $2,000, but now, he can charge in the high five figures per sponsored Vine. Though Paul and his friends don't discuss financials, he thinks his friend, Vine star King Bach, makes about $120,000 for each sponsored Vine he posts. "When I heard that, I was like, 'damn,'" Logan told Moss.

YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley will reportedly have to shell out $400,000 to Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West for wrongfully taping and exhibiting their big stadium engagement proposal.

According to TMZ, that's how the involved parties are settling a lawsuit in which the famous couple accused Hurley of shooting footage (despite signing a confidentiality agreement) of their 2013 proposal at San Francisco's AT&T Park in 2013 and leaking it on his new internet venture, MixBit.

chad hurleyThe site reports that Hurley wasn't invited to the event, but that he was allowed to stay if he signed a confidentiality agreement. Instead, he posted the video on MixBit, tweeted it out to his nearly a million followers, and put out a press release.

In court documents, the couple accuse Hurley of being desperate for another big company after he and his partners sold YouTube to Google for $1.65 billion.

The couple says that the footage belonged to "Keeping Up With the Kardashian" producers Bunim/Murray and E!.

It later aired on the E! reality show in February 2014.

Representatives for West and Kardashian West didn't immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment on the reported settlement.

Hurley's rep pointed BI to the following tweet from Hurley:

Some of America's best TV shows have a problem with women

$

its always sunny in philadelphia cast

The Director's Guild of America released its TV diversity statistics this week, and they're not looking too good.

Of more than 3,900 episodes produced in the 2014-2015 television season, only 16% of directors were women, and only 18% were of minority ethnicities.

The numbers become even more troubling when you look at the diversity statistics for first-time directors, which predict diversity over time. The percentage of female first-time directors dropped to 16% from 20%, and the percentage of minority first-time directors rose by just 1 percentage point, also to 16%.

First-time directors diversityA full 10% of all series examined had no women or minority directors whatsoever. The highest profile are "Boardwalk Empire," "Masters of Sex," and "Ray Donovan." "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" hasn't hired any female or minority directors during its 115-episode run that began a decade ago.

In its 197 episodes since 2005, "Supernatural" hired two women and three minority men to direct. The DGA did commend several shows for their commitment to hiring minority directors — the most prominent of which include "Veep," "Empire," "Homeland," and "Modern Family."

Six series from subscription-video services, like Netflix and Amazon, earned spots on the DGA's "worst of" list, for television shows that hire people who aren't non-Caucasian males as directors for fewer than 15% of their episodes. This indicates "that new platforms may be carrying through the same hiring practices as traditional television and cable networks," according to the report, even though shows like Amazon's "Transparent" and Netflix's "Sense8" are receiving criticalacclaim for their diversity.

Only 3% of all episodes were directed by minority women. Caucasian males retained the same slice of the pie as last year, directing 69% of all episodes.

DGA diversity pie chartOn a lighter note, an interesting tidbit from the DGA report is buried in a footnote. The percentage drop for minority males — to 15% from 17% — can be credited to Tyler Perry.

"It should be noted that there was a 3% increase in the hiring of minority males in the 2013-14 season that was entirely attributed to the high number of episodes directed by a single director: Tyler Perry," the report says. "Perry directed 54 fewer episodes in the 2014-15 season, contributing to a 2% reduction in the number of episodes directed by male minorities."

CREDIT SUISSE: One Direction's Harry Styles has been a nightmare for SeaWorld's brand

SeaWorld hasn't had a lot of wins lately, but the worst could be over.

After two years of a seemingly nonstop stream of bad press and negative sentiment, analysts at Credit Suisse argue that the company's brand may have hit rock bottom and that a comeback may be in order.

Their analysis includes a dive into all of the mentions of SeaWorld on the internet.

"We believe two events were the main contributors to the 400% spike in mentions and 13% increase in negative commentary month-over-month," said Credit Suisse's note. "Namely, 1) allegations that a SeaWorld employee acted as an undercover member of activist group PETA and 2) One Direction lead singer, Harry Styles, urged all of his fans to boycott SeaWorld during a concert in San Diego."

The ratio of positive to negative online comments was at -68% in July, down 28 percentage points since the prior month. In fact, according to Credit Suisse, the Styles boycott call has led to the most negative comments for the company over the past three years.

seaworld wide

"We recognized that fully resolving our brand challenges in California will require sustained focus and commitment," SeaWorld CEO Joel Manby said in the company's latest quarterly earnings call. "Let me assure you that we remain steadfast in our efforts to overcome these challenges and to improve the performance of the company."

Accompanying all of this negative sentiment has been a turn for the worse in the company's financials. After making a recovery from lows during the Great Recession, when many families chose to forgo vacations and theme parks, SeaWorld has seen a drop in profits and attendance.

The downturn started with a documentary

The bad news surged in 2013, when CNN aired the documentary "Blackfish" detailing supposed abuses and poor conditions at the parks for their marquee attractions, trained orcas.

In 2012, the company posted a profit of $74.2 million for the year. A year later that number that dropped to $51.9 million, and in 2014 it slid further to $49.9 million.

This has continued, with revenue dropping 3% in the second quarter of 2015 from the same time period during the year before.

Attendance also has suffered, falling from 24.39 million in 2012 to 22.40 million in 2014, a drop of just over 8%.

Along with profits, the stock price of the company has plummeted from its high of $38.88 in mid-2013 to $17.74 as of the opening Thursday, nearly a 55% plunge.

According to the analysts at Credit Suisse, this may all be coming back around. It should be noted that the same analysts made this call in June, before the new spike of negative sentiment.

Setting up for a comeback

In March, the company's new management launched a brand-rehabilitation campaign and is expected to roll out a new strategic vision in November.

"Perhaps we need to get a little more current on the latest boy bands; however, while this could negatively impact SEAS' core demographic in San Diego, we don’t believe it's too late for SEAS to rectify its brand impairment issues, particularly as their reputation campaign (launched in March) gains traction," the analysts said.

Visitors are greeted by an Orca killer whale as they attend a show featuring the whales during a visit to the animal theme park SeaWorld in San Diego, California March 19, 2014. REUTERS/Mike BlakeAs part of this plan SeaWorld has launched a new ad campaign and devoted $10 million to research and conservation for orcas. The note also mentions that this aggressive brand rehabilitation is vastly different than the relatively mum response the company had to the "Blackfish" documentary.

In making the case for a brighter future, the Credit Suisse analysts pointed to a few different brands that have suffered from terrible PR and bounced back, including Carnival after the Concordia ship crash and Tylenol after someone in Chicago laced bottles of the medicine with cyanide in 1982.

Additionally, tourism in Orlando, one of SeaWorld's key markets, has continued to increase, and the company's ticket prices are significantly cheaper than Disney and Universal parks in the area.

The combination of factors has the analysts optimistic with a $27 price target for the stock. It's currently trading just below $18.

"While we don't expect brand related issues to dissolve overnight and realize steering sentiment in the opposite direction will be a multi-step operation, it is our opinion that should SEAS illustrate a plan to re-position their brand, investors will be able to gain more comfort on the viability of the business long-term."

Donald Trump just let someone feel his hair in the middle of a campaign speech

Screen Shot 2015 08 27 at 1.27.02 PM

Real-estate mogul Donald Trump started a Thursday campaign speech by letting one of his supporters touch his famous hair to prove it's real.

Speaking in Greenville, South Carolina, Trump pulled out a copy of the day's New York Times, which featured a story on the Spanish-language media's hostility to his presidential campaign.

Trump noted that the very first sentence of the story reported that one radio show host calls Trump "El hombre del peluquín" — or the man of the toupee.

Trump began by mocking The Times.

"You mind  if I put on my glasses?" Trump asked his supporters. "The print gets smaller and smaller and smaller as they lose more and more money. It's tough. It's true. Do you remember how big those pages used to be?"

The Republican businessman then blasted the notion that he wears a toupee.

"I don't wear a toupee. It's my hair! I swear!" he exclaimed.

He invited a woman up onto the stage to prove his hair is real.

"Come here. Come here. We're going to settle this," he said. "You have to do an inspection here. This is getting crazy. This is crazy. Just real quick; we don't want to mess it up too much because I do use hairspray."

The woman gently touched his head and declared the hair authentic.

"Thank you. Nice to meet you. Somebody's got a very nice wife," Trump responded. "I don't know who she is."

Jon Snow is 'absolutely dead,' second HBO exec says of 'Game of Thrones' casualty

Jon Snow Season 5

Just in case you didn't hear it the first time when HBO's programming president said it, a second executive from the pay channel has come out to settle a hot topic for "Game of Thrones" fans.

“[Jon Snow] is absolutely dead,” HBO's executive vice president of programming, Michael Ellenberg, told a packed convention center in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Thursday.

Various versions of the statement were recorded by those present at the talk via Twitter:

Did you notice that Ellenberg's statement was met with some disbelief?

Photos of Kit Harrington, who played Jon Snow, in the vicinity of the "GOT" set (and possibly other hints) have kept hope of his return alive. Most fans have moved on to accepting the death and on to theories of how he'll return as something undead or brought back to life.

There's even a wacky new theory that's heating up the fandom that extends Jon Snow's existence by giving him a twin— a very "Star Wars"-like wish fulfillment.

And despite that both the "GOT" showrunner and Harrington had said Jon Snow was dead after the season five finale aired, we'll have to wait if there's some other plan for the character when the show returns in spring 2016.

While most people associate the Playboy Mansion with scantily clad playmates and sex-fueled debauchery, it served as the childhood home for Hugh Hefner's sons.

Now 23, Hefner's youngest son, Cooper, recounts his childhood spent in what many consider to be a sort of adult fantasyland. For Cooper, it was quite the opposite: a child's wonderland fueled by Indiana Jones-inspired adventures in the Grotto, a zoo full of exotic animals, and epic games of hide-and-seek played in the mansion's private forest of redwood trees.

Cooper shared his experiences growing up inside the mansion, and invited Business Insider along on a private tour of the grounds.

John Oliver's influence on American culture becomes clear after he finds his way into an appeals court opinion

John Oliver

A few weeks ago, John Oliver took his "Last Week Tonight" desk to criticize the lack of rights given to US citizens in the country's territories.

A judge on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals seems to be a fan, as Above the Law points out.

Judge Marsha Berzon just ruled on a case where Guam residents sued the government of Guam over a tax refund program.

Berzon didn't actually agree with Oliver, but she acknowledged his criticism in a footnote.

We do note, however, that the so-called “Insular Cases,” which established a less-than-complete application of the Constitution in some U.S. territories, has been the subject of extensive judicial, academic, and popular criticism. See, e.g., Juan Torruella, The Insular Cases: The Establishment of a Regime of Political Apartheid, 77 Rev. Jur. U.P.R. 1 (2008); Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: U.S. Territories, Youtube (Mar. 8, 2015), https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CesHr99ezWE

Because of a Supreme Court ruling over a century ago, Downes v. Bidwell, US citizens in territories like Guam and Puerto Rico aren't guaranteed constitutional rights, and can't vote for president or elect a congressional representative.

"More than 4 million people live in the US territories; more than 98% of them are racial or ethnic minorities," Oliver said. "The more you look into the history of why their voting rights are restricted, the harder it is to justify."

Since he took over the "Daily Show" hosting gig for a summer two years ago and started hosting "Last Week Tonight" on HBO a year later, Oliver has been seen as Jon Stewart's heir apparent.

He's made waves for using his time for exhaustive, in-depth looks into underreported subjects — like US territory rights, civil forfeiture, and online harassment— and making them palatable for larger audiences.

America's biggest civil rights group has a huge problem with Hollywood right now

Hollywood Sign Hero

Abysmal new diversity statistics for the TV industry highlight a big problem that the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has with the TV and movie industry.

The American Civil Liberties Union requested in May that federal and state governments investigate the Director's Guild of America — a union representing film and television directors — for “the systemic failure to hire women directors at all levels of the film and television industry."

A new survey from the Director's Guild, which looked at over 3,900 episodes produced in the 2014-2015 television season, found that Caucasian males direct 69% of television episodes, and that 10% of television series have no women or minority directors at all. Furthermore, only 16% of directors were women, and only 18% were of minority ethnicities.

Martha Coolidge, a former president of the DGA, supports the ACLU's call for an investigation of the underemployment of female directors, but told Deadline that the DGA isn't at fault.

“Despite the fact that its members are primarily men, they have put a remarkable amount of effort into representing and promoting women and minority directors," Coolidge told Deadline. "The DGA literally has nothing to do with hiring in this industry."

In their letters to state and federal employment agencies, the ACLU noted that half of students focusing on directing in major film schools are women, yet their employment numbers continue to trail significantly behind men. Based on interviews with 50 female directors, it alleged discriminatory hiring practices are rampant in the movie industry.

Women directors are subjected to discriminatory practices, including recruiting practices that exclude them, failure to hire qualified women directors based on overt sex stereotyping and implicit bias, and the use of screening mechanisms that have the effect of shutting women out ... It is widely known that some employers do not hire women directors. Women have publicly reported being told “we don’t hire women,” or “we tried [hiring a woman] once.”30 More than one award-winning film director reported to us she was told in a meeting that a particular showrunner “doesn’t hire women.” Another director said that producers and studio executives repeatedly told her agent “not to send women” for consideration for particular jobs. A third director was told by a network executive to avoid a show that was not “woman friendly.”

The DGA, for its part, counts only 12% of its members as women, and said it's been advocating for fair hiring practices for years.

"The lack of network and studio action to hire more women and minority directors is deplorable," the DGA said in a statement. "The DGA has been a long-standing advocate pressuring the industry to do the right thing, which is to change their hiring practices and hire more women and minority directors."

Sorry, Swifties: It looks like pop idol Taylor Swift won't be celebrating her renewed relationship with Apple by showing up to its September 9th event in San Francisco, because she has a show in Houston, Texas the same day

But this is looking like Apple's biggest product launch event ever, taking place at San Francisco's 7,000-seat Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. And it would seem like a waste not to have some major musical talent on hand.

Siri's not giving any hints, but maybe we can find one.

Here are the Apple-affiliated musicial acts that have a gap in their touring schedule on September 9th:

  • Drake, who introduced Apple Music on stage earlier this year.
  • The Weeknd, who debuted his new single "I Can't Feel My Face" at that same Apple Music event.
  • Coldplay, who was on hand at a 2010 event to help Steve Jobs launch the iPod Shuffle.
  • Run the Jewels and St. Vincent, both of whom have shows on Apple Music's Beats1 Radio.
  • Norah Jones played at a 2009 Apple event.

Sorry, Bono fans: U2 is touring in Amsterdam that same day.

Meanwhile, Lady Gaga (endorsed Apple Ping at a 2010 event), John Legend (played at the 2006 introduction of Apple TV and a new iPod Nano), and Apple executive Dr. Dre himself are not currently touring, which makes them wildcards.

Naturally, Apple could recruit some talent from out of left field. It wouldn't be the first time Apple surprised us.

Also, Taylor Swift's Texas concert is at 5pm central time, meaning that she could very well hit both if she were very determined, since Apple's event starts in the morning.

And of course she's determined — she's Taylor Swift.

In case you don’t remember, this is how it looked

The duo built the M60 machine gun featured in the scene with the same equipment used on the show. They also used the same material for the wall used in the show to shoot at (with some wooden cutouts behind it representing Walt and the bad guys) to see if the bullets from the gun would actually go through the car, the wall, and hit the cutouts.

"Breaking Bad" creator Vince Gilligan was there to keep the setting authentic.

But when he does choose to drink, he definitely has a go-to hangover cure.

In a recent interview with DuJour, Craig shared the trick he uses to help him back to set after a night of drinking: Pedialyte.

"If you wake up in the morning and you’ve got one of those on standby and you down the whole lot ... you can carry on drinking," Craig said in the interview.

He isn’t the first grown-up to be turning to the children’s drink for hangover help.

According to a report on Marketplace.org, adult consumption of Pedialyte has grown by 57% since 2012.

"Today we know that more than a third of our sales actually come from that adult use," Michelle Zendah, a spokeswoman for Pedialyte manufacturer Abbott Laboratories, said to Marketplace.org

Craig said that he's been told that fellow actor Mark Wahlberg "swears by" the stuff.

Pedialyte even has a powdered version of its solution that makes it that much easier to just pour, stir, and drink.

The company has run ads that allude to its use as a hangover cure, with images of adults who can barely make it to the fridge to cure their groggy blues.

Over four years after her record-breaking album "21" was released, Adele will make her return to the music scene in November releasing her newest album, Billboard reports.

Adele has reportedly been hinting at a new album for over a year.

The record, which is rumored to be titled "25" will be her first album since 2011. Adele hasn't released a song since her hit "Skyfall" in 2012, titled for the James Bond movie.

"21" was such a hit she set a record at the Grammy's in 2012 capturing an astounding six awards. With "21" the British singer secured the greatest selling UK album of the millennium, according to The Guardian. The album also had incredible success in US sales, selling over 11 million copies.

Following "21" there were reports of the British singer suffering from vocal cord injuries, though there's no actual word of whether or not that contributed to her four-year disappearance from the music scene.

Either way, if her next album is even half as successful as her first two, Adele will again have the music world in a tizzy.

Donald Trump The Apprentice

Sure, Donald Trump is known for his colorful run for president, hosting NBC's "The Apprentice" from 2004 to 2015, frequently appearing as a talking head on news shows, or playing himself on "WrestleMania."

But what many have forgotten is that Trump made cameos in a string of '90s TV shows and movies, including "Sex and the City" and "Home Alone 2."

Since Trump's acting seemed to cool off after 2001's "Zoolander" appearance, let's take a walk down memory lane ...

1. "Ghosts Can't Do It" (1989)

In this crime fantasy starring Bo Derek, Trump played himself in a boardroom scene in which he exchanges a few lines with the model turned actress. The role won him a Razzie Award for "worst supporting actor."

In one incredible line, Trump says: "Be assured, Mrs. Scott, that in this room there are knives sharp enough to cut you to the bone and hearts cold enough to eat yours as hors d'oeuvres."

Bo Derek's character responds by flirtatiously saying to Trump: "You're too pretty to be bad."

"You noticed," Trump says with a smile and this pout that will forever haunt your dreams.

Here's a description of the movie from IMDB: "Elderly Scott kills himself after a heart attack wrecks his body, but then comes back as a ghost and convinces his loving young hot wife Kate to pick and kill a young man in order for Scott to possess his body and be with her again."

2. "Home Alone 2: Lost In New York" (1992)

As The Huffington Post so perfectly summed up: "Kevin McCallister encounters the future leader of the American top ninja apprentice warriors while wandering through the Plaza Hotel, which Trump had bought a few years prior. McCallister asks for directions to the lobby, to which the tycoon responds, not with 'hell toupee,' but with a rather nice, 'Down the hall and to the left.'"

Roger Ebert facetiously described the scene as "heartwarming" in his 2000 book, "I Hated, Hated, Hated This Movie."

3. "The Little Rascals" (1994)

Trump played "Waldo's Dad" in this classic hit.

The father-son casting was a natural fit:

4. "The Nanny" (1996)

Trump played himself in one episode of "The Nanny" titled "The Rosie Show." In the episode, Fran suddenly gets famous after giving parenting advice on "The Rosie O'Donnell Show," and Trump becomes one of her fancy new celebrity friends.

Fran begins to introduce Trump to her wealthy boss, Mr. Sheffield, but then suddenly realizes: "All you handsome zillionaires know each other."

5. "Spin City" (1998)

Trump once again played himself in an episode of "Spin City" titled "The Paul Lassiter Story." He exchanged a few lines of dialogue with Michael J. Fox about how quickly the real-estate tycoon finished his latest book.

"I wrote nine chapters in the first day," Trump boasts to Fox.

6. Also in 1998, Trump played himself in Woody Allen's "Celebrity" and a "VIP patron" in the star-studded "Studio 54" movie.

7. "Sex and the City" (1999)

In an episode titled "The Man, the Myth, the Viagra," Trump plays himself having lunch with one of Samantha's potential new love interests.

And just like that, Trump leaves Samantha's suitor to pursue her.

The man even uses Trump's name in his pickup line to Samantha: "Excuse me, I was so distracted by your beauty that I think I just agreed to finance Mr. Trump's next project. You owe me $150 million."

In a voiceover, Sarah Jessica Parker's character Carrie explains: "Samantha, a cosmopolitan, and Donald Trump — you just don't get more New York than that."

8. "Zoolander" (2001)

"Without Derek Zoolander, male modeling wouldn't be what it is today."

After 2001, Trump's appearances as himself began to dwindle.

But in 2004, he returned to the screen with his own NBC reality show, "The Apprentice," which he only left this summer so that he could focus on campaigning.

Trump reportedly earned $213 million from "The Apprentice" franchise over the years, and the show also earned him two Emmy nods.

NBC and Trump's relationship has soured since he announced his presidential run in mid-June. As a result of controversial statements Trump made regarding Mexican immigration, NBC severed professional ties with him in late June and refused to air his Miss USA Pageant.

Additionally, NBC said it will be moving forward with "Apprentice" without Trump. The network is searching for his replacement.

Who knew Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer were such besties?

It was only the other day when we found out the two were costarring in and writing a movie together. Now they're executing choreographed flash mobs with Hall of Fame musicians.

Hollywood's new dynamic duo appeared on-stage with Billy Joel during his concert at Chicago's Wrigley Field on Thursday night. Schumer and Lawrence appeared with a group of folks, which included Schumer's sister, Kim Caramele, and "Inside Amy Schumer" writer Kyle Dunnigan, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Before we get into the actual performance, take a look at the rehearsal:

Joel gave a hint at the beginning of his hit song "Uptown Girl," when he asked, "Any of you guys seen the movie "Trainwreck"?

Here are a few shots of the duo climbing onto Joel's piano (Alert: In the first one, JLaw kissed Schumer's feet.)
