Top Gun Director Tony Scott Commits Suicide At 68

0

Tony Scott, the British film director behind Hollywood blockbusters including "Top Gun," has committed suicide at the age of 68 by jumping from a bridge.

He jumped from the Vincent Thomas Bridge over Los Angeles Harbour in California.

According to a coroner's report he was said to have left his car, climbed an 8ft fence, and then gone off the side of the suspension bridge into the water below.

Scott jumped at about 12.30pm on Sunday and his body was recovered by police and the US Coast Guard two hours later.

A note listing contact information was found inside his Toyota Prius. A suicide note was later found at his office. Its contents have not been revealed.

Lieutenant Joe Bale, of the Los Angeles Coroner's office, said there was no immediate evidence that Scott's death was anything other than a suicide. He said an autopsy had not yet been performed.

The bridge, is 185ft (56 meters) above the water and connects the port district of San Pedro at the southern tip of Los Angeles to Terminal Island in the harbour.

Scott, who was born in North Shields, in Northumberland, was the younger brother of Ridley Scott, the director of Blade Runner and Alien.

Top Gun, released in 1986, made a star of Tom Cruise, and Tony Scott later directed Cruise and Nicole Kidman in the car racing film Days of Thunder.

His other films included True Romance and Enemy of the State. He directed Denzel Washington in several films including Unstoppable in 2010.

The Scott brothers had recently finished making a television medical thriller called Coma. The two brothers ran Scott Free Productions and were working jointly on a film called Killing Lincoln.

Tony Scott lived in Beverly Hills. A spokesman for his family said: "I can confirm that Mr Scott has indeed passed away. The family asks that their privacy be respected at this time."

Tributes were expected to pour in as news of his death emerged. Director Ron Howard said: "No more Tony Scott movies. Tragic day."

Director Tony Scott Was 'Rock'n'Roll' To Ridley's 'Classical'

0

tony scott

On Sunday lunchtime, Tony Scott drove his car to the Vincent Thomas bridge in the port district of Los Angeles, parked it in the eastbound lane and then leapt to his death in the water below. "He jumped without hesitation," official sources told the press – and that sounds about right. We shall probably never know what prompted the 68-year-old film-maker – a Hollywood titan, rich as Croesus and respected by his peers – to take his own life. But having made the decision, Scott was not the sort to equivocate. In films and in life, the man went at things headlong. He left the doubt and the navel-gazing to the arthouse crowd. He jumped without hesitation.

"I'm more classical and he's rock'n'roll," Ridley Scott once remarked of his younger brother, who followed him into the business after training in fine art. "Come work with me and within a year you'll have a Ferrari," Ridley told him, knowing Tony's abiding weakness for sleek, streamlined, full-throttle hardware. Scott Jr went on to direct hundreds of TV commercials, helping to bankroll Senior's budding career as a feature film-maker while honing his own style below the radar. He made his feature debut on the lustrous The Hunger (a rare Tony Scott flop that went on to become a cult favourite) and then hit the jackpot with 1986's Top Gun, that boisterous salute to the American military and Tom Cruise's dentistry. Top Gun spun its $15m investment into a $350m return. The US Navy set up recruitment booths in the cinemas. Following Top Gun, Scott (born into a working-class North Shields family) could have bought a whole fleet of Ferraris along with his own racetrack to drive them round.

His film-making style was a very '80s breed of rock'n'roll: supple, glossy and smart, a reaction to the self-conscious noodling of '70s prog-rock. "I have a very short attention span," he once admitted, proudly claiming that he worked hard to make sure that all of his pictures came in under two hours. By the end of the 20th century, he was arguably the poster boy for populist Hollywood film-making, the master craftsman of the studio system, flogging high-concept thrills with a dizzying panache. He cranked up the volume for Days of Thunder, brought down the stadium in The Last Boy Scout and rode the audience towards armageddon on Crimson Tide.

What films should we remember him for? In terms of global impact, it's hard to see beyond Top Gun – surely the emblematic picture of the Reagan era; a film that showcased and celebrated a resurgent super-power, back from the mess of Vietnam and comfortable on its throne again. In terms of artistry, though, one is more likely to opt for the dashing Crimson Tide, the electrifying Enemy of the State, or (especially) the superb True Romance – a flushed, playful and intoxicating road movie, whisked with devilish aplomb out of an early script by Quentin Tarantino. But today, more than any other, I find myself drawn back to his lovely screen debut on his brother's 1962 short Boy and Bicycle. There he is, an everyday teen, grinning at the sky and chewing on his gum as he rattles around the grubby streets of northern England. His incredible, freewheeling adventure is about to begin.

Read The Letter From Donald Sutherland That Transformed The 'Hunger Games' Movie

donald sutherland the hunger games

The much-anticipated "Hunger Games" DVD was released this past weekend, and though void of deleted scenes, extra features on the two-discs included a few gems.

Among an eight-part making-of-the-film documentary, promotional materials for the movie, and interviews with the crew, is a lengthy letter sent from Donald Sutherland to director Gary Ross under vague title "Letters from the Rose Garden."

Sutherland plays main antagonist Coriolanus Snow, the callous president of the Capitol in the movies based off Suzanne Collins best-selling novels.

After reading the series trilogy, Sutherland sent a three-page email to director Ross on power, Ted Bundy, and the elements of Snow he saw as most vital to the film.

With the novel written from Katniss' first-person view, there's no chance to see anything from the perspective of the Capitol or Snow. Sutherland pointed out the film offered such an opportunity, and Ross agreed.

His response to the letter inspired three scenes of Snow in his rose gardens during the games.

"That's the relationship you want from an actor and director, where it's a give and take," said Ross. "It's collaborative, it's one person offering something to the other who then takes it, extrapolates it, runs with it, give it back to the actor who gives the scene back to me … that's the way film making works best."

Ross will not be working on the sequel "Catching Fire" after saying he didn't have the time necessary to pen and prep the film due to a tight production schedule. Instead,  "Water for Elephants" director Francis Lawrence will be leading the show behind the camera lens in "Catching Fire."

Read Sutherland's letter to Ross below:

Dear Gary Ross:

Power. That's what this is about? Yes? Power and the forces that are manipulated by the powerful men and bureaucracies trying to maintain control and possession of that power?

Power perpetrates war and oppression to maintain itself until it finally topples over with the bureaucratic weight of itself and sinks into the pages of history (except in Texas), leaving lessons that need to be learned unlearned.

Power corrupts, and, in many cases, absolute power makes you really horny. Clinton, Chirac, Mao, Mitterrand.

Not so, I think, with Coriolanus Snow. His obsession, his passion, is his rose garden. There's a rose named Sterling Silver that's lilac in colour with the most extraordinarily powerful fragrance – incredibly beautiful – I loved it in the seventies when it first appeared. They've made a lot of off shoots of it since then.

I didn't want to write to you until I'd read the trilogy and now I have so: roses are of great importance. And Coriolanus's [sic] eyes. And his smile. Those three elements are vibrant and vital in Snow. Everything else is, by and large, perfectly still and ruthlessly contained. What delight she [Katniss] gives him. He knows her so perfectly. Nothing, absolutely nothing, surprises him. He sees and understands everything. he was, quite probably, a brilliant man who's succumbed to the siren song of power.

How will you dramatize the interior narrative running in Katniss's head that describes and consistently updates her relationship with the President who is ubiquitous in her mind? With omniscient calm he knows her perfectly. She knows he does and she knows that he will go to any necessary end to maintain his power because she knows that he believes that she's a real threat to his fragile hold on his control of that power. She's more dangerous than Joan of Arc.

Her interior dialogue/monologue defines Snow. It's that old theatrical turnip: you can't 'play' a king, you need everybody else on stage saying to each other, and therefore to the audience, stuff like "There goes the King, isn't he a piece of work, how evil, how lovely, how benevolent, how cruel, how brilliant he is!" The idea of him, the definition of him, the audience's perception of him, is primarily instilled by the observations of others and once that idea is set, the audience's view of the character is pretty much unyielding. And in Snow's case, that definition, of course, comes from Katniss.

Evil looks like our understanding of the history of the men we're looking at. It's not what we see: it's what we've been led to believe. Simple as that. Look at the face of Ted Bundy before you knew what he did and after you knew.

Snow doesn't look evil to the people in Panem's Capitol. Bundy didn't look evil to those girls. My wife and I were driving through Colorado when he escaped from jail there. The car radio's warning was constant. 'Don't pick up any young men. The escapee looks like the nicest young man imaginable'. Snow's evil shows up in the form of the complacently confident threat that's ever present in his eyes. His resolute stillness. Have you seen a film I did years ago? 'The Eye of the Needle'. That fellow had some of what I'm looking for.

The woman who lived up the street from us in Brentwood came over to ask my wife a question when my wife was dropping the kids off at school. This woman and her husband had seen that movie the night before and what she wanted to know was how my wife could live with anyone who could play such an evil man. It made for an amusing dinner or two but part of my wife's still wondering.

I'd love to speak with you whenever you have a chance so I can be on the same page with you.

They all end up the same way. Welcome to Florida, have a nice day!

'The Expendables' Blasts Away The Competition–Here's Your Box-Office Roundup

0
0

the expendables chuck norris

With four new films out this weekend, there was only one clear winner at theaters.

"The Expendables 2" faced little competition from two new kid's films and a singing film featuring Jordin Sparks and the late Whitney Houston. Though the men took the box office this weekend, in the end, the film didn't outperform its predecessor.

Outside of the top ten, Robert Pattinson's "Cosmopolis," which opened in a limited-three theater release over the weekend, earned a huge $72,300.

Out of the top ten this week includes "Ice Age: Continental Drift," "Step Up Revolution," and "Ted" in its eighth week at theaters.

Here are this week's winners and losers at the box office:

10. The "Total Recall" remake dropped five spots this week earning $3.5 million. In three weeks the remake starring Colin Farrell is faring better overseas with $58.2 million foreign for a worldwide total of $109.9 million. More than a 1,000 theaters were shaved off the film's weekend schedule.

9. Kid flick "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days" dropped three spots with $3.8 million. The film has now earned $44.7 million worldwide in three weeks. In comparison, its predecessor, "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules" earned slightly more with $4.7 million in week three.

8. Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones' "Hope Springs" remains vibrant with $9.1 at theaters. The film dropped 37.9 percent from last week's earnings.

7. "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" grossed $10.9 million in its first week. The Disney film sees Jennifer Garner's return to film as the mother of a child who comes grown from the garden in her backyard. The actress' last big films were "Arthur" and "Valentine's Day" with opening weekends of $12.2 and $56.2 million respectively.

6. "The Dark Knight Rises" continues its run at theaters with another $11.1 million. Over the weekend the film passed "The Hunger Games" domestic gross of $407.6 million to become the second highest-grossing film of 2012 behind "The Avengers."

5. Whitney Houston's final film "Sparkle" debuted to an opening of $12 million. That's two million under the film's estimated budget of $14 million. The film received an A CinemaScore, good news for the future of the film in theaters.

4. "The Campaign" dropped nearly 50 percent in week two earning $13.3 million. The Will Ferrell comedy has now earned $53.8 million in two weeks.

3. "ParaNorman" proves the niche stop-motion animation audience. The kids' film grossed $14 million in week one. Compare this to similar films "Coraline" and "The Pirates! Band of Misfits" which earned $16.8 million and $11.1 million respectively.

2. "The Bourne Legacy" is down 55 percent in week two earning $17 million in week two. In comparison, previous film "Ultimatum" earned $32.8 million in its second week.

1. Though "The Expendables 2" takes the top spot this week with $28.7 million, it didn't beat out the first film which took in $34.8 million opening weekend.

Kim Kardashian

Casting director Sarah Monson has watched thousands of people try out for reality TV shows.

Monson, author of the new book "Me On TV: The First Ever Kick-Ass Guide To Get You On Any Reality Show," has some tips on how you can have a successful audition.

You can start by picking a stereotype and sticking to it, she told us in an interview. Once you're there, make sure you have planned out what you'll say to impress the directors.

She also gives tons of tips on making sure you stand out for the masses. Hint: leave your hot best friend at home.

You'll be the next Kardashian or Real Housewife in no time.

Stand between two really lame people at the open casting call.

"Seriously, if you position yourself in between Mr. Meek and Sally Soft-Spoken, then you will only stand out more," says Monson. She also advises against bringing your beautiful and charismatic best friend with you.

Wear something memorable but not crazy.

"Don’t wear a costume just to be silly," explains Monson. "And don’t dress like a stockbroker if you work at K-Mart. You will just be uncomfortable and it will show."

Wear something that flatters your figure and flaunts your personality.

"If you have big boobs, don’t wear a hoodie – show them off," says Monson. "Same goes for that six pack, guys."

'The Mentalist' Actress Sues Warner Bros For Sexual Harassment

Emmanuelle-Chriqui, Simon-Baker, The-Mentalist

A background actress on CBS show "The Mentalist" is suing production company Warner Bros. Television and GEP Cencast, its casting agency, claiming her position was eliminated after she complained about being sexually harassed by a coworker, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The complaint, filed Friday by Shanelle Howard, alleges "causes of action for sex discrimination, sexual harassment, failure to take remedial action and retaliation," according to THR.

The actress claims fellow employee Lonnie Moore, "subjected her to 'a daily barrage of sexually based comments and unsuitable conduct' while working on the show, including statements such as 'I'm married but that doesn't mean we can't have some fun,' 'Are you wearing thongs today or nothing at all?' and 'It's just sex; stop being so uptight and give me some.'"

Howard also claims she was physically harassed, as Moore would catch her off guard and "cop a feel."

She says began getting shunned by fellow employees and "was subjected to retaliatory and confrontational conduct."

Howard, a GEP employee since 2001, says that she was working five days a week on the Simon Baker drama, but after reporting her treatment to supervisors, that dropped to two days, and eventually zero.

Warner Bros. TV declined to comment on the suit.

WATCH: Obama Dishes About His 'Good Friend' George Clooney

Barack-Obama, Michelle-Obama

President Barack Obama took some time on the campaign trail to discuss the world's highest-profile bromance.

We knew they were friends, but after a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, it appears that Obama and his wife Michelle are downright smitten with actor George Clooney.

The couple gushed over the Oscar-winning actor and the POTUS insisted the only reason they don't keep in touch more is because Clooney is "low maintenance guy," and understands how it would look if they were seen together too often.

"He's very protective about not bothering me," said the president. "I think he's also sensitive to the fact that, you know, that if he's around a lot, then somehow it'll be tagged as 'Obama hanging out with Hollywood stars,' and that's not who he is. But he's a good person."

For her part, the First Lady admitted he's cute on multiple occasions. "It's a fact," she insisted.

The budding friendship began before Obama began his presidential campaign and the two got to know each other while advocating for the people of Darfur while Obama was still a Senator.

Clooney recently helped raise $15 million for Obama's reelection campaign.

Reboots We Hope Never Make It To The Big Screen [Infographic]

With 2012 having remakes of "Spider-Man" and "Total Recall," along with next year's "Superman," reboots are among the biggest money makers right now in Hollywood.

However, not all of them should be made, and not all of them do well in theaters. Ahem, "The Three Stooges."

The guys over at Jest get that, and put together a "scientific chart" called "The Reboot Grid" which tells us the likelihood of whether or not a future reboot may rock.

"Citizen Kane" with Peter Dinklage? No thanks. "Death Wish" "with Jason Statham or something"? Now we're talking.

Jay-Z's Beef With The 40/40 Club Chef Is Over Chicken Wings

Jay-Z

Yesterday, we told you Jay-Z was suing the former chef of his 40/40 club for $1.5 million, but the exact reason was unknown.

Well, now the New York Post is reporting that the reason was .. chicken wings.

When chef Mike Shand left the club, he reportedly took with him the recipes to several menu items, including the chicken wings, leading to the lawsuit.

The Post says Shand "happily handed over all his recipes" except his spice mix for the wings.

“The spice-mix recipe that Mike developed is his own recipe," Shand's lawyer Vik Pawar told the Post. "40/40 terminated him, then had the audacity to sue him for his recipes. He gave them all apart from this spice mix because it is his own. Mike had a wonderful relationship with Jay-Z and Beyonce for many years.”

We need to try these $1.5 million wings!

tony danzaAlec Baldwin may not be the only actor with political aspirations.

Tony Danza made it seem like he may consider throwing his shoe in the race for mayor of New York City outside the premiere of new film, "Premium Rush," starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

“I’m of a certain age, and you see things, and you think maybe you could help,” said Danza. “You say: ‘Let me fix the city. Let me run for Mayor.’”

While sharing his views on local transportation, the "Who's the Boss?" star doesn't even know what party he'd run for, but thinks he could take on Baldwin.

Back in July, the "30 Rock" the actor suggested a run at mayor of NYC on Twitter when he teased his followers with the question: "Who should be the next mayor of the City of New York?"

Soon after, his brother Billy Baldwin told Pier's Morgan his brother may seriously consider such a run.

“I think on one level it’s very real," said Billy Baldwin. "I think he’s very committed and extremely bright and knowledgeable and I think he could do it and he could run,".

As for Danza, at the end of the day, he's not sure he's the man for the position.

"Could I stand the scrutiny? I’m not sure." said Danza. "It’s a tough job. And it’s not like anybody’s asking me.”

Publication Of Naked Harry Pictures Was 'Demonstrably In Public Interest'

0
0

Prince Harry

The publication of photographs of Prince Harry naked in a Las Vegas hotel room was demonstrably in the public interest, a Conservative member of the Commons culture committee has said.

But the former deputy prime minister Lord Prescott has attacked the Sun for publishing the pictures, saying it proved that self-regulation of the press is dead.

The Sun published the pictures after Prince Charles's aides threatened legal action against newspapers if they published the images, even though they had already been circulated online. One of the two pictures of Harry was splashed across the paper's front page on Friday with the headline: "Heir it is!" In an editorial, the newspaper claimed there was a "clear public interest" in publishing the photographs "in order for the debate around them to be fully informed".

Speaking on Radio 4's Today programme, Louise Mensch, who recently announced her resignation as an MP, said the publication of the photos was demonstrably in the public interest.

"There is an active reason to publish them [the photos] … There is a clear, demonstrable public interest: the royal family receives money from the civil list; Prince Harry in inviting people to his room [had] the expectation of privacy so there's questions of judgment and questions of security."

She added that Harry could have been subject to a "honey trap", making the issue one of public interest. She also argued that the Leveson media enquiry was cowing the press. "We cannot have a situation where our press as a bloc is so scared of the Leveson enquiry that they refuse to print things in the public interest."

Mensch also said that she was "chilled" after learning that the newspaper industry watchdog body, the Press Complaints Commission, petitioned papers not to publish the pictures. "[The PCC] tried to tread on this story, they should not have done it."

But Prescott told the Guardian: "The Sun's actions proves that as of this morning, self-regulation is now dead. This [story] is not in the public interest, it is in the self-interest of Murdoch to earn money by breaching the privacy of anyone he wants, to sell his newspapers.

"The argument that just because it is all over the internet is spurious at least. There are lots of offensive images and extreme material on the web which international papers don't print."

Prescott added that he had drafted a report on what a "new media regulatory framework" (pdf), which could replace the PCC, could look like, which he hoped Lord Leveson would "seriously consider".

The editor of the Independent, Chris Blackhurst, also speaking on Radio 4's Today programme, said he had taken the view that they were "private photos taken in a private space", that he had not been influenced by Leveson and didn't "need lessons on press freedom and morality from the Sun". He said the argument that publication was in the public interest was "spurious".

"As for the idea that it's all out there on the internet and therefore we've got to publish, well I say to that there's a hell of a lot of material out there on the internet freely available to anyone and the press doesn't publish that.

However, he added that he was concerned that following the Leveson inquiry, the Sunday tabloid press was " not the beast it once was".

Jennifer Lopez's former Miami Beach home, which she sold in 2005, is back on the market.

The seven-bedroom home has been relisted for $40 million—a 28 percent increase over its previous asking price of $29 million when the current owners first listed it in 2010, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The owners, healthcare entrepreneur Mark Gainor and his wife, purchased the home from J-Lo for $13.9 million, and then put $11 million worth of work into the house.

The home spans 12,152 square feet, has eight full bathrooms, and three half baths.

The house was built in 1929.

The mansion sits on about an acre and a half of land.

Taxes are $191,367 a year. But for some people, a closet like this is worth that price.

Katie HolmesKatie Holmes better bank on a big Hollywood comeback.

The actress will be receiving $400,000 in annual child support from Tom Cruise, according to TMZ.

Break that down and it's $33,333 per month.

We knew Holmes wouldn't receive a large payout considering the prenup she signed when marrying the "Mission Impossible" star, who is reportedly worth $250 million

In addition to Cruise paying the sum of $400,000 until Suri turns 18 he will also pay the majority of his daughter's expenses including medical and dental insurance, extra-curricular activities and education.

This comes after the couple's divorce case concluded Monday.

Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise in June, blindsiding the actor, citing irreconcilable differences as reason.

Since splitting from Cruise, Holmes has set her eyes on returning to Broadway in a new play, "Dead Accounts," a few new film projects including "Molly," a film Holmes co-wrote, and "Responsible Adults." Holmes has also been working on a fashion line for New York Fashion Week
