'50 Shades Of Grey' Author: 'I'm Not Such A Pervert'

EL JamesFifty Shades of Grey author EL James on sex, sequels and the time her husband bought her a tin opener as a romantic Christmas present.

EL James gave a rare interview to launch Fifty Shades of Grey: The Classical Album, which features music that inspired her while writing the trilogy.

She spoke to Mark Ellen about the books, the forthcoming film and choosing "music to f--- to".

How did the classical music album come about?

I write to music all the time. I have music playing in my headphones and I have a huge playlist for writing. I have various songs for various things and some of them made it into the books.

Why is classical music particularly suited to a book of this kind?

The main protagonist, Christian Grey, likes classical music. He plays piano and that saves him very early on in his life. He's a talented but not particularly gifted pianist.

Why does classical music suit his character? Christian is a very cold and controlling individual...

I would say he’s controlling, I wouldn’t say he’s particularly cold. He warms up a bit. And it’s just one of his escapes. He’s a very lonely guy. He’s pretty f----- up.

Have you ever met anyone like him?

Oh, I wish!

In what way?

I think you can imagine.

What dimension does classical music bring to the book? Why did you choose classical?

Because I’m listening to it all the time. It's music to f--- to. We all want that.

How much research has gone into this work of fiction?

I had a lot of fun researching these books.

I get the most TMI emails you could ever hope for, which I hadn’t figured on because I hadn’t figured on any of this. People go and try stuff.

I imagine the books are for two types of people: people who probably used to have a fair amount of sex and now it’s dwindled slightly, and others who’ve never had sex at all - teenagers - who imagine what sex is going to be like.

Well, I hope teenagers aren’t reading it. I think a few are because I get emails from them as well, and I wish they weren’t. Women of all ages are reading it - women at university and college right through to women in their nineties, and I’m getting emails from them. The emails range from 'You’ve saved my marriage' to 'Thank you for this, I’m now adopting this therapy for my child that we adopted in Siberia who can’t bear to be touched and now we’ve seen these huge things happen to her and she’s moved on and getting better'. It’s this huge range of emails and it's completely unexpected. The really moving thing is from people who’ve been sexuallly abused saying 'This has really helped me'. They’re just extraordinary and it leaves me in tears.

Can I ask you about your own marriage? Your husband, Niall Leonard, wrote the other day that he was 'the least romantic fecker that ever lived' and for your first Christmas together he bought you a tin opener...

A tin opener! Jesus Christ on a bicycle. He never made that mistake again, trust me.

A lot of people are reading these books on a Kindle. There must be some element of 'I would like to read this erotic fiction but I'll pretend I'm reading War and Peace'?

Absolutely. E-readers has been very liberating for people because they can read whatever they like with no judgment. In fact, I designed the book covers because in my early thirties I read a lot of romantic fiction when I was slogging into and out of London on the Tube - such a hideous journey that I was just buried in these terrible books - and they had these horrible covers with women with their clothes falling off. I hated that, so I designed really discreet covers where nobody would know it's a really salacious novel.

Why have they been a success on such a scale?

I have no idea. I thought I could continue working, writing in the evening and this thing has taken off... I certainly didn’t foresee it and I still don’t quite believe it. it’s just bizarre.

Were you inspired by Story of O [the 1950s erotic novel by Pauline Réage]?

No. I haven't read it, though I’ve seen the film. The thing about Fifty Shades is it’s a very passionate love story. The Story of O is not a passionate love story, it’s sado-masochism at one end of the spectrum. So, no, no inspiration drawn from that whatsoever.

Which is the most powerful fantasy for women readers - is it the wildly adventurous sex in the book or is it this fantasy of being looked after and cared for and paid for by this 27-year-old billionaire?

No, it’s the love story. Women like to read a passionate love story.

If a man had written this book from the point of view of Christian Grey, would it have been less controversial?

I’ve no idea. All I know is that rather stupidly I put two of the first chapters in Christian’s POV at the end of Fifty Shades of Freedom. Every other tweet, if it’s not about Matt Bomer or Ian Somerhalder or Ryan Gosling, it’s 'Can we have Christian’s point of view please?'. So maybe I’ll do that.

In the book we discover Christian Grey is damaged by things that happened in his childhood. Is it trying to excuse the fact he's into sado-masochistic sex?

I do get asked this. BDSM just works for this particular work of fiction. I’ve met many people who are into this lifestyle who aren’t completely f----- up.

I have to ask you about equipment. How did you find out about all this? Did you research it online?

Yes. You’d be amazed what’s out there.

What songs do you think are best for making love to?

I think these things are in the eye of the beholder. I have songs that I write sex to. One of them is the Black Eyed Peas' Sexy. That’s a very sexy song. And that’s all I’m prepared to tell you. Because if I told you the other ones you wouldn’t believe it.

You once said writing these books was your midlife crisis writ large.

I kind of meant it. I worked for a company I was incredibly miserable at. Then I discovered writing after reading Twilight. I stopped going out and getting drunk quite so much, so it was good.

It’s happened so fast - you’ve gone from being completely unknown and now in the top 100 world’s most influential women.

It’s overwhelming and I try not to think about it too much. I wrote these books for me, for myself, and I would say to anyone who’s writing: write stuff for yourself. But other people seem to share my fantasies too, so that’s interesting. I’m not such a pervert. It was a huge relief to find that out.

Is there anybody from any era you would like to play Christian Grey?

Robert Redford was cute. Paul Newman was cute as well. I don’t know. This is not the road I want to travel. If you say 'so-and-so' and they don’t want to do it... it’s just best to keep your mouth shut.

Where next for you?

There’s so much going on in the next three months. I’m doing a book tour of the West Coast. I’m finally going to Seattle and Portland, where the books are set. I set them there because it started out as Twilight fan fiction. I didn’t know the places at all and I researched everything on Google Street View.

Gritty investigative journalism...

Absolutely.

The 10 Worst Box-Office Openings Of All Time

$
0

oogielovesDespite all the headlines, last weekend's indie kid flick "Oogieloves" was not "the worst" wide-opening release ever.

Since 1982, it was the 12th.

Rather, the Teletubby-like gang boast the lowest box-office weekend opening in more than 2,000 theaters.

With an estimated $20 million production budget, there's little chance it will break even.

Despite this, creator Kenn Viselman couldn't be more pleased with the media hype, saying the film was all about exposure. There's even a sequel in the works.

We wondered what else performed poorly in the past, so we've compiled together the ten worst box-office wide release weekends.
In all fairness, we consider a wide release any film in at least 1,500 theaters opening weekend, so the "Oogieloves" moves down a smidge on our list.

10. Double feature of "Spider-Man" / "Men in Black II" (2002): $2.11 million

Theater Count: 2,078

What may have been the oddest double feature engagement returned for a five run in theaters September 2002. Together, the films earned $6.6 million at the box office.

9. "The Real Cancun" (2003): $2.1 million

Theater Count: 2,261

Snoop Dogg made a cameo in the 2003 film about college students celebrating their Spring Break in Mexico.

After two weeks of release, the film from the producers of "The Real World" quickly dropped out of 2,037 theaters.

8. "Major League: Back to the Minors" (1998): $2.087 million

Theater Count: 2,322

This film was actually the third in the "Major League" franchise. While the first boasted actors Charlie Sheen and Wesley Snipes, the three-quel featured a brand new cast and no longer followed the Cleveland Indians, but rather the Minnesota Twins.

The film rounded out the box-office top ten in it's opening week, and quickly disappeared from theaters two weeks later with a total domestic gross of $3.5 million.

gold medalBefore the games, NBCUniversal projected they may lose $200 million on the summer games.

However, with 219.4 million viewers, the London Olympics became the most watched television event ever.

Yesterday, NBC Sports president Mark Lazarus announced the ratings boost for "strong performances" by the US allowed the company to break even on what they thought would be a huge loss.

The real winner for NBC were advertising sales totaling to near $1.25 billion–almost a 50 percent raise from 2008's Beijing games.

The 2010 Vancouver Olympics cost the company $223 million.

Scarlett Johansson

Bill Clinton may have gotten the crowds riled up during his impassioned speech at the Democratic National Convention Wednesday night, but it's the Hollywood celebrities who are bringing the heat.

Eva Longoria, Jessica Alba and Scarlett Johansson have proved a very different direction from the Republican National Convention's headliner, Clint Eastwood.

But can star power help re-elect the current president? Obama sure hopes so.

Eva Longoria

This former "Desperate Housewives" star is a co-chair for Obama's campaign. She is one of the most politically active celebs on Obama's side, even engaging in mudslinging herself. Earlier this year, Longoria told the Huffington Post Mitt Romney "is on the wrong side of every issue that pertains to Latinos." She made time in her busy schedule, including opening a new restaurant, to speak on the final night of the convention.

Watch her speech:

Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba has been tweeting non-stop while at the DNC with her husband, Cash Warren—but in this twitpic she posed with "Scrubs" actor, Zach Braff.

Kal Penn

This actor and producer was also the assistant director of the White House office of public engagement. Penn's speech this week included making fun of Clint Eastwood, as well as urging the youth of America to vote.

Christopher Nolan Sues His Agents Over 'Dark Knight' Profits

christopher nolan the dark knight rises

Batman can't help Christopher Nolan out of a legal dispute, so he's asking the court to intervene.

"Dark Knight Rises" director Nolan and his producing partner and wife, Emma Thomas, filed a lawsuit in L.A. court to help settle a money dispute over the director's films, according to TMZ.

He's not looking for any money, though.

Rather, Nolan wants to clear the air between his current and former agencies, WME and CAA, respectively.

The director's former agency CAA claims its still owed millions of dollars in commission for projects while it represented him from October 2005 through February 2012.

However, WME claims they should receive a portion of the funds.

Earlier this year, when an agent from CAA was fired, Nolan switched agencies with him to WME. As a result, WME now wants the commissions for all the films produced while the agent was with CAA.

Nolan simply wants to know who's owed what, because he's more than willing to pay.

From the court documents:

"Plaintiffs claim no interest in the Commissions. They are merely stakeholders of these Commissions and are ready and willing to deliver the Commissions to the party who is legally entitled to receive them."

Both 2008's "The Dark Knight" and this summer's "The Dark Knight Rises" have amassed more than $1 billion at the box office worldwide.

Since 2002, Nolan's films–"Insomnia," "The Prestige," "Inception, and the "Batman" franchise–have amassed more than $3.3 billion worldwide.

CLINT EASTWOOD: 'President Obama Is The Greatest Hoax Ever Perpetrated On The American People'

$

Clint Eastwood

Clint Eastwood has finally spoken out about the bizarre and controversial speech he gave at the Republic National Convention last week.

(I loved the speech. Just about everyone else I know hated it.)

Anyway, Eastwood has given an extensive interview about the speech to the newspaper of the tiny California town he used to be the mayor of, Carmel.

Among other things, Eastwood told the Carmel Pine Cone:

"President Obama is the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people."

Them's fighting words.

(Not to be annoying, but if you're going to say something like that, it seems as though you ought to back it up a bit. Eastwood didn't, at least not in the Carmel Pine Cone).

Some other nuggets:

  • Eastwood didn't tell anyone in the Romney campaign what he planned to say before the speech, because he didn't know
  • Eastwood got to the convention center about 15-20 minutes before he went on
  • Eastwood didn't think of the "empty chair" routine until a few minutes before show time

Eastwood said he had three points he wanted to make:

  • That not everybody in Hollywood is on the left,
  • that Obama has broken a lot of the promises he made when he took office, and
  • that the people should feel free to get rid of any politician who’s not doing a good job.

Film Leaders Demand Release Of Missing Syrian Filmmaker

$

More than two dozen leading film associations called early Friday for the immediate release of Syrian filmmaker and festival director Owra Nyrabia, who has been missing since Aug. 23.

The statement was signed by film organizations including the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the International Documentary Association, representing tens of thousands of leading filmmakers working in the U.S. and abroad.

Nyrabia (pictured with his wife Diana El-Jeiroudi at the Sarajevo film festival in July) was detained by authorities in Damascus on August 23rd -- his whereabouts remain unknown. He was believed to have been detained by Syrian security services as he prepared to board a flight from Damascus to Cairo.

On Thursday, the Toronto Film Festival released a statement expressing concern about the filmmaker.

“Nyrabia belongs to the emerging generation of Syrian filmmakers passionate about world cinema and passionate about freedom. We are extremely concerned by his arrest — filmmakers must be allowed to express themselves through their films, without fear of reprisal,” the festival release said.

Nyrabia's wife, Diana El-Jeiroudi, issued a statement last week saying she had had no contact with him and had heard from the airline that he did not board the plane. Nyrabia and his wife formed the first independent production company in Syria and founded Dox Box, a festival that brought international documentaries to Syria.

The organizations released this statement:

“Syrian filmmaker and festival director Orwa Nyrabia has been missing since Thursday, August 23 after attempting travel from the Damascus International Airport. Nyrabia works as a film producer and is one of the founders of the DOX BOX International Documentary Film Festival held in Syria. Reuters, Los Angeles Times, Al Jazeera, IDFA, Screen International, RealScreen and many other film organizations have covered the news of Orwa’s disappearance over the last few days.

“We, the undersigned, represent tens of thousands of leading filmmakers working around the world. As such, we believe that the artistry and power of film is vital to societies and cultures globally. We strongly defend the right of filmmakers everywhere to practice their art and bring humanity closer together through the telling of our shared stories.

"Orwa Nyrabia is not only a celebrated filmmaker, but also an artist who has devoted his life to bringing people and cultures together through film. Although Orwa is now being held in darkness somewhere, the filmmaking world is paying attention will continue to shine a light on him until he is safely reunited with his family. We call for his immediate return.

Songwriter Sues Warner Music Claiming Band 'Muse' Stole The Idea For Their Epic 3-Part Symphony

matt bellamy muse

Muse frontrunner Matt Bellamy may find himself in a "Supermassive Black Hole."

Songwriter Charles Bollfrass claims the British band stole his idea for its epic three-part symphony "Exogenesis" featured on it's latest album, "The Resistance."

Bollfrass is suing Warner Music who released the album in 2009 for $3.5 million claiming in federal court he previously wrote a "cinematic science-fiction rock opera" by the same name.

Muse received high praise for its beautifully intricate classical-rock ballad that closed out the record, with the album debuting at number 3 on the Billboard charts upon release

Bellamy previously told NME magazine he worked on the album's "hardest song" for years

Bollfrass claims he contacted Muse along with two other bands back in 2005 to compose the score for his opera; however, he says the band showed no interest.

According to Bollfrass, his opera follows the story of the end of the world, and hope to start life anew on another planet.

Drummer Dominic Howard described the symphony as the following to NME in July 2009:

"It's a real journey that song as well … you can’t really hear what Matt’s singing in the first part much, but the whole song is about leaving the destructive planet we’ve created, leaving it behind to go populate somewhere else in the universe."

If that isn't enough, Bollfrass also claims the group stole the image for their 2009 album cover from a storyboard of his opera.

Bollfrass is seeking damages for copyright infringement, unfair trade practices, and unfair competition.

The three-part classical rock symphony clocks in at just over 12 minutes.

You can listen to it in its entirety below:

The Tragic Evolution Of Princess Diana Magazine Covers

Princess Diana Magazine Cover

On Aug. 22, Prince Harry was thrown into the spotlight even more than usual after nude photos of the royal partying in Vegas surfaced all over the internet.

And about a week later, Aug. 31, marked the 15th anniversary of his mother Princess Diana's death.

While Harry has grown up accustomed to the limelight, his late mother wasn't always so at ease with the cameras.

What started as the public's interest in the seemingly fairytale marriage of Lady Diana and Prince Charles of Wales led to rumors of affairs, probing by the press, and ultimately, her death after a paparazzi car chase in 1997.

Whether it was the birth of her two sons or scandalous rumors of what was going on inside the palace, the press documented Lady Di's every move—for better or worse.

Retronaut posted the following 18 magazine cover photos showcasing the 16-year evolution of Princess Diana in the press.

1981: 20-year-old Lady Diana became The Princess of Wales when she married The Prince of Wales on July 29, 1981, at St Paul's Cathedral. The newlyweds' photo was blasted on magazine covers across the world.

1982: On June 21, Princess Diana gave birth to her and the Prince's first son and heir, William Arthur Philip Louis.

1983: Princess Diana's trouble with the invasive British press begins. She told a British publication, "I am finding it very difficult to cope with the pressures of being Princess of Wales, but I am learning to cope."
