This is the 'Fallout 4' video fans have been waiting months to see

0
0

One of 2015's most anticipated games is "Fallout 4."

It's been years since we last set foot in "the wasteland," first showcased in Bethesda Softworks' 2008 opus, "Fallout 3." Sure, there were previous, highly enjoyable games in the franchise, but Bethesda's version of the "Fallout" universe in "Fallout 3" was far more compelling than previous entries. It was also much easier.

"Fallout 4" looks to be even better, as showcased in the lengthy gameplay video above. You can play it for yourself this November 10 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.

Produced By Ben Gilbert. Video courtesy of Bethesda Softworks.

We finally have a good idea of what the next 'X-Men' movie will be about

entertainment weekly x men apocalypse.PNG

The next installment in the "X-Men" franchise isn't out until next May.

While we've seen some photos teased from the upcoming film, we haven't known much about the film until now.

Entertainment Weekly's latest issue has a first look at "X-Men: Apocalypse," and dives into what we can expect from the mutants next summer.

According to EW, the film will take place 10 years after "Days of Future Past" in 1983. Since Wolverine changed the course of history in the last film, we're now dealing with an entirely alternate timeline for the X-Men.

That may have unleashed something much worse.

As teased at the end of "X-Men: Days of Future Past," the film will revolve around a 5,000-year-old Egyptian mutant named Apocalypse who is believed to be the first mutant.

We've mentioned this before, but Apocalypse is known for leading a team called the Horsemen of the Apocalypse which has consisted of a rotating group of four mutants over the years. The big secret was that we didn't know which four mutants would be working with Apocalypse in the next X-Men film, and now we finally do. Apocalypse will have a young Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Angel (Ben Hardy), Psylocke (Olivia Munn), and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) at his side.

In "Apocalypse," the ancient mutant is after Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) to join his ranks and to help destroy the world.

Unsurprisingly, Xavier isn't down to down to join the dark side.

Via EW:

As Apocalypse opens, 10 years have passed and Raven, Charles, and Erik are still estranged, but not for much longer. The Big A [Apocalypse] awakens from his Egyptian tomb, sizes up the global '80s vibe, and decides he's not down with the Reagan era ...

He finds teenage Storm living on the streets in Cairo, Angel duking it out in a fight club in Berlin, and Psylocke working behind the Iron Curtain for the mutant-broker Caliban. But his big get is Erik, who has been attempting to live a "normal" life in Poland.

EW reports Jennifer Lawrence's character Raven (aka Mystique) will hear about Magneto working with Apocalypse and will team up with Charles to put a stop to the Horsemen in a big mutant fight before they can destroy the world.

We'll see a bunch of other mutants including a young Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) and Jean Grey (played by "Game of Thrones" actress Sophie Turner), too.

You can check out a preview to the EW article here.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" is in theaters May 27, 2016.

'True Detective' is not a good show

0

vince vaughn true detective

Warning: There are spoilers ahead if you're not caught up with "True Detective."

Are things finally picking up on "True Detective?"

The fourth episode of the turgid HBO drama ended with a stunning shootout that seemed to signal a sea change for the series. And yes, while last night's episode, "Other Lives," kind of got things moving with a time jump and a vague sense of purpose, there still really isn't much to recommend in the way of quality.

"True Detective" is simply not a good show.

Of course, that's a subjective statement, but it's one made after five weeks of earnestly hoping that "True Detective" would come together, coming from someone who really liked the first season. After five weeks of following vague developments in the nonsensically elaborate story about the corrupt municipality of Vinci, California, it's probably time to close the book on season 2.

Even if the final three episodes (and we only have three left in this story, which is over for good when this season's up) end up being incredible, "True Detective" is still a television show, and television shows are judged by how much their individual episodes are worth watching, not how much their finales are worth the slog.

I'm not even sure what "True Detective" as a series is definitively about, other than just how hard it is to be a man, specifically a white one. It's so hard, says "True Detective." Don't believe it? Look at all the scowling! In the world of "True Detective," everyone is always trying to undermine your manliness. Observe:true detective vince vaughnFrank Semyon (Vince Vaughn) is in danger of losing his money and his imagined dynasty — literally the only significant plot beat his wife Jordan (Kelly Reilly) is given involves a brief bit of jealousy over an associate's advances and her infertility, and they're both played for how much this hurts Frank. true detective taylor kitschWar hero Paul Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch) is a man of action — he got hooked on adrenaline at war, and now resorts to high-speed motorcycling at night with the lights off to get his kicks in civilian life. This is all super manly stuff — the speed, the danger, the action, the fact that he's played by Taylor freaking Kitsch — but there's a problem. Woodrugh is gay. He hates this about himself, because he wants to be a man — and even gets a woman pregnant and asks her to marry him in order to cover it up, even though he clearly is not into being intimate with her. But he has this clear picture of what he's supposed to be, and he's sticking to it.truedetective season 2 Lacey TerrellBurnout cop Ray Velcoro probably has the most tangible threat to his masculinity — his ex-wife was raped, and the paternity of his son isn't certain. Velcoro hates this, but doesn't want to find out that he's not his son's father. This is probably the clearest plot thread of the bunch, giving us one of the few big moment's of the fifth, most recent episode — Velcoro finds out that his wife's rapist has been apprehended, and that his wife might now know the truth about their son's paternity. (This is also a big moment because it reveals that Frank tipped Ray off to — and had him murder — an innocent man when they first crossed paths years ago.)rachel mcadams true detectiveExisting as a counterpoint to all this is Ani Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams), who exhibits a litany of traditionally masculine traits: She drinks and gambles hard, doesn't do commitment, is into porn and weird sex, and even balks at smoking her trademark e-cigarette once Ray compares it to oral sex with a robot. "True Detective" seems like it wants to make some kind of point about sexism with her character — she's punished for fraternizing with a male coworker who doesn't even get a slap on the wrist — but also seems blind to its own sexist attitudes, like the way it seems incapable of developing Bezzerides' character in ways that don't relate to her sexuality.

The fact that I could barely remember the actual character's names when writing this speaks to how unbearably dull this all is.

What makes it worse is that this is all a retread. Putting aside its Southern Gothic aesthetic, season one of "True Detective" was also preoccupied with similar ideas about masculinity, and they were about as tired then as they are now. The only notable difference in its attitudes was the way it tended to veer to more outward extensions of masculinity — particularly with Marty Hart's (Woody Harrelson) overreaching paternal attitude towards every younger woman he came across.true detective woody harrelsonIn fact, just about everything wrong with season two is there in season one: The overwrought, pretentious dialogue, the self-serious tone, and the slow pace. Presumably, this is due to the show's only constant: Creator Nic Pizzolatto, who writes every episode.

As season two plods along, it seems more and more like the things that made the first season better were the work of the talented people Pizzolatto collaborated with — virtuoso directing from Cary Fukunaga, stellar performances from the cast, the novelty of its setting, and creepy texture added by referencing a fascinating work of weird fiction.

At its core, though, "True Detective" is just as lumbering and dull as it has always been, and we should've known all along.

I mean, it's called "True Detective."

What a silly title.

Michael Peña gives details on the new ‘CHiPs’ movie — and it sounds amazing

Michael Pena

While promoting this latest movie, “Ant-Man,” Michael Peña was also excited to talk about the role he’s currently preparing for — legendary TV character Frank “Ponch” Poncherello from the late 1970s series, “CHiPs.

The show, which followed Ponch and his partner Jon Baker (Larry Wilcox) on their daily lives as motorcycle officers of the California Highway Patrol, is the latest TV show to be rebooted into a feature film.

But according to Peña, don’t expect many similarities.

“Basically it’s based on the TV show, but is doesn’t really borrow too much from it,” Peña told BI.

The script, written by Dax Shepard (“Parenthood”), got the greenlight at Warner Bros. a month ago, according to Peña, and they are currently rehearsing.

Dax Shepard Jason Kempin“It’s more like a 'Lethal Weapon' kind of movie, said Peña. “It’s not going to be funny.”

Unlike the recent string of TV shows made into movies, like the "21 Jump Street" franchise, Peña said the intention with “CHiPs” is to be more serious in the hopes to make the audience care and be concerned about what the characters are going through.

“We want people to really be interested in the plot,” he explains. “Some movies can be so jokey that you don’t really care about the nemesis and the plot just thins out. We’re making the humor as real as possible.”

The “CHiPs” TV show made the actor who played Ponch, Erik Estrada, into an international sex symbol and Peña is well aware. He said that after he’s through promoting “Ant-Man” he’s going to “lose the paunch to play Ponch.”

chipsShepard, along with writing the screenplay, will also play Ponch’s partner Jon Baker and direct the film. Vincent D’Onofrio is also attached to the project, according to IMDb.

The interesting way AMC's 'Humans' taught its cast to realistically act like robots

humans will tudor william hurt

One of the things that stands out on AMC's "Humans" is the unique and believable way the robots, or synths as they're called on the series, move.

Producers didn't leave that very important aspect of the show's robots to chance. It held a Synth School.

"From the outset we wanted to make the Synths as close to humans as possible, not jerky or robotic," executive producer Derek Wax told Business Insider. "This is part of the design, obviously, so that Synths can deceive humans and fake that they are human."

Synth School was taught by choreographer and movement director Dan O'Neill, who taught all the actors and extras playing synths. More than 100 extras, 20 at a time, attended the classes. O'Neill, who collaborated with theater company Frantic Assembly on developing the synth movement, studied aspects of martial arts practice Tai Chi, and the grace and economy of movements in a humans synths amcJapanese tea ritual, as well.

Synth movement is based on three major principles: The movement had to be economical, as Synths would want to conserve battery energy; they should be graceful, because humans should desire it for its beautiful design (like an iPhone), and their movements should show purpose, because every task would've already been planned from start to finish in the synth's processor.

"We didn't want their movements too comical or boxy," O'Neill told BI. "We started out with workshops at Frantic Assembly where we thought about the way they would move and why they would move. We also thought about what would make humans more comfortable around them, so we thought about letting them blink every so often, something humans would do."

"They would not be making extraneous movements in the way that human beings twitch and jerk and wave their arms around when they’re talking and use all sorts of useless movements," said Wax.

Humans airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.

A guest role on 'The X-Files' helped Bryan Cranston get his Emmy-winning role on 'Breaking Bad'

Breaking Bad Bryan Cranston

It almost seemed like fate that "Breaking Bad" creator Vince Gilligan and star Bryan Cranston teamed up to create one of the greatest dramas in television history.

Long before he starred as Walter White (a.k.a. Heisenberg) on "Breaking Bad," Bryan Cranston was already making a name for himself as one of the finest actors working in television.

Breaking Bad

Meanwhile, during the 1990s, Vince Gilligan was an up-and-coming writer working on "The X-Files."

During an interview on WTF with Marc Maron, Gilligan discussed how the two first met thanks to Fox's extremely popular sci-fi drama.

Gilligan wrote the sixth season episode "Drive," in which Bryan Cranston starred as a man on the run from the law.

"I had this part written where Agent Mulder had to be stuck in this car with this crazy guy who's threatening to kill him. And the part was tricky because he needed to be this real scary, badass guy but at the end of the hour, you had to feel sorry for him when he died," Gilligan told Maron. "And we had all these scary actors come in who could pull off the scary but they couldn't pull off the human part where you felt bad for him until ... and we were scared we were nervous because it was only a few days before it was gonna start shooting ... and this guy Bryan Cranston walks in and there was this weight lifted off of him as soon as he read because he was so good. This was like '99. And as soon as he walked out the door I said 'Off to wardrobe.'"

Bryan Cranston X Files

Gilligan's experience with Cranston was clearly special and unique. While it didn't directly inspire the idea for "Breaking Bad," that scene did keep Cranston on Gilligan's mind.

"I never forgot him," Gilligan continued. "He was wonderful in this role. And I said even as the shoot was progressing for that episode ... and you've gotta understand we worked with a lot of great actors on 'X-Files,' but I never had that eureka experience of saying, 'I wanna work with this guy again in the future.'"

A while later, Gilligan re-discovered Cranston thanks to ads for a new show.

"And a year and a half later, after this episode airs, I'm seeing commercials on Fox for this new show called 'Malcolm in the Middle.' And I see this clean-shaven guy I didn't recognize and I'm like, 'That guy looks familiar.' And then I realized, oh my God! That's the guy from my 'Drive' episode of 'X-Files.' And I watched it and I swear my first reaction was 'I didn't know he could be funny!' Because all I knew him as was this dramatic guy ... this really intense dramatic guy." Gilligan said.

Given that "Breaking Bad," especially in the early episodes, contained a unique balance of humor and drama, this could be a reason Gilligan thought he would be a good fit for his show. With the success of "Malcolm in the Middle," as well as his memorable stint as Dr. Tim Whatley on "Seinfeld," he became a comedy actor. Once Gilligan put him in "Breaking Bad," he went back to being known for dramas.

Malcolm in the Middle Bryan Cranston

It turns out, when Gilligan first pitched "Breaking Bad" to AMC with Cranston as the star, the executives were surprised by this choice.

"There was only one actor, as far as I was concerned," recalled Gilligan. "The folks from AMC ... all they knew him from was 'Malcolm in the Middle.' And they said, 'Seriously?' And to their credit, once I showed them this 'X-Files' episode they had the opposite take on him than I had. They said, 'Wait ... this guy can be serious? He can be dramatic? I thought he could be funny.'"

Cranston has proven over and over how versatile of an actor he can be.

"He's the whole package. He could do it all." Gilligan said.

Taylor Swift is siding with Alibaba's greatest rival

Taylor Swift is planning to expand her empire to China.

The Grammy-winning singer will release a clothing line with JD.com, the second-largest e-commerce company in China, according to Jennifer Kaplan at Bloomberg News

The line will include "dresses, sweatshirts, and other tops."

JD hopes the deal with Swift will help it take market share from e-commerce giant Alibaba.

Swift will be touring in China later this year.

The singer has a shoe line through American company Keds.

She also sells clothing on her official website.

The singer also opened and closed last year's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, where she walked among the models.

Swift also has serious sway over her fan base.

When Abercrombie & Fitch released a shirt that said "more boyfriends than t.s.," fans protested until it was pulled from shelves. An independent shirt company designed a garment listing her love interests, and promptly received death threats.

Meanwhile, Victoria's Secret is the first big clothing brand to harness Swift's power for good. By hiring Swift to perform and treating her with utmost respect, the brand won the approval of the so-called Swifties.

JD.com will likely reap big benefits from working with Swift.

Amy Schumer says these are the biggest differences between how male and female comics are treated

0
0

amy schumer gq

In a new interview for her controversial GQ cover story, comedian Amy Schumer opened up about the challenges female comics face in today's industry.

Speaking from her own experience of working the stand-up circuit for years, the "Trainwreck" star explained how comedy audiences tend to subject female comedians to an unfair level of scrutiny.

"I've opened for male comics for years and see the difference in the treatment. It's the expectation of how a woman is going to be, or should be: Be sweet and likable and apologize for stealing oxygen from the world," Schumer said. "Just be a pleasure and service whatever the experience is. And it's 'What a c--- — did you just hear her ask for that thing she's supposed to have?'"

She continued: "All I've ever wanted is to be treated like a comedian who's performing at your venue, who sold it out. Just talk to me how you would talk to Bill Burr, who was here the week before me. Like Patton Oswalt, who'll be here next week."

Compared to male comedians, Schumer feels there's an additional pressure for women in comedy to look attractive.

"[Being a female comic is] exhausting. I'm very annoyed by all the physical stuff — the heels, the makeup, outfits, versus my male counterparts who are rolling out of bed," Schumer said.

TrainwreckWhile she senses that the tides are turning in terms of how female comics are represented in the media, Schumer is still pessimistic about the treatment that women tend to recieve once they've reached the top of their respective industries.

"Women are accomplishing more and more, and men are plateauing, so there are these insane expectations of how you'll be," Schumer said. "You really are kind of encouraged to accomplish everything, and then you get to realize, 'But not too much—make everybody comfortable.'"

Schumer said her personal consequences of being a female comic have made for "a couple broken relationships" — adding, solemnly, "If you look at most female comedians doing well, they're alone."

When the interviewer asked if she's ever wished she were a man, however, Schumer responded vehemently, with a laugh:

"No," she said. "That's disgusting."

Why 'GIF' should be pronounced 'giff' and not 'jiff'

Two years ago, Steve Wilhite, the inventor of the GIF, a file format that shows moving images that's all the rage with kids these days, told The New York Times that everyone was pronouncing his creation wrong.

"The Oxford English Dictionary accepts both pronunciations ... They are wrong. It is a soft 'G,' pronounced 'jif.' End of story."

Sorry, Mr. Wilhite, but that's not the end of the story.

Many people still pronounce "GIF" as "giff," not "jiff," despite Wilhite's unequivocal statement to the contrary.

And if you need a good defense on why you shouldn't pronounce GIF like "jiff," check out this clip from Hello Generic, a sketch comedy group based in Connecticut.

We've embedded the relevant part of the video in a GIF, to be proper about it.

A 'Breaking Bad' actor is running for county commissioner in a heated local race

0

Steven Michael Quezada

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Citing sprawl development and a need for more Mexican-American elected officials, "Breaking Bad" actor Steven Michael Quezada said he is jumping in a heated race for county commissioner in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Quezada, who played DEA agent Steven Gomez in the hit AMC-TV series, told The Associated Press on Monday that he will make a formal announcement on Tuesday that he's seeking the Bernalillo County Commission seat.

The 52-year-old actor and comedian said he's joining in the race because he feels someone like him can make a difference in the district which includes the historic Hispanic South Valley and an area in Albuquerque's Westside where developers are seeking to build new homes.

"I think I bring a new face to the Democratic Party," said Quezada, a Democrat who is a member of the Albuquerque school board. "We need to reach out to our young people — the young Chicanos, the young Latinos — and get them involved in this process and let them know this is important."

At least three others are running for the open seat in 2016.

The Bernalillo County Commission recently voted to approve a planned community despite activists' fears the development would take water away from nearby communities. Concern of the development brought protests from South Valley farmers at commissioners' meetings.

The master plan for a nearly 22-square-mile development known as Santolina would rival some of the state's largest cities once completed in 50 years, and it comes during a period of heightened concerns over water following years of severe drought.

breaking bad

Quezada, who voted against the plan as a member of the Albuquerque Public Schools, said the plan lacked the needed schools at a time when the area is seeing school overcrowding.

Quezada is getting active in New Mexico Democratic Party politics just as the party is licking its wounds from a historic defeat in 2014 with the re-election of Republican Gov. Susana Martinez and the GOP takeover of the New Mexico House. Other Democrats have sought Quezada's support and he has lent his voice for commercials.

But Quezada said the state party needed to go more to reach out to Latino voters, especially since New Mexico has the highest percentage of Hispanic residents in the county.

Javier Benavidez, executive director of the SouthWest Organizing Project, a group that opposed Santolina, said he was happy that Quezada and others were jumping in the commissioners' race.

"We are seeing the consequences of irresponsible development," Benavidez said. "We need leaders who are going to commit to responsible growth and not just recruit new Wal-Marts and chain restaurants."

"Breaking Bad" follows former high school teacher Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston, producing methamphetamine with a former student, Jesse Pinkman, played by Aaron Paul.

Cast of HBO series 'The Wire' went to Baltimore to reenact scenes from Freddie Gray protests

the wire 3

This weekend, cast members of the beloved HBO television series "The Wire" voiced the words of Baltimore's poorest and most disenfranchised residents during "Wired Up," an event aimed to celebrate the "unsung heroes' of Baltimore - those who serve inside and amongst the community, tirelessly and selflessly," according to the events website

Among those in attendance were Michael K. Williams (Omar Little on The Wire), Sonja Sohn (Shakima Greggs), Andre Royo ("Bubbles" Cousins) and Larry Gilliard Jr., (D'Angelo Barksdale), according to the Baltimore Sun. Actors Dominic West (Jimmy McNulty) and Wendell Pierce (Bunk Moreland) and show creator David Simon also submitted taped messages.

Others in attendance included actress Felicia Pearson (Snoop), Tristan Wilds (Michael Lee), Seth Gilliam (Raymond Carver), Chad L. Coleman (Dennis "Cutty" Wise), Jamie Hector (Marlo Stanfield), Gbenga Akinnagbe (Chris Partlow), Dierdre Lovejoy (Rhonda Pearlman), Anwan Glover (Slim Charles), Tray Chaney (Malik "Poot" Carr), and Maria Broom (Marla Daniels).

Each cast member took turns reciting monologues of stories told to them by members of Baltimore's Sandtown-Winchester community about the April 27 protests over the murder of Freddie Gray  a young black man who died in police custody  to a crowd of some 1000 people at the Modell Performing Arts Center in Baltimore, the Sun reported.

"We can't wait for more people to die," former cast member Sonja Sohn told the audience, according to The Sun. "We can't wait for any more black men to die at the hands of police officers who were acting irresponsibly."

"That's why we put this event together. We're actors, and what we can do is to build a platform to raise voices that need to be heard."

Michael K. Williams, who played Omar Little on the Wire, a drug dealer with a strict moral code, gave an impassioned speech to the crowd:

Other photos showed cast members coming together for the first time since the show ended in 2008.

Gray's stepfather Richard Shipley also spoke to the crowd, the Sun reported.

"The Gray family is so very proud of all the things shaking and moving in Baltimore," Shipley said. "I see people working, kids going to school, camps opening. I see a lot of progress being made in a short period of time. It's just a shame that a tragedy had to happen to get us up off our butts."

NBC is working on a 'Xena: Warrior Princess' reboot

xena warrior princess

Twenty years after it first premiered as a Hercules spinoff, Xena: Warrior Princess could be returning to television.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that NBC and NBC Universal International are prepping a reboot of the beloved Lucy Lawlessaction-adventure drama. The drama is in the extremely early development stages and a search for a writer is currently underway. Original executive producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi are also involved in the project, which is considered to be a "modern reboot." It's unclear what, if any, role original star Lawless would have, though sources tell THR that insiders would like the original star to have both a role on screen and behind the scenes. The drama is eyed for 2016. It's too early to know if Xena 2.0 would be a limited 13-episode run similar to Fox's revived 24 or a more standard full-season order. Insiders say the hope is for the new Xena to be an ongoing (read renewable) series.

See more Broadcast TV's New Shows 2015-16

Sources say the new Xena would have to have the charisma and charm of Lawless and the smarts of The Hunger Games' Katniss as producers are said to be looking for a sophisticated and smart superhero for a new generation.

The original series was produced by Studios USA and international producers Universal Worldwide Television and was distributed by Universal Television. Xena ran in syndication for six seasons from September 1995-June 2001 and originally started as a spinoff from Hercules after producers realized how popular the Xena (Lawless) character was and opted to launch a new series built around the Amazon warrior on a quest for redemption and her trusted companion Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor).

Xena was created by John Schulian and Tapert — Lawless' husband — and produced by Tapert, Sam Raimiand actor Bruce Campbell's Renaissance Pictures, Studios USA and Universal Television, the latter of whom distributed the series in more than 108 countries around the globe. The drama was a cult favorite and ratings hit, ranking in the top five syndicated programs during each of its six seasons.

An extension of the Xena franchise comes as Lawless recently signed on to co-star in Starz's Evil Dead sequelAsh vs. Evil Dead, reuniting her with Xena— and Spartacus — alums Raimi and Tapert.

For her part, Lawless recently told HitFix at Comic-Con— where she was supporting Ash — that "they've got to bring [Xena] back."

"I've been pitching that show … because … there's a swell of interest still," she said. "I'm always being peppered with questions [about] when the Xena movie is coming. Guys, I'm pitching my ass off to make it happen, whether it's with me or not. I think it'd be funny to have a reboot like Ash vs. Evil Dead— like middle-aged Xena in a muumuu with a bad attitude and a smoking habit. … Bring [actor] Ted Raimi [who played Joxer] in … [and maybe] Bruce Campbell."

See more Broadcast TV's Returning Shows 2015-16

"I don't know what the hold-up is; it's about who has got the rights," she added. "But that's a piss-poor excuse anymore. Find who has got the rights, freakin' pay it. It's better to have 80 percent of something than 100 percent of nothing. Don't waste this opportunity; reinvigorate that franchise!" she said, stressing the show's international appeal. It's an insane international character. They're fools not to bring it back. It's funny, it's sexy, it's action."

The actress also has been vocal about wanting to play the character again— despite the fact that Xena (spoiler alert) died in the series finale.

For NBC, a Xena reboot could give the network a perfect companion for fellow genre player Grimm on Fridays. The network in recent years has attempted to launch several shows on Fridays at 9 p.m. after Grimm Constantine, Crossbones, Dracula — none of which have made it to a second season.

Revisiting Xena comes as reboots continue to be in high demand as broadcast and cable networks alike look to proven commodities (and fan bases) to cut through the clutter in an increasingly competitive scripted landscape. Key to their success is having the original producers involved. For its part, NBC is also readying aCoach follow-up with star Craig T. Nelson. Fox, meanwhile, is bringing The X-Files back in January and has plans to produce another run of Prison Break after successfully reviving 24 on top of its film-to-TV take onMinority Report. Over at CBS, the network will launch a TV remake of Limitless with Bradley Cooper attached and will bow its Rush Hour adaptation come midseason.

Cosby's decade-old testimony could be used to crush him in court

0
0

Bill Cosby

Bill Cosby's lurid, decade-old testimony about his philandering could do more than damage what's left of his fatherly image — it could very well be used against him in court by some of the women who accuse him of sexual assault.

Rocco Cipparone, a defense lawyer in New Jersey who is not connected to any of the legal action surrounding Cosby, said Monday that what the comedian said under oath could wind up hurting him in civil or criminal cases if judges can be persuaded to rule the testimony admissible.

For Cosby to avoid being damaged by his own words, Cipparone said, "you'd have to navigate a virtual minefield."

Dozens of women have accused Cosby of drugging and sexually assaulting them over four decades, though few of the accusations have begun to play out in court, largely because the statute of limitations for criminal charges has run out in most instances.

Authorities have said one accusation is under criminal investigation in California, and three others are part of a defamation lawsuit against Cosby in Massachusetts by women who say they were slandered by his representatives.

Cosby has denied committing any crimes.

Earlier this month, a judge sided with The Associated Press and released small excerpts from a deposition Cosby gave in Philadelphia in 2005-06 as part of a sexual-assault lawsuit against him that was later settled on confidential terms.

Over the weekend, The New York Times published a more detailed account of Cosby's testimony after obtaining all 1,000 or so pages of his deposition via a court reporting service. The AP then secured the same material.

Cosby recounted some of his womanizing in sexually explicit detail and said he gave women quaaludes in order to have sex with them. He denied giving the powerful sedatives to women without their knowledge.

He specifically said that was the case back in the 1970s with Therese Serignese, one of the women now suing him in Massachusetts. A judge is weighing a request from Cosby to dismiss the case.

"I think it's a treasure trove of admissions by Mr. Cosby that self-destructs his public moralist soapbox," said Joseph Cammarata, the lawyer for Serignese and the two other plaintiffs.

Cammarata said that he expects to use Cosby's deposition in his clients' case if it goes to trial — and that it's strong evidence. "It's the equivalent of testifying in court," he said.Actor Bill Cosby speaks at the National Action Network's 20th annual Keepers of the Dream Awards gala in New York April 6, 2011. REUTERS/Lucas Jackson/Files

Celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred, who represents several woman who say Cosby assaulted them, said the testimony "demonstrates how deceptive, manipulative and disgusting that he was."

"It is no wonder that he fought to keep this deposition, which reveals his revolting predatory conduct, hidden from public view," she said, "but the truth is out now, and it will never be hidden again."

Cipparone said the women who are mentioned specifically in Cosby's testimony could use his words if they sue.

And even those not mentioned might be able to find ways to use his testimony to demonstrate that he has shown a pattern of behavior, especially if he opens the door by saying something now that contradicts his previous statements under oath.

Cosby's lawyer, Patrick O'Connor, told The Philadelphia Inquirer on Sunday that the publication of information from the transcripts is not fair to his client.

"How that deposition became public without being court-sanctioned is something we are going to pursue and deal with very vigorously," he said. "It's an outrage that the court processes weren't followed here."

Ian McKellen almost didn't star in the 'Lord of the Rings' or 'X-Men' movies because of 'Mission: Impossible'

0
0

Ian McKellen

The 2000s were a great decade for British actor Sir Ian McKellen. He led two huge blockbuster franchises. In "X-Men," he played archnemesis Magneto. Meanwhile, in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, he played ultimate good guy Gandalf.

It turns out he was very close to not getting either of those roles.

During this time, McKellen was also offered a role opposite Tom Cruise in "Mission: Impossible II."

X-Men Magneto

"I got offered a part in 'Mission: Impossible II' with Tom Cruise, but they wouldn’t let me see the whole script because I might have spilled the beans. I only got my scenes." McKellen told People Magazine.

However, McKellen didn't want to say yes to a project without knowing the whole story first.

"I couldn't judge from reading just those scenes what the script was like. So I said no. And my agent said, 'You cant say no to working with Tom Cruise!' and I said, 'I think I will.'" McKellen said.

According to McKellen, "X-Men" director Bryan Singer asked him to play Magneto the next day, to which he said yes. Not long after, director Peter Jackson asked Mckellen to play the wizard Gandalf.

Gandalf

McKellen's chance to play Gandalf was almost put in jeopardy, as filming for "X-Men" ran way over schedule. He made it to New Zealand just on time to film "The Fellowship of the Ring."

However, he never made it to "Mission: Impossible II." And maybe that was for the better.

"Meanwhile, 'Mission: Impossible' was put off, put off, put off," said McKellen. "If I had decided to do that, I wouldn’t have been in 'X-Men' and I wouldn't have been in 'Lord of the Rings.' It's all about luck – being there at the right time and ready for it."

Woody Allen says Amy Schumer is a funnier comedian than he is

0

woody allen amy schumer

Woody Allen wasn’t aware that Trainwreck, the Judd Apatow-directed movie starring Amy Schumer, references his 1979 movie Manhattan in a romantic montage. Schumer and co-star Bill Hader re-create the iconic scene where Allen and Diane Keaton are sitting on a bench underneath the 59th Street Bridge, when she says, "I think this is where Woody met Soon-Yi."

"I didn't know. This is the first time I'm hearing it," Allen told Vulture when we caught up with him at a screening for Irrational Man, hosted by the Cinema Society and Fiji Water.

That said, Allen is familiar with Schumer and says he's a fan of her work.

"You know, being a comedian myself, I have a tremendous admiration and respect for all these people," he said. "I used to think that, Oh, I was so great, and there's so many comedians, and they're second-rate. And then I watched them on cable television, and I thought, My God, I'm nowhere near as good as any of these people! I have a tremendous respect for all of them; it's amazing how good they are and how much better than I was all of them are, including her."

jurassic park in heels

“Jurassic World” may have surpassed the “Avengers” for the highest-grossing opening weekend ever, but viewers had one major problem with the new movie — Bryce Howard’s character Claire Dearing running from dinosaurs ... in heels.

The decision to keep Howard’s character in heels launched countless scathing editorials, a Tumblr dedicated to action heroines running in heels, and now a new satire video from XVP Comedy that puts every single living creature in the Jurassic Park franchise in heels.

“The #1 movie of the summer has the one thing that everyone’s been talking about: A woman running for her life from dinosaurs wearing high heels the whole time,” the announcer’s voice says, selling the fake and hilarious “Jurassic Park: Complete Box Set High Heels Edition.”

jurassic park high heels gif reimagined

Every scene in the video is edited to show the characters wearing heeled shoes accompanied by high heel clip-clopping sounds. They even put Jeff Goldblum’s Dr. Ian Malcolm character is a pair of bright red boots.

There’s also a much needed shot of all the characters throughout the movies falling in heels — something they would surely do if forced to run from dinosaurs in real life.

Even the dinosaurs got the high heels treatment. All the animals in Jurassic Park are females, we’re reminded, “And they look good!” booms the announcer.
