Judge Declares Director Barry Sonnenfeld Owes His Former Agency $325K For 'Men In Black 3"

Barry-Sonnenfeld

Director Barry Sonnenfeld owes his former agency, United Talent Agency (UTA), $325,000—its cut of his fee on his last film "Men in Black 3," reports The Hollywood Reporter.

Despite the fact that he left the agency, arbitration earlier this year determined Sonnenfeld owed UTA its share of his compensation for the film.

UTA brokered the deal for Sonnenfeld to direct the original "Men in Black" back in 1995 for a fee of $3.25 million, with UTA receiving a 10 percent commission. Sonnenfeld left the agency for Creative Artists Agency (CAA) shortly after.

When Sonnenfeld agreed to direct "Men in Black 2," CAA brokered him a $20 million fee, but he still had to pay UTA the same 10 percent of the original deal, $325,000.

With "Men in Black 3," U.S District Court Judge S. James Otero ordered Sonnenfeld again pay UTA 10 percent on $3.25 million of his $7 million directing fee.

Sonnenfeld argued that the deal brokered on "MiB3" was "from scratch" since Columbia Pictures looked into hiring other directors for the job, but back in March arbitrator Howard Weitzman determined Sonnenfeld still owed his former agency.

Despite Sonnenfeld's disagreement, Otero held up Weitzman's decision.

"Men in Black 3" stars Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, and Josh Brolin. The pic debuted over Memorial Day weekend and has since grossed over $621 million worldwide.

Former MTV VP Sues Network For Sexual Discrimination

$

Snooki Jersey SHore MTVFormer MTV VP Andrea Fair is suing her former employer, MTV, and parent company Viacom for sexual discrimination, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Fair is now demanding lost wages and compensatory damages.

Fair claims that the network "maintained a double standard and ignored inappropriate behavior but punished her," according to the suit.

Fair began her MTV career in 2005 as a senior director before being promoted to vice president of talent and music (TAM) in 2008. Fair claims that in 2009 she was appointed by MTV CEO Judy McGrath to be on MTV's Visionary Committee, which discusses the future of the network.

As TAM, she reported to Senior VP Bruce Gillmer, who she claims diminished her role, excluding her from meetings and allowing younger employees to attend events like the European Music Awards instead of her.

"In the days after Gillmer became her supervisor, it became clear to Fair that Gillmer was treating her differently because of her age and gender. On numerous occasions, Gillmer accused Fair of being 'too emotional,'" states the lawsuit.

In 2009, Gilmer hired Allison Farber, despite Fair's reservations, which soon led to problems. Fair claims Farber was difficult to manage, which Gillmer allegedly made worse with special treatment like trips to awards shows and a Rihanna video shoot.

In August 2010, Farber submitted a complaint against Fair for being "inappropriately aggressive and controlling," claiming she was afraid of her.

The network then fired Fair for a "pattern of inappropriate conduct."

In a statement to THR in response to the lawsuit MTV and Viacom said, “While we don’t comment on the specifics of pending litigation, we do not believe there is any merit to this claim and plan to defend against it vigorously.”

Madison Square Garden Profits Surge In The 4th Quarter Thanks To Jeremy Lin

jeremy lin of the new york knicks against the los angeles lakers

What NBA lockout? Madison Square Garden reported profits more than tripled in the fourth quarter thanks to Linsanity.

MSG reported a 245 percent increase from last year in net income at $28.6 million.

Revenues were up, too, with MSG reporting a 42 percent increase from last year, amounting to $332.9 million.

The numbers beat Wall Street estimates of $277 million

The company attributes the rise to an increase in television ratings and ticket sales after a skyrocketed interest in New York Knicks' basketball player earlier this year.

The Linsanity phenomenon led the team to seven back-to-back wins and MSG's stock price rose more than 10 percent in February after Lin's start on the team.

However, the Garden's cash cow was traded to the Houston Rockets in July

On total, MSG reported revenue of $1.3 billion for the full fiscal year of 2012 an eight percent rise from last year.

Despite the sporting venue being a success, the same can't be said for its entertainment department.

Entertainment revenues saw a ten percent decrease in revenue from the past year with $264 million. However, they were up 41 percent in the fourth quarter.

The venue hosts more than 300 events per year. Taylor Swift, One Direction, and Bruce Springsteen are among performers of the past year at the Garden.

MSG is currently working on a costly three-year renovation amounting to nearly $1 billion.

This Israeli Chocolate Ad Shows John Cleese Ordering An Air Strike On Iran

A new Israeli ad (above) portrays "Monty Python" alum John Cleese as a Western General who gives the IDF the go ahead to perform an air strike against an anonymous Middle Eastern enemy, presumably, Iran. Not quite what you'd expect from a commercial for a Nutella-esque chocolate-hazelnut spread.

"We need your approval of the attack," an Israeli in the war room says. "I promise you, we will be in and out in 33 minutes...we have the right to defend ourselves!"

A distracted Cleese then grabs a jar of HaSachar Haole's Sababa Egozim spread, messily licks the wrapper, and then announces a Hebrew phrase that the Jerusalem Post translates as "Great stuff" but what appears to be the company's official YouTube account translates as "Let's get nuts!" Generals high five; Cleese doesn't notice the residual chocolate smudge on his nose.

The Algemeiner reported that Cleese received $50,000 for the spot. Shot at Cleese's home in Monaco by Inbar, Merhav, Shaked Advertising agency, the ad apparently aimed "to convince Israeli parents that Hashahar Ha-oleh chocolate spread is really the most filling option for their growing children."

A separate Israeli ad for HOT, an Israeli cable company, created a stir in Iran last February. The spot showed four stars from a HOT series entering Iran, "near the nuclear reactor." ("Where will we find a Kosher kitchen here?" one asks). The men, dressed as Iranian women to fit in, meet up with a Mossad agent and admire his Samsung Galaxy tablet before accidentally pressing a button that sets off an explosion.

The explosion, which the New York Times characterized as "a clear reference to a string of deadly attacks on Iranian scientists and installations that have been attributed to Israel," is shrugged off.

"What? Another mysterious explosion in Iran."

An Iranian official suggested a country-wide ban on Samsung products, although the tech company told All Things D, "This advertisement was produced by HOT cable network without Samsung’s knowledge or participation.”

Why 'The Sun' Is Publishing Nude Photos Of Prince Harry, Despite The Palace's Pleas

A request from the royal family didn't stop Britain's The Sun from publishing a nude Prince Harry on its cover today.

Friday's copy of the British paper reads, "Heir It Is! Pic of naked Harry you've already seen on the Internet."

Earlier this week, the prince was photographed naked while partying with friends in Las Vegas. Soon after, the Royal Family asked the media to refrain from publishing the photos of the prince claiming an invasion of privacy.

However, The Sun also published a video on its site defending its decision to run the photos, with managing editor David Dinsmore saying the paper published the photos to create an important conversation for its readers:

"For us, this is about the freedom of the press," says Dinsmore. "This is about the ludicrous situation where a picture can be seen by hundreds of millions of people around the world on the Internet, but can't be seen in the nation's favorite paper, read by eight million people every day."

Director Martin Scorsese has responded to the lawsuit filed against him regarding not making a film he supposedly promised to do, calling it "absurd," reports The Wrap.

On Wednesday, Cecchi Gori Pictures sued the director and his production company for not directing an adaptation of the novel "Silence," which he allegedly said he would do following the filming of 2011's "Hugo."

Scorsese released a statement on Friday:

It is shocking to us that the lawyers for Cecchi Gori Pictures would file a suit pursuing such absurd claims considering the amicable working relationship existing between Martin Scorsese and the principals of Cecchi Gori Pictures. The claims asserted are completely contradicted by, inconsistent with, and contrary to the express terms of an agreement entered into by the parties last year.

The lawsuit was filed on the eve of Mr. Scorsese starting another picture [The Wolf of Wall Street] has all the earmarks of a media stunt.

Mr. Scorsese is confident that he will prevail in court should Cecchi Gori Pictures actually pursue this meritless action.

Here's How Celebs Are Sneakily Promoting Products And You Don't Even Realize It

Lauren Conrad

Former entertainment lawyer and Lindsay Lohan manager Michael Heller is changing the way celebrities promote products with his New York based company, Talent Resources, a global strategic marketing firm.

Instead of obvious celebrity campaigns, Heller uses celebrities to stealthily draw attention to companies by posting photos to their social networks.

"The wave of the future is putting brands with celebs on smaller activation, but not marrying them to the brand long term," Heller explained to The Hollywood Reporter, adding: "We're finding ways that don't necessarily make the celebrity a full endorser for the company. Instead, they are ambassadors for the company organically and quietly."

Here are a few recent celeb and company collaborations we bet you didn't realize were set ups:

  • Robert Pattinson smoking an electronic cigarette at the New York premiere of "Cosmopolis." "I personally gave Robert Pattinson those electronic cigarettes at the wedding of my friend," Heller told THR. "It was before he and Kristen Stewart broke up. I gave it to both of them."
  • "At a recent event for Dancing With the Stars' Derek Hough," Heller explains to THR, "Hough was picked up in a Kia car, tweeted about the car, thanked Kia and was seen using the car. TR [Talent Resources, Heller's company] then took all of the images and sent them to several platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and blogs."
  • Talent Resources rents a beachfront home in Malibu for two months during the summer where they throw parties, brand-sponsored events, charity functions and private dinners. According to THR, "This year's eclectic mix of Malibu events included Ashley Tisdale's birthday party, a Taylor Armstrong charity event and a joint birthday bash for Minnie Driver and Kathleen Robertson's sons in July, then a Hello Giggles Party with Zooey Deschanel, a birthday party for Diana Ross' son and a Dancing With the Stars cast BBQ in August."
  • During an event at Talent Resource's Malibu summer house, Adam Levine's new musical protegé Rozzi Crane brought John Mayer and Lauren Conrad along for her listening party at the party property. Unsolicited, Conrad took a picture with a life-size cutout of the Kia Motors Hamster and posted it on Instagram. Heller's team sent it out to the web, and the photo had more than 38,000 views within 24 hours. Plus, said Heller, "This shows you the power of celebrity. She took picture with her iPhone. I didn't ask her to. She's doing my job at my event. It’s amazing."

Heller was personally behind each of these product placements. [We reached out to Talent Resources asking the financial breakdown of the deals, but our requests for comment have not yet been returned.]

Robert PattinsonIn September, Heller will lead Talent Resources into New York Fashion Week with a Modelina gifting suite and Style 360 Fashion Show featuring lines from Avril Lavigne and the Kardashians.

He's also producing a few films on the side, including "Arbitrage" starring Susan Sarandon and Richard Gere and "Adult World" with Emma Roberts and John Cusack.

But Heller's main focus is running Talent resources, who presently do six key events during the year: The Malibu summer house, the Sundance Film Festival, the Super Bowl, Coachella, the Kentucky Derby, Fashion Week and a Labor Day polo match in the Hamptons.

"I love Talent Resources and what it does because I feel like I created this bridge that didn't exist," Heller explains to THR. There are 100 people making movies, but not many bridging celebrities with brands ... It gives us opportunities to expose talents and expose brands in cool, organic way."

"I look at it as the new way of advertising because everything is going viral," adds Heller. "At the end of the day, we're getting the message out there just as well as any advertisement. If I have an event, 45,000 people are looking at it on Facebook now."

Jay-Z Drops Suit Over 40/40 Club Chef's Chicken Wing Recipe

On Wednesday, Jay-Z sued Mike Shand, the former chef of his 40/40 club, for $1.5 million and on Thursday, it was revealed the beef was over ... a chicken wing recipe.

Today, the New York Post is reporting that Jay-Z has dropped the suit. But all is still not well between the music mogul and his personal-turned-club chef.

Shand’s lawyer, Vik Pawar, confirmed to the Post that the club dropped the suit, but says that “We still may sue the club for defamation of character and for the return of his possessions, including his laptop, which the club still has.”

The original suit came after Shand refused to hand over his own special spice mix for chicken wings—despite giving up all other recipes—when departing the 40/40 club after Jay wasn't pleased with the chef's revamped club menu.

Apparently, Jay-Z prefers chicken wings over king crab sliders. Noted.

This Week In Movie Trailers: Rachel McAdams Shows Off 'Passion' For Brian De Palma And More

Rachel-McAdams, Noomie-Rapace

In this week's trailers, Rachel McAdams and Noomie Rapace play two competing corporate women doing anything to get ahead, while Nicolas Cage adds two new action pics to his resumé.

Plus, Jennifer Garner and Olivia Wilde play with butter, and a baseball documentary for die hard fans.

Also, a powerful trailer for a possible Oscar contender about one family's struggle for survival during the 2004 tsunami.

"Lawless" — August 29 (Red Band)

Sometimes a movie needs a red band trailer to show audiences how gritty it really is. This is one of those times.

The "Lawless" red band trailer provides the striking visuals and gritty violence that one would expect from the film, but have been unable to see in past advertising.  If you were hesitant about the Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy Prohibition pic, it may change your mind.

"Butter" — September 4

This movie is guaranteed to be the best butter-related low budget ensemble comedy with political undertones of the fall.

With a cast including Jennifer Garner, Ty Burrell, Olivia Wilde, Rob Cordry, and Hugh Jackman, this comedy is definitely worth checking out.

"Stolen" — September 14

The first Nicolas Cage film on this week's list co-stars Malin Akerman and a grunged-down Josh Lucas. With a $35 million budget, the film will have to rely on overseas grosses for any hope of breaking even.

The FBI Investigated Author Ray Bradbury For Communist Sympathies

$

0

Ray Bradbury

Ray Bradbury was investigated by the FBI during the 1950s, with government agents interviewing his peers and putting him under surveillance before concluding that despite being critical of the US government in his writing, the celebrated writer was never a member of the Communist party.

The 40-page cache of the late science fiction author's FBI files was obtained by the Daily Beast following a Freedom of Information request, and shows the extent to which the FBI had Bradbury in its sights in 1959. "Raymond Douglas Bradbury, a freelance science fiction, television and motion picture scenario writer … has been described as being critical of the United States Government," the FBI wrote on 8 June 1959, before laying out its issue with Bradbury's classic collection of short stories, The Martian Chronicles. The stories "were connected by the repeated theme that earthmen are despoilers and not developers", according to the FBI.

The FBI uncovered the information that "Bradbury has been extremely successful in the writing field". The bureau also discovered "that Bradbury, while a young man, sold papers and did miscellaneous small jobs", and that "in 1942 his writing were beginning to return him a descent [sic] livelihood".

A named source in the file, Martin A Berkeley, told the agents investigating Bradbury that the author "was probably sympathetic with certain pro-communist elements", and that during a discussion about whether Communist party members should be allowed to join the Screen Writers Guild, Bradbury "rose to his feet and shouted 'Cowards and McCarthyites' when the resolution was discussed".

Berkeley, a "self-admitted" former member of the Communist party, went on to tell the FBI "that science fiction may be a lucrative field for the introduction of communist ideologies", and that "some of Bradbury's stories have been definitely slanted against the United States and its capitalistic form of government".

Another informant agreed about the dangerous effects of science fiction, advising "that individuals such as Ray Bradbury are in a position to spread poison concerning political institutions in general and American institutions in particular", and that "Communists have found fertile opportunities for development; for spreading distrust and lack of confidence in America [sic] institutions in the area of science fiction writing". Even worse, "the general aim of these science fiction writers is to frighten the people into a state of paralysis or psychological incompetence bordering on hysteria which would make it very possible to conduct a Third World War which the American people would seriously believe could not be won since their morals had been seriously destroyed".

Bradbury did not help his own cause by taking out an advertisement in the Daily Variety in 1952, in which, according to the FBI documents, he wrote: "I have seen too much fear in a country that has no right to be afraid. I have seen too many campaigns in California, as well as in other states, won on the issue of fear itself, and not on the facts. I do not want to hear any more of this claptrap and nonsense from you. I will not welcome it from McCARTHY or McCARRAN, from Mr NIXON, DONALD JACKSON, or a man named SPARKMAN. I do not want any more lies, any more prejudice, any more smears. I do not want intimations, hearsay or rumour. I do not want unsigned letters or nameless telephone calls from either side, or from anyone."

Despite this, the FBI concluded in 1959 that "no evidences have been developed which indicate he was ever a member of the [ party]".

In 1968, however, it was investigating Bradbury again, looking into a potential trip by Bradbury to the Cultural Congress of Havana in Cuba, the purpose of which was "to obtain unity of action in the anti-imperialist fight". There appeared to be some confusion over the tip received by the federal agency, however: the named individual was one "Roy Bradbury", and after investigating Bradbury's passport file and lacking evidence that he had applied for or travelled to Cuba, it dropped the investigation, deciding not to interview the author. "Due to Bradbury's background as a known liberal writer, vocal in anti-United States war policies, an interview with Bradbury would be deemed unadvisable," an agent wrote.

Sam Weller, Bradbury's biographer, describes the FBI investigation in his book The Bradbury Chronicles. "I remember distinctly his response when I visited him and presented him with the files," Weller told The Daily Beast. "He beamed ear to ear and dismissed it with a wave of his hand and laughed and he said, 'I'll be damned, I've had nothing to hide over the years – what are they going to investigate? What a bore.'"

Here Are Fall TV's Biggest Potential Moneymakers

666 park ave

Doctor dramas, film stars, and a plate of new comedies fill this year's fall schedule.

Networks hope to get a ratings boost from the likes of film stars Lucy LiuDennis Quaid and Ellen Barkin after last year's successful transition of actress Zooey Deschanel to the small screen.

Other networks are banking on the return of popular actors Hayden PanetierreTerry O'Quinn, and Matthew Perry to primetime.

We've taken a look at the most buzzed about shows across social venues Facebook, Twitter, and TVGuide.com, plus watched a few of the early releases to predict the fall's biggest wins and losses.

From comical flubs to action thrillers, here are the biggest bets for the fall and the shows that missed the mark.

Winner: "Chicago Fire"

Network: NBC
Premiere Date: October 10
Facebook: 29,389 likes
Twitter: 2,292 followers

Though NBC's fire fighter drama didn't make it into the top ten most popular fall shows on Facebook, we were told Chicago Fire is tracking well with TV Guide, and believe with all the medical shows, cop dramas, and reality series in the mix, audiences could use something different.

We also put our trust in writers Derek Haas and Michael Brandt since they've previously worked together on successful projects "Wanted," "2 Fast 2 Furious," and "3:10 to Yuma."

Overrated: "The New Normal"

Network: NBC
Premiere Date: September 11
Facebook: 39,496 likes / 12,460 talking
Twitter: 3,926 followers

NBC's publicly-criticized show focusing on two gay partners looking for a surrogate has received a flurry of buzz, making it one of the network's biggest bets for the fall.

The network revealed it's answer to ABC's "Modern Family" online today with an early look at the pilot. After watching, we're pretty sure ABC execs can breathe a sigh of relief.

If the rest of the show is anything like the first, it's overshrouded by too many strong competing voices–an outspoken gay couple (Justin Bartha and Andrew Rannells), a bigoted grandmother (Ellen Barkin), and never shy NeNe of "The Real Housewives of Atlanta.

Ultimately, the bickering among the four may detract viewers in the long run from the show and its bigger picture about an extended family replacing the nuclear family.

Winner: "Arrow"

Network: CW
Premiere Date: October 10
Facebook: 31,341 likes / 4143 talking
Twitter: no real twitter handle; however @GreenArrowTV, following news for the show has 2,075 followers.

Between the popularity of "The Hunger Games" and superheroes at the moment, the show based on comic character Green Arrow has the makings to bring in viewer interest.

The show seems an unlikely ratings winner; however, we – and many others – thought the same of NBC's "Grimm" fairytale show last fall. This will either be a surprise gem or will crumble as quickly as the failed "Birds of Prey" Batman spinoff.

Clint Eastwood Pretended Obama Was A Chair In The Most Bizarre, Incredible Speech Of The Convention

Clint Eastwood

Clint Eastwood recently gave a speech at the Republican National Convention that won't soon be forgotten.

It was bizarre, strange and somewhat incredible all in one.

It included him talking to an empty chair and saying the famous "Dirty Harry" line: "Go ahead, make my day."

Eastwood was the "mystery speaker" that Mitt Romney brought on to speak at the convention, and he did not disappoint. His speech was utterly mystifying.

At one point in the speech, Eastwood did a back-and-forth with the chair, introducing it as President Obama.

"I've got Mr. Obama here," he said.

"There are 23 million unemployed people in this nation," he said, scolding the chair. "That is something to cry for. That is a disgrace, a national disgrace."

Later in his routine with the chair, he pretended that the chair was telling him to shut up.

“I’m not going to shut up, it’s my turn," Eastwood said.

The mystifying moment has already led to a Twitter account (@InvisibleObama) that, as of 12:10 a.m. ET, has almost 30,000 followers. The Obama campaign has also responded via Twitter.

Later in the speech, Eastwood hit Obama on his term as president.

"We own this country," Eastwood said. That led to a standing ovation.

"Politicians are our employees. When someone doesn't do the job, we have to let them go," Eastwood said, inspiring a raucous ovation.

Eastwood certainly rambled on a bit, ad-libbing through his entire speech without a teleprompter. It was a particularly unscripted address in an otherwise highly scripted event of a convention.

Eastwood ended with his famous line.

"I'll start it, you finish it," he told the crowd, egging them on. "Go ahead..."

"Make my day!" the crowd answered.

Watch Clint Eastwood make the crowd's day below:

stan lee the avengers

Earlier this week, we received a look at a deleted opening sequence from "The Avengers."

Now, we're getting a look at another scene featuring Captain America's alter ego, Steve Rogers where our superhero reflects over a second lease on life.

We get why the somber clip was removed from the film – too much attention on Roger's missed years bogs down an otherwise upbeat film. (It's as if we're watching a singular "Captain America" sequel rather than an "Avengers" movie.)

However, what makes this worthwhile is a hilarious cameo by Stan Lee.

Spot him at the 2:30 mark below.

The DVD goes on sale September 25.
