ira glass marc maron mike birbiglia

The massive success of last fall's "Serial" true crime podcast and this year's "WTF" podcast interview with President Barack Obama marked a cultural shift in podcasts going from a niche interest to a mainstream form of media.

According to a report this April from the Pew Research Center, one-third of Americans age 12 or older have listened to at least one podcast episode, up from just 9% in 2008.

There are tons of great podcasts on nearly any subject you can think of, but we've collected some of our favorites that are perfect for those of us always eager to learn something new, whether it's about the economy, history, or even the workings of Hollywood.

Here's some prime listening material for your next commute:

'This American Life' provides a deep look into American society.

"This American Life" has become a byword for oral storytelling.

Beyond being a place for moving and hilarious stories, "This American Life" does staggering levels of reporting; few outlets made the financial crisis as human and understandable as Ira Glass and the gang.

It lives up to the hype.

'Fresh Air' will give you an intimate look at your favorite writers, celebrities, and journalists.

NPR's "Fresh Air" host Terry Gross has been on the air for more than four decades, and her interviewing skills have earned her accolades like the Peabody award, the Columbia Journalism Award, and a spot in the National Radio Hall of Fame.

Gross may have a smooth, relaxed speaking style, but the way she digs deep into her interview subjects will keep you engaged throughout the conversation, whether it's about Jake Gyllenhaal's acting process or what a writer learned from covering Mexican drug cartels.

'Freakonomics Radio' will show you surprising connections.

Journalist Stephen J. Dubner and economist Steven D. Levitt became sensations when their book "Freakonomics" was published in 2005.

In 2010, Dubner launched a podcast with the same mission as their bestselling books: ferreting out connections between seemingly unrelated things.

Unsurprisingly, the shows tend toward the intellectually provocative, with the biggest hits having titles like "Is College Really Worth It?" and "How Much Does the President of the U.S. Really Matter?"

'Prison Break' sequel is moving forward at Fox

prison break fox stars

Fox is moving forward on a continuation of its critically-acclaimed series, "Prison Break."

The show's original creator Paul Scheuring and stars Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell have signed on to return, Fox executives said during Thursday's Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills, according to TheWrap.

"Prison Break" aired for four seasons from 2005-2009. It told the story of two brothers, one who was in prison with a death sentence (played by Purcell) with another (Wentworth) who was planning his sibling's escape.

Fox is awaiting the show bible and scripts from Scheuring. “Once we have those written materials, I feel confident we’ll go straight to series with that one,” Fox Television Group Co-chairman and Co-CEO Gary Newman said about the proposed 10-episode return.

The sequel will continue after Season 4 and totally disregard the straight-to-video movie that killed off Miller’s character, Michael Scofield.

David Duchovney X FilesIn addition to the show's original fans and those who discovered the show later on Netflix or other video sites, Fox Television Group Co-chairman and Co-CEO Dana Walden believes the show can bring on new viewers.

“I would describe it as a bit of a sequel,” Walden said. “It picks up with the characters several years after we left them in the show. The brothers will be back. Some of the iconic characters from that show will be back. I don’t think Paul knows exactly where it’s going over the 10 episode arc, but it will address some of the questions from the original show but also appeal to new audiences.”

Fox has been going back to the programming well often with its "24" continuation last year and the upcoming "X-Files" return.

9 things you need to know before the 'True Detective' season finale

truedetective Lacey Terrell

Warning: spoilers ahead if you aren’t caught up on the season

The thing about the police procedural is you have to have a grasp on a lot of names and events to really follow the plot. Season 2 of “True Detective” has both in mass quantities.

So leading up to the season finale on Sunday, here are some major points from the show you should be familiar with.

1. Here’s the deal about those blue diamonds.

td jewelBlue diamonds were found in murdered city manager Ben Caspere's safe deposit box in episode 3. In episode 6, Woodrugh looks into the diamonds and learns they were robbed from a jewelry store during the 1992 LA riots, with the mom and pop owners murdered. As the store was looted soon after the robbery, the diamonds are untraceable.

Woodrugh has also found that Lt. Kevin Burris...

td burrisand Detective Teague Dixon...

td dixonwere working under Vinci Police Chief Holloway...

td hollowayat the time of the riots and the jewelry store was in their district. Caspere also worked in the same department. That leads Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch), Velcoro (Colin Farrell), and Bezzeridies (Rachel McAdams) to conclude that the officers were all working together. They stole the diamonds and Caspere helped move them.

The money they got for them went to Vinci mayor Austin Chessani...

td mayorwhich then led to them being the movers and shakers of one of the most corrupt cities in LA county.

2. Why this picture is so important.

td photoThese are the kids that were orphaned due to their parents being killed in the diamond heist by the rogue cops during the ’92 riots. Velcoro and Bezzeridies believe they met one of them. They think Erica, who worked in Caspere's office, may in fact really be Laura, one of the orphaned kids. They are currently trying to track her down.

3. Why Ben Caspere really died.

caspere finalCaspere holding onto those diamonds turned out to likely be what got him killed. Dixon was checking up on where they could be long before Woodrugh started. Caspere's house was probably tossed by Burris or Dixon looking for them. Then there’s the Hungarian prostitute, Tasha, who was taking photos of Caspere at the high class sex parties, like the one Bezzeridies infiltrated in episode 6, in the hopes to blackmail him. She was tortured and killed in a cabin in the woods upstate.

td cabin chairThe same was likely done to Caspere by the hands of Burris or Dixon when he didn’t give up the diamonds. The final piece of evidence for a 23-year-old double murder. Though Bezzeridies is curious why they would kill Caspere when that’s what launched the investigation in the first place. Hopefully that will be answered in the finale.

4. What we now know about that insane shootout.

td shootoutWe were led to believe that the shootout that occurred at the end of episode 4, in which a pimp named Ledo Amarilla...

td ledowas suspected of being Caspere’s murderer and was killed in the shootout, was the end to the Caspere case. Though months later Woodrugh, Bezzeridies, and Velcoro were pretty certain they didn’t really close the case, it was confirmed in episode 7. Woodrugh learned that the shootout was a set up, as Burris had arrested Amarilla in 2006 and released him soon after interrogation with no notes kept about any of it. Amarilla and Dixon, who was also killed in the firefight, cuts down the number of people who really know the motive of the Caspere murder.

5. State Attorney Katherine Davis is dead.

td attorney shotOne of the only people who actually was doing something to clean up the city was State Attorney Katherine Davis. But as it often goes with these shows, the ones out for justice get killed at some point, and that’s what happened in episode 7.

Davis was the one who made a special task force of Woodrugh, Bezzeridies, and Velcoro to investigate the Caspere murder again following the shootout in the hopes of uncovering collusion between Mayor Chessani and California Attorney General Richard Geldof...

td_gov_finalwho is now running for governor. Now with Davis out of the picture — killed, Velcoro believes, with one of his guns — he and Bezzeridies (due to stabbing of the security guard at the sex party at the end of episode 6) are now considered fugitives. Leaving Woodrugh the only one able to roam free to investigate things.

6. Woodrugh is dead.

td ep 7 8But that stopped at the end of episode 7 by the gun of Burris. At first Holloway tried to blackmail Woodrugh with pictures of him with another man. But after Woodrugh was able to shoot his way out of that situation, the backup plan seemed to be Burris killing Woodrugh. (Guess we’ll never get the story behind those scars on his body.) With Woodrugh now dead, Bezzeridies and Velcoro have to work in the shadows as the law is after them.

7. Velcoro and Bezzeridies are finally a thing.

td ep 7 7While in a cabin upstate waiting for Woodrugh, Bezzeridies and Velcoro finally give into what we had assumed all season was going to happen and have sex. We’ll see in the finale if that plays into how the season concludes.

8. The person behind the crow mask.

TD crowIn episode 2, Velcoro investigates Caspere’s secret house that he brought prostitutes to. While checking it out a person wearing all black and a crow mask shoots him with what we find out in the next episode were rubber buckshots. The same person with the mask was driving around Caspere in the first episode. Seeing it’s likely Burris or Dixon who killed Caspere, it’s also likely one of them is the man behind the mask. Looking at the size of the person that shot Velcoro, it looks more like Burris’ build. Through the season we got more hints, like that the cop that gave Irina the prostitute Caspere’s belongings was described as “thin, white” and “a cop.” Sounds like Burris more than Dixon. Also, it was Burris who had a lot of questions for Velcoro when he left Vinci PD following the shootout. And with Dixon now dead all fingers point to Burris.

9. Frank Semyon is preparing to hijack a big money drop.

truedetective15_50 Lacey TerrellThe whole season Frank Semyon (Vince Vaughn) has been trying to figure out who killed Caspere, his partner in the creation of a high-speed rail line through California. With Caspere dead, so was Semyon’s dream to go legit. So he had to turn back to his casino in Vinci and running clubs where he takes a percentage of drugs being sold and prostitution.

But in episode 7, while interrogating his underling Blake, who has turned on him...

true detective ep 6 2Semyon finds out that he was always the patsy.

Osip Agranov, a Russian gangster who was supposed to go in with Semyon on the rail line...

td osipdouble crossed him and has teamed with Chessani’s son, Tony, to take over the rail line...

td tonyTony will also take over his father’s position as mayor, giving Agranov power of Vinci. Agranov has also taken ownership of the casino and clubs, pushing Semyon out of everything. Blake also revealed to Semyon that there is to be a drop of $12 million from Agranov to Tony. Semyon kills Blake, cleans out the money in the safes at his properties and lights the buildings on fire. You better believe Semyon plans to be at that money drop.

Celebrity Gatekeepers: 7 personal assistants to Hollywood stars explain what their days are like

bethenny frankell

While the celebrity lifestyle may appear to be filled with glitzy red carpets and A-list events, there's plenty that goes on behind-the-scenes that isn't quite as glamorous.

Behind most celebrities is a team of people working to make sure everything looks perfect and runs smoothly in the hectic life of a star. In addition to agents, managers, publicists, and a glam squad, many stars also have a personal assistant managing the logistics of their hectic lives.

From booking flights to planning meetings and anything in between, assistants are the backbone of the busy schedules of many stars and entrepreneurs..

In New York, assistants for many leading celebrities and business moguls participate in a professional group called New York Celebrity Assistants.

We spoke with seven assistants from the association and learned about what it's like to work for a high-profile employer in New York City.

Meghan Herd helps handle the chaotic life of "Real Housewives" mogul Bethenny Frankel

"No two days are ever the same" when working for Skinnygirl Cocktails founder Bethenny Frankel, Frankel's executive assistant, Meghan Herd, tells Business Insider.

Herd began working for the entrepreneur and star of Bravo's "The Real Houswives of New York" in 2013, after deciding that she "needed a change" from her job as an assistant to a number of leading musicians.

As Frankel's assistant, Herd says she now wears "many hats."

"Whether I am trying to get a seat on a flight an hour before take-off, getting a table at the hottest new restaurant or making sure the office is running smoothly," Herd says, "I am proud of getting things done when somebody says it can’t be done."

Herd occassionally appears alongside her employer on "Real Housewives," and in an interview with Hollywood Life, Herd describes the experience of handling Frankel's chaotic travel schedule as being "like that scene in 'Home Alone' — we're just running to the gate everytime."

Vanessa King has worked closely with Julianne Moore for nearly ten years

2014 was a busy year for actress Julianne Moore.

As the assistant to Moore and her husband, filmmaker Bart Freundlich, Vanessa King acted as a “sort of Mission Control” for the actress’s travel plans and schedules during the hectic award season that culminated in Moore’s Oscar win for Best Actress.

King started the job nearly a decade ago, after leaving another assistant gig with the family who lived across the street from Moore. “I ran into Julie on the street,” King says, “and she asked if I was interested in working with her.”

Today, King works out of her employers’ luxurious West Village apartment, acting as a contact point for business matters and charities — such as The Children’s Health Fund and the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance, in which Moore is actively involved.

Gail Abrahamsen is the right-hand woman to "Shark Tank" star and real estate mogul Barbara Corcoran

Gail Abrahamsen became the personal assitant to real estate mogul Barbara Corcoran in 2005, and her job has grown in responsibilty as Corcoran's star has risen in recent years with her recurring role as a judge on ABC's "Shark Tank."

Handling Corcoran's three email accounts, Abrahamsen responds to over 300 emails per day. "Many hours are spent managing her endless media/TV appearance requests and making sure all are on the calendar (our bible)," Abrahamsen says.

When Corcoran requested a lavish launch party for her book, "Shark Tales," in 2011, Abrahamsen managed to come through with all of her employer's eclectic demands — including finding a model to dress up as a mermaid and two twin girls to greet her guests in swimsuits.

Whether planning out her employer's many speaking events or tracking down a "lost heirloom pearl necklace at the XpresSpa in JFK airport," Abrahamsen admits that there's "never a dull moment" on the job.

"Every day is a new adventure at Barbara Corcoran Inc.," she says.

'Fantastic Four' gets clobbered at the box office

Fantastic Four 2015 Poster

The latest reboot of "Fantastic Four," one of the legendary Marvel superhero teams owned by Twentieth Century Fox, looks to be heading for a forgettable theatrical run as the film took in a measly $26.2 million (estimated) its opening weekend, according to BoxOffice.com.

That wasn't enough to top "Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation," which was No. 1 at the box office for a second week in a row with an estimated $29.4 million, according to Exhibitor Relations.

Playing on close to 4,000 screens, projections had "Fantastic Four" earning $45 million, according to Box Office Mojo. That's even counting the horrid reviews the movie received, which have left it with a 9% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

But things likely went from bad to worse when "Fantastic Four" director Josh Trank tweeted, and later deleted, Thursday night that it was the studio's fault for the film's poor reviews.

Here's Trank's tweet that many screen-grabbed for posterity.

josh trank tweetTrank's comments combined with the bad word of mouth likely led to the film's poor showing.

The big winner of the weekend is "The Gift," which came in third place with an estimated $12 million, according to Deadline. The indie thriller starring Jason Bateman is already in the black, as it was made for around $5 million with a $2.5 million marketing cost, according to Deadline.

Here's how 50 Cent says his entire ~$25 million fortune vanished

Rapper Curtis Jackson, aka "50 Cent," claims that his assets are worth about $25 million, but that two separate court-ordered payments plus other high expenses have pushed him into bankruptcy.

He filed a statement of his financials in Connecticut bankruptcy court on Monday, and Business Insider has obtained a copy of it.

Here's how Jackson says he's drained his millions in just a few years' time.

The money going out: $108,000 per month in expenses and millions of dollars in lawsuits

50 cent courtApparently, 50 Cent was primarily forced into filing for bankruptcy after two court judgments put him over the top. There's the $7 million owed to Lastonia Leviston, the woman had won the payment in court after the rapper allegedly released a sex tape of her to embarrass the rapper's nemesis, Rick Ross, who had fathered one of her children.

And then, there's the electronics company Sleek Audio, which he owes an $18 million court-ordered payment after a partnership to produce headphones fell apart.

Those court orders total about $25 million, the amount 50 Cent claims in assets.

But, that's just the tip of the iceberg. The rapper claims another $7 million in liabilities.

50 Cent says he has about $108,000 in monthly expenses, which include his homes and personal expenses.

50 Cent Curtis Jackson House

His lavish Connecticut house the one with 21 bedrooms, 24 bathrooms, and a nightclub — costs about $72,000 a month to maintain, he says. He spends about $5,000 per month on just the gardening.

See his housing costs below:

50 cent household expenses

He also pays a monthly $5,745 Bentley car lease and $12,000 in child support for two children. Additionally, he supports a grandparent in the amount of $2,500 a month.

50 Cent keeps himself looking good with about $3,000 a month on clothes and $1,000 a month on grooming.

See his personal expenses below:

What money is coming in? He has about $10 million in cash and investments

As far as his income, 50 Cent claimed he made $3.3 million from his music so far this year. He also made about $372,000 from SMS, his company that makes headphones, in 2015. Additionally, he has made $771,000 from numerous films, touring, merchandising, and other pursuits with G-Unit, 50 Cent's record label.

The rapper has $10 million in cash and $500,000 in cars, including three Chevy Suburbans and a 2010 Rolls Royce.

There is no mention of the income he made from film and TV work. Previously, 50 Cent stated that he made $100,000 each on "Southpaw" and "Spy," according to the court transcript acquired by Business Insider. As for Starz drama "Power," which the rapper acts in and executive produces, 50 Cent testified that he has made $150,000.

Here's a look at his income, from the filing:

50 Cent's attorney provided a statement to BI.

“A filing for personal bankruptcy protection is a complex and often time-consuming process,” says William A. Brewer III, partner at Brewer, Attorneys & Counselors. “Lost in the reporting about Mr. Jackson’s assets, liabilities and individual expenses is the reason for the filing – to pursue an orderly reorganization of his financial affairs.”

Brewer added, “It is important to remember the filing for protection permits Mr. Jackson to continue his active involvement in numerous business, entertainment and philanthropic interests.”

There's one very memorable scene in HBO's new Kurt Cobain documentary

0

kurtcobain09_hbo

After receiving three Emmy nominations following its airing on HBO in May, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck” is back in theaters Friday.

The documentary has a treasure trove of never-before-seen material that looks back on the childhood and private life of the legendary lead singer of Nirvana, who tragically took his own life in April 1994 at the age of 27.

But there’s one particular piece in the film, directed by Brett Morgen (“The Kid Stays in the Picture”) that no one, not even Cobain’s family or closest friends, ever knew existed.

Morgen had been working on the project for five years when he finally got the call. In 2013, he was granted access to a storage space where Cobain’s most intimate materials — journals he wrote and paintings he created — are kept.

“One of the things that would change the direction of the film was a box that I found that said, ‘cassettes,’” Morgen told Business Insider.

montage of heck finalSurprised to find the box, as no one told him any audio was stored there, Morgen tracked down a few cassette decks and began transferring them into digital files.

Hidden among the hours of recordings of Cobain playing music and joking around, he came across a story Cobain taped in 1988.

“I knew instantly it was different because he was performing it and was doing multiple takes on it,” Morgen explained. “It was a little more narrative than most of Kurt’s art.”

The story Cobain tells in the recording is of his first sexual encounter, which then leads to the first time he contemplated suicide.

Morgen brought the recording to the Cobain family, who had never heard it. He even brought it to the attention of Cobain’s biographer, Charles R. Cross, who wasn't aware of its existence, either.

Morgen knew it needed to be in the film, but how could he make it work visually for the movie?

Morgen is famously known for using animation in his work. In "The Kid Stays in the Picture," he used effects to bring still photography to life in his story of Hollywood mogul Robert Evans.

robert evans

And the 2007 film, "Chicago 10 a look at the anti-war protestors put on trial following the 1968 Democratic National Convention  is entirely animated.

But Morgen admits he initially had no intention of animating the Cobain audio.

“We were going to animate his art and his journals (made for the film by artist Stefan Nadelman), but there was never a discussion about animating Kurt,” he said.

But then he came across the work of Dutch artist/filmmaker Hisko Hulsing and his animated film, "Junkyard.

“I felt that he had a similar dystopian view of the world that Kurt had, but a much better craftsman than Kurt,” said Morgen of Hulsing. “But the view and the tone had a lot of similarities, a lot of darkness and twisted reality.”

Junkyard finalMorgen asked Hulsing to join the project to animate the Cobain audio story. Hulsing also animated another audio sequence later on in the film in which Cobain is recording the mundane moments of his life while living at his girlfriend’s house in the ‘80s.

“I’ve never been a Nirvana fan,” Hulsing admits. “I think I was 21 when ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ became a hit and I just had a dark, psychotic adolescence, so it didn’t strike a right cord for me.”

But Hulsing said he agreed to come on because he was fascinated by Morgen’s mission to celebrate Cobain’s life, not mythologize his death.

kurtcobain06 Wendy O'Connor HBOMorgen played Hulsing an edited version of the audio that was more polished and streamlined than the original recording he discovered in the cardboard box. Morgen also came up with a shot list for Hulsing to follow while making the animation, and the two went back and forth for months on storyboards.

From his small studio in Amsterdam, Hulsing compiled a team of 27 people (18 of them animators) and for four months they worked on not only the Cobain audio story, but also on the other portion of the film Hulsing was responsible for. For the 85 shots that were Hulsing's responsibility, they produced 6,000 animations and 60 oil paintings on canvas. Some of those canvas paintings were as large as six feet.

Hulsing would then take a digital picture of the canvas, input the animation that would go in front of it, and send it to Morgen back in L.A. for approval.

Here's an animated rendition of Cobain as a teenager.

cobain bedBelow is an excerpt from Cobain’s audio story in "Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck," accompanied by select GIFs of Hulsing’s animation from the sequence in the film.

cobain friendsTrevor was a guy I hated but resorted to becoming friends with because he was the only person I could get pot from. He was the kingpin. Trevor, Ace, John, Darin, all white-trash low-life scum of the earth, according to the jocks. They had been going to this girl's house after school and they invited me. We got to the door and a very fat girl let us in.

cobain funny girlIt wasn't obvious to me for over an hour that this girl seemed kind of quiet until one of the guys pointed out that she was in a Special Ed class. I'm sure a lot of kids would call her a retard and some just slow, and at the time, and still to this day, I would call her quiet and illiterate. But not retarded.

cobain stairsThe object of the guys who'd been going there for the past month was to steal booze from the downstairs basement of her house. While others distracted her, one would go down and take a fifth and then exit the downstairs. We did this routine every other day and got away with it for, oh, about a month.

And during that month happened to be the epitome of my mental abuse from my mother. It turned out that pot didn't help me escape my troubles too well anymore, and I was actually enjoying doing rebellious things like stealing booze and busting store windows.

cobain stealBut nothing ever mattered. I decided within the next month I would not sit on my roof and think about jumping but I'll actually kill myself. And I wasn't going out of this world without actually knowing what it was like to get laid.

cobain contemplateSo one day after school I went to the girl's house alone and invited myself in and she offered me some Twinkies and I sat on her lap and I said, "Let's f---."

cobain girlAnd I touched her and she went into her bedroom and got undressed in front of me and I watched and actually realized it was actually happening. So I tried to f--- her but didn't know how, so I asked her if she'd done this before and she said, a lot of times, mainly with her cousin.

I got grossed out very heavily with her smell and her sweat reeked, so I left. My conscious grew to where I couldn't go to school for a week and when I did I got in-house suspension for skipping.

cobain classAnd that day the girl's father came in screaming and accusing someone of taking advantage of his daughter. And so during lunch rumors started and by the next day everyone was waiting for me to yell and cuss and spit at me, calling me "the retard f----r."

cobain bottleI couldn't handle the ridicule. So I got high and drunk, I walked down to the train tracks and laid down and put two big pieces of cement on my chest and legs and waited for the eleven o'clock train.

cobain trainAnd the train came closer, and closer, and closer and went on the next track besides me. And it stood over me over.

cobain tracksDetention from school had an effect on me, and the train scared me enough to try to rehabilitate myself by lifting weights and mathematics seemed to be improving so I became less manically depressed. I still didn't have any friends because I hated everyone for they were so phony.

Hulsing said the bleak look he gave the animation came from what he observed looking at photos of Aberdeen, Washington, where Cobain grew up.

"Images and videos of Aberdeen clearly show that it's often grey and rainy," Hulsing said. "I believe that the somber palette adds a lot of darkness and hopelessness to the story of young, suicidal Kurt."

cobain aberdeenHulsing also said that Cobain’s blank facial features in the story came from how he and Morgen believed Kurt felt in his social setting. "He's hanging out with a group he's not a real part of," he said. "Kurt's own voiceover already explains his own state of mind as a teenager, the way he felt rejected and ridiculed, I didn't want to overdo that."

cobain blinkThere were also some visuals that don’t match what Cobain says, particularly the line when he goes to the railroad tracks to commit suicide: “Put two big pieces of cement on my chest and legs and waited for the eleven o'clock train." According to Morgen, that was intentional. "I decided to take that one moment and deviate from Kurt's narrative just a bit to kind of embrace the subjectivity of the sequencing and acknowledging that we are interpreting these events," he said.

The music played over the telling of the story is a string arrangement of the Nirvana hit, “Smells Like Teen Spirit," arranged by composer Jeff Danna. "There was already some existing music of strings playing 'Smells Like Teen Spirit,'" Hulsing said. "So [Morgen] put that under my moving storyboards in the beginning and it really worked for Brett, so later he had a new composition done."

kurtcobain10_TheEndOfMusicLLC_HBOLooking back on making the film, Morgen said Hulsing’s work was always the wild card.

"Once we saw the final assembly edit, Joe Beshenkovsky, who edited the film with me, both of us felt we were pretty comfortable where we landed," said Morgen. "But at the same time we knew Hisko was just getting started [on animating]. There was this fear: 'Hisko is going to be our Achilles heel if he doesn't deliver.' It's not like we could cut out the sequence. I've had some treacherous experiences with animation not really working out the way you'd hoped."

But when Hulsing delivered the first drawings, all the anxiety rushed away.

“He gave me a gift," Morgen said. "He was really committed to the work. He really wanted to get it right and I really appreciate that about him."

Hulsing said with a chuckle about the experience, "I'm still recovering."

Hisko Hulsing Jaroslav ReptaWhat’s fascinating to learn about Cobain’s audio story is that it may not be true.

“I met Krist Novoselic, the bass player for Nirvana, at Sundance and he said that he knew Kurt very well from a young age and he never heard that story before," said Hulsing.

Morgen and Cobain’s wife, Courtney Love, also questioned the story’s veracity at a Q&A following the film’s screening at the Tribeca Film Festival in April.

But, Morgen told BI, whether it’s real or not doesn’t interest him.

“I’m not a writer or a historian,” he said. “I’m making a movie and it’s a depiction of his art, so I’m out for an emotional truth.”

Here's how things turned out for the main characters on the 'True Detective' season finale

truedetective s2 ep 8 2 Lacey Terrell

Waring: MAJOR spoilers ahead

The finale to season 2 of "True Detective" wound up to be as violent and unforgiving as the whole season. And that's a good thing. One of the only downfalls of the first season of the series was how nicely everything was tied up by the final episode, with detectives Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Hart (Woody Harrelson) limping off into the darkness as best friends.

It wasn't likely "True Detective" creator Nic Pizzolatto would do that a second time.

Here's how things turned out for the main characters of season 2 that made it to the finale.

Detective Ray Velcoro

truedetective s2 ep 8 Lacey Terrell
After tracking down the shotgun-wielding crow-mask wearing guy who shot him in episode 2 (turned out it was one of the twins from the blue diamond heist, not Burris)...

true detective s2 ep8 5Velcoro (Collin Farrell) teamed with Frank Semyon (Vince Vaughn) to step in on the $12 million money drop between the men who double crossed Semyon in the creation of the rail line, Osip Agronov and Jacob McCandless. Following killing Agronov and McCandless, Velcoro and Semyon split the money and go their separate ways. Semyon to his wife and Velcoro to connect with Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams) and live out their days in Mexico.

However, Velcoro makes the mistake of attempting to see his son one last time. It's a tough moment with his son having the glass-encased LAPD badge Velcoro gave him, but it gave crooked cop Burris (the one who killed Woodrough (Taylor Kitsch) in the penultimate episode) the chance to bug Velcoro's car with the hopes of Velcoro leading him to Bezzeridies.

But Velcoro sees what's happened and leads Burris and his goons instead to the mountains...

true detective s2 ep 8 6where a gun fight leads to Velcoro being shot and killed.

Frank Semyon

truedetective s2 ep 8 4 Lacey Terrell
Following cleaning out the safes in the casino and clubs he owns before burning them to the ground, Semyon has one last piece of business, paying back Osip and McCandless for double crossing him on the rail line deal. After he and Velcoro are successful in that, Semyon takes his half of the $12 million and picks up a new passport and car before heading off to meet his wife. But on the way he gets cornered by the drug dealers he agreed to let them sell drugs at his clubs, and is driven against his will to the desert.

Unhappy the clubs are no longer around, the men take $1 million from Semyon to close their business. But when one of their men wants Semyon's suit things go bad as Semyon smacks him around. One of the men stabs Semyon in the ribs during the scuffle and he's left in the desert to bleed out.

With some powerful images in his final moments of life (seeing visions of his abusive father and people in the past he's done wrong)...

true detective s2 ep 8 7Semyon dies in the dessert after seeing a vision of his wife.

Detective Ani Bezzerides

truedetective s2 ep 8 3 Lacey Terrell
Pizzolatto was criticized heavily for the lack of strong female characters in season 1, and though Bezzeridies was a vast improvement, she could have been better used in the finale.

After she and Velcoro sleep together, they learn that Woodrough is dead after Burris answers his cell phone. They can either make a run for it or continue to try to uncover what's really behind the Caspere murder. They choose the latter and track down the whereabouts of the twins who were orphaned after the heist of the blue diamonds in 1992.

Though Bezzerides comes to Velcoro's rescue when he's almost shot by Burris, Bezzerides is on the sidelines the rest of the episode. Preparing for Velcoro's arrival following his successful mission with Semyon to get the $12 million so they can take off to Mexico together. The plans change when he tells her that he's being tailed.

Velcoro ends up going to Mexico on her own. Time passes and she has a baby (presumably Velcoro's from their fling). She also racks down a Times reporter so she can hand off all the evidence she, Velcoro, and Woodrough compiled to take down the big wigs in Vinci. And she befriends Semyon's wife.

true detective s2 ep 8 8
The final scene is Bezzerides and her child, Semyon's wife, and her bodyguard leaving together to a new life traveling through Mexico undetected.

Yes, an intentional message by Pizzolatto that he's capable to have a strong female lead, but it would have been great to see her in more of the action.

Donald Trump on Megyn Kelly: 'She should really be apologizing to me'

donald trump

Real-estate mogul Donald Trump thinks Fox News host Megyn Kelly should apologize to him — not the other way around.

The Republican presidential candidate went on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Monday, slamming Kelly for asking an "inappropriate" question at last week's first Republican presidential debate.

"The fact is that she asked me a very inappropriate question," Trump said. "She should really be apologizing to me, [if] you want to know the truth."

Trump has repeatedly assailed Kelly since she moderated the first Republican primary debate last week. Kelly angered Trump by confronting him with disparaging terms he has used to describe women, including "fat pigs," "dogs," and "slobs."

In his pushback, however, Trump ignited a new media firestorm during a Friday CNN interview by launching what his critic labeled a sexist attack against her.

"You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes. Blood coming out of her wherever," Trump said of Kelly's debate performance.

The influential Red State gathering of conservatives responded by demanding Trump apologize and then by rescinding his invitation from its gathering last weekend. The real-estate developer, however, isn't backing down:

"Morning Joe" host Joe Scarborough pressed Trump on whether he and anyone from Fox had talked since his spat with Kelly. But Trump wouldn't say whether any discussions had taken place.

"I don't want to say it," Trump said. "Why should say it? I'm not going to embarrass anybody. My whole life has been led on the theory that I do not want to embarrass people."

He went on to muse about whether he should even be overly concerned about his feud with Fox.

"The fact is that I think I don't get treated well by Fox," he said. "And that's all right because look what happens. I don't understand it myself: I have double-digit leads in every poll. I don't know if you saw, Georgia's just came out. I'm at 34%. And it's like a lot of good things are happening, so maybe I should just leave it the way it is."

Check out new footage from ‘The Force Awakens’ that appears in a South Korean TV spot for the movie

We’re just over four months before the premiere of “Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens,” and every bit of footage that we are teased with just builds our excitement.

Like this 30 second TV spot released in South Korea for the movie, which is now on the YouTube channel for Star Wars Korea.

The opening reveals a shot of the First Order, which was formed following the Empire’s defeat at the end of “Return of the Jedi.”

It looks like they are growing in numbers as a raising crane shot shows a mass number of Stormtroopers and rows of TIE Fighters alongside them. With the voiceover, “There’s been an awakening…” (which we heard before in the US trailers).

the force awakens First OrderLooking a little closer, it’s likely that General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson), who oversees the First Order, is addressing the platoons. With Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie), among the higher-ranking officers behind Hux.

the_force_awakens_First_Order taggedThe setting could also possibly be Starkiller Base, which is the primary post for the First Order.

Sometimes trailers and TV spots show footage that ends up not appearing in the final version of the movie. Regardless, what we see from this, and the other footage that has been released, is that director JJ Abrams is certainly intending to show us striking visuals that touch on what we remember from the original trilogy  but with a fresher feel.

'Jackass' star Steve-O arrested after an epic stunt including a 100-foot crane and an inflatable whale in protest of SeaWorld

0
0

"Jackass" star Steve-O, whose real name is Stephen Glover, was arrested Sunday after climbing a 100-foot crane in Hollywood to display a blow-up whale with the writing: "SeaWorld Sucks."

Steve-O teased the stunt on Saturday on Instagram, writing: "This is Shammy. We're gonna do a big dangerous stunt tomorrow in Los Angeles that will probably get me in a lot of trouble, and you can watch it happen at 7pm PST via a live stream on my Facebook page. #SeeYouAt7pmTomorrow #yeahdude"

Steve-O, 41, documented the entire process with short videos on Facebook while wearing a "Blackfish" T-shirt, promoting the anti-SeaWorld documentary.

First, he explained how the stunt was going to work and the required tools in his "stunt pack":

He updated fans via Facebook with photos as he climbed the crane:

Then things got a little scary:

"We definitely have their attention" Steve-O says from the top of the crane while pointing to police cars below:

As the sun set on Steve-O, tons of fire trucks surrounded the crane. "That is a lot, a lot of [expletive] firetrucks," he says in the below video, which he captioned: "Anyone wanna bail me out of jail?"

"More than 80 firemen were called to the scene after receiving calls about a possible suicide attempt," reports the New York Daily News. "Crews began preparing an air cushion rescue as increasingly more fire trucks appeared."

This was the last video Steve-O posted to his Facebook page. After climbing back down the crane about an hour after he climbed up, the MTV star was taken into police custody around 9 p.m.

LAPD Lt. Michael Ling confirmed to the LA Times that Steve-O was "arrested and is expected to be booked on suspicion of trespassing, setting a firework without a permit, and conspiracy to commit a crime. Investigators are still determining what charges apply."

According to the LA Times, this isn't the first time Steve-O has publicly spoken out about SeaWorld's alleged treatment of their animals:

Last year, he was charged with a traffic infraction for an anti-SeaWorld stunt in which he defaced a freeway sign in San Diego. He posted a YouTube video in August 2014 showing him climbing up the freeway sign to attach the word "sucks'' after the words "Sea World."

Steve-O SeaWorld

Steve-O's latest stunt comes just days after SeaWorld announced it has witnessed a major decline in attendance and 84%  drop in profits during its most recent quarter, largely in part due to the 2013 release of the "Blackfish" documentary.

According to the SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. Report as reported by The Wrap:

The theme park suffered an 84 percent drop in its net second-quarter income; after a $37.4 million haul in 2014, the park was only able to net $5.8 million in 2015. Total revenues for the quarter fell from $405.2 million in 2014 to $391.6 million, marking a 3 percent drop year over year.

The report also shows that Q2 attendance dropped by 100,000 visitors from 6.58 million in 2014 to 6.48 million.

Mark Cuban explains what he hates most on 'Shark Tank'

0
0

mark cuban shark tank

Mark Cuban has repeatedly said the real reason he's stayed in the cast of "Shark Tank" is because he strongly supports the way it inspires people, especially kids, to become entrepreneurs. He likes to call the show "the New Age lemonade stand."

But despite saying that he loves the way the show unites families around an interest in business, he has some strong feelings about kids who appear in the Tank.

"I hate when we have kids on," Cuban tells Grantland writer Zach Lowe on Lowe's podcast. "Hate, hate, hate. Kids and animals. Kids and animals are the worst. The worst, the worst, the worst."

It's not that he's a curmudgeon, exactly. It's just that he thinks these aspects of "good TV" get in the way of business.

He adopted a rule from the renowned venture capitalist Fred Wilson: "The longer the backstory, the worse the deal." This has made Cuban start getting wary any time there's a sob story about an entrepreneur's struggle, or an inspirational tale of a child prodigy, or a cute dog brought in with the intention of making the investors smile.

He especially hates the way so-called child entrepreneurs are often merely mascots for the company their parent created and operates.

It's also frustrating, he tells Lowe, that he feels the need to censor himself when a kid is in the room. He explains that he's not going to call a child's dad an idiot in front of them if that's what he thinks.

"You just can't be honest," Cuban says.

You can listen to the full podcast episode at Grantland, where Lowe and Cuban discuss Cuban's pro basketball team the Dallas Mavericks, the NBA, and investing.

Prince reportedly says record contracts are like 'slavery'

Prince (singer)

One of music's most popular artists has an interesting take on record deals: "I'm gonna say the word – slavery," said Prince, according to NPR"I would tell any young artist ... don't sign."

The comments came in a small meeting with reporters, who were not allowed to record the event. Prince objects to record company contracts as they give artists little control over where their music is distributed, and the revenue from new distribution deals, according to NPR's report.

Prince recently pulled his music from all streaming services except Tidal, and announced that he'd release his next album solely with Jay Z's streaming service.

His move to Tidal is based on the company's promise to let artists do what they want to do, and follow their own dreams for their career.

"Once we have our own resources, we can provide what we need for ourselves," Prince said. "Jay Z spent $100 million of his own money to build his own service."

He added, "We have to show support for artists who are trying to own things for themselves."

Prince also stated that he thinks streaming services should restructure how they pay artists. He wants them to pay musicians directly so other factors such as record labels don't get a share.

Prince's move to Tidal comes at a time when the company is seriously struggling. But if the service can get to get more artists to pledge their sole allegiance, it could be a game changer.

It'll be interesting if more artists will move to Tidal and other streaming platforms to gain freedom. While the freedom might be good for specific artists, it would force consumers to chose which streaming service to get a membership with, and they would therefore miss out on tons of service-exclusive music.

Prince’s next album, "HITNRUN" will be available exclusively on Tidal Sept. 7.

Meet the supermodel who is changing how the retail industry treats plus size women

In February 2015, a model from Nebraska made history when she appeared as the first-ever truly plus size model in an ad in Sports Illustrated's swimsuit edition.

And Ashley Graham didn't stop there.

She recently launched a plus-size line with lingerie company Addition Elle at Nordstrom, tapping into a market that Victoria's Secret hasn't touched.

Graham talked to Business Insider about the moves she's made in the modeling and lingerie businesses, and how she's working to help transform society's perceptions of plus size women.

Graham became a model out of sheer luck (and good looks).

"It was one of those stories that you’ve heard a million times," she recalled to Business Insider. "Where I was in a mall, I was 12 years old, and somebody came up to me and said, 'hey — you wanna be a model?' And there happened to be a scout right there, and I look over and there’s like a line of like 300 girls in this mall in Nebraska and I was like uhhh... sure!"

She credits her parents with helping her sit things straight. "Thank God my dad [is] a businessman," she said.

Graham moved to New York at 17.

"Of course I went through the struggles of learning how to be an adult," she said, "but it never affected my career because I was just very straightforward. Straightforward with what I wanted and my dreams and my goals and all of that."

She soon experienced her first major controversy.

"I was in the Lane Bryant commercial that was banned from television which was so cool," she said.

The 2010 commercial wasn't allowed to air on ABC during "Dancing With The Stars" or on FOX during "American Idol," CBS News reported.

Lane Bryant accused the networks of banning the ads because of the plus size women, especially considering the ubiquity of sexy Victoria's Secret ads which could air at the same time.

"It was a controversy [and] everybody thought, 'oh ... this is terrible,' but honestly, I thought it was great because it was giving us a platform to be able to talk about body image and acceptance. And media isn’t putting curvy women on ... newsstands and on television," she added.

"That was the whole thing," she said, "they were offended by my curves and lingerie."
