Here's how 'The Simpsons' still stays timely after 26 years

Simpsons season 27

"The Simpsons" is about to return for its 27th season, a feat that's very rare in the TV industry, even for an animated series.

On its way to 625 episodes — more than "Family Guy" and "South Park" combined — "Simpsons" executive producer Al Jean told Variety that she thinks the show stays fresh by keeping up with current events, letting the real world serve up the story ideas.

We just had this thing a year ago where we did a World Cup parody. We were reading about the corruption in Greece. We had a FIFA executive get arrested, and now this week it’s gone online and gotten half a million views. There are things that happen in the world. We can’t do daily humor like “The Daily Show,” but there’s always insane stuff going in the world that you can’t imagine. I still think back, the Vice President shot a guy in the face — and the guy apologized. That happened! If we put it in a show people would go, “That’s ridiculous!”

home simpson election simpsons foxSpeaking of current events, Jean is thrilled that family patriarch Homer Simpson has another crack at voting in a presidential election.

"We’re definitely going to have Homer vote in 2016," Jean told Variety. "One aspect of the pickup that made me happy is that Homer can vote again. He voted for Romney in 2012 because he invented Obamacare. He tried to vote for Obama in 2008 but all his votes went to McCain."

He added, "We’re not sure who the candidates are yet, but whatever he wants it’s not going to happen."

"The Simpsons" airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on Fox.

Facebook's virtual reality company just shocked everyone by announcing a partnership with Xbox

Oculus Rift Xbox One

Microsoft's video game console Xbox One is getting virtual reality support from Facebook's virtual reality company, Oculus VR. The Oculus Rift headset will run Xbox One games through the Windows 10 operating system – the next version of Microsoft's famous Windows software, which launches for free in July.

Oculus VR CEO Brendan Iribe announced the news alongside Microsoft's Xbox leader Phil Spencer at a press event Thursday in San Francisco. Iribe said that the upcoming Oculus Rift VR headset – which is expected to become available to the general public in the first quarter of 2016 – will come boxed with a wireless Xbox One gamepad.

The hardware partnership is representative of a bigger initiative between the two companies. Microsoft's game console runs games that are streamed via WiFi to a computer running Windows 10, which are then able to be played using the Oculus Rift headset.

That means famous franchises like "Halo," "Forza Motorsport" and more will be playable in virtual reality when the Oculus Rift headset launches early in 2016.

These new ‘Ant-Man’ posters are brilliant

Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man won't be in "Ant-Man," but that doesn't mean Marvel can't have a little fun with the characters marketing its next big film.

Marvel just released three new promo posters for its next superhero movie, "Ant-Man," heavily featuring iconic symbols of Earth's mightiest heroes, and they're pretty brilliant.

Take a look at them below.

ant man captain america posterant man thor posterant man iron man poster

How do you market a movie for a character who plays a big role with the Avengers in the comics, but who hasn't been in an Avengers film?

Use recognizable images and characters from previous successes to draw in fans.

A quick glance at the posters, and you're not even focusing on the miniscule Ant-Man. You're looking at Steve Rogers' shield, Thor's Hammer, and Iron Man's suit.

It's even more brilliant because the posters instantly make you conjure images of Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, and Robert Downey Jr., the actors who play Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man, respectively, without having them in the ads.

The posters continue the film's clever marketing approach which has played off of the character's ability to shrink into an ant-sized human with incredible strength.

In January, Marvel Studios released an “ant-size” teaser trailer before previewing a full-size one.

In April, Redditors found miniature billboards popping up in Australia among other locations promoting the film.

Facebook's putting your hands into virtual reality with a crazy controller called 'Oculus Touch'

0
0

The first thing you want to do in virtual reality is reach out and touch the world around you. It doesn't exist, of course. There's no way to manipulate what feels like reality, even though it's just virtual reality fooling your brain with a very high-resolution image.

Palmer Luckey Oculus Rift

That isn't stopping Facebook's virtual reality company, Oculus VR, from trying to make that dream a reality. Oculus founder Palmer Luckey announced a motion-control device named "Oculus Touch" on Thursday at an Oculus VR press event in San Francisco.

The device is actually two devices – one for each hand – and they'll act as a stand-in for your actual hands when inside of the Oculus Rift headset.

This is what Oculus Touch looks like:

Oculus Rift Oculus Touch

The device features a variety of buttons and analog thumbsticks, the type found on traditional video game controllers. It also has a variety of sensors outside and in that Luckey said will enable, "communicative gestures," such as pointing, waving, or giving a thumbs up. The controller features a form of feedback known as "haptics," which act as a means of receiving physical feedback.

For example, if you touch something in VR that's electrified, the controller may vibrate wildly (for instance). That is "haptic" feedback. It convinces your hand that it's interacting with something that isn't there, essentially – a crucial component for tricking your brain into thinking it's actually touching what you're seeing in virtual reality.

The device shown on stage was a prototype known as "Half Moon" (presumably because of its shape). The company is showing more of the controller next week at the game industry's annual trade show, E3, in Los Angeles.

Facebook and Microsoft just announced a monumental deal in virtual reality (FB, MSFT)

0
0

oculus rift vr

Facebook-owned Oculus VR held its big "Step Into The Rift" event on Thursday, where it introduced a monumental new deal with Microsoft as it prepares to launch the first consumer version of the Oculus Rift, its virtual reality headset, early next year.

Not only will the first Oculus Rift come with an Xbox One controller and Xbox adapter so you can play your Xbox One games through your VR headset, Xbox chief Phil Spencer announced Oculus will support Windows 10 right out of the box.

This partnership is hugely important to both companies, as well as game players and consumers.

For Facebook, this partnership gives Oculus a major gaming platform to live on — the Xbox One. This will be a big reason for developers to build for Oculus, considering the mainstream gaming audience on Xbox.

But the partnership will actually help developers in another way: Since it will support Xbox One controllers out of the box, Oculus developers can target the Xbox controller, which has been an extremely popular layout for over a decade, to build their games on.

"Buttons and analog sticks are still around for a reason: They're a great way to interact with complex games, which is critical for lots of different types of genres," said Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey.

Oculus Rift Xbox OneThat said, this Oculus partnership is probably most important for Microsoft. Though the Xbox One is extremely popular on its own, working with Oculus will help the two-year-old living room console compete with Sony's Project Morpheus, a new virtual reality platform coming to the PlayStation 4 next year.

That means both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will support virtual reality in 2016.

But Windows 10 is the real winner here. Last month, Oculus announced the computer requirements for the first-generation Rift, which t0 tally excluded Apple users. The first Oculus Rift will require Windows 7 SP1 or higher, but since it will work natively with Windows 10, hardcore game fans and early adopters will be heavily persuaded to purchase a new Windows computer.

Microsoft knows Windows 10 is a rebranding effort above all; Windows 8 was met with a ton of criticism, and many expect Windows 10 to spark a great migration back to Microsoft's popular platform.

This will be just one more reason to invest in Microsoft's hardware, knowing how important it is to make the Oculus Rift work, both now and in the future. With the introduction of the first-generation Rift and the Oculus Touch hand controllers, which will allow for precise manipulation of virtual objects, the hype for virtual reality is at an all-time high.

Microsoft should be thrilled to be along for the ride.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? The original 1993 'Jurassic Park' cast today

I dove head first into Jay Z's music app 'Tidal' and the critics are completely wrong about it

0
0

I had to see what all the fuss was about.

Back in March, Jay Z's big streaming music service launched. He calls it "Tidal."

Jay Z spent $56 million to buy Aspiro, the Swedish company behind the WiMP and Tidal streaming sites. Since then, he and his team have made it their own.

But the PR battle for Tidal has been real, with haters coming out of the woodwork to bash the music service, including well known musicians like 50 Cent and Death Cab for Cutie, among others.

Enough. It was time for me to find out for myself. I downloaded the app, buried my Spotify icon deep within my iPhone, and got to work.

Here's the first thing you see when you open the app. This is honestly the most useless part for me. It mostly focuses on exclusive content and I've noticed an aim towards hip-hop (despite Jason Aldean being featured here). That goes against my personal tastes, but maybe it appeals to you.

While that's not super helpful, the rest of this app is fantastic. Here's the sidebar you see inside the app which is, in my opinion, much more useful than Spotify's sidebar. It's especially easier here to navigate to the songs you save offline and get to specific genres of music.

There is a lot of focus on curated playlists here which is a great feature for Tidal to have. As you can see they split playlists up into categories based on where you might be or what you might be doing. It's a clean, fun interface.

Sprite is decking its cans in lyrics from rappers this summer in the US.

Next time you pick up a can of the lemon and lime-flavored drink it might have the words "know yourself, know your worth" from Drake's "0 to 100," or Nas' "living longevity to the destiny," from "If I Ruled The World."

There will also be lyrics from Rakim and Notorious B.I.G.

Sprite says in a press release that the marketing push, which also includes outdoor and digital advertising, harks back to the early days of the brand. Back in 1986, Sprite says it was one of the first mainsteam brands to embrace hip-hop, creating a TV ad featuring rapper Kurtis Blow.

Over the years, Sprite campaigns have also featured other hip-hop artists such as Grandmaster Flash, A Tribe Called Quest, Missy Elliott, and Fat Joe.

The "Obey Your Verse" campaign, created by Wieden + Kennedy New York, features these lyrics:

The actors and actresses who helped bring the original classic to life have found success long after escaping the clutches of the Velociraptors.

Why the director of 'Jurassic World' wasn't initially sold on casting Chris Pratt as the lead

0
0

Screen Shot 2015 06 12 at 9.28.04 AM

When an up-and-coming star is being looked at for a big budget project, it’s usually because a filmmaker has been arguing for their case in front of the studio – but that wasn’t the situation behind the casting of Chris Pratt in "Jurassic World" (long before the release of "Guardians of the Galaxy").

Instead, it turns out that it was the Universal and Steven Spielberg who wanted the "Parks and Rec" star for the blockbuster, and director Colin Trevorrow who wasn’t initially sold on the choice. Why? Because he wasn’t sure that he would be casting Pratt for the right reasons.

I sat down for a one-on-one interview with Colin Trevorrow this past weekend at the "Jurassic World" press day in Los Angeles, and when the subject turned to actor Chris Pratt, I was surprised to learn that the filmmaker really wasn’t 100 percent sure about casting the actor when he was in pre-production on the project.

The problem was that Trevorrow saw Pratt as a certain kind of actor he likes to work with, and as such wasn’t sure if he was blinded to whether or not he was actually right for the part of Velociraptor trainer Owen Grady.

Explained the director,

"If any convincing had to happen, it was with me. The studio was down and Steven [Spielberg] was down, and I was down - but I was just worried that I was down for the wrong reasons. I really love improvisational comedic actors and you see them in my films again and again - Jake Johnson, Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass… and so I just wanted to make sure that I wasn’t bringing him in because that was comfort zone for me."

Safety Not GuaranteedOf course, Colin Trevorrow did eventually understand why Chris Pratt was a fit for the role, and told me that the two men proved to each other that it was the right direction to go in. This came out of really discovering who Owen Grady was as a character, and what Pratt could do with it.

Said Trevorrow,

"Ultimately we sort of proved to each other that it was the right choice, because we found something that certainly wasn’t really improvisational and it isn’t really that comedic. We found a real character."

Colin TrevorrowNot to sell Chris Pratt’s charm and inherent comedic sensibilities short, of course, Trevorrow added that Grady isn’t always the most serious character, and does still have a moments – along with many of his co-stars – to make the audience laugh.

"I feel like everybody gets their moment in this movie. There are laughs in this movie, but they are organic to the situation and everybody gets at least one."

Jurassic World VelociraptorKnowing this background, it’s interesting to think that Josh Brolin was at one point looked at to be "Jurassic World"’s leading man, and make us wonder how different the movie would have been without Chris Pratt as the star.

"Jurassic World" arrives in theaters this Friday.

game of thrones jon snow season 5

The highly anticipated "Game of Thrones" finale is quickly approaching Sunday, and it looks like a few big leaks from the episode have made it online.

Four images depicting Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) have made their way onto image sharing site Imgur.

We're not going to post the images below.

If you must see them, here's a link to the images on Imgur. Click at your own risk!

The photos started circulating in the ASOIAF subreddit

It's believed the images first surfaced on message-board site 4chan. Mostlinksto the message boards have since been deleted, resulting in 404 pages, except for one Snapchat image of Cersei's character.

This latest leak is one of a number of leaks that have plagued the fifth season of "Game of Thrones."

Originally, the first four episodes of the new season were leaked online ahead of the debut via press screeners.

A Middle Eastern network also featured an entire behind-the-scenes look at a future episode days before it aired.

Review copies stopped being sent out to press after the season's fourth episode. HBO since started distributing digital-streaming-only screeners for future series to prevent further leaks.

The "Game of Thrones" finale airs Sunday at 10 p.m. on HBO.

We have reached out to HBO and will update this post accordingly.

Jeremy Renner teases first image from set of the next 'Captain America' movie

"Captain America: Civil War," the third chapter in the "Captain America" series and the next big followup to "Avengers: Age of Ultron," started production back in May in Atlanta, Georgia.

As the cast begins filming, we're starting to get some very brief teases from the set.

The latest comes from Jeremy Renner, who plays Hawkeye in the "Avengers" films.

He'll be back in "Civil War," and he showed off a note presumably left for cast members wishing them a good time shooting the film.

Check out the image below:

Here's a larger version of the image:

jeremy renner captain america civil warThe image teases an impeding battle between Captain America and Iron Man which is at the center of the 2006-2007 "Civil War" comic storyline

Essentially, something huge is going to happen on screen, which will divide Tony and Steve, and every superhero will have to decide who they're going to stand by in the aftermath.

The above image from Renner is probably a big hint at what we can expect from the first marketing for the "Captain America" sequel.

Whose side are you on? — Steve Rogers/Captain America or Tony Stark/Iron Man.

Here's Marvel's synopsis for the film:

“Captain America: Civil War” picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

"Captain America: Civil War" will be in theaters May 6, 2016.

When it comes to building franchises, Hollywood tries desperately to stay consistent. If the first movie is a hit, studios will try their hardest to keep the same directors and actors on board as long as possible.

But there are instances in which change is necessary. Sometimes for the betterment of a movie, but sometimes they leave viewers scratching their heads.

From "Batman" to The National Lampoon "Vacation" franchise, check out the most notable recastings in movie history.

In 1980's "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" we see the Emperor for the first time as he speaks to Darth Vader via holograph. The Emperor was actually played by Elaine Baker, then wife of special makeup effects legend Rick Baker. The voice was done by New Zealand actor Clive Revill.

For the next film in the saga, "Return of the Jedi," George Lucas recast the role with Scottish actor Ian McDiarmid, who not only went on to play the Emperor in the prequels, but was placed into the "Empire" scene when Lucas updated the films in the early 2000s.

Though Anthony Hopkins won an Oscar for his performance as Hannibal Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs" (and would play the part two more times), he wasn't the first to star as the good doctor.
